IT is now well known that troublesome intercrystalline corrosion may occur in austenitic stainless steels following exposure of the metal to a temperature within the range 1000° to 1500° F. (540° to 815° C.). The present paper describes a satisfactory method of estimating the extent of such corrosion, based on the measurement of the electrical resistance of a specimen before and after attack. This new method enabled us to study quantitatively the effect of several factors upon intergranular corrosion in the 18 Cr, 8 Ni type of alloy. The results show that susceptibility to this attack increases with increasing carbon content and grain size and appears to pass through a maximum for certain combinations of temperature of sensitization and period during which the alloy was maintained at that temperature; and are in complete accord with our interpretation of the mechanism of this phenomenon. The method is probably applicable to other metals or alloys subject to intercrystalline attack, such as the aluminum alloys of the duralumin type. The methods hitherto in use for estimating the degree of intergranular attack fall into three types: (1) microscopic examination,1 (2) macroscopic examination of fractures, and (3) determination of the time required for complete failure or disintegration .2 None of these lends itself very well to a measurement of the extent of corrosion. The first two are qualitative in nature and the third provides an arbitrary value largely dependent on individual judgment, since failure is a progressive phenomenon and not a sudden event. Our experience is that weight-loss determinations, although valuable in some types of corrosion investigations, bear no simple relation to intercrystalline corrosion in this type of alloy, as is to be expected since the phenomenon probably involves only the thinnest films between adjacent metallic grains.

The volume of air needed to move the combustion wave through each acre-foot of the reservoir is a very important quantity for engineering economic analyses. A new method, which involves backflowing the injection well, has been developed for determining the air requirement .for the forward combustion thermal pilot in the Delaware-Childers field. The method depends on measurement of the total volume of air injected and measurement of the pore volume in the zone swept out by the combustion front. The basic premise of the method is that the pore volume of the swept zone contains air, while the formation around this zone contains flue gas, oil and water. The pore volume of the swept zone is determined by blowing down the pilot section of the formation through the injection well after the pilot is shut down. Oxygen balance is used to differentiate between air from the swept zone and flue gas from the surrounding formation. Data indicate that air'is produced from the swept zone by relatively efficient miscible displacement by the flue gas. The pore volume occupied by the air in the swept zone is determined by simple PVT relationships. The average temperature of the swept zone is calculated by heat balance from the total amount of heat generated during the pilot and losses to the surrounding formation. The new method was applied successfully at the conclusion of the pilot in the Delaware-Childers field; the air required for the reservoir conditions involved was calculated to be 19.2 MMscf/acre-ft of reservoir swept. INTRODUCTION One of the most important pieces of information to be found from a forward combustion pilot is the air requirement; that is, the volume of air needed to move the combustion wave through each acre-foot of the reservoir. Compression costs per barrel of oil recovered, which are a direct function of the air requirement, are a large portion of the expenses incurred in the thermal recovery process. Thus, the profitability of thermal recovery depends largely on the air requirement, which is a measure of the amount of fuel deposited and burned in the thermal recovery process. Several attempts have been made to correlate crude oil properties with fuel deposition and, hence, air requirement.l*2 Other attempts have been made by our laboratory to find the air requirement by material balance, gravity survey, pressure transient analysis,3 magnetic survey and the poten-tiometric model. Better methods are needed to predict more accurately the economics of fieldwide application of the process. Another method of finding the air requirement consists of operating a pilot thermal project for several years. This is followed by an extensive coring program to define the volume swept by the combustion wave. The air requirement is found from the total injected air divided by the volume of the swept region found from the coring operation. This method is costly; an adequate coring program usually costs several hundred thousand dollars. A thermal pilot was operated in a watered-out portion of the Delaware-Childers field, Bartlesville sand, from Nov., 1960, until May 3, 1965. One of the primary purposes of this pilot operation was to determine the air requirement for economic calculations which determine the advisability of expanding the project to the entire 128,000 acre-ft field. Barnes4 has described the result of this pilot operation,, including calculation of the air requirement from limited coring data. The value obtained, as calculated, was 15.8 MMscf/acre-ft. One purpose of this report is to describe a new method of finding the air requirement from a thermal pilot operation. A second purpose is to describe the application of this method to the Delaware-Childers thermal pilot. NOT only is your toastmaster silver-tongued in his references 'to myself, but he is also quite in the habit of "saying it in silver." I have analyzed with some care his statistics of the world's silver production, which have been distributed here along with the menu, although frankly from the point of view of most of us, the distribution rather than the production of silver is of immediate concern. Unlike the performers by whom we have been entertained between courses, the rest of us on the program will have to do without costume or musical accompaniment, which as my friend Rains can testify puts an artist under severe strain. I am entitled by right of office and of precedent to receive your attention for ten minutes. The Governor, who appears on the program as a speaker; however, has asked me for five minutes of my time, and Senator Thomas has insinuated that he would appreciate one-half of the remainder, wherefore, I must ask your close attention to the very brief remarks that I am able to make under such restricted circumstances. To begin with, I want you to believe that I am approaching the task set by your toastmaster with misgivings. In looking over the Institute records relating to the Salt Lake City meeting of 1914 for some precedent as to what I ought to say, I found but one reference-and that of the following indefinite char¬acter-" and Friday night there was a hilarious banquet to 350 members and guests."

The hardenability of titanium-base alloys was studied by metallographic examination and hardness survey of Jominy specimens end-quenched from the B range. Analyses of the data led to the equation log J = -0.57 + 0.25 @ct Fe + pct Mn + pct Mo) + 0.19 @ct Cr) +0.16 @ct V) + 0.03 @ct Zr). Here J is the distance, in sixteenths of an inch, from the quenched end of a Jominy hardenability specimen in the position of peak hardness, for material quenched from the B range. This equation fitted the experimental data with a standard deviation of approximately 0.29. The effects of the elements Al, Sn, W, Cu, Ni, B, C, N, 0, and H, and of pain size, were not statistically significant or not practically significant. A check against hardenability measurements in the literature showed agreement within the stated standard deviation. The equation should be useful in estimating hardenability of new or modified titanium alloys. HARDENABILITY in a titanium-base alloy is the ability of the alloy to retain the B structure on quenching. An alloy with high hardenability will retain the /3 structure even when cooled relatively slowly from a temperature at which B or P plus a is stable. A low hardenability material will retain P only if quenched extremely rapidly from the range of p or 0-plus-a stability, or will not retain it at all, at room temperature. High hardenability is desirable in titanium alloys to be heat-treated to high-strength levels. Its value is by no means limited to large section sizes. With high hardenability, a material can be solution-treated and cooled at a variety of rates, either to give high strength directly or, more generally, to give a soft ductile condition from which high strength can be obtained by subsequent aging. With low hardenability, high strength can be obtained, if at all, only by very rapid quenching, and there will generally be little increase in hardness on subsequent aging; an alloy of this type is limited in its applicability. On the other hand, alloys of very low hardenability have some advantages in weldability; essentially, they are always in the annealed condition, after welding as well as before. For commercial alloys, hardenability data are usually available, in the form either of property data after cooling from the solution temperature at various rates, with or without subsequent aging, or of results of a standard hardenability test, such as that originally developed for steels by Jominy and Boegehold.' When modifications of an available alloy are considered, or preparation of new alloy compositions, it would be Very convenient to be able to estimate the hardenability of the new material without having to make and test it. A method of estimating hardenability of titanium alloys from their composition was suggested by one of the authors some time ago, on a preliminary basis, utilizing scattered data found in the literature.' It seemed worthwhile to carry out a systematic experimental study of the effect of composition upon hardenability. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Approximately fifty heats of various compositions, weighing 8 to 10 Ib apiece, were melted in a small inert-gas tungsten-arc furnace with water-cooled copper walls. The starting material was 110 Brine11 titanium sponge, with high-purity metals added for alloying. Each heat was bottom-poured under vacuum through a molybdenum burnout strip into a cold graphite mold, to form an ingot approximately 4-1/2 by 3-1/2 by 3 in.* From each ingot were cut *The material was melted and cast by Pitman-Dunn Laboratory, Frankford Arsenal, to whom the authors must express their thanks. two pieces 4-1/2 by 1-1/2 by 1-1/2 in. These were forged, at temperatures adjusted to the composition, into 1-1/4-in. rounds, from which standard 1-in.-diam hardenability specimens3 were machined. A number of small samples were also prepared from forged materials of each heat, annealed, quenched from various temperatures, and examined metallographically. The P-transus temperature was determined by observation of the degree of resolution of primary a in these pieces. samples for chemical analyses were also taken from the forgings. One hardenability specimen of each heat was solution-treated for 1 hr approximately 50°F above the measured transus temperature, and the other for 1 hr approximately 250°F above the transus. (An additional hour was allowed for the specimens to reach furnace temperature.) These are not necessarily the temperatures that would be selected for

Danville, the county seat of Montour county, Pa., was one of the earliest and best-known centers of the iron intlustry in the State. It is situated on the north bank of the north branch of the Sosquehanna river, twelve miles east of the confluence of the north and west branches of that river at Northurnberlttnd. The ore-belt, extending for a distance of twelve miles along the north bank, has been developed in a number of places, but nowhere so extensively as in the immediate vicinity of Danville. Hence, a description of the mines in that locality will suffice, as typical of the workings of the entire section. Geology. The Montour ridge consists of an anticlinal fold extending from the source of Wapwollopen creek on the east to the west branch of the Susquehanna, which it reaches at the mouth of Chilisquaque creek. According to the reports of the First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, the length of the ridge is nearly twenty-seven miles, with an average breadth of three-fourths of a mile, and a maximum elevation of six hundred feet in the vicinity of Danville, where it also attains its greatest width. Just north of Danville the Mahoning creek cuts through it, exposing the iron-ore on the hill-side, where advantage has been taken of this to work the beds on the southern slope of the ridge by means of drifts. The sections given in Fig. 1 are taken from the reports of the First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, made in 1858, by H. D Rogers, whose description of the Moatour ridge was so complete and accurate that the entire report was reprinted as an appendix to Vol. G 7 of the Second Geological Survey. Bethlehem, Pa.-In discussing the question personally with Mr. Matteson I have found that he simply proposed this as a suggestion and he recognizes, as well as a great many other oil geologists and oil operators, that to put into practice such a suggestion would mean the overcoming of many difficulties. Yet perhaps it may be possible to overcome the various objections that may be offered. Undoubtedly one of the most serious objections is that of incomplete and inaccurate well records. Faulty records are worse than no records at all. Perhaps, however, definite instructions and insistence on their observation may remedy this defect after a time. THE CHAIRMAN (M. L. REQUA, San Francisco, Cal.).-This subject is a. very important one, but just how far the National Government can go in .taking action is a question: It involves, of course, the question of State rights. California, I .think, has done very well up to date and probably will do better in the future. The law that was passed at the session of the Legislature 2 years ago is working as satisfactorily as anything of that kind can work with so little experience to guide the framers of the statute. We recognize in California the vital necessity of conserving the oil of the State. We have come to the conclusion that there is not as much oil ,in California as we thought there was. In the month of December the State drew on its oil stocks to- the extent of 1,800,000 bbl. and I think that the January statistics will show probably as much more. There is more or less of a.: panic at the present time among the large marketing concerns regarding the question as to where they are going to get their oil for future requirements

The Evergreen mine, located at Apex, in the northern part of Gilpin county, Colorado, has opened a very peculiar and interesting copper-deposit, in which both bornite and chalcopyrite occur as rock-minerals. The country-rocks are crystalline schists cut by dikes of granu-lite and of pegmatite. At the Evergreen property they have been cut by a dike of a uew kind of eruptive rock, to which I have given the name " Evergreenite." The rock is composed of quartz, alkali feldspars, orthoclase and albite (often interlocked as microperthite), with augite of the ægirine variety and long needles of enstatite and diallage. For reasons stated below, I believe the dike to be of Tertiary age. It is easily traced on the surface of the ground, from a point in the bottom of Pine creek, about a mile below Apex, to the top of Nevada hill, 1,500 ft. beyond and 600 ft. above it. (See Fig. 1.) It varies from 3 to 12 ft. in width, and is bounded on both sides by contact-zones about 60 ft. wide, in which the crystalline schists have been changed into pseudo-quartzites or pseudo-gneisees, according to the injection of an excess of quartz or of feldspars through the special layer of the schists. The most interesting feature is the presence of the pyroxenes, which are always found, though in very variable proportions from place to place, in the layers of these metamorphosed crystalline schists. The dike has torn from its walls a large number of fragments of the wall-rock. It must have been in a viscous state when that happened, because these fragments of the wall-rock do not show any sign of resorption or of assimilation by the magma. In places they are so distinct and so numerous that the rock looks to the naked eye like a pseudo-breccia, of which, never-

Pebble milling has been practiced in the reduction works of South Africa gold mines for well over 50 years. Originally flint pebbles were imported from Denmark to grind stamp-mill amalgamation-process tailing, which contained a good deal of extractable gold, but local operators soon found that large pieces of ore could be used for the same purpose. The ore is a hard, tough conglomerate in which quartz pebbles are cemented together by a matrix of redeposited silica interspersed with pyrite crystals. The gold, rarely visible, occurs as fine particles mostly segregated at the interface of the pebble and matrix, although a small fraction occurs within the pyrite crystals. There is seldom any gold in the pebbles themselves. Following the usual South African practice in pebble milling, Union Corp. grinds the ore wet in two or three milling stages incorporating classification. The sized broken ore used as grinding media is separated from the main ore stream in the crushing section that prepares the ore for milling. Where the ore channel, or reef, is narrow there is a shortage of large pebbles. In this case primary grinding may be done in ball mills or, more recently, in rod mills, which cost less per ton to operate. The trend, however, is to prepare finer feed for the milling section. This makes it possible to use smaller primary pebbles and eliminates the need for steel. REDUCTION WORKS OF UNION CORP. LTD. Union Corp. Ltd. exercises financial and technical control over a group of seven gold mines in the Transvaal and Orange Free State. In the Transvaal, with one exception. the mines lie 20 to 40 miles east of Johannesburg, in flat or gently rolling countryside. Winkelhaak, the first of several new mines that will be developed by Union Corp., is located in similar terrain in an entirely new gold mining district about 80 miles east of Johannesburg. Table I gives details of milling units for six of the Union Corp. mines, together with the tonnage milled in 1957. Winkelhaak Mines Ltd. is not included, as it did not begin milling until 1958. This reduction plant has no crushing section; ore is ground directly from the mine (autogenously) in 12x16-ft mills. Because these operations are still in development, they are not described in this article. It will be noted that certain reduction works have mills of more than one size in the same milling stage. This came about when plant extensions in- corporated larger units. In the case of Geduld Propty. Mines Ltd., which began milling operations 50 years ago, the primary stage is stamp milling. The reduction works follow a uniform pattern and are usually joined to the main ore shaft. Ore from other shafts is brought by standard-gage railway and dumped into a common transfer bin. The trend is to increase surface storage capacity to enable the crushing and milling sections to operate at a steady rate, independent of fluctuating ore deliveries from mine. Milling and cyanide extraction divisions of new mines are always designed to allow for extensions as mine production increases. The conveying, washing, and screening system of the crushing section is usually laid out in final form, with additional space for more crushing equipment. The crushing sections operate on one shift during early years of mine production; a second shift is introduced when the mining rate warrants it. Ample surge capacity is provided. Crushing and milling is done only on weekdays, as the law does not allow these operations to take place on Sunday in any plants constructed since 1911. The cyanide extraction sections, however, operate continuously seven days a week, drawing on mill pulp gradually built up in the thickeners during the week. Construction and equipment of milling plants follow standard practice. Dilution water is drawn from a large, high-level tank to obtain constant pressure, but gland service water for the pulp pumps is reticulated from high-pressure, two-stage pumps. The mills are equipped with the most up-to-date machinery and are designed to save labor. They compare favorably with milling plants in countries where native labor does not exist, and automatic controls are being installed wherever feasible. Hydrocyclone classifiers have replaced mechanical classifiers in modern milling plants, chiefly because of the saving in capital outlay, maintenance, and building space. The hydroclones are fed from steady head boxes rather than directly from pumps, and dilution water is introduced into these boxes. Tests have shown that in steadiness of operation and separating efficiency cyclones are comparable to mechanical classifiers. but protective stationarv screens are needed to keep the spigots clear. Rubber-lined pumps are used for pulp of about 3 mesh or finer and metal-lined pumps for coarser material. None of the Union Corp. milling plants practices gravity concentration of coarse gold by amalgamation or the use of corduroy blankets. Studies have proved that no economic case can be made for these methods, which complicate the milling process and demand extra precautions against theft.

In 1975, the US produced 10 900 tons (12,000 st) of U3O8 from ores whose grade ranged from a low of 0.160% to a high of 0.196% U3O8. By the early 1980's if the current mining projects described here are allowed to go on stream, Australia will be able to produce at least 10 900 tons of U3O8 annually from ores whose grade ranges from a low of 0.150%to a high of 2.300%. As pointed out in the previous article, this initial rate of production could have been reached now-giving an immense boost to the depressed Australian economy. So, let's have a close look at current mining projects.

The solubility limit of oxygen in columbium has been determined in the range between 775' and 1100°C by means of lattice parameter measurements and microscopic examination. The solubility is a function of temperature and varies, in the range given above, from 0.25 to 1.0 pct O, respectively. BECAUSE of the marked deleterious effect of oxygen upon the mechanical properties of some of the transition metals, it is desirable to know something about the solubility of oxygen in these metals. The brittleness caused by oxygen in solution is particularly marked in the case of the group VA elements, vanadium, columbium, and tantalum. The solubility of oxygen in vanadium has already been reported in an earlier paper,' and Wasilewski2 has given a value (0.9 wt pct) for the solid solubility of oxygen in tantalum at 1050°C. Brauer3 in 1941 investigated the Cb-0 system up to Cb2O5, but made no real effort to investigate the extent of oxygen solubility in the metal. He made the observation, however, that this solubility must be less than 4.76 atom pct (0.86 wt pct) oxygen. This estimate was made from X-ray diffraction results on the alloys CbO, CbO, and CbO; all alloys consisted of the terminal (Cb) solid solution plus CbO, but the last alloy containing 4.76 atom pct 0 showed only three very weak CbO lines. It is surprising that Brauer, by examining only three alloys, arrived at an estimate of the solubility which agrees very well with the results to be reported herein. Experimental Procedure A columbium strip obtained from Fansteel Metallurgical Products was cut into strips, 0.020x1/2x2 in. Two holes, about 3/16 in. in diameter, were made near the ends of the strips in order to hold them against a flat steel block for mounting in a General Electric X-ray spectrometer for lattice parameter measurements. The same holes were used to hang the specimens inside a fused silica vacuum furnace tube which was part of a Sieverts' gas absorption apparatus. The apparatus and method of adding oxygen gas has been previously described.1 According to the supplier, the columbium obtained had the analysis given in Table I. After degreasing the samples, approximately 0.001 in. was etched from each side of the samples in order to remove possible surface impurities from the last rolling operation. For this purpose the following cold acid pickle was found satisfactory: 8 parts HNO3, 2 parts H2O2 and 1 part HF. Various Cb-O compositions were obtained up to 0.75 wt pct O by the gas absorption and diffusion technique. After the sample had absorbed all the oxygen gas added at 1000°C, an additional 24 hr was allowed for homogenization. This treatment appeared to be adequate, as shown by the linearity of the lattice parameter-composition plot. More concentrated alloys were prepared by arc melting mixtures of Cb and Cb2O5 since it was very time-consuming to make Cb-0 alloys in the neighborhood of 1 pct O, or over, by the diffusion method. When the flat strip specimens were used, they were ready for the X-ray spectrometer after cooling from the Sieverts' apparatus. The cooling rate obtained by merely allowing the hot fused silica furnace tube to radiate to the atmosphere (when the furnace was lowered) was sufficiently fast to keep the dissolved oxygen in solution. Arc-melted alloys were reduced to —200 mesh powder in a diamond mortar, wrapped in tantalum foil, sealed off in evacuated fused silica tubes, and then heat treated as indicated in Table 11. The fused silica tubes were quickly immersed in cold water without breaking the tubes after the heat treatments. The tantalum foil prevented reaction between the fused silica and the sample; there was no reaction between the powdered samples and the foil at 1000°C, but some trouble was experienced at 1100°C. At this temperature level a reaction between the sample and the foil was sometimes observed, which resulted in erroneous parameter values. Experimental Results Hardness Tests: Since most of the X-ray samples were in the form of flat strip, it was convenient to obtain Vickers hardness numbers as a function of oxygen content. Compared to the V-O case,' oxygen hardens columbium much more slowly, presumably because of the larger octahedral volume in colum-bium (about 12.0 compared to 9.3Å3 in vanadium), hence, requiring less lattice strain for solution. The plot of VHN vs wt pct O is shown in Fig. 1.

An experimental determination has been made of the efject of surface diffusion on the vapor pressure obtained in a Kwudsen cell. The results show that a knife-edge orifice in a molybdenum lid may give erroneous results for the vapor pressure of silver. when a correction suggested by winterbottom and Hirth is made, the results become meaningful. Experimental work with cylindrical orifices in molyhdenz~m lids and knife-edge orifices in ceramic lids shows that good vapor-pressure results may he obtained when the orifice is designed so that ejfusion is the only significant source of weight loss. THE Knudsen effusion cell technique has been used by many investigators to study relative and absolute vapor pressures over metals and alloys at elevated temperatures. As a result of this interest, some theoretical studies have been made of geometric factors affecting effusion from the orifice of a Knudsen cell. A review of these studies has been made by Margrave.1 Recently, Winterbottom and Hirth2 have suggested that a physical effect, that of condensation, surface diffusion, and re-evaporation, may seriously affect Knudsen cell measurements, especially when a knife-edge orifice is used. Inasmuch as many of the present vapor-pressure data have been obtained using knife-edge orifices. it was felt that an experimental evaluation of the effect of surface diffusion on Knudsen cell measurements would be of value both in the design of the cell orifice and in establishing realistic estimates of the limits of error for existing data. The experimental program was in two sections. Firstly, measurements of the vapor pressure of silver were made in cells with cylindrical and conical orifices in which the surface-diffusion contribution to the weight loss should be negligible. These results were correlated with existing data to give a reliable measure of the real vapor pressure of silver. Secondly, measurements made using knife-edge orifices were corrected using the surface-diffusion theory of Winterbottom and Hirth2 and were then compared to the real values. The experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. The balance was an Ainsworth RV-AU-1 automatic recording microbalance capable of measuring weight changes of ±0.02 mg on a total load of up to 100 g. The temperature was measured by an optical pyrometer signted on the bottom of the suspended crucible. The temperature readings were calibrated in a separate experiment in which pyrometer measurements were made while at the same time thermocouple readings were taken of the temperature at the inside top and bottom of the crucible. The range of reproducibility with this technique was ±4°C. A constant voltage source maintained a temperature of ±2°C at 1200°C over 10 hr. Silver of 99.99 pct purity was used in nonporous alumina crucibles. Lids of molybdenum, tantalum, or magnesia were cemented to the crucible using a sodium silicate cement. One of the important problems in the design of structures and machine parts subjected to rapidly applied loads is the determination of the strength and ductility of the material itself under such conditions. Realizing the need for such information, many investigations have been carried out in the past. Most of these experiments have been made using notched bars in bending either with the Charpy or Izod impact machine. While yielding valuable data on the effect of notches in the energy absorption of the material and on the condition of heat-treatment, this form of test does not lend itself readily to a determination of fundamental stress-strain relations. For this and other reasons, more attention has been paid recently to the tension impact test. An extensive literature already exists on the subject and only those investigations somewhat closely related to the present paper will be mentioned. For a more comprehensive list, the reader is referred to the Symposium on Impact Testing or the A.S.T.M., 1938. The work of Mann.' Clark and Dätwyler,2 Nádai and Manjoine,3 Winlock and Leiter,4 Deutler,5 and Brinkmann,6 however, deserves especial mention. In most of the previous investigations on the subject, when stress-strain relations were obtained under high rates of loading, it was the common procedure to determine stresses based on the original area and strains based on the original length. Stress-strain curves were then constructed by P ALo plotting So = 1/A0 as a function of eo = ALr,o where A0 and Lo refer to the original area and gauge length, respectively. At present there exists a paucity of true stress-strain data in the impact problem. The advantages of constructing so-called true stress-strain curves in order to reveal the fundamental physical properties of the material for the tension test were discussed recently by one of the authors.7'8 It was shown that the true physical behavior of the material in the tension test could best be represented P by plotting the average true stress, S = 2P as a function of 6 = q' = log —r = log ~9L where P, A, L, S, E, and q' refer to the load, the cross-sectioned area while the load P is applied, the actual gauge length, the average true stress, the true strain and true reduction in area, respectively. Besides giving a better physical representation, the method has certain additional advantages in that the stress-strain curve so plotted becomes a straight line from the maximin load point to fracture. The construction of such curves, however, while comparatively simple for the slow rates of loading customarily used in the tension test, presents certain dificulties for tensile impact in that both loads and diameters are required throughout the test. During the past few years there has been a growing demand by coal operators for detailed information about the performance characteristics of the various dryers now being manufactured, preferably in such a form that the information could be used to determine the type of dryer best suited to a particular drying problem. A few operators have been desirous of going even further, because they are of the opinion that present-day dryers are not properly designed and that fundamental studies of dryer design should be undertaken. This growing demand for a method of dryer evaluation and the indicated need for fundamental research resulted in the sponsorship by Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. of a project at Battelle Memorial Institute to investigate the thermal drying of coal. In investigating this problem, the most feasible method of attack appeared to be a survey of active operations to determine the present status of the thermal drying of coal. Data were obtained, usually by actual plant tests with the cooperation of the various preparation engineers and their staffs, for 9 screen-type dryers, 8 rotary-type dryers, 3 continuous-pallet-type dryers, 2 flash-type dryers, I tray-type dryer, and I cascade-type dryer. The testing program provided: (I) data for 24 coal-drying operations, (2) information about the inherent characteristics of the coals dried, (3) information about the previous treatment that the coal had received, and (4) information about operating costs. The data obtained through the dryer survey and relationships determined from the data make it evident that all of the types of dryers included in the survey can be operated with the same degree of effectiveness if each type of dryer is used to dry the sizes of coal for which it is best suited. It should be noted that it is usually undesirable and often impossible to dry different sizes of coal in one type of dryer. By use of the data in the report, any prospective dryer user, having determined the surface moisture percentage and screen-size analysis of the coal to be dried, the tons of water to be removed per hour, and the final surface moisture percentage desired, should be able to determine with a fair degree of accuracy: (I) the difficulty of the drying problem, (2) the approximate cost of drying, (3) the required dryer inlet gas temperature and volume and exhaust gas temperature and volume, (4) the type of dryer to use, and (5) the size of dryer required. The method of testing the dryers and determining the difficulty of drying can be used by operators already having dryers to check the performance of their particular dryer and determine whether they are operating effectively. Considerably more information was obtained from the survey of thermal drying than was anticipated when the survey was first considered. The manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In certain respects they have a strong resemblance to those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia, but in this paper no careful comparison with them can be made. Viewed from the present condition of the manganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments. Youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide in the rocks of both groups. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate degree of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flows, largely of basic types. This has been named the Birrim System. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. Since these non-fossiliferous strata at many plaees are of a character which in many parts of the world are suitable for the preservation of fossils, and which contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim System have normally a northeast-southwest strike, and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts. From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed diagonally across their strike for upwards of 600 miles, to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence they probably extend much farther into French territory.

Previous research at the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology indicated that it is practical and economically feasible to place stiff back- fill in a cut-and-fill stope. This backfill would reduce wall closure and high stress buildup in pi1llars, thus alleviating rockburst potential. Three ;topes from the Sunshine Mine, of the Coeur d’Alene Mining District, were chosen for a test verification of this concept. Although the first stope was lever mined beyond the initial cut (for economic reasons), some vibrating wire stressmeter results were obtained and found to compare favorably with numerical predictions. Some other instrumentation devices were built and tested, but never installed .

(communication to the Secretary ?).-Dr. Pogue's presentation of the facts concerning the emerald deposits is very clear and convincing, and the only addition that I can suggest is a summary of previous theories of origin. He makes it evident that the pegmatite theory is the only one capable of explaining the existing relations, but upon certain details there may be some difference of opinion. If I understand the term pneumatolytic, it does not imply that all the elements concerned in a given deposit were transported as gases, but rather that the crystallization of these elements into the various minerals was favored by the presence of certain gaseous substances, notably H20, C02 and HF. It is highly improbable that the oxides of glucinum, aluminum, chromium, and silicon, which enter into the composition of the mineral emerald could have been transported in the gaseous form. The same is true of the metallic constituents of the parisite and other associated minerals. The explanation suggested, that solutions separated into liquid and gaseous portions, the latter ascending and forming the emerald in the upper portions of the rock only, therefore, seems to me untenable. When two formations exist side by side and one, A, is mineralized while the other, B, is barren, the possible explanations may he classed as (1) chemical, and (2) physical. 1. Some chemical feature of A not found in B might have caused crystallization of certain minerals in the former, which did not appear in the latter. In the present instance both rocks appear to be so similar chemically that no such effect can be looked for. Pogue mentions carbon as a possible precipitating agent, but describes both formations as carbonaceous, so that the difference in the minerals of the two can not be thus explained.

THE writer has reread Mr. Ingalls' interesting article in the July, 1923, issue of MINING AND METAL- LURGY on "The Use of Spelter in Galvanizing." It seems that most writers, in commenting upon coatings of spelter on sheets and wire, dwell upon the thin coatings which these materials carry, and rightly so. However, they seem to forget that until very recently, in the case of wire, the manufacturer did not know how to apply a heavy coating of spelter to the wire, especially if the wire was to be woven into fence or fabricated in some other manner, because heavy coatings of spelter are exceedingly brittle. This is even true in the case of high-grade spelter, but to a lesser degree than with Prime Western. Because of this brittleness, it has been necessary for wire manufacturers to smooth the coating by passing the wire through tightly compressed wiping means of some kind, usually asbestos. This removes all of the excess spelter and allows only a thin coating to remain. The latter, as a rule, is malleable and the wire can be fabricated without material injury to the coating.
