MERLIN, the Queensland Department of Minerals and Energy's corporate geographic information system, provides ready access to all georeferenced data held by the department. Its aim is to provide a consistent, current, statewide coverage of timely information to assist in tenures management, exploration targeting and competing land use decision-making. Initially developed in 1988 and under continual enhancement since then, its functionality is the result of on-going close consultation with a wide range of departmental clients and potential users. A true geographic information system, MERLIN maintains both graphical data with linked textual information on a wide range of features of interest. The proprietary software products Arclnfo and Oracle are used to hold the graphics and attribute information respectively. Access to information is provided by a specially designed graphical user interface programed in-house. Hardcopy output of graphics displays including related attribute data as well as detailed reports of textual information can be retrieved at any departmental office. MERLIN is a network of computer systems which link each of the Department's regional offices and head office in Brisbane. The current state of exploration and mining is maintained by departmental officers processing tenure applications, transactions and dealings directly into the system. Data entered at regional offices are transferred overnight to head office to up-date central records and maintain a currency of data statewide as at the close of business the previous day. Through MERLIN the Department of Minerals and Energy now offers a much streamlined tenures management service as well as access to information about past exploration and mining, Queensland's mineral and energy occurrences and resources, and up-to-date information on the state's geology including maps, boreholes, geophysical surveys and field observations. In the future, this Geographic Information system will be invaluable to the mining industry in the development of mining projects.

A two-stage stochastic mixed integer non-linear program is formulated for a mining complex to optimise strategic and tactical plans. The objective is to find the near optimal decisions for a mineral supply chain in the context with uncertainties in both ore supply and the commodity market (price and demand). The endogenous spot price in the commodity market and long-term sales contracts are considered in the formulation of the mining complex’s optimisation model and an ad hoc heuristic is developed to deal with the throughput – and head-grade-dependent recovery rate in processing plants. Numerical results indicate that the proposed heuristic is effective and efficient in numerical tests. Based on the proposed model and heuristic, a long-term contract design strategy is proposed for making decisions on the contract price and strategic investments. Underground mining in the West Moreton coal field started in the 1870's. Subsidence related to coal mining activities is an ongoing problem facing planners and developers in the Ipswich area in South Eastern Queensland. The history of coal mining in the area over the last 110 years has left the legacy of periodic surface instability in several areas. In general, modern engineering analysis with current mining methods combine to create predicatable analysis of surface stability and movement. Where old workings using several variations of the bord and pillar system are affected by current activity, the predictibility of the surface movement is greatly reduced. Geological complexities further complicate the analysis. Mining and the related dewatering affects the stresses on pillars in old workings. This is caused by reducing buoyancy effects caused by changes in the water levels in old workings. Of particular relevance is the depth of workings and strength of the coal and overburden. The type of subsidence affecting the surface can range from localised pillar failure, to roof failure and potholing and the likelihood of the particular form of subsidence can be assessed from studying the workings in relation to the stratigraphy and structure of the coal measure Formations.

Permeability and air flow rate in the bed during iron ore sintering is crucial to controlling the sinter quality and productivity of a sinter plant due to its influence on the flame front speed. In the present work, the permeability of the bed during sintering was analysed by means of measured pressure drop and temperature at multiple points in the bed during sintering. Three different zones were categorised, ie humidified (green) bed, region of maximum resistance (high temperature zone) based on temperature, and sintered bed. Previous work has shown that the maximum pressure drop during sintering was due to several concurrent physico-chemical processes including dehumidification, calcination of fluxes, dehydroxylation of goethite, combustion of coke and melting of granules (>1200°C). To quantify the effect of the different process, sintering experiments were conducted in a milli-pot (diameter 53 mm, height 400 mm) with pressure and temperature measured at same location in bed. The milli-pot was fitted with four equidistant (80 mm apart) taps. Overall, five sections in the milli-pot were analysed for pressure drop at different times during sintering. It was found that in region of maximum resistance, coke combustion and flux calcination were highest contributors with ~35 per cent of the pressure drop when compared to other processes like de-humidification and goethite dehydroxylation which contributed to ~20 per cent and 25 per cent each respectively. The pressure drop contribution of the coke combustion region increased with increasing coke addition rate.

A review of ground control procedures in Western Australian underground mines is presented. Geotechnical input into initial mine design and methods of ground control is rare. As a result, the frequency of unexpected rockfalls is comparatively high, with over three quarters of the mines adopting non-specialist ground control designs experiencing unexpected falls-of-ground. In contrast, mines that provide some level of specialist input into initial ground control design experience decreased rockfall frequencies.

Two types of low sulphidation epithermal deposits that have different gangue mineralogies and ore shoot geometries are recognised. One has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a significant vertical interval that consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, minor base metal sulphides and adularia, with electrum. The other type of deposit has discrete near-vertical ore shoots of a lesser vertical extent, that consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, sulphosalts, electrum and in their upper parts barite, which are enclosed in veins of earlier quartz. The gold mineralisation in both deposit types is considered to be a co-precipitate of pyrite, with that in the first type of deposit produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system (Upflow Deposits); an example is Waihi in New Zealand. The other type is produced by mixing, a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an iron-bearing oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow of a hydrothermal system (Outflow Deposits); an example is Thames in New Zealand. Early recognition of these different types of deposits can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value on which to focus exploration drilling. Early recognition of an Upflow Deposit promotes an extensive program to delineate the extension of the main ore shoot. In contrast recognition of an Outflow Deposit requires a more intensive approach to find individual ore shoots which, although smaller than those found in Upflow Deposits, may be high-grade, particularly if there is earlier mineralisation present to act as a protore.

Ora Banda Gold Mine is located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. Mining is carried out underground by sublevel open sloping resulting in large open stopes. A Mass Blast of approximately 250 000 tonnes was carried out in July 1994 to recover a rib pillar between two stopes, and the crown pillar between the underground mine and the abandoned open pit above. Strategic development within 50 m of the blast consisted of two ventilation shafts and the main decline. This development required careful design and prediction of the blast results. This paper describes the design of the blast, the prediction of the likely effects, the measures taken to reduce the risk to important development, and the results of the blast.

The Oregon-Idaho graben evolved after widespread Uwleiitic flood basalt volcanism associated with the arrival of the plume head of the Yellowstone hotspot beneath southeastern Oregon approximately 17-16 Ma. The north- to north- northeast-trending, 50 km-wide graben evolved between 15.5 and 10.5 Ma during east-west extension. The graben is part of a middle Miocene back-arc rift (1,100 km long) that includes the northern Nevada rift, the Baker and LaGrande grabens, and the Chief Joseph dike swarm of the Columbia River Basalt Group. The graben ceased to be a volcano- tectonic depression as the cross-cutting western Snake River plain began to evolve at approximately 10.5 Ma.

The ores described in this paper are from the two principal orebodies at Wiseman's Creek, a small village about 22 miles south-east of Bathurst in central-western New South Wales.The first official reference to mining at Wiseman's Creek is in "Mineral Statistics of New South Wales" of 1875, which reported that the Wiseman's Creek Copper Mining Company had proved a lode-later known as "North Wiseman's"-to a depth of 120 ft., where it was found to be 20 ft. wide. By 1876 the erection of a mill and smelting works had commenced, and the sulphide ore found to contain copper lead, zinc, silver and gold. Some oxidised ore was also being worked. Operations were, however, generally unsuccessful, and sporadic work up until 1907 produced only about 5,000 tons of ore. The other more important orebody of the locality-the Phoenix-was not opened until about 1895. By 1908, as reported by J. E. Carne, the shaft had been sunk 340 ft., with the extraction of both oxidised and primary ore. At the time of the slump in copper, pric'es in 1907 approximately 3,000 tons of, ore had been produced.Several smaller orebodies were discovered and worked during the same period as the North Wiseman's and Phoenix, but their output was more or less insignficant. THE OREBODIES AND THEIR GEOLOGICAL SETTINGIt is now impossible to examine the orebodies underground, but they appear to have formed a series of flat lenses, whose major axes were parallel to ,the foliation of the enclosing quartz-chlorite-muscovite schists. The largest ,of these lenses was worked as the North Wiseman's orebody, which was reported by Carne to vary in width from 1 ft. to 20 ft., and which probably extended discontinuously over a strike length of about 1,000 ft. The Phoenix orebody is stated to have varied from 1 ft. 6 in. to 3 ft. in width...

Structural Controls Interpretation of regional aeromagnetics, radiometrics and satellite image data has identified three structural domains (fig 2): The Fairyland Domain: a general N - S structural trend. The Cracow Domain: a general NW - SE structural trend. The Bald Mountain Domain: a general N- S structural trend. Known mineralisation is confined to the Cracow Domain in which there occurs two major NW - SE trending fault zones. The Cracow Fault Zone (CFZ) and the Immy Creek Fault Zone (ICFZ). Enhanced detail of the CFZ (fig 3) shows three main structural trends within it: NW-SE structures which include the mineralised White Hope South fault zone and the Golden Mile fault zone. NE-SW structures which have an influence on mineralisation in the Orange Creek, Fernyside and Golden Plateau areas. N-S structures comprising several major structural zones.

Testwork carried out in the cooling water circuit at the Yabulu treatment plant of the Greenvale Joint Venturers (Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. and Freeport Queensland Nickel Incorporated) since 1980 has resulted in significant improvements to both fouling and corrosion control. At the same time corrosion inhibitor costs have been reduced.Acrylate-type silt dispersants were identified as the most effective means of sediment control in the circuit. An increase in the cathodic component of the corrosion inhibitor coupled with a relatively minor adjustment to water pH has yielded a two to three fold reduction in corrosion rate. It has been established that these lower corrosion rates can be sustained in the face of a 20% reduction in corrosion inhibitor addition rate. Further improvements are indicated with a change of raw water algicide.

In June 1992, the High Court of Australia recognised native title of the Meriam people over parts of the Mer Island in the Torres Strait as a form of common law. The Court also indicated that native title may have survived European settlement of the mainland Australia where it had not been extinguished by Governments and Aboriginal people have maintained their traditional connection with the land. Blasting, particularly bench blasting, uses finite length cylinders of explosive close to two free faces. The rock to be blasted is usually intersected by a complex 3-D system of joints. To fully simulate a blast, a 3-D dynamic model is required. It is shown that the static stress distribution around a long cylinder can be reproduced by superposing the static stress distribution of a suitable chain of spheres. Thus, the dynamic results for individual spheres given by Favreau (1969) can now be substituted for the static results to give a dynamic model of the stress distribution around a long cylinder. Comparison of measured and computed waveforms show that the measured waveforms are much more attenuated and dispersed than expected. The consequences for explosive evaluation and design are Discussed.

The microstructures exhibited by ilmenite in its association with other oxide minerals have been the subject of a number of papers, the most comprehensive of which is that by Ramdohr. The following observations in some degree extend his conclusions. They are based upon a study of about sixty specimens of "massive" ilmenite and titaniferous ores from a number of wIdely 'scattered Australian localities. Specimens of this character proved much rarer than was expected. The combination of shot-firing and stage loader, and a prop and bar support system is an accepted drivage method. The support configuration is based on the final prop density, and assumes relitively uniform load sharing between the props. During the development of a longwall faceline at a medium depth (approximately 600m) British coal mine using such a drivage method, a fall occured overnight, effectively closing approximately 40m of the drivage. The severity and speed of the fall prompted an investigation into the performance of the temporary support system installed prior to chock installation. This paper deals with the investigation which disclosed some major contributory factors towards loss of strata control.

BHP's newest colliery on the Southern Coalfield Is Tower Colliery. It is situated near Wilton some 60 kms south west from Sydney. It commenced its operations in 1978 and since that time has experienced considerable roof problems. In its eight years of operations, production has been 936 687 tonnes to December 1985. To a certain extent this is a reflection of the ground control r,,b1cros present in the colliery. paper out Iines the signif mt g,, logical features that are known to exist in the colliery and their influence on roadway development. Faulting has hindered the mine's development and an igneous intrusion has had outhursting associated with it. The prevailing roof rock has also had an impact on the roadway conditions. The paper will look at intersection deformation in present workings. Extensometers have been installed in these areas and provide measurements to verify visual observations. The results show a significant increase in roof movement as the roadway is developed from a single heading, to a T-intersection and then Into a four-way intersection.
