Banded Iron Formations or more commonly known as BIF are sedimentary rock formations with alternating silica-rich layers and iron-rich layers that are mainly composed of iron oxides (hematite and magnetite), iron-rich carbonates, and/or iron-rich silicates. Considering the depletion of highgrade iron ore reserves in South Africa, there is a need to maximise resource utilisation through the exploitation of low-grade/uneconomic resources particularly BIF material, which makes up more than 65 per cent of current reserves. Previous test work conducted by alternative BIF sources globally indicates the need for fines processing in order to produce a concentrate. South African BIF however is amenable to coarse and fines processing producing an on-grade product or blended feedstock. C-Type material within South Africa’s Northern Cape Province grading at approximately 33 per cent Fe was supplied for research purposes. Top size optimisation via gravity Heavy Liquid Separation (HLS) tests was conducted. The laboratory results being perfect separation (Ep=0) were modelled to predict pilot performance, the results of which were tested on a pilot scale for the finest size fraction (-1 mm). It was observed that a top size of -2 mm provided optimum results in terms of upgrade and recovery, with crushing finer not necessarily producing superior results. At a target grade of 60 per cent Fe, recoveries of 65.6 per cent were achieved on the laboratory scale, whilst recoveries of approximately 58 per cent were achieved on the pilot scale. Targeting higher upgrades of 63 per cent would inevitably result in lower recoveries of 57.2 per cent on a laboratory scale and approximately 54 per cent on a pilot scale. This is in line with grades and recoveries achieved globally for BIF material albeit at finer grind sizes.

The æMountain Camp reefÆ at Alford's mine, Wakamarina,Marlborough, had no recorded gold production although assays of 5 - 26 g/t were reported, but it did produce c. l000 kg of scheelite. The lode consists of a lower massive quartz layer, and upper, cm-banded, ribboned quartz layers, and has a very low sulphide content. Within the massive layer, relict early fine-grained mosaic quartz with idioblastic scheelite is surrounded by recrystallised granoblastic coarse-grained quartz with calcite and plagioclase, in which an original ribbon banding texture is mimiced by strings of tiny inclusions. In both the banded and massive layers, rounded quartz grains, created by cataclastic milling of grain margins and along syn-vein fractures, have been partially annealed within later quartz overgrowths. Late fibrous quartz and calcite fill brittle cross fractures.   Deformation events D1 and D2 are associated with mid-late Jurassic metamorphism of the Pelorus Group, D2 producing the main regional schistosity (S2, and the earliest scheelite. D3 is an extensional mylonitic shear event that formed the dominant schistosity in Alford's mine (S3). The quartz lode was emplaced within the mylonite by a series of individual dilation pulses (D4). The D5 event caused crenulation of the S3 mylonite, kink banding and chevron folding of the S2 schist and S3 mylonite, and reverse faulting, rodding and cross-fracturing with late fibrous quartz-calcite veining of the D4 quartz lode.   Fluid influxes during successive dilations of D4 fractures progressively caused recrystallisation of earlier quartz bands on the footwall, annealing and recrystallisation of quartz along milled crystal margins and fractures, and deposition of minor sulphides. There was thus a dynamic interplay between fault dilation, lode fracture, fluid influx, lode band deposition, and lode recrystallisation. The past decade hap seen revolutionary advances in com-munications and information-handling techniques which have been stiriulated by "cold war" military requirements and by, current programmes for probing into outer space: The tools used in exploration for petroleum and minerals have been improved significantly as a result of this new space age technology and even greater improvements are on the way.Two areas of technical activity have been particularly fruitful in enhancing the effectiveness of exploration, methods. These are (1) The development of new approaches, based on information theory, for extracting signal from noise more efficiently than before, and (2) The use of high-speed digital computers for storing and processing all kinds of exploration information, not only geophysical but geological as well.In seismic prospecting, use of information theory has led to new techniques such as time-domain filtering, wave-number filtering and correlation methods which have made it possible to obtain usable reflection data from areas which were previously considered NR. Complex playback and other data processing facilities have been developed to apply these approaches.

Gravity methods of recovering alluvial gold are not very efficient at particle sizes below about 0.1mm. Whereas such gold may not have been economic to recover in the past, the same may not be true today. Centrifugal concentrators, like the Knudsen and Knelson bowls, are showing promise after an inauspicious start, at least in New Zealand. The large proportion of heavy mineral in many auriferous beach sands and the natural hydrophobicity of fine gold should make flotation an attractive contender for its recovery. The conventional mechanical flotation cell is effective, but roughing, scavenging and cleaning are necessary to achieve both high recovery and low mass yield. More problematic is the difficulty of maintaining coarse and dense sands in suspension. The air sparged hydrocyclone is effective at recovering fine gold from a fine Colarado River sand, but is not effective for the coarse and dense beach sands of New Zealand. The flotation column shows much promise for these sands, when recoveries of over 80% and mass yields of less than 1% can be achieved in a single pass. The froth separator of the USSR and flash flotation could also be worthy contenders. It is felt that flotation could be limited to naturally and artificially de-slimed concentrates.

Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. Case studies are presented for a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided.The auditing process as described here for coal mines, and coal handling and preparation plants, is equally applicable to the processing of other mineral ores, metalliferous mines, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

Goodenough and Fergusson Islands, in eastern PapuaNew Guinea, lie in an area of crustal extension on the western end of the Woodlark Basin seafloor spreading system. The islands are made up of a number of mountainous domes of complexely deformed basement, and these are intruded by large bodies of granodiorite. The domes are bounded by curved shear zones and faults dipping outwards at angles of around 25 to 45¦. The cores of the domes contain lower crustal rocks of eclogite and granulite facies, these rocks have undergone retrograde metamorphism in the outer sheared zones. Movement indicators on the shear zones indicate a complex moverm.-It geometry which does not fit the models proposed by earlier workers. These dome-like structures are similar to the metamorphic core complexes of the western United States Cordilleran region, however there are a number of aspects which do not fit with the models proposed for the development of metamorphic core complexes. Uplift of the metamorphic basement probably resulted from a combination of forces associated with the extension of the crust and the intrusion and emplacement of granodiorite plutons.

A 1991 survey of 48 mining companies, employing more than 24 000 employees, showed that disabling injury and disease rates continue to be the most common measurements of safety management effectivness in the Australian mining industry.Of the companies surveyed, 22 claimed to be making regular safety audits. Of these only two listed the improvement of audit scores among their goals for 1991.Influenced by loss control management thinking, some managers have expanded the scope of their safety programs to include all accidental operational losses adversely affecting mine profitability.Learning from their new experience with total quality management some managers are now recognising that successful safety management outcomes depend on the effective management of program inputs. They are thus turning away from measurements of accident consequences - the failures of the management system - to measurements of management control.The new focus of safety management attention is now on corrective actions before accidents happen.

Vertical crater retreat mining is being used at Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated, Limited for pillar recovery between previously mined and filled stopes. In order to increase productivity in the older lead lode areas of the mine, particularly in the lower grade sections around the keel of the orebody, score form of longhole stoping was considered necessary.Due to poor ground conditions in the country rock surrounding the ore and the requirement to provide sane wall support during mining, primary VCR mining has been utilised in these areas.At Zinc Corporation, several stopes have thus far been mined by a hybrid longhole stripping - VCR method.

In underground mining, the often unpredictable variability in ground conditions may lead to the application of suboptimal drilling and blasting patterns, resulting in poor performance. Experience and pertinent information to develop and implement improved drilling and blasting strategies can be easily lost due to the lack of means to help engineers store, access and manage this information. The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) through a series of industry funded applied research projects has been developing a system that can facilitate the drill and blast design, analysis, auditing, documentation and data management processes. The system is a hybrid between an information management software module called BMS (Blast Management System) and two design and analysis modules, 2DRing for underground production blasting activities and 2DFace for development blasting activities. A concise description of the software tools and its applications are given in this paper, supported by two case studies. Opportunities to further develop the software are also highlighted, they include options to integrate these tools to existing drilling and blasting automation systems and portable computing technology to facilitate the design, implementation and continuous improvement processes.

Corrosion affects the performance of rock support and reinforcement at various underground mines, including the George Fisher Mine, where recent studies showed that this risk to mining operations is generally not well understood. Corrosion reduces the capacity and life expectancy of ground support and generally is undetected unless the traditional destructive pull out test is employed to detect defect bolts. Where it is still acknowledged that the pull out test has still an important role to play in determining critical bond lengths for static and quasi static ground support designs, it does not provide an underground operation with any reassurance regarding its bolt's integrity, which has been compromised by in situ aggressive conditions. Non-destructive rock reinforcement calibration testing on single and twin strand cable bolts, rebar bolts and friction bolts at the George Fisher Mine enabled the testing team to detect bolts with compromised integrity in one area of the mine. The non-destructive rock reinforcement integrity testing conducted uses a complex 'Stress Wave Analysis' package based on the processing of clear seismic signals imparted into the rock reinforcement element that is being tested. The seismic signals are processed by 'Fourier Transform' into various criteria which can be used to produce models of the element such as mechanical admittance, frequency spectra and velocity which are all being used in the final modelling of the rock reinforcement element under analysis. This paper highlights the enormous potential to effectively manage the geotechnical risk that corrosion presents for an underground mining operation.

The depletion of the richest ore deposits and the increase in number of mining projects involving deposits with complex mineralogy, higher competence and lower grade has led to an eminent need for improving understanding on multicomponent behaviour in mineral processing. One particularly relevant case is the ball milling of itabirite iron ores fed to the processing plant of Minas-Rio operation in Brazil. Dealing with the two main mineralogical components of the ore, namely hematite and quartz, the operation faces some challenges to improve understanding on how the two components behave in the process. Mathematical models have showed potential to give support in this task, but its applications to describe this type of industrial-scale grinding is still missing. The present work demonstrates the application of a multi-component ball mill model to simulate a closed ball mill circuit with hydrocyclones using the commercial software Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES). Model was calibrated on the basis of bench-scale tests and industrial surveys. Multi-component simulation results are then compared to those considering a single component in the feed, demonstrating the value and great insights that can be achieved by using the former in optimising plant operation.

The Culampajß auriferous district is located in the northern sector of the eastern edge of the homonymous hill, Catamarca Province, Argentina. Tajo Largo mine is situated in the southern flank of Las Minas gulch at an approximate height of 3.600 m above sea level. In the studied area main outcrops are orthogneiss rocks of Chango Real Formation. The ore mineral is native gold with a lesser amount of pyrite, chalcopyrite, haematite, limonite, malachite, azurite and covellite. These ore mineral assemblages are disseminated in quartz veins filling tension fractures in the host orthogneiss.Several types of inclusions have been recognised, including three phase H2O-CO2liq-CO2vap inclusions, polyphase inclusions with H2O-CO2 and one or more solid phases, and two phase aqueous inclusions. In the three phase H2O-CO2liq-CO2vap inclusions the Tmclath is about 1¦C and the CO2 liquid-vapour homogenisation occurs at 26 - 28¦C, to liquid phase. The homogenisation temperature of H2O-CO2 occurs at 365 - 380¦C in the aqueous phase. This set of data defined a solution with a salinity of 14, 4 wt per cent NaCl equivalent and a density of 0.84 g/cm3. In the two phase aqueous inclusions the melting temperature (Tm) of -5.4¦C and the eutectic point (Te) in -38¦C indicates a salinity of about 7.5 wt per cent NaCl equivalent, with the probable presence of Ca2+. Density of fluid is about 0.83 g/cm3. Homogenisation temperature ranges between 260¦ and 280¦C. The pressure, temperature and salinity of fluids in the polyphase inclusions suggest an early fluid of high density and high salinity. The three-phase fluid inclusions may be the result of an unmixing-phase separation of post magmatic hydrothermal fluid due to pressure decrease along fractures. It is suggested that the deposit was formed during the late magmatic hydrothermal stage genetically linked to granitic rocks and can be comparable with the intrusion-related gold system of Baker (2003).

The western Cordillera of North America, including more than 99% of Alaska, is made up of an agglomeration of litho-tectonic terranes, some of which have undergone large rotations and (or) translations. The larger terranes can be broadly grouped into a small number of composite terranes based on affinities in their lithology, structure, and tectonic evolution. The terranes reflect repeated episodes of marginal rifting as well as formation of marginal arcs, island arc chains, back-arc basins, and oceanic plateaus since late Proterozoic time. Accretion to the continental margin occurred mainly from Middle Triassic through Early Cretaceous time. Major northward dispersal of terranes was largely during the existence of the Kula plate from about 85-55 Ma. Major rotations are the mid-Cretaceous opening of the Arctic Ocean basin with counterclockwise rotation of Arctic Alaska and Laramide oroclinal bending of western Alaska. The present complex Cordilleran geology along the northeast Pacific rim is a sum of these earlier accretionary processes together with continued Cenozoic faulting and deformation that has been superimposed upon the agglomerated displaced terranes over a broad segment of the continental margin.

The paper will review the marked upsurge in the installation of new continuous metal coating lines, both hot dip and electrodeposition. Although some of this new capacity has been replacement for obsolete facilities or directed at traditional markets, eg building products, consumer durables etc, by far the major portion is targeted at the automotive industry. The reasons for the rapid growth of coated automobile panels are discussed. A comparison of the installed capacity with projections for this market indicate that a severe over-supply situation has arisen. Many coatings are now available for the automotive industry, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, but none as yet wholly satisfactory. Coating development has mainly been cost driven. This favours hot dipped coatings, providing surface quality and pressing problems can be overcome. The high cost per unit thickness of electrodeposited coatings has also seen pure zinc coatings being replaced by thinner, more corrosion resistant alloy coatings such as zinc-nickel and zinc-iron. Recently resin overlays have been introduced to improve the performance of electrodeposited coatings. Developments in coatings for the more traditional markets will be described. The fastest growing market in the last decade has been prepainted product for the building industry. This has led to the installation of extra painting capacity and again it appears an excess capacity situation has occurred. Over the same period the traditional zinc coatings have continued to lose market share to the zinc/aluminium alloy coatings, Galvalume and Galfan. These have been joined recently by '1'aiyo Crack-Free which has been taken up by some metal coaters. Galvalume is now widely accepted as being the best available coating for unpainted applications. It is also suggested that 'spin-off' coatings from automotive developments might find a niche in the consumer durable market. The end users of coated products, particularly the automotive industry, have demanded improvements in quality, such as surface smoothness, formability, etc. At the same time the new coating lines have to process wider strip and run at faster speeds. To reconcile these somewhat incompatible needs has required numerous process improvements, many of which need in-line instrumentation and computer control. The more important of these changes are discussed briefly. Finally the paper will describe the recent developments which have occurred in continuous galvanising in Australia and put them into context with the rest of the world.

Ore definition for final stope planning is often a challenging prospect in underground (UG) gold mines which exhibit high geological and grade variability. Unlike the grade control (GC) scenario in an open pit (OP), the ability for the mining geologist to plan a sampling campaign which effectively characterises the underlying mineralisation is fraught with difficulty. UG sampling patterns are strongly clustered and typically not dense enough to characterise the spatial and statistical properties. Very commonly, sample volumes are not large enough to provide a reliable grade estimate of the surrounding rock. These factors critically affect our ability to accurately map out ore positions and estimate metal quantities.At Sunrise Dam, traditional UG sampling and modelling techniques have proven to be an unreliable strategy for successful stope planning and extraction. The problem was first observed during the final cut-back in the open pit for which the mineral resource model was constructed from UG diamond drilling. Open Pit grade control reconciliations were strongly positive for both tonnage and grade compared to the resource model. Underground workings missed significant quantities of ore which was laterally defined by open pit reverse circulation (RC) GC drilling. Upon examination it was realised that the cause of the problem was one of inadequate sample density and sample support, the implications of which potentially affected the entire UG mine.As part of a broader study into underground grade control procedures, detailed reconciliation of initial stope production from the GQ domain also pointed to inadequate sampling as a major constraint to effective grade control and reserve conversion.To overcome this deficiency, dense 115 mm wet RC grade control drilling and conditional simulation modelling has been successfully implemented with the intent to replicate the grade control process in the open pit. The increase in sample density and sample volume has proven to be a very effective tool for mapping out highly complex mineralisation. A marked improvement in stope definition, reserve conversion and Mine to Mill reconciliations has been demonstrated on the back of an innovative approach to UG grade control.CITATION:Clark, F and Carswell, J T, 2014. Pyrite depression with prolonged pre-conditioning treatment in high salinity water has attracted much of researchers’ interest in recent years considering the increased utilisation of multiple stage flotation, closed water circuits, clay minerals, and sea water in flotation plants. In this study, the role of calcium (Ca)/magnesium (Mg) precipitates in stabilising the dissociative ferric hydroxy-xanthate (FHX), and its effect on modifying the balance of hydrophobic/hydrophilic species on the pyrite surface were primarily investigated. The total amount of extractable Fe-bearing species on pyrite concentrates and tailings after floatability test was quantitively determined using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) extraction tests combined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). A more evident accumulation of extracted-Fe in pyrite concentrates rather than it in pyrite tailings was observed at both pH 9 and 10.5 when pyrite was pre-conditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions for 360 min. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed the main xanthate derivatives changed from di-xanthogen (1155 cm-1 ) to FHX (1167 cm-1 ) on the oxidised pyrite samples that were preconditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) suggested the preferential accumulation of FHX upon secondary Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates as reflected by the higher Fe/S ratio together with the decrease of O element herein after xanthate conditioning. Although the hydrophilic secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals on the pyrite surface generally deteriorate pyrite’s floatability, the upper section of these secondary hydrophilic aggregates is partially covered by FHX alongside with further multilayer-adsorbed di-xanthogen. The precipitated Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates promotes the immobilisation of dissociated FHX derived from the reaction among iron oxyhydroxides and xanthate anions upon the localised secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals via acid–base complexation. Therefore, this phenomenon alleviates the hydrophilic modification of secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals to pyrite considering the immobilised FHX upon localised precipitates shows a slight hydrophobicity, and meanwhile, the upper FHX benefits the multilayer adsorption of di-xanthogen via the interaction among their inner hydrophobic alkyl chains.

Fibre-reinforced geopolymer concrete (FRGC) contains no Portland cement or steel reinforcement, but instead uses synthetic fibre reinforcement and a geopolymer binder. The use of geopolymer binder in lieu of Portland cement reduces the concrete’s embedded energy (CO2 emissions) whilst the use of synthetic fibres eliminates the issue of reinforcement corrosion, thus enhancing the overall long-term durability of concrete. This paper presents the development of FRGC during a three-year project funded by the Victorian Science Agenda and a consortium of five organisations. The work involved laboratory and field trials and the production of prototype tunnel segments that have been subject to durability and fire testing.FRGC has exceeded the performance of the Portland cement-based control mix in terms of flexural strength, chloride diffusion, water sorptivity and drying shrinkage. Furthermore, the FRGC segments subjected to a simulated hydrocarbon fire test did not exhibit explosive spalling; however, the creep of FRGC was approximately three times that of the steel fibre-reinforced Portland cement-based control mix. The compressive strength and tensile splitting strength of the FRGC were also lower than the control mix. These differences need to be allowed for in the design using FRGC.Prototype bolted tunnel segments of up to 0.8?t mass have been produced from FRGC using standard production techniques and ambient curing. These were successfully produced within a 24-hour production cycle. Cut sections through the segments showed good compaction and even distribution of fibres. The estimated carbon footprint of tunnel segments produced using FRGC is approximately 70 per cent less than that of Portland cement-based segments containing 25 per cent fly ash and steel reinforcement.The results to date indicate that FRGC has the potential to produce a new generation of tunnel segments and, in general, precast concrete products with increased durability and substantially reduced carbon emissions compared to the Portland cement-based concrete with steel reinforcement.A summary of further research carried out by CH2M HILL into a complete elimination of ferrous inserts from segmental concrete tunnel lining is also summarised in this paper. The use of non-ferrous connectors for radial joints in combination with the FRGC technology in the manufacture of tunnel segments will effectively lead to development of a new generation of segmental tunnel lining systems.CITATION:Wimpenny, D, Chappell, M and Wieloch, M, 2014. Steelmaking slags are usually used as roadbed and civil engineering materials. However, the expansion phenomenon, which is caused by the volume expansion during hydration of free CaO and free MgO contained in steelmaking slag, is indispensable. Since the hydration of free MgO in steelmaking slag is much slower than that of free CaO, it is qualitatively considered that free MgO contributes to the hydration expansion of steelmaking slag over a long period of time. Similar to free CaO, free MgO consists of undissolved MgO and crystallised MgO in steelmaking slag. The latter precipitates during slag cooling. When divalent metal oxides (FeO, MnO, CaO) are dissolved in the crystallised MgO to form a MgO-based solid solution, it is expected to inhibit the hydration reaction similar to precipitated CaO. From the previous hydration test of Magnesioferrite, which was calcined after mixing MgO and Fe2O3 reagents, it was found that the higher the Fe2O3 concentration, the slower the hydration reaction progressed. In this study, by clarifying the influence of calcination conditions of MgO-FeO and MgO-FeO-MnO solid solutions, which were prepared by the calcination of mixture of MgO, FeO and MnO reagents, on their hydration reactivity, the effect of composition and thermal treatment on the formation of free MgO that is not hydrated (or easily hydrated) were discussed. To investigate the influence of MgO grain size, coarse MgO particles, which were obtained by crushing MgO crucible, were also used for heat treatment. With increasing the amount of FeO and MnO in the MgO-FeO-MnO solid solution, the hydration reaction became more suppressed. The expansion suppression effect was higher with solid-solved FeO than with solidsolved MnO. When the calcination temperature of the MgO-FeO solid solution was increased, the Fe3+/Fe2+ concentration ratio increased, resulting in a higher hydration rate.

A number of standards and guidance materials currently exist to assist equipment designers. The ISO process, however, is a formal process and change often lags behind technology development. In some cases, this may result in weak or ineffective standards that need to be written in general terms to accommodate future technology developments, meaning some standards may only establish minimum requirements and not be overly helpful to equipment designers, in particular when designing for workforce diversity and inclusivity. By contrast, advisory information as issued by various mining regulatory bodies is able to respond more quickly to changes in technology. Standards do however have a safety and productivity focus providing design consistency between equipment manufacturers, a basis for auditing purposes, assistance in mining regulation and compliance, and in the development and application of safety management systems. As an example of challenges facing equipment designers, ISO3411 (2020) provides data approximating the 5th, 50th and 95th percentile of the ‘earth-moving machinery operator population’ for numerous static dimensions relevant to the design of earth-moving equipment. These data are then utilised in ISO6682 (2020) to provide recommendations regarding the location of controls. Attempting to utilise the data provided in ISO3411 (or other sources of static anthropometric data) creates further challenges for equipment designers, in that reference percentiles is problematic for design purposes. There is no ‘5th or 95th percentile operator’ as individuals vary along each dimension (Robinette and Hudson, 2006). Although dimensions have some degrees of correlation, when multiple dimensions are considered, the range of individuals which fall within a given range on all dimensions reduces substantially. For example, only about 82 per cent of individuals in a population will fall within the 5th to 95th percentile ranges for both height and weight. The more dimensions are considered, the smaller the range of people who actually ‘fit’ the description.
