Each of us has a vision of what the future mine will be and, generally, these visions have many similarities and some differences. One of the major discrepancies in visions of the future mine is not the ultimate goal but the path to achieve it. Many of the future concepts require a radical re-thinking of how things are and will be done yet. So how do we reach this visionary future mine? We need a path that satisfies both our future aspirations of a high tech gee-whiz operated from our iPads and the unfortunately mundane approach that says ‘we must know the method works, ie nothing new’.This paper explores how, within a research based organisation, we firstly set our ultimate goal and then divide the path into realistic technology development chunks that would appeal to mining companies to progress within their organisational constraints. Through examples, such as, automated LHDs, communications systems, surveying and localisation, rock cutting and geological sensing, we illustrate how this path will get us from the here and now to the out there future.This paper also demonstrates CSIRO’s short, medium and long-term research in many of the areas needed to create the Future Mine: mining methods, automation and remote control, mine communications, mapping and mission planning, geological sensing and, importantly, human-system integration, which examines how to effectively present data as information to operators and supervisors in an intelligent and useful manner.

Geoscientific information management enables the capture, management and delivery of the original geoscientific observations and measurements of the earth’s natural resources. However, original observations and measurements are worth nothing if the quality and integrity of the data can’t be guaranteed. Geoscientific information is one of the fundamental assets enabling miners to make confident and accurate business decisions, whether that is defining a resource model, performing reconciliation, delivering ore reserve reports or meeting environmental compliance requirements. Without access to reliable, validated or verified data it increases the risk of miners using incorrect information for reporting and compliance. Industry codes, such as JORC, or government regulations, such as environmental compliance requirements, must be adhered to and companies should be able to confidently report to these standards. Without having a robust information management framework in place, it becomes a challenge to make trustworthy decisions, report confidently and reduce the risk of non-compliance. As a key initiative, good data governance should form one part of a miner’s information management strategy. Within the mining industry it is common for companies to only consider technology tools as the key focus for compliance whereas a mature information management focus will additionally consider people and process. All three pillars are critical for a miner to have confidence in their data driven decisions. This paper discusses an industry framework for best-practice geoscientific information management based on the observations gathered from analysing data management practices within the mining industry. It focuses on how the three pillars of people, process and technology are crucial elements to improve operational decisions and ensure companies are compliant.

Sensor-based bulk ore sorting is a form of preconcentration that autonomously measures and physically separates discrete bulk ‘pods’ of run of mine (‘ROM’) or primary crushed material. This case study examines the results of a full scale bulk ore sorting trial undertaken at Cozamin mine in Zacatecas, Mexico in 2019. The bulk ore sorting plant comprised primarily of a mobile jaw crusher, fixed conveyor, MR analyser, and diverter gate. Results of the trial demonstrate that bulk ore sorting could deliver a net improvement in copper metal fed to the processing plant of 6-8 per cent within an equal gross tonnage of ore. Copper metal increases were the result of improvements in mining recovery, where valuable mineralisation is recovered from marginal or sub-grade material that would otherwise be discarded as waste or stockpiled as low-grade. The increase in mining recovery more than compensates for metal losses suffered in the bulk ore sorting plant.

The development and construction of the Grasberg block cave mine (GBC) is in progress, currently targeting initiation of caving in late 2018. Current production planning anticipates ramping up to full production of 130 000 to 160 000 t/d by 2027. As GBC approaches the production phase, there is a high priority on increasing the accuracy and level of detail in the production plan. The advance of the cave front directly controls the drawbell opening rate that is achievable. Therefore, an essential component of this plan is to produce an undercutting and drawbell sequence that honours the caving parameters that have been set for the mining blocks by the GBC production planning team.The PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine planning team and the Geovia caving business unit have developed a computational tool (Undercut Tool) capable of generating an undercutting sequence that follows a set of caving rules, such as advance rate per tunnel, maximum blasted area per period, control of lead-lag and shape of the undercut face. This tool also produces a drawbell sequence that honours the undercutting advance sequence, which is ultimately used to generate a life-of-mine production plan. This paper describes the inputs and outputs of the Undercut Tool that have been used to compute the long-term production plan for the GBC mine. It will further describe how the Undercut Tool takes into account operational constraints and geotechnical considerations that must be considered when developing a defendable production plan. Included is a discussion of the initial results of the planning outcomes from the tool; it will demonstrate how this work will support specific aspects of the plan such as the detailed undercut production drill and blast plans for the drill ring sequence, as well as how that plan will drive the drawpoint opening plan.CITATION:Villa, D, Brannon, C A, Dipas, C A and Vega, H A, 2017. In line with the 2015 Paris Agreement and corresponding climate disclosure requirements, many mining companies have publicly disclosed that they are developing and/or implementing ambitious decarbonisation strategies. Sometimes these strategies can be linked to the development of community programs and/or the creation of a positive legacy post-closure. Renewable power is key to most decarbonisation strategies – some mines will get this from external sources and others will establish on-site power generation and storage facilities. A range of options are available to develop renewable power generation (eg solar panel, wind farm, hydropower) and energy storage (eg battery, hydrogen, pumped hydroelectricity). Land access, impact assessments, planning and environmental approvals are required to establish new facilities. Host communities are more likely to be in favour of, or at least will accommodate, new power supply developments if these are planned with a benefit to the communities. Transitioning to renewables raises new challenges. Among these are high upfront costs and access to capital, energy demand variability, supply intermittency and variability, storage limitations, grid stability and reliability, transmission and distribution infrastructure constraints. Compounding these challenges are issues such as infrastructure resilience to extreme weather events (eg heat, wind), land use and access, lengthy permitting processes, community perceptions, skilled labour requirements, and meeting mine closure objectives. Renewable energy sources provide a more decentralised source of energy that reduces reliance on imported fuels, thereby increasing energy security and lowering production costs. On the contrary, implementing renewable energy could lead to potential negative impacts such as visual perception from the community, competitive land usage, electricity price raises due to upgrading infrastructure and the use of electricity storage capacities. As part of the definition of an environmental and social management plan, participative stakeholder engagement is required to identify benefits to the communities. For example, among the recognised benefits of developing solar panels (increase job opportunities, reduce soil erosion), various technologies have been experimented globally for the last ten years and are emerging due to their proven community benefits. Key findings to enhance those benefits can range from the development of innovative practices such as ‘agri-/aqua-voltaic’, ‘solar grazing’ to optimise land usage and stimulate the local economy (Table 1), to the implementation of technologies providing services to communities such as mobile water desalination plants or ‘smart grid’ systems to minimise energy clipping during peak-load of oversized renewable energy facilities (Table 2). While developing those synergies, careful management is required to avoid creating superfluous energy service needs from community programs. Energy sufficiency should remain a key principle according to the sufficiency, efficiency and renewable framework of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Darby and Fawcett (2018) define energy sufficiency has ‘a state in which people’s basic needs for energy services are met equitably and ecological limits are respected’. Sufficiency tackles the causes of the environmental impacts of human activities by avoiding the demand for energy and materials over the life cycle of buildings and goods. Efficiency tackles the symptoms of the environmental impacts of human activities by improving energy and material intensities. The third pillar, renewables, tackles the consequences of the environmental impacts of human activities by reducing the carbon intensity of energy supply (Cabeza et al, 2022). These can be considered to enhance stakeholders’ support for implementation of decarbonisation strategies.

Blasting is an essentially violent process aimed to disrupt and loosen rock for productive excavation and downstream processing. Dilution of the orebody to some extent is the inevitable result, particularly in narrow vein gold mines. A small change in gold recovery is usually a strong lever on revenue generation. As a result blast designs are carefully engineered to both minimise and control the direction of rock movement. Traditionally blast designs in gold mines have used the minimum powder factor that will still permit rock excavation. This now conflicts with the recent industry trend to optimise the total process flowsheet from the mine to the mill. Numerous mines have achieved success in reducing total mining cost by increasing powder factors. Not only is explosive energy cheaper than mechanical comminution energy requirements, the increased blasting effect may deliver benefits across all downstream processes of digging, hauling, crushing and milling. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston operation is the largest gold mine in Australia, located in the heart of the Kalgoorlie Goldfields. Blast dilution has been reduced at KCGM by managing location of blast boundaries and by firing along strike to choked faces. Significant economies of scale have resulted from application of a bulk mining methods. The bench height of 10 m is the largest in the Western Australian Goldfields, and is typically mined in a single pass with large face shovels. Recent increases in production rates in both the mine and mill has been partly attributed to a 30 per cent increase in powder factor. KCGM then examined the benefit of a further 18 per cent increase in powder factor to 1.0 kg/BCM. A concern though was the impact of very high powder factors resulting in excessive blast movement and subsequently ore dilution. This was the subject of a project conducted with Orica Explosives. OricaÆsDMC(Distinct Motion Code) blast model was applied to understand the effect of not just further increases in powder factor but also blast geometry and explosive type. The modeling work demonstrated that high powder factors may be applied with minimal increase in ore dilution provided the combination of blast geometry and explosive type is optimised. These results are currently being implemented to achieve further reductions in total mining costs without a significant impact on recovery.

Many mining companies routinely use benchmarking to review their operational activities and associated costs. The aim is to measure operational performance against industry norms, and identify areas where a company is performing better or worse than industry best practice. The goal is continuous improvement.In general, mine technical services, including mining geology activities, are not routinely benchmarked. There are exceptions, such as the cost of drilling per metre and the average discovery cost per unit of metal, but generally mining geology activities are only included indirectly in mining benchmarking studies.Aspects of benchmarking can play a critical role in assisting mining geologists to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the services they provide. Industry norms for many generic mining geology functions have not been developed and measured, and therefore it is impossible to use external benchmarking to assess performance against other mines. But when used in parallel with quantifying the value of mining geology functions and establishing strategic goals for the team, key components of benchmarking methodology can provide essential feedback on how a team is performing against these strategic goals.CITATION:Berry, M, 2014. In panel/block caving mines, large amounts of information are collected at the operations. This information includes grades and extracted tonnage, fragmentation, lithology, design of stopes and main infrastructure, geotechnical information, overbreak progress, seismicity, numerical modelling and many other mine variables. To improve the reliability of the production plan it is required to integrate the mine data into one platform. In this paper, the logic of a new technological platform is presented for analysis, modelling and design in panel/block caving mines. The platform includes an acquisition system for mine data and geotechnical information, a back-analysis module for calibrating statistical models and a module of visualisation of the results. The application and benefits of the platform is illustrated for mining induced seismic risk for panel/block caving mining operation. The need for formalised geotechnical reporting has not been fully explored at many operations. With the continuing need to provide safer and more efficient workplaces, the requirement for good geotechnical reporting systems (as with other reporting systems) has become of greater importance.Historically, the risk from rockfalls has been the largest cause of fatal injuries in the underground mining industry. The response of the ground to mining is generally poorly documented at many mines. At Olympic Dam, it was found that the existing corporate hazard and incident reporting (HIR) procedure did not record enough specifics about geotechnical issues. A separate and more specific geotechnical reporting process was set up to address this problem.This paper examines the role that geotechnical reporting plays at the WMC Resources Olympic Dam Mine; from reporting and rectifying day-to-day geotechnical issues that affect the operation to documenting and analysing longer term trends.

The introduction of digital technologies into the underground mining industry, in both coal and hard rock mining, has enabled many high bandwidth applications to be adopted by mines.Digital networks based on 802.11 b/g/n open Wi-Fi standards allow for many applications to be run over a single communication backbone. One important application has been tracking personnel and equipment via RFID tags. This tracking application has in turn formed the basis of a Proximity Detection System (PDS) or Collision Avoidance Systems (CAS). The paper discusses the growth in digital technology as the communication backbone in underground mines which has allowed the ‘convergence of technologies’ that has been occurring in the general business world to be available to underground mine operators. Then the paper will focus on the use of the technology in the increasingly important are of risk control around mobile plant underground. The specific use of digital devices for proximity detection, in both hard rock and coal mines, to provide a system that can deliver an additional level of control to the risks associated with people-vehicle interactions underground is discussed. The initial implementation of PDS in the hard rock mining environment is based on two zones of detection, required for large and relatively high speed vehicles. Information will include:•the principles of the underlying technology,•installation learnings and effectiveness, and•change management methodology and issues.The most recent development to integrate Mine Site Technologies (MST) PDS with Frederick Mining Controls’ HazardAvert® System to extend the overall Proximity System’s functionality in hard rock mines and for use in coal mines is overviewed.

This analysis attempts to reconcile existing ecological theories, rehabilitation planning goals and implementation constraints in the form of a rehabilitation paradigm that considers potential and pragmatic ecosystem transformation pathways. The framework prioritises multiple developmental scenarios for post-disturbed landscapes within a continuum of ecological outcomes. A feature of the framework is that ænovelÆ ecosystems and agro-ecosystems, having a range of commercial and societal values, are valid outcomes spanning the conceptual divide between the ecological functions of under-rehabilitated versus re-instated ænaturalÆ landscapes, especially in a changing environment. Landscape suitability analyses are considered to be fundamental to the incorporation of regional landscape and climate in the implementation of land rehabilitation and management strategies. Altogether, the paradigm could facilitate the identification of widely pertinent rehabilitation goals having direct implications at the regional scale of restoration ecology and acceptance of the need for ongoing commitment to the management of disturbed environments.CITATION:Audet, P, Doley, D and Mulligan, D R, 2012. A magnetometer survey 'was the Darkes Forest area between 1968. The instrument used was model MZ4 with sensitivity 9.4 conducted over part of 30th April and 3rd May, an ABEM torsion magnetometer gammas per scale division. The survey consisted of a closed magnetometer loop along lines cut for a previous magnetometer and seismic reflection survey by Wongela Geophysical in March, 1968. The magnetic results of the previous survey were not satisfactory in some areas and are presented as a comparison in instrumentation. Station separation in the present survey was 100 feet with tie-in readings at shot points of the previous survey (usually 1320 feet apart)

Comalco Limited has recently completed construction of a $50 million kaolin plant at the site of its bauxite mining and industrial minerals operations at Weipa. The plant will produce 100,000 tonnes per annum of coating grade kaolin for the paper industry.Comalco produced the first coating kaolin from the deposit in 1979 on a trial basis. Since then a variety of quality coating grades with specific particle ize distributions and brightness values have been prepared.Extensive drilling and bulk sampling of the deposit over eight years has shown that the orebody is large and of a high grade suitable for the production of premium quality coating kaolins.The processing plant technology was developed by Comalco in association with the European kaolin and equipment producer Amberger Kaolinwerke GmbH (AKW).The Weipa kaolin plant is the first of this size to be built in the Pacific Basin region and it will offer the region's paper-coating mills a stable and reliable source of high-quality kaolin, shipped from an established bulk loading port. The paper provides an overview of the development of the kaolin investment, the nature of the production process and details the project management procedure used for the design, construction and commissioning of the plant. Three areas of significant interest, the gas turbine fired pray dryer, the moving bridge shiploader and the use of aerobelt conveyors on the project are detailed.

Five Hypotheses are given for factors influencing long-run metals price forecasts. 1 . Geologists succeed when given the money. 2. Better understanding of a metals market depresses its price. 3 . Statistical techniques get forecasts wrong. 4. Long-run metals prices are related to crustal abundance. 5 . Economic cycles affect metals prices more than is realised. These are then framed within the transition between eras as influenced by apparent long waves in economic activity. Innovation surges during the transition between eras. The transition to the 5th Wave since the Indus- trial Revolution 200 years ago is now underway. Finally, price projec- tions are given both for the 5th Wave and 200 years from now on the assumption that a similar monetary measure to today will be then extant.

Australian coal mines have spent considerable capital on dragline improvements over the last two years. This has included ~$30 M on UDD conversions, >$20 M on new buckets, boom upgrades, electrical upgrades, etc. This is a natural part of the response of mining companies to technology and replacement programs. Capital expenditure is a normal part of the ongoing success of most companies. There is however, a tendency for some people to rely on the capital alone to provide the ongoing improvements in equipment productivity. Implementing new technology through capital expenditure is only part of the equation in continuous improvement. For 80 - 90 per cent of the year, the operator controls the productivity achieved by the dragline. Variation between operators is huge. The average standard deviation in productivity is 12 per cent and maintenance impact is over 40 per cent. Robbins 2003, states: Contrary to what we were taught in grade school, we werenÆt all created equal. Most of us are to the left of the median on some normally distributed ability curve. Further, he states: The issue is knowing how people differ in abilities and using that knowledge to increase the likelihood that an employee will perform his or her job well. There are two options for reducing variability between operators; improving operator ability and getting the machine to take over what the operator is doing (automation). Dragline automation will be discussed, however, this paper will focus more on the æhuman factorÆ and how to establish a dragline with minimum variability between operators.

The objective of the paper is to develop an understanding of the influence of caving on powered support rating by examining the geology and support performance at two sites which represent the current extremes in support rating, ie 6/240 Ton supports operating in the Hirst Seam at Solsgirth Colliery, Scotland, and 4/900 Tonne supports operating in the Bulli Seam, West Cliff Colliery, Australia. A conceptual model is introduced which considers the coal ahead of the face, the powered support, and the caved waste to be three yielding foundations which interact to control the subsidence of the roof strata. Different caving mechanisms are identified for the strata of the Hirst and Bulli Seams, ihese mechanisms being related to rock properties, ie to the palaeogeography and depositional conditions at each site, producing caved wastes with different yield characteristics. The results obtained for convergence and support reaction during production cycles at both sites are analysed to show the manner in which support reaction is developed, indicating the importance of high setting load densities in the Bulli Seam. Evaluation of the work done on the subsiding roof strata during typical production cycles by two of the yielding foundations, ie the powered support and the caved waste immediately behind the powered support, is used to further demonstrate the influence of caving mechanisms on support rating.

Two quantitative methods for Mineral Resource classification have been applied to a copper skarn deposit beneath a large open pit that is mining a world-class porphyry complex. A drill hole spacing study (DHSS) using the single block kriging method (SBK) and a conditional simulation method (CS) were applied to the skarn deposit and the results compared. Inputs to both processes included the proposed mining rate and stope designs to estimate the likelihood of achieving grade and metal production targets. Mineral Resource classification of the deposit considers the relative precision of tons, grade and metal predictions over quarterly and annual production periods. These relative precision estimates are calculated at 90 per cent confidence interval (CI). The SBK method represented the production period as a single large block. Kriging estimates were performed in the large block for various synthetic drill hole grids, and the estimation errors derived. The error was assumed to be normally distributed due to the large block size and quantity of samples, allowing CIs to be deduced. The CS method followed a conventional sequential Gaussian simulation workflow where grades were simulated with a 5 ft × 5 ft × 5 ft grid node spacing inside mineralisation domains. Each realisation was then averaged up to monthly production volumes represented by a combination of designed stopes, and the coefficient of variation (CV) for the averaged grade was calculated. CI on the relative precision of grade predictions were then deduced from the CVs. The two methods produced similar results; despite being calculated independently. CS results were used to report uncertainty in the proposed life-of-mine plan and highlight areas for additional drilling. SBK results were used as the basis for Mineral Resource classification as this method has been previously applied to the skarn deposit.

Process industry measurement systems, once installed, are often interpreted as static black boxes delivering correct values as long as not proven otherwise. After first implementation and set-up with a distinct sampling frequency, they often run ‘forever’ without checking if this frequency is still appropriate with respect to changed raw materials characteristics, different process conditions or changed customer specifications. Failure detection is based on operator experience and skills (often close to an art form) and/or from control measurements of reference samples. This may well be too late for many industrial process contexts. An appropriate sampling frequency is a critical success factor for valid monitoring and control.Based on the methodology of variographic analysis we here illustrate how to design/re-design/optimise an industrial measurement system in terms of sampling frequency, discretisation and accuracy based on customer specifications. We also show how variographics can be used to monitor for deviations. We use experience from process industry to show how these methods can be used not only for product characterisation, but also for monitoring input factors, process indicators and measurement of these. The information hidden in the vast amounts of data that is continuously created in modern process industries can be utilised to cut costs in the measurement activities and at the same time contribute to early error detection. We illustrate by case examples from production processes at a nickel refinery, supporting the Lean and Six Sigma methodology. This will provide a standard operating procedure for monitoring the stability of measurement systems, and provide a basis with which to discuss how a variographic approach can be integrated with the Lean and Six Sigma approach as an online tool to map, characterise and validate measurement systems and thus avoid more cumbersome measurement system analysis in full detail.CITATION:Thisted, E, Thisted, U, Bøckman, O and Esbensen, K H, 2017. Two characteristics of the modern mining industry are that there is a skill shortage and that young professional people rise rapidly into highly responsible supervisory positions. With this responsibility comes the burden of identifying and managing health and safety risks. Without the benefit of a comprehensive health and safety training program, these young professionals may be putting both themselves and those under their supervision at risk. The Moura Mine explosions and the asbestos health disaster should not be just artifacts of history, but highly valued lessons that impress the need for comprehensive health and safety risk management strategies on young professionals. From the perspective of the former secretary of the Committee to implement the findings of the Moura (Disaster) Inquiry and as the former coordinator of the Coal Workers Health Scheme, key issues in occupational health and safety management systems are explored.
