In conjunction with Orica Explosives, Worsley Alumina have managed a program of continuous improvement to their cap rock blasting over the last two years. Blasting conditions are challenging because of the hard and shallow nature of the material. Blasting costs must be controlled and the environmental consideration of noise and dust is critical. Worsley have sought to determine the optimum balance between drilling and blasting costs and fragmentation. As the cap rock has few inherent weaknesses, loader productivity is strongly controlled by the degree of fragmentation from blasting. The optimum blasting solution is also constrained by maintaining airblast levels at the surrounding residences below 115 dBL . The major blast design parameters optimised during the program were stemming type, stemming length, powder factor and blasthole diameter. A series of carefully managed trial blasts were fired during 1997 and 1998 to quantify the effect of these parameters. Fragmentation was digitally measured using OricaÆs Powerseive G technique. Shovel productivity, airblast levels and blasting costs were also quantified. As a result of the project, Worsley now have an increased knowledge of the key parameters driving blast performance, and their consequent impact on downstream processes, the environment and total mining cost.

Hydrogen and oxygen isotopic constraints on hydrothermal fluid composition from the Pliocene Boyongan and Bayugo porphyry copper-gold deposits (southern Philippines ) reveal mixing of magmatic and sea water reservoirs as the hydrothermal system evolved. Magmatic-equilibrated fluids (d18O: +8.3ë to +9.1ë; dD: -61ë to -51ë) are represented by hypersaline brines implicated in copper-gold transport and deposition. These dominate the fluid inclusion assemblage in early comb-quartz (unidirectional solidification textures), miarolitic quartz, and in K-silicate-stage quartz-K-feldspar ¦ biotite veins. Fluids responsible for post-K-silicate alteration assemblages of pyrite-clay (illite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite), alunite and smectite are represented by low-moderate salinity two-phase inclusions in co-existing quartz. These are interpreted as mixtures of evolved magmatic fluids (d18O dD: -42ë to -20ë) with evolved Pliocene sea water (d18O: + 4.0ë; dD: +4ë). The isotopic evidence for sea water involvement in the hydrothermal system suggests that porphyry emplacement and associated diatreme formation could have occurred in a submarine setting. Newmont Australia Limited has for some 15 years mined a number of large open cuts associated with the Telfer Gold Dome deposits. The principal ore body exploited has been the East Flank of the Main Dome where a very high grade gold reef deposit of mixed metal sulphides, grades in excess of 20gA Au, has been mined in conjunction with dissemi- nated mineralisation contained in the overburden material. The main ore body has been under review for some years as an under- ground mine, however due to the ore body widths of less than 1 metre and a dip generally less than 35 degrees and a very weak host rocks earlier studies all resulted in a continuation of open pit mining activities. In early 1988 it was recognised that open cast mining would not be able to mine all of this valuable resource and a feasibility study was commenced to come up with a practical and economic approach to underground mining.

A residue storage facility (RSF) was designed to cater for Davidson Creek Area and Robertson Range Area operations under the FerrAus Pilbara iron ore development project in the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. Annual ore production was about 15 million tonnes over a period of up to 15 years. The RSF was designed to handle a tailings production rate of 2.2 Mt/a over the project life with ability to be expanded at a later date. The composition of tailings was predominantly -45 ¦ material with some spiral reject material. The fraction of solids was expected to be between 40 per cent and 50 per cent solids by weight.The RSF was designed as an above ground storage facility, integrating with a mine waste dump planned close to the selected RSF site. This integration helped to increase the stability of the RSF embankment and to reduce the construction cost. The main source of construction material for the remaining part of the RSF embankment was selected to be mine waste. The RSF was designed to be constructed in stages by considering the availability of mine waste according to the mining schedule. The use of mine waste for construction of RSF embankments has several benefits over use of borrowed material. These include less construction costs and less disturbances to the environment, by minimising borrowed areas and waste dump footprints.CITATION:Wanninayake, A, Novello, E and Gillani, I, 2013. Andean countries (Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina) have 42 semi-autogenous mills (SAG) in operation and there are more than 30 projects in the pipeline that consider SAG mills. At the end of the next decade, the total amount of SAG mills in this area will likely be close to 100.There is a lot of reliable operational information collected by JRI Ingenieria Sociedad Anonima, the author’s engineering company, for more than 20 years and processed by statistical software, to be used as a reference for design basis of future projects or to improve operations by comparison. JRI Ingenieria Sociedad Anonima has reliable information related to the performance of more than 50 per cent of the Andean SAG plants.The paper presented considers a set of graphs that summarise the collected and verified SAG plants technical data. The figures will show key parameters as circuits and equipment data, energy consumption, technical availability, utilisation rates, throughput variability, pebble productions, steel consumption and others.The data is compared with typical design basis of several engineering companies and the main differences are analysed and/or commented on.CITATION:Rayo, J, 2014. This paper was prepared and translated from the final report of the investigation into the Codelco Chile Salvador DivisionÆs air blast which occurred in the Inca-West area. In this section of the block cave mine, a stable arch formed covering an area of approximately 15 000 m2 . This zone subsequently collapsed producing a massive air blast. The collapse followed a series of planned extraction activities and occurred on 5 December 1999. This paper discusses the cave back arching event and the measures that were taken in order to induce the controlled collapse. This was to minimise risk to personnel, equipment and installations. The results obtained to date are presented.

Currently there are large reserves of good quality iron ore near to existing infrastructure that are not being developed because the phosphorous levels are above acceptable market specifications. Since the high phosphorous content is considered to be mainly associated with the goethite fractions of the ore, attempts were made to leach the phosphorous from the ore after a heat treatment to dehydroxylate the goethite. Heating the ore and leaching with 40 g/L NaOH lowered the phosphorous levels from 0.145 wt per cent P to 0.075 wt per cent P or lower, but a heating temperature over 800¦C was required to achieve this reduction in phosphorous levels. However, when sodium hydroxide was added to the iron ore before the heat treatment, similar phosphorous removal was achieved with a heating temperature of 300 - 350¦C. It was considered that dehydroxylation of the goethite in the presence of the hydroxide makes the phosphorous available for removal with a water leach. As well, 50 per cent of the silica and 60 per cent of the alumina in the ore were also removed in the leach, but some sodium remained in the leach product. Further work is required to remove the residual sodium to produce a marketable product.

A new lead refinery with a. capacity of 230,000 tons per year com-menced operation at*Port'Plsie in October, 1959. This plant' superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of thecontinuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content, created difficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was under-taken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic'zinc is now recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is then carried out by batch'treatinent with caustic soda yield-ing lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes have replaced continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. As the final stage is a .batch process the product composition can be.checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to,consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment has allowed the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs. This, together with the high purity of the lead, has assured the B.H.A.S. position in world markets.Automatic control systems have been extensively employed particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.

It is well understood that designers and constructors must protect the existing surroundings of tunnel construction, particularly in the selection of excavation methods, ground support and waterproofing systems. However, while this can readily address the existing conditions, the tunnel owner and the designers need to consider the changes that are likely to occur during the life of the tunnel. It is typical for transport infrastructure to have a design life of at least a century. While the effects of constructing the tunnel on its surroundings are a short-term effect, the converse case, the protection of the tunnel, and the need to maintain its integrity, will affect developments over and adjacent to the tunnels beyond the foreseeable future. Decisions made during the design phase have the potential either to facilitate development or to hinder it for the long term.Examples principally from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong show that the provision for future development is addressed in different ways. These have ranged from making no specific provision, putting the onus onto developers to ensure that the tunnels are not affected adversely, to including a loading allowance for future development in the performance specification or contract documents for a tunnel project.These two contrasting approaches have strong points and risks. A highly prescriptive definition of permissible loadings around the tunnel can provide unambiguous guidance for the approving authority and the developer, but runs the risk of being overly conservative to allow for all the envisaged works, while still missing a detrimental combination of effects that theoretically complies with the specified requirements. In contrast, a general requirement to not cause detriment is open to interpretation and potentially difficult negotiations to reach agreement between the tunnel owner/operator and developer and finally the appointed contractor (probably with no contractual relationship with the tunnel owner).In practice, a combination of prescriptive and performance requirements is likely to provide the optimum combination of clarity and flexibility. In order that the processes seen may be followed in their proper 'order, the subject will be dealt with as follows, (1) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines; (2) Wallaroo and Moonta Mines Smelting Works; (3) Broken Hill Mines; (4) Concentration at Broken Hill; (5) Smelting and refining of Lead, Silver, and Gold at Port Pirie. The first acquaintance with the copper region was made at the Yelta shaft and dressing mill of the Parramatta Copper Mines Co. at Moonta. The country rock at Moonta is a hard, tough, felsitic porphyry, the copper lodes having a general strike of N. 30° Kilipping from 500 to 70°. This necessitates shaft-sinking on the lode, and underlay shafts are the rule on the field. The ore is raised in the Yelta shaft in wheeled skips, and consists of ·chalcopyrite, bornite, pseudomorphic hematite, containing, in addition, molybdenite and tourmaline. The ore from the bins at the brace is passed over a grizzly; the over-size is hand-picked into smelting ore, concentrating ore, and waste rock (00 attle ), which is sent below for filling. The under-size is elevated to a trommel having in. holes. The over-size falls on to a picking belt made up of lengths of rope strapped with iron, working over wooden pulleys.

The R70 test is a good indicator of coal reactivity to oxygen and is commonly used to provide a rating of propensity for self-heating. Tests performed by The University of Queensland Spontaneous Combustion Testing Laboratory have resulted in the development of a large database that shows the impact of coal quality on this parameter. From these results it is possible to infer an R70 value, which can be used to gain an appreciation of the intrinsic coal reactivity before it is even tested. However, any interpretation of R70 values must consider the influences of coal rank, mineral matter and moisture content to provide a better understanding of the spontaneous combustion risk of a particular coal.

Morning Star Gold aims to enter the ranks of Australia's gold producers, revitalising the Eastern Victorian Goldfi elds in the second half of 2010 - the fi rst gold production in around 50 years from the Morning Star Gold mine, which was once Australia's largest under WMC. This presentation will outline the redevelopment of the Morning Star Gold Mine from exploration to production. Morning Star Gold NL's (MCO) key project area is centred at the historic mining town of Woods Point and nearby Matlock (to the southeast) and Gaffney's Creek (to the northwest), all of which are located in the lower part of the Victorian Alps roughly 60 kms south of Mansfield. Morning Star has literally numerous historic mines and gold bearing 'dykes' on its tenements, many with a rich production history of high-grade gold from quartz reefs and alluvial sources. The area encompassing the Woods Point goldfi eld and the multiple high-grade gold bearing dyke structures located north towards Jamieson and south towards Walhalla formed one of the most significant mining fields in Australian history. Historical gold production was at least 155 t or around six million ounces of over a century of mining with an average production grade exceeding 27 g per tonne. The bulk of this recorded production came from just a handful of mines and of those only three were mined to any great depth. One of the key historical production hubs in this area was the famous 'Morning Star' mine, which is situated adjacent to Woods Point township. The Morning Star mine produced almost one million ounces at 27 grams per tonne, operating fairly continuously between 1861 and 1959 with a break after Jan 1939 due to the devastating 'Black Friday' bush fi res across eastern Victoria. During the early 1940s, the Morning Star was Australia's biggest gold mine. The Morning Star mine along with Walhalla ensured that this goldfield was third behind Bendigo and Ballarat as Victoria's biggest hardrock gold production centre. Morning Star Gold has rebuilt its 100 per cent owned 'Morning Star' mine with a view to producing gold in the second half of 2010. Morning Star is exploring its regional dykes in order to estimate an overall gold endowment and rank local production sources to feed its proposed mill at the Morning Star mine site. Key initial targets (all within 11 kms of the Morning Star mine) are the Waverly, All Nations, Rose of Denmark, Hunts, Wallaby and Loch Fyne dykes, all of which historically produced high grade gold, much of it gained from only shallow workings above the water table in the weathered zone of rocks. Historically the Morning Star mine was developed over 24 levels to a depth of 940 m via one large vertical shaft and a smaller, deeper inclined shaft at the 1900 feet level underground. At present MCO has dewatered and completely refurbished all infrastructure to the ten level (~310 m below surface). MCO knows there are a number of substantially under-explored and undeveloped or partially developed but not stoped areas within the Morning Star mine. As a result, MCO has been carrying out extensive channel sampling and an underground diamond drilling program targeting areas of the mine that were largely unexplored and undeveloped by the last operators of the mine - Western Mining Corp Ltd (Gold Mines of Australia). Four thousand, fi ve hundred pages of archival WMC records have helped the cause significantly. The shaft refurbishment and reconstruction stage is complete. This has been a program that originally commenced back in 1993 and has cost around $22 M. This refurbishment paved the way for the extensive underground resource focused diamond drilling program, which MCO completed in 2008 with two company-owned and operated drill rigs from drill cuddies on level 9 (900 feet underground) of the mine. This drilling, which encountered some stunning grades intersections and multiple visible gold hits, has outlined further production opportunities including 0.4 m @ 1392 g/t Au (MS 410). Metallurgical testing conducted by Gekko Systems of samples obtained from the exploration program found gravity concentration and a leach circuit gave recoveries of ~95 per cent to 99 per cent, or ~92 per cent from gravity alone at a coarse crush (300 ¦m). Currently, the plan is to use gravity to fi rstly produce dore bars on-site from the free milling gold and secondly a saleable concentrate for CIL processing off-site. A purpose built 10 t/h (~80 000 t/a) gravity treatment plant was subsequently ordered from Gekko and is expected to be installed onsite and commissioned in the Q3 2010. The plant features fi ne crushing with a vertical shaft impactor, followed by gold concentration by inline pressure jig, inline spinner and Wilfley table. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. It is well known that the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) can only be operated efficiently under choke feeding conditions in which a material bed is built up between the rollers to ensure interparticle breakage. By increasing the fines amount in the material bed up to a specific level with the recycling load, a uniform material bed is created and higher pressure gradient along the roller width is obtained which results in compact flakes including more fines. Extensive test work has been carried out with an industrial HPGR unit grinding cement clinker in a cement plant in Turkey. During the test work the recycling load of the circuit was changed to achieve different ratios to the fresh feed rate in order to identify the effect of the recycling load on the circuit performance. Six different tests were performed with the circuit at steady state. For each test, samples were collected from HPGR fresh feed and discharge, and total feed, then the particle size distributions of the samples were determined and mass balances around the circuit were calculated. The conclusion was that the reduction ratio of the HPGR increased with increase in recycling load. The flake densities showed the same trend with more compacted flakes being produced for higher recycling loads.

The Lane Cove Tunnel (LCT) is an important infrastructure link in New South Wales (NSW) and runs from the end of the Gore Hill Freeway at Artarmon at its eastern extremity, to the end of the M2 at North Ryde at its western extremity.  The LCT is 3.6 km long and generally consists of twin two/three lane unidirectional tunnels running largely under Epping Road from just east of Mowbray Road, west to the western end of the Gore Hill Freeway. The tunnel opened in early 2007. The presentation will provide a summary of the traffic and emission modelling performed for selected representative surface road sections in the vicinity of the Lane Cove Tunnel. An assessment of the predicted impact of vehicle emissions on ambient air quality in the corridor as a result of changed traffic conditions due to the tunnel opening will be presented. The traffic modelling and emission calculations were undertaken for the following two scenarios: Year 2006 û Lane Cove Tunnel no-build option, and Year 2006 û Lane Cove Tunnel build option. Vehicle emission calculations for the four main pollutants from vehicles: CO, VOC, NOx and PM10 on the surface roads in the vicinity of the Lane Cove Tunnel were performed using the predicted daily traffic for the two cases (no-build and build). The analyses indicated that the vehicle emissions for all pollutants are expected to significantly reduce in the corridor with the building of the Lane Cove Tunnel, including the areas in the vicinity of all tunnel portals, when compared to vehicle emissions for the no-build case.  As a result of the decreased vehicle emissions on the surface roads, the study concluded that the actual ambient air quality is expected to improve in the corridor including the tunnel portal areas after the Lane Cove Tunnel opening.

The Pilbara region, located in the north-west of Western Australia, is significant as the second-largest source of iron ore on the planet. Iron ore mines owned and operated by Pilbara Iron are located within the Hamersley Basin. This paper refers to the Greater Paraburdoo mines, the 4WEST and 4EAST pits, located on the southern margin of the Hamersley Basin. The groundwater model refers to ephemeral watercourses: Seven Mile and Pirraburdoo creeks, which are adjacent to the two pits, and Ratty Springs, located upstream from 4WEST and within Pirraburdoo creek. The spring and creeks hold cultural heritage significance for local Aboriginal communities. Two of these, the Gobawarrah Minduarra Yinhawanga (GMY) and Innawonga native title claim groups, initiated hydrological work on the two creeks and Ratty Springs, with the aim of determining the affects of dewatering on the natural water flows of these systems. The numerical model used to simulate drawdown in the Pirraburdoo and Seven Mile Creeks was derived from PMWIN Pro software and covered an area of 77 km2. The modelling period was from January 1998 to December 2004, and the prediction period was from January 2005 to December 2015. The model has four layers and incorporated effects caused by mining voids, 4WEST and 4EAST pits, creek bed material, weathered bedrock below creeks and surrounding banded iron formations (BIF). The model has been calibrated using the trial-and-error method set down by Middelmis et al (2001). The current dewatering schedule (12 ML/day) in the 4WEST and 4EAST mining areas does not affect the water table levels in the adjacent creeks significantly or for any considerable periods of time. However, changes to mine plans may occur, for example, in response to changed commodity price and may lead to significant increase in rates of vertical advancement. This, in turn, affects dewatering schedules, as greater vertical advancement requires increased dewatering effort. When an accelerated mine plan is applied to the model and dewatering rates increased to 18 ML/day, drawdowns in the creeks are more noticeable. The model has therefore helped to indicate the extent to which increased dewatering rates may be acceptable, especially in terms of immediate and longer-term damage to riparian species, ie Melaleuca and Eucalypt. Predictions from the model may also allow mine planners to schedule decreased rates of vertical advancement, where these are required to meet environmental constraints.

A method of selective gold recovery from black sands has been elaborated which is based on the liquid phase low temperature chlorination of materials. A liquid agent mixture of sulphur monochloride S2C12 and sulphur dichloride SC12 is used. This method ensures the gold extraction either in the state of AuC13.SC14 complex salt solution or as metal. The kinetics and main physico-chemical parameters of the process (eg density, solid: liquid ratio, temperature) have been investigated. The materials investigated were quartz-insipid ride samples with low sulphur and high iron (up to 70 per cent Fe2O3) contents. Gold recovery is 96 - 99 per cent at temperatures not exceeding 100¦C. Most of the associated minerals remain in the cake. To obtain metallic gold, the resulting solution of the AuC13.SC14 salt after leaching is reduced by hydrazine with subsequent annealing. The elaborated method is remarkable for small energy expenditures owing to low process temperature and a high gold dissolution rate. The solution of sulphur chlorides and other reagents are used in closed cycle.

Research cruises dedicated to seafloor hydrothermal activity along the Kermadec arc first began with the Sonne-135 expedition in 1998. This was followed by the worldÆs first systematic survey for venting along an arc during the 1999 NZAPLUME I expedition. Since then, cruises dedicated to mapping plumes along the Kermadec arc include NZAPLUME II (2002), NZAPLUME III (2004) and ROVARK (2007). In addition, the manned submersible cruises SWEEP Vents (2004) and NZASRoF (2005) utilised the Shinaki 6500 and Pisces V, respectively, to sample in detail select hydrothermalsystems for mineralised samples, rocks and vent fluids. The ROVARK (2007) cruise was the first to deploy an autonomous underwater vehicle (ABE) along the arc which surveyed Brothers volcano at a far greater resolution than had been done previously by ships on the sea surface. While these expeditions have largely been led by GNS Science, together with its collaborators from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (NOAA/PMEL), significant contributions have been made by other groups from various nations, exemplifying the global interest in seafloor hydrothermal activity associated with intraoceanic arcs. In this paper, three types of value-adding in the minerals industry are discussed: downstream processing, improving the efficiency of existing processing and increasing the knowledge base and expertise of the staff. It is shown that, while downstream processing seems to offer a good way of improving Australia's trade position, there are a number of impediments to such development, notably, limited access to the appropriate technology and overseas markets. Transport costs can also be a problem. To reverse the situation will require more positive policies by government. In the meantime, something can be done towards adding value by increasing the efficiency of existing processes. Examples are given, showing how it might be possible to make economies in reagent costs in the gold industry, how innovative technology has led to more complete processing of a tailings dump, how research might lead to an increase in the throughput in the production of synthetic rutile and how it is possible to leach selectively from gold/copper ores.

Owing to their complexity, many metallurgical processes are difficult to model fundamentally, and as a result more attention has been focused on the use of artificial intelligence techniques to simulate these processes. In this paper recent advances in the use of neural nets to model processes not amenable to conventional methods are discussed. These include the application of a new modelling methodology based on the use of neural nets for the dynamic simulation of metallurgical processes, the use of conventional techniques in conjunction with neural nets to simulate gravity separation circuits, as well as the detection of gross errors in variable measurements by means of a neural net representation of the relation between measurement and constraint residuals.
