A reappraisal of the stratigraphy, new regional kinematic analysis and thermobarometric data allow a new interpretation of the metamorphic zoning and tectonic structure of the Upper Eocene high-pressure metamorphic core complex of northern New Caledonia allow a three steps evolution to be proposed : 1) subduction and understacking of previously thinned continental crust elements; 2) subduction blocking due to the crustal thickening; 3) crustal thinning and extensional detachment during the diapir-like uplift and unroofing of the eclogitic core. Steps 2 and 3 may be partly contemporaneous. Such a model accounts for the thermobarometric and radiochronologic data, and also for the weakness of substratum deformation during the emplacement of the ophiolitic nappe.

The Mt Todd Gold Project is located 42 km northwest of the township of Katherine within the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated in the southeastern portion of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The Batman gold deposit, the largest of several deposits at Mt Todd, hosts an identified mineral resource of 92.9 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t) as at 31 December 1993. Host rocks at Batman are assigned to the Early Proterozoic Burrell Creek Formation, comprising greywacke and siltstone interbedded with shale. Gold mineralisation is associated with a very broad zone of sheeted and stockwork quartz-sulphide veins that occupy a corridor of intense brittle fracture and faulting. A conceptual model of formation involves the dilation of joints and micro-faults within overlying sediments during sinistral movement along a basement shear zone. Synchronous granite intrusion generated convective circulation of crustal fluids through the sedimentary pile resulting in the formation of auriferous quartz veins within favourable structures. The Batman zone of mineralisation is not directly related to fold structures which typify several other major gold deposits within the Pine Creek Geosyncline.

The paper describes the 209 in. single stage axial flow mine ventilating fan which commenced operation at The Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken'Hill, N.S.W., in January, 1954.This fan is used to ,ventilate the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited and, at the time of installation it was the largest fan of its type in the world. It has amaximum capacity of 900,000 c.f.m. at 4·2 in. watergauge and is equipped with adjustable pitch blades and a novel form of variable speed drive.The considerations which lead to the adoption of this particular design are outlined, and a full description of the contruction and installation of the fan and auxiliaries is given.Comprehensive acceptance tests were carried out on the completed installation and, the testing procedure is described in detail. The results of sound level measurements are also included. A brief report on the performance during the 12 month period from 1st July, 1954, to 30th June, 1955, is then given.SELECTION AND DESIGN OF FANGeneral ConsiderationsBecause of the economic advantages of joint ventilation of the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, it was decided, after a full review of the future ventilating requirements of both mines, to sink a 20 ft. diameter circular upcast airway on the common boundary of the two properties, to handle a maximum quantity of 900,000 c.f.m.The anticipated air requirements were at this stage estimated to be:(a) initially 700,000 c.f.m. through a mine equivalent orifice of 160 to 2'40 sq. ft. Drill monitors for rotary blasthole drills have been available to the mining industry since the 1970s. The early monitors were pen strip chart recorders that were developed for the oil drilling industry and adapted to mining. They recorded drilling parameters such as depth, pull-down pressure, torque, RPM, and hailing air pressure. While these recorders could generate a large volume of paper, the amount of useful data was minimal. The data was not summarised and required an engineer to interpret the chart traces. Being a mechanical recorder, the devices were also susceptible to frequent failures. Modem electronics, and the development of the personal computer and its associated software have radically changed the type of instrumentation that is now available for blasthole drills. Perhaps more important is what can be done with the data. The PC allows the logged data to be analysed, summarised, and a variety of reports to be generated. The reports can be customised to meet the specific requirements of the mine and reduce the amount of time that is required to interpret the data. There is also an increased awareness in the mining industry of the importance of production drills. Blasthole drills have typically been the piece of production equipment that received the least amount of attention in a surface mine. Management focussed on the trucks and shovels or draglines. This situation is changing, and therefore the benefits that can be derived from monitoring drill performance are being recognised. Potential economic benefits of installing drill monitors have been documented in previous papers (Peck and Vynne, 1992). Mines are finding that pay-back periods of less than twelve months and rates of return in excess of 30 per cent are not uncommon. These benefits include the following: 1. Reduced overdrilling; 2. Increased rate of penetration; 3. Helping to locate coal seams; 4. Identification of weak and strong zones; 5. Reduce geophysical logging; 6. Optimising blasts; 7. Improved fragmentation and diggability; 8. Decreased coal dilution; 9. Increased bit life; 10. Reduced maintenance costs; 1 I . Improved accuracy of data and reports.

Modem occupational health practice can be described as the fitting of work to the individual and each individual to his job; perhaps a non-traditional way to view occupational health. This two-component description is achieved through the development of programs to implement and monitor specific job procedures, from the monitoring of unwanted exposures to contaminants to the auditing of mine sites. This paper is about such programs. Some attempt must be made to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and several performance indicators which are intended to measure the effectiveness of such a program are offered.

The success of any industry depends on the planned integration of the policies and resources of the key components of the Australian economic and political structure - government, industry management, education, research, and the human resources of the industry. The Australian Mineral Industry, like Australia itself, has grown and developed at a rate not foreseen by many of our founding fathers and early industry leaders. Hence, now, as we approach the 21st Century, we need to re-think our approach to the significant new problems that are beginning to face both government and the Mineral Industry. Government initiatives, government information and support services, industry re-structuring, and research and development support, need to be carefully re-evaluated, re-diredted,. and strengthened, so that government, the community, and the Mineral Industry produce and receive the optimum education and research strategies and services. The support of academics and researchers, the development of facilities, and the design of new Courses for the future successful and beneficial exploitation of minerals need particular consideration.

Controlled Source Audio Magnetotelluric (CSAMT) surveys were carried out by Glass Earth (New Zealand) Limited (Glass Earth) in 2006 - 2007 to investigate epithermal gold targets in the central North Island of New Zealand. The surveys were conducted using a Zonge GDP 32 8-channels receiver and a Zonge XMT 32 transmitter powered by a 16 KW generator. The electric field dipole was maintained at 20 m length (five dipoles per 100 m spread) and the frequency ranged from 4 KHz to 4 Hz. Only scalar (TM mode) signals were recorded, using one magnetic coil per spread. The transmitter bipoles were 1 - 4 km in length and located about 5 to 10 km from each survey area.   Sixteen individual target areas were surveyed by June 2007. The CSAMT survey lines (100 - 400 m spacing) were determined mainly on results from previous ultra-detailed airborne magnetic and gravity surveys conducted by Glass Earth in 2005. The data from each CSAMT line was carefully examined to remove any spurious signals and processed using Zonge SCS2D software, which can produce smooth 2D resistivity inversions of the field data. The results were presented as resistivity sections and maps to help the identification of exploratory drilling targets, mainly from the existence of subsurface high resistivity zones (resistors) that can be interpreted as caused by silicification associated with epithermal mineralization.   An example of processing and interpretation of the CSAMT data is presented in this paper on results from Glass EarthÆs Tahunaatara target, where CSAMT surveys have identified zones of epithermal mineralization confirmed by exploratory drilling.

Mine operators have long recognised that the results achieved in primary blasting are critical to subsequent mining activities. With the introduction of "in the hole" drills under- ground and the advantages offered by the use of water gels in conjunction with ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives, new mining methods have been developed and enabled improvements in older methods. Pumpable water gels have been used with varying success underground. These gels allow a high loading density even in ragged bore- holes. The problems encountered with slumping in upholes is recognised so the current trend is to use these gels in downholes where wet holes are prevalent. Cartridged water gel technology has advanced to the point where it has allowed the replacement of nitroglycerin (NG) based explosives and pumpable water gels. Today, gels can be made as a tampable product for use in development headings or as a slump- ing product for downholes to give an effective coupling. With the introduction of the Tovex« pneumatic loaders, the problems associated with a pumpable gel were eliminated and gave the user the ability to alter his loading density.

The Hunter Valley Coal Preparation Plant and associated materials handling facilities commenced operation in mid 1982. The new plant and coal handling system were designed to integrate with existing mining and preparation plant operations, but also to be flexible to future mining and marketing developments. The system includes: raw coal stockpiles, a 900 tph dense medium/water washing cyclone preparation plant, clean coal stockpiles, a 7.8 km overland conveyor, large finished product stockpiles and a high capacity train loading plant.The plant's development is described with reference to the original planning objectives. Features aimed at providing operational flexibility and performance are emphasised, including the use of; automated stackers and reclaimers, modular plant, distributed PLC control, a single flight overland conveyor, a network of automatic samplers and blending options to assist quality control.Details are also provided of an innovative technique for control of reclaimer rail track forces, stacker and reclaimer anti-collision systems and the use of DC injection braking.

In April 2006, Orica Quarry Services undertook an investigation to determine the likely vibration and frequency response of three water storage tanks to quarry blasting, immediately adjacent to the tanks. Of the three tanks that were studied, two are relatively tall with a æwineglassÆ shape; one is constructed of steel (4 ML storage capacity) while the other is constructed of concrete (2 ML storage capacity). The third is a ground-embedded concrete tank that is relatively squat and broad in shape (38 ML storage capacity). A vibration limit of 25 mm/s and an acceleration limit of 0.16 g were imposed on the tanks. However, this report shows that this acceleration limit, whilst having relevance to low frequency earthquake motions, is quite inappropriate for the high frequency blast vibrations that are typical in a quarry blasting environment. The investigation involved firing 11 single blastholes of known charge weights and distances from the tanks, and measuring the tank vibration response using blast monitors placed on and around each tank. Analysis of the data collected from the cement tanks showed resonant responses over a broad range of frequencies, with dominant and lesser responses in vertical and lateral motion recorded at 9.8 Hz, 12 Hz, 16.8 Hz, 17 Hz, 31.3 Hz and 38.1 Hz. Unfortunately, most of the data collected on the steel tank was corrupted by noise due to electrical sources and/or mechanical sources such as the water agitator inside the tank. Advanced Monte Carlo vibration models were then constructed using the single blasthole information. Knowing the resonant frequencies enabled the modelling of electronic delay sequences for the reduction of resonant vibrations. Ultimately programmable and accurate electronic delay detonators were deemed essential to allow blasting in relatively close proximity to the tanks while avoiding resonant frequencies. Three blast designs were modelled, ranging in maximum instantaneous charge (MIC) from 4 kg to 22 kg, and 60 holes to 160 holes. The modelling showed that two of the designs (using small charge weights) could be used no closer than 71 m from the storage tanks. This is based on a 90 per cent confidence level of achieving vibration levels within the 0.16 g acceleration limit, even though the velocity levels predicted to be generated at this distance were significantly less than the 25 mm/s limit. The third design incorporated larger charge weights and could be used for blasting at distances no closer than 220 m from the tanks. The present work, conducted in an operating quarry, demonstrates the usefulness of Monte Carlo waveform superposition techniques for the control and reduction of ground vibration (either velocity or acceleration) under restrictive environmental constraints. However, a discussion is also presented to demonstrate that it is somewhat restrictive to impose an acceleration limit based on the motion produced by low frequency earthquakes rather than the motion produced by high frequency blast vibrations.

The Porgcra gold deposit is an epithermal gold base-metal deposit located in the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold-silver- spha le rite-galena-pyrite mineralization is related to stocks and dykes of dioritic composition which have intruded a series of folded marine sediments, mainly shales and siltstones, often with calcareous and carbon- aceous horizons, of middle Jurassic to middle Eocene age. The most intensely mineralized zone is at Waruwari Hill, where the mineralization occurs predominantly as massive mixed sulphide veins, and less frequently as quartz-chlorite veins and as disseminations. Mineralization occurs in all rock types and several phases of mineralization have been Recognized.

The general ranges of validity of some distribution functions are assessed from their behaviour with 119 sets of fragmentation data from bench blasting obtained by sieving. The emphasis is on determining the lower size/passing limit that the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler, Grady and Swebrec functions, and their bi-component versions, can represent with reasonable precision. By fitting these functions to the data using different weights, the accuracy of the fit varies in the different size/passing zones, so that an overall knowledge of the capacity of the function is obtained across the whole size range, from the coarse zone to the fines. Reasonable ranges of use of bimodal Rosin-Rammler and extended Swebrec (all of them five-parameter, bi-component distributions) are, in terms of percentage passing p, 99 > p > 2 per cent (up to 100 per cent for the extended Swebrec), or 90 > p > 0.5 per cent, in which the expected error of the calculated size is below 15 per cent in the extremes of the range, and less than five per cent in most of the central range; maximum errors (ie errors that will only rarely be exceeded) are typically less than 50 per cent in the central range, and up to about 100 per cent in the extremes. Ranges of use for the Swebrec and the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler (three-parameter distributions), with only slightly larger errors than the bi-components, are 100 > p > 5 per cent or 80 > p > 2 per cent. The classical two-parameter Rosin-Rammler can be used in the range 95 > p > 20 per cent or 90 > p > 10 per cent, with expected and maximum errors less than about 15 per cent and 100 per cent respectively.CITATION:Sanchidrián, J A, 2015. An automatic control system of a longwall roof support is dis-cussed. Hydraulic automatic control systems for longwall roof support have not met all requirements for such systems. Utilization of standard hydraulic elements to form a system that would-comply with all demands leads to a very complicated structure with a large number of hydraulic hoses within and between adjacent supports. So, only simplified systems have been made. This paper describes the multifunctional valve that per-mits realization of any desired logic functions, while maintaining a com-pact form, and analyses its application as a fully hydraulic automatic control system of a roof support.

Our ultimate resources come from the Sun and the Earth System. At this time we face a world crisis in energy, water and soil resources. Global pollution problems are increasing in almost all nations. There is an urgent need to use our vast knowledge with a new wisdom and this requires new integrated teams of experts to provide the best alternatives for the needed new development problems. These teams must include economists, engineers and a broad spectrum of scientists. Today it is possible to produce clean energy, stop soil erosion, clean water and reduce and use wastes of many types.

Coal slurry pumping was introduced into the U.K. in 1973. Gateside packs were prepared in areas of containment using R.O.M. coal and a special fast setting cement. The packs restricted roadway convergence and moderated spontaneous combustion risks, but costs were high and alternptives were sought. A similar system using OPC and an accelerator had limited success. Much more successful was the Aquapack process which used dilute slurries of a special OPC based cement and an accelerator based on sodium carbonate and bentonite pumped simultaneously into la fabric packbag. The Tekpak system using HAC and a much modified calcium sulphate mixture superceded Aquapack on the grounds of improved cement pumping life lower alkalinity and lower costs. A further modification of this system gave a cement with a 24 hour pumping life thus obviating flushing out pipe ranges except at the week-ends, improved packbags also increased the efficiency of the process. The hazard of spontaneous combustion can be inhibited if air supply channels across the waste can be located and plugged. Using gas samples from pack pipes to locate the heating and injecting a special grout, formulated from bentonite, sodium silicate and thixotroping agents. into the waste on the intake road has proved a successful method of controlling heatings. Mine' roadway and face cavities are being safely and successfully filled with cementitious foams produced in a novel placer machine. The foams are based on fast setting cements with specialised foaming agents. Up to 13 cu. metres per hour of fast setting thixotropic foams can be produced and their use is now widespread throughout U.K. coal mines.

The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Mt. Sisa Orebody on Misima Island, P.N.G., consists of gold-silver mineralization associated with massive carbonate and amor- phous iron-manganese oxides in fractures and breccia matrix. The orebody forms the north- ern extension of the Umuna deposit. The mineralization lies within the three kilometre strike length of a northwest trending, 300 metre wide, high angle fault zone. The fault zone structure is deeply oxidi- sed, with the manganiferous oxide material resulting from oxidation of carbonate. The wallrocks are metamorphosed basement psammopelites and basic volcanic rocks, exten- sively intruded by microgranodiorite. These are dominantly epidotized and sericitized. The precious metals are associated with anomalous Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, As, Ba, Ga, Sb, and. Mo. Many of the features of the Mt.Sisa mineralization are characteristic of volcanic- hosted epithermal deposits of western North' America. Lithologic and textural gradation is ob- served between the carbonate hydrothermal breccia-fill at Mt. Sisa, and the quartz domi- nated dilational fracture-fill mineralization which forms most of the Umuna deposit to the south. This gradational relationship is ana- logous to that within the Amethyst-OH vein system at Creede, Colorado, where it is shown to be indicative of deposition from laterally migrating fluids.

Universities have had a long history in the education of geology graduates, Analysis of this history reveals a record of success, as judged on a world basis. However there have been significant changes in the last 20 years that have impacted on the ability of universities to continue to provide their traditional style of geology education. These changes have increased in the last 10 years. In the teaching side, there has been a change in expectations. Additionally the increasing workload decreases the value of each academic to perform the tasks needed by the new education. In the area of research, the funds provided have continued to decline, in both real and absolute terms, and it is now necessary for universities to seek out funds to pay for their postgraduate research. Additionally, the universities have slipped into the error of what cahn only be termed "academic incest", and research student mobility has decreased to an undesirable level, stifling initiative and new ideas in a number of cases, The only solution is for Government monies to be "directed" - ie that the postgraduate student must leave his or her original university in order to receifve the research stipend/scholarship. On the government front, the government and its agencies have not adequately analysed and recognised the need for the redirection of education and research funds into the needy areas of science and technology, especially those that related to the minerals area.

In this year marking the centennial of the Geological survey of Western Australia, it is appropriate that we should review the value of the contribution of the Survey, and Australian Geological Surveys in general, to the exploration industry. Most geological surveys in Europe and North America had their origins in the first half of the 19th Century when the burgeoning Industrial Revolution was demanding the identification of new sources of coal and iron ore. Australia, as a young nation, essentially dependent on an agricultural and pastoral industry, and with already discovered vast coal resources in Eastern Australia, had, no great need to explore for new mineral resources. However, with the discovery of gold in 1851, the mineral potential of the country became apparent to the whole world and the first Geological Survey in Australia was set up in 1852 in Victoria under A.R.C. Selwyn. After a number of false starts all Australian States had an established Geological Survey by 1900. It is hard to assess the contemporary value of the early work of the Geological Surveys with respect to exploration, almost all major mineral discoveries were made by prospectors and most mining companies had little time for geologists - although the Chamber of Mines in Western Australia in 1910, did recommend that the Geological survey be granted an additional ten thousand pounds over two years to map all existing goldfields and the country between them, and produce a reconnaissance map of the area east of a line between Wiluna and Edjudina as far as the South Australian border!

CPeX is a non-ideal explosive performance prediction model. The model takes into account the rate of energy release, the extent of chemical reac- tion and the effect of confinement on energy release. The model resolves the explosive energy into `shock' and `heave' com- ponents as a function of explosive type, hole diameter and rock type. The predictions of the model are compared for a bulk emulsion, and a prill-doped bulk emulsion in soft rock. The predictions, based on calibra- tion of the model with simple unconfined detonation velocity measure- ments, show the significant effect of non-ideality on explosive Performance.
