The problem of manufacturing from sulphuric 'acid and Christmas Igland "A" phosphate, superphosphate of acceptable physical condition and agronomic phosphate availability, is directly related- to the crystallisation of a reac- tion product, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate. Two solutions to the problem, vacuum drying the superphosphate and calcination of the ore before reaction with acid, are discussed.

Titrimetric studies have been carried out on the activated carbons Kintal 1105, Norit 2520 and Kuraray 2GA. Titration curves of the carbons before and after acid and water washing and gold loading indicate that the acid-base properties of the carbons are affected by both the method of treatment and also by the loading of gold. It is considered that the pKa values of the functional groups on the carbon surface are in the regions of 11, 7 and 3 respectively.

Approval to operate Longwall No. 7 at Appin Colliery in 1979 was granted pursuant not only to the usual statutory provisions, but also that an adequate means of drainage of methane gas be incorporated. A methane drainage plant was subsequently designed and constructed some two km from the pit top at the site of the Colliery main upcast and down cast shafts. Modern plants of this nature are completely automated using programmable controllers and computers to provide control and management reporting functions. Complex mechanical systems are installed to extract the gas and in handling and storage processes. Gas utilisation plants exist which can generate power from methane. These plants are further enhanced by harnessing waste heat produced in the generation process. The installation, automation control and monitoring of these plants incorporates many facets of engineering from high voltage power supply and computer technology to complex gas handling procedures used in gas compression storage.and generation of electric power.

In the first five years of longwall mining at Pacific Colliery, special techniques of goaf sealing, gas drainage, goaf edge ventilation and goaf sampling were developed and used to o crcome the concurrent problems of spontaneous combustion and high methane emissions. The English-inspired back-return face ventilation system was modified to suit Australian mining methods and was first used as part of a 'Y' ventilation system and more recently was used with a 'U' system of ventilation. In conjunction with this ventilation system, the maintenance of a sealed goaf area was an essential element in the control of the spontaneous combustion in the goaf.

The underlying principles of dewatering theory have recently achieved considerable practical application in the washing and dewatering of alumina trihydrate in Bayer plants. In particular, the influence on residual cake moisture contents of trace amounts of surfactant added to the wash water reveals that significant energy savings can be achieved. The influence of organic compounds produced by the caustic extraction of bauxite in the Bayer process is shown to be significant. These humic species reduce the cake permeability and the effectiveness of certain surfactants in dewatering operations.

Examples from Peak Downs Mine are used as a guide to the range of methods available.A number of geological and geotechnical conditions adverse to successful in-pit bench stripping are described. In all cases bench, floor, and/or final lowwall instability can develop and compromise the economics of extraction.

A study was conducted to examine how pretreatment of carbon-bearing gold ores with chlorine enhances gold recovery by cyanidation. It is hypothesized that metal species (including iron and copper) dissolved during chlorination adsorb on the carbon surface hindering the adsorption of dissolved gold. To test the hypothesis, samples of several sulfide minerals were subjected to reaction with sparged chlorine gas to determine which, if any, dissolve faster than gold under these conditions. Then, a synthetic carbonaceous refractory gold ore containing pyrite, chalcocite, activated carbon, and gold was subjected to gas sparging. The results of these experiments showed that chalcocite and arsenopyrite dissolve so that metal (copper and iron) is put into solution slightly faster than gold under the same chlorination conditions. Also, it was observed from the experiments that gold adsorbs on activated carbon during chlorination, but is replaced by copper and iron as the chlorination process dissolves more of the chalcocite and pyrite. The study concluded by investigating ferric chloride addition prior to chlorination to hinder gold adsorption on activated carbon.

Column flotation is receiving increased interest from both an industrial and research perspective in Australia. The traditional overseas application as a molybdenum cleaning cell is being expanded and a number of new applications as cleaners, scavengers and roughers are emerging in Australia. The success of column flotation has hinged on the new understanding developing from the work of Finch- and coworkers at McGill University, Canada, particularly in relation to scale-up parameters and model development. The aspiring column flotation user in Australia now a has wealth of experience to draw on when deciding on the correct procedure to follow during the process evaluation and plant installation stages of development. However, some aspects relating to column design, such as aeration mechanisms, require careful evaluation.

The rate of precipitation of ferric iron as ammonium jarosite, NH4.Fe3(SO4)2(0H)6 from acidic solutions near 100¦C, was found to increase with weight of jarosite seed crystals, and with concentration of ammonium ion, but to decrease with increasing acidity. The particle size of the product crystals was larger at low sulphate concentrations and at high ammonium concentrations. Tailings disposal and water management are one of the most important environmental issues in mining projects. The nature and the method of disposal of the tailings will determine the long term environmental impacts and must be carefully considered at the planning stage so that final abandonment can be economically achieved. If not, long term and on-going treatment and amelioration may be required to achieve environmental standards. Final abandonment requires dam safety surveillance inspection to satisfy engineering stability and hazard requirements as well as environmental issues. Environmental issues include stability, as well as rehabilitation and long term contamination potential.

Previous methods for the assessment of the explosive potential of gas mixtures have required the plotting of apeexplosibility diagram. These became cumbersome if a large -number of assessments of various sampling locations over a period of time wererequired. This may make the approach of a dangerous situation more difficult to predict. With the aid of a programmable calculator, a new method for the rapid assessment of the explosibility of coal mine sample gases has been developed. This method does not require that an explosibility diagram be drawn to indicate the explosive status of a gas mixture. Simple Cartesian co-ordinates representing the explosive potential of,mixtures are obtained, which may readily be plotted to show changes with time.

Costain Resources Limited operates two open cut coal mines in the Hunter Valley coalfields of New South Wales, Ravensworth Mine and Warkworth Mine. The location of the Ravensworth operation is shown in Figure 1. In the case of the Ravensworth Mine, Costain Australia is essentially a contract miner and is contracted to supply coal to Pacific Power (previously The Electricity Commission of New South Wales), on contracts won through a tender system. Due to the existing infrastructure and the lease area that associated with the contract, the mining strips at Ravensworth South have a maximum strike length of 1500 metres. This paper deals with the methods of scheduling used to overcome the challenge of mining the short strike length, multi-seam deposit at Ravensworth South.

The InLine Pressure Jig represents a breakthrough in digging technology Its design incorporates a unique combination of features previously utilised in conventional jig design. In particular, a moveable screen and circular bed are used to excellent effect. However, a major design innovation is the encapsulation of the circular bed within a vessel - allowing the equipment to operate under pressure. This innovation eliminates free water surface, improves the dynamics within the separation layer (crossflow) and provides significant cost savings in the handling of slurries. However, where silica dust of less than 10 micron sizing is present, they Cannot be recommended. The Institute of Mineral Processing at Aachen University of Technology has been engaged in fine and ultrafine comminution for several years. Former investigations had been dealing with the mechanical activation with the aim of increasing the solubility of highly resistant oxides such as tantalite and niobite while research on the product of ultrafine powders is of major importance at the moment. Materials of that kind are of increasing interest in the production of extremely resistant ceramics, in the development of new raw materials, in powder metallurgy and in the production of fillers (extender pigments) and pigments. The creation of ultrafine powders is difficult and very expensive. They can be produced by means of condensation or dispersion methods. One important method of dispersion is mechanical comminution. Due to long and intensive research and development all over the world important advances have been achieved but still a great number of questions and problems occur especially in producing materials of submicron and nanometer grain sizes which could be answered or solved only insufficiently up to now. These mentioned difficulties refer especially to: ò the required energy input into the feed material, ò the forming of strong agglomerates and wall stickings, ò the required product qualities, and ò the entire and reliable characterisation of the products. Basic investigation aim to clarify the micro and macro processes of ultrafine grinding and work towards solutions to the difficulties mentioned above. The aim of the Institute's research is the development of a new grinding device for producing ultrafine powders. First results of a laboratory scale mill of that type will be presented in this paper.

In recent years there have been significant improvements in many areas of the operation, including production, safety, hygiene and environmental performance. Steps taken to achieve these improvements are described. Plans to secure a profitable future while meeting environmental requirements are outlined.

This paper discusses how advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), which is fundamentally reliant on and developed via multi-disciplinary skills, has benefitted non-mining industries, and what lessons can be derived from this experience to benefit the mining industry, particularly underground coal mining. Examples of AMT use in æconventionalÆ industry, some drawn from the more than 25 years experience in many different industries of the Automation and Robotics team at the University of Wollongong, are described to show typical benefits, risks and opportunities expected in using AMT. Applying AMT to mining brings many unique challenges and this paper expands on these and then provides practical examples of how a multi-disciplinary team can develop new processes and systems leading to productivity, safety and other benefits for underground coal mining.

This paper is intended to continue the subject in the light of recent work, from where it was left at the conclusion of the discussion on the excellent paper by the late Mr. Noel Haszard. The position then obtaining is briefly summarised below:-The points which received general agreement at that time were:-'(1) That the gold occurs, probably in an elemental form, in a state of very fine division in the pyrite.(2) That the aim in roasting of Kalgoorlie flotation concentrates should be to obtain the maximum porosity possible. The gold tellurides were amenable to treatment with either a' solution of high lime and cyanide strength combined with fine grinding, or bybromocyanidation without re-grinding.(3) That a low roasting temperature is essential during the elimination of the first atom of sulphur, if the final calcine is to give a good extraction by cyanidation.(4) Even with the best temperature conditions of roasting then determined, and after a period of cyanidation of the calcines until no further extraction was obtainable, the lowest calcine residues obtainable were equivalent to approximately 1·8 dwts. per long ton, based on an original concentrate of pure pyrite.There was some division of opinion at the time as to whether the temperature of the later stages of roasting was significant, and also as to the reason why the initial roasting temperatures had so marked an effect.
