In 1965, Peter Flawn author of the famous text-book on Mineral Resources (1966) published a paper in Economic Geology with the delightful title `Who took the `Economic' out of Economic Geology?'. He opened this most interesting article with the following paragraph:If one were called upon to cite an example of a fish out-of-water he could hardly pick a better one than a recent graduate of geology of an America university who is suddenly faced with the responsibility of evaluating or appraising a mineral property. And I venture to say that the 'ftsh' with a doctorate - even in economic geology - is not much better equipped than one holding a lesser degree. The new graduate with a major in economic geology probably knows the significance of the various sulphur isotopes, he surely knows a great deal about the chemistry of the ore forming fluids and he recites with ease the arguments which prove deposits are epigenetic rather than syngenetic. However he is a rare bird indeed if he knows anything about the economics of the mineral industry. The truth is that geologists who are engaged in evaluation work are largely self taught. I ask my more distinguished and experienced colleagues - `Has it always been this way? Who took the `economic' out of economic geology?

Australia has a long and successful record in mineral processing technology extending over 100 years. This has included the development of new processes and equipment and new analytical techniques. These developments have added greatly to the efficiency of mineral processing and thereby to Australia's national wealth. Demands on mineral processing engineers in the future show no signs of diminishing, in fact they will increase considerably as more difficult areas must be treated and the requirements for quality control become more stringent. These demands must be met successfully since mineral processing must continue to be one of the most important technologies in Australia's economic future.

In 1972 the Marra Mamba Iron Formation in the Lower Proterozoic Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia was recognised as a stratigraphic horizon with significant potential for high grade iron ore reserves. Within the Newman area the Marra Mamba Iron Formation has been subdivided into four strati- graphic units: Lower BIF member, Middle BIF and shale member, Upper BIF member and Upper shale member - and a standard natural gamma log reference section compiled for the entire formation. The recognition of the Upper shale member as an additional unit contrasts to the previously proposed stratigraphy. Enrichment of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation to ore grade (0)8 percent calcined Fe) in the Newman area is restricted to the Upper BIF member and to a lesser extent to the Middle BIF and shale member. Typical ore from Orebody 29 is friable interbedded martite-ochreous goethite, signifi aptly different both physically and chemically from the Brockman Iron Formation ores of the Tom Price-Whaleback type. Large scale customer acceptance trials (in excess of 4 million tonnes) have shown that Marra Mamba ore crushed to fines and blended with Mt. Whaleback fines in a ratio of up to 15:85 forms an acceptable sinter feed.

Only by developing a thorough understanding of the issues involved and stakeholder interrelationships can successful strategies be developed that integrate the often competing demands of: ò regulatory requirements, ò commercial requirements, ò social/cultural needs, and ò technical issues. Properly implemented, this approach can result in: ò shortened approval timeframes, ò better project definition ò broad based community support, and ò favorably disposed government departments.

Prior to resource modelling, sample scale data is normally grouped into spatial domains that reflect zones of homogenous properties. These domains are usually based on a combination of grade and other variables that reflect, for example, geology and alteration, or variables known to correlate with properties of the samples that affect downstream processing. Domaining and wire-framing sample scale data is a time intensive task and it is difficult to track more than a few variables simultaneously while establishing domain boundaries. This is especially the case in operations with complex data, for example, a combination of multi-element assaying of total element concentrations, and/or phase specific assaying such as sulfide sulfur, carbonate carbon, cyanide available gold, and/or downhole geophysical measurements. To minimise unintentionally grouping samples of contrasting properties within the same domain, unsupervised statistical methods are available that can automatically identify samples atypical of the domain, both as univariate tests, and as tests that take correlation within the domain into account. Unsupervised methods in this context means methods of identifying atypical samples that require just the selection of the domain and input variables. Thresholds are derived robustly from the data itself, and the results are therefore repeatable and operator independent. Atypical samples may be thought of as outliers, ie, samples that are separated from the ‘majority’ of the data. If these atypical samples are themselves spatially associated, they may be allocated to an alternative existing domain or allocated to a new domain. Care should always be taken to ensure that identified outliers are due to meaningful causes and not due to data coding and storage errors, although the identification of the latter is still valuable. *This is an abstract only. ON milling plants, where a large number of slime samples are collected each day, considerable work is involved preparing them for the assayer. The usual practice (as the material usually passes a 150-mesh screen) is to place the sample on a 30-mesh screen an 1 brush it through on to a cloth below. The sample on the cloth is mixed and a portion taken out for the assayer. A simple apparatus that would rapidly disintegrate and prepare these slime samples for the assayer was needed. The manufacturers of assayers' supplies appear to have overlooked apparatus for this class of work. To overcome the tedious preparation of slime samples by the above method, the writer devised the apparatus shown in the accompanying drawing (Fig. 1). It will be seen that the apparatus is a combination of a modified household flour sifter and a riffle sampler.The apparatus is made up in two parts, the top half consisting of a screen box carrying the disintegrator, and the bottom half a, riffle divider, the joints between the two being a slip-in fit. A lid is provided for the screen box. The disintegrator consists of an open drum, to which are soldered three rows of spring steel fingers. Each row has a number of steel fingers which, on rotation, press against the semi-circular screen in the screen box, forcing the slime particles through.To operate the apparatus an 8-in. sample tin is placed under each spout of the divider. The sample of slime, which is about 2 lb. in weight and usually in lumps, is placed in the screen box, the cover replaced, and the drum rotated about half-a-dozen times by means of the handle.The disintegrated sample is divided by the rifle divider into two portions, which are found in the tins under the spouts of the apparatus. One of these samples is taken, mixed on a sheet, and sent to the assayer.

At any given time, the tidal force subjects massive regions to a spatially uniform load. The deformation of any large structure due to these forces is proportional to the elastic properties of the structure. In this aspect, the tidal force applies a load in a manner similar to that of a large-scale testing machine. Any anomalies in the measured tidal response must reflect alterations in the average elastic response of the massive structure. In the present work, tidal tilt measurements obtained in the wall of a large dam are used to infer changes in the response of the dam to applied loads. In particular, it is found that the dam response has changed by approximately 13 percent, on average, for two monitoring periods separated by 5 years. It is possible that these changes were produced by the different volumes of water in the dam for the monitoring periods. The tidal measurement technique can also be applied to monitor changes In the average structural response of large underground and surface masses relevant to coal and metal mines.

The article presents results of thermodynamic calculations and laboratory studies, focusing on the cobalt behaviour during oxidative smelting of copper-nickel mattes. The compositions of the studied solutions are related to the products formed during the second stage of the converting process of copper-nickel matte at the Nadezhdinsky Metallurgical Plant (NMP) of MMC Norilsk Nickel company. These sulfide products typically contain from 1.5 to 12 wt per cent of iron. The obtained experimental results and thermodynamic calculations indicate that adjusting the CaO ratio to increase the proportion of CaO or complete replacement of SiO2 with fluxes containing CaO leads to a significant increase in cobalt recovery rates in the matte phase (with an iron concentration of 2.5 wt per cent) raising them from 30 per cent to 45 per cent. Meanwhile, the recovery rates of copper and nickel remain constant.

The Iron Road Limited Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) area, located on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia, covers extensive Archaean iron formations that occur as coarse-grained magnetite bearing gneiss. The cumulative strike length, estimated from aeromagnetic data, is at least 95 km.The project is located in a grain growing area 185 km west of the existing iron ore and steel making operations of OneSteel at Whyalla. A narrow gauge railway built to transport agricultural products to the deep-water port of Port Lincoln, 175 km to the south, traverses the project area. A number of well-serviced rural townships are located nearby. Current activities include resource expansion drilling, extensive metallurgical test work, community consultation and a Prefeasibility Study (PFS) that commenced in April 2010.The PFS has encompassed the Central Eyre Iron Project, comprising the three significant iron occurrences (Warramboo, Kopi and Hambidge) and was completed in early 2011. Extensive test work programs and metallurgical modelling confirmed viable process options for the project, using simple off the shelf processing technology.Preconcentration by coarse cobbing yielded promising results, and is the key to reducing not only the capital expenditure but also the operating cost, in particular the power cost, which is the highest operating cost component of a magnetite benefi ciation plant. The ore is also amendable to high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) processing. This offers a potential for further reduction of the energy requirements.Test work also confirmed that a high grade blast furnace quality concentrate (~68 per cent Fe) can be produced at a relatively coarse grind (P80 106 µm).

This paper reviews the need for, and potential of, dry technologies in mineral processing, and considers the problems that will have to be solved for such technologies to be economic. The need for water in conventional mineral processing is reviewed, together with the advantages and disadvantages of operating wet and dry. A wide range of dry processing techniques have been developed in the past, some of which are in routine use either in mineral processing or in allied industries. However more information is needed to determine which of these is appropriate to replace conventional wet processing. It is concluded that a new paradigm is required for the design of processing flow sheets, which will need to extend to innovative ways of valuing particular process routes. Research is also required to develop current dry methods to increase throughput and overcome other disadvantages, and to develop new or refined dry separation methods, perhaps exploiting alternative mineral properties.

Drill and blast mining techniques are used to mine coal outburst prone and high gas content coals in Australia. As the risk of an outburst is increased in high gas content coal, it is considered that drill and blast is the safest way to mine coals that refuse to yield gas even after considerable gas drainage efforts. The availability of suitable explosives for drill and blast in Australia is dependent on the æBuxtonÆ tests. With the diminished coal operations in England, the type and supply of such explosives is tenuous, causing significant disruption to the production of coal in some mines. In an attempt to free up the availability of explosives a review of the methods used for the testing of coal mine explosives was undertaken to ascertain the scientific basis for these tests. It was hoped that this comparison would allow regulators to have the confidence in explosives that had been tested elsewhere. Although this was not achieved, it has spawned a major research project that aims to better understand the mechanisms involved so that either confirmation of the current testing regime can be achieved or more suitable and scientifically based tests can be adopted. This paper looks at the ongoing research program investigating the parameters that are involved with methane ignitions from explosives. By utilising high-speed data capture and processing the research project is trying to view an ignition as it happens to identify the mechanisms involved so that better explosives can be designed for the coal mining industry.

Filters are used in water treatment and hydrometallurgical process plants for objectives such as generating a dry spadable solid, pumpable high density slurry or high purity filtrate. The priority objective of every polishing filter, sometimes also termed clarifying filters is high purity filtrate and these are found in many diverse industries and even different applications within the same industry.To generate a high purity filtrate, process designers have the choice of many different polishing filter products, but in reality very few polishing filters are based on fundamentally different filtering concepts.This paper reviews the technology merits of well-known and the more recently developed polishing filter products and aims to assist metallurgists and engineers with the selection of an appropriate polishing filtration technology for pregnant liquor filtration and other process applications, plus a guide to best practice.CITATION:Shipard, S, 2013. Mechanical tunnelling and shaft sinking have set the standards regarding safety, profitability and environmental protection. Different machine types and working principles have been developed to suit the geological and hydrological requirements of tunnelling projects worldwide. Continuous activity in research and development leads to constant optimisation of tunnelling performance.

The lignite deposits of Southland and Central Otago are a potentially significant energy resource for New Zealand. Current estimates put the technically mineable lignite reserves at 5.3 billion tonnes, which is more than ten times the energy content of the Maui gas field. Thus, the strategic importance of the lignite as a basis for maintaining current levels of self-sufficiency in transport fuels, or as a possible feedstock for electricity generation, deserves full investigation. The full extent of the lignite deposits was only recently established as the result of a scout drilling programme undertaken between 1976 and 1979 by the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy, and from companion studies conducted by the New Zealand Geological Survey. These discoveries of large quantities of lignite coupled, at the time, with rising oil prices, raised the prospect of their development for production of transport fuels.

The double track railway tunnel, called the Second Shirasaka Tunnel is being constructed under the supervision of Japanese PTational Rail- ways (JNR) in the tertiary soft rock strata in order to speed up the railway transportation. This tunnel (L=1765m), located in a central part of Japan, is excavated by the machine (roadheader), while the adjoining First Shirasaka Tunnel (L=1296m), completed five years ago, was driven by the blasting, and NATM is adopted in both tunnels. The geological features in this region are Neogene Tertiary of Miocene sediments consisted of mudstone, the sandy mudstone and the alter- ation of these rocks, having a squeezing be- haviour. And the geological structure is as complicated as some anticline and syncline structures, large or small scale exist, and as a lot of faults are found. The machine excavation manner using road- header is adopted in this tunnel to minimize the effect of excavation because there is a possibility of the occurrence of landslide due to the tunnel excavation, and also because local inhabitants reside on the ground surface.

IN the course of his employment the Broken Hill Co. the writer has had occasion to use and instruct others in the use of the Shamrock rescue apparatus. This paper deals with the various types of apparatus tested. The common object of the various types of breathing apparatus is to enable the wearer to remain and work for varying periods of time in an atmosphere which is either deficient in oxygen or is poisonous that is, contains carbon monoxide or irritating and irrespirable vapours, such as the smoke from underground fires, sulphur dioxide or ammonia fumes. For any apparatus to be efficient as required in the above paragraph it must fulfil the following conditions;1. Air-tight as regards the passage of the air from the outside to the inside. In atmosphere containing carbon dioxide a slight leak would not render the apparatus useless; but where irritating vapours, such as the smoke from burning oregon and sulphides, are met with, even the slightest leak must be avoided.2. The oxygen supply must be ample, and so supplied that it is not checked by expiration.3. Expiration and inspiration must not be retarded.

The drying operation of materials from particulate solids, through slurries and suspensions, to continuous sheets represents an important part of several processes in the chemical and mineral industries. The increasing demand of high productivity at low cost and minimal environmental impact makes it complex to evaluate and choose the best available drying technology for each industrial application. The drying technologies are mainly characterised on the basis of how the wet product is related to the drying medium, namely: direct and indirect drying. In the direct drying method (convection drying), the product is brought into direct contact with the drying medium, which may be hot gas or air. Large quantities of gas are necessary for transfer of the required energy. A special case of the direct dryer is the fluid bed dryer, in which the product floats on a cushion of air or gas. The process air is supplied to the bed through a perforated distributor plate and flows through the bed of solids at a velocity sufficient to support the weight of particles. Very high heat and mass transfer values are obtained as a result of the intimate contact with the solids and the relative velocities between individual particles and the fluidising gas. In the indirect drying method (conduction or contact drying), the wet product is separated from the drying medium. The drying unit can consist of a rotor forming the indirect contact heating surface mounted in a stationary or rotating shell. The indirect method uses saturated or superheated steam resulting in low energy consumption and minimal environmental impact. In this paper, a review is given of the technologies available on the market based on different drying methods. The advantages and the disadvantages are summarised with respect to issues such as investment and operating cost, maintenance, product capacity, product handling and environmental impact.

The adsorption of gold cyanide by the weak base ion exchange resins, PAZ-4¦ and Duolite A-7C, the neutral polymeric adsorbent, Amberlite XAD7¦, and the strong base resins, PAZ-8~a and IRA-400 have been studied in both low and high salinity waters, and their performance compared with activated carbon. A systematic study has also been made of the effect of different ions (Na+, Cat+, Mgt+, Cl', SO4) ) on the gold adsorption capacity and kinetics of these resins. The results indicate that, contrary to popular belief, the ion exchange resin, can perform effectively in highly saline environments. The performance of the neutral polymeric adsorbent im- proves with increasing salinity but cannot match the performance of the ion-exchange resins.
