The effect of grain size and specimen dimensions on the occurrence and magnitude of a yield point drop in pure iron has been examined. The tests were done at room temperature. The results indicate that gain size is the critical factor determining whether a yield drop occurs. The specimen diameter:gain size ratio does not influence the magnitude of the yield drop for the range of gain size and specimen diameters investigated. HUTCHINSON,' petchY2 and worthington3 have investigated the grain size dependence of the upper yield stress (uUYP) and the yield point drop, ouyp - aLYP, in Armco iron, mild steel, and Si-Fe, respectively. These authors used center-annealed wires to avoid stress concentration from specimen shoulders and to ensure uniformity of the applied stress. Coarsegrained specimens show no yield point drop; the yield point drop then increases as d-'I2 increases (where d is the grain diameter). These results can be understood in terms of Petch's analysis2 in which the magnitude of amp depends on the strain rate in the (limited) number of grains deforming plastically at the upper yield point. If N grains per unit volume are undergoing plastic deformation, the strain rate in the deforming grains is l/Nd3 times higher at the upper yield stress than when the whole specimen deforms homogeneously. If N is constant and independent of grain size at uUyp, then all the grains are deforming when ~d~ = 1, so there is no yield point drop. At finer grain sizes, the yield point drop is given by: where AU, is the friction stress increase corresponding to a tenfold strain rate increase. Christ, Smith, and Burton studied the upper yield point in 0.050-in.-diam wire specimens prepared from zone-refined iron. Each end of the 2; -in. specimens was soldered to a & -in. diam steel ball and the load applied through the two balls. There was a yield point drop in specimens with grain diameters less than 0.1 mm; no drop was observed in specimens of grain diameter greater than 0.1 mm that were free from veining substructure, but specimens of grain diameter 0.129 mm, annealed in the y range, showed an upper yield point. and this was associated with the presence of a veining substructure in these specimens. Christ et al. suggested the upper yield point occurs when more than a specific number of grains fill the specimen cross section so a multiplicity of slip is required to initiate plastic deformation. Table I summarizes the published data on the grain size at which the yield drop disappears. On the basis of this data the ratio of specimen diameter:grain diameter = 5 to 27 appears to be the critical value for the occurrence of a yield point drop. Thus, petch2 interprets the appearance and magnitude of the yield point drop in terms of the limited number of grains deforming plastically at uuyp, whereas Christ et a1. consider that the occurrence of the yield drop depends on the ratio specimen diame-ter:grain diameter. The published data cover a wide variety of materials so some variation between the results is to be expected, but the size range covered in the data of Table I is rather limited. The problem of rock behavior under concentrated loadings has been the subject of a number of studies in the past and has been receiving increasing attention by rock mechanics investigators in recent years. Its application covers various fields, but main interest in its solution has arisen in connection with the problems of drilling, bearing capacity, and rock testing. These widely different purposes and fields of interest probably have been one of the reasons why, in spite of the large amount of published experimental data and several theoretical studies, there are still many points which need further clarification. Another reason for this situation undoubtedly is due to the fact that the rock behavior in indentation is complicated by a great number of influencing factors. Experimental evidence shows that, depending on the rock type (mechanical properties, porosity), environment (ambient effective pressure, pore fluid, temperature), and the type of loading (indenter shape, initial embedment, load level, loading rate), the rock response to indentation may vary within very large limits. The widely different rock behavior has made it impossible up to now to treat the problem with a consistent single mathematical theory, but has required instead a series of simplified models covering only certain most important events in the failure sequence. As far as the theory of rock indentation is concerned, this chapter does not add much new information. Its main purpose is, however, to state the indentation problem in a general manner and to indicate which points need to be studied in more detail before its definite solution is attempted. Also, since excellent reviews of the state-of-art of rock indentation in drilling have recently been given,1-4 this will not be repeated here, and only references pertinent to the points of the problem under study will be quoted. SEPARATING a mixture of particle sizes of material suspended in a liquid medium is by no means an exact science. Selecting machines for individual classifying operations is even more difficult. The plant operator's own background is of course invaluable, and considerable help may be obtained from technical articles, talks with sales engineers, and handbooks on ore dressing. These several sources of information, however, are difficult to marshal in proper perspective for the major decision on classification units that an operator may be called upon to make. To the present writer's knowledge this assembly of facts is not available in handbooks, and technical papers are scarce on classification equipment developed in the past five or six years. It is believed that this paper will be helpful to users of classification equipment at this particular period in the development of hydro-classification. For easy reference the following classification units now available and in use in metallurgical and industrial operations are listed below, with a brief description of each. Unit-type classifiers, bowl classifiers, and bowl desiltors are all rectangular tanks, slightly tilted, with reciprocating rakes or screws to remove settled sands. The unit-type classifier, Figs. 1 and 2, is available in widths from 14 in. to 20 ft and lengths up to 40 ft. The shallow bowl of the bowl classifier, Fig. 3, equipped with rotating rakes, is superimposed on the lower end of the tank. Reciprocating rake compartments for this design range from 18 in. to 20 ft wide. Bowl diameters vary from 4 to 28 ft. The flat-bottomed bowl of the desiltor, Fig. 4, of relatively large diameter, is equipped with rakes rotating outward and partly over a pit, which is created by extension of the rectangular tank into and under the bowl section. Bowl desiltors are available with reciprocating rake sections 4 to 20 ft wide and bowls from 20 to 50 ft in diam. The bowl desiltor is used for applications beyond the range of the bowl classifier. The hydroseparator, Figs. 5 and 6, is a circular tank equipped with slowly rotating rake arms, set on a slope, with interrupted rake or spiral blades to move the settled solids to a central discharge cone. Tank diameters vary from 4 to 250 ft. Tank depths at center are 2 to 3 ft for small units and up to 25 ft for larger units. Hydraulic classifiers of the sizer and super-sorter types, Figs. 7 and 8, are narrow, deep, rectangular tanks divided by vertical baffles into a series of pockets. Hydraulic water is added near the bottom of each pocket. Perforated constriction plates, spiral flow arrangements, or jets are used to disseminate the water under pressure (hydraulic water) throughout the bed of material in the pocket. Discharge valves on each pocket are operated automatically by a pneumatic mechanism, a pincer-type mechanism, or a pressure control and motor combination actuated by a hydrostatic tube within the pocket. Hydraulic classifiers are available in 4, 5, 6, and 8-pocket units of varying constriction plate areas to suit conditions. There is now a jet sizer of unit pocket design that can be made up in 1 to 25 sections or more to accommodate sizing requirements. The hydroscillator, Fig. 9, is a rectangular tank set on a slope of 3 to 4 in. per ft. A bowl is superimposed on the lower end. The bowl bottom is an oscillating rubber-covered disk, perforated to allow hydraulic water introduced beneath the disk to set up a teeter bed and thus produce an oversize or rake product exceptionally free of slimes, and material minus the mesh of separation. A shallow dam at the periphery of the bowl allows the coarse or oversize fraction to spill over and drop down into the tank compartment, where it is moved up the deck by reciprocating rakes. The material, minus the mesh of separation, overflows a circular and stationary weir which is several inches higher than the dam on the oscillating disk. It is carried off in a circular launder in the usual manner. These units are available in bowl diameters from 4 to 14 ft and with reciprocating rake compartment widths to suit the tons per hour to be handled. Centrifugal classifiers include the solid bowl centrifuge and the cyclone classifier. The solid bowl centrifuge, Fig. 10, consists of a truncated cone fixed to a horizontal shaft and rotating at high speed. An internal spiral rotating at slightly less speed continuously removes solids deposited on the inner surface of the cone, or bowl. Feed enters the cone by means of the hollow center shaft. Overflow leaves through ports at the large end of the cone, and oversize solids, moved by the spiral, exit through ports at the small end. Centrifugal classifiers of this type are available in cone diameters from 18 to 54 in. The cyclone classifier, Fig. 11, is a stationary cone having a cylindrical upper section and a lower cone section. Feed is introduced tangentially into the upper cylindrical section under pressure from a hydrostatic head or by means of a pump. Centrifugal force thus induced effects a classification within the cone, the fine sizes being carried off in the overflow through an opening at the top of the cylindrical section. Coarse solids at relatively high pulp density exit through a control valve at the apex of the lower cone section. Cyclone classifiers are available in 3, 6, 12, 14, 24, and 30-in. diam. The cone classifier, Fig. 12, is a steel-plate cone with sides usually about 60" from horizontal. It contains no rotating mechanism. Feed enters a feed-well at center and classification is effected by gravity and pulp density. Fines are carried off in the flow over a peripheral weir at the top of the cone. Settled solids exit through an opening at the apex. An apex valve actuated through levers and rods by the pulp density in the lower cone section is usually supplied. Diameters are usually maximum at 8 ft.

Observations by transmission electron microscoPy of the microstructures in quenched Fe-A1 alloys provide the basis for revision of the Fe-A1 phase diagram. The diagram is characterized by first-order transitions between the disordered ferromagnetic a! solid solution and the two ordered phases FeAl and Fe3Al. However, second-order transitions showing corre-luted fluctuations in the degree of order near the critical temperature occur between the paramagnetic a! and FeAl and the FeAl and FeAl phases. ELUCIDATION of the true nature of the Fe-A1 equilibrium diagram has proven to be an extremely challenging problem as evidenced by the fact that six quite different versions of the iron-rich portions have been published since 1958.&apos;-6 The most recent diagram shown in Fig. 1 was proposed by Rimlinger6 based on X-ray diffraction analysis and dilatometry. He shows the single-phase fields of the ordered phases of the types FeAl(L20) and Fe3A1(D03) and the disordered bcc Fe-A1 solid solution, a, separated from one another in every case by large two-phase regions. Thus, he implies that in Fe-A1 alloys ordering always occurs via a classical phase transition. In contrast to this view, theoretical studies3&apos;" have concluded that the transitions a — FeAl and FeAl — Fe3A1 should be second- or higher-order in character. A further revision of the Fe-A1 diagram of state is presented in Fig. 2 based on our previous8,9 and current observations by transmission electron microscopy of the microstructures found in quenched specimens. The average quenching rate was 50,000°C per sec and although this was sufficiently rapid to prevent Fe3A1-type ordering below -550°C it was not sufficient to suppress ordering of the type FeAl in the temperature range -650" to 800°C. However, ordering during the quench is easily recognized since the FeAl phase formed during holding at temperature rapidly develops large antiphase domains whereas FeAl formed during quenching has a very fine domain size, -50Å diam. Each symbol in Fig. 2 indicates the result of a micro-structural examination of specimens heat-treated (-1 hr) until equilibrium was established. The results will be discussed in the order of the points, A - Dl marked on both diagrams with reference to the phase fields, critical temperature, and "transition" ranges, respectively. The dark-field micrograph corresponding to point A is shown in Fig. 3 and was obtained using a 111 reflection of the Fe3A1 structure which reveals both a&apos;/4<111> and a&apos;/2<100> antiphase domain boundaries.10 The structure observed in this specimen is typical of single-phase Fe3A1 and shows no evidence for FeAl or any other additional phase. The dark-field micrograph shown in Fig. 4 corresponds to point B on the two diagrams. It was taken with a 100 FeAl reflection which reveals a/2(111) domains and exhibits the typical structure of single-

The existence of petroleum in the rocks of Ohio and Indiana seems to have been first shown by wells dug for salt. The fuel, however, was objectionable owing to its odor and inflammability. Not until the Drake well was drilled in 1859 did the people appreciate the value of rock oil, and then they at once began plans to secure the coveted fuel. The first successful well in these two states was near Macksburg, in southeast Ohio, where at a depth of 59 ft. (17 m.) oil was found in commercial quantity (1860). A year later this fuel was secured on Cow Run, in the same county, and at about the same time in Noble, Morgan and perhaps other counties in that part of Ohio. The second great step in the production of oil in Ohio and Indiana was taken in 1884 when the reservoir of natural gas in the Trenton limestone of northwest Ohio was tapped, and where a year later oil was secured in the same formation. Petroleum in this limestone was obtained in Indiana in 1889.&apos; The third step in the production of oil in Ohio and Indiana is associated with the Clinton sand of Ohio. Natural gas in large volume was discovered in that rock at Lancaster, in 1887, and the area has been extended until it has become the largest individual producer in the world. The presence of natural gas in such great volume all but demonstrated to the driller that oil lay hidden near by. Soon the search for it was started but not until 1899 was petroleum in commercial quantity found in the Clinton sand, and a large pool was not located in it until 1907. The fourth step in the developrllrnt of the industry was taken in 1913, when the pool in Sullivan County, in western Indiana, was opened. The producing rock is the Huron sandstone, which is the topmost member of the Mississippian system.²

Production of crude petroleum in Mexico during 1936 totaled approximately 40,309,000 bbl., showing a negligible increase over the previous year. While only four producing wells were completed in the Poza Rica area in 1936, its production increased from 9,468,000 bbl. in 1935 to 13,417,000, making it the ranking producing field in Mexico. This gain in output, however, was offset by abnormal losses due to artificial curtailment mainly the result of strikes and other disturbances in the heavy-oil district of the Northern fields, which declined 2,500,000 bbl., and in the South fields (Golden Lane), where output decreased 1,500,-000 bbl., while production in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec fields remained practically stationary. Production of natural gasoline for 1936 is estimated at 800,000 bbl., or 200,000 bbl. greater than in 1935. Crude run to stills in local refineries increased about 1,000,000 bbl., totaling 31,000,000 bbl. for 1936. Exports of crude and refined products were approximately 24,400,000 bbl., or over 2,000,000 bbl. greater than in 1935, the increase representing withdrawals from storage in Mexico. Exclusive of ships&apos; bunkers, domestic consumption increased about 1,000,000 bbl. during the year, reaching an estimated total of 15,200,000 bbl. The Mexican domestic demand for gasoline is estimated at 2,540,000 bbl. for the year, an increase of 310,000 bbl. over 1935. In all, 70 wells were completed in Mexico during 1936, as compared to 74 in 1935 and 148 in 1934. In proven areas 59 completions resulted in 31 producers and 28 failures. Unusual results were obtained during the year over a scattered area in northeastern Mexico near the United States border, where out of eight completions six were fair-sized gas wells. A wildcat dry hole was completed in Chocoy in an attempt to extend the Northern fields to the northeast, and another in Quebrache, to the southeast of the heavy-oil district. A deep test (10,168 ft.) through the Cretaceous lime into the Jurassic was completed as a dry hole in Metlal-toyuca, 9 miles southwest of the Old Alamo field on the Golden Lane.

THE problem of segregation and cavities in steel ingots is a subject which has given and is still giving metallurgists, en¬gineers, and operators matter for serious consideration.. This question has come more into prominence lately in the United States, clue largely to the desire of railroad engineers to secure a better rail than they have obtained in the past, as the service they demand is increasing in severity; and no doubt manufacturers will be able to meet what is required of them. The rails here are as good as those made in other countries, but the conditions of service and the extremes of climate are more severe and consequently more breakages occur. Various reasons have been advanced to explain why rails may not be as good in quality to-clay as in the past. Some engineers consider that modern methods of manufacturing, designed chiefly to obtain large output, tend to reduce the standard of excellence of more deliberate methods. Others think that 4-ton ingots are worse than those of 2 tons. Again, it is .stated that the 100-ton heat in one ladle is too large, and is a :step in the wrong direction in casting. My experience upon the question of the size of the ingot is that in rolling rails of from 85-to 100-lb. sections, the range of ingot is only practically such that the difference in the size does not help in the question of segregation, cavities, or blow-holes.

This investigation attempts to describe and simulate the alcohol displacement process by means of a cell model, as employed in chemical engineering practice. The proposed model is more simple than previously proposed models. and utilizes parameters chosen on a theoretical basis. The model successfully reproduced the formation of the stabilized bank and the breakthrough of alcohol, the latter depending on one of the model parameters, which may be correlated with the length of the porous medium. Moreover, the effects of the phase behavior of the liquid system involved, as observed in experimental studies, were reproduced. Several variations of the basic model were devised and tested on a digital computer. These included the cases in which: (1) the actual value of fractional flow was used in cell-to-cell computations; (2) the number of cells was varied within the same run; and (3) incomplete rather than complete phase equilibrium was assumed within each cell. The proposed cell model clarifies the basic mechanism of the process. Detailed concentration profiles obtained for each cell, for instance, showed the mechanism of bank formation in relation to the phase behavior characteristics. The results obtained indicated a varying degree of phase equilibrium concommitant with changes in the velocities of the phases in an actual alcohol displacement. This condition was approximated by changing the number of cells during the simulation. Interesting information was obtained on the influence of path length on the efficiency of alcohol displacement, which has been the subject of some controversy. Certain limitations preclude the use of the proposed model as a substitute for experimental studies. The results obtained were, nevertheless, of value in interpreting the experimental results. INTRODUCTION During recent years considerable effort has been directed toward an understanding of alcohol displacement, the process whereby oil and water are recovered from a porous medium by the continuous injection of a solvent. The complex nature of the physical process involved has so far defied a complete mathematical treatment. Other methods of approach, amounting to an overall material balance, have been proposed, yielding useful information on certain aspects of the process.1-3 Taber et al, in particular, defined the displacement mechanism in terms of the phase behavior of the alcohol-oil-brine system invoIved.2 Wachmann reported a mathematical treatment of alcohol displacement subject to certain simplifying assumptions? Donohue proposed the use of a "cell model" for simulating alcohol disPlacement.5 The nature of the assumptions involved limited the utility of the model. The present work attempts to examine the variables involved in the simulation of alcohol displacement and discusses several possible versions of the basic cell model. Under certain conditions the model results are similar to the experimental results. In particular, the spontaneous formation of of the stabilized bank and the effects of the system phase behavior were successfully reproduced. PREVIOUS WORK ON CELL MODELS Cell models and the theoretical plate concept are often used in solving chemical engineering problems in which an explicit mathematical solution may be difficult or impossible to obtain. Examples of such applications occur in distillation, gas-liquid chroma tography,6 reactor technology, absorption, etc. In petroleum engineering, such a model was used by Attra7 to describe non-equilibrium gas drive, and by Higgins and Leigh ton8 to calculate sweep efficiency in water flooding. Aris and Amundsen pointed out the equivalence between the diffusion model and perfectly mixed cells connected in series.9 Deans proposed a three-parameter cell model to simulate two-component

The earlier struggles in petroleum geology were directed to solving the Qrigin and method of accumulation of petroleum. We are now fairly well agreed on those subjects. Most of us think that the great mass of petroleum commercially produced comes from plants or animals, or possibly from both. We are confident that the oil was not produced where it is now found but has accumulated in reservoirs of various kinds. The types of reservoirs are certainly variable but they just .as certainly follow definite geologic laws. Some of these types of reservoirs can be determined from surface study; others cannot. We know, too, that these types of reservoirs (largely structures such as anticlines, domes, and terraces) are much more widespread than the oil pools. In other words, there are many places where good sands and good structures exist but where oil is not found. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to attempt to analyze, from a regional standpoint, some of the conditions that control the presence or absence of oil pools and to group them in a regional way, hence the term "Petroliferous Provinces." The paper lays no claim to presenting new facts but attempts to group and classify the information that so many have expressed again and again. The essential factors for an oil field are petroleum, a reservoir material, and conditions under which the petroleum can enter the reservoir but cannot escape except through the drill holes. The paper will first discuss the source of petroleum as it occurs in definite regions, then the regional arrangement of reservoir strata, and finally the areal arrangement of structures. To have petroleum, there must be a source. Since living matter is considered the source of the petroleum, geological conditions must have been such that living organisms were abundant. Arid regions on the earth&apos;s surface have not given rise to living things in sufficient abundance to produce oil; similarly, too cold regions and saline inland lakes. Considerable research has been conducted in Iowa in recent years on carbonate aggregate reactions in concrete. Groups outside the state have become active in the past few years after recognizing that certain carbonate aggregates are reactive in concrete. The paper reviews the nature and extent of the problem and a summary is given of research by the author and his associates. In recent years considerable research has been conducted in Iowa on carbonate aggregate reactions in concrete. The research is part of a general study on the behavior of carbonate rocks as concrete aggregates sponsored by the Iowa State Highway Commission. Research on carbonate aggregates has not been extensive in the past. Laughlin1 published one of the first papers on carbonate aggregates in 1928 and was followed by others, notably H. S. sweet,&apos; B. Mather et al.,3 and K. Mather4 who emphasized the petrographic and physical aspects of carbonate aggregates. The recognition that certain carbonate aggregates are reactive in concrete has led to increased participation in research in the past few years by groups outside of Iowa. Significant contributions have been made by Swenson and Gillot,5 Hadley,6 and Chaiken and Halstead7 in work which emphasizes the expansion of carbonate rocks in alkaline environments and the reaction of carbonate minerals or dedolomitization with alkalies. It is the purpose of this paper to review briefly the nature and extent of the problem and present a summary of the research by the author and his associates. EXTENT AND NATURE OF THE PROBLEM The problem is the deleterious behavior of certain carbonate aggregates in concrete. It was first recognized in Iowa over 20 years ago when poor service records of certain highways were correlated with aggregates produced from the Glory and LeGrand quarries. Deleterious behavior of carbonate aggregates have been reported in Canada and, more recently, in New York and Virginia. As more knowledge is gained concerning the problem, distress in concrete related to carbonate aggregates may be recognized over a widespread area. The problem may potentially exist in the Midwest, the Northeast, and other parts of the country underlain by thick sections of carbonate rocks readily available for utilization as aggregates. The nature of distress in Iowa highways is a general weakening and deterioration of concrete characterized by progressive cracking and spalling away from joints and edges (Fig. 1). The distress generally occurs after 15 years of service and becomes progressively worse. Specimens of such concrete lack the toughness of sound concrete and break easily under the hammer in the manner of a soft brick. The matrix is generally highly carbonated and dark borders, or reaction shells or rims outline the argillaceous carbonate aggregate fragments (Fig. 2). Cracks observed in cores cut across the aggregates and concrete matrix. Although localized volume change (expansion) is associated with spalling, there is no definite field evidence in Iowa that excessive growth of concrete slabs has occurred. The experience with carbonate aggregates in Iowa indicates that the concrete deterioration is not the same as that induced by the alkali-aggregate reaction associated with siliceous aggregates. THE following experiments were conducted in order to study the influence of the rate of cooling through and below solidification on the dendritic structure (macrostructure) and microstructure of some hypoeutectoid steel. The steel selected was of commercial grade and had the following composition: C, 0.40 per cent.; Mn, 0.85; Si, 0.70; P, 0.099; S, 0.043. After melting in vacuum in an Arsem furnace, the various samples were allowed to solidify and to cool to room temperature as indicated in Fig. 1. Samples were thus obtained representing all possible combinations of slow and fast cooling through the various ranges of temperatures indicated, namely: (1), zone of solidification or primary crystallization, (2) zone of granulation, and (3) zone of secondary crystallization. The location of the different temperature zones in the iron-carbon equilibrium diagram is shown in Fig. 2. The authors adopted. Belaiew&apos;s notations. The designations of the various samples readily indicate their treatment, as will be apparent from Table 1.

(communication to the Secretary): I have read with much pleasure the interesting and valuable paper by Mr. Kunz, and hope that the following brief notes, gathered a few years ago, while a resident in Mexico City, may help to elucidate the subjcct: Turquoise.—This was known to the Aztecs as Xihuitl. Santiago Ramirez states that they found it in the Cerro Xicohtzonc, close to Atzcapatzalco, a suburb of the City of Mexico (compare page 59). Opal.—This was known to the ancient Mexicans, for they named it mezcuitlatt (compare page 63). Jade.—Under this was iucluded a third mineral, prehnite, not mentioned by Mr. Kunz. According to James D. Dana, part of the "jade " of China is prehnite; and Humboldt informs us, in his work on New Spain, that the same species of jade is known in some parts of Mexico as mahagua (majagua ?). The same writer says, in his Views of the Cordilleras, that the Aztec name Tecpatl included flint, hornstone, and green jade; and finally, in his Travels in South America," he discusses the nature of the ancient amazon-stones, and declares them to have been made out of a jade resembling " compact feldspar," one of the constituents of the gabbro verde di Corsica. IIence those stones were probably composed of nephrite. According to Humboldt, the form given to them most frequently is that of the Babylomian cylinder, longitudinally perforated, and loaded with inscriptions and figures. They were also cut by the natives into very thin plates, perforated at the center, suspended by a thread, and worn as amulets. According to the historian Clavijero, the specific name given by the Aztecs to the nephritic stone (jadeite) was Quitzalitztli,

The world&apos;s production of petroleum in 1926 amounted to nearly 150 million long tons, of which India contributed 0.72 per cent. In 1927, this figure jumped to some 172 million long tons, of which the Indian proportion, on a practically stationary production, fell to 0.64 per cent. In 1928, there was another substantial rise in the world&apos;s production, which reached the figure of over 181 million tons. In 1929, there was another jump to over 202 million tons, but in 1930 the world&apos;s production fell to about 193% million tons, in 1931 to about 187 million tons, and in 1932 to about 183 million tons, while in 1933 the production rose again to about 202 million tons, in 1934 to about 215 million tons, and in 1935 to 233 million tons1. Decreases were shown by Poland, Sarawak, Egypt, Rumania and France. All other important producers showed an increase in production, by far the largest being due to Iraq, as a result of the opening of the pipe line to the Mediterranean. The United States contributed 60.9 per cent of the world&apos;s supply in 1935, Russia 10.7 per cent, Venezuela 9.4 per cent, Rumania 3.9 per cent and Iran 3.1 per cent. In 1928, India contributed 0.64 per cent, which fell to 0.60 per cent in 1929 and rose to 0.62 per cent in 1930, 0.63 per cent in 1931, and 0.64 per cent in 1932, and fell again to 0.62 per cent in 1933, to 0.60 per cent in 1934 and to 0.50 per cent in 1935; her position on the list of petroleum-producing countries fell from eleventh in 1929 to twelfth in 1930 to 1933, her place being taken by Trinidad and to thirteenth in 1934 and 1935, owing to the production by Iraq. The production of petroleum in India (including Burma2) increased slightly from 322,025,280 gal.3 in 1934 to 322,662,336 gal. in 1935, the highest figure in the history of the industry. The increase in 1935 is due to an increase of some 4 million gallons in Assam, almost offset by a decrease of 31/2 million gallons in Burma. This increase in output in 1935 was accompanied by an increase in estimated value amounting to Rs. 22,73,550 (£170,944).

In the earlier clays, these ores were treated by chloridizing-roasting followed by amalgamation, with satisfactory results, according to the information now available. Material from old tailing dumps from ore treated by this process, which are found at several places in the vicinity of Oruro, seldom contains more than 5 to 6 oz. of silver per ton. As ore with less than 100 oz. per ton was not treated, the extraction of silver must have been good. Reports of the operating companies published about 1890 asserted that over 90 per cent. of the silver was recovered, but in these calculations, as a rule, no allowance was made for silver lost during roasting and the figure referred only to the extraction of silvcr by amalgamation from the roasted ore.

THE first pump of this character, made by H. R. Worthington, and, so far as the writer is informed, the first and only one of this kind ever constructed, is now in daily use in the above-named works. The water-pressure necessary for the working of the hydraulic machinery of this plant had been supplied, up to the time of the building of this pump, by two Worthington Duplex High Pressure Pumps, having steam-cylinders of 20 inches diameter and 12-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 72 inches diameter; eight inlet and eight outlet valves of 22 inches diameter, and pumping into a 6-inch pipe. These pumps required a large amount of steam, and, in consequence of the various additions to their duty, their capacity became far short of the work required. In preference to putting in another engine of the same class, it was decided to accept Mr. Worthington&apos;s proposition to build the compound one under description, he guaranteeing that it should be equal to the demands of the works, and at the same time cause a saving of from 5 to 6 tons of coal per day from the amount required to run the two old pumps. The new engine has been in operation about one month, and so far has exceeded the most sanguine expectations. It consists of two high-pressure cylinders of 21 inches and two low-pressure ones of 36g inches diameter, by 36-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 91 inches diameter. There are two air-pumps of 20 inches diameter by 18-inch stroke; the condenser being 24 inches diameter by 60 inches high. Both cylinders are jacketed with wood and felt, and the low-pressure cylinder also with live steam. The high and low pressure steam-cylinders are in line and immediately adjoining each other, while the inconveniences attending an internal stuffing-box are avoided by having two piston-rods for each of the low-pressure cylinders, running through stuffing-boxes on the outside of the smaller high-pressure ones. Introduction In the U.S., about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacing these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal in unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still have a long way to go and costs are very high. Another option, which appears very attractive, is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form - coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corp. has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC), a wholly-owned subsidiary. Both coal-oil mixtures and coalwater mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality metallurgical coals. There are a number of incentives for potential users of coal slurry fuels and in particular for coal-water mixtures (CWMs). First, CWM represents an assured supply of fuel at a price predictable into future years. Second, CWM is available in the near term; there are no substantial advances in technology needed to provide coal slurry fuels commercially. Third, there is minimal new equipment required to accommodate CWM in the end-user&apos;s facility. Fourth, CWM is nearly as convenient to handle, store, and combust as is fuel oil. Several variants of CWM technology could be developed for different end-users in the future. One concept is to formulate slurry at the mine mouth in association with an integrated beneficiation process. This slurry fuel may be delivered to the end-user by any number of known conveyances such as barge, tank truck, and rail. Slurry fuel would then be stored on-site and used on demand in utility boilers, industrial boilers, and potentially for process heat needs or residential and commercial heating. An alternative approach is to formulate a low viscosity pre-slurry at the mine mouth and to pipeline it for a considerable distance, finishing up slurry formulation near the end-user&apos;s plant. Finally, at the other extreme of manufacturing alternatives, washed coal would be shipped to a CWM manufacturing plant just outside the end-user&apos;s gate. Depending on fuel specifications and locations of the mine and end-user facility, any of these alternatives may make economic sense. They are all achievable in the near term using existing technology or variants thereof. The Coal-Water Mixture CWMs contain a nominal 70 wt. % coal ground somewhat finer than the standard pulverized ("utility grind") coal grind suspended in water; a complex chemical additive system gives the desired CWM properties, making the suspension pumpable and preventing sedimentation and hardening over time. Figure 1 shows the difference between a sample of pulverized coal containing 30 wt. % moisture and a CWM of identical coal/water ratio. The coal sample behaves like sticky coal, while the CWM flows readily. The combustion energy of a CWM is 96-97% of that associated with the coal present, due to the penalty for vaporizing water in the CWM. Potentially any coal can be incorporated in the CWM, depending on the combustion performance required and the allowable cost. CWMs are usually formulated using high quality steam coals containing around 6% ash, 34% volatile matter, 0.8% sulfur, 1500°C (2730°F) initial deformation temperatures, and energy content of 25 GJ/t (21.5 million Btu per st). Additional beneficiation to the 3% ash level can be accomplished in an integrated process. There are a number of minimum requirements which a satisfactory CWM must meet: pumpability, stability, combustibility, and affordability. In addition, a CWM should be: resistant to extended shear, generally applicable to a wide variety of coals, forgiving/flexible, and compatible with the least expensive processing. It was found that a complex chemical additive package and control of particle size distribution are necessary to achieve these attributes simultaneously, while maximizing coal content in the slurry fuel. Formulation of Coal-Water Mixtures A major consideration in the manufacture, transportation, and utilization of a slurry fuel is its pumpability, or effective viscosity. Most CWM formulations are nonNewtonian, i.e., viscosity depends on the rate and/or duration of shear applied. Viscosities reported in this paper were obtained using a Brookfield viscometer fitted with a T-spindel and rotated at 30 rev/min, thus they are apparent viscosities measured at a shear rate of approximately 10 sec-1. The instrument does reproducibly generate a shear field if spindle size and rotation rate are held fixed. By observing the apparent viscosities of several slurries at fixed conditions it is possible to obtain a relative measure of their viscosities for comparison purposes. A true shear stress-shear rate relationship at the shear rates at which the CWM will be subjected in industry may be obtained using the Haake type and a capillary viscometer. These viscometers are used for specific applications. However, for comparison purposes, apparent viscosities are reported.

The vapor pressure of palladium over a series of Rlz-Pd alloys has been measured by the torsion-effusion method. The thermodynamic properties of the alloy system at 1575=K have been calculated from the vapor pressure data. The activities and the free energies of formation exhibit large positive deviations from ideal behavior. The enthalpies of formation are endother-mic. The entropies of formation are positive and larger than the ideal entropy of mixing. All of the thermodynamic properties suggest that a strong tendency toward phase separation exists in the solid solutions. The possible origin of the phase instability and the various factors that influence the thermodynamic properties are discussed. RECENT studies of the thermodynamic properties of alloys of palladium with nontransition elements have indicated that a significant contribution to the enthalpy of formation is related to the redistribution of the conduction electrons upon alloy formation.&apos;-&apos; The present work was undertaken to ascertain the importance of this contribution in Pd/transition-metal alloys. The Rh-Pd system was chosen for this investigation for several reasons: 1) The thermodynamics of the system were unknown. 2) Rhodium and palladium are completely soluble at high temperatures; below 1118OK the solid solution becomes immiscible.&apos;, 3) The difference in magnitude between the vapor pressures of rhodium and palladium permitted the use of an existing effusion apparatus. 4) Additional information was known about the alloy system that would facilitate the interpretation of the thermodynamic results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thermodynamic properties of the Rh-Pd alloy system were calculated from the vapor pressure of palladium over solid palladium and over several solid Rh-Pd alloys. The vapor pressure was measured by means of the torsion-effusion apparatus that has been described previously. In this method, an effusion cell is suspended from a tungsten filament inside a high-temperature furnace. Two orifices are located eccentrically such that the effusion of the vapor creates a rotational torque in the filament. The angle of rotation is directly related to the total vapor pressure within the cell. As the vapor pressures of rhodium and palladium are approximately five orders of magnitude apart," the total vapor pressure was considered to be effectively equal to the equilibrium vapor pressure of palladium. The effusion cells were made from high-purity alumina since auxiliary experiments indicated that essentially no reaction occurs between alumina and solid Rh-Pd alloys. Unfortunately, because the orifices were irregular, an accurate calculation of the Free- man-Searcy correction factors" could not be made. The constants were determined in an independent experiment where the vapor pressure of copper, as measured in the alumina cell, was compared with an accurate value of the vapor pressure, which had been determined previously.4 Depletion of palladium from the surfaces of the specimens was minimal as the deflection of the cell remained constant, for at least 15 minutes, at each of the experimental temperatures. Lattice parameter measurements of the postrun alloys also indicated that no changes in the composition of the surfaces had occurred. The alloys were prepared by arc melting the requisite amounts of the 99.99 pct pure elements. The four most palladium-rich alloys were remelted in a levita-tion furnace since complete melting of the components had not occurred in the arc furnace. All of the alloys were subsequently homogenized at elevated temperatures in sealed alumina thimbles. After heat treatment, the alloys were analyzed chemically and were in essential agreement with the nominal compositions. The thermal histories and nominal compositions of the alloys are given in Table I. Lattice parameters of the heat-treated alloys were computed, by means of the method described by Mueller et a1. ,I2 from X-ray diffraction powder patterns obtained with filtered copper radiation in a 114.6-mm-diam Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera. The results, which are tabulated in Table I, exhibit a slightly greater negative deviation from Vegards&apos; law than the values reported by Raub et al.13 The diffraction lines were sharp and well-resolved and thus indicated that the alloys were homogenous. RESULTS The logarithms of the individual values of the vapor pressure of palladium were fit, by the least-squares method, as a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperatures. The constants of the equations are given in Table I along with the temperature range over which the data was accumulated. The latent heat of vaporization at 298.15"K for pure palladium, calculated by the third-law method,14 showed no systematic temperature dependence. The average value of 88,920 * 20 cal per g-atom agrees favorably with the average of the results obtained in the most reliable previous investigations.15"19 The activities of palladium were computed from the vapor pressure data at 1525&apos;, 1575", and 1625OK. Consistent with the mass spectrometric study of the atomicity of palladium vapor,lg the vapor was assumed to be monoatomic. The activities of rhodium were determined by integrating the Gibbs-Duhem equation with the aid of the a function.20 In the calculations, the activities of the pure solid metals were assigned the value of unity. From the activities, the partial and integral free energies, entropies, and enthalpies of formation at 1575° K were computed; they are assembled in Table 11.

The writing that is effective is woven with a fine texture into an agreeable pattern; it is free from knots, loose threads, and stray fluff. The instrument that weaves this literary fabric, whether it produce a homely sock or a lordly tapestry, a simple story or a learned &apos;Itreatise, is a disciplined intelligence, as sure as a steel needle, as precise as a swift loom. The simile breaks down at this point, for the product of the pen is instinct with the human spirit and therefore transcends in beauty anything made by a mere machine. If words are to be woven into eloquent meaning, they must be well knit. Upon the relation of words to each other and of groups of words to other groups, known as phrases, clauses, and sentences, depends the success of writing as a means of trans¬mitting thought from man&apos; to man. To be understood beyond question, you should know not only what your words denote but how to build your sentences; you must not only choose your words aright but construct your sentences properly. A sentence is a combination of words that makes complete sense; it says something about something. &apos; A clause is a subordinate sentence or a sentence within a sentence. A phrase is a group of words without a predicate; it makes sense, but not complete sense. For example: I shall wait for a few minutes before I go home: The whole statement is a sentence; "I shall wait" and "before I go home" are clauses; "for a few minutes" is an adverbial phrase. The orderly arranging of words and of combinations of words is called `syntax&apos;; and from the original Greek form, ouvaeis (suntaxis), is derived the Greek name for an editor,
