THERE is probably no other mineral industry of which the public has as much information and misinformation as it has of the coal industry. Unfortunately, however, the general public's knowledge of the coal industry, outside of the particular kind of coal it is accustomed to, by reason of use, is largely made up of information received from newspaper and popular magazine articles, in which the mine workers are depicted as overworked and mistreated men, and the coal operators as "coal barons." Those who have any specific knowledge of exact conditions in the coal industry know how unjust and un- fair such an opinion of the coal industry is, not only to the miner but to the operator as well. Many reporters and writers of magazine articles are misled by statements regarding the condition of the miners that are exaggerated and not founded on facts and, if an investigation of the conditions of the miner's work, his habitation and surroundings were fairly made, it would at least compel more truthful statements by those who write for public reading. That such an investigation would not reveal anything that was wrong, or anything to be censured or cured, no one, I think, would maintain, but I do think that any fair investigation of the facts would show that conditions in and around the newer and later-developed coal mines and communities would compare favorably with those of manufacturing districts, and that where the mines and com- munities are old and not very attractive places to work, or live in, they carry with them other considerations, compensating for these conditions, and cannot be remedied by reason of a lack of sufficient coal to warrant economically any costly changes.

A commercially available, portable X-ray spectrograph, lightweight and rugged for vehicle or field camp use, was used to determine Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Rb, Sr, and Zn in stream sediment geochemical samples. Investigations showed a relative standard deviation of 1-3%, detection limits of approximately 100 pg/g and significant matrix effects. Coefficients of correlation greater than 0.9 were obtained between portable X-ray and emission and atomic-absorption spectroscopy analyses. A geochemical map of a known mineralized area showed good agreement with maps prepared by other methods of analysis and sample media.

A tough Conservation Act has been in force in Pennsylvania since January, 1964. Known as the Bituminous Coal Open Pit Mining Conservation Act, it is now under study by other coal producing states, and seems likely to serve as the blueprint for similar legislation elsewhere. It provides for the conservation and improvement of areas of land affected by open pit mining to decrease soil erosion, prevent pollution of rivers and streams, prevent combustion of unmined coal and generally improve the use and enjoyment of such lands. The cost of backfilling may go to as much as 40[c] or more per recovered ton and is cutting deeply into already reduced profit margins brought on by rising labor and equipment costs, static coal prices and less accessible coal. As a result, operators will be forced to seek greater efficiency.

The deformation modes of rhenium have been identified as those typical of the hexagonal metals, titanium, zirconium, and beryllium whose c/a ratios, in common with rhenium, are less than ideal for close packing. Slip is observed on (1010), (1011), and (0001) planes and twinning on (1121), (1122), and (1012) planes. The very high rate of work hardening is believed to be associated with intersecting partial dislocations on two (1010) systems which can combine to form sessile barriers. If the stacking fault energy is low, as postulated by Seeger, these barriers should be strong and not easily bypassed by cross slipping. Such an explanation could also account for the very small temperature dependence of the yield stress which was observed. RHENIUM is interesting scientifically as a member of the group of high melting point hexagonal metals: titanium, beryllium, and zirconium with a c/a ratio less than that for ideal close packing. Unlike them, however, it work hardens at a very high rate. This rate is greater and continues to a much higher degree of deformation than for nickel, normally considered to have a high rate of work hardening. This paper presents experimental observations on the modes of deformation of rhenium and, by comparison with other hexagonal metals, some speculation on the cause of the high work hardening. MATERIALS Johnson, Matthey rhenium powder of both 99.9 pct and 99.5 pct purity, see Table I, was compacted at 10 tons per sq in., part sintered at 1350°C in vacuo, and finally arc melted in a "gettered" argon atmosphere arc furnace to produce small buttons. Little difference was observed in the as-cast hardness or working down behavior of the two purities suggesting that either silicon and potassium do not have a significant effect on the working properties of rhenium or they were lost during arc melting. SPECIMEN PREPARATION The cast structure was broken up by cold-rolling with inter-stage annealing at 1600o or 1800°C in a vacuum high-frequency furnace using a tungsten susceptor. Strip for tensile testing was taken from two thicknesses of material 0.011 and 0.064 in. The former with intermediate anneals at 1800°C had a grain size of 900 grains per sq mm, while the latter with inter-stage annealing at 1600°C had a grain size of 3600 grains per sq mm. A coarse grain size was obtained by secondary recrystallization in a half button cold-worked by 30 pct reduction. Annealing times of from half an hour to several hours at 2200° to 2600°C in a "gettered" argon atmosphere arc furnace1 resulted in grains of up to 2 mm diam.

Recent start-up of the Pinto Valley mine and mill is expected to add to domestic copper mine capacity by some 62,500 tpy. Owned and operated by Cities Service Co.'s Miami Operations, the complex lies approximately 5% miles west of Miami, Ariz. The estimated $100- million project, the largest single construction project ever undertaken by Cities Service, includes the Pinto Valley open pit mine, a 40,000-tpd concentrator, and a 10-mile slurry pipeline that will transport a 28% copper concentrate slurry to a new filter plant located in Miami. Concentrate will be treated nearby at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.'s new smelter complex. The current pit design contains reserves of approximately 350 million tons of ore averaging 0.44% Cu. Based on an initial production target of 40,000 tpd ore and 60,000 tpd waste, mine life is estimated at 24 years. The current stripping ratio is 1.5: 1, requiring the ultimate removal of more than 500 million tons of waste and leach-grade material.

AN incomplete statistical analysis performed wearily on the morning after Thursday, Feb. 12, indicates that the unavoidable items of conversation among steelmen were the current shortage of sleeping time and the "Normandie." No analysis is needed, however, to be certain that many thousands of valuable words were uttered, both in and out of technical sessions, concerning matters of deep interest to members of the Iron and Steel Division. The opening session consisted mostly of papers that have appeared, or will appear shortly, in Metals Technology. One, however, that was not finished in time to be printed in any form, but that aroused great interest, was by E. L. Ramsey and L. G. Graper (Wisconsin Steel Works). Its subject was the production of high-sulphur steel by treatment with sulphur dioxide derived from anhydrous sodium sulphite or bisulphite added to the ladle or to the mold. The sulphide distribution in the finished steel is such that increased machinability and longer tool life result. Both items are of obvious importance in these days of mighty production.

IT is the object of this paper to oppose unnecessary changes, and the introduction of new and confusing terms. From the earliest times of which we have any record on the subject, iron has been divided into general classes. Whether iron was first known in the form of wrought iron or of steel, is a matter of no importance; but at the time when cast iron first became a prominent article of commerce, wrought iron and steel were old products¬steel, at that time, being generally made from wrought iron by the process of cementation. As steel was then properly defined as iron containing more carbon than wrought iron, so cast iron was appropriately defined as iron containing more carbon than steel. Until the year 1776, when Huntsman first began the manufacture of a new kind of iron by melting wrought iron and steel in crucibles, the above definitions were all that could be desired. At first, probably, owing to imperfect appliances, only a highly carburized iron was melted in crucibles, and this led to its being called cast steel. If our ancestors had found a name for this material not involving the use of the word steel, we would have been saved the trouble of the present discussion. As the arts developed, new uses were found for steel, and the products of the crucible were varied, until at the present day it is quite common to find steel containing no more carbon than average wrought iron, and other steel containing nearly or quite as much carbon as some cast iron. All of these various products of the crucible have retained, or received, the name cast steel, usually abbreviated to the simple word steel, without causing any confusion among producers or consumers in regard to terms or their meaning. In 1855, twenty-one years ago, the Bessemer process was introduced ; this was followed in a few years by the Siemens-Martin process, and the products of both were at once, and have ever since been, called steel, from the fact that they were identical in chemical and physical properties with crucible cast steel. At the present time, then, we have three subdivisions of cast steel, viz.: Crucible cast steel, Bessemer cast steel, and Siemens-Martin,

It is shown that Ni3Al precipitates homogeneously from nickel-rich alwminum alloys as plates on the (100) planes. Prior to actual precipitation a process occurs which is believed to be one of increasing short-range order. After precipitating the Ni3Al plates enlarge through competitive growth. Discontinuous precipitation can occur simultaneously with the above processes. Recent ideas of the origin of precipitation strengthening appear adequate to explain the hardness changes. REMARKABLY little appears to be known about the precipitation process in Ni-Al alloys in spite of their technical importance. This investigation originated to supply additional information about precipitation in general, this system in particular. Information on the structures and kinetics have been obtained through the use of hardness, X-rays, microscopy, calorimetry, and resistivity on high-purity alloys. PROCEDURES Six alloys, Table I, were prepared by melting carbonyl nickel and high-purity aluminum in alumina crucibles in vacuum and casting into 1-in. graphite molds. All rods were homogenized at least once at 1300°C for 24 hr prior to swaging and this was repeated on the first three alloys after 75 pct reduction. Alloy 4 could be reduced only 10 pct at 1000°C (probably in two-phase field) prior to fracture but 1/4-in. samples quenched from 1100°C were readily reduced cold. Alloy 5 was reduced 15 pct cold but failed on the next pass while alloy 6 of essentially the same aluminum content failed inter-granularly without apparent flow up to 1000°C. The alloys were heated in hydrogen at the elevated temperatures and formed thin, coherent aluminum oxide coatings which provided excellent oxidation resistance at lower temperatures. However, freshly prepared surfaces showed considerably less resistance at 500"to 700°C in air and apparently resulted in internal oxidation. As a consequence, low-temperature agings were carried out in evacuated tubes. RESULTS The isothermal hardening behavior of these alloys at 500"and 565C is given in Figs. 1 and 2. These results were obtained from samples cold worked 75 pct, recrystallized at 1000°C (1100°C for the 7.8 pct Al) and quenched in water. This recrystallization was used to give smaller grain sizes so as to obtain more uniform hardness values and the points represent an average of five readings. The electrical resistivity was measured on 1/16-in. wires quenched from 1000°C during aging at 495°C to give Fig. 3. The energy release and its rate are given in Fig. 4 for the 6.9 pct Al alloy during aging around 500°C. Inasmuch as this was a single run, its accuracy is not known but certainly the general shape and magnitudes are correct. The method used to obtain these results is described elsewhere.' Data for the aging at 600°, 700°, and 800°C of these alloys cold worked 50 pct are given in Fig. 5. Supplementary information from microscopy and X-ray diffraction have been included to indicate recrystallization, discontinuous precipitation and the appearance of superlattice lines from the Ni3Al. The hardness of these alloys as annealed, aged, cold worked, and cold worked and aged is given vs composition in Fig. 6. Those samples which were isothermally aged, Figs. 1 and 2, were reaged at 532°C and at successively higher temperatures for the indicated times to give the data of Fig. 7. These results as well as certain others, support the idea that the level of hardness reached for temperatures above 600°C are equilibrium values more or less independent of path. This being the case, the breaks in the curves would be the complete solution of the Ni,Al. The electrical resistivity versus temperatures for some of these alloys, both aged and unaged, is given in Fig. 8 along with those data from heating slowly (10 deg per day) to high temperatures. Interesting points include the lowering of the Curie temperature (the change in slope), the lack of any indications of a solubility limit and the large temperature coefficient for the Ni3Al. A slight break for Ni3Al around 100C shows up but this is not a Curie temperature as Ni3Al is not ferromagnetic down to -190°C. In a former paper* attention was directed to the various forms of pumping machines employed for permanent work in mining and metallurgical processes. The following is simply a collection of memoranda of work done of a temporary character, and is presented by way of comparison with other work of similar nature. In close proximity to the charcoal fnrnace at Pine Grove, Cumberland County, Pa., is a large deposit of superior hematite iron ore, which has been worked for a number of years, and from which many thousand tons of ore have been taken by open pit workings. In July, 1874, the furnace was blown out and operations at the bank suspended, the machinery for draining being removed except a plunger pump, 18 inches in diameter and 66 inches stroke, operated by a steam-engine by means of rods. The pit was allowed to fill with water, and no steps towards its reclamation were taken until November, 1877. At that time the pit was a pond of water at the base of the mountain, having an area of about four acres and a depth of seventy feet. As the pumps, rods, etc., had been submerged for over three years, and partially buried by the mud washed down from the banks, and as it was determined to change the location of the pump for future operations and drive it by water-power, a temporary pumping apparatus was determined upon for reclaiming the pit and keeping it drained until the permanent arrangements could be completed. By opening an old adit about 10 feet of the water was removed, and the area decreased to three acres. The inflow of springs was found to be 250 gallons per minute, and the amount of water contained in the pit was computed to be 45,000,000 gallons. As the inflow would undoubtedly increase while the water sank in the pit, provision was made for removing at least 60,000,000 gallons, at the rate of 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 gallons per day. The company determined to employ a Heald and Cisco centrifugal pump driven by an oscillatinig engine by means of a belt. Steam was supplied by four plain cylinder boilers, each 36 inches diameter

A potentiometric model technique is presented for determining the areal sweep efficiency of a five-spot well pattern, at and beyond breakthrough. A sharp interface between displaced and displacing fluids is assumed. Although the prototype svstem is referred to as a waterflood operation, obvious changes in the notation and computations will adapt the results to other displacement processes. The results of the study include the following. 1. Areal sweep efficiencies for a five-spot well pattern, at and beyond breakthrough, for mobility ratios (displacing to displaced fluid) of 4:1, 2:1, 1:1 and 1:4. 2. Extension of potentiometric analysis to the investigation of the areal sweep efficiency beyond breakthrough in a five-spot pattern by the application of conformal mapping and conductive-solid models. 3. The use of layers of conductive fabric in representing mobility ratio changes in potentiometric models. 4. The development of a probe mechanism for probing conductive solids. The results obtained by conductive-cloth models agree with earlier areal sweep efficiencies at breakthrough obtained by Aronofsky and Ramey 1 on the potentiometric analyzer using electrolytic-tank models. Results beyond breakthrough differ from those obtained by the X-Ray Shadowgraph technique. Data from this study show that, for mobility ratios greater than one, water cut rises rapidly as fluid is produced after breakthrough. However, for mobility ratios smaller than one, a large increase in area swept resulted with only a small increase in water cut. INTRODUCTION In calculating reservoir performance of waterflood-ing operations and other fluid-injection programs, it is necesssary to estimate the areal sweep efficiency * before and after injected-fluid breakthrough into production wells. Influence of mobility ratio on oil-production history, before and after breakthrough for a five-spot well pattern, has been studied by X-Ray Shadowgraph techniques 2-5 and by gelatin models.6 In none of these investigations was the transition zone controlled experimentally. Steady-state anaiog techniques assume that a vertical and discrete interface exists between the displacing and displaced phase. Thus, when using a potentiometric analysis, it is assumed that no transition zone exists. To determine the areal sweep efficiency beyond breakthrough for a five-spot well pattern using the potentiometric analyzer, four principal problems had to be resolved. These were the following. 1. The laborious method of representing changes in mobility ratio in electrolytic tanks by means of contoured wooden blocks. 2. Vapcrization of the electrolyte solution during the study causing concentration changes and, thereby, variable conductivity. 3. The scale-limitation problem 7 that is accentuated by abrupt eiectrolyte depth changes. 4. A wellbore geometry problem. EXPERIhlENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES CONDUCTIVE-SOLID MODEL The theory, equipment and procedural techniques of the electrolytic-tank potentiometric model have been treaced excellently by Lee8 and by Muskat.9 By the use of a conductive solid to represent the fluid conductivity of the porous media, the need for contouring wooden blocks to represent mobility ratio was eliminated. It was found that a carbon-black coated fabric, Uskon D-16,** could be employed as a fairly uniform conductive media. The revolution in equipment for blasthole drilling, ore loading, and ore hauling has been so rapid over the last ten years that it has generated an important new profit potential in the mining industry. With the new high-capacity machinery now available, it is possible for a mining enterprise to earn a profit from larger and lower grade orebodies than ever before despite the ever-increasing burden of rising costs. Just what such equipment can accomplish when coupled with improved mining practice has been demonstrated with startling success at the No. 1 mine of Minerva Oil Co. near Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County, Ill. The No. 1 is an underground operation which has been producing fluorspar and zinc ores and concentrates continuously since 1944. A few years ago, when the mine neared the familiar cross-roads where rising costs, increasing tonnages, and relatively static product prices converge, company officials decided to bolster the operation with new mobile equipment. They chose three machines which proved so effective that output at the No. 1 doubled between 1963 and 1965,while costs dropped by about 40% in the same period.

Mineral exploration activities are benefiting from new interpretive techniques which have become economically practical with computers. Government agencies, educational institutions, and industry have each contributed research and development efforts for improving the mathematical analysis and graphical display of exploration data, resulting in operational aids not foreseeable a decade ago. Progress has been worldwide and is expanding rapidly. Books 1-10 are supplementing the periodic literature, at least one abstracting service is now active, 11 and an association has recently been formed to encourage and publicize advances in this field. 12 With the diversity of applications, only partial coverage of the subject can be made at any single symposium. Four of the six papers in this section report on the current state-of-the-art in selected areas of interest: graphics, time-sharing, mathematics, and economic analysis. The remaining two papers are descriptions of advanced statistical techniques for gaining additional information during exploration, and illustrate methods which will become more commonly applied in the future. "Computer Graphics: A New Tool for Exploration and Mining" describes the use of a computer and accessory equipment as an information retrieval device, graphically merging and displaying pertinent information for visual inspection and interpretation. This is a rapid means of studying information which has been pre-stored in a form accessible to the computer. Time-sharing is a means of achieving a comparable rapid response when calculations are being performed. The paper, "Some Applications of Time-Sharing in Mining Geophysics," describes the experience of one company using a time-sharing facility for geophysical computations. Another paper on this subject, stressing mining applications, has recently been published. 13

A formation tester run on logging cable is now available to the oil industry. It offers a method of safely and rapidly testing possible producing formations in uncased holes. These tests can be made up the hole after running the electric log. Reservoir pressure data is continuously recorded at the surface as the fluid sample is extracted. The tester may be assembled with a reservoir of 1-, 2.75-, or 5.5-gal capacity. A retaining pad on the body of the tool is expanded against the wall of the hole at the exact depth desired; this depth is determined by electrical log control. Two bullets are then fired through the center of the retaining pad which create a connection between the formation and a flow line to the sample chamber. When the chamber is filled, a valve is closed and the fluid sample sealed at maximum pressure. The tool is retracted to minimum diameter and brought out of the hole. Electrical circuits permit a complete recording at the surface of the mechanical operations of the tool as well as the formation pressure build-up and the hydrostatic mud pressure. The tool was introduced commercially during the latter part of 1955 in the Gulf Coasts of Louisiana and Texas. Over 1,000 operations have been made to date (Sept. 1, 1956); 50 per cent of which resulted in successful tests. Failures have been due mostly to ineffective sealing in unconsolidated sands. One major company had 41 successful tests out of 80 attempts with 23 ineffective pad seals. Results for this company were very gratifying as to pinpointing gas-oil ratios, indicating productive permeabilities and aiding in determination of fluid content where electrical log and side-wall coring information were inconclusive. Eight typical pressure curves are discussed (including misruns). Six types of fluid recoveries are interpreted. Eight actual field examples of electric logs, showing the problems solved by the formation tester, are illustrated. The present applications of the tool are discussed: 1. Determination of productive fluid—varticularlv differentiating between gas and oil. 2. Determination of reservoir pressure as an aid to: (a) safety in completion technique, (b) reduction in drilling costs, and (c) reservoir analysis. 3. Determination of minimum gas-oil ratios. 4. Location of gas-oil or oil-water contacts. 5. Recovery of samples for examination and analysis: oil (gravity); gas (hydrocarbon content); water (salinity). Additional applications envisioned for the future are also given: (I) subsurface exploration based on accurate pressure, (2) recovery of fluid samples from the undisturbed reservoir for PVT work, and (3) possible quantitative study of permeabilities or productivity index. Running the formation tester requires no special pre-cautionary measures. Because full hydrostatic mud pressure is maintained at all times, well depth is no problem. Thus, the method allows safe, economical testing in wells which heretofore could only be tested by setting casing. INTRODUCTION A new method of safely and rapidly testing possible producing formations in uncased holes is achieving considerable success. The method offers promise of further advances in reservoir study. Called the formation tester, the new instrument is unique in that it operates on logging cable. It thus offers all the advantages of wire-line operations and becomes an important adjunct to present logging and side-wall coring services. The tester is operated against the wall of the hole at any depth desired. Zones to be tested are usually determined by a study of the electrical and the micro-caliper surveys. Reservoir data, as well as the operating cycle of the tool in the hole, are continuously recorded at the surface during the operation. The tester, as it was originally designed, was capable of recovering a 1-gal sample of reservoir fluid per trip in the hole. Tools with reservoirs of 2.75- and 5.5-gal capacity are now available. The 5.5-gal reservoir is equipped with a segregating system, set before going in the hole, so that the last portion of the recovery (usually 1 gal) is automatically separated from the first portion. The greatest decrease was at Rodessa, with small normal declines in production of the old settled fields. Natural gas production from gas wells declined 15.9 per cent from 1937, but casinghead gas increased, so the decline in total production was only 6.9 per cent. Decline in completions was due to lack of proven areas for drilling, as well as price and marketing difficulties; and wildcat activity mas also less than in 1937. The increase in number of dry holes was due chiefly to shallow drilling in the old Caddo and Zwolle fields. Most important events in 1938 were the discovery of the Shreveport deep oil and gas field, extension of the Logansport gas-distillate field into Louisiana, development of oil production in the Bodeaw zone on the flanks of Cotton Valley, opening of deep gas-distillate production at Shongaloo, and completion of one well in a deeper horizon at Bluc Lake (Zwolle field). Geological Notes The deep drilling done in 1938 did not cause any important changes in geological correlation and nomenclature of the formations below the Upper or Gulf Cretaceous. The stratigraphic section of the Lower Cretaceous and deeper beds, with names used in the accompanying tables, as approved a year ago by the Shreveport Geological Society, is as follows:

Die castings may be defined as metal castings made by forcing molten metal, under pressure, into a metallic mold or die. It is necessary to keep this definition in mind to avoid confusing this process with other permanent-mold casting processes. The fundamental principles of the process have been known and practised many years. The simplest application is embodied in the modern linotype machine in which molten metal (usually tin-lead alloy) is forced under pressure into a metallic mold. The pressure is derived from a piston and cylinder immersed in the molten metal. Progress in the art of die casting may conveniently be divided into three groups: Machine for imparting pressure to the metal, material for the die or mold, casting alloys. The problem of delivering molten metal under pressure into a die is comparatively simple, when dealing with low-fusing-point alloys, as the alloys of lead and tin, but it is much more complicated when dealing with metals of higher fusing points, such as the alloys of zinc, aluminum, and copper. Although the art of die casting is comparatively new and, to a large extent, unknown, the records of the patent office are replete with patents on the subject. Fig. 1 shows the Underwood machine patented in 1902; this is probably one of the first machines designed for the production of commercial die castings. The relation of this machine to the linotype casting machine is clearly apparent. A cylinder and piston are immersed in the molten metal, the application of power to this piston forcing the molten metal, under pressure, into the mold or die. The Doehler machine, Fig. 2, patented in 1907, is based on the same general principles. This machine is used to a large extent at the present time, throughout the United States, for the production of zinc, tin, and lead alloy die castings. In the machine shown in Fig. 3, patented by Doehler in 1910, compressed air is used for forcing the metal into the die. In Fig. 4 is shown another of this type of machine. Here compressed air is applied to the surface of the molten metal to force it into the die. In a machine patented by Chandler in 1914, shown in Fig. 5, the

ALTHOUGH the corrosion resistance of magnesium and its alloys is closely related to iron content, there has been no direct measurement of the solid solubility of iron in magnesium. Bulian and Fahrenhors;1 and Mitchel]2 agree that pure iron or a limited terminal solid solution crystallizes from the Mg-rich liquid. For this reason a magnetic-moment method was selected to estimate that portion of the total iron content which is not in solid solution. Since iron in solid solution in magnesium cannot contribute to ferromagnetism, the difference between chemical and magnetic-iron analyses should yield the solid solubility. By experimentation it was found that the melting of pure sublimed magnesium (99.995 wt pet purity) in Armco-iron crucibles at about 800°C is a convenient way to introduce small amounts of iron. Melts retained 5, 10 and 20 min at 800°C analyzed 0.003,, 0.005,, and 0.018 & 0.001 weight pet Fe, respectively, after being stirred, heated to 850°C, and cast into graphite molds. The as-cast alloys were pickled in acid (dilute HC1 + HNO3), annealed at 600°C for 3 days, scalped on a lathe to remove the pitted surface, pickled again, extruded at about 100°C to 3-mm wire, reannealed 41/2 days at 500°C, and water-quenched. The specimens were again scalped, pickled, and used both for chemical and for magnetic analysis. Most of the precautions described were intended to prevent iron pickup by contact with tools or superficial iron enrichment by volatilization of magnesium during heat-treatment. It is believed that the specimens ultimately used for test were homogeneous and characteristic of phase equilibria at 500°C. Magnetic Analyses A susceptibility apparatus of the Curie type was used for magnetic analyses. Field strengths of up to 10,400 oersteds could be generated. By this method, an analytical balance measures the force of attraction which a calibrated magnetic field exerts on a suspended specimen. The force equation is as follows f/m = M dh/dy where f/m = force per unit mass of sample M = magnetic moment per unit mass dH/dy = magnetic field gradient The dH/dy characteristic of the instrument is determined by the use of a standard palladium sample, and the calibration is made independently for all values of H. Since a large finite field is required to saturate an assembly of ferromagnets, it is necessary to measure the apparent magnetic moment for increasing steps of H until a saturation value is obtained. The percentage of iron in the sample as free ferromagnetic iron may then be computed simply C= 100 (M1/M1) where C = percent content of undissolved iron in sample M1 = saturation magnetic moment of sample per unit mass M1 = saturation magnetic moment of iron per unit mass taken as 217 emu-cm per gm There is no serious difficulty in applying this method except for the unusual magnetic behavior of very fine particles of ferromagnetic substances. It has been found and is the basis for a widely accepted theory that with sufficient subdivision, the magnetic fields required to saturate and the coercive force after saturation rise to exceedingly high values. Recent work on precipitates of Fe and Co from copper solid solutions8 showed that about 5000 oersteds were necessary to approach saturation. The magnetic moments as a function of field strength measured in the present investigation are listed in Table I. Only the 0.018 wt pet Fe alloy yielded a magnetization curve with a fairly well-defined saturation plateau at 3.76x10 -2 emu-cm/ gm. This corresponds to 0.017 & 0.001 wt pet Fe in the alloy. This indicates that the solid solubility must be of the order of 0.001 wt pet Fe. The magnetic-moment data of the other two alloys are badly scattered, indicating that the amount of ferromagnetic iron in these samples is so low that the magnetic forces acting on them cannot be measured accurately by the analytical balance used. Nevertheless, the fact that even the 0.003, wt pet Fe alloy shows ferromagnetism indicates that the solid solubility must be below that value.
