In-situ recovery (ISR) is accepted and applied across many geographies, and approximately 50% of the world’s uranium is currently extracted by using an ISR method (World Nuclear Association, 2014). The low environmental impact, the elimination of risk for mine workers and the fact that all of the lowest-cost producers of uranium use an ISR approach should raise interest from traditional miners (IAEA, 2014). However, the broader application of ISR to other commodities and mineral systems remains limited. A number of demonstration (experimental) copper projects have been undertaken (Sinclair and Thompson, 2015) with a few copper projects in Arizona being close to demonstration (Florence, 2018 and Gunnison, 2018). Evidence of very few economically operating ISR copper projects can be found (for example, the Russian, Uralgidromed OAO, built by the Russian Copper Company in 2005 and operated as an ISR facility from the Gumeshevskoye deposit (Russia Mining, 2018). A number of gold deposits, particularly paleochannel deposits, have also been considered for ISR, but, to the best of our knowledge, only limited demonstration and no commercial operations have been established, yet (Kuhar et al, 2018 and references therein).CITATION:Robinson, D J and Kuhar, L L, 2018. Folklore suggests that oxidation is detrimental to sulfide mineral flotation, and in many instances is the reason given for values reporting in the tailing. However, while a considerable body of work examining galena oxidation is available in the literature there are very few studies that investigate the consequences of galena oxidation on its subsequent flotation in base metal sulfide ores. This work clearly demonstrates that pyrite forms a galvanic couple with galena, due to the large difference in their rest potentials, and results in accelerated oxidation of galena, particularly as the pyrite content of the ore is increased. The most obvious effect of the galvanic oxidation of galena by pyrite is the release into the system of galena oxidation products, providing an ample supply of lead ions available to activate gangue minerals, most notably of which in lead/zinc ores is sphalerite. The inadvertent activation of sphalerite by lead ions inevitably leads to the recovery of liberated sphalerite into the lead concentrate, and as a consequence a reduction in the lead concentrate grade. That is, a loss of selectivity for galena against sphalerite. If galena oxidation is excessive not only is there a considerable loss in lead concentrate grade, but also a marked decreased in lead recovery as the flotation rates of the gangue minerals increase, until they rival that of galena.

The in situ rock mass rating system û IRMR - leading to the mining rock mass rating system - MRMR - for jointed rock masses has been used (and abused) in mining operations around the world for the past 27 years. Despite the recent development of elaborate design procedures and computer-aided design packages, MRMR remains one of the most versatile and practical mine design systems available. It is important to realise that the rock mass classification system should not be replaced but rather complemented by more sophisticated and detailed design procedures. The classification system is not only the æcrudeÆ method used for initial assessment (as described in some geotechnical literature) but also in many respects a very effective and practical engineering tool. MRMR could, and should be used during the entire stage of mine life as an integral part of the design process. The objectives of this paper are to illustrate using practical case histories from the past decade, some of the pitfalls of the MRMR classification system, to clarify certain misconceptions in its application and update its mining application.

To our geologists at Eldorado Gold Corporation, the release of the gold assays on a new ore zone causes a flurry of excitement. But to our metallurgists, that news is often greeted with the question ‘What’s the sulfur grade’? In our company, we operate and manage projects whose end-product will either be auriferous sulfide flotation concentrate or gold doré. Almost all of the steps in the ore processing are related to sulfur (in this paper specifically sulfide sulfur). So why do we geologists wait until late in a project or into production before collecting sulfur data for mine planning and ore control purposes?Gold deposits associated with sulfides commonly use a metallurgical process that begins with a flotation step to recover gold into a smaller mass known as flotation concentrate. Often, this step solely targets the sulfide minerals with gold only coming along for the ‘ride’. As a result, the gold grade in the concentrate is primarily influenced by the ratio of gold to sulfur in the feed. Should this concentrate require a refractory process downstream (eg pressure oxidation), knowing sulfur grade is critical as sulfur controls heat balance in the process. Regardless, we need sulfur models to be as robust as gold models, and created much earlier in the project evaluation process.Sulfur models require quality data collected at the same density as gold samples. Analytical methods must match expected grade ranges and quality assurance quality control (QA/QC) protocols and must be of the same integrity as in use for gold. Sulfur models will then be created by their own data analyses, interpolation protocols and validation. Furthermore, ore control systems should be designed for regular sulfur monitoring to ensure and enhance downstream value. Given time it should become habitual for geologists to likewise ask, ‘And what’s the sulfur grade’, or more specifically, ‘What’s the gold to sulfur ratio’?CITATION:Juras, S, 2017. The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. BHP Billiton Olympic Dam produces copper cathode, uranium oxide concentrate and refined gold and silver. The operation is comprised of an underground Mine and Processing Plant and is located 560 km north of Adelaide. Water for the operation is sourced from two wellfields located 120 and 200 km from the operation in the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) at a rate of approximately 36 ML/d. Regulatory drawdown limits were established to protect regional GAB springs and are monitored at compliance bores. Drawdown was predicted in the æOlympic Dam Environmental Impact StudyÆ (Kinhill, 1997); however, pumping at higher volumes may have the potential for increased drawdown resulting in a trend towards the compliance limits. In recent years increased usage of water in the Concentrator and Hydromet sections of the Processing Plant has caused excess process water reporting to the Tailings Retention System (TRS). This has resulted in excessive amounts of liquor ponding on the tailings cells with a potential impact being contamination due to seepage of liquor to groundwater. Effective management of water by the operation is necessary to both reduce GAB drawdown and reduce the amount of liquor on the tailings cells. A site working-group has been established to investigate and pursue opportunities to improve the water use efficiency of the operation. This paper will highlight the issue of water management at Olympic Dam and discuss the various options currently being investigated to improve management of this important resource.

The company requires representation that demonstrates an understanding and commitment to its operations and people, the safety and health of the community and environment, and most importantly, represents the decision makers. Stakeholders need to believe that the engagement process is genuine and that the company representatives are aligned towards targeted outcomes that will benefit all stakeholders in some way.Among others, stakeholders include shareholders, staff, families, community, service and supply providers, regulators, land managers and the political/financial framework. Depending upon the mineral product, stakeholders may include ports, international offtake clients and those along the route. New stakeholders continually evolve during mine life, and the engagement process requires an investor–community–public relations (IR/CR/PR) team to anticipate change and actively scan perception and chatter.Successful communication is more than delivering a message; it is about engaging stakeholders and confirming the feedback loop to ensure the correct message is communicated and the relationship is strengthened.The nature of the mining company’s branding and the public’s perception of company intentions will dictate whether there is willingness to allow the company to follow its desired path. Many open pit mining operations seek to control blasting-related movement of ore and waste to minimise loss and dilution. Tracking the movement of ore boundaries can result in the maximisation of ore recovery and minimisation of waste sent to the mill, thereby optimising the economic performance of the operation.A novel solution for tracking the ore–waste boundary location before and after a blast uses subsurface markers placed along the boundary with all measurements and scans conducted remotely from the blast block. Upon system activation, user-operated equipment on the surface determines the three-dimensional (3D) location of the subsurface markers.The patented system concept combines two electromagnetic mechanisms, magnetic positioning and radio frequency through-rock communications to enable remote battery-powered markers, buried within the rock to be accurately located in 3D space.Field trials at a quarry have demonstrated the system can comfortably handle over 100 subsurface markers with a complete scan, including set-up, taking less than an hour. The 5.6 km Canning Tunnel was constructed to improve water supply from Canning Dam to the Perth metropolitan area. The site area is in the Darling Range which is essentially a laterite-capped plateau-remnant underlain by Archaean granitic rocks, intruded by dolerite. Two arrangements were available. After geotechnical investigations which included geological mapping, seismic refraction geo- physics, diamond drilling and mechanical rock testing, a single tunnel was selected in pre- ference to two short tunnels and a connecting pipeline. The tunnel is hydraulically equivalent to a fully lined tunnel 1.83 m in diameter and 5 580 m long. The alignment diverged from a straight line so that the initial upstream section was almost normal to the contours which allowed for minimal support requirements in a weathered zone. Although steel and con- crete lining was needed at both ends, the main section of the tunnel was unlined except for a concrete floor. A sand and rock trap with a capacity of 46 m3 was constructed near the outlet portal to collect debris and sand down to a size of about 2 mm. Portal excavations were in highly to completely weathered rock which extended 56 m into the tunnel at the upstream end, and 18 m at the downstream end. Exploration for economic nickel sulphide mineralisation has often been directed by rationalisations based on poorly understood genetic models. Among those that have enjoyed popularity over the past decade are the "layered gabbro" model and the "basal ultramafic" or Kambalda model. The new discoveries in the Mt Keith-Agnew area could well become a model for future nickel search. Exploration based on even the crudest state- ment of the Kambalda model - prospect the basal contact of Archaean ultramafic complexes for gossanous expressions of sulphide mineralisa- tion - has met with remarkable success. Refine- ments to this model, besides satisfying the geology of any particular deposit, have the major virtue that many of the genetic options - magmatic segregation, hydrothermal transport, sulphurisation, replacement sedimentary, structural control, etc. - are still open. Recent descriptions of highly magnesian silicate melts associated with the ultramafic rocks, do however, place some constraints on the formation of these deposits. Further evidence, from experimental studies on sulphide-silicate and sulphide-oxide phase relationships, and nickel-iron exchange in pyrrhotite, is taken with descriptions of sulphide nickel occurrences in Western Australia to examine genetic models for existing ore bodies.

In a ætypicalÆ gold deposit each tonne of ore will contain tens of millions of very fine gold particles, whereas; at Bendigo the majority of gold in each tonne of ore is present in just five to 15 very coarse gold particles, a distribution more akin to diamond deposits. At Bendigo the minimum sample size required for good assay repeatability is estimated at 4.5 t for each assay. Drill core samples are several orders of magnitude too small to generate representative assays.The drilling data are characterised by a nugget effect approaching 90 per cent, a very skewed distribution and, on average, under-report in situ grade by 50 per cent to 75 per cent. Since 2002 Bendigo Mining NL has completed 47 000 m of diamond drilling, 1200 m of on reef development, collected and processed 100 bulk samples (150 t each), 800 mini bulk samples (50 kg each) and processed in excess of 25 000 t of ore through a pilot plant. The results of this work have provided the information required to develop and verify a robust grade estimation procedure. No standard geostatistical manipulation of the drilling assay data can generate an accurate grade estimate as the samples and associated assays are not representative of the ore being sampled. The recognition of this fact was critical as a radical transformation of the raw drill assay data was required to develop a workable methodology for grade estimation in such a high nugget environment. The aim of the transformation was to reduce the nugget effect and high variance and so approach a lognormal assay distribution. Ideally the average drill grade would approximate actual in situ grade and the assay distribution would reflect actual grade distribution within the reefs. Following the data transformation simple block modeling within the defined resources allows grade estimates to be made that can be used in the estimation of Indicated Resources and hence Probable Reserves. The grade estimates have been checked by extensive bulk sampling and processing of 25 000 t of ore (three per cent of total resource) through a pilot plant with planned full scale mining to provide the ultimate verification.

The rapid industrialisation in China has consumed large amounts of various industrial raw materials, which has left behind large quantities of industrial solid wastes produced from the processes of mining, mineral processing and smelting. The storage of huge quantities of industrial solid wastes is an obvious risk to the environment and human well-being. As the first step to fully appreciate the scale of this risk, it is necessary to carry out research for developing a pollution source environmental risk assessment system (PSERAS), especially for the typical staple industrial solid waste (TSISW). This paper aims to discuss the frame of the PSERAS for TSISW for large scale production. This system consists of two aspects: predicted factors and accidental ones, which involve physical, chemical and biological risk assessments, on-site and during transportation process. Two analysis methods, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy logic assessment (FLA) were used to handle the complexity of environment and non-quantitative data. The risk assessment system for such a complex objective is difficult and the assessment of relative factors is problematic through the usual quantitative analysis. With the proposed PSERAS, it is possible to define the risk class of pollution sources. Furthermore, the risk assessment results will be helpful to the decision-maker, especially when facing unknown risks in the environmental management of industrial solid wastes. We are currently witnessing large fluctuations in the relative price of ironmaking raw materials brought on by changes in the dynamics of supply and demand, market conditions, environmental regulations and technical factors affecting the iron and steelmaking process. From a customer perspective, it is the behaviour of iron ores in downstream processing that give them their value; their impact on the sintering or pelletising process and subsequently blast furnace ironmaking. It is therefore important to consider this value when developing projects, making mine planning/cut-off grade decisions and in setting price differentials for differing quality.This paper describes the use of the Marx value-in-use model to quantify the downstream value of lump iron ores. The Marx model consists of heat and mass balance modules for sintering and pelletising and a rigorous two-stage heat and mass balance model of blast furnace ironmaking. Mass balance and cost models are applied for steelmaking, casting and rolling. The use of a heat and mass balance allows accurate comparison of the impact of raw material properties on blast furnace operation. The impact of minor elements, such as alumina, silica and phosphorus, and metallurgical properties on ironmaking is described, and examples are given for the calculation of a lump premium.CITATION:Honeyands, T and Jelenich, L, 2015. Optimising pit slope stability and reducing strip ratio of a mining operation are two key tasks in geotechnical engineering. With a growing demand for minerals and an increasing cost associated with extraction, companies are constantly re-evaluating the viability of mineral deposits and challenging their geological understanding. Within Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO), the Structural Geology (SG) team investigate and collect critical data, such as point based orientations, mapping and geological inferences from adjacent pits to remodel deposits where previous interpretations have failed to account for structurally controlled slope failures. This work outlines the key methods utilised by the Structural Geology team which form the foundations of informed orebody knowledge and subsequent geotechnical design recommendations. This publication utilises the results from a recent analysis to highlight the benefits of this methodology and how it has impacted the economics of an operation through optimisation of a pit wall ‘cutback’ and crest relocation.

An investigation was carried out at Diavik Diamond Mines Inc (DDMI) to identify and quantify the mechanisms through which ammonium nitrate (AN) was entering the mine discharge water. The goal was to develop and complete an investigation of the potential AN loss mechanisms in order to assess their contribution to ammonia in the mine water system. The initial phase of the project involved the collection and analysis of blasting and water quality data that were used to determine the mechanisms by which the ammonia enters the mine water system and to establish a baseline data set for comparison with results from future trials designed to reduce AN loss. Three potential options for reducing AN loss were identified through the first phase of the project. The second phase of the project involved conducting a series of monitored trials with changes made to the drilling and blasting process. The results of these trials were compared to the baseline data set to determine if the changes introduced for the trials had reduced AN losses while producing satisfactory blast results. This paper describes the process for the collection of the baseline data, provides an analysis of the resulting data, discusses the changes made to blasting operations in order to minimise AN loss and describes the results observed subsequent to these changes.

A trend towards mining more complex and economically marginal orebodies, often combined with increasingly tight product specifications, increases the number of variables which need to be considered in production scheduling. Linear programming incorporating integer constraints can be used to create production schedules which are practical as well as mathematically optimum. Factors which can be taken into account include variability in product stockpiles, targets for head or product grades, production of different material types, production from different areas, production targets for loaders, and dependencies between mining blocks. For each schedule an appropriate objective for optimisation must be chosen. Examples of objectives are: to minimise or maximise grade variation; to minimise waste movement; and to minimise movement by front end loaders. A staged approach to the implementation of computer systems based on linear programming optimisation is Proposed.

Due to ongoing demand and increasing depletion of high-grade iron ore resources from large deposits, Australian iron ore producers are developing smaller size deposits to maintain current export levels. The iron grade, mineralogy, chemical and physical characteristics of iron ore fines being mined from different deposits vary considerably. It is therefore imperative to develop long-term strategies to maintain the quality and consistency of iron ore fines while moving to a larger diversity of smaller deposits. Blending is a common practice in sinter plants as it is almost impossible to produce a high performance sinter mixture displaying the required characteristics from one single ore. Blending is also one of the most effective options being used by iron ore producers to ensure the long-term stability of their products while increasing production. When designing a blend, the blend components are selected to support each other to achieve the required overall balanced metallurgical performance of the final product at a relatively low cost. To do so, a fundamental understanding of the key characteristics of iron ore fines and their potential impacts on the iron ore sintering process and sinter quality are required. In this paper, the sintering process and sinter structure have been analysed and the key factors affecting the sintering performance of iron ore fines, including productivity and quality, identified. Under fixed sintering conditions, the granulation efficiency, nuclei stability and the volume and properties of the primary sinter melt are believed to have important impacts on both sintering productivity and sinter quality. Discussion is then focused on the effects of ore chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics on the key factors identified and in turn the consequences for sintering productivity and sinter quality.

The paper focuses on how rock bolts are loaded in different rock masses, as well as in pullout tests. Three analytical models for rock bolts are presented in brief, one for bolts in continuously deformed rock masses, one for bolts in blocky rock masses, and one for bolts in pullout tests. The bolt models are used to interpret measurement data for rock bolts from three sources and to help specify the modes of axial load in the rock bolts. It is found that in continuously deformed rock formations fully coupled rock bolts have only one axial stress peak. The position of the axial stress peak moves towards the far end of the bolts with increasing rock deformation. In blocky rock masses several axial stress peaks may appear in the rock bolt. The position of this kind of axial stress peak does not change during the entire loading process. For rock bolts in pullout tests, decoupling of the interface always occurs first at the loading point. The decoupling front moves towards the far end of the bolt with an increase in the applied pull load.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Misima gold mine, located on Misima Island within the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea, was operated by Misima Mines Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Placer Dome Asia Pacific Limited (Placer), between 1988 and 2004. During this period, the mine produced 3.7 Moz of gold and 22.2 Moz of silver. In June 2012, the Special Mining Lease for the property was surrendered and incorporated into an Exploration Licence (EL). WCB Resources Ltd (WCB) entered into an exploration farm-in agreement with Pan Pacific Copper covering this EL.In June 2013, WCB published a new mineral resource of the Umuna deposit at Misima. All the drill hole data used for estimation was historical data collected by the previous owners of the Misima mine between 1977 and 2001. No new drilling was carried out by WCB. Confidence that the data could be relied on was provided by detailed interrogation of the existing data, reconciliation of the new resource model against production data and significant input from individuals who had previously been involved with the data collection, resource estimation and production activities of the Misima mine during its operation.This extended abstract will consider the challenges associated with locating, retrieving and validating historical data to use as inputs to produce an updated Mineral Resource estimate and comment on the material value of appropriate data storage, documentation and record keeping through the life of a project. It will also comment on the value of WCB obtaining access to the intellectual knowledge of many professionals that were former employees of Placer.
