INTRODUCTION The Department of Energy is cooperating with Snowmass Coal Company near Carbondale, Colorado to introduce the longwall mining method in moderate to steeply pitching coal seams in the United States. This venture is part of a coal mining research program directed toward development, trial, and analysis of mining technique8 to improve production and recovery in the more difficult mining conditions such as thick, multiple, and steeply pitchly seams found in the Western U.S. The project at Snowmass is the first attempt in the United States to operate a longwall in a steep coal seam. Plans are to mine three adjacent, successively downslope panels in the eight foot thick seam which varies in pitch from 27 to 33 degrees. During this work, researchers and mine engineers are expected to obtain answers to many engineering questions relative to panel design and development, selection of face equipment and beet operating techniques and procedures. They are also committed to obtaining hard data on costs, recovery, production, safety, and behavior of underground mine structure as the three panels are mined. This information is essential to future mine engineering and profitable mining of pitching Western coal reserves. Development of the first trial panel was begun in 1979 and completed in June 1981. The longwall mining equipment was then installed in the starting room and retreat mining begun on August 11, 1981. Project duration is expected to be about five years during which over tm million tons of coal will be produced. TRAINING The longwall mining method is new to Snowmass. For years the mine produced coal by room and pillar methods using conventional techniques to mine upslope rooms and Alpine F6A miners to cut entries and rooms on strike. Miners were experienced in room and - pillar mining from other mines. News of the longwall demonstration was received enthusiastically by Snowmass miners. Employee interest in the project was 100%. However, there was minimal longwall experience on site. In fact, most of the work force had not even seen a longwall. Mine and company management were well aware of the immediate need to develop trained longwall face mining crews and maintenance people qualified to work on longwall equipment and also expertise in longwall planning, equipment selection, power distribution design, ventilation requirements and panel development. The first approach to answer this huge deficiency in longwall mining experience was obviously training. Hence a training program directed toward those mining specifics most urgent to the beginning mining phases was initiated in mid-1980. Classroom lectures and hands on training, using instructors from equipment suppliers and available company longwall expertise, was conducted in longwall subjects to include face mining procedures, panel development, operation of equipment, equipment assembly and maintenance, electrical circuitry and controls, ventilation, move of longwall equipment, and safety procedures. At the same time, responsible engineers and foremen were sent on a tour of European pitching longwalls to see first hand how other mines working under similar seam conditions conducted their operations. Development techniques, types of equipment, methods for transport of men and materials, and ground control techniques were discussed with engineers, foremen and officials at each mine. This look at European longwall mining operations gave Snowmass good insight into the unique problems associated with longwall mining on 30' pitch. Mining considerations such as face conveyor/ support system slippage downslope, panel development, maintenance, safety considerations, manpower requirements, and haulage methods were covered with European experts

ROCK-DRILL steel has an important bearing on costs in many mining operations, both directly and indirectly. Direct factors include such items as shop expense, steel consumed per ton of ore produced, cost of distribution and the dust hazard. The latter, although no specific amount may be assigned to it, is an ever-present problem, and is receiving increased attention as the science of mining progresses. Indirectly drill-steel performance affects consumption of compressed air, maintenance of drills and drilling speed. The latter, in turn, increases or retards the tempo of mining and development. These factors, while not all inclusive, are preponderant in their importance. Thus it is evident that in an extensive operation drill-steel expense may run to many thousands of dollars and that thoughtful research leading toward more efficient practice is warranted. EXPERIMENTAL WORK During the late spring of 1939, experiments were undertaken at Homestake in reducing changes in drill-steel gauge from 1/8 in. to 1/16 in. John F. Myers (Consulting Engineer, Greenwich, Corm.)—Since the art of comminution has lain practically dormant for many years, it is very interesting that R. T. Hukki approaches the subject with a new concept. One is reminded of the research carried on by A. W. Fahrenwald of Moscow, Idaho, a few years ago. Fahrenwald mounted a steel bowl on a vertical shaft. The balls and ore placed in the bowl were rotated at fast speeds, thus simulating the supercritical speeds used by Hukki. The rolling action of the balls against the smooth shell liner has pretty much the same effect. The action is horizontal in one case and vertical in the other. Both researchers report good grinding activity. It is also constructive that such able investigators give to the students of comminution their interpretation of their laboratory results in terms of large-scale operation. History shows that it takes a lot of time for such radically new ideas to be absorbed by the industry. Typical of this is the present-day activity of cyclone classification in primary grinding circuits. The idea of cyclone classification has been kicking around for 30 or 40 years. Certainly we all suspect that the ponderous grinding mills of today, and their accessory apparatus, large buildings, etc., will ultimately give way to small fast units, just as this has occurred in other industries over the past 50 years. At the moment there is no evidence that ball and liner wear is prohibitively high. In fact, at the time Fahrenwald was demonstrating his high-speed horizontal machine at the meeting of the American Mining Congress, several years ago, he assured this writer that the balls retained their shape much longer than they do in conventional tumbling mills. Rods and balls that slide (as some operators in uranium plants are experiencing) get flat. Apparently the balls have a rolling action. Mr. Hukki's references to the processing capacity of the Tennessee Copper Co. mills is adequate. Those studying this subject will be greatly interested in the paper presented by Richard Smith of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at the annual meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Vancouver April 24, 1958. This paper will be published during the latter part of 1958 in the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Bulletin. Hukki's pioneering spirit is to be commended. R. T. Hukki (author's reply)—It has been heartening to read the objective discussion by J. F. Myers. The sincerity of his opinions is further strengthened by the fact that the article he has discussed contradicts in a major way the parallel achievements of his life work. Myers is right in his opinion that in general it takes a long time before new ideas are accepted by the industry. On the other hand, revolutions usually take place at supercritical speeds. There are many indications at present that both the unit operation of grinding and the related subject of size control are now just about ripe for a revolution. In grinding, brute force must ultimately give way to science. Rapid progress can be anticipated in the following fields: 1) Autogenous fine grinding at supercritical speeds will be the first advance and the one that will gain recognition most easily on industrial scale. At this moment, little Finland appears to be leading the world. Crocker recently made a statement that in nine cases out of ten, your own ore can be used as grinding medium more effectively and far more economically than steel balls. This is true. The present author would like to introduce a supplementary idea: In eight cases out of the nine cited above, it can be done at the highest overall efficiency in the supercritical speed range. Fine grinding must be based on attrition, not impact. The path of attrition may be vertical, horizontal, even inclined. 2) In coarse grinding, the conventional use of rods is sound practice. However, even the rods can be replaced by autogenous chunks large enough to offer the same impact momentum as the rods. To obtain the momentum, the chunks must be provided with a free fall through a sufficient height in horizontal mills operated at supercritical speeds. Coarse grinding must be based on impact. Detailed analysis of the subject may be found in a paper entitled "All-autogenous Grinding at Supercritical Speeds" in Mine and Quarry Engineering, July 1958. 3) All conventional methods of classification, including wet and dry cyclones, are inefficient in sharpness of separation. Continuous return of huge tonnages of finished material to the grinding unit with the circulating load is senseless practice. In the near future the present methods will be either replaced or supplemented by precision sizing. These three fields are also the ones to which J. F. Myers has so admirably contributed in the past. Experimental data is given for several natural minerals on the load required for the fracture of single specimens over a very wide size range. The experimental results are compared with published data, such as for coal specimens from 30 to 64 in. in size. Correlations of the specific energy (per unit mass) required for fracture with specimen size are given as functions of specimen shape and the experimentally observed load-size relationships. These correlations are discussed with reference to comminution theory. Comminution, through compression or impact, can result only if sufficient force, or energy, is applied to a specimen of a given size. The relation of specimen size to force requirements has not been adequately considered previously. For single particle fracture, it was previously shown 1 that the specific energy (energy, e, per unit mass, M) at fracture of single glass spheres was inversely proportional to the product size modulus, k, as indicated in the equation: e/M = C/k [1] This was found true not only for numerous glass specimens of the same nominal size but was true for all nominal sizes tested from 1/8 to 1 in. Also, it was observed that the smaller spheres required a greater specific energy at fracture than the larger spheres and consequently had a smaller product size modulus. However, the relationship giving the required fracture energy as a function of specimen size was not further elaborated upon. This paper will extend the development of the feed size effect on specific fracture energy for brittle materials. SPECIFIC ENERGY-FEED SlZE RELATIONSHIPS FROM PREVIOUS DATA For the particular glass spheres tested in the previously described experiments,' it can be shown, as on Fig. 1, that the specific energy varied inversely as the 4/3 power approximately of the feed size, F, in the span of nominal sizes ranging from 1/8 to 1 in. The load at which a 3-in. diam glass sphere (a crystal gazer's ball) was broken was within the range predicted by an extrapolation of this energy-feed size relationship. Application Of electric logs has been used in correlation of subsurface structure to determine the size and shape of the oil reservoir. Such a knowledge is hardly complete until saturation and productivity are determined for the various horizons. It is difficult to use electric logs successfully for this purpose because of the many factors that influence the curves. In this work an effort was made to establish an empirical correlation between formation resistivity for a series of electric-log curves and water saturation and oil productivity of sand. Electric logs were obtained by recording with 10 different electrode spacings through the same interval of a well. In the analysis of these curves all factors except two, a dependent and independent variable, were held constant. The interval studied had been cored and a large number of samples were analyzed in the core laboratory in order to compare the values of permeability and saturation with the measured values of formation resistivity. Results of this analysis indicate: (I) the depth to which mud filtrate enters a sand body, (2) a correlation between permeability and sand resistivity for shallow penetration depths, and (3) that the water saturation for an oil sand can be determined from the measured sand resistivity after making suitable corrections for sand thickness. The procedure in the last method depends on a correction for thickness factor and a theoretical curve. The accuracy of the theoretical curve is now being tested in the laboratory Introduction In an effort to place the analysis of electric logs on a quantitative basis, there is need for a better understanding of the many factors that influence an electric-log curve. During the past several years has occurred what, in the light of future events, may aptly be called the rebirth of the acid Bessemer process. The increased attention given to the technical and metallurgical details involved in the production of Bessemer steels has been exceedingly fruitful, and indicates the value of further research and p1ant development. In times like these, when the steelmaking capacity of the country is operating at a maximum rate to supply materials for the national defense program, it behooves the Bessemer operator not only to strive to increase production but also to maintain a high standard of quality. The opportunity is ripe, it seems, to recapture fields of application once considered the birthright of Bessemer steels, but supplanted in recent years by open-hearth grades. This involves cooperation all along the line, from the blast-furnace operator to the metallurgical contact man and salesman. The metallurgist's part in this program involves the study of the many steelmaking variables and the measures necessary to ensure constancy in the finished product. It is equally important that the knowledge gained be disseminated widely to ensure the wise application of Bessemer steels in new fields. The merits of Bessemer steels for certain work are well understood. The combined properties of good weldability, machinabil-ity and stiffness are unique and fully explain the strong entrenchment of Bessemer steels in certain fields; e.g., skelp for small butt-weld conduit, screw steels machined in automatics, and certain tin-plate applications. It is the purpose of this paper to review briefly the physical properties of Bessemer steels as contrasted with those of open-hearth steels, to discuss control measures now employed in the making of Bessemer steel, and to consider the advantages derived from the use of these control measures. Physical Properties oF Bessemer vs. Open-hearth Steels A number of Bessemer blows and open-hearth heats were tested for tensile strength, ductility and impact strength. The steels selected were confined to sections from 3/4 to 1 1/4-in. diameter, inclusive, and the carbon content covered was sufficient to yield parallel ranges in ultimate strength for the comparison. Other factors, such as the extent of deoxidation of the steel and variations in chemistry, were kept as comparable as possible. Machined test pieces of 0.505-in. diameter with an 8-in. gauge length were pulled. The data obtained are shown in Fig. I, ultimate strength being plotted against carbon content. This graph shows that for equivalent carbon content Bessemer steel has on the average 15,000 lb. per sq. in. greater tensile strength and, conversely, for the same tensile strength Bessemer steel requires on the average 0.14 per cent less carbon. The average phosphorus content for the Bessemer steel was 0.090 per cent,

FOR the past four years the management of the Black Hawk Consolidated Mines plant at Mogollon has conscientiously kept accurate records pertaining to cost of operation and the performance of certain equipment. These records have been valuable in coordinating the work in the mine, mill and power plant. Also, as to quantity and kind of equipment and supplies most suitable from the standpoint of economy and dependable operation, they have served as a guide. Through comparison with records at other mines, where the same things are being done in a different way, they have pointed out mistakes to be avoided. No outstanding accomplishments, either in costs or performances, are revealed; in fact, some of the results are perhaps quite inferior to those obtained at similar plants, but it is with the thought that more records should be published for the benefit of the mining profession that the author presents these data. To other operators and to mining engineers who are called upon to make estimates for prospective operations, the information herein should be helpful. GENERAL CONDITIONS Mogollon is in the southern part of Catron County, southwestern New Mexico. It lies near the western border of the Mogollon Range, 14 miles east of the Arizona line. Silver City, 80 miles to the southeast, is the nearest railroad point. The connecting road, over which supplies are hauled into camp by trucks, is an improved highway for about 50 miles; the remainder consists of graveled roads and unimproved steep mountain grades. One general supply truck and one tank truck make daily round trips. Hauling of supplies to the mine has cost at the rate of $0.08 per ton-mile; or, on the basis of ore production, $0.30 per ton mined. Lumber, hauled in from local mills, has cost an average of $30.00 per 1000 board feet, $8.50 of which has been for hauling. The annual consumption averages 108,000 board feet. Lime, hauled from a plant in Arizona, is about the only other item not brought out from Silver City. Fuel oil for the generation of power is the item of greatest hauling expense, the f.o.b. Mogollon cost of approximately $0.06 per gal. being nearly twice the f.o.b. refinery price. Water for power plant, mill and camp use flows to camp storage tanks through a 4-in. pipe line from a spring and intake 3 miles up Silver Creek Canyon. A few times, particularly in the month of June, mill operations have been suspended for two or three days because of water shortage. This graph shows that for equivalent carbon content Bessemer steel has on the average 15,000 lb. per sq. in. greater tensile strength and, conversely, for the same tensile strength Bessemer steel requires on the average 0.14 per cent less carbon. Deposits of high-silica kaolinite clays occur at many places in central Pennsylvania. These white clays were formed apparently by weathering of argillaceous quartzite and limestone. Their geology, distribution and use have been reported by Leighton.1 The larger deposits have been mined from time to time, and the clay, after washing to remove coarse sand, has found use as rubber filler, foundry clay, and in white cements. In general, the clay from these deposits contains too much grit (quartz) to be useful as paper filler, and the silica content is too high to make it useful as china clay for ceramic ware. Gravity methods for the separation of quartz from these clays have failed because of the extremely fine size of the quartz grains, but by the methods of froth flotation described in this paper these sandy kaolins can be made to yield a purified kaolinite that has a chemical composition close to that of good-grade Georgia kaolins, and is free enough from grit to be used as a paper filler. As by-products of the separation, a fine (— 325-mesh) sand assaying 95.5 per cent SiO2, and a very he (—3-micron) clay are produced. The possible ceramic uses of these products are being investigated at The Pennsylvania State College. Experimental Procedure The Sample.—The clay sample used in these tests was obtained from a small mine near Tyrone, Pa. It had already been washed to remove coarse sand, and represented the finished product of this small mine and washery. Microscopic examination showed that the clay was composed almost entirely of the minerals quartz and kaolinite, and that the quartz was present mostly in particles larger than one micron, while the kaolinite particles generally were less than 20 microns in size. The kaolinite and quartz particles were physically separable by blunging the clay in water with a suitable dispersant. Preparation of Flotation Feed.—By the addition of NaOH in an amount equal to 3 lb. per ton of solids, the clay was completely dispersed in water. Flotation feed was prepared by allowing a dispersed suspension (10 per cent solids) of the clay to stand for the period of time required for a 2.5-micron particle of quartz to settle from the top of the container to the bottom. After this settling period the suspension was decanted from the settled solids. The settled solids were redispersed in water and the separation was repeated once. The two fine fractions were then combined. Thus the clay was divided into a fine and a coarse fraction by size separation at approximately 2.5 microns.* The fine fractioh was found to have a considerably lower sand content than the raw clay (Table I), and was not treated further. Up to the present time, according to Hansen1 and Haughton,2 the constitution of the bismuth-indium system has not yet been published. The generally accepted value for the melting point of indium, as listed in most scientific journals and textbooks, is 155°C. Recently, however, H. M. Davis3 has determined a new melting point for indium of 257.3°C ± 0.1°C. Since bismuth has been used in preponderance as an alloying element in the majority of low-melting alloys, and indium has been used with considerable success in lowering the melting points of low-melting alloys,4,5 an interest has been developed in the application of these two metals, making a complete knowledge of the constitution of its alloys desirable. In this investigation, the melting point of indium reported by H. M. Davis has been found to be substantially correct. A value of 157.2°C ± 0.5°C was determined. The two eutectic compositions have been placed at 34 and 50 pct bismuth with their respective eutectic temperatures as 72.4'C ± 0.5°C and 90°C ± 0.5°C. The bismuth-indium phase diagram has been determined by thermal and microscopic analysis and is shown in Fig I. THERMAL ANALYSIS Granulated bismuth and indium shot, having a guaranteed purity of 99.99 and 99.95 pct, respectively, were melted in a carbon crucible by means of a laboratory heater. To minimize oxidation of the alloys, a heavy mineral oil (Nujol) having a high flash point was used. A platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouple 0f fine wire encased in a thin-walled Pyrex glass tube, about 1/8 in. in diameter, was connected to a type K potentiometer for temperature measurements. The thermo-couple was calibrated against the melting points of tin, bismuth, and the silver-copper eutectic and the boiling point of water. Since the temperature readings could be reproduced to 0.2°C, and the accuracy of the temperature standards in this range is slightly better than 0.5°C, it seems reasonable to assume that the temperature readings are reliable to approximately 0.5°C. The cooling rate could be controlled by varying the amount of insulation surrounding the crucible. Three or four layers of asbestos paper, 1/16r, in. thick, sufficed to give a cooling rate of from 1° to 2°C per minute. Undercooling was slightly noticeable. This condition was minimized by vigorous stirring, since the advantage of using slower rates was too small to justify the greater expenditure

This paper presents a theory for estimating the rate of gravity drainage of a liquid out of a sand column. Account is taken of the variation in permeability to the liquid as the saturation in the upper part of the sand becomes less than 100 pct. The theory is confirmed by previously published experimental data. Introduction Petroleum engineers have expressed the need for 4 theory of gravity drainage. Brunner,' in particular, has pointed out that some type of mathematical theory is necessary to begin the application of laboratory data to field problems. Muskat and his associates2'3-4 have recently made contributions to the theory of gas-drive behavior and have indicated an intention to apply their methods to water-drive systems. No theory of gravity drainage rates has been developed, however, and it seems desirable to formulate one at this time. Differential Equations of Capillary Flow The flow of liquids in partially saturated porous media has been studied by many investigators.6-10 Richards6 presented derivations of fundamental differential equa- tions governing two-phase capillary flow; and used simplified forms of those equations in solving a steady-state problem. Muskat and Meres6 presented and used equations different from those of Richards. Their equations did not explicitly involve capillary pressure gradients; but included, on the other hand, terms expressing the effects of the evolution of gas from the liquid phase during flow. Leverett8 stated in 1940 that "previous work on the flow of fluid mixtures in porous solids [had] failed adequately to account for all of the three influences that cause motion of the fluids: capillarity, gravity, and impressed external pressure differentials." Leverett's basic equations, however, were specialized forms of the general equations of Richards,5 which had actually taken account of the three influences mentioned by Leverett, but had not been used in a problem involving all three. The fact is that our knowledge of capillary flow and our ability to express this knowledge in differential equations exceed our ability to solve the equations except in a few cases. General differential equations have usually been of little more than formal value. In solving practical problems, it has been necessary to develop specific equations, preserving terms that involved the factors important in those problems, and purposefully neglecting other terms that were not of predominating influence. This is the method followed here. It is believed that the solution of the particular problem and the scheme of the solution itself are new.

Ltd., in 1934, and Johnson's Co. Ltd., in 1941. The production by caving prior to 1949, in round figures, has been 14,500,000 tons of ore by The Asbestos Corp. and 5,500,000 by Johnson's Co. They are the only caving operations in asbestos at the present time. Since it has been the subject of a number of technical papers, this contribution is offered as a review of progress. Some introductory information seems appropriate, for few members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers are familiar with the mineral, or how asbestos deposits differ from others in caving characteristics. Asbestos is found in peridotite, a basic intrusive rock irregularly altered to serpentine and erratically fractured, well enough to cave in bulk, but leaving many blocks of solid ore of all sizes scattered through the deposit. Chrysotile is the variety of asbestos produced in Canada. Its fibers are the most valuable commercially, having a good proportion of long fibers, strong, silky, flexible, and suitable for spinning. The fibers occur in all lengths, from the microscopic to 3 in., or more, the shorter are more abundant. Their values depend on length combined with other qualities noted above. They occur as veinlets filling fissures in the peridotite, with crystals compactly arranged in parallel across the cracks. They are sometimes lightly frozen to the walls but the partings are distinct, often marked by particles of magnetite adhering to the fiber ends. Sometimes they break away from the rock in slabs an inch or more in thickness. In wide fissures the fibers are not always continuous, the "broken fibers" being separated by lines of parting with occasional scattered grains of magnetite, which is an injurious mineral to be elirninated when possible. In addition to the chrysotile ''Cross fiber," some "slip fiber" is found in fault fractures in limited quantities of less valuable character. With the exception of the Asbestos Corp, ore, in which the content is said to be more uniform, asbestos is eccentrically distributed through the peridotite. It is the general impression that the higher grades are more often found in hard rock. There are rich pockets and leaner areas which range down through various grades to minor barren sections. Wholesale mining is necessary to make sure of recovering all the high grade for there are no reliable indications of its existence. Ore selection only appears in constructing assay-grade limits for caving. The mill yield of the Thetford ore body in 1934 was 6 to 10 pct of the ore milled, made up of all classes, with occasional runs up to 15 pct or so. US underground mine production of nonfuel minerals was 153 million tons of crude ore in 1971, according to a recent US Bureau of Mines report compiled by Dravo Corp. Underground capacity includes all nonfuel mineral commodities and is distributed into three general categories: (1) metallic ores; (2) nonmetallic ores; and (3) construction materials, such as clay, sandstone, and limestone. All three categories are produced by a combination of open-pit and underground methods. While US underground mining represents only 5.9% of total domestic capacity, it is significant in the types of products produced. Domestic supplies of potash, trona, A lead, zinc, sulfur, and fluorspar are almost exclusively recovered from underground mines, as well as a significant portion of the gold, silver, molybdenum, and salt supply.

Electrowinning U.S. 4,066,520 - Recovery of copper from copper sulfide ore. Finely divided ore concentrate is leached with moderately strong sulfurous acid to solubilize copper ions, the leach solution treated with calcium sulfite to reduce the copper ion concentration by forming copper-precipitate solids therein, the solids filtered off, and and the filter cake dewatered to obtain a slurry of copper-precipitate solids amenable to direct electrowinning of copper therefrom using a described electrolysis apparatus which utilizes high current flow with a minimum of mechanical agitation.
