The electrification of Australian mine sites will see a boom in the use of batteries of all chemistries. Lead acid batteries, a traditional mainstay of the mining industry, are expected to nearly double by 2030, however their use will be eclipsed by the explosive growth in lithium batteries. By 2030 the lithium battery market is forecast to be nearly four times the size of the lead acid battery market. Unfortunately, this will result in a corresponding avalanche of waste batteries to be disposed of. Barely a day goes by without battery generated fires being reported in the media and they have become an increasing nightmare for waste management companies and waste facilities. The safe recycling of batteries will also become increasingly important for mine sites to achieve their sustainability goals and reduce their environmental footprint. What are the risks posed by waste batteries, what are the regulatory requirements and how can you manage or eliminate these risks? What current practises does your mine site currently have for the safe management and disposal of batteries from your site? How prepared are you for the coming avalanche of waste batteries?

Finite element analysis is becoming a routine component of design of longwall extractions, now superseding more traditional somewhat intuitive approaches. Finite element modelling is relatively inexpensive and provides an adequate degree of similitude to give satisfactory analysis. The physical modelling of two decades ago is now largely replaced by numerical methods of which finite element is the best known. Important data for finite element work are physical properties, including creep aspects, introducing the non-linearity of stress response.Various computer packages are available and some were used to model two specific UK examples, using both linear and non-linear approaches. It appears that non-linear approaches will yield most benefit. The use of materially non-linear analysis is merited by the greater similitude it provides between model output and real mine situations.

A method for relating operating variables and dewatering parameters of Thunes disc filters in the LKAB pelletizing plant at Malmberget in Sweden, via empirical mathematical models is described. Near orthogonal experimental design was used, where all independentvariables were allowed to span over their domain of variation and pseudo-randomly distributed among the experiments. The dewatering parameters are dependent on many variables and instead of using a traditional mechanistic model, an empirical model based on multivariate data analysis was chosen. The way of expressing the relation is by regression coefficients obtained from partial least square regression (PLS). Two empirical models were generated. The models were validated using an extra set of 56 experiments. The dewatering parameters were related to the design variables with few experiments, and user-friendly response surface methodology was used to determine the optimal conditions.

Corrosion is a chemical or electro-chemical attack on a metal by the surrounding medium, and it can be stated in general terms that a non-corrodible metal possesses that property either because there is no chemical action between it and the medium, or because the medium reacts quickly with the metal to produce a thin protective coating.When iron or steel is attacked by dilute mineral acids, for example, the products of the reaction are soluble and the formation of a protective film cannot take place; on the other hand, rusting produces a porous film which flakes away and offers little protection to the underlying metal. However, when chromium is alloyed with iron, its resistance to corrosion is improved because the films produced on such alloys become more adherent and tenacious as the proportion of chromium is increased. The island chains of the Western Pacific (Fig. 1), on account of their related origin, and the similarity of the rocks that compose them, constitute in the main a most homogeneous mineral province. They lie in a complex "mobile" zone of the earth's crust, that formed a geosynclinal area separating the continental margins of Australia and South-Eastern Asia (the so-called Sundaland) from each other, and from the margin of the Pacific Ocean proper (FIg. 2). The whole region was drowned at the close of the Ice Age, as a result of the rise of sea-level that accompanied the melting of the great ice caps in the polar regions, leaving only the higher portions as islands and peninsulas, many of them separated only by shallow seas or "shelves."The geosyncline was infilled with Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments that have undergone varying intensities of folding and metamorphism, and has been subject to intermittent periods of volcanic activity, continuing into the present. Midway between the two continental margins there is a narrow belt of pronounced negative gravity anomalies, with an extraordinary S-shaped convolution in the vicinity of the Banda Sea and Celebes, that marks the core of this unstable region. The folding within the "mobile" zonetrends parallel to it, so that the islands in its vicinity, which are regions elevated by folding, are all elongated in the strike direction of the folds. This explains not only the linear shape of Sumatra and Java, but the arc of islands enclosing the Banda Sea, and the peculiar shape of Celebes.Parallel to the belt of negative anomalies, at a close remove from it, is the line of Recent, or active volcanoes, that extends along the whole length of Sumatra and Java...

While convergence of plates at a subduction zone produces shortening at the toe of the overriding plate, this deformation is localized to the frontal 100 km or so of the plate. There is increasing evidence that the state of strain in back-arcs, volcanic arcs, and possibly the entire forearc is extensional. The most likely cause of this extension is rollback of the subducting plate and trenchward advance of the overriding plate. Arcs are thermally weakened, and are activated repeatedly through time. The primary expression of the extensional state of strain is spreading of the weak arc material, either by splitting the arc or by back-arc spreading behind it. During devolatilisation, physical behaviour of coals was investigated in horizontal electrically heated furnace with an inert gas atmosphere, and gasification rates of four coal chars and coke were measured thermogravimetrically in a carbon dioxide atmosphere at temperatures in the range 1100oC - 1500oC. The volume change of chars was also measured in horizontal electrically heated furnace at various temperatures. Both reactivity and the activation energy for the gasification of coal chars were found to be strongly influenced by pore structure and the carbonisation conditions employed during preparation. CO2 reactivity of chars increases with increasing reaction temperature, and particularly increases more rapidly over 1300¦C. CO2 reactivity of coke is lower than that of non-coking coal chars in the range of 1100¦C to 1500¦C. CO2 reactivity of chars with smaller pore area and bigger pore diameter is less than that of chars with bigger pore area and smaller pore diameter. During gasification, the volume of chars did not change significantly at the lower temperatures of 1100¦C and 1200¦C, but at the high temperatures, 1300¦C to 1500¦C, the volume of chars quickly decreased due to ash softening and melting. The CO2 reactivities of the chars are controlled by the mixed control of chemical reaction and pore diffusion in the temperature range 1100¦C to 1300¦C, and by bulk diffusion in the temperature range 1400¦C to 1500¦C.

SustainabilityÆs imperative of economic development in tandem with social advancement and environmental protection is widely accepted, but much debate remains about the practical implications for the minerals processing technologies and practices for the future. Experience in other industry sectors however suggests that sustainability can be a value-adding framework for innovation in processing technologies, business models and management systems. This position paper explores how sustainability can drive innovation in minerals processing, by reviewing pertinent ideas and experiences gained in non-minerals sectors. Sustainable innovations can generally be broadly ranked from incremental to transformative, with each category having its own typical improvement potential, timescale and technological and operational challenges. This leads to a æmud mapÆ for sustainable innovation in minerals processing with three distinct tracks: eco-efficient operations; sustainable plant design and sustainable processing. Competing models for the sustainable innovation process through either forecasting or back-casting, have in common the strong reliance on vision, perspective and competency, which in turn highlights the importance of sustainability frameworks. Such sustainability frameworks provide normative goals and option elicitation prompts to assist with the analysis of current processes and scoping of more sustainable alternatives. A comparative analysis of five prominent environmental sustainability frameworks revealed three cross cutting sustainability themes that challenge current resource processing technologies and practices. These are: fate of materials (zero dissipation of materials); compatibility of materials and processes; and materials intensity of industrial products and processes. Although the sustainability concepts presented in this paper have not been extensively road tested in the minerals processing industry, there is ample evidence that recent initiatives in the Australian resource sector illustrate the applicability of the proposed framework. It is therefore argued that more in-depth assessment of sustainable innovation concepts would be a valuable contribution to the sustainable resource processing theory and practice.

The New England Fold Belt forms the easternmost and youngest section of the Tasman Fold Belt System of eastern Australia. From middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous time it was the site of extensive episodic calc-alkaline magmatism related to W-dipping subduction. The oldest rocks may have formed at least partly in a volcanic island arc, but from the Late Devonian, the fold belt developed as a convergent Pacific-type continental margin. For Late Devonian-Carboniferous time, parallel belts representing continental margin volcanic arc, forearc basin and subduction complex assemblages can be recognised. Major dextral transform faulting may have offset parts of the fold belt in the Late Carboniferous. In addition, some structural blocks which appear to be out of place in the overall palaeogeographic setting are possible exotic or suspect terranes. A great variety of lode deposits ranging in age from middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous is present in the New England Fold Belt. The vast majority of these are related to emplacement of extensive granite plutons and eruption of continental silicic volcanics in Late Permian-Late Triassic time. However, volcanogenic massive sulphides and volcanic hosted epithermal gold-silver deposits in older rock sequences include one major orebody (Mount Morgan) and several important ones (Mount Chalmers, Cracow, Silver Spur, Cangai and Halls Peak). Some problematical deposits are best classified as metamorphic-hydrothermal. These include gold-bearing quartz reefs and stockworks in sedimentary host rocks, the most important of which are at Gympie, and antimony-gold- tungsten mineralisation in the New England area, mainly at Hillgrove.

Longwall advance mining is still the predaninant system of coal extraction in the U.K., contribiiting to sane 70 % of underground coal production. Gate roadways providing access to a longwall advancing coal face are maintained adjacent to a rib pillar under high strata abutment pressures and the caving rock mass. It is very difficult to realistically model such access roadways using mathematical or numerical techniques and hence, predict roadway closure. For the past 15 years, a research group in Nottingham University has been engaged in the study of longwall gate roadway stability using observation methods. Gate roadway deformations have been measured in 224 gate roadways and a comprehensive data base has been established. The paper describes the statistical analysis of this database and presents sane. predictive equations which will enable a forecast of the gate roadway closure to he made. Further field work to validate these equations. is described together with an error analysis. The results are very promising and indicate that it is possible to predict gate roadway closure in the U.K. within practical limits of Accuracy.

A fast, non-contact technique for measuring sizes of rock fragments on a conveyor belt is presented. An image processing technique called active stereopsis is used which makes use of a light stripe projected on to the surface of the fragments on the conveyor belt. A CCD TV camera is used to capture the shape of the distorted light stripe. the video image of this shape is then processed by a computer program so that the 3D profile of the surface can be obtained by triangulation. The sizes of the rock fragments are then calculated from this profile. The speed of the technique is improved by calibrating the light stripe system before measurement begins so that the profile of the fragment surface can then be measured using simple geometry. The technique is fast and highly parallel so that it is able to operate in real time.

The reduction of an ilmenite concentrate with coal at 1000, 1050 and 1100¦C was investigated using thermogravimetry and X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis of the product. The effects of temperature, coal particle size, addition of ferric chloride and preheating of the concentrate in argon on the reduction kinetics and mechanism were determined. The rate of reduction increased significantly with temperature and was enhanced by the addition of the catalyst. The morphology of the iron was primarily determined by the degree of weathering of the particle. Significant coarsening of iron was obtained in the dense particles by the addition of ferric chloride. The sequence of reduction and the enhancement in the rate of reduction by preheating the concentrate in an inert atmosphere are discussed.

Most orebodies have one or more boundaries which are gradational, where the decision to stop mining is based on an economic cut-off. To maximise profit, this cut-off grade must be chosen correctly. It is necessary to review cut-off grades regularly, as the optimum cut-off grade changes with time, and major changes are hard to implement in a working mine without disruption to production schedules.Whenever a cut-off grade is used, there will be errors in its application caused by errors in the estimation of block grade. These can be minimised by stringent quality control in sampling and by the use of kriging, which attempts to minimise the absolute errors in grade estimation. The kriging method used should produce the most accurate estimates of marginal grade blocks - this will not necessarily be the technique that gives the best overall prediction of head grades.

The Dome Mine of Timmins Mining company is located in South Porcupine, N.W. Ontario. The orebody being mined partially lies in the No. 3 shaft pillar. Stability analysis has been carried out to establish the influence of nearby mining on ground movement in the shaft vicinity. Mathematical modelling of shaft displacement has been done for stope layout at depths from 180-210 m and distances of 10-50 m from the shaft. Analysis indicated that ground displacement around the shaft is below 1 mm/m and one third less for cut and fill than in the case of open stope mining. The result of the investigation was later confirmed by cut and fill mining of this orebody.

Anglo Platinum is the worldÆs largest producer of platinum group metals, and also produces large quantities of nickel, copper and cobalt at its Refining complex in Rustenburg, South Africa. In 1995 Anglo Platinum embarked on a smelter modernisation project, primarily to reduce site emissions to below the guideline limit of 20 tonnes per day SO2, but also to increase the converting capacity in line with future projected production profiles. To achieve these requirements the existing Pierce Smith converters were replaced with a single large Ausmelt converter and a new acid plant. This was the first time that an Ausmelt furnace had been used for converting, but it had the advantages of being a very robust furnace and was fully enclosed, giving good gas capture. It was thus considered the most appropriate technology from both a process and an environmental perspective. It also enabled the smelting and converting furnaces to be decoupled. The plant was commissioned from late 2001 and the first tap was in June 2002. Despite being a new technology, ramp-up has been similar to other large scale pyrometallurgical operations. Numerous process improvements have been made since start-up, most notably a change from two-stage batch to fully continuous, resulting in the plant now operating above design in terms of throughput. Optimisation of freeboard accretion control was also a major component of the ramp-up activity. This paper discusses the commissioning and ramp-up issues of the new Ausmelt converting furnace, concentrating on the design and process changes, and summarises current operating performance against the original design objectives.

The Ellalong Colliery has been the first to mine the Greta Seam using the longwall method. Analysis of data from geotechnical monitoring has pointed to the role of the strong, massive sandstones of the Branxton formation in the development of loads on the powered supports and pillars. Failure of the sandstone intermediate-roof has been related to first-weight and periodic weighting, measured on the supports, using simple "voussior" analysis. Stress changes, including triaxial components measured in the barrier and chain pillars, have been compared with 2- and 3- dimensional numerical models. The applicable range of the models for the prediction of pillar loads under the strong roof is discussed.

In common with several great orebodies and mineral camps around the world Broken Hill has been the subject of state-of-the-art technical and scientific scrutiny during its long working life. During the early years geological interest in Broken Hill tended to be directed at the body for its intrinsic scientific worth, mainly on account of its large size, high grade and wealth of mineral species. For much of the last 60 years the interest has had a more applied motivation, namely, to assist the search for either repetitions in the Broken Hill field or analogues in other terrains. This paper looks at the major changes in geological concepts and exploration techniques applied at Broken Hill and attempts to assess their impact.

The goal of the life-of-mine plan is to ensure that while the site is left safe, stable and non-polluting, the landscape is such that optimal use can be made of the site post-mining and closure. However, in the face of evolving shareholder expectations and the current international economic climate, numerous mines are ceasing operations and moving into a care and maintenance phase. These changes bring with them a high degree of community concern, not only about the potential legacy of closed operations, but also those mines that continue to operate.While mines across Australia are committed from the earliest planning stage to develop clearly defined post-mining land use and landform objectives, broader expectations related to these objectives may change and evolve during the life of the operation. This is especially the case where a mining operation has a project approval where the land use objectives are aligned to land capability and land use commensurate to that which occurred premining. HPGR technology has been used at a number of magnetite mines in the world and have significant energy advantages over SAG and AG technologies. The early design at Los Colorados in Chile has been in operation for more than 12 years - and operates very successfully though only reduces the feed size to -5mmThe Whyalla project magnet design pushed the concept to produce a preconcentrate of 80%-350micron - a significant reduction on previous plants though with some wear problems in the early years. The Karara design backpedalled slightly and will only crush to 80%-1.8mm.However, the design issues of using a HPGR to further reduce the feed size continue to be explored. The aim is to reduce the process risks associated with wear and also to reduce the complexity of the downstream process - with consequent benefits in terms of capital and operating costs.The designs are being developed for a couple of projects - one planned to produce 20Mtpa of concentrate with the potential to not only remove SAG and AG milling but also ball milling. The concept is to use multiple passing through the HPGR since, on the data available, the efficiency of the HPGR to reduce size does not significantly diminish as the feed size is reduce.
