After statement of the principles of similitude which apply to electromagnetic modeling, charts showing the inductive response of conducting spheres as dependent upon frequency, conductivity, and size are exhibited in this paper. The shape of the curve which relates intensity of response to frequency is significant in indicating the advisability of low frequencies in the exploration for conducting bodies, when consistent with the securing of a large percentage of the ideally possible response. Comparisons of theoretical response and that observed with models are shown, and relationships with the subject of applied electromagnetic prospecting are indicated. Maxwell Field Equations The Maxwell field equations summarize the physical laws that govern electrical field phenomena; they are the basis for the solution of electromagnetic problems. These concise equations, with adequately formulated boundary conditions, specify the complete electrical condition of continuous media, and the development of their solution amounts merely to a more convenient re-expression of phenomena already completely described. Thus, the immediate content of the field equations themselves is sufficient and sometimes convenient for the treating of certain questions (such as those relating to electromagnetic models) which are independent of the special factors of geometry, or the nature of an impressed field. preparation of specification coals for the utility industry is approached from the standpoint of a cooperative effort with the power company to assure that the shipped product will be a noncorrosive coal. Selective mining, coal preparation, the use of additives, and coal blending are mine-site techniques proposed as means for upgrading corrosion-retarding constituents of utility coals (CaO and MgO) while, at the same time, reducing the concentration of those constituents of coal (Na20 and K,O) which cause corrosion. Data obtained from large-scale boiler testing in combination with bench-scale physical and chemical tests are used as a basis for the formulation of mine-site procedures to improve coal combustion utilization. Electric power generation remains the greatest market for coal in the United States. A major reason for this strong market has been the ability of the coal industry to supply a superior product for combustion while maintaining competitive prices. Now that the coal industry is engaged in intensive competition with nuclear power for future energy demand, it becomes ever more imperative that superior coal products are produced. One important problem when burning some coals is a liquid phase corrosive attack on boiler tube metal in the superheater and reheater areas of the furnace where steam temperatures may exceed 1050°F. In addition to causing power outages and high maintenance costs, corrosion is a continuing barrier to the future development of more efficient steam cycles which permit lower generation costs when using coal. Research methods of the past which have been directed at finding solutions which could be applied at the power plant site have been only partially successful and are generally costly. This paper contains a suggested --method of corrosion control through investigation of the problem at the source of the trouble—the coal supplier facility. It is proposed that mine-site pre-ventative procedures be considered as an effective means of cooperative corrosion control between the power company and the coal supplier. Economic justification must be applied to the individual situation. This paper is based on recent work by Combustion Engineering, Inc. and the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University under a contract from the Department of the Interior Office of Coal Research.',' Results which are of importance to this discussion may be summarized as follows: 1) The alkali minerals of coal (Na2O and K2O), as measured by an acid leaching process, can be related to corrosion rate in utility boilers. As these constituents increase in a coal product, its corrosiveness can be expected to worsen. 2) The alkaline-earth minerals contained in coal, reported as total CaO and MgO reduce corrosiveness 2s their concentration increases. 3) Naturally occuring, alkaline-earth-bearing materials, such as limestone and dolomite, may be added to a coal to reduce its corrosiveness. 4) Coals with very low iron contents tend to be less corrosive. These results provide the groundwork for examination of the system of operations which occur at the supplier facility from the seam face where mining is begun to the point of loading for shipment. The Mining System Fig. 1 is a cross section of one of the typical coal seams (designated coal A) that was boiler tested during this research program. This seam is overlain by material which consists primarily of a gray-black shale. In the lower third of this seam, there exists a thin rock parting of less than 4 in. in thickness which is consistent throughout the seam. The floor material is fireclay. ASBESTOS is a general term embracing the fibrous varieties of a number of minerals. Of these, the hydrous magnesium silicate, chrysotile (H4Mg3Si209), a variety of serpentine, is the most abundant and useful to industry. All other types of asbestos belong to the amphibole group of minerals and are classified as: crocidolite, NaFe(SiO3), FeSiO3; anthophyllite, (MgFe)SiO3; amosite, also a ferromagnesium silicate but with iron content higher than that of anthophyllite; tremolite, CaMg3(SiO3)4; and, actinolite, Ca (MgFe)3(SiO3)4. PROPERTIES The commercial value of asbestos depends largely on the physical property that permits it to be readily separated into fine filaments of high tensile strength and flexibility, which, coupled with the fact that it has the quality of incombustibility of a mineral-in distinction to vegetable and animal fibers-makes it of unique usefulness for many purposes. To some extent, the value depends upon the length of the fiber, although extreme length is neither necessary nor desirable for most purposes. Chrysotile occurs as cross-fiber veins, in which the asbestos fibers are approximately' at right angles to the vein walls, with vein width- or fiber length-seldom exceeding 2 or 3 in.; also as slip-fiber, in which the fibers 'lie in the same plane as the vein or on slippage planes. A cleanly broken vein of cross-fiber has a pearly luster and may range from a deep green or brown color to light shades of yellowish green or cream. When of good quality, the fiber filaments forming the vein may be easily drawn away from their neighbors and exhibit a fine silkiness and pure white color. They may be twisted into a thread and when flexed between thumb and fingers are found to be strong and pliable. D. A. Dahlstrom—Mr. Falconer has done an admirable job of proving the adaptability of the cyclone to the beneficiation of a very difficult size range in the preparation of coal. The addition of the cyclone to other coarser size methods makes it economically feasible for the coal operator to rigorously control his marketed products at a high and uniform quality level down to the 48 and 100-mesh size. Furthermore, it should be pointed out that by utilizing the cyclone as a deslimer or classifier the —3 200-mesh fraction, usually containing large percentages of undesirable material, can also be quickly and cheaply removed from the clean coal. Advantages of such a step are several: (1) Reduction of ash content, especially where clays and slimes are serious. (2) lower moisture content of the final coal. (3) easier mechanical and thermal de-watering of the fine coal due to higher cake and bed permeabilities. The author has indicated that adjustable control means should be installed on the cyclone operating on a heavy-media slurry. This also holds true for the cyclone acting as classifier, deslimer or preliminary dewatering agent and is worthy of special emphasis. Such controls, while not necessarily automatic, must be simple, rapidly adjustable, and require a minimum of attention. Three methods available to the operator are (1) throttling valve on the feed line, (2) back pressure valve on the overflow, and (3) adjustable diameter underflow nozzles. The first two, while fulfilling the specifications, suffer the disadvantage of restricting capacity if severe throttling is necessary. The third method has little effect on capacity and easily maintains an underflow of correct moisture content. Several designs are possible, but two find the widest application. The first was developed by Robert Piros of The Truax-Traer Coal Co. and uses a simple casting containing two holders for underflow nozzles which can be rotated about an axis parallel to the cyclone centerline. These holders retain the underflow nozzle flush with the conical section walls. When a change in nozzle diameter is required, the new size is placed in the spare holder and rotated into place. A second design utilizes a soft rubber cylindrical tube which is compressed or released from three sides, causing the inner diameter of the tube to decrease or increase. Whether we have occasion to think of it or not, an adequate and economic supply of energy fuels is vital to each of us. It is interesting to look ahead at the way in which fuels from supplementary sources will begin to enter into the energy mix to help meet the long-term national energy needs. From 1947 to 1965, the average annual rate of growth of energy consumption was 2.7%, with total energy demand in 1965 being equivalent to 54 quadrillion Btu's. During this short period of 18 years, the cumulative output of coal in the U.S. was 9.6 billion tons; natural gas, 193.5 trillion cu ft; and crude oil, 45.9 billion bbl. During the next decade and a half the nation's energy requirements are expected to grow at an average rate of 3.3% yearly, with consumption of energy expected to reach an annual rate of about 88 quadrillion Btu's by 1980, or 63% over the 1965 level.

MOST commercial alloys undergo changes in phase composition after casting. This is a natural result of the fact that the alloys are not in a state of phase equilibrium as cast and phase changes will therefore take place, with more or less rapidity, in an attempt to attain equilibrium. The practical aspect of aging in zinc-alloy die castings concerns the changes in physical properties and in dimensions that may accompany aging phase changes. Harmful alterations have been reduced to a minimum and zinc-alloy die castings are being produced today that are so stable with respect to dimensions and physical properties that they are entirely suitable for most practical purposes1. In the first paper2 of this series, and in this paper, aging phase changes of zinc alloy die castings have been investigated and the possible influence of these changes on dimensional changes of the castings has been evalu-ated and compared with the dimensional changes actually experienced. The change of dimensions has been selected for practical comparison in these papers because the effect of phase changes on the dimensions of a casting is directly calculable; from X-ray crystal-analysis data of the phase structure. The die-casting alloys considered contain, in addition to zinc, 4 per cent of aluminum, about 0:03 per cent magnesium, and from 0 to 3 per cent of copper. It was shown in the former paper that the eutectoidal decomposition of the beta aluminum-zinc phase, while intrinsically capable of causing a considerable shrinkage, can have very little effect on the observed shrinkage of die castings because it takes place within a few days of aging, whereas the observed shrinkage continues for five weeks. ALTHOUGH the stocks of Lake Superior iron ore on dock or at furnaces at the beginning of the year were about 6,000,000 tons less than at the beginning of 1938, the steel industry was operating at only 52 1/2 per cent of capacity and continued at approximately this rate to about Aug. 1. Consequently the iron mines in the Lake Superior district during the winter and spring period were almost all on a curtailed production basis, governed mostly by the needs of the communities rather than by anticipation of ore demands. Many of these properties gave extra employment by prosecuting heavy strip- ping programs, and the underground mines by shaft sinking and rock development. All underground mines re- turned to full operation in September, mostly two-shift, five days per week. A few operated the sixth day. The ship- ping schedules were increased so that the actual delivery for the year exceeded early expectations by about 20 per cent. Final Lake shipments were slightly in excess of 45,000,000 gross tons.

This paper deals with the origin, definition and prevention of scabs on semifinished rolled-steel product. Mold coatings, which are considered essential in scab prevention, were found to be effective only in relation to the ingot surface of semikilled and killed steels and not necessary for the rolled product. That is to say, the scabs on ingots caused by having been cast in uncoated molds are eliminated in the soaking and rolling operations, therefore are not present on the rolled product. This fact, which is contrary to the average opinion, was established after extensive and thorough experiments had proved the ordinary conception of the origin of scabs to be incorrect. This subject may be of little or no concern to steel plants producing small ingots for the manufacture of small billets and bars, except as it may be of interest in showing why their surface troubles with scabs do not exist on the product of heats with normal pouring practice. But to the producer of large ingots to be rolled into slabs for large plates used in shipbuilding, it is a very important subject. Definition of a Scab The generally accepted opinion is that the individual scabs present on rolled products (as shown by Fig. I) are considered to have been individual splashes on the ingot surface. This opinion was found to be incorrect. Experiments showed that there were no individual scabs on the product that had appeared as individuals on the ingot surface. The single scabs seen are either pieces of a shell that is present near the bottom of all top-cast ingots, or a veneer that may be present on any part of an ingot improperly poured, as when the stream strikes the mold wall. This definition is based on a detailed study of scabs and their characteristics in which the following have been found true: Location.—On the product of heats poured without trouble, scabs, if present, are always on the product that corresponds to the bottom end of the ingot, and usually occur in clusters. This is true whether molds are coated or not. Shape.—There is no regularity as to shape, size or thickness. It is sometimes possible to separate a few pieces and place them together, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, indicating that at one time they had been united as one piece. If individual splashes were the origin of scabs, the foregoing would not be true. Instead, the splashes, which occur throughout the pouring of the ingots, would be present uniformly over the entire product and there would be considerable similarity in the shape and thickness of the scabs. Experimental Work Our experimental work was conducted on 200-ton heats of semikilled plate steel tapped into an oval ladle 15 ft. high. A review of Jones & Laughlin's Vesta coal preparation plant flowsheet in 1959 indicated that, of the three sizes making up the company's metallurgical product, the -48-mesh fraction offered the greatest potential for improvement. Efforts to improve quality and yield were directed toward the use of froth flotation. After laboratory and plant tests were completed, it was decided that treatment of the entire -@-mesh fraction of the coal mix by flotation was a significant step forward in providing better coal quality and recovery. Reduction of ash in the metallurgical coal from 6.75 to 6.25% provided material savings at the coal washer, coke plant and blast furnace. The Vesta preparation plant of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. is located on the Monongahela River, eight miles south of Brownsville, Pa. This plant is capable of cleaning 2400 tph of a mixture of Pittsburgh seam high volatile coals from the Vesta and Shannopin mines to produce a metallurgical coal of 6.75% ash and a steam coal containing 14% ash. Heavy media vessels are utilized to upgrade the coarse coal while launders and tables handle the -1/4-in. fraction of the raw coal feed. Cleaned -1/4-in. coal goes to boot classifiers where the 48 mesh material settles and is removed by bucket elevators. This 1/4x48 mesh material is then sent to centrifugal dryers for dewatering. As designed, the -48 mesh fraction overflows the boot as a 7 to 8% solids slurry and is recovered by cyclones and a thickener and then dewatered by filtration. The products of the heavy media circuit, the launder-table-boot-dryer circuit and the cyclone-thickener-filter circuit, are combined to constitute the shipped metallurgical coal. The Vesta-Shannopin mix is combined at Jones & Laughlin's Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works with purchased low and medium volatile coals for the production of metallurgical coke. A review of the preparation plant flowsheet in 1959 indicated that of the three sizes making up the metallurgical product, the -48-mesh fraction, containing 16.7% ash, offered the greatest potential for improvement of coal quality. This fraction was considered low, averaging 55%, while the rejects averaged only 33% ash. It was evident that while the boot overflow fraction represented only 6% of the product mix, a reduction in ash to 6 or 7% would reduce the ash of the metallurgical coal by 0.5%. The original plant flowsheet handling the boot overflow (Fig. 1) consisted of ten 14-in. cyclones treating 70% of the overflow and producing a 48x150-mesh underflow and a -150-mesh overflow. The cyclone overflow was combined with the remaining 30% of the boot overflow to constitute the feed to a 150-ft thickener. The cyclone underflow and the 48x325-mesh thickener underflow were fed to vacuum disk filters for dewatering prior to combination with the coarse metallurgical coal. The thickener overflow stream containing the -325-mesh material was split, 40% being recycled directly to the plant water system and 60% being flocculated and clarified in an 85-ft thickener. The underflow of this thickener was pumped to waste. Efforts to improve quality and yield on the -48-mesh coal were directed toward the use of froth flotation early in the investigation. A review of the fine coal flowsheet indicated that three streams should be considered for treatment by froth flotation. These were the -325-mesh thickener overflow, the -150-mesh cyclone overflow and the -48-mesh boot overflow. Flotation of the thickener overflow was considered basically to improve recovery by upgrading the reject stream so that it could be fed to the filters along with the thickener and cyclone underflows. The overflow from the thickener contained 3.7% solids and had an ash analysis of 33%. Flotation of the cyclone overflow and boot overflow were considered to upgrade coal quality as well as yield. Treatment of the cyclone overflow, a 5.4% solids slurry averaging 27% ash, would eliminate the coal thickener and provide a feed of flotation concentrate and cyclone underflow to the filters. Methods for analyzing flooding or cycling projects by means of two-dimensional flow calculations are presented in the literature. The use of these methods allows the determination of optimum operating conditions for such projects and provides information on pattern efficiencies, relative flow rates, pressure distributions and floodout histories. The accuracy of such analyses depends on the basic reservoir data employed, especially the absolute permeability distribution in the reservoir; however, absolute permeability data normally are determined from well flow tests and/or core measurements and are so limited in quantity and quality that they do not adequately describe the reservoir flow properties. A calculation procedure is presented for determining the areal permeability distribution in the reservoir. Use of the procedure allows verification of the basic reservoir data through the matching of past reservoir conditions, thereby providing proper data for reliable predictions of future operations. The calculation procedure is a numerical technique based on a mathematical model of the reservoir and is designed for solution by means of an electronic digital computer. Results from field application of this procedure are presented. Permeability distributions from measured data are compared to those calculated to indicate the need for the analysis. Comparisons of field-measured and calculated pressure distributions are given to establish the validity of the calculation procedure. The conclusions of this paper are (I) use of the calculation provides data that allow a match of past reservoir conditions and thus reliable prediction of future operations; and (2) the procedure should, where applicable, be used to provide adequate reservoir data for use in two-dimensional flow calculations and related reservoir analyses. INTRODUCTION One means of providing more precise engineering control over reservoir operations during all stages of depletion is to develop some type of model to simulate the reservoir, using information developed from the behavior of the prototype to predict the performance of the actual reservoir. The use of mathematical rather than physical models for this purpose has been gaining in importance recently because of the application and availability of electronic computers. Mathematical models avoid instrumentation difficulties and allow easier handling of large-scale problems. At present, analyses employing two-dimensional models are common, and thought is being given to the use of models in three dimensions. The use of multi-dimensional models is necessary to show not only what is occurring in the reservoir, but also where in the reservoir the phenomena of interest are taking place. Methods for analyzing flooding or cycling projects by means of two-dimensional numerical models are presented in the literature. The use of these methods allows the determination of optimum operating conditions for such projects and provides information on pattern efficiencies, relative flow rates, pressure distributions and floodout histories. The applicability of numerical models and the results of using such analyses have been presented through field examples. The references indicated here discuss fully the data necessary to build the mathematical reservoir model and the way the model is used to study or predict the future performance of the reservoir. The accuracy of the analysis of such projects depends on the basic reservoir data employed in the construction of. the model. In order to be sure the model represents the reservoir, it must be used to match some known set of reservoir conditions, i.e., to match past reservoir performance. The accuracy of the model is directly dependent upon the absolute permeability distribution in the reservoir; however, absolute permeability data are normally determined from well flow tests and/or core measurements, and are so limited in quantity and quality that they do not adequately describe the reservoir flow properties. There is always the need for better data and for verification of existing data. The purpose of this paper is to show the use of the mathematical model to match past performance in flooding or cycling projects, the use of numerical techniques to adjust the basic absolute permeability data if necessary so that a match is obtained, and in this way to generate the effective areal permeability distribution of the reservoir. A review of the basic concepts of the numerical model will be given, followed by a discussion of the data-adjusting technique for matching past performance. TWO field examples will be cited to show

In the combination induction-electrical log used at present in the field, the induction logging tool is appropriate for the investigation of moderately invaded formations. A new induction sonde with a radius and investigation about twice as large has been developed recently for the case of deep invasion. It has very nearly the same vertical resolution as the present sonde so that thin beds are defined as accurately as before. The characteristics of the new tool are described, the corresponding interpretation charts are given and field examples are discussed. The design of the sonic logging tool has been modified to improve the calibration and the reliability. The fact that porosity can be accurately recorded by means of the sonic log has prompted new interpretation procedures for saturation estimation, wherein the data concerning the various permeable beds in a given well are correlated. One approach consists of plotting transit time vs true resistivity, with an appropriate scale. With this approach, saturations can be estimated conveniently even in cases where formation water resistivity is not well known. In another approach, a comparison is made of the values of the formation waters computed from the re- sistivity and sonic logs. Using the concept of continuity, this procedure makes possible a quick determination of zones of saturation in shaly sands and/or in case of appreciable variations of formation salinities with depth. It has been found that the comparison of porosity from the sonic log with the apparent porosity computed from a short-investigation resistivity log may reveal, in many cases, the presence of residual oil and thus detect potentially productive formations; this procedure is valuable when the true formation resistivity and the resistivity of the formation water are in doubt. INTRODUCTION During the past year, the efficiency of log interpretation has been vastly improved. The improvements have largely resulted from the introduction of a deep-investigation induction device and from the application of new interpretation techniques that utilize sonic vs resistivity readings. Since the new interpretation techniques depend, in part, upon good values of true formation resistivity, the new induction log will be discussed under Part I. The sonic interpretation techniques will be studied under Part 11. Early in 1959, the 6FF40 induction equipment was introduced in the field. This device was designed for a better approach to true formation resistivities in deeply invaded zones. The greatly improved radial investigation of the 6FF40 equipment has been achieved without sacrificing vertical resolution. The first combination induction-electrical log, the 5FF40, was introduced as a standard tool in 1956 for the logging of wells drilled with fresh muds. The tool has received wide industry acceptance in the United States. 'The 5FF40 induction log has a radial investigation sufficient to overcome average depths of mud filtrate invasion. At 5d invasion, for example, the 5FF40 induction log will read about 1.4 R. in a water sand where R., = 10R,. At 10d invasion, such induction log would read 2.45 R. in the same water sand. In either case, the effects of invasion would not be sufficiently great to cause a water sand to be mistaken for a shale-free oil- or gas-producing zone. Some formations, however, invade deeply — in excess of 10d. Such water zones could be mistaken for oil-or gas-saturated sands unless the porosity balance' can clearly make the distinction. The flexure of geologic strata, a phenomenon of interest to geologists and mining engineers alike, is examined as a sheet bending problem in Coulomb plasticity. Fonnulae for the distribution of stress, strain, and displacement increments; volume change; change in the length of the central surface; and power of dissipation, as well as for the neutral surface shift are given. Strains of any magnitude are considered. The analysis shows that deeply buried strata may bend and develop "tensile" cracks under generally compressive states of stress. It is also shown that bed separation and high capacity props are desirable in mechanized longwall mining, a result in keeping with operating experience. Although speculative at this time, the analysis provides a rational working hypothesis as regards the problem of strata flexure and control. | he purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the flexure of geologic strata as a problem in the bending of a sheet of material failing in accordance with a Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The flexure of strata has an obvious academic interest to the geologist concerned with the mechanics of folding. It is of interest to the economic geologist as it relates to the structural control of certain types of ore deposits. It has an intimate association with mine subsidence phenomena, and is of concern to the mining engineer. Strata flexure is also the dominant feature of roof behavior about longwall workings. An improved understanding of strata flexure through a rational mechanical analysis thus appears desirable not only from the academic view but from the economic one as well. In the field, the most commonly observed feature of folding, subsidence, and longwall roof behavior is the permanent and therefore inelastic nature of the strata movement. Fig. 1 illustrates the physical disposition of strata in the vicinity of a longwall face. Inasmuch as most rocks (with the possible exception of certain evaporites) do not exhibit significant viscoelastic behavior, at least not over time spans of engineering interest, a plastic analysis is indicated. The analysis is meant to apply to strata whose deformation is dominantly that of bending such as might be expected in the remote roof about a longwall face.

The lattice parameters of a series of fcc alloys of cerium and thorium were measured at 93 " and 298OK. Lattice parameters were also estimated for 171OK. Substantial deviations, y, from Vegard's law were observed. Although y was negative at the two higher temperatures, it was positive and large at the lowest temperature. A variety of models, which have been proposed in the past, were considered, and the calculated values of y were compared with the observed values. The best agreement was achieved with values computed with Friedel's equation. THE purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of temperature on the lattice parameter and on deviations from Vegard's law of Ce-Th alloys. A large negative deviation from Vegard's law was first observed independently by Weiner, Freeth, and Raynor' and Van vucht2 in the room-temperature lattice parameters of Ce-Th alloys that form a continuous series of solid solutions. This observation was confirmed by Evans and Raynor. The allotropy of unalloyed cerium was reviewed recently by Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald. In two subsequent papers,5" these authors reported the influence of various alloying additions on the y= transformation, which occurs below room temperature. Although other rare earths tend to stabilize the double-hexagonal phase, thorium, plutonium, and scandium as solutes tend to stabilize the normal fcc phase. With addition of sufficient thorium as a solute, there is evidence that the formation of is suppressed and it becomes possible to pass continuously with decreasing temperature from the room-temperature phase to the fcc a phase. Thus there is a closed loop which is similar in many ways to the y loop well-known in ferrous alloys. A closed field also occurs in the pressure-temperature "equilibrium" diagram of unalloyed cerium. Because of interest in the effect of thorium additions and their influence on the a and phases, lattice-parameter measurements were made at low temperatures on the fcc phase for a series of alloys ranging from 10 to 90 at. pct Th. The results obtained at three temperatures are shown in Fig. 1. Giving the keynote address in the final session of a conference dealing with closely related topics has a disadvantage in that much of what can be said has been said. It also has an advantage, however, because it presents the speaker with the opportunity to integrate and analyse the material presented by the various speakers. I would like to look to the near future in Australia and the United States of America, to the risks, problem areas, and changes of a rapidly evolving post-industrial era-an era we are beginning to experience where industry no longer 'calls the tune'. We miners have been quick to point out and emphasize, that ours is a 'high-risk' industry in the world of business and commerce. Yet, clearly those who have survived, and been successful, have learned to anticipate and cope with risk and change. This ability has been a 'distinguishing feature of the industry's leaders who, in market studies and commodity selection, exploration and development, mine planning, metallurgical pro- cessing, and general administration and operation 1. identify areas-of risk or inevitable change, 2. analyse, test and quantify those factors of risk or change, and 3. design methods, systems, equipment to eliminate, moderate, or control or economically compensate for predicted risks or changes.

First the basic steps to determine the values present and the minerals involved which are the basis for the metallurgical testing are presented in this paper. Next, choosing the process or processes indicated for treating an ore are discussed. This is followed by the test procedures used, the results of which will indicate amenability to treatment. These test procedures have been developed, used and proven effective in laboratory evaluations relative to plant processing. Special, uncommon processing is beyond the scope of the paper. Evalutation of test results and incorporation into the preliminary and final flow sheet for plant design are discussed. The value of a flow sheet, with material and water balances, to plant design is shown.

IN connection with certain coöperative work carried on between the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the U. S. Geological Survey during the year 1918, it was the writers' privilege to make metallographic examinations of a great many test bars and other pieces of nickel-steel gun forgings. The material studied came from many different steel plants throughout the country and consisted both of forgings that had been accepted by the Ordnance Department and those that had failed to pass the specified physical tests. In general, these tests require a minimum tensile strength of 95,000 lb. (42,091 kg.), an elastic limit of 65,000 lb. (29,483 kg.), an 18 per cent. elongation, and a 30 per cent. reduction in area. An average chemical composition of the steel studied is 0.38 per cent. carbon and 2.9 per cent. nickel. The steel was of both basic electric and basic open-hearth manufacture. The object of the metallographic work was two-fold: to assist in detecting defects in the steel and, if possible, to suggest remedies for the same; and to obtain as much information as possible in regard to the relation of the microstructure of the metal to its physical properties. The greater part of the investigation was devoted to defective metal that failed to pass the ordnance specifications. Many types and kinds of more or less serious defects thus came under observation, but most of these were due to the attempts by the manufacturer to meet the enormous demand for ordnance steel with more or less inadequate equipment, and were soon remedied. Two defects, the so-called "flakes" or "snowflakes" and a certain "fibrous" or "woody" fracture, were encountered so frequently and were so disastrous to the steel that the greater part of the study was devoted to them. Considerable attention has been directed toward determining the influence of "artificial aging" on the room-temperature properties of the precipitation-hardenable alloys, as testified by numerous company reports and by references I to 4. Investigations on the properties at elevated temperatures are few, however, and have not always covered the range of times and temperatures of greatest interest. The present investigation was instituted to overcome this deficiency. The work was done for the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board, under the supervision of the War Metallurgy Committee, as a part of the "restricted" Project NRC-548. It has been released for publication by the Office of Production Research and Development. AS is well known, the high-strength aluminum alloys achieve their remarkable properties as a result of precipitation-hardening. In production they are subjected to a solution heat-treatment followed by quenching, to retain the supersaturated solid solution. The solution treatment is followed by "aging" (precipitation-hard- ening) either at room temperature or at a suitable elevated temperature. A considerable increase in tensile and compressive yield stresses results from precipitation at room temperature ("natural aging"). Through the elevated-temperature process ("artificial aging") it is possible to obtain values of yield stress considerably higher than those attainable by natural aging. The increase in yield stress is accompanied by a smaller gain in ultimate tensile stress and by a decrease in elongation. During the first stages of artificial aging the yield stress increases steadily until it reaches a maximum value. In this condition the material is said to be "fully aged." Further exposure results in "averaging," attended by a steady decrease in yield stress. In the production of the artificially aged materials, temperatures and times are selected to achieve full aging. The following important characteristics are associated with the process: 1.
