The stability of open stopes in underground hard rock mines is influenced by several factors including the shape and size of the excavation, surrounding stresses as well as the degree of jointing. This paper presents a design methodology for stope analysis in jointed rock masses. The proposed approach relies on geological structural data to construct realistic three-dimensional joint network models. The stability of an open stope is determined based on a limit equilibrium analysis.

Selected drill core samples from a Ferrobamba-limestone-hosted, magnetite-haematite skarn deposit, located in the Apurimac department of the Andahuaylas-Yauri skarn/porphyry belt of south-eastern Peru, were mineralogically and texturally characterised to gain a preliminary indication of the deposit's potential as an iron ore resource. Optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy/electron probe microanalysis (SEM/EPMA) techniques were utilised to determine the characteristics of magnetite, haematite and/or goethite dominated ore types, including variations in the relative proportions and textural relationships of the ore and gangue minerals. The deportment of elements deleterious to processing performance (eg copper, sulfur and potassium) was determined and the beneficiation potential of the samples was briefly assessed. In drill core sections, the ores are grey to reddish in colour, massive and 'metallic' to dark brown and earthy in character, moderately hard and porous (macro and microporous), with variable gangue infill. Ores often appear weathered, typified by ochreous goethite staining and common minor goethite (except in dense core fragments), occasionally exhibiting a more friable texture with coarse magnetite/martite grains. Silicates and lesser carbonate gangue are visible as blue-green to beige to white scaly and/or shaly surface coatings, and finely particulate infill, often goethite stained. Sulfide-rich ore types also occur in part of the deposit, but are restricted to specific drill holes. Magnetite grain size is relatively coarse, compared with magnetite from typical banded iron formations, whereas discrete silicate gangue is mainly bladed/fibrous and/or layered and micaceous in form. XRD analysis indicates the presence of vermiculite, serpentine, stilpnomelane, chlorite, actinolite and clays. There is a spectrum of ore types representing the gradation from 'fresh' (magnetite-dominated) to oxidised and weathered (martite/goethite-dominated). Martite-dominated samples are generally higher in grade, due to leaching and removal of silicate gangue, resulting in higher macroporosity. Where gangue has been leached out, partial replacement by vitreous goethite and/or hydrohaematite is typical, often preserving the fibrous/layered characteristics of the original silicates.

Back Creek is a tributary of the Condamine River. It flows in a northerly direction across the existing Commodore coal reserves. The diversion of Back Creek was proposed to minimise sterilisation of the reserves. The approval process required a Waterworks Licence application, under the Water Resources Act 1989 (Qld), for the construction of a stream diversion channel and floodway. The diversion was designed using the æreference reachÆ approach, which mimicked existing properties of Back Creek. The following design standards were developed for the diversion: the diversion corridor width was 500 m; the diversion geometry was specified for both the low-flow channel, and the floodplain; material properties were specified for both the low-flow channel lining and the diversion bund; compaction standards for both the low-flow channel and floodplain were set; and the diversion rehabilitation included a riparian corridor and pasture land with clumps of native trees and shrubs. The following performance criteria were developed for the diversion: velocity regimes were replicated for the design events considered, in an attempt to avoid increasing the diversion flow velocities in comparison with the existing creek flow velocities; sediment transport calculations indicated that no significant change in sediment transport was expected within the diversion; overburden settlement estimates for the spoil placed in the corridor were summarised, and will be monitored throughout the construction process; geotechnical stability of the proposed Eastern Pit Buttress and the diversion bund configurations was confirmed; and groundwater impacts were assessed. Construction techniques, monitoring and further investigations are also discussed in this paper.

In June 2008, a joint airborne collection using hyperpspectral systems was tested on a single Twin Otter aircraft. This experiment was designed to incorporate two airborne hyperspectral sensors for geological and environmental projects. Mineral exploration and environmental impact statements are two areas where full spectrum hyperspectral data can document the mineralogy at the surface prior to mining operations. Many previous hyperspectral remote sensing collections were collected on a single aircraft with a single sensor. Mineral mapping using hyperspectral sensors that measure in complimentary regions of the electromagnetic spectrum is cost effective as it allows for the mapping of clays, sulfates, carbonates, feldspars, quartz, garnets and many other minerals. This report describes the experiment using the following two hyperspectral sensors: ProspecTIR, a visible near and shortwave infrared (VNIR-SWIR) sensor with 356 channels and spectral range of 0.4 to 2.5 ¦m, along with a spatially enhanced broadband array spectrograph system (SEBASS), a midwave and longwave infrared (MWIR-LWIR) sensor with 128 channels from 2.5 to 5.3 ¦m and 128 channels from 7.6 to 13.5 ¦m. SpecTIRÆs ProspecTIR system and The Aerospace CorporationÆs Spatially Enhanced Broadband Array Spectrograph System (SEBASS) are pushbroom sensors, have high signal to noise ratios, have similar swath widths and instantaneous fields of view. Examples of data collection experiment will be shown with a focus on mineral/lithologic identification and mapping along with environmental assessment in the western United States. Chromite ores have a long history of low pricing and for AustraliaÆs only chromite mine this has been a particularly tough challenge, especially as the mine is located nearly 400 km from the nearest port at Port Hedland. A stockpile of chromite fines (-16 mm) has been built up since 2003. The opportunity to develop a facility to treat this material to produce a chip (-16 + 1 mm) product and a sands (-1 mm + 45 micron) product was taken when the price increased to above US$140/t. A simple add-on plant containing a heavy media cyclone circuit for the chips and a spiral circuit for the sands was designed and developed. During construction of the fines plant the price of chromite reached a level where the payback for the entire project was less than eight weeks. Soon afterwards the price and the demand for chromite plummeted and the site was put on care and maintenance, except for the commissioning of the fines plant. This put considerable pressure on whether to continue to operate the plant or to place it in care and maintenance. Times of boom and bust provide management with almost totally opposite views. By not taking a conservative view on prices and costs, the effect of extremely low prices and minimal demand can be devastating to a good project. Designing and building plants with conservative costings in boom times gives a greater chance of keeping projects alive during the bust periods that tend to follow.

Planning for flooding and assessment of flood impacts are important requirements for mining projects, as they are also for other types of development. With more intense development and concern from the community, supported by government regulatory requirements, assessment of flood concerns and impacts has become of increasing importance. To ensure that flooding issues are fully understood and results presented in an appropriate format, advanced hydraulic analysis procedures have been developed and are beginning to be applied. These procedures must be rigorous in an engineering context but the results must also be readily understood by the community and government agencies. Advanced two-dimensional hydraulic modelling is becoming accepted as an important means of assessing flooding issues for mining projects. With presentation of results from hydraulic models with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), flood impacts can be analysed rigorously and presented clearly. This paper discusses the application of advanced hydraulic modelling in the planning and impact assessment of a major mining project located on a floodplain where there is extensive inundation. The analysis provides for both input to the planning of the project and for detailed assessment of potential impacts. This case study illustrates some important aspects of the application of hydraulic modelling using a two-dimensional modelling to a critical flood design.

The Readymix Group have a Quarry Improvement Program - 'Building in Quality (BIQ) which has many parallels to the ICI Explosives' total quality management - 'Quality Improvement Program' (QIP). Both companies have for some time recognised that the 'do it right first time' principle means less wasted effort and materials, that efficiency breeds profitability and so actively promote the quality culture. To install the principles and generate the culture requires considerable commitment and effort from the top down and invariably spreads to the suppliers and sub-contractors. Understanding the component processes involved with the quarry operation, analysis of those processes and gaining a breakdown of the cost of non conformance then allows the astute quarry operator to make the necessary changes to improve the process to realise profits. This paper outlines the steps in such a process and the profitable outcomes of the commitment to continuous improvement at the Nickol Bay Quarry.

Valuable data for geotechnical interpretation and integration into effective Australian underground mine planning may often be available, yet is not always fully appreciated or utilised, particularly in the early stages of mine planning or in due diligence studies. There may be considerable benefits associated with early prioritisation of geotechnical evaluation and impact on mine planning. Unidentified, misinterpreted, or ill-defined adverse geological and related geotechnical resource characteristics can pose significant business risk to underground coal projects and operations. Preliminary resource definition in the early conceptual mine planning stages attributes significant focus (entirely warranted) on resource quality and structural geology constraints. Yet detailed geotechnical data analysis and interpretation, which may have a substantial down stream impact and sensitivity with respect to future mine planning strategies, at times is given lower priority, or scoped and resourced in the later stages of a bankable feasibility study. Through extensive mine planning experience and observation of downstream process impacts, it has been found there is often data available for geotechnical analysis that does not readily stand out or is not adequately understood or utilised, available at the early (conceptual) stages of mine planning. Part of the issue may be that exploration geologists are not necessarily experienced geotechnical engineers and do not necessarily recognise or understand all important parameters. Subject to appropriate application of experienced professionals data can be manipulated to provide key geotechnical hazard assessment at minimal cost, and provide a framework for understanding and optimising the mine planning process. Although there is no single prescribed strategy for resource evaluation from a geotechnical perspective, potential business risks and mitigation approaches can and should be adopted at the conceptual mine planning stage. There has been a recent focus in the metals industry to provide a reporting framework for geotechnical classification of mining projects. This paper outlines the strategies and gives examples of key analyses adopted in mine planning and discusses the relative merits of adopting a reporting framework as a tool for geotechnical classification in mine planning.

The Mt Leyshon gold deposit produced in excess of three million ounces of gold and considerable silver over a period of approximately 130 years. Most of this production occurred between 1987 and 2001. Mining commenced in 1872, however it was highly likely that Chinese miners were not only removing alluvial gold from the area but were also mining very rich æreefÆ gold. Records for early alluvial and hard rock mining do not exist, however gold production was probably considerable. In the early 1980s Marathon Petroleum (Australia) Ltd (MPAL) joint ventured into the Mt Leyshon area which had been held as a mining lease by Noranda Australia Ltd since 1968. Noranda at that time was concentrating its exploration effort on the Balcooma base metal prospect areas to the north of Charters Towers. In early 1982 MPALs parent company was taken over by US Steel. This led to an opportunity for MPALs Australian management to purchase all tenements and licences (except for coal, oil and gas) which were duly purchased for $US 1 million. At this time MPAL had a remarkable array of gold tenements (many of which were subsequently mined by other companies) and Mt Leyshon was considered to be the highlight. Early æseedÆ capital ($A 3.1 million) was raised with backers being the Bank of America, the NSW Government Superannuation Scheme, Westpac, private individuals and a Queensland grocery chain by the name of æJack the SlasherÆ.

A colourimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determinations in a campaign at Kennecott Utah Copper Copperton Concentrator (Rio Tinto). Some observations are described, including: frother (MIBC) concentration evolution down a bank, frother distribution between pulp and froth phases, and loss of frother over time due to adsorption on certain minerals. A possible interference with a fuel oil addition was overcome. MIBC in recycle water was also measured. The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimisation of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimise the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.

Brown coal and its char were investigated as substitutes for petroleum coke in the manufacture of anodes for Hall-Heroult cells. The char, which had been densified by several techniques, was made into compacts with various binders and the anodic consumption determined during electrolysis. The results were an improvement on previous work, but the anodes still fell short of acceptability for use in aluminium smelters because of intractable microporosity. Some options for future development have been discounted.

Mining is a high risk, high capital and potentially high reward undertaking. A large proportion of the risk comes from a lack of definition of the orebody (which also provides some of the potential) and the unpredictable nature of the market. This makes the planning process difficult but encourages the development of a robust yet flexible mining system. The system should be capable of absorbing some deviation from the anticipated concept without a significant impact on profitability. The mine planning process tends to consist of a series of related but discrete stages. For instance, the pit shells are designed, a schedule for the pit shells is created, a plant fleet is chosen to achieve the schedule and a financial analysis is carried out on that scenario. It is likely a few iterations are carried out using various mill throughputs to produce a favoured financial result. The problem is that handing results from stage æBÆ for use in æCÆ doesnÆt encourage a flexible system. æCÆ is likely to be built for exactly æBÆ. Unfortunately, in mining, æAÆ (the orebody) has the highest potential for variability and impacts everything else downstream. æDÆ the market also has high potential for unplanned variability. These variations can spread and æreverberateÆ through the whole mine process. For example an unexpected increase in ore oversize impacts all downstream mine processes to the primary crusher which may in turn create problems back æupstreamÆ by restricting throughput rate. Also an unexpected drop in demand or price could require modifications to the planned production rates. This paper looks at how mining process simulation can be used to support the development of strategies to counteract unforseen circumstances or alter production to match fluctuations in demand and price.

The increasing need for alternative energy sources as well as the less clearly perceived but equally increasing demand for non-fuel minerals has resulted in extensive exploitation of near surface deposits. Many such deposits have depleted reserves and mining corporations are increasingly turning their attention to deposits, with thicker overburden, less competent materials, steeper dips and more complex structure. These deposits pose mine layout, geotechnical and equipment problems as well as the need for large outputs to achieve economies of scale. The paper describes the major problems and operational solutions for such deposits using continuous excavation and transport equipment.

The development of Mount Isa Mines Limited power supply is traced through the history of the mine operations. As would be expected, growth of the power supply system follows closely the increase in mine output, although it will be seen that total kWh. produced per ton milled shows a considerable reduction in later years when the mine output showed a more rapid rate of increase. That this reduction is not more marked is possibly due to the increased community and Shire Council power usage per head of population.INTRODUCTIONThe geographical position of Mount lsa, far from any large regional power supply Authority, dictated the policy that the Company be responsible for the production and suppiy of all power required for the plant operation. The Company also, in November 1937, accepted responsibility for the supply of a part of the power requirements of the township of Mount Isa. After the closure of mines they naturally start to fill up with water. As a result, hydraulic gradients develop between adjacent mines and different hydraulic water pressures are exerted onto peripheral areas or compartments within mines. This results in water flow between mines, or onto the surface. This flow is referred to as intermine flow. The geometry of the collieries in the central Witbank Coalfield make intermine flow possible in several areas. Since the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry declared intermine flow as one of its greatest concerns for granting closure to South African mines, much research into this phenomenon has been undertaken. The importance of the quantification lies in the DepartmentÆs goal of sustainable water management, and the possible long-term financial implications these flows could have for individual mines. The challenges of determining intermine flow are numerous, and attention is focused on the identification of areas where these flows can take place. Detailed mining plans on a regional scale are required, and detailed coal-seam floor data are combined to provide targets for possible interaction between these mines. The quantification of these flows is problematic due to the uncertainties regarding geometrical configurations and the variation in site-specific hydraulic characteristics of the coal and overlying lithilogical layers. To this end, use has been made of several analytic solutions and numerical flow modelling. Stage curves (volume versus elevation curves) for the opencast and underground workings have been calculated and first-order estimates for intermine flow or decant from these areas have been determined. The numerical modelling methodology entailed a down-scaling approach, starting with a broad regional model covering the entire area, followed by modelling the interactions between interconnected mines and finally looking in detail at the major areas of interaction. By considering different scenarios within the context of these flows, possible management options for intermine flow can be evaluated in terms of volumes and qualities that might emanate in the post-closure phases. Challenges for the future include obtaining site-specific information on the groundwater hydraulics and acceptable ranges for model parameters, and verifying model results over time.

A number of theoretical papers have been published outlining the use of electronic detonators to limit peak particle vibrations levels, but few empirical studies have been undertaken and even fewer examples have been published of the use of such technology in the aggregates industry. This paper gives a summary of the research work carried out at two limestone quarries in the North of England, where a series of blasts were used to compare and contrast the use of electronic and non-electric detonators. The majority of blasts were carried out using the same burden, spacing and decked charge weight loadings. A methodology was established that could be used to reduce the peak particle velocities (PPVs) at two or more specific locations by using single-hole blast vibration signatures in conjunction with specific electronic detonator timing intervals. The initial study concluded that this was only possible if single-hole signature blasts were periodically recorded to establish the shape of the correct vibration envelopes as properties were approached. These wave envelopes could then be used as the basis for choosing the specific electronic detonator timing intervals to give the lowest PPV for the properties or locations concerned. This methodology was then used in the second study to access a large volume of aggregates adjacent to a working railway tunnel. The financial benefit for the company was to convert these additional tonnages of rock from being a resource to an exploitable reserve. The project involved careful blast design and the instrumentation of a number of boreholes to enable the results of blast monitoring exercises to be compared with predicted PPV results. The iterative process involved the vibration results being uploaded into æBlast LogÆ (an expert blasting database system developed by the Blasting and Environmental Research Group at the University of Leeds) and analysed to produce predictions ready for the next blast.

Wire ropes are one of the most heavily used components in a dragline. They are subjected to harsh conditions during the regular usage of a dragline in a mining operation. Hoist ropes are subjected to fatigue due to the cyclic nature of load handling as well as due to rope bending over the sheaves and the drum under load. This leads to wire breaks due to fatigue. Accumulation of a number of wire breaks close to each other can have a detrimental effect on the rope. Furthermore, to allow for the increasing demand for higher load capacity coupled with the inconvenience of having very large ropes, the factor of safety is often compromised, which increases the wear rate. Drag ropes are also subjected to heavy loads. More importantly, they are allowed to drag along the rough mine surface subjecting them to external physical abrasion. This makes the life of drag ropes one of the lowest among those used in a dragline. Suspension and IBS ropes are relatively uniformly loaded during their regular usage although they need to withstand dynamic load cycles as well as bending. Hence they tend to last for a number of years on average. The paper analyses the wear types and their severity of each of these rope applications, and suggests methods to determine rope wear rates and the resulting rope life. The paper further gives suggestions for good operating and maintenance practice that can extend the rope life and help reduce the large expenditure associated with every major rope change in a dragline.

The manual gravimetric drying moisture determination methods currently employed by most mineral processing plants fail to provide timely and accurate information required for automatic control. The costs associated with transporting and handling concentrates represent a major portion of the overall treatment price. When considering the cash flow of a mining operation that is governed by both the smelter contract, with moisture penalties and the quantity and quality of the concentrates shipped, any tool that provides real-time feedback on the process is vital (Edwards, RP 1994). The introduction of an on-line moisture sensor would become a welcome addition to the process control field instrumentation package now applied. A novel on-line determination system for ore concentrate moisture content would replace the tedious manual procedure. Since the introduction of microelectronic-based control systems, operators have strived to reduce the treatment costs to the minimum. Therefore a representative and timely determination of on-line moisture content becomes vital for control set points and timely feedback. Reliable sensors have long been on the æwish listÆ of mineral processors since the problem has always been that you can only control what you can measure, (Konigsmann, 1990). Today, the task of moisture determination is still done by the classical technique of loss in weight utilising uncontrolled procedures. These same methods were introduced in the earliest base metal concentrators. Generally, it is acceptable to have ore concentrate moisture content vary within a range of seven to nine percent, but controlling the moisture content below eight percent is a difficult task with a manually controlled system. Many times, delays in manually achieving reliable feedback of the moisture content results in the moisture varying from five to twelve percent before corrective actions can be made. This paper first reviews the traditional and widely available methods for determining moisture content in granular materials by applying physical principals and properties to measure moisture content. All methods are in some form affected when employed on mineral ore concentrates. This paper introduces and describes a unique and promising novel on-line moisture sensor employed for mineral processing de-watering applications, which not only automates the tedious tasks but also results in reliable moisture feedback that can be used in the optimisation of the de-watering process equipment such as pressure or vacuum filters and fuel-fired driers. Finally, two measurement applications will be presented to indicate the usefulness and to summarise the measurement requirements for the proposed method of employing drag force and mechanical properties of the material itself to determine the moisture content. The commercial model of the equipment is described with the features and benefits to the users summarised.

The proximity of the Town of Kalgoorlie to the Mount Charlotte mine necessitates that charge weight per delay be limited in order to keep surface vibration levels within acceptable limits and to reduce damage to underground workings. The mining system requires that large mass blasts must be used to recover pillars and therefore a large number of separate delays are needed. Until recently all blasting has been done electrically, fired from mains, but with the introduction of large diameter blastholes (165mm diameter) this firing system was inadequate. Various firing systems were considered, but after extensive trials a non-electric sequential firing system was chosen. This system fulfilled all criteria of blast design, was relatively straight forward in charging technique and had a very simple primary initiation system. Although initially designed for large mass blasts, the non-electric firing system is now used for all large hole blasting and in a simpler form for small (57mn diameter) holes.
