R. F. McELVENNY.- Mr. Oldright has just given me a letter to read to you, which I think it may be of interest. It is headed, "Silver Meeting Dinner". The letter is as follows: "To Members of the A. Who is particularly interested in that subject? The type of boilers is practically a standard practice now. I do not know of anybody that is using the tandem system now. No one is building a plant with a tandem system in it.

The Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory is the gift of Prof. John Hays Hammond to the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University. Professor Hammond was graduated from this school in the class of 1876, and has always shown great Merest in its welfare and progress. In 1903, he offered to build and equip for it a mining and metallurgical laboratory. This offer was gratefully accepted by the trustees; and in October of the same year the architect, W. Gedney Beatty, and I were employed to draw up plans for the building, which is the largest of its kind in this country. The Treasurer's report shows the total gift of Professor Hammond, including land, building, and equipment, to have been $128,741.53. This does not include $5,000 given by Professor Hammond to defray incidental expenses. The fruits of industry are divided between capital, labor, and governments. Capital takes its redemption and remuneration through profits or dividends; labor takes its share through wages; governments take their share through taxes. Each must have a just share, and the question of what is a just share and the question of who-shall make the allocation are vital current political and economic issues. Certain political philosophies con- tend that government should take all the fruits and that some dictator or politician should have irrevocable discretion and power to distribute the fruits. Believers in democracy and free enterprise adhere to the view that capital is entitled to redemption and fair remuneration; that labor shall have a fair wage; and that governments shall make equitable levies. But since all human beings, both individually and in groups, are inherently selfish, there are many variable views in regard to the question of what ratios shall be applied in a division of the fruits and who shall have the power to fix these ratios. Perhaps all parties should devote more energy to means of increasing the crop, and not so much time to quarreling over a division of the existing crop. Moreover, all three parties must guard against killing the goose that lays the mineral eggs. For example, if the tax burden becomes oppressive and the taxpayer refuses to carry it, then business stagnates, with consequent unemployment, reduction of profits, and curtailment of government revenue. If a producer assumes the increased tax burden, marginal operations must be closed down, and again the consequences are increased unemployment and diminished government revenue. Quite often an increase in a rate of tax results in a reduction of government revenue. Perhaps the worst detrimental feature of selfishness and greed on the part of any one of the three distributees of the fruits of industry is the retardation of expansion of the enterprise. It is well known that the oxide of beryllium was identified as a new "earth" in 17971 and the metal first isolated in 18272. The history of the many difficulties encountered by early investigators, the laboratory achievements of Lebeau3, Fichter4 and Oesterheld5, and the eventual development of methods for commercial production are well covered in the literature, particularly in the authoritative published work of Siemens and Halskes reviewing their comprehensive investigation of the element. Accordingly it has seemed desirable to restrict this paper to the properties and uses of beryllium and its alloys. PRopeRties of Beryllium A comprehensive summary of the available data on the properties of beryllium is given in " Gmelius Handbuch der Anorganischen Chemie7." The metal is steel gray in color. A fractured surface exhibits a bright luster, which does not appear to change with long exposure to air, probably because of a thin, transparent protective oxide coating. The specific gravity is approximately 1.8. Although there is no recorded actual determination of Young's modulus of elasticity, it has been estimateds, according to Fessenden's law, to be 30,000 kg. per sq. mm., or about 30 per cent higher than steel. Beryllium appears to have an electrical conductivity approximately 1/12 that of copper. The physical constants as available in the literature are given in Table 1. One of the outstanding properties of beryllium is its great affinity for oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and carbon. One gram of beryllium takes up 1.774 grams of oxygen and will liberate approximately 15.23 kilogram-calories in the combination. The metal apparently reacts with all known oxides at high temperatures; in fact, beryllium will alloy with thorium and zirconium if melted in crucibles of their oxides. The true physical properties of beryllium are still somewhat in doubt, since very small amounts of impurities appear to cause a large variation

Under the title, Labor-Saving Appliances in the Works-Laboratory, I published a paper1 in which mas described how multi-manipulations in a works-laboratory and in the furnace-room of an assay-laboratory, can be condensed into single manipulations by applying the proper mechanical devices. For example, I now deposit ill, or withdraw from, a muffle a set of 48 cupels as one unit. The front row (8) of these are blanks or heaters; the other 40, when they have attained the proper temperature in the muffle, are charged simultaneously with the 40 lead-buttons. Three manipulations here accomplish an operation which by the generally customary method requires 136, and this number is only limited by the size of muffle and cnpels. This operation is an enlargement of what I have already described in my former paper, and Fig. 1 shows the improved implements. In the paper referred to I described a gold-silver bead parting-bath, which is the last of the devices used in regular sequence in practice. This bath mas designated as being convenient, but mas not a labor-saver properly. Fig. 2 of the present paper shows a new device. Instead of the original tray, there are now sectional holders for the test-tubes, each having a wooden handle on either end, so that the holders ma?-be removed from the boiling bath, and the acid or water poured oE from each set of tubes (in this case, 7) without waiting to cool. The tubes, held in place by clutches, as shown in Pig. 3, rest in holes in the base-strip, having a smaller diameter than the tubes. Each holder is stamped at either end with a number, so that the bath becomes further useful by permitting several men to use it at the same time without interference. Apart from the handles, the holders are made of sheet-copper.

THE sinking of a new shaft at the Newport mine, Ironwood, Mich., was started in May 1931 and completed on Aug. 3, 1932. During this period, 2665 ft. of shaft in granite was completed, at an average advance of 6 ft. per 24 hr. In November of 1930, experimental work was con- ducted on 65 ft. of shaft through 22 ft. of overburden where ledge was encountered, and this work convinced the operators that all drilling could be done with vertical holes with the blasting relief to a 4%-in. hole drilled vertically in the center of the cut. The reason for not adopting the conventional V-cut was to get away from damaging the shaft steel. The blasting in a V-cut naturally tends to throw the broken material upward, but with the cut as adopted the relief was in a horizontal direction to a large extent. The scheme of mucking employed made it necessary to keep the steel shaft sets within 50 ft. of the bottom at all times. This could not be done without serious damage with a V-cut when blasting in granite. The cut as drilled also broke 10.83 ft. per round of drilling, which was considerably more than the experience with a V-cut in the same material. The extended cut reduced proportionately the delays for charging, blowing smoke and handling drilling equipment in the shaft. Another advantage was the ease in drilling vertical over inclined holes, and the preservation of the proper spacing of the drill holes at the bottom of the cut. DRILLING Air was carried down the shaft in an 8-in. flanged pipe line at a pres- sure ranging from 95 to 100 lb. This line was extended to within 100 ft. of the bottom, where a valve and a 4 by 4 by 6-ft. tee was connected to it. Flaubert, as we know, laid stress on the selection of the right word, le mot juste, the precise epithet, the word that belongs to the thing. A sentence, or even a paragraph, may be spoiled by the use of a word that is not proper, that does not fit or is foreign to the meaning intended. An Australian mining expert is reported to have said: You have a property of considerable value, and what I saw warrants a good development of very rich cubicular galena, with gossan intermixed. 'Cubicular' means `belonging to a small bedroom', a `cubicle' being a sleeping compartment. He meant `cubic', of course. This is a malapropism, and reminds me of the lady from Chicago that, on her return from Europe, said how much she had enjoyed the rural parts of France, because, among other things, it was "so delightful to hear the French pheasants singing the mayonnaise to the tune of the Los Angelus". It is impossible to amalgamate coal-tar thoroughly with the pulp in the agitating-tank. In metallurgy, `amalgamate' refers to the combination of mercury with one or both of the precious metals, forming an amalgam, which is an alloy of mercury with another metal. It differs from other alloys, such as brass or bronze, in being made without the aid of heat, inasmuch as mercury is molten at the ordinary temperature. The word comes to us from the Greek. through Old French and means `something soft'. It is a mistake to use technical terms, having a specific meaning, for purposes that are foreign to that meaning. The writer of the quotation is not discussing any combination of metals; he is dealing with the physical process of mixing and is using 'amal-

Manganese being perhaps the least expensive of the metallic alloying elements that can be advantageously added to iron in considerable quantities, the basic characteristics of its alloys with iron are properly receiving much attention at present. In the course of a dilatometric investigation of this system several years ago, the writer observed certain transformation phenomena not found in other iron-base alloys. The interpretation of those effects was not evident from the information then available, but recent X-ray studies clear up at least one anomaly and permit a more satisfactory description of the results than would have been possible otherwise. Aside from the new phenomena observed, the effect of manganese on the Arg transformation is of timely interest because of its bearing on the critical compositions of austenitic alloys, the applications of which are now being greatly extended. It is known that the properties of these alloys are unstable unless the As transformation occurs at a tem-pcrature considerably below atmospheric and that manganese is very effective in depressing the temperature of this transformation. The writer aims to establish a simple general relation which expresses the location of Ar3, quantitatively in terms of the content of the common alloying elements used in steel. A step in that direction is taken here. Early dilatometric investigations1 indicated that only one transformation other than the eutectoid A1 occurs in the high-iron alloys of the iron-manganese system. Dejean represents the Arg point as falling to 0" C. with a manganese content of 11 per cent and carbon content of between 0.30 and 0.40 per cent. Esser and Oberhoffer," sing alloys low in carbon (under 0.03 per cent), arrived by extrapolation at 14 per cent for the manganese content at which As is depressed to 0" C. At the dawning of the first century of AIME, mechanical handling of bulk materials was largely confined to movement of grain and light mill products by belt and screw conveyors, but grain handling experience inevitably led to the use of the belt conveyor for coal, ore and other heavier materials. In 1891, the first major U.S. conveyor installation for heavy minerals was completed at the Edison, N.J., plant of the New Jersey & Pennsylvania Concentrating Co. Functionally, this plant revealed its grain elevator heritage. Overlooked at the time of design or, perhaps more accurately, not fully recognized, were the dramatic differences between grain and minerals in both operating conditions of the system and the physical characteristics of the material to be conveyed. This inevitably caused problems, but from the ashes of these problems rose solutions. The Edison plant became a proving ground from which came two significant developments by Thomas Robins-the first conveyor belt designed specifically for impact loading and abrasive materials and the three-roll conveyor idler. As an installation with more than 50 conveyors in widths of 20-30 in. and belt centers of up to 500 ft, the plant was a landmark, for it established the belt conveyor as a vital method of trans- porting heavy, abrasive materials.

Forging under the hydraulic press, which was introduced by Haswell in the year 1861, at the machine shops of the Imperial State Railway Company of Austria, has since been greatly improved, so that at the present time there are very few parts of machines which cannot be produced in this way, and at no greater cost than iron castings. The process is now used at Vienna chiefly for such parts of locomotives as cross-heads, link-bars, axle-box frames, etc., especially where the form is intricate, and there are many angles and projections. These objects weigh from 50 to 150 lb. or more, and it is claimed for them that they are not only much cheaper than ordinary forgings, but are much more regular in form and stronger. The results which Mr. Haswell has attained, after years of patient experimenting, were well shown in the Austrian Department of the Vienna Exhibition by a collection of the pressed objects in iron and steel, just as they left the moulds, with some of them cut asunder longitudinally and the surfaces etched, so as to show the internal structure or direction of the grain. Through the courtesy of Mr. Haswell and his son I saw the hydraulic presses in full operation at the works, drawing down large Bessemer ingots, cutting them up into blocks of convenient size, and forming various park of locomotives. They have two large hydraulic presses in use; the largest, with a piston 24 inches diameter, gives 1200 tons pressure, and the second, with an 18-inch piston, gives 600 tons pressure. The pressure in the pumps is 600 atmospheres. The action is vertical; the piston descends upon the work, and for forging ingots is armed with a hammer-like head. An ingot of No. 7 soft Bessemer steel, which was forged in my presence, weighed 2030 lbs. One end being placed upon the anvil, the piston is brought slowly down and crowded into the mass as if it were putty or dough, forcing it each way, but chiefly in the direction of the length of the ingot, this being the narrowest section of the anvil and hammer. The piston is then raised and the ingot is moved forward for a second squeeze, and so on, until the first half of the ingot has been reduced in thickness, when it is turned on edge and the operation is repeated. During the seventeen years Fairchild has been making aerial surveys and aerial photographic equipment many changes and improvements have been made in the equipment and in the technique of using it. Aerial photographic operations have been developed from the crude methods and apparatus of wartime to a science upon which exact engineering calculations can be based. In the early days there was no airplane specially designed to meet aerial photographic requirements. One type of camera was used in all types of operations. Projects were made to conform to the products we could make and deliver. Obviously this entailed definite limitations. We now have airplanes designed specially for aerial photographic operations in accordance with the conditions encountered in actual service experience. We have cameras for every photographic purpose and our laboratory technique and equipment have been developed to the point where it is possible to make contour maps from vertical aerial photographs with contour intervals as close as five feet. Therefore, the selection of equipment now can be made in accordance with the time at our disposal, the justifiable cost, the scale desired, and the general requirements of the client. This does not mean, however, that arbitrary deliveries can be set for aerial photographic products. The factors in each project vary and each job must be considered in accordance with the factors involved. This accounts for the fact that products of aerial surveys may readily vary from $1.25 to $200 a square mile. Sherman M. Fairchild became interested in the design of a radically different aerial camera during the war. At its close he was about ready to demonstrate his design to the War Department. By 1920, he was able to bring out his first completed model. It had a number of radical features, one of which was the first dependable high-speed between-the-lens shutter, which makes for accuracy in aerial photographic work. Another feature was the use of metal throughout, eliminating the wooden parts that had been employed in wartime cameras. Another feature was the interchangeability of parts.

There is much comment at present in the ranks of the oil industry regarding unit operation of oil fields and the benefit that would accrue if it could be extensively applied. It seems certain that, as an immediate corrective of the present situation, overproduction could be effectively curtailed with all the advantages of proper conservation of petroleum resources and with no important loss to anyone connected with the industry. Unit Operation in Certain Foreign Fields Many an oil operator in America would doubtless like to have exclusive control of one or more oil-bearing structures for development in accordance with the economic position of the industry and especially in accordance with the best production practice known. A few operators now have this privilege, particularly in certain foreign fields, and are following lines of procedure which show that they are aware of the great opportunity that is theirs. We find in an article by Professor Strigeoff,1 and in a paper read by Captain Comins2 before the American Petroleum Institute, the outlines of procedure adopted, respectively, by the Soviet Government for the nationalized Russian oil fields and by the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. for its fields in Persia. Comprehensive plans for the unit operation of other oil fields may have been described publicly but no such descriptions have come to the attention of the writer. New fields are coming more and more into the hands of single operators or of a few who control large activities and who appreciate fully the need for cooperative action and are willing to forego the lure of a large quick profit from high flush production in order to secure the advantage of better stabilization in the industry and a larger though more deferred profit by operating the field as a unit. Much can be done toward efficient development of an oil field controlled by a few operators who are willing to cooperate for that purpose, but the best result can be obtained only by pooling their interests in the field

Cemented tungsten carbide, a product of a branch of metallurgy which has never possessed more than a relatively minor interest and importance, has recently commanded the attention of engineers, industrialists, financiers and men of business. New methods, new opportunities, new goals, never before considered, have suddenly been brought within the scope of practical realization. It is these results that attract the interest of the world, but we, as engineers and metallurgists, will have equal interest in the product itself and in that branch of metallurgy from which it comes. It seems appropriate, therefore, to speak today on Hard Metal Carbides and Cemented Tungsten Carbide, as the latter represents one of the outstanding developments of recent date in non-ferrous metallurgy. We are interested in the hard metal carbides as a group of related metallic substances and in cemented tungsten carbide as the leading representative of the metallurgy of this group. The literature of this general field is limited, and, bearing this in mind, it seems advisable to attempt to cover the field broadly and to correlate the subject matter, rather than to present a detailed account of any one of its phases. Our annual lecture lends itself admirably to this plan. The quickened interest in cemented tungsten carbide, once its potentialities were recognized, the many sides to the problem of developing the manufacture and use of this new product, and the desire to economize as much as possible in the time of development, have brought many into this work, both in this country and abroad, notably the Osram Lamp Co. and Friedrich Krupp in Germany and the General Electric Co. in this country. It would be presuming too much to attempt to speak too broadly of the present state of the art and science of the hard metal carbides and my remarks arc guided largely by the work done in the General Electric Co., and by our associates in the Carboloy Co. Even here the activities of many in these two groups have centered around the utilization of cemented tungsten carbide, which is outside the scope of this talk. The oil industry is at the parting of the ways in relating fundamental engineering concepts to legal interpretations and field practices. The old concept, based on an erroneous analogy to wild game, that oil and gas are migratory substances and belong to him who reduces them to possession regardless of their point of origin in the reservoir, has come to be quite generally recognized as the basis of many of the serious ills and extravagances of the industry. The chain of consequences resulting from this erroneous conception has been traced elsewhere and need not be recounted here. The important problem at this stage in the development of the industry, when laws are being revised by legislative action and modified by court decisions; when added powers are being exercised by voluntary committees and official regulatory bodies; and when the need for control of output has forced itself to the forefront, is to see to it that new law and action are based on sound engineering concepts. Reservoir Energy Common Property Since the study of gas instituted by the Marland committee of the American Petroleum Institute in 1927, a great mass of information has accumulated concerning the function of gas in the development and production of oil. This wealth of data leads to the conclusion that every oil pool contains three resources: Oil, gas and reservoir energy. I take it that the central problem of this symposium is the ownership of these three resources and that "source" and "utilization" are involved because of their bearing on ownership through the demands of equity and conservation. In order to facilitate the discussion, permit me to state categorically, that: The oil and gas in a particular tract should belong to the owners of the mineral rights in that particular tract, but the reservoir energy should be common property of all owners of mineral rights in the pool I take it that apportionment of oil and gas among owners according to the relative amounts that exist in place in their respective tracts is

AT the Noralyn mine and mill of International Minerals & Chemical Corp. in Bartow, Fla., process instrumentation has been incorporated in three departments-mining, flotation, and preparation. Use of the dragline is the most difficult aspect of the mining operation to control automatically. At the Noralyn mine there are two draglines, a Bucyrus-Erie 1250-B with 29-yd bucket and 235-ft boom and a Bucyrus-Erie 1150-B with 21-yd bucket and 215-ft boom. These are equipped with a minimum number of instruments, but further instrumentation would increase the operator's efficiency.
