The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources has, since 1974, administered the Derelict Mines Rehabilitation Program (DMRP) to reduce the environmental impacts of abandoned and orphan mine sites. The application of the DMRP is presented in case studies of sites from the South Maitland Coalfield featuring residual drainage of acidic and saline water in a semi urban and rural community setting. The acidity here is typically derived from iron oxidation in shallow underground coal mine workings and in surface emplacements of coal washery reject materials. This paper presents summary information on AMD investigation, monitoring and rehabilitation. The experiences of community expectation, stakeholder consultation and peer review are discussed.

Determining the controls of high-grade mineralisation at Vera Nancy requires careful data collection and assessment on a global and specific deposit basis. The techniques developed over 60 years ago to analyse structure, grade and width data are just as applicable today and can be enhanced using modern geological modelling software. High ore grades at Vera Nancy are controlled by both the primary geometry of the mineralised structure and the intersections of the main mineralised veins with subordinate splay veins. The main mineralised structure dilated as a consequence of extensional tectonics while the splays acted as conduits bringing oxidising surficial fluids into mixing zones precipitating high gold grades. Near-mine exploration is focussed on identifying zones of vein flexure and splay interaction to locate the relatively small high-grade shoots. Data modelling in a 3D environment is an essential process for understanding the geometry of the system being explored.

The stratigraphy of the Singleton Coal Measures is reviewed and a revised stratigrapixy which has been ratified by the N.S.W. Standing Committee for Coalfield geology is nominated and defined by a selected type section. Withir the type section the occurrence of repetitive phases are illustrated and described. Coal. Measure units within the Singleton Coal Mean sures, termed the Wollombi and Wittingham Coal Measures respectively, are correlated with the Newcastle and Tomago Coal Measures. In formal nomenclature the Singleton Coal Measures are designated the Singleton Super Group. The major depositional cycles within the Coal Mea- sures are outlined together with those lesser phases within the Coal bearing sequences that influence the mining conditions likely to be encountered. Both tectonic and sedimentary features of the Singleton Coal Measures are considered and the localized post depositional effects on the coal seams and roof strata in- duced by differential, compactions are emphar Sized.

Dissatisfied with conventional wet processing methods for alluvial deposits, Resource Trend Pty Ltd of Cairns set out to develop a better process. After comprehensive investigation of existing dry techniques the principals have now developed a rotary dry concentrator that can handle the fine-grained fraction of alluvial deposits as well as the coarse. Four of these units have been mounted on an integrated towable treatment plant which has been in successful commercial operation for four years in northern Queensland. A second plant is now under construction for use in the United States. Grades of less than 0.2 g/lcm have been profitably mined at throughputs of about 80 cubic metres per hour and 85 per cent availability. The operation runs round the clock with an establishment of four. Major benefits, apart from lower capital and operating costs, are environmental. Ore is picked up, treated, and replaced in its original mixed condition within 25 m of its initial location. Rehabilitation is completed almost immediately behind the plant as it advances, leaving no slimes dams, coarse stockpiles, or haul roads. In 1993 the company won a Premier's Award for Environmental Excellence in the Queensland Mining Industry. The principal disadvantage is moisture, and the company is now actively seeking deposits in the deserts of the world. In Queensland mining is normally possible only for six months of the year.

THE absence of any locality maps of the district of Morobe has been seriously felt by mining engineers engaged on the goldfields, and as it was evident at the beginning of operations that the administration would be unable to make good this deficiency, ascheme for making rapid traverses was worked out, and in all subsequent travelling the necessary records were kept for the construction of a reliable reconnaissance map of the Bulolo goldfield and its approaches (see Plate 1.). Since all the field work had tobe carried out without encroaching on primary duties, the compilation of sufficient data was a somewhat lengthy business. It was found that in this r;ough country a pedometer was useless, as it was impossible to calibrate it for the variation in length ofpace between climbing semi-precipices and walking over level country. Further, the native tracks "meander" so excessively that the only method of calculating air-line distance is by timing, and a knowledge of what the timing represents, and until a 10kg experience had been gained in the time taken to cover known distances in various types of-country, one could not feel competent to estimate sufficiently accurately. It was found that reliability could be attained only when walking at nearly top pace. Inregard to aeroplane traverses, results were reliable only when the air was fairly still.BEARINGSIn arriving at the bearing between main traverse points, the method used was to keep a "boy" about two chains- behind when marching and sight back on him, standing, at about two-chain intervals. The Porgera mineral deposit in Papua-New Guinea contains gold as finely divided, probably submicroscopic (1 um) particles dispersed in a pyrite sulphide matrix. Only 25-30% of the gold in pyrite can be extracted by direct cyanide leaching and fine grinding the pyrite does not increase gold extraction significantly. This work is concerned with the application of alkaline leaching at atmospheric pressure to oxidise the pyrite prior to gold recovery by cyanidation. The paper presents and discusses results of a comprehensive set of testwork using sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide alkaline media. Best results, at 60-70% gold extraction, were obtained with sodium hydroxide systems.

KCGMÆs Fimiston Open Pit, located in the centre of the historic Golden Mile, is situated above some 3000 kilometres of old underground workings. These workings, both level and vertical, present significant safety and operational problems in the pit. One of these challenges is in safely drilling void areas so that they can be charged and blasted effectively. Current drilling practices in these areas require machines that can only drill 115 mm holes on a smaller pattern than the standard blast pattern. This results in more time and cost to both drill and charge these areas. Any other method currently available to drill out these areas involves putting operators in a potentially hazardous situation by being too close to the void area being drilled. Not effectively drilling and blasting these areas leads to hazardous situations further in the mining cycle including oversize, large toe and uncollapsed voids. Ineffective blasting also causes reductions in mining productivity and mine to mill performance. In response to these issues, KCGM has commissioned the implementation of a fully remote controlled DM45 blast hole drill rig to drill out selected void areas. The remote system, installed in conjunction with Ausdrill Ltd and GM Mining Electrics, is designed to operate similarly to a tele-remote bogging system with the operator controlling the drill rig from a separate control cabin via radio signals and video feed. This allows KCGM to drill in areas of higher risk without exposing the operators to voids. The drill rig will also be able to drill standard patterns through some specially selected void areas, reducing costs and extra time associated with drilling and charging void affected areas. The remote rig is expected to provide a number of benefits, both in the drilling process and in further downstream operations. Costs of drilling in void areas are expected to decrease with standard patterns instead of smaller patterns being drilled. Safety and operator comfort are also expected to increase through removing the operator from the pit floor. Blasting is also expected to see significant improvements through increased ease of charging void areas (because of larger holes and standard patterns), more consistent patterns resulting in less secondary blasting and toe and an overall improvement in the speed and cost of charge-up practices. This more consistent blasting will also improve shovel productivity, crusher performance and overall mine-to-mill efficiency. This paper presents an overview of the development of the remote controlled system, including modifications that have occurred since commissioning. It explains some of the problems encountered and how these have been solved. Key issues for operational success will be identified and explained with a view to making future implementations easier. Factors used to assess the performance of the remote controlled rig will also be explained in further detail and used in a preliminary assessment of the rigÆs feasibility.

The Tolukuma Gold Deposit is hosted by metamorphic and volcanic rocks, and igneous intrusions. Dilatant structures for the main veining appear to be provided by post-metamorphic flexure/faulting; syn-mineralisation tectonics is recognised from the en-echelon patterns of much of the veining. A SSE trending structure containing high grade mineralisation has acted as a major dilational zone within or at the contacts of porphyry intrusions. An ESE trend has controlled numerous dilational structures splaying eastward from the SSE vein structure and containing medium grade mineralisation.Early hydrothermal activity (Stage I) is represented by unmineralised, pyrite-rich brecciation and fracturing. Associated chloritic veining is indicative of single phase neutral-chloride fluids upwelling in relatively low fracture controlled nenneahility

This paper summarises the findings of 27 model-scale bench blasts in magnetic mortar, which were conducted from 2011 to 2014 at the blasting site of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben.The aim of the study was the investigation of the influence of blasthole delay times in small-scale bench blasts on the face characteristics and cracking damage created in the surrounding rock, which affects the fragmentation in subsequent rows.The test specimens or blocks, which were produced out of magnetite concrete, were roughly 1:100 in scale to normal bench blasts. The confinement of the testing blocks at the sides and back ensured the similarity to normal bench blasts with regard to the wave transmission into the surrounding rock. The specimen contained three or four rows with five blastholes each and were shot row by row, with virgin (undamaged) material in row 1 and increasingly damaged or preconditioned material in the following rows.The tested delay times varied between 0, 28, 73 and 140 µs, which corresponds to 0, 0.4, 1.0 and 2.0 ms/m of burden.The evaluation of the material properties showed that the use of magnetite concrete eliminated the inhomogeneous behaviour of rock, but some unexpected differences of the individual production cycles were still detected.The characteristics of the bench after each blast was evaluated along three horizontal lines out of a 3D model of the bench face. The tested delay time sequences of the virgin (first row) and single preconditioned blasts (second row) produced more overbreak for longer delays, while the third-row shots resulted in a smoothened surface independent of the chosen delay.The introduced damage after every blast was evaluated by an observation of irregularities on the newly blasted bench face. The visible cracks at the top of the testing blocks were documented and divided into several crack families according to their angle, length and origin. The remaining block was broken out of the blasting site after blasting, cut into several horizontal and vertical slices and dye penetrant spray was used to visualise the cracks created. Some of the detected crack families showed an influence of the delay time. The calculated mean crack density and mean crack intersection density showed that longer delays resulted in a higher degree of damage.The fragmentation results were well reproduced by the basic three-parameter Swebrec function. The observed improvement of fragmentation in the second- and third-row blasts was linked to the preconditioning of the burden for the following row while blasting the actual row. With the exception of the simultaneously initiated blastholes, the blasts showed coarser fragmentation for the shortest delays, while the longest delays generated the finest fragmentation.CITATION:Schimek, P, Ouchterlony, F and Moser, P, 2015. Since the mid-1970s there has been increasing attention in the South Pacific area to the problems of disaster planning and management at various levels, mainly from regional through national to provincial levels. This concern has been expressed in a variety of ways. International aid donors have made their views known in commentaries or reports. Seminar discussions have been organised at the regional level (such as at Suva, 1976; Suva, 1979; Tonga, 1982 and Suva, 1983). In-country training workshops or meetings have been organised (such as the "Disaster Preparedness Workshops for Non-governmental Organisations" in Pacific countries, jointly run by the Australian Red Cross and the Australian Overseas Disaster Response Organisation and supported by AIDAB, in Vanuatu, 1985; Solomon Islands, 1985; Western Samoa, 1986; Fiji, 1987; Tonga, 1987; Lae and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 1988) or held outside the area (ACDC at Macedon, 1981). Training and/or research institutions have been established such as the East-West Center, Honolulu, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Bangkok (more Asia oriented). As part of the East-West Center Pacific Islands Development Program's Disaster Preparedness Project, a detailed manual of disaster preparedness and response procedures and guidelines has been published (Carter, 1984).Table 1 and figure 1 show that the area with which this discussion deals is a highly fragmented island region, comprising many small, some minute, nations, both in land area and population. The social structure is predominantly rural, with the capital city often making up a small part of the total population and, in absolute terms, little more than a small town. Outside the administrative and governmental activities concentrated in the capitals, in most cases the indigenous inhabitants depend on subsistence agriculture or on usually a monocultural concentration on a cash crop, most frequently coconuts.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Microcharacterisation, such as that described in this paper, provides understanding of a mineral system at multiple scales, and understanding microscale variations is the key to understanding the large-scale variations in a mineral system. More than 50 high-grade lode samples from across Plutonic Gold Mine (Plutonic), Marymia Inlier, Western Australia were analysed by a variety of techniques, including micro X-ray fluorescence (µXRF) mapping, micro X-ray computed tomography (µCT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission gun SEM, electron back-scatter detector (EBSD), proton-induced X-ray emission microprobe and synchrotron XRF mapping. These data demonstrate that competency contrasts are the key to governing the location of Au mineralisation at Plutonic. Micro CT imaging of high-grade samples shows the Au filling in voids and pore-space in the rock, after having travelled along more permeable layers and already existing or reaction-induced pores formed during hydrothermal circulation. Using 3D visualisation, the Au is seen to form a connected network that appears undisturbed at the scale of the samples, and a high-grade Au deposition event was one of the last events to affect the rock. This interpretation is supported by SEM analyses on high-grade samples that reveal calc-silicate (epidote-clinozoisite) alteration that is not present in lower Au grade samples, which are typically dominated by potassic alteration, and that sulfides are typically less abundant close to the Au. The replacement of biotite by chlorite is an alteration associated with the high-grade Au-mineralising fluid. Gold is coarsest where Au particles are located on the margins of minerals, typically sulfide and quartz grains, suggesting the importance of rheological contrast at the microscale. Furthermore, EBSD data reveals that Au is undeformed and overprints peak metamorphic and retrograde minerals. Recent trends in flotation technology are briefly reviewed. These show that considerable development has been made as the operators, suppliers and technologists have responded to the challenges of the industry. Most of these advances have been based on empirical and phenomenological methods. There is a considerable opportunity to make further advances through a more fundamental, scientific approach. Some of this work is discussed and, although progress is being made on this front, industrial uptake has been somewhat slow. A number of specific issues facing the industry are discussed.

The adsorption mechanisms of various thiol collectors can be subdivided into four classes: chemisorption, EC-mechanism, catalytic oxidation and metathetical substitution. The chemisorption mechanism occurs at potentials below the thermodynamic potentials for the metal-thiol compound formation and is reversible. The EC-mechanism occurs when the mineral is sufficiently oxidised to liberate metal ions to form metal-xanthates; therefore, it is observed with more easily oxidisable minerals and/or with collectors having large pK values. Thionocarbamates adsorb on sulphide minerals via the EC-mechanism due to their large pK values. Although the adsorption occurs at very low potentials as compared to xanthates, it is irreversible with large overpotentials. On the other hand, the adsorption of modified thiophosphates and thiophosphinates occurs near the thermodynamic potentials because of the low pK values. The metathetical substitution is believed to occur only when a mineral is highly oxidised. These classifications are useful for studying the effects of electrochemical potentials and the molecular structure on the collector adsorption Mechanisms.

The selective recovery of gold and silver from solutions containing other metals, such as copper, is possible using AuRIX«100 resin in conjunction with the Gekko Resin Column. Selectivity is driven by controlling the solution pH, which enables activities such as loading copper, gold and silver and then selectively stripping copper before gold and silver. Alternatively gold and silver can be loaded and the copper left in solution. The selective loading of gold while reducing the silver loading has also been demonstrated, opening the possibility of producing high grade gold dorT from high grade silver pregnant leach solutions. This paper reviews the AuRIX«100 resin and Gekko Resin Column Technologies, discusses the uses of AuRIX«100 in the recovery of gold and silver and the chemistry relating to several projects for which AuRIX«100 is being tested.

The basic separation phenomena taking place in film concentration processes are studied through a kinetic-probabilistic approach. This approach is based on the fact that the particle velocity in the film separation phenomena is a random variable and may be defined by frequency distributions and probability laws. The approach requires: 1. development of probabilistic models for describing the behaviour of particles having different specific gravity and size along selected trajectories in the separating devices; 2. setting up an experimental procedure for determining the relevant frequency distribution curves at the exit of the separators for the particles mentioned above; 3. estimation of model parameters and model validation. In the paper, the model equations are given for the mass distribution of particles on the surface of separators, the mass distribution at the exits of shaking tables and the residence time distribution in channel type devices. The relation between residence time distribution and particle velocity distribution is derived. The test procedure has been defined and results are reported for the exit or residence time distribution in channels. A comparison between experimental and calculated frequency distributions is reported.

The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

Contemporary mine wastewater flows are subject to stringent water quality standards before discharge to local waterways. Strict criteria are often applied as a result of fears of extensive acid mine drainage; a feature of the many abandoned mine adits around the Coromandel, Central Otago, and the West Coast. In most cases the USEPA water quality criteria have been used to set treated wastewater discharge water quality standards. In future it is possible that the recently published ANZECC water quality criteria guidelines will be used for this purpose. The ANZECC guidelines also provide for the establishment of discharge criteria at specific sites, rather than accept the trigger values. The use of site-specific criteria for treated wastewater mine discharges was pioneered at the Golden Cross gold mine, near Waihi, in the late 1980s. The procedure used to derive water quality criteria was based on USEPA guidelines. In developing the Golden Cross criteria, only species that occur, or are similar to those that occur in the Waitekauri River were used. The mine commenced discharge of treated wastewater in 1991, and macroinvertebrate communities in the vicinity of the discharge point have been regularly monitored twice a year for the past 12 years. Despite fluctuations in community composition and abundance over that period, no permanent significant changes in the macroinvertebrate communities occurred between sites above and below the treated wastewater discharge. The success of the site-specific criteria at Golden Cross has shown how the application of this methodology can result in the protection of aquatic life while allowing for the discharge of treated mine wastewater.

Chrysotile asbestos is a valuable resource. Used as a reinforcement in asbestos cement, products are obtained which are cheap, are not attacked by vermin, do not rot or support growth of fungi and are unaffected by water or humid conditions. Such products are of great value in the developing countries where inexpensive and durable building materials and pressure pipe are very important to development, housing and water supplies. Concern over the adverse effects of inhaling asbestos has led to the introduction of increasingly stringent controls world wide on the quantities of airborne asbestos per- missible in the occupational situation. Wet processing has the potential for virtually eliminating the environmental concerns with asbestos dust both in fibre production and in the materials handling section of the manufac- ture of asbestos cement products. In addition, high efficiencies associated with wet process- ing mean that better yields are obtained and that the tailings which are dumped have a lower residual asbestos content. Since early 1977, ICI Australia and Woodsreef Mines have been engaged in a programme of research to develop and evaluate a wet mill- ingprocess to produce, from ore and existing tailings, high grade fibre suitable for use in asbestos cement products. The process has been developed through microscopic studies, labora- tory bench scale experiments, work in a small scale semi-continuous plant and product evalua- tion on experimental size Hatschek asbestos cement machines. A prototype mill with a normal feed rate of 1z tonnes per hour and capable of producing pipe grade asbestos from Woodsreef ore has been constructed and was operational from January, 1982 to July, 1983. A range of asbestos cement products have been made successfully on full scale Hatschek machines using fibre from ore and tailings milled in the prototype mill. Economic evaluations indicate that a wet process mill would be cheaper to build, operate and maintain than an equivalent dry process plant. A commercial plant has been designed 1. I have chosen this topic for my address with the intention of preserving a rather extraordinary record of recurrent additions of capital in the financing of one of the world's important silver-lead-zinc mines. The recitation of the trials and tribulations which fore-shadowed the rise of Mount Isa Mines to a position of relative prominence in the realm of non-ferrous mineral production may, I hope, be of assistance to some of the younger members of the Institute who may be called upon during their careers to meet similardevelopmental and financial problems.Mount Isa Mines Limited was incorporated in New South Wales in 1924 with an Authorised Capital of 40,000 shares of £20 each.In November 1925 the Company acquired the leases and water rights of the Mount Isa Proprietary Silver-Lead Limited for 6,250 fully paid £20 shares. Shortly thereafter, but in the same year, the £20 shares were split up into £1 shares, thus bringing the Authorised Capital to £800,000.The leases purchased consolidated and brought under one management the principal ore bodies of the Mount Isa area.Transportation facilities were indispensable to the economic future of the field, so the construction of a railway extending the Government line from Duchess, 54 ,miles to Mo.unt Isa, was assured by the passage of a bill in October 1925 by the Queensland Parliament. Under the provisions of the so-called Mount Isa Railway Act the Company was required to idemnify the Government against national loss on this branch line for a period of 10 years.

The first step in the design of a process to treat a possible economic precious metal deposit should be an examination of the mineralogy of the ore. Using this and other initial tests, the extractive metallurgist can design a process to treat the ore. In the field of precious metal metallurgy, little emphasis is placed on the mineralogical information available to the metallurgist. The information is of far more use to the geologist and the mining engineer. Diagnostic leaching was designed to open up the field of mineralogical analysis to the metallurgist. When a mineralogist looks at the deportment of gold in an ore, he is usually looking for an element which is present in parts per million, so that errors in sampling are multiplied dramatically. Diagnostic leaching offers a cheap, simple, practical alternative. In order to determine with which minerals the desired precious metal is associated, a specific mineral is first eliminated using a selective oxidative leach, and cyanidation is used to extract the precious metal (in this case gold and silver) liberated by the destruction of this mineral. The precious metal extracted can be measured in solution to give a fairly accurate record of the amount of the precious metal associated with that mineral. Furthermore, the residue from this first stage can be subjected to another selective acid leach, and the process repeated. The procedure can be varied to suit the mineralogy of the matrix material. At the end of this diagnostic leach the metallurgist is left with a complete record of the deportment of the precious metal. He can now use this information to design a metallurgical flowsheet to treat the ore. Diagnostic leaching is thus an analytical tool which can be used by the metallurgist not only to examine new ores, but also to look at problems occurring at existing plants. The procedure is not only limited to ores and residues but in fact can deal with any type of intermediary product that occurs on a plant. The information gained from analysing an intermediary product can give a useful indication of how well a unit process is working, eg flotation, roasting, etc.
