TRONA, Calif., is a miniature urban community of some 3500 people, located on the northwest shore of dry Searles Lake in the extreme northwest corner of San Bernardino County, approximately 186 miles north and east of Los Angeles. Since it is situated on the Mojave Desert, a typically desert climate prevails with wide variations in temperature between day and night, extreme daytime summer heat, and cool to cold winters. Rainfall averages somewhat less than 4 in. per year, and dust storms are common. The rate of evaporation, .however, is great, amounting to 6 to 9 ft of water per year. The extremely low humidity makes the summer heat of 110°F tolerable with only a mild, temporary discomfort. Nature of Deposit During the periods when Searles Basin was flooded, the waters that passed through Indian Wells Valley spread out to form a broad, shallow lake providing, in effect, a settling basin for suspended sediment. The drainage into the deeper and more isolated Searles Basin thus was clarified to a great degree before concentration began. Today, the elevation of the dry surface of Searles Lake is 1618 ft, and the salt deposit measures 5x7 miles. At the eastern and northeastern margins of the main playa zone and just at the foot of the alluvial slope of sand and coarser wash from the Slate Range mountains, a rim of crusted salts rises a few feet above the level of the flat. The deposit is a saline efflorescence composed of salts that were presumably brought up with rising ground waters to be deposited at the surface by solar evaporation. This deposit consists chiefly of trona, and it is after this Trona Reef that the town Trona was named. Strip mining operations have been conducted in the past at infrequent intervals for the recovery of crude trona salts. The main focal point of interest in Searles Lake from a commercial standpoint is the main salt body located almost centrally in the basin. The exposed portion of this porous saline deposit covers approximately 12 sq miles and averages 71 ft deep. Its interstitial voids, which constitute 50 pct of the total volume, are permeated with a brine, which is in equilibrium with the soluble salt deposits. The brine is the raw material for the operations of the American Potash and Chemical Corp. plant at Trona, shown in Fig. 1. The soluble salt deposits are of interest for their potential values in future technologic development. The brine, which is stratified according to slight differences in density, stands usually within 6 in. of the surface of this exposed, firm, salt body. The surface is usually dry and will support the weight of heavy mobile units and drilling equipment. Occasionally, however, surface waters from the higher watersheds encroach upon the main salt body during infrequent periods of precipitation on the surrounding mountains. This water dissolves surface salt, becomes a dilute brine, and has been observed to stand as high as 18 in. above the salt surface when undisturbed. Windstorms will shift the water back and forth across the lake surface. The exposed salt body is surrounded by additional submerged areas of commercial soluble salt deposits covering some 20 sq miles, hidden from view by marginal playa mud. These vary in depth up to as much as 30 ft. Thus, the outline of exposed and submerged salt deposits of commercial value is estimated to cover a total area of 32 sq miles, which is roughly circular but slightly elongated from northwest to southeast. It has been estimated that each square mile contains about 100 million tons% f alkali salts. The results of drill borings in the past 15 years have brought to light the interesting fact that the main salt body lies superimposed on an impervious mud deposit from 10 to 15 ft thick containing relatively little soluble salt. Under this deposit lies a second soluble salt body 35 ft deep. The lower salt body is interspersed with numerous insoluble mud lenses and its composition is considerably different from that of the primary, or main salt deposit. Recent drill borings have not penetrated beyond 300 ft. They have, however, revealed that underlying the lower salt body, the mud sediments carry deposited minerals of trona, nahcolite, mirabilite and much less soluble carbonates or sulphates of calcium and/ or magnesium. This structure is shown in Fig. 2. Current Lake Survey Program Several hundred holes have been drilled in the deposit. However, to carry out a thorough and carefully correlated study of the composition of the soluble salts and other minerals in the dry lake basin, a drilling program was inaugurated recently and is now nearing completion. In this survey, pattern drill holes are sunk at regular lh-mile intervals to a depth of approximately 150 ft. Drilling equipment consists of a No. 51 C. P.

The effects of mutual interactions between elements on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing chrormium, columbium, molybdenurn, nickel, or silicon have been determined. The equilibrium nitrogen solubilities in the liquid iron alloys were measured by the Sieverts method. The second-order effects caused by the presence of chrormium, columbium , or silicon in the melt were found to be significant. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing several alloying elements has also been measured as a function of melt temperature and nitrogen pressure. The heat of solution of nitrogen in microcomponent iron alloys has been found to be a function of the logarithnz of the activity coefficient of nitrogen, irrvespectilje of the composition of the melt. The heat of solution of nitrogen in pure liquid iron was determined to be 1265 ± 450 cal per g-atom of N over the temperatxue range 1600° to 1800°. Sieverts ' law was obeyed for all melt compositions studied in the pressure interval 0.4 to 1.0 atm. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid pure iron and in many dilute binary liquid-iron alloys has been the subject of many investigations. Pehlke and Elliott' made a comprehensive investigation on this subject in which they summarized and compared previous researches. However, the practical application of these solubility studies requires prediction of the nitrogen solubility in the multicomponent alloys encountered in operating practice. The interaction parameter as defined by wagner2 has been used to predict the behavior of a solute in a complex alloy, and a modification of this approach has met with reasonable success in several instances.'1"5 The necessity for extending the nitrogen solubility data on binary alloys is caused by the lack of direct measurements of the solubility of nitrogen in molten alloy steels. A direct comparison between measured solubilities and those predicted for multicomponent alloys based on data in binary systems has been made in only a few instances, and most of these were reviewed by Langenberg,6 who developed a graphical technique for predicting nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys. The solubility of nitrogen has also been studied over the entire Fe-Cr-Ni ternary system by Humbert and Elliott.? Both studies compared the solubilities computed from binary iron alloy data with those measured in ternary alloys in the liquid state at 1600°C. Most of the nitrogen solubility measurements referred to above were for iron alloys at 1600°C; thus, the ability to predict nitrogen solubilities in molten iron alloys has been restricted primarily to alloys at 1600°C. Recently, Nelsson8 devised an approximate method for calculating the change in nitrogen solubility in molten iron alloys as a function of temperature, but an assumption of regular solution behavior limits the applicability of the method. Chipman and Corrigan9,10 have developed an empirical correlation. based on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in the iron alloy at 1600°C, which facilitates the estimation of nitrogen solubilities at higher temperatures. This method also has limitations, due to the necessity of calculating the activity coefficient for nitrogen in a multicomponent iron alloy at 1600°C from the nitrogen solubility data for binary iron alloys. The shortcoming of such a straightforward approach to the problem of predicting nitrogen solubilities is the disregard of mutual interactions between elements in a complex iron melt. This investigation was conducted in an attempt to provide a more reliable method of predicting nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys. The effects of the mutual interactions between chromium, nickel, silicon, molybdenum, or columbium in iron were studied, using the Sieverts' technique1,7 to measure the effects of alloy composition, temperature, and pressure on the solubility of nitrogen in ternary liquid iron alloys.

Experiments in the form of aging of overstrained tension specimens and elevated temperature tension testing, have been carried out on recrystallized arc-cast molybdenum. The aging behavior of molybdenum was found to be strongly dependent on the degree of plastic strain present in the lattice: the reason for this being the low solid solubility for the common interstitial elements in molybdenum. IMD THE term strain aging is familiar in connection with the recovery of the yield point in mild steel after tensile overstraining, and there are other instances where it is known to exert an appreciable effect on mechanical properties. For example, steel exhibits a greater tensile strength at mildly elevated temperatures than at room temperature and serrated stress-strain flow curves occur under certain conditions. It has been known for a number of years that the phenomenon of strain aging is directly connected with the presence of carbon and nitrogen in the lattice; and extremely small amounts of either element are sufficient to produce the effect. A method has been developed for evaluating acid treatments in fractured limestone fields by breaking down pressure drawdown into three component parts: (I) pressure differcntial across "skin" near the borehole face, (2) pressure differential due to flow resistance in the coarse communicating fissures and (3) pressure differential between the fine voids and the coarse fissures. It is apparent that in most successful acid treatments the first term, skin resistance, has been reduced or eliminated. Further, it is often possible to estimate the volume of coarse fissures associated with the second term, coarse fissure flow resistance. In cases where this volume is comparable with practical acid volumes it seems likely that this resistance also may be attacked with a suitably retarded acid. INTROD UCTION Acid treatment has been successfully applied as a general practice in the limestone wells in the Mara/ Maracaibo districts of Venezuela for some 10 years. At the same time the need has been felt for a more precise method of: (1) evaluating the effect of an acid job and (2) selecting wells which should benefit from an acid treatment. The following method, based on an analysis of build-up curves for wells producing from fractured limestone, provides a means of forecasting the effect acid will have on a well and in many cases the probable order of production rate increase which may be expected. In certain cases it is also possible to calculate the fissure volume through which the acid has to be displaced for best results. Various approximations are introduced in the method, but within the limitations of these the analysis gives an indication of how a well, whether previously acidized or not, may be expected to respond to acid treatment. Suitable build-up curves cannot be obtained on "tight" wells which do not give sustained production and the method is not applicable to such wells. Figs. 1 through 7 illustrate various types of build-up curves obtained from limestone wells in Western Venezuela. Curves are included showing (1) both skin and coarse fissure resistance, (2) skin resistance only, (3 and 4) reduction of skin resistance by acidization, (5) fissure resistance only, (6) reduction of coarse fissure resistance by acidization, and (7) acidization failure. This theory has been successfully applied for over three years during which 22 acid treatments have been carried out specifically to reduce skin resistance and three treatments to reduce coarse fissure resistance. The method has been found to be a useful aid in the selection of wells for acidization.

The first use of graphite is lost in the mists of time. It was used by primitive man to make drawings on the walls of caves and by the Egyptians to decorate pottery. As early as 1400 A.D. graphite crucibles were being made in the Haffnerzell district of Bavaria. Through the Middle Ages graphite was confused with other minerals, especially galena and molybdenite. Two common names that are still used for the mineral are "Plumbago," meaning leadlike, and "Black Lead." The latter name implied that graphite is either composed of lead or at least contains a large percentage of it. Gessner is credited with having recognized it as a separate mineral in 1565, but its composition was not determined until 1779, when Scheele demonstrated that graphite oxidized to carbon dioxide, thus proving its carbon constitution. In 1789, Werner named it "graphite" from the Greek word "graphein," meaning to write. The United States has long relied on foreign countries for its graphite supplies. This reliance has been due more to the lack of suitable domestic graphites than to any particular preference for buying minerals overseas. Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) graphites were imported as early as 1820, and Madagascar graphites have been imported since the properties on that island were opened up about a hundred years later. Mexico has long supplied the United States with most of its requirements for amorphous graphite. Physical Properties and Classification Graphite is found in laminated, flaky aggregates disseminated in schistose rocks. It also occurs in veins and exhibits a foliated or fibrous structure. Graphite is a black lustrous mineral that crystallizes in the hexagonal system, with rhombohedral symmetry. The crystals have tabular form and are six-sided; the faces are commonly striated. The flakes have perfect basal cleavage and are opaque. When well crystallized, the flakes have a black metallic luster while the amorphous material is black and earthy, with a microcrystalline compactness. The flakes feel greasy. Graphite is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It melts at approximately 3550°C at a triple point under 1250 psi. It sublimes between 3300-3500°C at 14.7 psi. At 3726°C a second triple point occurs at approximately 100,000 atmospheres. Thermal oxidation in the presence of oxygen begins at 300°C and the rate increases with temperature. The three forms of carbon (charcoal, graphite, and diamond) are distinguished by chemical and physical tests. The specific gravity of charcoal is 1.3 to 1.9, of graphite 2.266 g/ cm3 (crystal density), and of diamond 3.5. Graphite has a hardness of 1 to 2 (Mohs' scale). Natural graphite can be divided into three classes: disseminated flake, crystalline vein (fibrous or columnar), and amorphous. Flake graphite is a lamellar form found in metamorphic rocks, such as marble, gneiss, and schist. Each flake is separate, having crystallized as such in the rock. Crystalline vein graphite is found in the form of well defined veins or as pocket accumulations along the intrusive contacts of pegmatites with limestones. The graphite of such deposits is of two types, foliated and columnar. The important Sri Lanka (Ceylon) deposits are vein type. Amorphous graphite is commonly found as minute microcrystalline particles more or less uniformly distributed in feebly metamorphic rocks, such as slates and shales, or in beds consisting practically entirely of graphite. The latter usually are metamorphosed coal seams and carry as much as 80-85% graphitic carbon, while the former, being altered carbonaceous sediments, commonly range from 25 to 60%

The orebodies of the Hecla mine are from 3 to 40 ft. wide, dip not less than 70°, and in most cases are nearly vertical. The Hecla and Intermediate orebodies are generally associated with a lamprophyric dike, usually about 2 ft. wide, but which attains a maximum width of 7 ft. The ore appears on either or both sides of the dike. The country rock is Burke quartzite with no definite walls and a tendency for nearly horizontal, but irregular, quartz stringers to run from the lode into the walls. This latter condition prevails almost entirely in the hanging wall, causing a natural tendency for portions of the wall to "offset" and resulting in an extremely heavy side pressure. The fact that there are no definite walls causes a great variation in the width of the stopes, as stringers will run into the walls for irregular distances. The ore occurs as galena in varying widths and grades. It is often necessary to mine a face having a " horse"' of waste between two stringers of ore. This block of waste might be 6 or 7 ft. wide but with the Hecla method it is necessary to mine the entire face. In this case an effort is made only to shatter the waste, allowing for easy sorting underground. The Hecla mine requires a flexible system allowing for the extraction of ore from varying widths, with the necessity of close filling to give the needed protection from side weight. About 15' per cent. of the material broken in the face is sorted as waste, either at the face of stope, or in the sorting plant. Shafts, Drifts and Crosscuts The outside dimensions of the shaft are 19 ft. 4 in. by 7 ft. 2 in. The shaft consists of three working compartments, two for the hoisting of ore and one for auxiliary work. The working compartments are 5 ft. 2 in. by 4 ft. 4 in. inside measurement. The rest of the shaft is used for pump column, electric cables, and ladderway. (See Fig. 6 for framing of timbers.) The shaft is about 700 It. from the orebody for topographical reasons. Solid formation was not reached in shaft for 80 ft. Timbers in this section became alternately wet and dry on account of seasonal changes

A microscope objective of given numerical aperture, when used with light of given wave length, has some fixed limit of resolution. This may be expressed as potential resolving ability—the ability to resolve is inherent in the lens but whether this limit is achieved in practice is quite another matter. Nearly 50 years ago Abbe evolved theoretical considerations which indicated that the ability of a lens to resolve detail is directly proportional to twice the numerical aperture of the objective and inversely proportional to the wave length of the light used. It is true, unquestionably, that as the numerical aperture of the objective is increased the potential resolving ability of the lens is increased and likewise when the wave length of the light used is decreased, the degree of resolution is increased. Whether Abbe's formula expresses the exact relationship is not a matter of great concern. It suffices to know that to improve resolution, other things being equal, two avenues of approach are available. Either the numerical aperture of the objective may be increased or the wave length of the light decreased. With the apochromatic system it is possible to employ successfully wave lengths from 400 to 500 uu and still secure reasonably short exposures. The present limit for numerical aperture is 1.40 N. A. although objectives of 1.60 N. A. are now an experimental possibility for metallurgical work. Thus certain well defined limits are set for those who work within the range of the visible spectrum. In order to take advantage of the increase in resolving power which accompanies a decrease in the wave length of light employed, Dr. A. Kohler and Dr. M. Von Rohr of the Zeiss Scientific Staff developed the "monochromats." These are quartz objectives corrected for the single wave length 275 uu which lies in the ultra-violet region of the spectrum. They also developed a series of quartz oculars and a complete photo-micrographic equipment with which to use the quartz optics. Quartz must be used for the optical parts because glass absorbs ultra-violet light almost completely. Thus there was made available about 20 years

The apparent vapor pressures of a number of metal sulphides were determined by measuring their rate of weight loss when they were heated under vacuum. The calculated pressures are due in some instances to the volatility of the sulphide and in others to the decomposition pressure. FIE direct reduction of metallic sulphides, as in the precipitation method for lead or antimony, is not a widely used process today. However, it might be employed for the production of a number of metals if the operation were carried out under reduced pressures. Two general procedures are possible; the reducing agent could form a stable nonvolatile sulphide from which the valuable metal could be removed by volatilization or liquation. The other approach would be to choose a reducing agent which would form a sulphide that could be volatilized away from the valuable metal. A vacuum operation would serve to protect the sulphides and metals from oxidation and would increase the evaporation rates. A related process is the separation of metallic sulphides by selective volatilization either at atmospheric pressure or under vacuum. This procedure is already used commercially for the elimination of lead and cadmium as PbS and CdS from zinc calcines; it might well have other applications. To predict such processes it is necessary to know the relative volatilities of the metallic sulphides and to know whether they volatilize as sulphides or whether the predominant weight loss is due to decomposition. Such data would also be of value in studying problems such as the use of sulphides for refractories, as described by Brewer,] or in the evaluation of the theory of ore deposition from the vapor state, as proposed by Brown.' Qualitative statements concerning the volatility of metallic sulphides can be found frequently in the literature and are well summarized by Mellor, but accurate determinations of rates of evaporation or vapor pressures are very scarce. Kelly" lists vapor pressure data only for PbS; his reference being to the work of Schenck and Albers,4 who measured the vapor pressure of PbS by a dynamic method between 850" and 995°C. More recently Veselovskii5 has determined the vapor pressures of the sulphides of antimony, lead, cadmium, and zinc at temperatures ranging from 360" to 1000°C using Knudsen's method. A second Russian worker, Pogorelyi,6 determined the vapor pressures of CdS and ZnS at temperatures from 900" to 1250°C. The results obtained by these workers are shown in subsequent graphs in comparison with the data of this paper. Brewer and coworkers1 have studied some of the metallic sulphides to determine their suitability as refractories in vacuum. Veselovskii's determinations on PbS checked well with those of Schenck and Albers, and his determinations of CdS check almost exactly with Pogo-relyi. For the vapor pressure of ZnS the data of Veselovskii and that of Pogorelyi are in fair agreement, as shown in Fig. 1, but it should be pointed out that Lumsden7 has discovered that the equation given by Veselovskii for the vapor pressure of ZnS: - 14,200 log P9.495 is in error by a factor of ten when compared to the experimental data. In contrast with the scarcity of data on vapor pressures, the decomposition pressures of many metal sulphides have been determined and are summarized by Smithells.8 Theoretical Considerations The experiments described in this paper consisted of determinations of the rate of weight loss of certain metallic sulphides under very low pressures at different temperatures. These data plus observation and analyses of the products reveal the mechanism of the weight loss and also provide a basis for the calculation of the vapor pressure or apparent vapor pressures of the sulphides.

The demands for increased productivity on the 1967 coal industry have generated new operating trends and fresh approaches to old methods, which have enabled the industry to keep pace with the expanding economy. Changes, while not radical in concept or design, have been plentiful and are marked by the refinement of the already tried, tested and proven. Perhaps not since World War II have there been demands on equipment manufacturers to design and deliver such diversified types of machines as those required by the industry in the past year. Equipment developments-following a plan which calls for higher productivity, lower maintenance costs and greater machine availability- have tended more toward increased horsepower and heavier, more rugged equipment. Electrical and mechanical components, designed in many instances with maximum reliability rather than initial costs as the main criterion, have contributed to the improvements in over-all performance. High-strength, specialty steels are finding use in a wide range of equipment applications. The horsepower capacity of electric motors being installed is more frequently being rated on a continuous basis rather than the former one hr or less and, as a result, fewer failures now occur because of overloading. These developments reflect the pyramiding cost of equipment down-time and represent definitive progress in reducing the magnitude of the problem.

Bond type simulated closed-circuit grindability tests and batch grindability tests were run on six pure minerals plus a limestone and a taconite ore. The simulated closed-circuit tests were made at five different meshes of grind. The minerals tested varied widely in hardness and breakage pattern. For all simulated closed-circuit tests both Bond and Holmes work indices were calculated and compared. The Bond grindability testlm6 has been widely and quite successfully used for predictions of such items as ball mill power requirements and as an aid in plant comminution equipment selection. The test is interesting in that although run as a series of batch tests it is over-all a simulated closed-circuit test with a circulating load of 250%. The simulated closed-circuit feature is probably the primary reason for the notable success of the test. Perhaps the major criticism that can be brought against the test is that it is time consuming, since it normally takes a trained technician about an eight-hour shift to perform it.4 For many purposes this is an acceptable time requirement. However, if a grindability test is to be used for mill control purposes it should be performed in as short a time interval as possible, preferably under an hour. Sometimes in industry strictly batch tumbling mill tests are run and an attempt is made to correlate such batch tests with plant mill operation. Then an attempt is made to adjust operating tumbling mills based on data from the tests. The tests, however, frequently do not correlate well with operating data. The purpose of the present work was to explore some of the similarities and differences between a simulated closed-circui.t grindability test and a batch type test. Six different minerals plus a limestone and a taconite ore were tested in the experimentation. These materials varied widely in hardness, breakage characteristics, etc. Standard dry Bond grindability tests were mn on all materials at 48, 65, 100, 150 and 200 meshes of grind. Feed material was prepared by stage cmshing to -6 mesh. Initial feed volume was 700 cc. Care was taken to maintain the standard constant weight (about 20125 gm) and number of balls (283) during all the tests. Rotational speed was 70 rpm. Table I lists the materials studied along with pertinent data regarding the materials and Bond grindabilities obtained. In addition, dry batch tests were performed on all materials. These tests were made in the same mill as was used for the Bond tests. An identical ball charge and an identical feed volume were used. After rotating the mill for a predetermined number of revolutions at the same rotational speed as for the Bond test, the material was removed and separated from the ball charge. A screen analysis was performed on this product. Knowing the original size distribution of the feed and the size distribution of the product, it was possible to calculate the grindability or grams of a particular mesh produced per revolution of the mill. After the screen analysis of the product, the various fractions were recombined and placed back in the mill for further grinding. After grinding for additional revolutions of the mill the procedure was repeated. Thus, it was possible to obtain grindabilities for each material at a number of meshes of grind and for various revolutions of the mill. Grind-abilities obtained from batch tests are shown in Table 11. COMPARISON OF BOND AND BATCH GRINDABILITIES Figs. 1A through 1D show relationships between batch and Bond grindabilities. Figs. lA, lB, 1C and 1D show respectively graphs indicating the relationships for batch tests run for 100, 300, 500 and 700 revolutions of the mill. For a particular material on each graph, points are shown for 200, 150, 100, 65, and 48 meshes of grind except for several missing coarse meshes of grind for galena which did not fall conveniently on the figures. For each material and graph the point nearest the origin is for 200 mesh, the next for 150 mesh, the next for 100 mesh, etc. Considering Fig. lA, it is interesting to note that all relationships shown are essentially straight lines. Using three-dimensional, stress-deformation rate equations for a Bingham plastic, an approximate solution for the laminar flow of drilling mud between the drill pipe and casing is given for the case when the velocity gradients due to axial flow are large compared to velocity gradients due to rotation. INTRODUCTION The fact that drilling mud can be treated, to a first approximation, as a Bingham plastic has been established by several investigators12,3,4,5. A Bingham plastic is a material that is rigid until a certain combination of stresses exceeds a critical value. When the stresses are sufficiently high to initiate flow, the reduced stresses have a constant ratio to the corresponding deformation rates at each point. Prediction of pressure and torque requirements to produce the desired flow of the material have been made by analytical solutions due to Bingham6, Reiner7, and Buckingham8. One part of the present means of calculation that requires clarification is the flow between the drill pipe and casing. Present methods treat the flow resulting from the rotation of the drill pipe separate from the flow produced by the axial pressure gradient. Since the non-linear behavior of a Bingham plastic implies that solutions cannot be superposed, the present analytical investigation was undertaken to obtain a solution to the problem of combined axial and tangential flow. Equations have been proposed for the three-dimensional flow of a Bingham plastic9,10,11 and it has been shown that the proposed equations lead to the usual solutions from the one-dimensional theory". Applying these equations to the flow between two concentric cylinders the problem of axial flow only13 and tangential flow only12 have been solved. In addition to the separate problems of axial and tangential flow between concentric cylinders, the authors have determined the relationship between external torque on the inside cylinder and axial pressure gradient necessary to initiate flow". The solution given in Ref. 14 points out the complexity of the present problem. The problem considered here is the case of simultaneous axial and tangential flow. The axial flow, necessary to keep the drill bit free of removed material, results from the axial pressure gradient. Tangential flow is present since the drill pipe rotates in the hole. The solution given here is valid when the shear stresses in the drilling mud due to rotation are small compared to the shear stresses resulting from the axial flow. This case for laminar flow can be encountered in oilfield drilling. STRESS-DEFORMATION RATE EQUATIONS A detailed derivation of the equations governing the behavior of a Bingham plastic is given in Ref. 10. This section briefly outlines the physical reasoning leading to this three-dimensional formulation of the stress-deforma-tion rate law. Experiments on a certain class of materials have demonstrated the following properties: (1) when a certain combination of the stresses is below a critical value no deformation of the material occurs, (2) to a first approximation this combination of stresses is independent of the hydrostatic pressure (negative average normal stress), (3) if flow occurs the ratio of the reduced stress to the corresponding deformation rate is constant at each point of the flowing material, and (4) incom-pressibility. For the one dimensional case of shear deformation, Bingham6 formulated the governing equation as dxx, = 0 for sxx < to and µdxx = s xx = to for sxx to , . where dxx is the shear deformation rate, sxx the shear stress, to the critical shear stress, and p the slope of the sxx vs dxx curve for dxx > 0. Fig. 1 shows the behavior for pure shear between two parallel plates. Taking into account the physical properties given above and assuming the critical combination of stresses to be measured by the octahedral shear stress, the fol-lowing three-dimensional equations have been proposed.

OIL quenching of steel, in good commercial practice, is carried out using a great deal of agitation in the quenching bath. Many of the tests reported in the literature represent the results obtained on steels quenched into still oil. Scott1 describes three stages of cooling in liquid quenching baths, namely: "State `A&apos;-Vapor Blanket Cooling-In this, the first stage, a thin stable vapor film surrounds the hot metal. Cooling is by conduction and radiation through the gaseous film and is therefore relatively slow. "Stage `B&apos;-Vapor Transport Cooling- Termination of the `A&apos; stage is marked by wetting of the metal surface. Vapor forms copiously in bubbles and is carried away by gravity and convection currents to condense in cooler surrounding liquid. This is the fastest stage of cooling. "Stage `C&apos;-Liquid Cooling--The `B&apos; stage ends as the surface temperature of the metal approaches the boiling point of the quenching liquid. Vapor no longer forms, so cooling is by conduction and convection and the temperature difference is greatly decreased. This mode of cooling is slower than that of the `B&apos; stage." Mechanical agitation of the quenching medium will accelerate all three stages of cooling. The greatest effect, however, will be noted on stage `B&apos; because the removal of the bubbles from the surface of the steel will not be entirely dependent upon gravity and natural convection currents. The method employed in this investigation for evaluating the oils was the end quench test. The various oils were substituted for water as the quenching liquid and hardness determinations were made at various distances from the quenched end. Most of the tests were run using a 3/8-in. orifice with a 2 ½ -in. stream height. However, to check the effect of other velocities two additional conditions were used, namely: (I) A 3/8-in. orifice and 1-in. stream height, and (2) a ½ -in. orifice and a 3 ½ -in. stream height. In all cases the samples were suspended so that the quenched end was ½ -in. above the orifice. The steel used was an NE 9450 having the following analysis: [ ] Some tests were run on an NE 8740, 3312, and a 4340 steel. The results obtained on these steels confirmed those obtained on the NE 9450 and have therefore been omitted&apos; from this paper. The distribution of manganese and oxygen between molten iron and FeO-MnO-SiO2 slags not saturated with SiO2 has been determined and used to calculate activities of MnO and SiO2 in MnO-SiO2 slags. These were found to be intermediate between the corresponding activities in FeO-SiO2 and CaO-SiO2 slags. THE equilibrium constant for the reaction between molten iron containing manganese and slags containing FeO and MnO, namely: FeO(slag) + Mn = MnO (slag) + Fe(1iquid) is most conveniently represented by: (MnO) Kmn== (FeOHMn] [Fe] is omitted, since for dilute solutions of manganese in iron, afe is approximately constant. When activities are used for (MnO), (FeO) and [Mn], Kmn is a true equilibrium constant and will apply to all types of slags, but when weight percentages are used, the values obtained for Kmn for different slags vary considerably. The equilibrium between iron containing manganese and relatively pure FeO-MnO slags has been investigated by several workers;1-4 the most recent investigation reported is that of Chipman, Gero, and Winkler.4 Their results, corresponding to slags containing up to 4 pct SiO2, were represented by the equation: 6440 log KMn = +2.95 In this case both slag and metal may be assumed to be ideal solutions, therefore the values of Kmn so derived represent the true constant for the manganese reaction. As the molecular weights of MnO and FeO are almost equal, weight concentration of these oxides may also be used in the above expression. Acidic oxides such as SiO2 and P2O5 affect the activities of FeO and MnO differently, so that when total concentrations by weight of FeO and MnO are used in the above expression for Kmn the values obtained are no longer constant. These will be denoted by K&apos;mn. Körber and Oelsen5 investigated the manganese reaction using silica-saturated iron-manganese-silicate slags and found: 7940 logK&apos;mn =3.172 This corresponds to Kmn values much higher than those obtained for pure oxide slags. The results of Körber and Oelsen, and Chipman, Gero, and Winkler are summarized in Table I. In the present investigation it was decided to study the manganese reaction using iron-manganese-silicate slags not saturated with silica, and which fell mainly between the orthosilicate join 2FeO . SiO2 - 2MnO.SiO2 and the FeO-MnO side of the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. It has been shown" that the phases present in solidified slags of this part of the diagram are (FeO, MnO) and (2Fe0.Si02, 2Mn0-SiO,) solid solutions. Such an investigation would be of interest in deoxidation and also gives information on activities in liquid slags. This equilibrium has not as yet been investigated successfully. Hilty and Crafts7 attempted to examine this reaction in a rotating crucible furnace, but were unable to obtain suitable slag samples. In the present investigation one series of experiments was carried out in a rotating crucible furnace, because the success of Taylor and Chipman8 with such a furnace in their study of oxygen distribution between molten iron and (CaO, MgO) — FeO-Si0, slags suggested that it would minimize contamination of the slag by the crucible material. A second series was carried out using a wire-wound resistance furnace. Rotating Crucible Furnace Experiments In all cases the metallic charge consisted of 800 to 1000 g Armco iron containing 0.02 pct C, 0.03 pct Mn, and traces of Si. Manganese and silicon additions consisted of electrolytic manganese (99.9 pct)

Soon after the search for uranium ores on the Colorado Plateau began in earnest, thousands of feet of drill core ranging from 1 1/8 to 2 1/8 in. diam became available for study. Although significant advances had been made in the technique of quantitative gamma-ray borehole logging, instrumentation was in the development stage, and complete reliance could not be placed on gamma-ray logs alone to interpret quantitatively the meaning of radioactivity in a drillhole. A method that would be faster than chemical analysis and still give reproducible and reliable results for various drill core sizes was desirable to provide additional information on the enormous footage of drill core being accumulated. A solid phosphor scintillation drill core scanner was designed and constructed. Basically the instrument was developed to measure radiation from a drill core which would not be clearly recorded by a gamma-ray logger using a Geiger tube as the sensitive element. Such data would be beneficial in constructing isorad maps to delineate ore-bearing zones. A calibration in the range 0.01 to 0.1 pct eU.,O, was provided; above 0.1 pct eU3O8 gamma-ray logs were available and were being used to calculate grade and tonnage of ore reserves. The core scanner, however, has been used to estimate equivalent uranium content of ore-grade materials containing as much as 2.2 pct eU3O8 with an accuracy of ± 10 pct, the sample being in the form of a BX drill core. Actually, an apparent calibration of eU3O8 vs counts per unit time is a straight line with a slope that is a function of the sensitive element and the geometry of the counting assembly. A true calibration that will show the expected departure from a straight line is due principally to the random nature of the pulse from a radiation source and the nonlinearity of the electron circuitry. Design and Construction: Three methods of detecting radioactivity were considered and applied in developing the core scanner now in use: 1) the Geiger tube, 2) liquid scintillation phosphors, and 3) solid scintillation phosphors. The desired sensitivity and long-term drift characteristics needed for this operation could be attained only by using solid scintillation phosphors. All three methods are discussed. Before scintillation counters were common, nine beta-gamma sensitive Geiger tubes 7/8 in. diam by 12 in. long were used, arranged to surround the drill core with tube axes parallel to the axis of the core. This arrangement of Geiger tubes was en- closed in a lead shield 1 in. thick, and provision was made to slide a 6-ft length of drill core manually into the counting chamber, one foot at a time. A count for each segment was taken with a scaler while the core remained stationary. The equivalent uranium content of the different sections of drill core could then be estimated with the aid of a calibration curve of counts per unit time vs percent equivalent uranium (eU). In rare cases the effects of the radioactivity concentrated in small areas within the core introduced errors in the readings made with the Geiger tube arrangement owing to the geometry of the measurement. The variability of counting rate due to a localized concentration of radioactivity in a spot in the wall of a drill core is illustrated in Fig. 1. This effect and the inherent low efficiency of the Geiger tube were considered major disadvantages of this counting arrangement. When liquid scintillation phosphors became available the core scanner in Fig. 2 was constructed to make a more accurate measurement of the equivalent uranium content of a sample. This instrument contains about 4 liters of liquid phosphor in a stainless steel coaxial cylinder 1 ft long, with inner and outer walls 0.060 in. and 0.125 in. thick, respectively. Four end-window type photomulti-plier tube with cathodes of 2 in. diam, immersed in the solution at right angles to the axis of the core, were used to observe light flashes in the phosphor. The liquid phosphor offered equal sensitivity to radiation originating at any point in the enclosure and represented geometrically the optimum in design. However, providing a semi-permanent leak-proof seal between the glass envelope of the phototube and the metal walls of the container proved to be a serious problem in constructing the equipment. The most effective seals were especially machined O-rings from sections of large tygon tubing. The tygon took a permanent set owing to cold flow characteristics and in most cases sealed completely. The light absorption characteristics of the liquid phosphor changed gradually with time, and after one month the counting rate had decreased to half the original value. The most sensitive liquid phosphor tested proved to be a solution containing 4 g of 2.5-diphenyloxazole and 0.01 g of 2-(1-naphthy1)-5-phenyloxazole per liter of toluene. With fresh solution in the chamber and with all photomultiplier tubes operating in parallel, the counting rate contributed by any one of the four photomultiplier tubes was about 85 pct of the counting rate from a single tube operated individually. From these observations it was concluded that owing to coincident loss and light attenuation within the liquid phosphor, the apparent sensitivity could not have been materially increased by additional phototubes. In 1926 Gendersl reviewed the existing theories of this subject and stated his views in support of the gas-pressure theory. Again, in 1937, the subject was thoroughly reviewed by N. B. Vaughan3 and by Phillips and Brick,2 so that no résumé is called for here. The purpose of this paper is to describe certain observations made in the course of mill work, and to point out that they mostly tend to confirm the gas theory of Genders. Vapor Segregation There is, however, one type of inverse segregation that can be accounted for by considering the volatility of one of the constituents of an alloy. The most familiar case is ordinary brass, which is subject to a zinc enrichment of a few tenths of a per cent at the surface of a chill casting. This has been noted in 70-30 brass by Genders, and a typical example of it is given in Table 1, which represents a cylindrical billet 7 in. in diameter by 55 in. long. After lathe-turning 1/32 in. from the surface, the remaining distance to the center was sampled at six equally spaced intervals. the lead, which is essentially the same throughout, will be mentioned later. Consider a brass-mill mold, either round or rectangular in cross section, standing several feet high. It may require a minute or two for pouring. Before it is full, the metal in the lower end has partly solidified and contracted somewhat away from the mold. The initial shell of solidification follows not far behind the top of the column, even if the central portion is liquid for a long way down. There is, then, a space between metal and mold that is filled with zinc vapor. The vapor has no exit, because the liquid at the top of the rising column is not only in contact with the mold but keeps UP a fresh supply of zinc vapor, which has, perhaps, already begun to condense in the lower portion. The cycle is short. Within a minute or two after the mold is full the bar has cooled enough to condense all the zinc. Some of it may condense on the mold; it might be expected that most of it would condense there, but the mold at that time is well coated with a velvety carbon residue from the oil dressing, overlain by fluffy zinc oxide that commenced covering the inside of the mold as soon as pouring began. The clean skin of the freshly cast brass offers a preferred surface for condensation. Reabsorption is quick and inevitable.
