The Ranger Uranium Mine is located in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics approximately 250 km east of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia (Figure 1). Mining of open-cut ore bodies commenced in 1980 (Pit 1) and ceased in 2012 (Pit 3) and milling and production are scheduled to cease by 2021. At the conclusion of mining and milling operations, mine tailings will be returned to the mined out pits 1 and 3, which must then be physically isolated from the environment for at least 10,000 years (Australian Government 1999). The final landform also needs to have sufficient mitigation measures in place to ensure that areas downstream are not impacted by erosion products from the mine site. The proposed post-mining rehabilitated landform will cover approximately 847 hectares (8.5 km2) which represents an area that has the potential to supply sediment to catchments and streams downstream. One method of reducing runoff and associated sediment is the construction of rip lines along the contour to slow down the runoff velocity and to also trap fine sediment and nutrients in the depressions to assist vegetation growth.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Lowry, J B C, 2018. Tailings facilities tell a story to the public about how the mining industry manages its activities. They also create a risk that must be managed for the long term. All the knowledge and technology is available to safely design, build, operate and decommission tailings facilities.   Tailings at Waikato North Head Minesite are pumped as slurry, over long distances and against high static discharge heads to backfill the excavated area. WNH is, under the mining licence, obliged to reconcile the topography of mined areas to the closest possible resemblance of the original terrain. The active tailings areas are located near main operational facilities and detailed plans and procedures have been developed to ensure a safe and continuous operation.   The concentration plant is designed as two identical and independent plants. Each plant has its own tailings slurry pumping system.   This paper represents a general overview of the tailings disposal practice at WNH mine site. It discusses tailings delivery, construction and water management.

Detailed geochemical analysis of cored and non-cored drill hole data was used to characterise and model the Cenozoic detrital valleys of several deposits within the southern Pilbara region, Western Australia. The purpose of this modelling was to better characterise and understand the relationships between the various geotechnical units comprising mixtures of rock and soil for the purposes of slope stability and depressurisation studies.This paper presents data from several valleys where geological, geomorphological and climatic processes have resulted in the deposition of heterogeneous detrital rock and soil sequences. Seven primary detrital units are recognised as occurring within all the valleys studied, suggesting that the geological processes involved in the erosion and deposition of the units were widespread. Geochemical assessment of cored and non-cored data suggests correlatable geochemical signatures can be recognised for each of the units; however, local variability in the groundwater history of individual valleys is demonstrated by late-stage carbonate precipitation recognised both in the core and through the geochemical signatures, which has resulted in alteration of the parent rock/soil material. This paper discusses how the carbonate alteration may lead to improvements in rock/soil mass strength of a clay unit by comparing laboratory strength test samples of the same parent material with varying degrees of precipitate alteration to those with no discernible carbonate alteration. Following from this, correlations with geochemical assay results have been derived, whereby zones of more favourable strength conditions may be modelled through assessing areas of analogous geochemistry.The paper demonstrates how geochemical assessment can lead to improved geotechnical and hydrological modelling for a detrital valley system without the need for significant coring and laboratory testing. The Mt Todd Project is located 42 km northwest of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The identified mineral resource estimate for the Batman gold deposit is 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t). Proved and Probable Ore Reserves total 42.3 Mt grading 1.5 g/t. Orebody definition and reserve estimation is based on extensive percussion and diamond drilling. Exhaustive bias analysis comparing grades produced from different drilling techniques has been undertaken. Similarly, detailed check assaying programs have been run to validate grade data produced by commercial laboratories used during the exploratory drilling phase. Significant biases were established from both studies and appropriate 'corrections' were made to drillhole databases prior to final resource and reserve estimation. 3D geostatistical modelling has been utilised for resource and reserve estimation, with specialist consultants contracted for this work. The difference between a hypothetical and a theoretical approach is considered and the advantages in using a hypothesis is discussed. Virgin horizontal stresses play an important role in stabilising strata which bridge across an excavation, and reduces the tensile stresses which develop in a beam subjected to bending. Simple formulae are deduced for the bridging of a thick massive stratum under such conditions. At shallow depths, tensile failure on the upper side of the beam is the most likely cause of fracture, but below a certain depth this gives place to compressive failure on the underside, with the possible incidence of rock bumps. The presence of strong massive beds delay the onset of subsidence and may restrict the width of the subsidence trough. If the material involved in the caving is strong, this will reduce the final subsidence, especially at shallow depths. The British regulations for the control of aquifers and their dependence on the strain developed at the seabed are discussed. As an alternative, the concept of a disturbance factor is introduced to permit the consider- ation of aquifers at depth, leading to an explanation of the make of water on the first faces to be mined in the Selby Coalfield. 'Elie paper closes with a brief consideration of the different roles played by longwall face supports in the control of readily cavable strata, and the control of strong beds which hold up in the waste.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the Short Wave Infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a Quartz- Sericite-Pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

The computing needs of a mine planning office vary greatly depending on the staff available and the nature of the work undertaken. Some offices work acceptably with few aids apart from hand held calculators while others use mainframe computers with associated data bases and sophisticated mine planning software. Not every mine planning office requires the big system approach but all can benefit from the intelligent use of small computers. There is virtually no limit to the design problems which can be solved using modern desktop computers. The simple language required encourages engineers to work interactively to facilitate both large and small computations. However a limit does exist in the speed and ease with which solutions can be obtained. The important ingredients for the successful application of such machines are a little computing knowledge, a flexible machine, and an engineer who really understands the mining problems confronting him. If these are available it is possible for the engineer to tailor the program to the task at hand and efficiently achieve the required result.

This paper introduces a classification of gold orebodies, and comments on the importance of cutting high grade values, the choice of an appropriate ore reserve method and the necessity for producing recoverable ore reserves by considering the mining policy. The author stresses the importance of obtaining the appropriate information from the data relevant to a particular deposit as opposed to transfering parameters from one deposit to another.

In 1974 a preliminary study of the refractories industry in theRepublic of Indonesia was completed by Crown Lynn Consultants, a subsidiary of Cerarnco Ltd., on behalf of the Indonesian and New Zealand Governments. As a result of recommendations arising from that study the two Governments commissioned, in 1976, as a Bilateral Assistance project, an investigation into the potential of the refractories industry in Indonesia. Ceramco Ltd., was retained to carry out the study on behalf of the New Zealand Government. The Directorate-General of Chemical Industries, Directorate of Silicate Industries administered the project on behalf of the Indonesian Government. Indonesian counterparts to the New Zealand study team were provided by the Directorate of Silicate Industries.

The Suurikuusikko gold deposit was discovered in 1987 in western Finnish Lapland, 54 km NNE from the town centre of KittilS in the volcanic belt of Central Lapland. It is hosted by tholeiitic basalts in a graphite-bearing albitite breccia. The ore is located in subvertical shear zones characterised by strong albitisation, carbonatisation and sulfidisation. The ore minerals consist of arsenopyrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bournonite and rutile. Small amounts of pyrrhotite, gersdorffite, jamesonite, bornite, gudmundite, tetrahedrite, stibnite, kermesite, berthierite and native Sb are also present. Gold occurs as invisible and as 1 - 2 ¦m size inclusions in arsenopyrite and pyrite, on their grain boundaries and in fractures. The average amount of gold leached by cyanide is 2.93 per cent. The æinvisibleÆ gold contents were studied in pyrite and arsenopyrite by electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) at CANMET/ MTL. Gold element distribution images show zoned patterns both in pyrite and arsenopyrite. SIMS analyses range from 343 to 55 ppm Au in arsenopyrite and from 217 ppm down to 0.32 ppm (detection limit 478 ppb) Au in pyrite. EPMA results range from 939 to below the detection limit 24 ppm Au in arsenopyrite and from 267 ppm to below 22 ppm Au in pyrite. Recovery of the refractory gold ore was studied using grinding, flotation, bio-oxidation and cyanidation tests. A sulfide bulk concentrate containing 40 ppm Au was obtained by flotation at 90 per cent recovery (As content 5.5 per cent, S content 22 per cent, and mass recovery 15 per cent). The grinding fineness in flotation was P80 -100 to 120 ¦m. At the original fineness the cyanidation recovery from the concentrate was lower than ten per cent, after ultra-fine grinding P80 -10 to 2 ¦m the Au recovery was less than 17 per cent. After bio- oxidation, Au recovery of 95 per cent was obtained in carbon-in-leach (CIL). The bio-oxidation time was two weeks in laboratory test, but after regrinding the oxidation rate was faster and recovery of Au higher. However, the selected method for the mining to be started in summer 2008 is open pit mining and mineral processing methods sulfide flotation and pressure oxidation in an autoclave. The ore reserves were estimated 31 December 2007 as: Probable 18.2 Mt with 5.1 g/t Au, Indicated 5.4 Mt with 3.0 g/t Au and Inferred 10.8 Mt with 3.4 g/t Au. The production capacity will be 3000 t/day.

The process selection and design aspects to treat primary ore in a new carbon-in-pulp (C.I.P.) plant while utilizing, where possible, existing equipment and infra- structure are discussed. The existing crushing plant, water supply, reagents, laboratory and infrastructure facilities from the heap leach have been upgraded and expanded to meet the C.I.P. plant requirements. The new power supply is from the North Queensland grid system. A series of metallurgical tests was carried out and a review of the data showed that the primary ore was amenable to conventional cyanide leaching. Following feasibility studies, a new process plant which included grinding mills, leaching, and adsorption tanks, thickener, desorption and gold roam facilities was constructed.

Unnamed early prospectors panned gold from creeks drain- ing the Great Dividing Range in the early part of 1851. The first publicised discovery was credited to Edward Hargraves near Bathurst in New South Wales later in 1851 and during the ensu- ing gold rush, prospectors rapidly made discoveries elsewhere in New South Wales and later across the border in Victoria. Reference to the attached graphs of gold production indicates that for much of the first 100 years, gold production came from the easily worked and readily discovered shallow alluvial deposits, many of which were located in the creeks draining mountainous regions of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland (Fig. 1 and 2). As these deposits were exhausted, prospectors turned their attention to outcrop lode deposits which led to the development of underground mining techniques and a significant boost in over- all gold production. With the discovery of the rich Golden Mile lodes in Kalgoorlie in 1893, gold production increased signifi- cantly and peaked around the turn of the century. At that time, the enormous potential of the great Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa had only just been appreciated and for a few years, Australia led the world in gold production (1855-1863 and again in 1903). Underground mining continued in the Eastern Goldfields area of Western Australia, the Bendigo-Ballarat region of Victoria and in northeast Queensland. Very few of these operations continued beyond the Second World War, except the larger producers in the Kalgoorlie region where recovered grade had dropped to about 6 g/t Au. By the early 1970s with the gold price fixed at US$35 per ounce, most of the operations were shut down as labour costs escalated, with only the low cost bulk mining operation at Mt. Charlotte and the high grade reefs at Norseman continuing in Production.

The increasing use of continuous miners in the extraction of high coal seams has amplified the need for enhanced ventilation systems in the headings. Owing to larger face dimensions and higher production rates, more ventilating air is required to effectively dilute liberated methane to acceptable concentrations. However, the increased air quantities raise and entrain greater amounts of dust, to which the operator is subjected. Various methods (eg sprayfans, on-board scrubbers and jet fans) are used in various configurations and combinations to ventilate the headings. These arrangements generally result in a complex air flow pattern, which complicates achieving an optimum balance between diluting methane and minimising dust capture. In order to cost effectively investigate and propose solutions to this problem for the South African coal mining industry, the Division of Mining Technology has embarked on an extensive work program to evaluate various ventilation methods presently in use. Four currently generic ventilation patterns in various heading scenarios have been simulated using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) computer program. Evaluating these outputs against a predetermined set of criteria allows the best system for a particular situation to be chosen. The program also facilitates fine-tuning of an adopted system without incurring the cost and inconvenience of doing such tests in situ. This process not only provides solutions at significantly reduced costs, but also yields deeper insights into the factors affecting heading ventilation than hitherto possible.

Boliden's Aitik open pit mine located in northern Sweden, will expand yearly production from 18 to 36 Mt of copper ore during 2010. The expansion includes a new concentrator located 3 km off the pit, two new apron feeder crushers connected to the ore storages and concentrator with conveyors at a total length of 7 km. The concentrator has two lines with autogenous grinding mills and flotation each with a capacity of 18 Mt. Consequently the mine operation has to be expanded. To achieve this, there was several parallel processes ongoing; investments in new equipment, reorganisations, improvement projects in maintenance and productivity. The Aitik 72 project was started to coordinate productivity and mine planning activities. Initially the long-term strategic mine plan called for a total movement of ore and waste to increase from 40 to 72 Mt but has today increased to 89 Mt. Productivity projects have been focused on load and haul activities such as fuel economics (Renstr÷m, 2007), effective utilisation of trucks partly by increasing manning levels, improved dispatch and shovel utilisation focusing on optimal use of loader/truck fleets. The eco-driving projects previously reported have reduced fuel consumption significantly. This project is also a productivity project, as part of the fuel savings comes from minimising idle engine hours due to queues, break-downs, operator shift changes, etc but also from under and overloading. Effective use of truck fleets, ie transport of material, loading and dumping, thus excluding non-productive engine hours has been an essential motivator when deciding the size and number of new trucks required. This has resulted in a reduction of the investment with at least one but maybe two trucks. A third major project was to optimise shovels together with truck fleet by improving short-term, up to two weeks, detailed planning of drilling and shovel activities. Daily scheduled breaks for maintenance as well as planning of shovel utilisation, down to shift level are included in the production plans. KPIs and online production reports, based on real-time monitoring of drill rigs, shovels and trucks, have been an essential tool used regularly to engage and motivate mine production personal and information reporting to management. Several projects have already reached their goals. The projects will continue throughout 2010 to ensure that productivity targets are met.

This paper discusses a long range mine plan development at the Santa Fe Pacific Gold Twin Creeks Mine based on the reserves of Mega pit. The key constraints of the schedule development included two types of mill ore targets (sulphide and oxide mill ore), consideration of blending of six chemical constituents (sulphide sulphur, carbonate, organic carbon, the ratio of iron/[arsenic, antimony]), and mining of acid generating and acid neutralizing waste at pre-defined proportions. Solution approaches, selected results, and project experiences are discussed.

In order to provide a'valid description of the performance of size classifying equipment it is necessary that a standard procedure be established for testing and for the subsequent expression of results. Such a standard would permit the valid comparison of alternative equipment and may provide a basis for the prediction of performance. An Australian Standard (AS 1634-1974) has been used as the starting point for an International Standards Organisation-(ISO) working group (of which the authors are members) charged with the preparation of an ISO Standard for the expression and presentation of the results of tests on coal size classifying equipment. The approach taken is applicable to all types of sizing equipment (cyclones, screens, dedusters, etc.) and should be suitable for adoption in the minerals industry as well as by coal preparation engineers. The background to the proposed Standard, is given,including a critical review of other frequently quoted performance measures, the procedures described in the draft are discussed, and an example given.

The Sto Tomas II orebody of Philex Mining Corporation is a porphyry copper deposit located at Padcal, Tuba, Benguet, Philippines. It was mined through open pit method for the first two years starting 1958 and subsequently through underground method using the Block Cave System. The slusher type of draw was employed at the upper levels of the orebody from mid-year of 1959 up to 1994 and then shifted to LHD as the ore became more competent at the lower levels. Application of rock mechanics played a vital role during the conceptualisation of the LHD method of draw, the first of its kind in the Philippines. Rock mechanics is a combined responsibility of the geology and the mine engineering staffs, with the geology providing the vital information to the mine engineering to include in the mine planning the following:the general geology of the orebody; the ground characterisation through rockmass classification; determination of the cavability of the ore column (this includes our experience on airblasts which occurred during the early stage of our last slusher blocks); undercutting sequence; fragmentation of the rockmass in the ore column; drawzone spacing; proper draw control procedure; lay-out of openings; and the design of ground supports based on the rockmass condition. For the proper interpretation of the rockmass that would cater to the diverse mining situations, Philex adopted the modified geomechanics rockmass classification (Mining Rockmass Rating, MRMR) as this system is recognised and used by most of the block cave mine worldwide. This paper aims to discuss and present the role of rock mechanics in the analysis and determination of geomechanical issues encountered in Philex mechanised block cave operation.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face. The evaluation of ore deposits consumes much effort, cost and time, hence research work must aim to minimize these inputs with no loss of accuracy. The present study is devoted to assess the optimum conditions and methods of calculations which give minimum costs of ore exploration. An area of (a x a) where "a" is the zone of influence of the semi-variogram, i.e. (2800 x 2800 square metres) located within the Abu Tartur plateau is the subject of the intensive study. The distances between boreholes are varied ie. a/4, a/6, a/8 and a/ 10 respectively. The average ore grade (G), thickness (t) and relative ore reserves (tG) are calculated by four methods. The results indicate that at a distance equal to a/5, the inverse distance squared method gives the best results. These parameters save about 50 percent of the cost of exploration with a map accuracy greater than 90 Percent.

Sustainability will become a more stringent issue in mine planning over the next 40 years. The evidence of this is apparent in State and Commonwealth government policies now emerging in respect to water, green house gases, waste and other process emissions. The mining industry has developed policies such as æEnduring ValueÆ, which go some way towards establishing a framework within which mining can continue to be an underpinning strength within the Australian economy. However, the demands of new policies are directed at extending sustainability in ways that will change the way in which projects are implemented. This paper examines the nature of new policies aimed at water, energy and emissions, considering examples of where mining practices have or may change in order to meet new objectives in resource efficiency. Important issues will, as always, be the international price competitiveness of the mineral resources being produced but, where this is now devolved around mining and processing costs, these costs may in the future be strongly correlated to the nature and cost of local energy resources compared with those in Australia, the ability to mitigate and minimise water resource use and environmental impacts deriving from emissions and the veracity of competitor nations in meeting the same standards of performance in resource efficiency usage and in emissions control. As these systems bed down internationally mining in Australia will need to concentrate, amongst other things, on finding higher grade orebodies and on better technologies to release the value of lower grade ores. For our mining industry to remain strong, greater expenditure will need to be focused on these objectives. Finally, it will be important for the industry to remain vigilant and proactive in directing government policy development to ensure that practical objectives in mining are not curtailed unnecessarily through ignorance of mining market precepts developed over the centuries of mining operations.
