The characterisation of the flotation kinetic response in future mining deposits is important because the flotation response is affected by changes in ore mineralogy. Current methods for characterising the flotation response of different ore types, such as the JK floatability index test (JKFIT) methodology, require at least 10 kg of feed material. In geometallurgical applications, this material is taken from core samples. Core samples are generally obtained using specialised drills and are limited in nature. Thus, it would be beneficial to develop a laboratory technique that required less sample material but still characterised the flotation response of different ore types. The JK mineral separation index (JKMSi) is a small-scale flotation test that requires significantly less feed material (10 g of sample/data point). This study aims to investigate the JKMSi system kinetics and to validate this technique using the JKFIT proven methodology. The JKMSi flotation kinetics were manipulated by varying selected system parameters. The relationship between these parameters and mineral recovery was used to obtain floatability characteristics of the ore. For an ore sample containing chalcopyrite and pyrite, it was found that the chalcopyrite floatability parameters determined from both the JKMSi and JKFIT tests were of the same order of magnitude and the mass fractions of the fast, slow and non-floating components were similar. For pyrite, the floatability parameters were not of the same order of magnitude, but modifications to the test procedure have been identified, which may correct this.CITATION:Morgan, S, Bradshaw, D J and Schwarz, S, 2012. The Eriez HydroFloat® is a flotation device capable of recovering significantly coarser and lessliberated particles than is possible using a conventional mechanical flotation cell. Originally developed for industrial and bulk mineral beneficiation, the HydroFloat® is attracting increasing interest as a means of increasing the required grind size for metalliferous ore flotation. Doing so would reduce the costs of processing complex ores, either by decreasing the energy required to grind the flotation feed or by increasing the throughput achievable with a given comminution circuit. Processing coarser particles would also result in coarser waste streams, potentially improving the mechanical and hydraulic performance of the waste dams that they are sent to. Recent work at pilot – and industrial-scale has proven the potential of the HydroFloat® technology to achieve these gains in metalliferous applications. However, in order to realise the full potential of the HydroFloat® technology, it is necessary to understand not just its performance but also the drivers for that performance. Doing so will allow the design and operation of HydroFloat® devices to be optimised for different ores and applications. For this work, a HydroFloat® pilot rig was deployed to a coppergold plant in Australia and was used to investigate the effect of stream and operating conditions for treating the tailings stream of one of the plant’s rougher flotation cells. Under each set of operating conditions, samples were taken of the HydroFloat® feed, tailings and concentrate streams, and processed to yield the grade and recovery achieved by the device. At the same time, the bubble size and bed behaviour inside the device were measured. This paper presents preliminary relationships observed between the operating conditions and the performance of the HydroFloat® cell, and thus suggests a range of possible drivers for the measured coarse particle flotation performance.

Global annual gold production has been remarkably constant over the last decade at ~2500 t/a3. The major producers today are China (annual production over 350 t and rising), Australia (250 t), USA (240 t), Russia (200 t) and South Africa (190 t and falling); these figures are representative of recent years but approximate. Demand from jewellery, investment, industrial and dental uses has been in excess of mine production for the last decade, by approximately 1000 t/a.Ongoing exploration is the life-blood for gold mining, and more so than for many other metals. Explorers consider sovereign risk, security, labour costs, commercial terms, land availability and inherent geologic prospectivity to determine where to focus their activities. Exploration success over the last decade has been shared by established major producers like Australia, Canada and USA, several countries in West Africa, and many parts of the Pacific margin. Although gold-only deposits have dominated world gold production historically, the gold-plus types, especially copper-gold, are becoming more important.Australia experienced a major period of exploration success from 1979 that has led to annual gold production rising from 17 t in 1979 to 250 - 300 t/a recently. Today, Australia has economic demonstrated resources of over 9000 t Au, which has risen progressively from 220 t in 1979. The majority of production has come from gold-only deposits in the Yilgarn craton in the southern half of Western Australia, but there are a few large Proterozoic deposits in central Australia including Olympic Dam, Telfer and Starra, which are mostly gold-plus types with copper and gold. Large goldfields in the younger host rocks of eastern Australia include the gold-only deposits of Victoria and North Queensland, and gold-plus deposits of New South Wales.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. Operational readiness is a commonly used term in mining and many other industry settings. However, translating this term into a coherent scope of work that is practical and meaningful is a challenge faced by many mining projects. This inhibits the allocation of resources to the work and its completion. The problem is with understanding how the terminology applies to establishing a mining operation. Resolving this problem requires clarity around what operational readiness means for a mining project’s transition to operations and who owns the tasks of completing operational readiness. The motivation for resolution of this problem is in appreciating the consequences arising from any lack of clarity in definition of this task, the timing of the work, and ownership for its completion. In broad terms, these consequences amount to an erosion of value at a critical time for both the new mine and the company and shareholders. This situation often arises where operational readiness is not adequately addressed in project’s study phases. As a result, neither time, resources nor money are adequately provided to complete the work required. In other cases, operational readiness is sometimes assimilated with the delivery of the project’s physical assets by the project’s construction team, rather than aligned with the establishment of the operating team to deliver the desired operational outputs. This paper argues that operational readiness starts in a project’s study phases and flows through into the start of operations. The definition of operational readiness is discussed as a task, and a model for its planning and completion is presented. This discussion includes assigning ownership for operational readiness planning and delivery to the General Manager of a new operation and the operations leadership team, who are central to the success of this work. After all, the reputations of this leadership team depend on the performance of the operation in its first few years. The author’s work over the last 20 years, leading operational readiness programs and the preparation of feasibility studies for mining projects, has provided the insights and evolution of ideas that are central to this paper. Operational readiness is fundamentally directed at ensuring a new mining operation gets away to a successful start and builds a solid foundation for the future of the mine/operation/province. It requires clarity of purpose, ownership and coordination by people in the operating team, and their preparation of the requisite process definition and establishment of the significant relationships required for operations. Without its successful completion, it is unlikely the new operation will meet and sustain its start-up targets. This paper discusses a practical approach to operational readiness for mining projects.

CSIRO staff and University of Melbourne staff and students collaborated in an intense programme of investigation on the CSIRO 50 kg Sirosmelt pilot plant.In two days of operation copper matte converting and zinc slag fuming trials were performed, whilst investigation of the process dynamics and process chemistry was carried out. This exercise is an example of the techniques available for process evaluation, which can rapidly advance the understanding of pyrometallurgical operations by use of a team approach covering a wide range of experiments.

Stratabound/stratiform and remobilised mineralisation have been recognised as the two dominant styles of mineralisation which constitute the Broken Hill ore deposit. Recognition of prospective sites for accumulation of ore depends on understanding the heterogeneity of the ore environment and the distribution of the two styles of mineralisation. The internal stratigraphy of the Broken Hill ore deposit and its enveloping rocks, is described, and a generalised stratigraphic setting of the stratiform mineralisation is outlined. Fhiphasis is placed on the existence of closely-spaced sub-basins as potential sites for ore accumulation close to the Broken Hill ore deposit. The Research Centres Program initiated by the Federal Government and supported by the mining industry has had a major impact on geoscience research and education during the past five years. Eight major university based-Geoscience Research Centres are currently supported by the Government, including four Key Centres of Teaching and Research and a further four Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs). The Research Centres Program has led to a concentration of high quality research and teaching in areas of demand and strategic importance creating strong university - industry linkages and a source of well trained and motivated graduates. Over the last decade Australia's reputation as a leader in mineral exploration and ore deposit research has grown substantially, in part because of the development of the Research Centres Program, and to increased collaboration and interaction between research groups and exploration geoscientists across the industry. During a period when ore deposit research activity has been decreasing in other countries (eg USA, Canada, Japan and most European countries), equivalent research activities in Australia have been increasing, within a well co-ordinated national framework. The future challenge for universities and the mining industry will be to maintain the momentum of the successful research centres in order for the centres to become self-funding over a six- to nine-year period.

MIM Holdings Limited has acquired a reputation for the successful application of R&D to develop break-through technologies for the mining industry. The Isa Process tank-house technology has been licensed to copper refineries throughout the world, and almost 40 per cent of the worldÆs copper is refined using this technology. Isasmelt copper and lead smelting technology is either in use, or is currently being installed, by eight companies in eight countries around the world. Jameson Cell technology is widely used in the coal mining industry and increasingly in the base-metal industry. The IsaMills developed at Mount Isa and McArthur River made it possible to develop the McArthur River and George Fisher orebodies. This paper will address the need for innovation and then discuss the development of the IsaMill and Isasmelt technologies. It will conclude with some comments about why MIM has been so successful in developing such technologies.

Real-time monitoring of mine operating parameters is available at most mines. However, access to these data for an individual operation is typically underutilised by mine managers and technical personnel. Such monitoring systems are typically designed to provide data streams and alarms to a responsible person, but they are not utilised to extract underlying trends or correlate different data groups. Furthermore, multiple monitoring systems are usually implemented at a given site without interconnection between vendors’ systems or connection to any central management, and mine personnel are only exposed to a minimal subset of such data. Thus, it is not easy to analyse and correlate individual data streams and generate information to enhance day-to-day operational decision-making and improve safety and efficiency.This paper addresses the primary challenges associated with centralising data management and effecting greater utilisation of the vast amount of collected data, while at the same time reducing the time and effort required to manage such large data sets. Furthermore, it presents the conceptual design of a database application that can organise, present and analyse data collected by multiple sensors in different environments. The database is designed to operate in a passive manner so that active mine data management systems are not impacted. An example is given where this database is used for managing atmospheric data collected at an underground coalmine operation in the US. The prediction of ground-borne noise levels from tunnel construction activities requires knowledge of the input vibration forces from the vibration source(s) into the cutting face, knowledge of the vibration transmissibility through the surrounding medium, and knowledge of the receiver building’s vibro-acoustic response. The conversion of this vibration energy into sound pressure within the receiver building depends upon the vibration coupling of the soil and the building’s foundations, the structure’s response including floor-to-floor attenuation and amplifi cation due to resonance, the radiation effi ciencies of the internal structural elements, and the room’s acoustical properties. Beginning with a known input vibration spectrum at the cutting face, it is possible to predict the resultant ground-borne noise levels within a receiver building using either analytical and/or empirical techniques, or by numerical modelling. This paper presents an overview of the various methods available to estimate ground-borne noise levels from tunnel construction activities and discusses the advantages and limitations of each.

Metal production have long been using carbon sources as both reducing agents and energy sources. Consequently, the global extractive metal sector contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for approximately 9.5 per cent. Hydrogen gas offers as a promising ecofriendly alternative to carbon in metallurgical processes, serving as both a reductant and energy supplier with a by-product being only water vapour. However, the implementation of molecular hydrogen faces certain challenges related to the thermodynamics and kinetics of metal oxide reduction. In addressing these challenges, researchers have explored the application of hydrogen plasma, generated by subjecting molecular hydrogen to high energy to produce atomic, ionic and excited hydrogen species. Hydrogen plasma offers thermodynamic and kinetic advantages over molecular hydrogen and carbon-based reductants, exhibiting lower standard Gibbs free energy of reaction and activation energy. Therefore, hydrogen plasma can produce metal in fewer steps, process any oxide feed and feed size and even be used to refine metals. Despite these advantages, challenges exist in utilising hydrogen plasma in extractive metallurgy, including electricity costs, potential reverse reactions and industrial-scale implementation. This study provides a mini review of prior research on hydrogen plasma for metal oxides reduction, particularly iron oxide, as well as state-of-the-art techniques for its use in extractive metallurgy applications by mentioning several reactor types. Future prospects and scale-up possibilities of the hydrogen plasma in extractive metallurgy will also be presented.

High purity alumina (HPA) is a processed, premium non-metallurgical alumina product characterised by its purity level ie 99.99 per cent (4N) or 99.999 per cent (5N). The market price, application, and performance of HPA varies widely according to its degree of purity. High purity alumina is a form of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) with growing use in LED lighting and coating on the ceramic cathode separator sheets in lithium ion batteries. This paper describes a study on producing high purity alumina from feldspar to produce HPA and potash for use as a fertiliser. The project was positive for a number of reasons. High potassium extraction (>99 per cent) was achieved in the alkali leach using sodium hydroxide as the leaching agent and full dissolution of the alkali leach residue was achieved using hydrochloric and sulfuric acid. The potential to produce a high purity alumina product via a complex but promising emerging process was assessed. The potential to extract potassium as potassium sulfate to add value to the project was also demonstrated with the test work.

The Thiess John Holland Group is undertaking the design and construction of Brisbane’s Airport Link Project, the largest single investment in transportation infrastructure in Australian history. Twin Herrenknecht TBMs are being used to bore parallel road tunnels from Kalinga Part in Toombul through to Lutwyche, a distance of 2.45 km. At 12.48 m, these tunnel boring machines (TBM) are the largest diameter machines, outside of Japan, to incorporate annular two-component type grouting through the tailskins.Grout design, preparation and injection have been given particular attention in this project in order to push the boundaries of achievement. Laboratory testing was conducted on various mix designs to ensure the contract specifi cations for grout strength could be met. To study the mechanics of the grout injection process, Herrenknecht supplied a test rig which duplicates the grout injection systems on the TBMs. Multiple recipes were tested, carefully selected to balance the requirements of rapid strength development with high mobility (to completely fill the void between the segmental lining and the ground) and minimal bleed.Team Mixing Technologies, Canada, was selected as the grout plant provider based on the technical performance of their high shear colloidal mill mixers. Field results have shown that the colloidal mixer prepared grout gives almost double the strength of an identical grout prepared by a paddle mixer.

The Big Wainihinihi River and tunnel are located on the western side of the Southern Alps of New Zealand within the active Alpine Fault zone, which marks the boundary between the Pacific and Australian Tectonic Plates. The tunnel was built over 100 years ago to supply water for gold mining, but it now conveys water from a high-energy intake to a canal that supplies three of TrustPower’s hydro-electric power stations with a combined installed generating capacity of 10 MW. Part of the tunnel passes through an unstable 50° schist slope, which fi rst suffered a wedge failure in the 1929 Arthur’s Pass Earthquake and was reinstated in the mid-1970s for hydro generation. In 2008, TrustPower’s monitoring system showed that the wedge failure had remobilised and that urgent remediation was required.Harker Underground Construction (Harker) was awarded a design-build contract to restore the tunnel to service by tunnelling a new central section. Their geotechnical engineers, Peters and Cheung, reviewed the tunnel’s stability and proposed a new, safer tunnel alignment, deep behind the failure wedges. This work was based on their failure model, cost-benefit studies, and engineering geology completion mapping at the time of re-opening.Construction innovation was an important factor in ensuring the project’s success, as were detailed geological and geotechnical information, a robust methodology, strong client relationship and planning. To suit the varying rock conditions and restricted space, Harker combined a traditional drill-and-blast method with light-weight modular steel sets and timber supports to reduce construction costs and mitigate support risk. To make material handing easier in the tight conditions, a special electric locomotive was designed and built and blasting confi gurations were adapted to suit varying rock conditions in the highly fractured schist.The isolated site meant interesting and unexpected challenges, particularly communications and resources (both human and material). Despite that, the project was completed within budget, on schedule, and with no lost-time injuries.

No new goldfields have been found in the Witwatersrand Basin for over 60 years, and one consequence of this is a long-term decline in gold production. Exploration throughout this period has been based on the placer model that infers alluvial transport of gold grains and then sedimentary sorting in the basin; however, there is no viable source for so much alluvial gold and no single sedimentary setting that hosts the gold.An alternative genetic model can now provide a quantified explanation for the source of the gold, and it does not rely on alluvial gold processes. The hydrothermal model can easily explain the source of the Witwatersrand gold as being derived from the background gold at parts per billion (ppb) level throughout the Kaapvaal craton of South Africa. This gold is involved in metamorphic processes, available for solution in metamorphic fluids, and hence may be transported whilst dissolved in fluid into the Witwatersrand Basin. The hydrothermal model warrants consideration as it can explain the source of gold, the large alteration halo in the goldfields, the mineralogy, and especially the gold-carbon association.Working on the premise that if one model (placer) is not giving the desired results (discovery of new goldfields), then it may be prudent to consider alternatives. Application of a hydrothermal model to guide exploration would place importance on large and small early structures in and around the Witwatersrand Basin; it would also emphasise the geochemical nature of potential host rocks (especially C and Fe) rather than their sedimentary origin.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. ROES« is a proposed new mining system for underground hard rock mines. Ore is accessed from within a shaft, which is located close to or within the stope, and pitched either vertical or within approximately 20 degrees of vertical. The shaft is designed to exclude personnel entry so production drilling and explosive placement is done using remotely controlled or automated machines. Routine remotely controlled survey of the shaft, stope back and broken rock within the stope is typically done following each blast. The survey may include excavation geometry, rock fragmentation and geotechnical characteristics. Blastholes are surveyed before placement of explosives. This provides mine operators and engineers with real-time data, allowing them to monitor production performance and risk factors so that they can make rapid changes as required. ROES« is designed to apply to open stoping or sublevel caving situations either in disseminated, geologically defined, thick tabular or narrow vein orebodies. The technologies developed for ROES« will also have potential applications to block caving operations to reduce the risk of frozen ore and poor fragmentation. In a typical sublevel open stope application, ROES« will reduce the amount of stope-associated development by about half and therefore will allow ore to be brought on-stream sooner and at significantly reduced cost. Other savings are expected to flow from the centralisation of mining activities and operational data, reduction in mining fleet, reduction in ventilation requirements, improved occupational safety and reduced mine complexity. CSIRO and Orica Mining Services are developing the required technology and AMIRA is seeking sponsorship for a project to trial the mining method. This paper details the ROES« method, expected benefits and applications and includes typical stope and mining block designs and design requirements.

This study data has been collected on a three-month period from November 2020 to January 2021 and based on three different pits: Vindaloo Main, Vindaloo Central and Bouere. Both pits having specific geotechnical and geological properties. Vindaloo Main, VIM, and Central, VIC, have the same mineral composition as volcanic tuff with felsic intrusion or monzodiorite, both rock mass is fractured with small joint. Geotechnically the uniaxial compressive strength UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 110 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.1 to 0.2. Bouere pit is basically made of volcanic tuff stock works as intrusive, UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 103 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.2 to 0.3. The first step of this study was to collect various data from mining operations around the drilling and blasting inputs. This was based around the different scenario of drilling parameters and the outcomes on the blasting, and how they impact load and haul operations and productivities of excavators from the heave to the last flitch. In most cases surface photos of the blast do not represent the overall fragmentation in the blast volume. Photos of the different flitches will not show only the effect of blast, as the loading operation generating more fragmentation by applying weight on the muck pile. Then the record of the different material uses for feeding. The last part of the analysis is the physical data from process plant such as particle size, throughput rate, both for the crusher and the mill, per pit and material and the specific Bond Work index (BWI). Fine particle quantity production is also a key point as is one direct indicator of milling performance. In overall, making link to BWI can influence at each stage of the mining to the processing operation. Drill and blast constitute a high cost in hard rock mining and trying to reduce these costs without an overview of all the integrated processes and context could end up by cost relocating to other activities in the process. However, the cost associated to size reduction builds exponentially as the particle size becomes smaller.

Directional hydraulic fracturing was invented by Polish experts and was first applied in coal mining to prevent hard roof rock bursts. Based on its successful application in coal mining, directional hydraulic fracturing has the potential to reorientate the hydraulic fracture trajectory. Recently, this technique has been introduced into cave mining for the purpose of lowering breakdown pressure. The hydraulic fracture is much easier to initiate with the assistance of an initial notch. No systematic theoretical or experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the influencing factors in the hydraulic fracture reorientation process. In this paper, the numerical modelling software Realistic Failure Process Analysis3D (RFPA3D) – Flow Version is used to study the influence of the in situ stress condition and rock mass heterogeneity on directional hydraulic fracturing in brittle heterogeneous rock masses. Firstly, the reliability of RFPA3D in simulating hydraulic fracturing is validated by comparing its results with experimental results and the simulation results from the extended finite element method. The hydraulic fracture trajectory is then observed in a three-dimensional stress environment. The results indicate that for the in situ stress condition, when the borehole lies in the ?2–?3 plane, only the difference between ?2 and ?3 has an important influence on hydraulic fracture reorientation. Mine soils are often organic matter and carbon poor due to disturbance, topsoil stockpiling and mixing with spoil. They present an opportunity to observe the accumulation of soil carbon arising from rehabilitation or ‘green carbon’ through organic matter inputs and may be considered for carbon credits. Soil carbon is known to improve multiple soil characteristics and is viewed as an indicator of soil health.When attempting to estimate soil carbon levels in the Australian coal mining regions, both coal and black carbon (BC) need to be quantified. Coalmine soils contain coal particles that are difficult to distinguish from organic matter using standard carbon analyses. BC, a material arising from the incomplete combustion of organic matter and fossil fuels, displays some similar characteristics to coal and is ubiquitous in Australian soils due to bushfires. The presence of coal and BC complicate the determination of green carbon levels in mine soils.A method to quantify coal and BC in mine soils from the Bowen Basin using thermal analysis and multivariate curve resolution is presented. By determining BC and coal contributions it is then possible to calculate green carbon levels in rehabilitated mine soils. Traditionally pit optimisation and scheduling is carried out assuming that the resources, the commodity prices and production costs are all known. Once the pit contour and the mining schedule have been determined, geostatistical simulations can be used to assess the impact of the uncertainty in the resources on the pit design and the schedule, and likewise stochastic simulations can be used to test its robustness to fluctuations in costs and prices. But it would be more interesting to have a dynamic procedure for optimising the pit as the resources become better known and as economic factors such as commodity prices and costs evolve over time. This paper presents a novel approach for doing this. Rather than working with millions of small selective mining units, it was decided to work with large blocks, called macro-blocks. Mining sequences are defined as the quantities to be extracted from each macro-block in each time period. Feasible mining sequences are mining sequences that respect the accessibility constraints, and also the geometric constraints on the amounts that can be extracted from any one block over time, or from all the active blocks at a given time. Having defined feasible mining sequences, their mathematical properties were studied. It was found that natural breakpoints occur in the sequences when one set of blocks have been completely mined out, thereby opening up access to others. It was discovered that families of sequences exist, and that they are convex and closed under certain types of row permutation operations. Convexity is an advantage when optimising. The closure property opens up the possibility of mixing and matching subsequences of rows in the sequences. Another interesting property is that the sequences form branching families, rather like the binomial and trinomial trees used to model prices in finance and in real options.It is easy to generate large numbers of feasible mining sequences randomly. A two-step procedure is used to find the best one (or the best few) using three economic criteria: expected NPV,the probability of a negative NPV, and the percentage of years when the cash flow is negative. The procedure was tested on a synthetic gold mine based on the characteristics of the Essakane mine in Burkina Faso. The results were encouraging.
