The theme of this conference is blasting productivity. This article only considers the technology aspect of this theme, and in particular, the collection and analysis of experimental data. In many cases, field trials are set up to collect data on variables such as fragmentation and vibration with the aim of comparing different explosive products and/or blast designs. An important aspect of such trials is the collection of sufficient data to draw sound conclusions. In this regard, there is no doubt that the scatter in real data is the root cause of all problems of obtaining misleading results due to an insufficient number of trials. This article shows that the typical one-off trial has a high probability of producing misleading information, which could be considered to be worse than having no information at all. Assuming that sufficient data has been collected, this article also highlights the methods that can be used to make the most of that data. These methods include the application of appropriate statistics that are dependent on the nature of the scatter in the data, and the use of some of the more recent filtering and spectral approaches that can be used to reduce the noise in measured blast signals and increase the resolution of their spectral characteristics.

The Warraua and Mount Poole Inliers form part of a discontinuous series of basement complexes in the northwestern corner of New South Wales. The Inliers comprise mainly clastic sediments of low metamorphic grade (Wonominta Beds) and minor sills, dykes and intrusives, particularly within the Mount Poole lnJier. The Warratta rnlier has received attention due to the occurrence of auriferous quartz-veins where reef mining activities havetaken place.The deformational history of the Warratta and Mount Poole Inljers is characterised by a continuous subhorizontally WSW-ENE directed compression. Deformation was associated with the development of NNW-trending and steeply west-dipping major faults, which bound or biscct the inliers. Chevron folds and a penetrative axial planar cleavage characterise the deformational architecture and document crustal shorterung of at least 40 per cent. In zones adjacent to the major faults and within pelitic and semi-pelitic uruts, a multiple deformational evolution becomes apparent, comprising two events (D1 and D2). Deformational structures considered significant in this study were the result of D1. Tight, northeast-vergent fold patterns FI' and associated axjal plane cleavage SI' and reverse dip-slip movements at major faults indicate early northeast-directed thrusting during D1. This was followed by dextral strike-slip deformation displayed by tight, recumbent folds, en-echelon fold patterns (F2'), a northeast trending crenulation cleavage (52'), and two sets of second order faults, the latter showing high angular relationship to the major faults. A final stage of the deformational history (D2) is represented by WSW-ENE trending kink folds (F2).Auriferous quartz veins, predominantly occurring within pelitic and semi-pelitic units, were generated syntectorucally during the early deformational event (D1) in the course of commencing development of cleavage (S2'). Vein textures point towards vein formation by repeated hydrauJjc fracturing and fracture healing (crack-seal process), and by simple accretionary vein growth. Folded pelite-dominated horizons, considered as low permeability units, are suggested preferential sites where migrating metamorphic Ouids pooled and were trapped, causing high fluid pressure.Hydraulic fracturing and vein precipitation was controlled by lithology and structural constraints such as cleavage.K-Ar dates of approximately 440 Ma (Benambran Orogeny) marking the peak of metamorphism, and coinciding with the development of cleavage S1', also indicate the time of auriferous quartz-vein formation. A period of deformation of at least 30 Ma is proposed for the development of cleavage S1', as constrained by K-Ar dating and the intrusion of a syntectonic granitoid, the Tibooburra Granodiorite.

A vision of what the future mine involves all aspects of mining, ie orebody access, ore stoping, material transport, processing and waste material disposal. This paper examines one aspect of the future mine: rock extraction, stoping, automated for remote operation, high productivity and low cost. Concepts for the future require a re-think of the mining process and ROES® re-examines how bulk stoping of ore can be undertaken and how this should be redesigned to accommodate the possibilities that exists with remote control and automated operations.ROES® is a new mining system for underground mines and quarries utilising a shaft located close to or within the stope for the ore breakage process. The system is designed to exclude personnel from contact with production drilling, explosive placement and detonation so all of these tasks are remotely controlled or automated. Survey of the shaft, stope back and broken rock within the stope will occur, following each blast, by remote control or automated techniques. The survey will include excavation geometry, rock fragmentation, geotechnical characterisation and estimation of ore grade. Blastholes will be surveyed before placement of explosives and, with the survey data, the optimal explosive placement and blast timing will be determined with the best available information.ROES® is designed for application in open stoping or sublevel caving in disseminated, geologically defined, thick tabular or narrow vein ore bodies. Technologies developed for ROES® will also have potential applications to caving operations, reducing the risk of frozen ore and poor fragmentation. In a typical sublevel open stope application, ROES® will reduce the stope associated development by half and will allow ore to be brought on-stream sooner and at lower cost. Other savings will flow with the centralisation of mining activities and operational data, reduction in mining fleet, reduction in ventilation requirements, improved occupational safety and reduced mine complexity.

"Ventilation risks in an underground mine have essentially remained the same for centuries, yet theevidence suggests that there are many coal mines that have failed to adequately control these risks.The conduit for the knowledge learned by previous generations exists in the mining legislation. In an ideal world, mines would not need legislation to tell them what to do; they would resolve the risks to an acceptable level so as to protect the safety of persons in the mines based on the acquired knowledge. There will be some who have been personally aff ected by a mining disaster but for the majority they will be remembered as a vague recollection of an event from long ago. The mining legislation is the repository for the knowledge and outcomes from inquiries of past disasters. The challenge for the current generation, and the generations to come is to appreciate the legislation that exists, so as to not ælearn the hard wayÆ. In reviewing most disasters there is comment or discussion on the adequacy of the legislation, which ultimately results in some amendment to the law. For each person, there is an increasing responsibility to ensure that the same mistakes are not repeated. Understanding the legislation, its history and its purpose is the fi rst step in ensuring thatventilation risks are eff ectively managed. Failing to do this will be disastrous. This paper discussesthe relevance, importance and potential pitfalls of coal mine ventilation regulation."

"The application of automated sampling techniques can help to provide a representative sample of process fluids and slurries that provide data for controlling process, custody transfer and quality assurance and quality control purposes.The automation of sampling provides a more consistent and reliable sampling process and eliminates many of the human-induced errors. Automated sampling can also provide a higher degree of safety in the plant/processing environment as well as better bottom-line results.Automated, fixed volume samplers can provide a very representative sample by integrating many small ‘grabs’ of sample from a process. Automated samplers can be controlled in a variety of ways to optimise the sampling process, including:cycle ratedwell timetotal volume.Properly selected and applied, an automated sampler can effectively isolate the operator from the process fluid during sampling and, to a great degree, during sample container collection.A variety of materials of construction, including seals, are available to handle demanding mining applications. The application of the hydraulic fracturing technique to the measurement of in situ rock stress from underground excavation is discussed; including relevant theoretical considerations, equipmenl details, experimental technique and analysis procedures. Examples of the application of the technique at three Australian coal and metalliferous mining operations are given. The results obtained from these applications are compared with corresponding results obtained from overcoring tests conducted in close proximity at each site. Generally good correspondence in a wide variety of rock types is indicated. Experience gained with hydraulic fracturing at several underground mining sites has indicated it to be a quick, cost effective means of gaining an understanding of the in situ stress field in sufficient detail for many mine planning functions.

The ore used in this test program was a composite sample from Waihi, New Zealand containing 2.7 g/t gold and 36 g/t silver. From the testwork it was found that a high concentration of sodium cyanide (0.1 per cent) was necessary to ensure a high recovery of both gold and silver. There appeared little chance for either differential leaching or adsorption of gold and silver. The addition of bentonite clay decreased the rates of gold and silver dissolution. The addition of 50 g/1 NaCI had little influence on the rate of silver extraction. The addition of 5 g/l carbon gave adsorptions of 70 per cent of the gold and 35 per cent of the silver, indicating the possible presence of base metal cyanides in solution. The addition of excess sodium sulphide only precipitated 70 per cent of the silver in solution, adding further evidence to the presence of base metal sulphides. The production of separate silver and gold products was not possible by either preferential leaching, preferential adsorption of gold on carbon or preferential precipitation of silver.

OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount Morgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operations the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be included, as it is necessary to understand the conditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout, the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan. In the oxidized zone the ore was of a friable nature, and in some cases rImning ground was encountered. In the lower levels the ground became heavier, and although the stopes were for the most part long, wide, high, and irregular, and not sectionalized, no difficulty was experienced in winning the ore, and no accident of a serious...

A reliable scale-up procedure for column flotation must address three important areas of column design, ie column geometry, sparging system and wash water distribution network. The column geometry is dictated by the maximum froth carrying capacity (which determines column diameter) and the bubble-particle attachment rate and particle retention time (which determines column length). The most important factor in the scale-up of an air sparging system is the ability to produce small bubbles in both laboratory and full-scale columns. Other factors, such as energy consumption and maintenance requirements, should also be considered in the scale-up of bubble generators. It is also important to design a wash water distribution system that can properly control the froth stability and maximise the column throughput. Based on these criteria, a successful scale-up example is given.

Favona is a blind low-sulfidation epithermal vein deposit in the Waihi Vein System approximately two kilometres east of the world class Martha Hill deposit that has produced nearly 6.8 M oz Au to date. The Favona epithermal system has surface expression in variously altered and mineralised hydrothermal eruption breccias forming a series of low hills that are windows through post mineral dacites and ignimbrites. The tip line of the Favona vein is about 50 û 100 m below surface with a steeply east dipping principal vein structure carrying numerous hanging wall splays in the upper flatter section and thickening down dip where the vein steepens. Host rocks comprise feldspar phyric andesite flows with minor pyroclastics. Although Favona has a strike length in excess of 1000 m and vein widths up to 25 m over a vertical range in excess of 400 m it was only recently discovered after nearly thirty years of exploration by various companies involved in the Martha Hill joint venture that operates the Martha Mine. Since discovery in 2001 a feasibility study based on 27.5 km of diamond drilling in 83 holes has been completed reporting a reserve of 1 Mt @ 10 g/t Au against a resource of 1.8 Mt @ 10.3 g/t Au. Exploration is continuing with a further 20.5km of diamond drilling completed to date on nearby prospects.

Stope filling practice on the Great Boulder Mine was described in -a paper published in Aus.I.M.M., Proceedings No. 137, in 1945. When the paper was presented the process had emerged from the experimental stage, most of the initial operating difficulties had been overcome, and it had been established that this method of filling was suitable for the working of ore bodies in the Kalgoorlie field: Since 1945, it has fulfilled its early promise, -and during 1947, the tonnage of fill placed was sufficient to cover current operating requirements as called for by the mine ore breaking programme. The object of this paper is to outline current operations. In so doing it will refer' to some ground covered by the previous paper, but will omit details of the initial experimental work. It will include, however, a description of further experimental work on the use of hydraulic filling for worked-out shrinkage stopes, arid will provide more accurate data on costs than were available previously.ESTIMATE OF TONNAGE OF FILL REQUIRED.Early in 1946, the mine ore reserves were analysed in order to estimate the relative tonnages to be mined per four-weekly period by shrinkage stope methods -and by cut and fill stope methods respectively. This analysis was extended beyond the blocks already prepared for stoping, and inclqded the majority of the major ore blocks in the mine ore reserves. It gave the following results:-For a mill tonnage of 28,000 tons per period, 6,933 tons were required from cut and fill stopes, and a possible future maximum programme of 35,000 tons per period would require...

A distinctive feature of the goldfields of Victoria was the extrac- tion of gold from deep leads, that is the buried river beds of Vic- toria's ancient rivers and streams. It is estimated that about 265,000 kg of gold was produced from Victoria's deep lead mines which comprises about 11.5% of Victoria's total production of gold (Bowen, 1974). The significance of deep lead mining for Victoria, however, went far beyond its economic contribution to Victoria. If Profes- sor Blainey is correct it was the frustrations of mining gold from deep alluvial leads in Ballarat during 1854 which precipitated the Eureka Stockade (Blainey, 1963, 46-52). This event resulted in the implementation of a fair mining administration and was an emphatic statement of the rise of democratic movements in Australia. Much of the technology and skill for mining deep leads had to be developed locally because at that time no other major gold- field elsewhere in Australia or the world had gold deposits with comparable problems. Deep lead mining in Victoria was there- fore largely a home grown industry and the equipment for that industry was often designed and produced in Victoria.

The main aim of the conference is to work towards improved useage of steelplant slags which have largely been considered waste mater- ials, This paper summarised investigations carried out on the suitability of air cooled blast furnace slag, blast furnace granulated slag and basic oxygen steelmaking slag as road base materials. All slag samples were obtained from the PortòKembla Works of Australian-Iron and Steel Pty Ltd. Since road making materials are increas- ingly being characterised by use of resilient moduli, the compressive strengths and resilient moduli were determined for road base of the following slags. 1 Air cooled crushed blast furnace slag 2 mixes of air cooled blast furnace slag, granulated slag, and lime 3 mixes of air cooled blast furnace slag,-granulated slag and basic oxygen steelmaking slag. Evaluation of a local dacite (dense medium grained igneous rock, classification rhyolite), generally considered an excellent road base course material, was carried out for use as a reference material.

Joint ventures exist as a means of sharing risks and obeying regulations. An unincorporated joint venture allows a company to take a share only of a project yet allows that company to treat such share as though it were an integral part of the company. The nature of the risks inherent in many ventures is described and comparisons made with alternative corporate vehicles. Different procedures for managing joint ventures are also reviewed and the types of problem encountered in establishing and operating joint ventures are discussed. The basic characteristics of successful joint ventures, in Australia, are listed and a conclusion reached that, despite its difficulties, the joint venture will continue to proliferate as a corporate vehicle for project development.

A venturi based multi-scrubber air cleaning system has been developed for dust control along a longwall face in coal mines. The system consists of a number of scrubbers. strategically placed along the wall face which deliver cleaned air at high exhaust velocity into the middle section of the longwall cross-section thus dividing it into two zones. The aim is to maintain the walkway on the powered support side as a zone of relatively clean air. Laboratory studies have shown that the scrubber's average efficiency is 90 per cent. Field trials in three longwall faces have shown that. under normal operating conditions. 40 to 50 per cent average protection efficiency can be achieved within 3 m to 4 m downstream of the scrubber. A three-dimensional finite element computational fluid dynamic model. FIDAP. was used to simulate the airflow patterns the dust concentration and the scrubber dust control technique at a typical longwall face. Results of simulations tally very well with the field results.

A critical appraisal of the wide variety of processes used in the pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals shows that there is a strong physico-chemical and, in particular thermodynamic, basis for the variety. Based on this, a simple classif- ication scheme has been developed which makes it possible to understand the methods for extracting individual metals and non-metals pyrometallurgically and to assess which are the more attractive routes. The analysis presented shows why there are essentially two broad routes for pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals; viz., the reduce- refine and the refine-reduce routes. Halides have the role in pyrometall- urgical processing of producing pure compounds for subsequent reduction. The criteria which determine the selection of reduction method for oxide raw materials and intermediate halides (e.g., use of carbon, hydrogen, a more reactive metal or electrowinning) are examined critically in the paper. The treatment of sulfide raw materials is considered also, particularly the criterion for smelting sulfides directly to the metal.

The Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) for the simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead was developed at Avonmouth from the 1930's with activity intensifying in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Present operations are based around the No.4 furnace which was built in 1967. Development during the 1980's has been driven by the need to sustain operations at low metals prices and has been aimed at reducing manning whilst increasing output. Although hit by several major plant disruptions, progress has been steady, culminating in a ú10 million capital programme in 1988?89 to upgrade the operation. The most important technical developments, reflecting the needs of the 1990's have, in the sintering area, included improvements to feed conditioning and sinter quality, a 20% uprate in production capacity by debottlenecking, and pilot work leading to the installation of a Boliden-Norzink mercury removal plant. In the smelting area the ISP furnace has been rebuilt, with a redesigned bottom section to eliminate earlier operating sensitivities, and to achieve higher blowing capability, and at the zinc refinery the columns have been rearranged for more flexible operation and higher capacity.

"In the past decade, increased processing capacity combined with precision robotics in high resolution spectrometers has resulted in a new generation of high-speed hyperspectral core logging systems. The application of these multisensor automated platforms provides a key advancement in the characterisation of metal resources. The development of this technology has allowed for comprehensive, drill core-based, mine-scale rock mass characterisation studies. Here we propose a new method for the extraction of parameters that seek to more accurately quantify ground conditions, including quantified rock mass rating (RMR) and the Rock Tunnelling Quality (Q) Index. Data inputs include rock quality designation (RQD), number of joint sets, joint roughness, joint alteration and joint spacing. Geologists and geotechnical engineers have historically collected these inputs by manually logging drill core. With automated core scanning technologies, these parameters can be estimated from the acquired image data and used to objectively calculate RMR and Q-index values for oriented core.Corescan is an automated hyperspectral core scanner that uses a 3D laser profiling system to measure the height of the surface of drill core. This technology allows for rapid core analysis to produce detailed fracture and rock condition data. Through an integrated geometallurgical approach, the proposed methodology will test the accuracy of joint measurement using the height profile Corescan data from oriented drill core. This will be combined with joint roughness and alteration mineralogy measured from the hyperspectral images to calculate the RMR and the Q-index continuously downhole. The values obtained can then be compared to the traditional, manual geotechnical log data. If the precision is sufficient, these techniques can then be applied site-wide to automate the collection and modelling of key ground condition classification indices across an entire deposit. Compared to the laborious manual geotechnical logging procedures that currently form the industry standard, utilisation of core laser profile data and high resolution red-green-blue (RGB) images provide an opportunity to collect large volumes of consistent geotechnical data, which can increase the efficiency and accuracy of deposit scale geotechnical models.CITATION:Harraden, C L, Berry, R and Lett, J, 2016. This paper presents the findings and analysis of the investigation of effectiveness of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) as a gas management tool in underground coalmines. The project involves spraying TSL on the area surrounding gas drainage holes whereby the TSL acts as a thin membrane decreasing the permeability of the coal. This restricts air migrating through the coal seam and diluting gas from the drainage holes. There are a number of potential benefits from this technique but key points are that gas drainage holes produce gas with higher concentrations of methane. The design and execution of a field trial to investigate the effectiveness of a TSL on purity of in situ methane from gas drainage holes is presented in this report. For eight drainage holes, the results show an average increase in methane purity by 9.14 per cent and a reduction in air contamination by an average 7.93 per cent. Overall methane flow rate decreased by 27.6 L/s; however, flow rates were unreliable due to poor measuring equipment. For most holes, methane purity was not changed significantly; however, certain boreholes were responsible for most of the variation in methane purity. The boreholes showing a dramatic improvement in methane purity were likely those with intersecting cleats covered by the TSL. If the TSL was sprayed over more area, specifically in areas where the cleats are intersecting with holes, it is likely that purity of methane in the drainage holes will increase.CITATION:Tenney, J M, Chalmers, D and Li, Z, 2015. The quality of a photointerpreter's anno- tation of an image may be displayed by writing maps in which the pixels are shaded according to the number of times a pixel was seen to be on a feature. The map of grey tones is more valuable, if, for each grey level, a measure of quality is determined, which is the probability that a feature exists in a pixel of a given grey tone. From repeated annotations (at least four) of the same image by a single observer, it is possible to formulate a perception model which describes stochastic processes in the observer. From that model, it is possible to assign estimates of data quality for each observer to each grey tone. For two observers on the same scene, the 'mean' method of quantifying the grey levels is to assign a value equal to the mean of the ii,:lities for each of the two observers separately. For this example, the grey tones arr thus quantified at probability levels of 0.70, 0.80, 0.90 and 0.95.
