THE last few decades have witnessed the introduction of many new nonmetallic mineral products and changes in the use of many of those already well known. Among these is diatomite, formerly employed as a mild abrasive and, at one time, as the absorbent material in dynamite. Now nearly 100,000 tons a year are mined and milled into such things as filter aids, cement admixtures, insulants, fillers, absorbents, cosmetics, cleansers, etc. Pumice, commonly regarded as only an abrasive, is now also employed as an insulant, as light-weight aggregate and as a concrete admixture. With increasing use of insulants, light-weight aggregates, and acoustic stuccos and plasters in the building trades, both these mate-rials should find increased application. Very large deposits occur in eastern Oregon and have been studied by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Oregon State Mining Board.

Subsidence is controlled by a complex com¬bination of mining and geologic factors. For example, a compilation of worldwide data shows that, as the percentage of shale in the overlying rock mass decreases and the amount of sandstone increases, the angle of draw (and the area affected by subsidence) decreases. Limestone in the over¬burden appears to cause a more than twofold decrease in the angle of draw compared to a like amount of sandstone. Increased amounts of sandstone were accompanied by a greater surface subsidence relative to the mining height. The total thickness of overburden did not appear to influence the subsidence magnitude above super-critical panels. The greater the thickness extracted, the smaller percentage of that thickness shows up at the surface as subsidence. The greater the percent of the seam extracted, the greater the subsidence reaching the surface. The maximum subsidence above room-and-pillar panels de¬pends on the pillar height and minimum width as well as the other factors listed.

There has never been a time when those who are responsible for the operation of business of different kinds were as com-pletely at a loss as they are now, so that anything that can be brought out that relates to labor is, to my mind, of utmost importance. The Giroux Consolidated Mines Co. is equipping a five-compartment shaft at Kimberly, Nev., which will serve the Alpha mine. The depth of this shaft, January, 1910, is 963 ft., and of this depth 948 ft. was opened by raising; 15 ft. of sinking was done so that the bearers, collar-set, and three shaftrsets might be installed and concreted, and with this done it mas possible to erect the necessary surface-equipment for resuming shaft-timbering on the completion of the raise. The arrangement of the shaft-timbering is shown in Fig. 1. At the 1,000-ft. level of the Alpha, and 750 f't. SW. from the Alpha shaft, a 14- by 18-ft. station was cut, and a 25-h-p. airhoist was installed. From here the raising commenced on July 5, 1909. The raise was cut approximately 13 by 21 ft. in area, and supported by timbering with square sets, illustrated in Fig. 2, which shows the division into four compartments. The end compartments, which were used as chutes, had the center girts heavier than in the others on account of the wear from falling rock. The chute-lining was braced by inserting 8- by 8-in. stiffeners parallel to and half way between successive caps. Similarly, the lagging on the wall sides of the cage-way and the compartment for pipes and ladder was stiffened with 4- by 6-in. timbers. In the pipe-and-ladder compartment the chute-stiffeners were reinforced with 8-by 8-in. struts, and as the cage-way was partitioned off by braced lining, there was practically no chance of rock entering the ladder-way in case a chute burst into the cage-way. Over the two center compartments the last two sets were always bulkheaded with 8- by 12-in. timbers, shown in Fig. 3, and from the lower bulkhead the cage sheave-wheel was suspended. (New York Meeting, February, 1913.) THE Tigre Mining Co. of Mexico, owned by the Lucky Tiger Combination Gold Mining Co. of Kansas City, decided early in 1910 to enlarge its mill, which consisted of a concentrator milling 3,000 tons of ore per month. The enlarged plant was designed to crush and concentrate 6,000 of ore and to cyanide 7,500 tons per mouth. The extra tonnage cyanided was to be obtained from tailings which were stored below the old mill. Power was supplied to the old mill from four boilers; a 150-h-p.. Corliss engine and two Weber 60-h-p. gas-engines using producer-gas made from charcoal. The total horse-power required, including 60 h-p. used for machine-drills in the mine, was approximately 275. Cord-wood cost $4.32 per cord, 8 by 4 by 3 ft., and charcoal $15 per ton. The fuel supply in the surrounding country was approaching exhaustion; more than 150 mules and 50 men were engaged in cutting and transporting this fuel, and the unsettled political, conditions in Sonora were such that it would be practically impossible to keep an organization of this kind together. The price of fuel was steadily rising and at times it became almost impossible to get sufficient fuel to operate.

Recovery of the creep resistance of 99.99 pct pure Al was studied at temperatures 540°, 573°, 600°, and 611°K. Poly-crystalline specimens crept under a stress of 950 psi to a strain of 5.5 pct were allowed to recover for periods of from 1 min to 16 days under a residual stress of 4.4 psi. Increased creep rates upon reapplication of the 950 psi stress evidenced softening of the material. The activation energy for the recovery process was found to be 64,000 cal-per mol. THREE major observations have clearly revealed that the creep of polycrystalline aluminum above about 510°K is controlled by the rate of climb of jogged edge components of dislocations past the barriers impeding their motion: 1) Extensive polygonization, characteristic of climb, takes place during creep.'9' 2) The activation energy for creep equals the estimated activation for self-diffusion. 3) The stress law for creep coincides with theoretical predictions based on the climb mechanism.4,5 The decreasing rate during the primary stage of creep must be ascribed to the introduction of additional barriers to the glide of dislocations. During secondary creep the density of barriers must remain constant, the rate at which new barriers are formed being equal to the rate at which they recover. For this reason the nature of the barriers, and their rates of formation and recovery, are significant to a complete understanding of creep. It is proposed here to study the kinetics of the recovery of barriers to creep of high-purity polycrystalline aluminum in the climb range. The technique will consist of creeping a series of tensile specimens under a prescribed stress to given state following which the specimens will be recovered for various times and temperatures under approximately zero stress. The amount of recovery will be determined by comparing creep curves following the recovery. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used for this investigation was a 99.99 pct pure Al supplied by the Aluminum Co. of America in sheets of 0.001-in. thickness having an H-18 temper. The spectroscopic analysis of impurities gave Cu-0.004 wt pct, Fe-0.002 pct, Si-0.001 pct, others-0.000 pct. Creep specimens were machined with their tensile axes in the rolling direction of the sheets. Annealing in a molten potassium nitrate-potassium nitrite bath for 1 hr at 686K, followed by air-cooling, resulted in a grain diameter of from 0.22 to 0.27 mm. Creep machines were equipped with constant stress lever arms of the type suggested by Fullman, Carreker, and Fishher,' which maintained the applied stress to within 0.04 pct of the reported value of 950 psi. Creep strains were calculated from extensions over a 6-in. gage section to the nearest 3 X 10"5. The temperatures of testing, 540°, 573", 600°, and 611°K, were obtained by immersing the specimen and extensometer assembly in a molten KNO2-KNO3 bath. Temperatures during the periods of creeping could be maintained constant to within better than ± 1°K. Correlation of creep data at different temperatures of testing demanded the use of an appropriate temperature-compensated time 8. To provide identical initial conditions for the recovery all specimens were first crept to a temperature-compensated time of = 47 X 10-14 min which resulted in a creep strain of 0.055 + 0.005 regardless of the creep temperature. During recovery, a small stress (4.4 psi) was permitted to remain upon the specimens to maintain tautness in the pulling assembly and to prevent mechanical damage to the soft specimen. THE Seventh International Petroleum Exposition and Congress to be held in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 4 to 11, inclusive, in true western spirit promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Exposition has become an established institution. It gives opportunity to petroleum engineers, technologists, and operators to see each year at one place what the tool makers and machinery manufacturers have to offer which is new or better. It has truly become a place "where men, methods and machinery meet." It is also a convenient focus for technical meetings of various kinds devoted to petroleum and natural gas problems. 'The Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. has for several years held its chief fall meeting at Tulsa just preceding the opening of the Es- position. This year our meeting will be on Oct. 2 and 3 and it will be held as usual at Hotel Mayo. The Mid- Continent Oil and Gas Association will, as usual, hold a meeting during the Exposition and this year the Petroleum Division of the A. S. M. E. will hold a three- day session, Oct. 6-8, in the auditorium on the Esposition grounds. In all, six technical sessions are planned by this Society, and aside from reports of committees some 20 technical papers are to be presented. Members of the Institute should attend its own meeting and stay over for as many days as possible for the other meeting at which they will hear and see much of helpful interest.

The first production on the Island of Trinidad was discovered 29 years ago; 13,275 acres were proved for oil and gas to the end of 1937, and 145,076,700 bbl. was produced from 2661 wells, or 10,928 bbl per acre. The production of oil in 1936 was 13,237,030 bbl. and in 1937 a new peak of 15,498,350 bbl. was reached. During November 1937, the daily average production was 43,350 bbl., or 35 bbl. per well, while the maximum gas production was 45 million cubic feet daily. Two hundred fifty wells were completed during 1937 and 15 abandoned. At the end of last year, 800 wells had been temporarily shut down, 1235 were producing oil and gas, and 2 were producing gas only. Six hundred seventy-nine dry wells had been drilled to the end of 1937. At the end of November 1937, the following oil-producing methods were in use: 395 wells flowing, 491 pumping, 97 on air-gas lift and 252 wells miscellaneous. There were no flooding operations. The oil is produced from the Miocene and Eocene and is of both asphalt and paraffin base. The gas produced averaged approximately 1050 B.t.u. per cu. ft. with 0.8 gal. of gasoline per 1000 cubic feet.

This paper, descriptive of a single mine, is presented in the belief that it may furnish useful suggestions to mine-managers encountering similar problems; and it includes the details which will enable them to estimate the value of the methods employed—especially where these depart from common practice. Tt should be added, however, that this mine is not typical of the San Juan district, but differs markedly from neighboring mines in physical conditions and metallurgical requirements. The Liberty Bell mine is situated in San Miguel county, Colo., on the west front of the San Juan mountains, 2 miles north of Telluride. The vein was discovered in 1876 by Wm. L. Cornett, who, with subsequeilt locators, took up claims along the apex. A few hundred feet of development-work was accomplished, and a few? tons of ore were smelted or milled; but profitable working proved impossible under existing

HISTORY shows that the nation which makes the most steel is the most likely to win wars. Today the course of war shows that the nations which get there first with the most steel of the right kind will be the ones to win. Not only the most steel, mind you, but the right kind. Adequate production, which was enough for victory before the days of totally mechanized warfare of 1943, must now be accompanied by still better quality as well as more effective distribution. Further, both production and distribution must be flexible enough to permit rapid shifts from one weapon to another for use in varying elements in varying geographical areas. Thus the problem of making enough steel of the right kind at the right time in the face of changing requirements dictated by experience has been and will remain highly complex. This does riot permit us to ease our restrictions on nonessential use. War is a complex business, like the job of making steel for war. Each time we solve one problem, another pops its head up. Yet we are making some progress.

THIS paper deals with the- methods of mining the high-grade clays of California. Although the majority of the clay pits in the state are operated on a scale that is small by comparison with most metal mines, this very fact results in a diversity of methods and gives rise to problems of selection of the method best suited to given conditions. Two or three operators in California produce approximately 500 tons per day of a single kind of clay from a single pit. About five varieties of clay are mined on a scale of 200 to 400 tons per day; not over fifteen varieties are mined on a? scale of 50 to 200 tons per day; and more than 50 varieties are mined at a rate of less than 50 tons per day. It is the aim of this paper to delimit, insofar as the data at hand permit, the conditions and scale of operations that favor the selection of each dominant method of mining that is actually being applied at California properties. Details of the occurrence and utilization of the clays of California have been given in a recent bulletin and are not considered here.

DURING 1934 conditions in the production division of the petroleum industry were reasonably satisfactory but nevertheless a decided feeling of insecurity existed largely because of the uncertainty of controlling production to consumptive demand. Over-production, especially in the East Texas field, threatened a general collapse of crude prices but in spite of this, posted prices were high. Stimulated by the prevailing posted prices, wildcatting activities were wide-spread. Although a number of small discoveries were made, particularly in the Gulf Coast belt and Oklahoma, no fields of major importance, unless it was the Fitts pool in Southern Oklahoma, were brought in. Meanwhile, the Petroleum Division of the A.I.M.E. continued its activities. It sponsored the collection of production and geological data on both foreign and domestic fields. The data on all but a few producing districts in the world were published in the "Petroleum Development and Technology" volume of the "Transactions" and comprise one of the most complete tabula¬tions of this sort ever published. Work of this kind is being continued.

The only complete phase diagram investigation of the Ti-W system is by Maykuth and coworkers,&apos; Fig. 1. Although previous work by Gonser2 indicated complete miscibility, later investigations3°5 essentially confirmed the diagram depicted in Fig. 1. The present study was undertaken because preliminary results on metal-rich ternary Ti-W-C alloys indicated complete solid solubility between 0 titanium and tungsten at temperatures above 1300°C—in contradiction to the presently accepted diagram. The powdered elements, as well as crystal bar titanium and tungsten sheet, were used in the preparation of the experimental alloys. The iodide titanium, obtained from Foote Mineral Co., Exton, Pa., had a total impurity content of less than 410 ppm, of which 150 ppm were interstitials (H, O, N, C). The overall purity of the titanium powder (Var-Lac-Oid Chemical Co., New York) was better than 99.7 pct. Major contaminants, in ppm, included: 0, 800; N, 10; H, 1500; Fe + Co + Ni + Cu + Zn, 50; C1, 200. The measured lattice parameters of the titanium were a = 2.94A and c = 4.68,A. The tungsten sheet and the tungsten powder (Wah Chang Corp., Albany, Ore.) contained the following impurities (in ppm, values in parentheses refer to the sheet tungsten): Mo, 50 (70); 0, 140 (110); Fe, 20 (60); Ni, 20 (not determined); N, 110 (not determined); sum of other impurities, <60 (<100). Samples from the iodide titanium bar stock and from tungsten sheet were prepared by repeated melting of the chipped materials in a nonconsumable electrode arc furnace under high-purity helium. The melted alloys were heavily cored, and homogeneity of the alloys could only be achieved after prolonged heat treatments at subsolidus temperatures. The majority of the alloys were therefore prepared by cold compacting the well-mixed powders in steel dies and pre-homogenizing the compacts for 6 hr at 1300°C in a tungsten-element furnace. The vacuum was better than 10"6 Torr, but for additional protection the sample container was wrapped in zirconium foil. Both preparation methods led to identical results. The measurements of the solidus temperatures were carried oat in the Pirani-type furnace described in a previous paper.6 Incipient melting in alloys containing between 20 and 90 at. pct W was rather difficult to detect visually, and therefore a photoelectric transducer system7 was employed to indicate the phase change. For the investigation of the solid-state equilibria, the specimens were first homogenized for 2 hr at slightly subsolidus temperatures in the Pirani fur- nace and then reequilibrated at, and rapidly cooled (-100°C per sec) from, the selected equilibrium temperatures. After the runs, the alloys were analyzed microscopically and by X-ray diffraction. With the exception of spot checks for oxygen and nitrogen in processed alloys, no other chemical analyses were performed. However, as the weight changes of the alloys during processing were within 0.05 pct and the lattice parameters of indeqendently prepared alloy series agreed within 0.0015A, it is reasonable to assume that no significant concentration shifts with respect to the nominal compositions had occurred. AT the New York meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers held in February, 1926, W. H. Bassett and J. C. Bradley presented a paper entitled "Exudations on Copper Castings."&apos; The purpose of the present paper, as the title suggests, is to call attention to somewhat similar phenomena which the authors have encountered in brass and bronze. From a study of the examples given, a more-or-less speculative theory of "inverse segregation" is advanced. Protuberances on Admiralty Brass In the rolling mill of the Scovill Manufacturing Co., there have been found quite commonly bars of certain alloys which had a sort of shaggy roughness on the surface due to slight metallic protuberances. No special attention was paid to these until some bars were found on which these protuberances were heavy enough at the bottom of the bars to produce a blistered appearance. A sample of the protuberances was milled off the surface of the bar illustrated (Fig. la) and upon analysis was found to contain 66.66 per cent. copper, 4.02 per cent. tin and 0.03 per cent. lead, whereas the average composition of the bar was 70.21 per cent. copper, 1.21 per cent. tin, and 0.01 per cent. lead. A sample of the shaggy-rough protuberances at the very top of a bar was also analyzed and was found to contain 2.45 per cent. tin, indicating that it was probably of the same origin as the blistered areas. These results were not entirely unexpected for previous analyses of this alloy had revealed that the surface was richer in tin than the rest of the bar. This, of course, is contrary to what we would expect from a consideration of the equilibrium diagram and has been called "inverse segregation." Fig. 16 is a cross-section of a bar through the protuberances on the surface. It reveals that there is a decidedly different structure through the raised areas and seems to indicate that the bar originally solidified

THE iron and steel industry spent $1,170,000,000 in 1952 for improvements and expansion, with an accompanying rise of 9 million net tons in capacity to 117.5 million tons of ingots and steel for castings. More than $4,600,000,000 has been invested in the seven years following World War 11. An average of $1260 has been laid out every minute during those seven years for an increase in capacity of 25.6 million tons.

In this paper, some applications of remote terminal computer time-sharing to mining geophysics are discussed. Examples are presented and evaluations are made. The evaluations are based largely upon one and one-half years experience with the General Electric Mark I and Mark II systems. In both systems, a terminal is placed at the user&apos;s location. The terminal consists of a teletypewriter and a paper tape system. Input is on paper tape or keyboard. The output is printed on paper and may also be placed on paper tape if desired. Available languages consist of BASIC, FORTRAN and ALGOL. The time-sharing system is considered very useful. In large part this is because the terminal is available for use as the need arises, much like a slide rule or calculator. Useage is varied. Geophysical field data can be put on paper tape and be computer reduced, for the most part by clerical personnel. Time-sharing is excellent for statistical studies. The system is adequate to generate geophysical parameter values derived from simple models of the subsurface and to make comparisons with field data.

The results of an inquiry into the structural nature of some 70 iron alloys containing both nickel and chromium over a considerable range of concentration are briefly described in this paper. This study is a part of a comprehensive program of investigation into alloys involving chromium in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research 1aboratories. All the compositions studied contained carbon in amount comparable to commercial alloys. The B Constituent In addition to locating the limits of composition for the three principal types of structure (polyhedral ferrite, martensite and austenite) and their combinations, certain other features of the system were observed. A hitherto undescribed brittle constituent (designated here as the "B constituent") was discovered. It is very hard, non-magnetic and forms in two modes from chrome-ferrite by recrystallization. It is the stable low-temperature condition for the equal-proportion chromium-iron materials containing less than 10 per cent. nickel. Although it partakes of the nature of an inter-metallic compound, yet it may exist over a considerable range of composition. It is non-existent above a temperalure zone, varying with composition, from 800° C. to 950° C., and heating above this critical temperature develops chrome ferrite persistent after average cooling rate; a few hours just below this temperature will develop the complicated brittle crystalline type. The B constituent, when found in the grain boundaries of alloys of lower chromium content, contributes a serious brittleness removable, however, by heating and cooling rapid enough to prevent its re-format&apos;ion. By suitable means of precipitution, the hard B constituent can be made to strengthen the already stiff alloy matrix in the manner of submicro-scopic particles, as exemplified in duralumin or the Sykes iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys.
