Underground mine ventilation is now com monly simulated on a digital computer. Such a programme, incorporating natural ventilation has been modified by others to account for methane emission and elevated local tempera- tures. At Wollongong University, the pro- gramme was further developed and extensive interactive graphics incorporated such that any view of the three dimensional mine could be viewed, and superimposed upon that view are areas where a nominated parameter has exceeded a particular value - generally at a nominated time after a particular event and usually a fire/explosion of one type or another. A further programme was developed such that up to 20 'times' could be examined at a particu- lar location after say, a fuel rich fire at some other place in the mine. The output from this programme includes a plot of methane 1, smoke 1, temperature, pressure and air flow versus time - a most useful graphic to observe the limits of safe attendance in a particular Airway.

The increasing mining depths of South African gold mine deposits are resulting in ever-increasing heat loads associated with depth and the geothermal gradient. Together with changes in the mining horizons brought about by the depletion of older, shallower, high-grade reserves, this leads to the need for the continuous review and redesign of cooling requirements. Traditionally, cooling requirements were met by using a combination of cooling strategies, including bulk air cooling on surface and underground. If this proved to be insufficient, chilled service water and secondary remote air-cooling systems were introduced. This paper reviews these practices in order to provide a cost-effective means of catering for the introduction of hydropower at the Gold Fields Ltd South African operations. Some of the equipment that has been developed to meet the requirements of both hydropower and refrigeration includes hydropower fans, cooling coils and in-stope venturis. These are individually described and discussed, together with their roles within the greater strategy. The planned change in the cooling strategy and the employment of these technologies have effectively doubled the cooling available, from 10 MW to more than 20 MW, extracted from the hydropower water used to drive the mining equipment. In conclusion, the cooling strategy described allows a total heat load of approximately 52 MW to be successfully ventilated and cooled through the use of combined surface and underground refrigeration installations, and through the use of hydropower-chilled water.

The Lochiel Deposit is a large occurrence of soft brown coal about 130 km north of Adelaide. The deposit is undergoing continued evalua- tion of which an integral part was the excavation of a Trial Pit. The Trial Pit was deemed necessary to demonstrate that the deposit may be mined efficiently by draglines and the particular emphasis was on the geotech- nical and hydrogeological aspects of what may be termed difficult mining conditions. The dewatering of the Trial Pit was commenced in September 1986. After considerable planning and excavation was successfully completed in May 1987. The project is unique in terms of its size and technical com- plexity. It entailed excavation of over 230,000 m3 of overburden to an overall depth of 36 metres. The excavated material was utilised for experimentation in a Trial Dump. Included in the Trial Pit design were several novel techniques includ- ing depressurisation drains to improve mining conditions in soil strength materials and the use of vacuum to aid dewatering.

In designing climate exposed soil structures such as caps and covers over mine waste it is necessary to include the wetting and drying influences of the local climate in order to accurately predict the net water, vapour and oxygen fluxes across the ground surface and through the base of the covers. The most advanced evaporative flux modelling tools currently available to practitioners have been limited to rigorous one-dimensional models (ie SoilCover) or semi-empirical two-dimensional models (ie Hydrus-2D). It is common practice to use the rigorous one-dimensional evaporative flux model results to develop a surface boundary function that can then be applied within a saturated/unsaturated two-dimensional model. However, this is not an ideal situation and results in a further approximation of the real system being modelled. This paper will highlight the use of a new modelling tool, VADOSE/W, which brings existing, rigorously formulated evaporative flux theory into the familiar setting of a two-dimensional model. The model is enhanced for simultaneous two-dimensional oxygen gas transport analysis, which has direct application in the mine waste industry. A key focus of the paper will be addressing the limitations of one-dimensional analysis for cover systems on sloping and hummocky terrain.

This paper studies the grinding behaviour of vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrate in a ball mill. The grinding kinetics, surface morphology, lattice distortion, wettability and moisture capacity were analysed. Grinding kinetics equation was established based on population balances model with the size distribution data from a laser diffraction technique. The SEM photos of the ground concentrate showed that the surface gets rough with increasing grind time. Agglomeration of fine particles was enhanced when the grinding time reached 30 minutes. X-ray diffraction results showed that a loss in crystalline occurred with increasing the grinding time. The peaks of the X-ray diffraction patterns are significantly broadened with increasing grinding time. Wettability, characterised by contact angle between the material and water, improved due to the fact that the surface roughness increased with increasing grinding time. Moisture capacity of concentrate ascends abruptly in the first three minutes and then changed slowly with increasing grinding time. The water transfer coefficient in the particles increased rapidly in the first six minutes and then decreased quickly until grinding time reached 12 minutes.CITATION:Zhang, R, Lv, X, Bai, C, Xu, J and Zhang, S, 2013. "The Phu Kham copper-gold operation in the Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining ten per cent held by the Laos PDR Government.The original 12 Mt/a copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. An incremental improvement program resulted in a number of circuit changes being incorporated by 2011, including conversion of conditioning tanks to flotation cells and the installation of a Jameson Cell cleaner scalper. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase throughput to 18 Mt/a. In April, 2013 the Phu Kham Increased Recovery Project was commissioned to maximise performance by debottlenecking the plant IsaMill™ regrind and cleaning capacity.With the variable mineralogy of Phu Kham ore, control of the c concentrate regrind circuit is essential in terms of achieving effective liberation to maintain concentrator performance. On a routine basis laboratory regrind signature plot data is compared with daily surveys of the operational IsaMills™. More extensive surveys are also conducted to determine size distribution on a mineralogical basis and the effect of fine regrinding on pulp electrochemistry and flotation performance. This paper provides a review of the operating performance of the Phu Kham IsaMills™ with regard to power draw, feed and product size distribution, feed per cent solids, mineralogy and pulp electrochemistry. The induration furnace for iron ore pellets was originally designed to process concentrates with high contents of magnetite. To support the use of haematite concentrates, internal fuel was added to the pellets in the form of ground coke breeze or anthracite. To ensure that the addition of coke breeze was not excessive, the ‘heat of magnetite equivalent’ or heat of magnetite equivalent (HME) relationship was developed, guaranteeing that the fi ring temperature requirements remained the same. However, this oversimplifi es the different reaction paths of magnetite and carbon in iron ore pellets. At fi ring temperatures, gas diffusion controlled reactions such as the combustion of coke, the calcination of carbonates and the reduction and oxidation of iron oxides can all occur in different parts of the pellet simultaneously. The interaction of these reactions produces a range of atmospheres across the diameter of the pellet that vary from oxidising at the pellet shell to reducing at the pellet core. Mathematical modelling and pellet fi ring experiments to preheat temperatures before quenching have shown that a higher proportion of coke relative to magnetite slows down the oxidation process, irrespective of temperature. A higher temperature, however, results in an increase in the rate of haematite reduction in the pellet core and a more reducing atmosphere, which could lead to different sintering rates in different parts of the pellet and shrinkage cracks forming. To observe these gas-solid reaction rates at a larger scale, the COREM pot grate has been updated with an additional oxygen analyser. This, along with other improvements, will allow better optimisation of straight-grate firing cycles for different pellet compositions.

Rosebery Mine is situated on the west coast of Tasmania and is AustraliaÆs largest volcanic-hosted base and precious metals deposit (zinc, lead, copper, gold and silver). The milling operation has been producing zinc, lead and copper concentrates continuously for over 100 years. RoseberyÆs long life demonstrates the operation to be high grade, and high margin, capable of operating through several commodity price cycles. Paradoxically, throughout this long history the ælife-of-mineÆ as defined by proven and probable reserves has been short. Zinifex has demonstrated its commitment to discover the future of Rosebery with the growth project æProject HorizonsÆ. The aim of the project is to extend the life of mine beyond 2020, with an additional exploration expenditure of $19 million over three years. Despite the maturity of the deposit, early success has confirmed the potential with the discovery of new resources. Mine planning strategic studies are challenging established paradigms of mine production, throughput rates and metal cut-off grades. Discovering the optimal process rate for Rosebery, by examining the æHill of ValueÆ and underground mine optimisation is proving critical to the best exploitation of RoseberyÆs rich resources. The promise of finding a mine within a mine is being realised, with new lenses being delivered by exploration success and real grade/tonnage options optimised through dynamic mine planning. The future of Rosebery is co-dependent on these two areas of discovery. This ensures capital expenditure decisions are informed, to secure the next 20 years of wealth creation and beyond.

All industrial water users are required to hold Water Rights, which are in effect licences to take, use, dam, divert or discharge water. Water Rights are obtained through a legally defined process and any potentially affected party has the per to object to their granting. A special tribunal hears the evidence for and against an application, and issues its decision, which is reviewable in a higher court on Appeal. Rights, if granted, are issued subject to conditions and, in the case of mining discharges, limits would be set on flaw rate, suspended solids concentrations, turbidity, pH and the concentrations of any potential toxicants. This paper presents a case study of an integrated, catchment wide water management plan for Lake Waahi, that was prepared by the author, and others while the author was in the employ of CoalCorp, and its predecessor, State Coal Mines. Road tunnels are an accepted and effective transportation solution in urban areas to mitigate increasing traffic congestion and facilitate improved urban connectivity in a cost effective manner while meeting societal goals to reduce the impact of construction. In designing a tunnel system, there is a requirement to achieve an acceptable level of in-tunnel air quality, as well as meeting ambient air quality goals. In Australia, there is also a requirement for zero portal emissions which means that all pollutants must be emitted to the atmosphere via a ventilation stack.Traditionally, effective pollutant dispersion has been achieved by constructing tall ventilation stacks which disperse pollutants into the atmosphere at a high level. The dominant variable parameters in the effectiveness of the dispersion under the ventilation engineers control are the efflux velocity, the height of the ventilation outlet and the concentration of pollutants at the point of discharge. During off-peak operations the required ventilation exhaust rate can be reduced due to the decrease in traffic. This can lead to a drop in the efflux velocity from the stack and therefore the effectiveness of the dispersion. This potentially drives the need for a higher outlet, or an increased exhaust rate to achieve a higher efflux velocity with consequent effects on energy consumption.The paper proposes a method of varying the cross-sectional area of the ventilation stack with the use of motorised control dampers, thereby maintaining a sufficiently high efflux velocity throughout the 24 hour period independent of traffic conditions. This allows the use of a potentially shorter ventilation stack.

Material characterisation, ore sequencing and process capability are commonly regarded as the key parameters to consider in designing and operating an effective pit to plant supply chain. Therefore, an understanding of rock mass properties is the starting point for controlling the presentation of problematic material to the ore handling plant and optimising process utilisation. There are different methodologies for characterising problematic material and ore handleability which exist across a spectrum of sophistication. At one end of this spectrum are simple indices built using first principles geology and at the other are complex algorithms developed using advanced analytical methods, machine learning and ore traceability. Regardless of the method, without an integrated process for careful management of problematic ore, material handling delays (ie blocked, bridged, blinded and buried events) will interrupt the stable flow of production. The ability of the ore control geologist to mitigate these delays is central to the ore handleability challenge. This paper describes a quick and easy solution that links the presentation of ore to the operating window at the crusher. This operating window is based on material characterisation, using the physical, textural and mechanical properties of the rock mass, and crusher performance. It also describes how a basic problematic ore index (POI) can be developed using ore tracking to the production face, petrographic studies of ore texture and mineralogy, and existing variables in the geological model. Finally, this paper will demonstrate that by coding the POI into the geological model for mine planning, together with performance monitoring through compliance to plan routines, material handling delays at the crusher can be reduced, unlocking significant resource value.

"Predictive maintenance (also known as PHM or equipment ‘health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future equipment failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:reduction of equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetimeautomatic determination of the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis avoidance of costs of unnecessary maintenance and unexpected failures improved safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data preprocessing is performed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques. In the case that data isn’t available for the full range of operating modes, operating scenarios can be simulated. Machine learning techniques are then used to estimate equipment health. Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be operationalised in an IT environment such as a server or cloud. Alternatively, algorithms may be implemented in an embedded system directly on the equipment, allowing for faster response times and significantly reducing the amount of data sent over the network.In this paper, we use both historical and simulated data of the plant under various modes of operation including run to failure, and we then leverage machine learning techniques in MATLAB to estimate degradation and remaining useful life. This technique, of combining both simulation models and machine learning, in the areas of predictive maintenance and equipment health monitoring has been adopted by Safran, makers of aircraft jet engines, since 2007. Redpath Australia is using a unique mining method for the Australian underground coal industry at Kestrel Mine Extension in the Bowen Basin, Central Queensland.The project involves completing two separate drifts from the surface for access to the German Creek Coal Seam located approximately 230 m below the existing surface. The scope of work is primarily the construction of two drifts; the first is 1577 m at 1 in 6 gradient and the second 1874 m at 1 in 8 gradient. Each drift has been developed by a Mitsui S200 roadheader with modifications to allow for a continuous tunnelling/mining cycle operation. A shotcrete boom has been fitted to the left hand side of the machine with the operators console located at ground level. Another operators console is elevated on the right hand side of the machine to allow operation of the rotary drill boom which is mounted on a slide rail to allow flexibility of positioning depending on the stage of the cycle. In support of the roadheader activities, an integrated conveyor system mounted on a sliding floor arrangement is able to be advanced as the mining face progresses. This sliding floor consists of four 1.5 m × 6 m sections that utilise hydraulic rams to ‘walk’ inbye, allowing room for installation of precast concrete floor panels for final floor completion. This method borrows from the tunnelling and construction industries to eliminate place-change delays in the mining cycle by enabling complete ground support installation without retreat of the primary development machine from the face. The aim is to reduce the project duration with the completion of final floor and services to within 30 m of the operating face as it advances.

The Porgera gold deposit in the Papua New Guinea highlands contains about 387 tonnes of gold. The results of its exploration show the benefits of persistence and commitment to this difficult deposit. The mineralization consists of a complex intermix of auriferous and argentiferous sulphides, gold tellurides and free gold as disseminations, veins, stockworks and breccia matrix. Its deposition was structurally contolled within a system of mafic diorite intrusions and adjacent sediments. Two styles of alteration accompany the mineralization. Gold grades vary erratically throughout the deposit. Over a period of 22 years nine phases of exploration have been undertaken by six companies or consortia of companies. Surface rock chip sampling, geological mapping followed by scout and systematic grid diamond drilling have been the most successful exploration tools. Exhaustive metallurgical process investigations and economic evaluations of mining options have been invaluable in guiding the exploration towards defining the ore body. Impetus was given to the project during times of flagging enthusiasm by several important discoveries and a breakthrough in the metallurgical processing approach. The discovery of high grade ore deep in Zone VII in 1984 turned this marginal deposit into a potentially very large gold mine.

As underground mines become more geotechnically challenging with increasing depth and excavation size, the requirement for ground support to be installed as per design becomes more critical. The verification of installation quality for cable bolts and grouted rock bolts is difficult to assess. Current methods to control quality have limitations; pull testing is largely inconclusive with only extremely poor installation being identifiable. Audits during installation can only capture a small percentage of installed bolts. Following large rock mass displacement from either squeezing ground or seismic events, even previously well installed bolts may have yielded and require replacement. A method to provide an improved understanding of the reinforcement installation quality is Non- Destructive Testing (NDT) using acoustic reflection. To validate the accuracy of an NDT system, both plain and bulbed strand cable bolts were grouted in clear plastic tubes. The encapsulation grout quality was deliberately varied from full encapsulation through to partial encapsulation and a range of different size voids. The clear tubes allowed the ground encapsulation to be observed. Cable bolts strands were cut at varying lengths and different water cement grout ratios were used. Acoustic testing of the cable bolt specimens was completed blind; the technicians were not aware of what was being tested. The NDT results correlated well with the grout encapsulation, with differences between full encapsulation, minor voids and major voids being determined. The different water cement ratio and bolt lengths (including when partially cut) were also identifiable but with some discrepancies. Trials of the technology underground have also shown the data collection process to be relatively quick with each bolt taking 1-2 minutes to test, with interpretation of the results able to be completed soon after. The NDT results collected from the underground trial showed a wide variance in cable bolt grout encapsulation quality indicating that there were installation issues.

Magnetite ores can be used to produce very high-grade concentrates that are suitable feed for the direct reduction process route but the high sulfur content of some concentrates can cause substantial environmental issues. Processing of high sulfur magnetite ore is therefore increasingly problematic for the industry. Generally, the industry demands a concentrate with <0.05 per cent sulfur and <2 per cent silica. This paper reports the outcomes of a study to produce a concentrate with the requisite low sulfur content from a sulfur-rich magnetite ore. The main findings may be summarised as follows: if the sulfur is present in magnetite as nonmagnetic pyrrhotite or pyrite, it can be beneficiated using magnetic separation and hence, monoclinic pyrrhotite is magnetic and is magnetically recovered with magnetite leading to a concentrate that is too high in sulfur. X-ray diffraction and QEMSCAN analyses revealed that the magnetite concentrate was liberated at P80 30 microns and was associated with maghemite, pyrrhotite (magnetic), carbonates and hematite with very low amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite and arsenopyrite. Sulfur removal using flotation was the first stage of investigation and this required flash flotation in the grinding stage followed by column flotation of the initial concentrate to generate the final concentrate. At the same time, it was observed that oxidation of the pyrrhotite had a negative effect on its flotation requiring copper sulfate to activate it. Bioleaching and concentrate leaching were also considered and achieved over 90 per cent sulfur removal but were deemed unsuitable owing to the production of highly reactive wastes and high CAPEX. Reference is made to a number of operating magnetite producers and how they manage the sulfur in feed.

Data management is a significant, but perhaps unrecognised, consideration for any organisation embarking on a geometallurgy program. While resource geologists are accustomed to dealing with thousands or millions of samples and their associated assays, metallurgists and mineralogists have traditionally carried out only a few expensive and complicated tests and consequently tend to manage the resultant data in spreadsheets. The emerging discipline of geometallurgy arrives with significant challenges as a result of the sheer volume of data generated. As an example, the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program has generated more than:60&nbsp;000 physical subsamples analysed for up to 30 analytes; 25&nbsp;000 spreadsheet-based laboratory test results; 30&nbsp;000 sized fractions analysed via QXRD, MLA and/or QEMSCAN;multiple external providers of data, and more than seven terabytes of data. Considerations for any geometallurgy data management system include storage space, data integrity, accessibility, traceability (sample provenance), maintenance and ease of use, integration with data providers and the ability to modify the system to adapt to changing requirements. Further, aspects of a geometallurgy program, such as conducting a range of tests on one sample, producing subsamples such as concentrates and tailings, compositing and routine QA/QC may not be well handled by existing software and providers geared to standard geochemistry, mineralogy or metallurgical test programs. The development of a geometallurgy database using existing software (AcQuire), and the associated file management system will be described for a large geometallurgy program at Olympic Dam. As with many aspects of geometallurgy there is no approach that meets the needs of every site or program. Recognition of data management as an issue, a structured approach in the program planning phase and commitment to executing the strategy will increase the chances of successfully mining the geometallurgical data.

"As of 1 December 2014, the 2012 edition of the JORC Code requires Ore Reserves to be defined by studies at the pre-feasibility or feasibility level. This paper examines how the pathway for most mining developments is determined in the Pre-Feasibility Study and how a trade-off must be made between the need to make the best decision, the constraints of limited time and resources, and the level of the project’s accuracy and uncertainty in terms of value. Issues considered include framing the scope of the study, planning for robust decision-making and ensuring effective communication between the diverse disciplines within the team.An inherent conflict exists between the immediate value added to a mining business from an increase in ore reserves resulting from a ‘quick’ Pre-Feasibility Study and the long-term value of pursuing a development strategy based on proper investigation and evaluation of the options. Recognition and resolution of this conflict is necessary if a project is to progress into future development stages, both in a timely manner and with the optimal development alternative and strategy.The challenge for project developers and those conducting the Pre-Feasibility Study is to understand what the key deliverables are (ie an Ore Reserve statement, option selection, business evaluation, forward work plan or risks) and how to follow good practice to ensure that these deliver value.CITATION:Logan, D J and Jackson, J, 2016. Adsorption Behaviours of Humic Substances onto Iron Ore Particle Surface Humic substances extracted from lignite mainly consist of fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA), which have been successfully used as good composite binders for iron ore pellets in laboratory tests and industrial production. However, there exists a general lack of understanding of the interaction between humic substances and iron ore particles surfaces. In this research, by means of zeta potential measurements, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrum, colorimetric method and Environmental Scanning Electron Micrograph (ESEM) imaging, the adsorption behaviours of FA and HA onto the surfaces of iron ore particles are investigated. The zeta potential results indicate that adsorption of FA on the iron ore particles can be characterised by specific and electrostatic interactions, while adsorption of HA is by electrostatic and chemical adsorption interactions. FTIR spectrum results show that adsorption force of FA on the iron ore particle surfaces is stronger than that of HA. From results of colorimetric method, compared with HA, adsorption amount and adsorption rate of FA is more and faster, respectively. FA molecule presents on the surface of magnetite in the shape of an araneose network structure according to the ESEM images, while HA molecule appears on the surface of magnetite in the form of small flocs or microclusters. Humic substances are effective to iron ore pelletisation. Comparsion of agglomeration results show that the different mechanisms of adsorption result in varied agglomeration behaviours. Theses findings above would be beneficial to the implications of composite binder for agglomeration. &nbsp;
