Gas drainage has been practiced for many years mainly for safety reasons in various countries in Europe, in the U.S.A., the U.K. and Japan. Legislation has been developed to control the production, transport- ation and utilisation of methane and associated gases. Gas drainage is now being carried out at some Australian Collieries, but as this is a new venture little specific legislation is available. This paper briefly describes the drainage methods and legislation applied overseas, gives a brief history of gas drainage in N.S.W. and indicates the deficiencies of the present legislation. It outlines the approach to new legislation which will deal comprehensively with gas drainage operations and utilisation in New South Wales.

The Imperial Smelting Furnace operated by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited at its Cockle Creek zinc-lead smelter was recently equipped with tuyeres angled at 25 degrees instead of the usual 10 degrees. This change was prompted by the results of model studies undertaken by tha Research Department of Imperial Smelting Processes Limited, at Avonmouth in the United Kingdom, and by the favourable results of operating trials on the Cockle Creek furnace using bent-tip tuyeres to simulate 25 degree inclination. The use of 25 degree angle tuyeres has made it possible to operate with lower zinc values in discard slag and has improved hearth stability over a wider range of sinter quality and composition.

In the retreatment of an old tailing dump containing five per cent of lead principally as lead sulphate, the lead sulphate was floated with liquid Aerofloat reagent after sulphidising with phosphorous pentasulphide in an acid circuit. A zinc middling product was removed by flotation before recovering the lead. Concentrate products were sundried in surface dams.INTRODUCTIONDuring the period between 1917 and 1928 the Junction North Broken Hill Mine N.L. deposited several tailing dumps on its leases, which were acquired by North Broken Hill Ltd.in 1931. One of these dumps lay alongside a main road close to a residential area. The high metal prices prevailing in the post-war years (1945 onwards) provided a strong incentive for retreating this dump and transferring it to a less objectionable site.SAMPLING AND TESTINGIn 1946 a sampling and testing campaign was instituted which culminated in 1949 in a decision being made to erect a tailing retreatment plant adjacent to the dump.The dump was sampled with a 3 in. post hole auger using extension lengths of -! in. pipe for drilling to 30 ft. The dump material was fine and moist and core recovery was excellent. Hole depths ranged from 14 ft. to 30 ft., with an average dump depth of 20 ft.Individual samples were prepared from successive 9 ft.lengths of core and each sample thus obtained was, submitted for sizing and assay.The sampling showed that the dump contained approximately 380,000 tons of fine tailing assaying:

Two blasthole density logging programmes have been conducted on the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine to evaluate the use of this type of logging as an aid to blast pattern design. The first programme also involved the setting up of a Density Test facility with which to calibrate the density probe. The programmes indicated that about 22-23 blastholes can be consistently logged per day at a cost of $1.30 per metre. Even though this is only half the rate required to log the average number of blastholes drilled daily on Mt Whaleback, testwork indicated that no significant loss of accuracy results if only half the holes in a pattern are logged. The major results of the programmes were: 1. The density range for black pyritic Shale is 2.2-2,9 g/cc. 2. The density range for soft to medium hard BIF is 2.1-3.0 g/cc. 3. The density range for hard BIF is 3.0-3.6 g/cc. 4. The front row blastholes show consistently lower densities than the main body holes due to blast damage. 5. A low density zone extending to a maximum depth of 6 m occurs at the top of most blastholes and results from blast damage from the bench above. A laboratory size solvent extraction apparatus has been constructed, which incorp- orates three stages of countercurrent extraction, followed by two stages of counter- current stripping. The model uses a gravity flow system from one stage to another and air lift pumps to recirculate organic and aqueous phases. A novel pump/mixer system is used to transfer solutions from the mixer compartments to the settler compartments. The model has proven valuable in the teaching of solvent extraction principles.

In recent times many groups have indicated that they would like ore reserve estimation to be numeric and objective. Whilst sampling, geological, mining and mathematical principles may be used to analyse the data, all ore reserve methods require the use of experience factors and as such are value j ddgment statements.

This paper discusses the methods utilised by the technical team to identify and quantify the SLC risk factors, the modifications to mine design and scheduling, and the changes to the planned risk management practices. The paper also describes the future work currently planned by the OZ Minerals technical team to quantify the various risk factors in terms of space, time and magnitude. This may better inform the future mining practices within not only the Carrapateena province but also the wider Gawler Craton.

It is a privilege for me to participate in this vitally important discussion of The Role of Governments in the Management of Resources. The distinction of my fellow participants is evidence that this event is a matter of extreme importance and attracts international attention. In the management of natural resources, government and private enterprise share awesome responsibilities for the economic well-being of nations. Mining and its relation to the prosperity of nations is almost as old as recorded history. Copper was being mined and extractive metal- lurgy practised at Timna in Israel's southern desert as far back as 4000 B.C., and the rich mines of Laurium not only saved the Greeks from Persian domination 2500 years ago, but also provided Athens with a monopoly of silver in the Mediterranean world. This bolstered the economic power of Athens and led to the golden age of Greek commerce and culture.

The Upper Robe (Robe Gorge) deposits occur in Kumina Creek and the Robe River, some 20-40 km upstream from mining operations at Pannawonica. The Gorge Deposits were rec- ognised, mapped and sampled in 1962-3 and re- examined in detail in 1971. Approximately 180 mineralized occurrences were mapped in 1971 on 1:4800 scale and 50 of these were remapped in detail at 1:1200 scale. Eighty cross sections were measured and sampled and 300 geological maps prepared. In addition 88 holes totalling 7388 feet were drilled in three occurrences considered to have the greatest potential. The Gorge Deposits occur in the Robe Pisolite unit which forms thin remnant crusts, bay fillings and occasional cut-off meanders along the edge of the present streams. Less than 50 of the deposits have tonnage potential of one million or more. Consequently exploit- ation of the Gorge reserves must be considered as a very uncertain, long range possibility because the deposits are small and scattered throughout the gorges in the area, thereby necessitating costly railroad spur lines to gain mining access. Natural Gas has been available in New Zealand for twenty years. During that time the gas share of the energy market has grown and now natural gas forms a significant part of New Zealand's energy scene, helping consumers to achieve a higher standard of living, and reducing dependence upon imported oil.Natural gas is now used for petrochemical manufacture and power generation in addition to direct supply to consumers.As concern for the environment continues to build, natural gas will have an increasingly important role to fill in these markets. This paper sets out the background to the development of natural gas in New Zealand and identifies the current markets. Accounts of their activities are hazy and debatable. A broad brush account is all that I can hope to accomplish under these circumstances. Lower transportation costs, improved handling and better utilization efficiency are some of the reasons that make low moisture coal product desirable. There has been considerable interest in the development of effective coal dewatering techniques to achieve this result. One avenue of considerable merit for enhancing dewatering processes is by modification of the surface chemistry of the coalwater slurry system by chemical means, resulting in better performance of existing equipment. This paper reports the results of an investigation of the utility of surface active agents in the enhancement of fine coal dewatering. A large variety of proprietary dewatering agents have been studied in relation to their efficiency in enhancing the dewatering of a number of Australian coals. Properties of particular coals that make them amenable to improved dewatering by particular chemical agents have been identified. Surface studies, including surface tension and zeta potential measurements as a function of surfactant concentration, as well as dewatering assessments, were used. Particular attention was paid to filtration, but the results could be applied to other dewatering systems.

The Ardlethan tin concentrator had dete riorated considerably in metallurgical per- formance, maintenance and plant availability. This problem was compounded by low tin prices and International Tin Council quotas. Mid- 1976 figures were: throughput - 1300 tonnes per day, availability 83% and metal recovery 537. Major problems existed throughout the circuit from crushing to tailings disposal and with morale, staffing, and housekeeping. With the lifting of the quotas in June 1976, management provided funds to implement a major rehabilitation programme and some fifteen major projects, at a cost of about $1.3 million have been completed to date. The change in performance has been dram- atic, and end of 1977 performance figures are: throughput - 1700 tonnes per day, availability 90% and metal recovery 65%.

Current operating practice in a plant commissioned some five years ago to treat ferritic zinc plant residue by the "Jarosite" process is described. Major problems overcome include obtaining reliable pH measurements at 100¦C, prevention of scale build up in spent electrolyte heaters, blinding of jarosite filter cloths and the deposition of gypsum in filter presses.

In 1969, Queensland Mines Limited obtained two large Prospecting Authorities in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. The Nabarlek uranium deposit containing some 12 000 t of U308 was discovered on one of these in June 1970. Mining and stockpiling of this deposit were completed in 1979 and processing to yellowcake, which commenced in June 1980, is expected to occupy an 8-10 year period. The continuation of exploration, essential for the company to become a longer- term producer, was inhibited in 1972 by a Federal Government "freeze" on exploration in Aboriginal Reserves in the Northern Territory. Subsequently, the procedure for explorers to gain access to exploration areas in Aboriginal land was radically changed by the proclamation of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. As a result of this Act and the associated administrative policies adopted by Governments, Queensland Mines Limited has not yet regained access to the exploration areas it formally held in the early 1970's.

Stuck drill rods (often referred to as bogged rods) in production ‘upholes’ are a common problem in the underground mining industry. Bogged and broken off drill rods have the potential to fall out of the hole without warning, posing a serious hazard to personnel and equipment below.Current industry practice to alleviate this hazard can be to either grout the hole in order to lock the drill rods in place, or to ‘plate over’ the hole with a rock bolt. Each of these operations seriously delays mine production as both require demobilisation of the production drill and mobilisation of alternative personnel and equipment to address the hazard. Both methods have been assessed for safety and efficiency and were found to be expensive, time consuming and in the case of plating over, ineffective.To address the safety and efficiency short-comings of the traditional practices, the long hole plug (LHP) has been developed to safely secure the lost rods in the hole. The LHP when struck by falling drill rods behaves similar to an expansion shell anchor transferring the axial forces from the falling drill rods horizontally into the rock mass. It is installed using standard production drills allowing work to safely continue with little interruption.Extensive testing has been carried out on the LHP in the laboratory and underground at the Rosebery mine on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia. Testing has included static pull testing, full scale drop testing and underground trials.The outcome of this work has proven the LHPs ability to add safety, volume and cost benefits to the Rosebery underground operation and it is currently in use at that site. It enables proven elimination of a common workplace hazard immediately, thus eliminating delay on the mine’s production cycle.CITATION:Thomas, S, Noonan, G and Limbert, M, 2017. Twelve years ago, Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division of Dresser Industries Inc. developed the 120H HELIMINER. This machine was the world's first fixed-drum continuous miner and soon became the standard among manufacturers of continuous miners throughout the mining machinery industry. This paper will first outline a brief history of continuous miner development, then discuss significant parameters which are essential to a successful continuous miner design, and finally describe a number of specific applications of Jeffrey continuous miners in a variety of materials, such as coal, potash, iron ore, and trona, around the world.

The problem of instantaneous outbursts remains unsolved after over a century of events and the investigation of the mechanism of the phenomenon and means of treating it. Outbursts have occurred of up to 5,000 tonnes with perhaps up to 500,000 m3 of accompanying gas, either methane (CH4) or carbon dioxide (C02) or mixtures. The low density of CH4 and the high density of CO2 give particular problems. Australia with both gases has experienced outbursts for 85 years with fatalities as recent as 1978. The Bulli Seam of the Illawarra area of the Sydney Basin is affected and outbursts with both CH4 and CO2 occur. The Northern and Central Bowen Basin also experiences outbursts with both gases. Proneness of affected mines is related to the high rank of the'coal and the proneness of the seams-is localised according to depth, gassiness, structure and development geometry. Proneness may be reduced by appropriate choice of mining methods. In addition to outbursting mines other mines have symptomatic phenomena. Traditional preventive methods have been used and control by induce- ment has been practised.
