The Department of Resource Industries regulates and oversees safety and environmental standards for the mining and related industries in Queensland, and provides scientific support through its effort in the geosciences.The geoscientific data base accumulated over more than 120 years is very large. Therefore, accessibility to and utilisation of the data base in the most effective manner is an issue to be addressed in terms of modern information technology. The Department has developed a strategy whose implementation is progressing rapidly.

There is no good news! The market environment for raising capital for resource projects is getting tougher. The regulatory and accounting environment is fast becoming more difficult and the hurdles to successfully raising debt, lease, equity or hybrid finance are now considerably higher. As ever, well structured companies and capital issues can and will survive, if not thrive. An outline of the market and regulatory environment for successful issues is set out below, followed by some comparison of stockmarket values of resource assets compared to more technical appraisals.

It is possible from simple gas behavioral theories to develop more complex relationships which allow prediction of transport phenomena such as diffusivity and viscosity of gas mixtures. Such physical data can be used in engineering calculations for both bulk gas movement and gaseous chemical species movement. Both of these are important in the solution of mines ventilation systems. There are specific limits of flammibili!'y of some common mines gases.

The physical phenomena which influence gas flow in the bosh and hearth of a blast furnace are discussed including the hold-up of slag as a mechanism which can result in a flooding condition. An equation is defined which describes the limitation to wind volume arising from the flooding condition. Implications of the various factors influencing bosh and hearth gas flow on furnace operation are discussed. Coke quality is shown to be the most important factor in the aerodynamics of these zones and coke requirements are defined for the Port Kembla No. 5 BF which has an inner volume of 2670 m3.

"One of the key risks to the success of a mining operation is the accuracy of the estimates of both the economic mineral and any accompanying contaminants contained within the ore reserve. Misrepresenting the mineralogical characteristics of the ore reserve can result in considerable financial investment in an operation that is in fact uneconomic and/or carries a significant environmental risk. This in turn can result in an unplanned closure of the operation with associated financial, environmental and social legacy. One way to minimise this risk is to undertake high density resource sampling to gain a better understanding of the resource characteristics. However, such an approach is expensive, time-consuming and often impractical. The risk of not having an accurate model is typically assessed during a feasibility study utilising a Monte Carlo simulation method or some form of sensitivity analysis. Importantly, the error margins used in these types of analyses are often based on subjective or very general criteria such as ‘professional judgement’ or an ‘industry standard’. This presentation introduces a conditional simulation method for developing a range of mineralogical distribution models. Based broadly on the method outlined in Journel and Kyriakidis (2004) the proposed approach develops this work further. It combines a geostatistical analysis of the available data with automated mine design software to provide a rigorous method for assessing the confidence in the mineralogical characterisation of the ore reserve. The process is based on simulating possible mine plans based on the statistical characteristics of the available resource sample data. These plans are then assessed against high resolution resource models generated using a Sequential Gaussian Simulation method. The outcome is confidence intervals for important characteristics of the ore reserve estimate relative to the actual resource. These confidence intervals are an objective and transparent measure important for assessing closure risks and represent an improvement over common practice.CITATION:Trembath, D, 2016. Basic premises for evaluating special characteristics of gold-bearing porphyry metal systems stem from their contrasts with properties of the class as a whole. Included features are differences in geologic, thus tectonic, environments, subtle but real differences in the proportions of accessory metals Mo-Ag-Au that are regionally and within some regions, tempo-rally distinct, contrasts in the Ag:Au ratios, petrological-geo-chemical as well as isotopic differences between intrusive suites, the age and nature of host terranes, contrasts in alter-ation style, and zoning variations of mineralogical and physical properties of rocks. These properties are linked in various ways in different regions and suggest that in large gold-bearing systems where gold may be uniformly distributed, environ-ments of emplacement, and compositions or sources of igneous "progenitors" may dominate in importance over processes, and that systems in which gold is zoned are processes-dominant.

The Porphyry Gold Mine (150km NE of Kalgoorlie) was reopened in November 1983 with production commencing in April 1984. Original reserves quoted for the open pit were 822000 tonnes at 5.2 g/t Au based on wide spaced diamond drill holes. Close spaced grade control drilling has revealed some loss of tonnage and a significantly lower grade. In the area of the pit mined to 30 June 1985 this grade control reserve estimate contained 67% of the gold in the original ore reserve with the grade being 19% lower. It is anticipated that the final grade control reserve estimate will contain around 80-85% of the gold contained in the original reserve. There has been close agreement between the Mill Head grade (4.19 g/t Au) and the grade control predicted grade (4.2 g/t Au) confirming that dilution is not a major problem. After initial poor agreement (attributed to "lock-up" in the circuit) the bullion calculated head grade steadied out at 93% of the grade control prediction. This difference is considered to represent the geostatistical bias in the drill hole/crushed rock sampling. Gold recovery has been in the range 93-95% (compared with bullion calculated grade). The net result is that the recovered grade of ore mined to 30 June 1985 is 70% of the original ore reserve grade.

The history of black coal as a fuel dates back in Europe more than 2,300 years, and possibly longer in China. Originally the mining of coal was done by underprivileged people, but with the industrial revolution and the dawn of mechanisation, the status of the coal miner improved. The improvement continued to the present day. Coal miners now take an important role in industrialised countries and enjoy a high standard of living. The miner is amongst the highest paid and best technologically served in any industrial activity. The abundance of coal relative to alternative fuels and its widespread occurrence, brings with it a prosperity much valued in those countries with significant resources such as Australia. Coal will play a major role in easing the world energy shortage. In addition to the conventional usage, throughout the world coal gasification plants are in various stages of development. Coal liquefaction plants are beyond the drawing board stage. Slurry pipelines to supply coal for direct burning in electric generating and other plants are planned. In the current atmosphere of environment consciousness, Australia has to contend with people with only marginal interest trying to influence coal mining activities to the detriment of the overall prosperity of Australia. Fortunately enlightened legislation is the greatest protector of the environment and in many instances great improvement to the environment ensues after mining has passed. With its vast resources of black coal Australia can look forward to a significant role in future supply of fuel. As a result of the trade and industry involved, Australia can become an even more influential country in world politics, trade, and the setting of high living standards.

The importance of proper planning, preparation, and execution of a steady state sampling campaign for metallurgical plant assessment must not be underestimated. Careful planning can increase the amount and reliability of information from an optimum number of samples and fully utilize available plant data. It requires specification of the data required, determination of run duration sampling frequency, the selection, modification and testing of sample points and cutters, as well as organisation and briefing of plant and sampling personnel. Preparation immediately prior to sampling, the conduct of the sampling campaign itself and procedures to handle the collected samples and information are discussed. Cutter design, fabrication and use are described in detail, and typical sampling situations, for ball mills, classifiers, pipes, launders, flotation cells and thickeners are considered individually. Measurement of pulp flow rate can often resolve difficult mass balance problems, and discussion of convenient techniques is included.

IN preparing a sample of refined lead for analysis, it is necessary to exercise great care to avoid contaminatien, as the amounts of the various impurities present in market lead are very small. The lead is cut into convenient-sized pieces, which are flattened out with a hammer, so that, on putting tbe lead through the rolls, strips of about one inch in width and Ij32iu. in thickness are obtained. The hammer, anvil, and rolls should be carefully cleaned before use. The strips oflead are cut up into pieces of about one inch square. If the lead is roIled out very thin and cut up into small pieces there is considerable risk of the acid acting too violently and causing loss through frothing over. A blank assay on all the reagents used should becarried right through, along with the actual analysis of the lead. This is of the greatest importance, particularly with regard to the determination of such impurities as iron, sulphur, arsenic, and antimony.METHOD OF ANALYSISThe method of analysis is as follows: Take two lots of 600 gIm. each, place in a large beaker, add 2000 cc. distilled water and 750 cc. concentrated HNOs. Cover with a clock glass and warm on a hot asbestos plate until all action ceases. (If any white precipitate forms, filter off and examine for Sn and Sb.) Add 420 cc. H2S04 (1-1), and stir well while adding the acid: Allow PbS04 to settle, pour off the clear liquid into a 12-in. porcelain evaporating dish, and start evaporating down, the dish being placed directly on an 8-in. ring gas burner. Wash the precipitate three times by decantation using approximately 1200 cc. hot water for each washing, and stir well...

This paper reviews methods for grade estimation in short-term mine planning for block caving. Two particular tools are used: Ordinary Kriging and Simple Kriging with moving averages. It is also considered the influence of draw characteristics on the grade estimation process. Reference is made to mine case study data and analysis. These demonstrate that operational grade estimation is not a trivial process. It must take into consideration: the grade variability (in terms of ore and dilution), sampling interval, geological and geotechnical characteristics, geometrical layout and draw characteristics. Significant improvements appear possible in short-term planning if variogram analysis, as well as kriging methodologies, are introduced into the operational grade estimation process.

Reuse of process water in mineral and coal flotation plants is widespread to effectively reduce freshwater consumption. However, the accumulation of the frother in the recycled process water is a growing problem as high remnant frother concentration often leads to undesirable overfrothing issues throughout the plants. Various approaches have been proposed by others to measure frother concentration, but none of them is used in flotation practice owing to the requirement of timeconsuming sample preparation steps and/or specialist training to operate and maintain. There is a pressing need for the development of a simple and fast frother concentration measuring technique to avoid overfrothing issues and to optimise the flotation process. The present paper presents two promising approaches to measuring frother concentration online. The first approach measures the concentration of alcohol type frothers based on the host-guest interactions between frother molecules and a formulated liquid. This method is simple and fast as it only requires mixing the formulated liquid with the water sample for up to one minute. The potential of this approach was demonstrated by determination of the residual MIBC concentrations at different locations across a coal flotation plant. The second approach measures frother concentration using a solid-phase extraction (SPE) process and a cryogen-free benchtop NMR spectrometer. Using this approach, both alcohol type and polyglycol type frother solutions can be analysed for concentration determination within 30 minutes. It has also been demonstrated that the concentration of individual frothers in a frother blend (ie MIBC and PPG425 in water) can be accurately analysed even in the presence of background chemicals. This technique has otential for real-time measurement of frother concentration as the whole process can be fully automated.

Such investigations involve four elements: developer, consultant, approving authority and the public. It is essential that the consultant provide technical competence, speed and efficiency, impartiality and credibi- lity. Despite allegations to the contrary, it is not in the consultant's own best interest to omit, ignore or obscure significant adverse en vironmental impacts.

Reserves of high-grade quartz gravel, lignite, and timber suitable for the production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon on large scale occur within 40 miles of Bluff Harbour. Undeveloped hydroelectric power resources on the Clutha River are located within 50 miles of the most promising quartz gravel deposits while opencastable lignite, potentially suitable for electric power production, occurs in the same locality as the quartz gravels. A preliminary study of production economics indicates that the commercial feasibility of silicon/ferrosilicon production would depend mainly on the cost of electric power, total capital cost of plant, and the market value of the products. The proximity of Bluff Harbour is advantageous for the export of products.

Two continuous computer controlled, remote air analysis (RAA) systems operate at The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) to give early warning in case of an underground fire at ZC or New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mines. Air drawn from underground sampling points via a tube bundle system is analysed for carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. An alarm is sounded if the concentrations of these gases exceed bench mark figures.

Ways in which technology has been introduced into the industry are discussed, as are the means by which the general process of technology transfer takes place. Some possible sources of improved and new technology are considered, together with the constraints to its introduction into the industry. Responses to recent external influences on the industry are discussed in relation to their effects on technology development.

The increasing problems associated with the disposal of waste and the potential for use of by-products as underground filling material is a subject which is relevant not only to the coal-mining industry. The progressive scarcity of surface disposal facilities for by-products and waste has now become a problem in all sectors - not only for the mining industry. The considerable capacity offered by underground cavities which exists in various mining branches present an extremely promising potential in this context. The backfill process for coal mining developed by DMT in co-operation with Ruhrkohle AG make use of the cavities which are offered by the extraction of coal. It consists of several stages: The fine-grained by-products, such as sludge, filter cakes, fine refuse, ash and flue-gas cleaning residues are processed on the basis of specified formulations in metering, blending and pump facilities on the surface to produce pumpable pastes with precisely defined flow characteristics. On Walsum Colliery of Ruhrkohle AG up to 200 m3/h stowing paste is conveyed into the mine in pipes with diameter of 200 mm (8"). The delivery pressure of the pump operating on surface in conjunction with the hydrostatic pressure of the shaft pipe - amounting in total to as much as 25 MPa - makes it possible to convey the stowing material for a distance 12000 m underground up to the workings without any need for additional booster pumps. Via a pipe installed in the face, the paste is pressurised into the cavities in the specially fragmented rock in the mined-out zone well behind the support. Consistent use of stowage of caved-in goafs makes it possible to reduce surface settlement above the workings. Fires in the stowed rock are either smothered or completely prevented thanks to the exceptional air-tightness in the caved goaf and the cooling effects of the slurry stowage. The reduced danger of fire, the preventation of air-leakage and the positive effects on gas emission from the coal improve safety in the workings.

This paper forms part of a series of papers relating to the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop and presented to the Fourth Australian Tunnelling Conference in Melbourne, March 1981. The Design of Electrical and Mechanical Services in Museum Station and adjacent Running Tunnels and their relation to Rail.wruy Operation through the Loop are described. The descriptions, while specific to Muscrio Station, are generally representative of those being provided at Parliament and Flagstaff Stations. The Museum Station comprises some 6500 square metres of platform and track area, 5000 square metres of booking hall concourse and entrances and 1200 square metres of offices and plant rooms. The Mechanical and Ilectrical Services for this complex are .imilar in many aspects to those of a large !.gr.hrise city building, but in general the i::;ign is directed more strongly towards :.arety, durability and reliability, and subject to many restraints imposed by L'mitations of space and accessability.

Mining and beneficiation can be described as sequential processes of separation of valuable minerals from waste. There is a great deal of interest in how the industry can be more effective – and efficient – with these processes. In particular, many mining companies are looking towards digital technologies to improve precision mining practices; that is, the targeted identification and separation of valuable ore from waste during the mining process. This paper examines the importance of processing to the properties and performance of high purity zirconia ceramics. Many of the principles discussed, however, apply to ceramic processing in general. For fabricated ceramic articles to display their wide range of high performance properties, they must be made fully dense. The precursor powder and postpowder processing requirements necessary to achieve full density in the fabricated body are discussed. Brittleness, the anathema of ceramics, can be overcome in zirconia by incorporation of toughening mechanisms. Transformation toughening and microcrack toughening and their origins in partially stabilized zirconia are reviewed.
