High silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3), and phosphorus (P) contents in iron ore adversely affect the quality of iron products. The removal of those impurities from iron ore is an essential point in further iron ore processing. In this paper, the removal of P, SiO2 and Al2O3 impurities from iron ore by alkaline drying followed by reverse cationic flotation is discussed. The reverse cationic flotation experiments are performed using the iron ore samples without and with alkaline drying pretreatment. All other flotation conditions except pulp pH (4–12) and particle size distributions (-45 to -250 μm) are held constant. A typical collector and frother, such as dodecylamine acetate (DAA) and methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC), are used in the flotation experiments. Alkaline treatment is conducted before flotation using sodium hydroxide at fixed conditions. The impact of alkaline drying on the performance of iron ore flotation is evaluated based on the removal rates of P and SiO2 + Al2O3, iron grade, and iron recovery compared with the iron ore flotation without alkaline drying (direct flotation). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicates hematite and goethite are the main minerals in the iron ore, which assays 62.8 mass per cent Fe, 0.232 mass per cent P, 7.1 mass per cent SiO2 + Al2O3 (total) determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). Results indicate that a combined approach is more effective for removing P and SiO2 + Al2O3 impurities from iron ore than the direct processing technique because the maximum removal rates of P and SiO2 + Al2O3 are 48.2 per cent and 66.5 per cent from the alkaline dried iron ore when 8.4 per cent and 13.1 per cent from the non-alkaline dried iron ore.

A strategic mine plan is a fundamental part of any mining operation. It must provide a realistic and operative extraction and processing schedule, and yield the highest value for the business. For open pit mines, the problem can be modelled as a set of blocks representing the deposit, for each of which we need to decide if it is going to be mined, if so, when and where it will be sent (process, stock or dump).This problem can be proven to be of NP-Hard complexity. The traditional approach used by mining engineers to tackle this complexity is to separate the problem into more tractable components, solving each separately. The first step is to use the Lerchs-Grossman (LG) algorithm to obtain the final pit limit, as well as a set of optimised pit shells (nested pits), using different input prices. Then, using this input, operational phases are designed. Third, the set of phases can be used as an input for a phase-bench style optimisation, usually using a mathematical programming-based algorithm.There are, however, several problems with this approach. First, dividing the problem into simpler parts has the consequence that any compromises made at early stages limit the potential value left for the following steps. Second, LG is a static algorithm, with no concept of the time-value of money, capacity limits, opportunity costs, etc. Phase design is essentially a manual step, for which nested pits provide insufficient information in practice, and therefore the quality of the result in terms of potential net present value (NPV) depends strongly on the experience and expertise of the designer. This means that key input data such as commodity prices, different processes capacities and mine movement limits, are considered only at scheduling, when there is little room for optimisation. This sequential approach limits the potential value in each step, where a simplified problem is addressed, instead of addressing the real, and more complex problem, which is dynamic and should be solved as a whole.We present in this paper an algorithm, and its commercial software implementation, that addresses the dynamic problem as a whole, simultaneously and automatically creating a high-value strategic mine plan that adheres to basic operational constraints, determining dynamic cut-off grades and delivering a set of phases which can serve as a much stronger guide than nested pits for the final design. We discuss some of the key elements of the algorithm and propose a new methodology for strategic mine planning, where phase design dynamically responds to mining strategy definition. Arrow Energy NL has been operating a number of coal seam gas wells in the Darling Downs region of Queensland. At the time of writing this paper, the region is enduring an extended drought period. The local aquifers are depleting and have not been significantly recharged in over a decade. The local communities (both rural and townships) are struggling to obtain water. Currently, coal seam gas (CSG) operators (under licence) draw water from the coal seams as part of the gas production process and the majority of operators choose to evaporate this water, as it is characteristically brackish to saline in quality and as such must be contained. Although the water produced from one CSG operator is not sufficient to drought-proof the greater area of the Darling Downs, there is potential to supply smaller local areas and contribute to the sustainability of these communities. This paper outlines the work completed by Arrow and its local community partners on the Darling Downs to date, and discusses the application of the produced formation water for:stock watering in feedlots, as a feedstock for coal washing, as a potable water supply for Dalby, as an agricultural water supply for cotton farming, and use as a medium for growing salt-water fin fish.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) is undertaking a large research project involving partners from industry, universities and government, which aims to develop the necessary chemical and structural understanding of geopolymer materials made from waste products for them to be used to capture a significant market share of the concrete business for a given industrial region. We are investigating the suitability of a range of soluble silica-bearing waste streams for use as geopolymer concrete feedstocks. In order to utilise a variety of waste streams, either singly or blended, an understanding of the role of secondary metal ions (Fe, Ca, Mg, Ti, etc) in the geopolymerisation process is essential. A range of experimental and analytical techniques is therefore being used to better understand the structure-chemistry-property relationships of geopolymers. Currently, we are investigating geopolymers made from a variety of waste streams (fly ash, kaolinite, red mud, etc) available in the Kwinana Industrial Region, Western Australia. This paper will detail how the basic scientific research underpinning the project is vital if waste streams of varying composition are to be successfully used in a commercial concrete product and the regional synergies required to develop geopolymers from waste streams.

One of the challenges in the development of mineral processing simulators is modelling the liberation characteristics of particles produced by comminution circuits. Understanding the mineral characteristics of these particles is one of the keys to predicting their behaviour in separation circuits. While more fundamental research seeks to model the non-random breakage of ores this work examines whether we can move forward now by using observed characteristics of ores to model the composition of particles generated in comminution processes. Several researchers have noted the similarity of the liberation characteristics for a selected size fraction of particulate material, whether the fraction comes from a coarse material, such as the product from a jaw crusher, or a more finely ground material, such as the product from a ball mill. In most cases these observations were reported as an aside and were not the main focus of the published work. This observed behaviour has the potential to be a useful tool for modelling the particle characteristics in mineral comminution and separation circuits, particularly as we move towards the development of multi-component models. However, before the behaviour can be used widely we need to understand which ore types follow the observed pattern and which do not. The current work examines a range of ores and identifies which exhibit the pattern of similarity of composition for particles in a given size class that has been produced as the result of a variety of breakage conditions. The impact of mineralogy and texture on the evolution of liberation characteristics for both valuable and gangue minerals is discussed.

SomincorÆs Neves Corvo Mine, one of the largest copper producers in Europe, is currently constructing a paste backfill plant in order to replace cemented rockfill in its bench and fill stopes and possibly replace hydraulic sandfill in the drift and fill stopes. A 250 m flow loop was constructed at the mine and the flow properties of various paste blends were investigated. Cycloned tailings and total tailings were both pumped successfully as pastes and were also combined with waste rock for additional testing. The pressure losses in 102 mm and 154 mm diameter pipeline were recorded at flowrates up to 60 m3/hr and are presented at slumps from 120 mm to 250 mm. The data showed the sensitivity of paste mixtures to slight changes in consistency, confirming the need for accurate control during paste production and distribution. The flow results clearly showed the different paste behaviour between cycloned and total tailings pastes and the change in properties at low and high slumps. In addition to pressure loss data, strength testing was done on 38 mm and 82 mm diameter samples. Further strength testing is ongoing at the mine using fly ash as a supplement to cement, reducing the overall binder cost. Preliminary engineering for the underground distribution system is briefly discussed, with reference to the siting of the plant. The Neves Corvo Mine is particularly shallow and alternative methods to pumping were sought in order to ensure sufficient hydraulic head for underground distribution. The comparison of options had to take into account the capital and operating costs, the operation of the plant and the impact on the future expansion of paste fill utilisation at Neves Corvo.

Since 2019, the mine planning team at Olympic Dam has been establishing and maturing a shift from deterministic to probabilistic scheduling techniques. This paper outlines this journey undertaken by the mine planning team, key learnings from implementation and further work required to increase the level of planning maturity. Olympic Dam (OD) is a highly variable, polymetallic orebody with a vertically integrated value chain from operations to final product. The processing plant has a tight set of quality constraints which are managed through timing of stopes from varying parts of the orebody. Value is eroded for the operation when forecasted quality of the mine feed encounters disruptions from unplanned changes to the timing of stope starts. As production has moved from the historic Northern Mining Area into the more geologically complex Southern Mining Area, average stope size has reduced, resulting in increased mining fronts required to meet production targets. This has created a problem of increased schedule complexity and difficulties in identifying and communicating resource priorities within a large set of individual stope critical paths. The problem was approached by considering each stope as an individual project constructed by teams working across multiple projects at any one time. The operation could then be considered a multi-project environment with shared resources and enables the application of Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) to the mine plan. Key to CCPM is the addition of time buffers to protect the critical path of a project form upstream or downstream processes. Implementation of time buffers protects the stope start date against compliance to plan variance. The monitoring of each time buffer consumption, as a proportion of total construction activities completed enables proactive prioritisation of resources. This resulted in an increase in the number of stopes starting in accordance with the mine plan, simplified communication of priorities to all levels of the operation, increased compliance to plan and a clear measure of schedule risk during planning routines.

Copper and gold mineralisation at Batu Hijau is directly related to quartz veining and wall rock alteration that developed in close spatial and temporal association with multiple tonalite porphyry intrusions. To its advantage with respect to the study and better understanding of the evolution of the porphyry system, Batu Hijau has comparatively minor late alteration and mineralisation overprints. This paper summarises results of detailed geological logging, petrographic studies and geochemical analyses of diamond drill cores from the deeper sections of the Batu Hijau porphyry system (ie its roots). The Certificate in Mining Studies program at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada is a collaborative initiative between mining schools and industry to provide accessible, cost-effective, accredited continuing education and training, designed to address the future needs of the global mining community. Content is provided by industry specialists and delivered through an integration of online learning, short courses and interactive webcasts. Accreditation is provided by a network of mining schools. In 2011, the program will deliver close to 100 short courses and interactive webcasts and provide 24/7 access to more than 130 online courses in six mining streams, to participants from as far afield as Tanzania, Argentina and Mongolia. The program is proving adaptable to corporate and mine site engineer-in-training and graduate-development programs, as well as providing accessible professional development opportunities for individuals. It also provides opportunities for cross-training from other disciplines and integration with mining school curricula.

"Surveying, and as a result, surveyors, have been around since the start of time, and it has been said that so has their methodology!The theodolite and tape have been the backbone of a time-tested practice that has led to ground breaking advancements such as electronic distance measurement (EDM), global positioning system (GPS) and positional laser scanning. However, it was the introduction of the unmanned aerial system (UAS) that has allowed mine sites such as St Ives to take the next step towards truly turning survey data into metadata.This paper will explain how the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was adapted to meet the requirements of a mine site supporting a major open pit operation, and how the open pit mining team adjusted their planning and production processes to maximise use of the extra data and information available to them.The advantages of the system include point cloud surveys with corresponding large-scale up-to-date photography and computer generated high detail contouring of mined areas that are then incorporated into the mine plan. All the while, the use of the UAV must be tailored to each specific problem encountered and a solution then matched.Citation:Steven, R, 2016. There has been increased focus in Australia on large diameter raise boring for ventilation shafts and orepass excavation in good quality, brittle, highly stressed rock. As mining in many parts of Australia progresses to deeper levels, more vertical openings are being excavated in highly stressed ground conditions. However, whilst shafts have been successfully raise bored in highly stressed rock, it is often at a significantly increased risk of loss or damage to inhole equipment. It is important for both mine owners and contractors to have an appreciation of these risks at the planning and tendering phases of raise boring contracts. This paper provides an understanding of the risks associated with large diameter raise boring and a review of methods to predict failure in highly stressed rock.

The Renison Bell Tin Mine on the West Coast of Tasmania has recently installed a new underground ore handling system incorporating underground crushing, conveying and hoisting facilities. Contracts for the sinking of the shaft and the development of the mine were let and managed by the operator, Renison Limited. Hardcastle & Richards was responsible for the design, procurement and construction management of the fixed plant and equipment including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation services. The system demonstrates worldÆs best practice in design and incorporates a state-of-the-art integrated control system allowing the entire system to be controlled by a single operator located in the underground crusher chamber. A rapid construction period was achieved, despite the difficult and constrained underground environment, without affecting the ongoing operations of the mine. The mine, which was established in the mid-1960s, had previously operated by trucking ore to the surface via a decline. Truck haulage distances and costs had increased as the mine became deeper over the years. By the 1990s it had become apparent that, in order to remain economically viable, it was necessary to reduce truck haulage distances and allow the mine to go still deeper to access orebodies such as Rendeep beneath the current workings. The Internal Shaft System achieved this by eliminating approximately 5 km of truck haulage. It allows the production rate to be increased to up to 1 Mtpa compared with a limit of 628 kt per annum by direct truck haulage to surface. The access it provides to the Rendeep ore and other deep orebodies greatly increases the amount of ore which can be economically mined.

Assessing and managing instability hazards is an essential activity when working with unstable natural slopes and excavated open pit mining slopes. Slope monitoring has become the standard technique for the management of geotechnical risks associated with mine slope instability hazards. In recent decades, a proliferation of new monitoring techniques such as terrestrial radar, satellite InSAR and LIDAR have become standard operational tools, complementing conventional survey-based monitoring solutions. A reliable monitoring system should identify and record incipient anomalous slope movement. Although the most obvious purpose of a monitoring system is safety related, slope deformation and performance monitoring also enhance the understanding of slope behaviour and assists in improving system design and implementation. For a monitoring system to be considered an effective early warning tool, it needs to operate in real-time and should be linked to the mine’s emergency communication systems. Terrestrial radar systems have been developed that can provide near real-time measurements, at a high level of precision and covering broad areas in all weather conditions. This has had a positive impact on the management of geotechnical risks in operational conditions. The technology adoption of RADAR in mine monitoring has significantly progressed in the last 20 years from technology enthusiasts, to visionaries, to pragmatists to conservative users. However, the increasing adoption of RADAR cannot reduce or remove other monitoring techniques that often have important benefits; even if these technologies cannot be used as a real-time operational tool. An increasing awareness on the importance of combining data from different monitoring techniques to develop a holistic picture of all possible geotechnical hazards is a current industry trend. This is proving to be an excellent foundation for managing hazards associated with slope instability in open pit mines, and is only expected to improve with time with the adoption of new technologies based on big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Excavation through fill material in underground metalliferous mines is usually avoided where possible, unlike in Civil Engineering application where excavation through soft ground is normally a matter of course. In the mining situation, where excavation is normally for access only, then excavation designs are engineered for mining in hard rock, except where previous lack of forward planning has made such excavation inevitable or a mining strategy sequence necessitates some mining through fill in order to achieve optimum recovery of ore. Historically, this has been the case, because of the lack of knowledge of the support characteristics of the fill material placed underground and the lack of knowledge of the composition of the fill material as placed. The expertise and experience available from mechanised excavation techniques in Civil Engineering application (shield jacking, forepoling, spiling, and soft tunnel boring, to name a few) are available for application to the underground mining situation if the need ever arises. The authors have presented their ideas for developing a powder sampling device in the I-Corps™ program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This is an intensive customer discovery program developed to increase the economic impact of the research sponsored by NSF.The I-Corps™ program requires performing at least 100 interviews with potential customers in various industries. These interviews are essential to establish the need for a particular product or solution, and identify potential commercialisation partners and competition. The interviews have revealed the absence of Theory of Sampling (TOS) principles in many companies. The interviews are designed to identify the difficulties associated with current sampling practices that do not meet TOS principles.The I-Corps™ program is a significant challenge for scientists who often avoid discussing a concept in fear of losing their research idea. The program teaches how to obtain information without releasing the important intellectual property related to a product development idea. The I-Corps™ methods have been used to discover the prevailing ideas on sampling in various industries.I-Corps™ also teaches how to present ideas to investors; another significant challenge for a scientist. Mining employees undertaking shift work are at considerable risk of experiencing sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disruptions. In the complex, high-risk environment of mining, these sleep and circadian disruptions lead to adverse impacts on employee health, alertness and safety. Evidence-based tools that effectively target improvements in sleep health amongst shift workers are needed. Variability in work hours and individual differences in the response to shift work mean that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution is often insufficient in complex work environments. Currently no interventions provide tailored support for shift workers based on their rosters, personal commitments and sleep habits. Existing technologies, such as smartphone applications and watches, allow sleep monitoring, but their strategies are targeted towards night sleepers, which does not translate to shift work contexts. To address this, our team has developed an innovative digital tool that implements biomathematical models to provide automated, personalised sleep and circadian intervention strategies to optimise sleep, alertness and performance during shift work. The tool uses mathematical models of sleep and alertness regulation that provide physiologically optimal times for an individual to sleep when experiencing circadian disruption. This program of work included co-designed development of a world-first app with shift workers and the examination of the preliminary efficacy of the intervention for improving sleep, alertness and performance.

Increased environmental regulations and pressures have created changing and new demands for tailings management strategies in a variety of mining applications. Critical among these items is the disposal of tailings as the pursuit of increased yields and lower costs have driven the application of different process technologies. With a number of technologies having a niche application focus, the belt filter press has been utilised for decades as a cost-effective and versatile option for dewatering different types of mineral tailings and other waste process streams. One of the critical advantages of the belt filter press is the technology’s ability to adapt and work in numerous plant designs, operating conditions and applications. As permitting and disposal options have become more stringent, plant designers, operators and equipment suppliers must develop comprehensive and site-specific economic, design and process evaluation techniques to ensure proper equipment selection and system design for belt filter presses or any other dewatering technologies. This paper will explore these techniques in relation to belt filter presses (with reference to other technologies) in a variety of different applications, along with other considerations to ensure a successful tailings dewatering system and disposal design. Summaries of equipment performance characteristics, operating and maintenance strategies and optimisation techniques will also be addressed in conjunction with the belt filter press’s adaptability to different plant designs and the resulting tailings characteristics.CITATION:Fenzel, M S, 2015. The broad biodiversity of our country is manifested through several different biological forms. From the villages of Portovelo and San Gerardo in the southern part of Ecuador, some samples of water and rocks were taken in order to identify the native micro-organisms which take part in the natural processes of leaching of sulfurous minerals. The presence of Spp Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was determined together with a fungi sample which has not yet been characterised by the current workers. These have been isolated, grown, experimented and conserved in appropriate cryogenic environments. The present research intends to study the individual and group adaptation of the bacteria and the fungi upon suitable systems of agitation and ventilation, in combination with several different concentrations of refractory auriferous samples. These refractory samples were derived from old mine workings and the experiments were performed to test the effectiveness of the isolated species in bioleaching as pre-treatments upon the cyaniding processes. The capability of these bacteria to develop in environments with high concentrations of cyanide has also been studied, to investigate the possible use of bacteria in the biodegradation of cyanide. The presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in acid conditions has already been tested in advance, however, the presence of fungi species in these conditions are studied to prove their efficiency as another alternative for the bioleaching of refractory auriferous minerals and Baptista, 1998).

In order to reduce carbon emissions from the steelmaking process and achieve carbon neutrality, global steel companies are establishing their own medium to long-term strategies and implementation plans using competitive technological advantages held by each steel company. At this point, Hyundai Steel has formulated a product-oriented carbon-neutral strategy based on innovative processing that makes use of Hyundai Steel’s own strength. Based on our experience in electric arc furnace product manufacturing and blast furnace operation in an integrated steel mill, Hyundai Steel is driving the Hy3 (Hy-cube) project, which involves a unique hybrid production system utilising hydrogen and hydrogen-based renewable energy sources. This initiative aims to achieve carbon-neutral production and eventually specialise in producing premium carbon-neutral automotive parts. The project has originality in that it involves not only designing processes using electric furnaces to produce premium steel products such as car body panels and electrical steel sheets, but also aims to reduce carbon emissions from the process, developing carbon-neutral products based on market demand. To assess the feasibility of the Hy3 project, Hyundai Steel conducted two pilot productions. The first pilot was producing a prototype of lower-arm part using electric arc furnace with three different kinds of raw materials: molten iron, HBI (hot briquetted iron), and scrap. Successful performance evaluation of auto parts with 1 GPa strength was achieved. The second pilot has been focused on tire cord steel, with the first-phase tests yielding a 33 per cent reduction in carbon footprint (CFP). Using the advantages of operating experience in electric arc furnace, Hyundai Steel is preparing for test operations producing various automotive parts using an electric arc furnace (EAF) to advance the Hy3 concept. From a medium to long-term technological development perspective, Hyundai Steel’s blueprint includes producing high-end carbon-neutral steel products using hydrogen-reduced iron as raw material.

A review of the most widely used global extraction sequences in sublevel is undertaken. The review includes techniques used to extract massive as well as single or multiple steeply dipping tabular orebodies. The paper also deals with thick flat lying orebodies suitable for open stoping. Techniques used to minimise the effect of stress redistributions on a global scale are discussed for all the extraction sequences analysed.
