DURING the past twelve years the underground shaft of the United States mine at Bingham has been sunk an additional 2000 ft. with stations and pockets cut every 200 ft. without interrupting the mining of 600 tons of ore per day and the advancing of 1500 ft. of development per month. Following is a brief description of the way the joint work is conducted. The vertical underground shaft is a three-compartment shaft with outside dimensions of 6 ft. 4 in. by 15 ft. 6 in., and inside dimensions for each compartment of 4 ft. 2 in. by 4 ft. 8 in. The manway compartment of the main shaft is used as the hoisting compartment in sinking operations; it is partially lined with 2 by 12-in, lagging and a bucket is used without guides or crosshead. Preparatory work includes the placing of a bulkhead in the manway compartment, 60 ft. above the lowest station or level, the installation of a hoist, a head sheave, a fleet sheave, a-signal system, air and water lines, and a trap door for handling waste.

9.3-1. Introduction. The demands of industry for handling materials at higher rates and at reduced costs have had a very significant effect on belt conveyor technology. Although the general appearance of the belt conveyor today is essentially the same as it has been for the past several decades, the similarity ends there. Each component comprising the conveyor system has been continuously improved through design and materials technology to enable present conveyor systems to operate at ever-increasing rates and reliability. For example, twenty years ago the strongest commercially available, fabric-reinforced conveyor belting had a tension rating of 50 lb per ply-in. Currently, fabric-reinforced belts are available with ratings of 350 lb per ply-in. and steel cable reinforced belting is available with tension ratings of 3000 lb per in. of belt width (3). These technological advances have therefore enabled the belt conveyor to not only attain acceptance as a preferred method for in-plant movement of bulk materials, but also to be used for long distance transportation of bulk materials, particularly in areas of adverse terrain. The information contained in this chapter is intended to assist the reader to make basic decisions regarding the use and application of a conveyor system. The design of an overland conveyor transportation system or an in-plant process conveyor is accordingly beyond the scope of this article. Many comprehensive technical works covering the design of a belt conveyor are currently available from the manufacturers of materials handling equipment (6, 7, 9, 11). The design handbook published by the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association is particularly recommended (2). 9.3-2. Conveyor Capacities. One of the most important factors in determining the proper size of a conveyor system is the rate at which material must be handled. From rolling textures of polycrystalline AgCl determined as a function of temperature, changes in the amounts of the individual textural components are correlated with temperature-dependent changes in glide geometry. The preferred orientations are influenced by the slip behavior as follows: 1) pencil glide, characterized by (110) slip directions and a greater participation in the deformation the higher the temperature, leads to a(012) fiber texture; 2) low-temperature deformation, primarily on (110) (110) systems, generates the {237}-(11, 9, 7) component; and 3) slip on {111}(110), comprising a significant portion of the room-temperature deformation, generates the {135}(211) and {110}(112) components. Typical re crystallization textures are also presented and briefly discussed. SPECIFIC relations between flow mechanisms in crystals and the individual orientations or components in deformation textures are necessary for a thorough understanding of the origin of such textures. Within each ordinary class of crystal struc- tures there is insufficient variety in the observed preferred orientations to permit direct and unambiguous correlation between flow mechanism and texture. A second approach to this problem is the correlation of textural changes with some known variation in glide geometry within one substance,1 In this paper, the latter approach is applied directly to a material in which there are distinct changes in the character of glide with changes in temperature. Silver chloride, although a nonmetal, is reported to exhibit slip,2,3 fiber textures,4 and rolling textures5,6 crystallographically similar to those of the well-studied fcc metals;7,8 in addition, there is a marked temperature sensitivity of the glide planes upon which flow occurs.3 Previous investigations of textures in AgCl unfortunately did not employ methods sufficiently sensitive to define possibly important minor components in the texture, nor did they utilize the temperature dependence of the glide systems. Thus, in order to clarify the effects of changes in slip mechanism, this paper reports a survey, using semiquantitative methods, of preferred orientations in rolled AgC1. Inasmuch as the influence of prior deformation texture upon preferred orientations after annealing is also of interest, some representative annealing textures are presented.

In Monongalia County, West Virginia, the Pittsburgh and Sewickley beds lie west of the Monongahela River and underlie practically all the western end of the county. The average thickness of the Pittsburgh bed is 8 ft., where it is being mined at present, sometimes running up to 9 ft. The Sewickley bed is 4½ to 6 ft. thick and lies 90 to 100 ft. above the Pittsburgh bed. As the Pittsburgh bed had a known value, a large part of it was bought up without consideration of the Sewickley bed. When the Monongahela Railway was built up the west side of the Monongahela River, other interests bought up the Sewickley bed, as it was found to be equal in quality to the Pittsburgh, with slight local exceptions. The two beds, therefore, were owned by different people, and naturally each owner opened his mine and ran it without regard to the working of the other bed. Consequently, considerable portions of the upper bed were seriously affected for economical mining, especially on Scotts Run. In recent years there has been a tendency, influenced by the decision of the West Virginia Supreme Court, on the part of the operators in Monongalia County to try to coordinate their projections in the layout of their mines. A typical geologic section, according to the report of the West Virginia State Geological Survey on Monongalia County, agrees with Fig. 1. It is apparent that the rock above the Sewickley bed and between the Sewickley and Pittsburgh beds is of a rather friable ~lature, therefore it is easily broken in pillaring. About the only difference between this section and the geologic section in the Lowsville district is that in the latter district the rock between the coals is a denser sandstone and contains little shale and limestone and no evidence of Redstone coal. It is a laminated sandstone, and although it makes a harder mass, it is easily broken. While working in the Lowsville district, the author had an opportunity to examine a neighboring mine in the Sewickley bed, which was over a section being pillared in the Pittsburgh bed. The systems Ti-Crand Ti-Vhave been reinvesti-gated in the region up to 40 wt pct alloying addition using both conventional and rapid quenching techniques. The Ti-Cr eutectoid temperature was determined to be at 667° & 10° C and 14.5 wt pct Cr. The solubility of the Cr in a Ti was found to be less than 1 pctat 700"C. The P transus of the Ti-V system was found to be depressed to 510°C at 40 wt pct V and the solubility of V in a Ti was found to be less than 2 wt pct at 700°C. Investigation by a. d. McQuillan1-3and m. k. McQuillan4 on the systems Ti-Co, Ti-Cr, Ti-Cu, Ti-Fe, Ti-Mn, Ti-Ni, and Ti-V has cast doubt as to the position of the ß/a + ß boundaries in many of these systems. Their investigations were carried out using hydrogen pressure and/or rapid quenching experiments, as opposed to the conventional quartz capsule techniques employed by most other investigator.'" By these methods, the ß/a + ß boundary was found to be lower than that obtained by conventional techniques in all except the Ti-Fe system. In the latter, the ß/a + ß boundary was essentially the same as the boundary obtained by conventional technique.7' On the basis of rapid quenching results in the Ti-Cr system, M. K. McQuillan4 placed the eutectoid temperature below 550°C whereas other investigations using conventional techniques had placed the eutectoid variously as between 650' and 700°C,5 between 675' and 700°C,6 between 650" and 675°C,7 at 670°C,8 and above 625"C.la9l3 In order to check these results, a reinvestigation of four of the systems was undertaken using both conventional and rapid-quenching techniques. The Ti-Fe and Ti-Mn systems will be dealt with in anoth er paper, with only the Ti-Cr and Ti-V systems being discussed here. This review covers the northern 32 counties of the Texas Panhandle, an area 180 miles square. The westerly three-fourths of the district lies wholly within that great area known as the Llano Estacado or "staked plains." Six of the counties produce oil and gas and three produce gas alone. All of the production is associated with the Amarillo arch, a huge anticline superimposed upon a buried mountain range which is undoubtedly a continuation of the Wichitas of southwestern Oklahoma. Oil Production The production of the Texas Panhandle up to Jan. 1,1930, was slightly over 157 million barrels, 90 per cent. of which came from Hutchinson and Gray counties. About 33,000,000 bbl. was produced during 1930. Though this was about 9 per cent. above the 1929 production, it was over 8,000,000 bbl. less than was produced during the peak year, 1928. The present daily production is slightly over 40,000 bbl., which is the allowable production under state-wide proration. The assumed potential for the purpose of proration is 124,500 bbl. and the actual capacity of the wells probably would be in the neighborhood of 100,000 barrels. The total initial production of the oil wells completed in 1930 was 157,289 bbl. from 308 wells, or 511 bbl. per well, as compared to a 734-bbl. average from the 350 oil wells drilled during the preceding year. The completions in Gray County numbered 232, with an average initial of 614 barrels. Completions During 1930, 526 wells were completed in the Panhandle as compared to a total of 503 during 1929. Of the year's completions, 308 were oil wells, 169 produced gas and 49 were dry holes. Of the 3027 wells drilled in the Panhandle to date, 2780 have produced oil, gas or both, making the ratio of dry holes to producers about 1:11.3. Ignoring the 63 dry holes drilled in nonproductive counties, the ratio becomes 184:2780 or 1:15.1 which is slightly less favorable than that which obtained at the end of 1929.

ORE tests are made for the purpose of determining the correct methods of treatment for any particular ore. They should be conducted so as to insure that the results obtained in actual mill practice, on ore of similar grade and physical nature, will duplicate the results obtained in the test work. As the expenditure of many thousand of dollars may be involved in the building of the necessary mill, the testing of ores calls for extreme care and skill in handling laboratory machines, and a knowledge of actual practice to guard against the danger of obtaining results in test work that would be impractical to duplicate on a commercial scale. The importance of a correct sample of the ore is at once apparent. No matter with what degree of care the test 4rk is done, it loses its value when made on an unrepresentative sample. It is the first safeguard against future disappointments in the loss of capital and time. A number of failures in the past have been traced directly to faulty or lax methods in obtaining the ore sample.

In order to secure good results in the prevention of accidents, it is generally recognized that the desire for such accomplishment, as well as the aggressive and constructive action to achieve it, must emanate from the Top Management and permeate successively down through the "Chart of Authority" to the workmen. Several years ago, with the above as a basis and with full support of the Top Management, the Mining Department started a program of selling the foremen and bosses the idea that safety could be achieved and that it was desired and required. Using psychology, persistence and numerous other methods, the foremen and bosses were finally impressed with the idea that "It can be done" and "It will be done." With this in mind, new ideas were brought forth by the foremen and bosses regarding the caving operation and the specific jobs in the operation. These new ideas were taken up in round-table discussions and resulted in certain changes in the undercutting method and the actual drawing of the blocks. These changes resulted in increasing fragmentation of the blocks which prevented the usual hang-up areas in the blocks. With the rock smaller in size and within reasonable reach from the tapping drifts, accidents were prevented in the tapping section. At the same time, an enforced campaign of housekeeping throughout the mine was undertaken with very beneficial results. The foremen and bosses then, in turn, educated and trained the workers themselves to become safely conscious. In so doing, a constant re- minder was given on all jobs assigned that the job was to be done safely as well as efficiently. No man is assigned a job who is not qualified for the type of work required. Efficiency and safety go hand in hand.

IN a previous article' the authors outlined a study of the variables in rod milling and also reported data from a series of open circuit grinding tests on a massive limestone in a 30-in. x 4-ft end peripheral discharge rod mill. As a second part of the experimental program, an analysis is now presented for the 30-in. x 4-ft overflow rod mill grinding under identical conditions, except that discharge ports on the periphery of the mill shell have been sealed so that the products from the present series overflowed through a 9-in. diam .opening in the center of the end plate. A variance analysis has been made of the combined data for the two experiments, and performances of the two mills are compared here. Included in the first report' were descriptions of feed preparation, rod mill circuit, instrumentation and controls, and techniques used to evaluate data. Dependent and independent variables were defined, and variance analyses were made to test the relative significance of variables and to establish magnitude of error for the experiment. Significant data were plotted in various combinations, and conclusions were drawn from the graphs. The procedure and analysis in this series of tests follows the first tests and is not repeated. Data from the second series are recorded in Table I. Listed in the first three columns are the independent variables of feed rate (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 1b per hr), mill speed (50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 pct of critical), and pulp density (50, 60, 70, and 80 pct). The dependent variables, Pso, P100, reduction ratio, slope of the log-log sieve analysis curve, power demand, and Bond work index follow. Of these, only the reduction ratio and the Bond work index were analyzed for significance. Production of new surface as calculated from sieve analyses has not been included for this series because of the questionable assumptions that have to be made to satisfy the formulas involved. The large number of products obtained during the runs precluded the use of surface measurement techniques by the gas adsorption methods at this time; however, samples of all products have been stored for future reference. To test the consistency of the reporting of the sieved products, an averaged sieve analysis was calculated from the wet-dry plots obtained from the three product samples of each run. The resulting averaged analysis was plotted and the P80, selected. The relative deviations of the P80's from each of the three product samples with respect to the P80 of the averaged analysis were then calculated. In only two sets were the relative deviations (6.2 and 9.9 pct) considered excessive. In each of these two sets, one sieve analysis was obviously out of line; hence that analysis was ignored and new averages were computed. This reduced the relative deviations to 1.2 and 2.7 pct respectively. The relative deviations of the product analyses with respect to their averages ranged from 0.1 to 1.4 pct at 1000 lb per hr, 0.0 to 1.1 pct at 2000 lb per hr, 0.2 to 3.0 pct at 3000 lb per hr, 0.3 to 4.3 pct at 4000 lb per hr, and 0.5 to 5.2 pct at 5000 lb per hr. The relative deviation of the 80 pct passing point for 96 dry sieve analyses of the feed with respect to that of the averaged analysis was 7.6 pct. This slightly higher percentage can probably be attributed to a greater proportion of tramp oversize in a crusher product than is ordinarily found in a rod mill product. The last column on Table I lists the adjusted work index, which has been used as the measure of efficiency for the various combinations of operating conditions investigated. Efficiency increases as the index becomes lower. It was reported in the previous paper that the work indexes for the Waukesha limestone used in these experiments decreased as the product size decreased (as calculated from Bond grindabilities). That is, this limestone becomes easier to grind as the material becomes finer. This is unusual, because the work index for most materials as calculated from the Bond grindability has remained constant as the product size decreased or has increased slightly. Table II lists the results of Bond grindability tests at all mesh sizes from 3 to 200 and the work indexes calculated from them. To remove this variation of work index with product size from the data so that results would apply to any material of constant work index, the work index values shown in Table II were plotted against product size on log-log paper. From this curve (a straight line function in this case), the expected work index for the product size for each of the runs of the experiment was obtained. The work indexes as calculated from the reduction ratio and energy consumption were then divided by the corresponding expected work index. The results obtained are reported in percentages on Table I as adjusted work index and are actually percentages of the work index for the Waukesha limestone at the size in question. Multiplication of the work index value for a material of constant index by these percentages should allow the application of the adjusted work index curves to the material. Only the adjusted work index values, not the actual experimental values, were used for the variance analyses and for the graphs.

Reserves of perlite rock in the western section of the United States are immense. A geological report prepared for the Union Pacific RR showed proved tonnage of over 400 million tons in southern Nevada alone. Yet the perlite industry is not large, and most of the mines are relatively small. There are indications that perlite processing, thus far largely in the hands of relatively small com¬panies, is becoming concentrated in a few large companies. For economic reasons the bulk of perlite sold in crude form has come from three or four pro¬ducers, although many individual operators have sold small quantities to limited lists of purchasers. Perlite is one of ultra-lightweight aggregates. Owing to its outstanding qualities as an aggregate, variety of uses, and ultimate economy of use, it has enjoyed considerable popularity in this country in recent years. Marked foreign interest also has been evinced in this material.

In a recent review1 of the iron-oxide activity of simple open-hearth type slags containing lime, magnesia, silica, and iron oxide, it was established that activity values were lacking in the range of slag composition most interesting to open-hearth operators. That is, laboratory experimental results were not available for simple slag compositions having basicity ratios ranging from about 1.5 to 4.0 and iron-oxide concentrations ranging from about 10 to 30 pct. However, in order to estimate iron-oxide activities for the range of slag compositions of interest to open-hearth operators, activity values were calculated using ionic concepts of slags by following the treatment of Flood and Grjotheim.2 A study of these data indicated that the desired slag compositions were probably not obtained due to the limited solubility of the basic constituents lime and magnesia. Thus, it was decided to make additional heats equilibrating molten carbon-free iron with slags containing MnO, P2O5, and A12O3 in percentages commonly found in open-hearth refining slags, and to examine the liquid slag field over a greater composition range than that of the simple slags studied previously. The ranges of the constituents used in the present study are summarized as follows: Metal Pct 0 0.070-0.201 PctMn 0.005-0.142 Slag Pet CaO 24.45-41.90 Pct MgO 3.23- 9.21 Pct MnO 1.13- 9.62 Pct FeO 20.08-48.7 Pet Fe2o3 2.23-10.14 Pct SiO, 3.51-28.50 Pct P2O5 0.23- 3.65 Pct A12O3 0.43- 3.38 The experimental procedure consisted of equilibrating the slag and metal in an induction furnace provided with a carbon-arc slag heater as described previously by Winkler and chipman.3 The data obtained were used to establish both the iron-oxide activity values and the activity coefficients for FeO and MnO in the open-hearth type slags. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION I) Iron-Oxide Activity of Open-Hearth Type Slags—The iron-oxide activities of various iron-oxide contents of the open-hearth type slags, as calculated from the oxygen content of the metal by the method of Taylor and Chipman, 4 are plotted against the molar ratio of bases to acids in Fig. 1. The data represent slag-metal studies carried out in the temperature range 1530" to 1700°C. For the purpose of this study, the constituents CaO, MgO, and MnO are assumed equal on a molar basis in their effect on the iron-oxide activity; and, PO2,5 is calculated as an equivalent to SiO2 and A12O3 on a molar basis. The total iron content of the slag is calculated to FeO and is represented by the symbol (FeO) The points presented in Fig. 1 represent the results of this investigation for iron-oxide slags containing between 1 and 8 mol pct MnO and less than about 2 mol pct each of A12o3 and PO2,5 The curved lines shown in Fig. 1 represent the results of the summary1 of the iron-oxide activities of simple slags of the system (CaO + MgO) - SiOz - (FeO),. The solid portions of the curved lines represent experimental data, and the broken portions represent iron-oxide activities calculated from ionic concepts of slags. The iron-oxide values of the open-hearth type slags of this study are in good agreement with the values of the simple iron-oxide slag system. Only a slight modification is indicated. The results of this study suggest that the line for 20 mol pct (FeO), should be lowered slightly in the basicity range 1.5 to about 3.

FEW of us who waded ashore on the Norman beaches realized the importance of coal to a successful invasion. General Eisenhower and his staff had been aware of the essential need for coal and an able Solid Fuels Section had been set up under the direction of Colonel Robert P. Koenig, of Indiana. This organization met the requirements of the invading armies on their march to the Rhine. East of the Siegfried Line enemy territory, the Army Engineers were called upon for assistance. When the Engineers were advised that, in addition to their normal duties, they were to occupy and place in operation the coal mines in the Twelfth Army group area, plans were drawn up overnight and action was initiated immediately. The Sixth Engineer Special Brigade, a versatile outfit which made a notable record D-Day on Omaha Beach, was selected to handle the operation. Within 48 hours of the new assignment an advance command post was set up cm the west bank of the Rhine at Homberg, just below German-held Duisburg. The 368th Engineer General Service Regiment was assigned to the Brigade, and the British 44th Pioneer Group, including specialist personnel, was also attached. THE use of froth flotation for the separation of minerals has become one of the most important of ore dressing processes. Its particular adaptability to the enrichment of low grade ores has made the process an important factor in the national economy. The methods have been extended to the recovery of a great number of minerals. Among the few minerals which have resisted efforts toward industrial flotation is chrysocolla, a hydrated partly colloidal copper silicate. Chrysocolla, being a product of natural oxidation, has been found to occur in small quantities with many ores which are recovered by flotation methods. In present practice, these small quantities of copper silicate pass off with the tailings and are lost. The advantages to be gained by a satisfactory process for the recovery of chrysocolla is apparent. Any application of principles which points a way toward the satisfactory industrial flotation process for copper silicate would be of advantage. This paper presents an attack on this problem.

The pumping operations at the Chief mine have been unique in the respect that for many years the entire flow of water into the mine has been disposed of by pumping into natural underground " caverns" or "sinks." Volumes up to 4000 gpm have been pumped into these caverns with no apparent tendency for the caverns to fill with water, and it has never been proven that any of the water returns to the mine workings. Major pumping operations have been carried on during two periods, the first from 1918 to 1927, and the second from 1942 to the present time.

The process of comminution by grinding is properly classified as an art, rather than as a science. Like most other operations concerned in ore dressing, or in the treatment of nonmetallic minerals, the mathematical relationships of rock breaking are still obscure, and much disputed. If some basic formula exists, comparable for instance to E = RI in electricity, it has not yet been placed in common use. The absence of such a comprehensive mathematical background undoubtedly is the cause of many inefficient designs and installations, as well as of much poorly oriented experimental work. On the other hand, the mathematical immaturity of the process constitutes an opportunity for a real contribution on the part of those who enjoy mental pioneering. Some of the statements made in any such exploratory work may be little more than opinions, and it is to be expected that some will later be proved untrue; but such an evolutionary development is necessary if we are ever to arrive at the fundamental laws, the discovery of which can change the empirical art into a mathematically exact science. The most significant principle of comminution that we possess is probably Rittinger's law, which states that the work done in crushing or grinding is proportional to the area of the new surface produced. There is an alternative theory, known as Kick's law, which formerly was preferred to Rittinger's but which now is rather discredited. According to Kick, the work done in comminution is proportional to the volume, or weight, of the pieces broken, or to the cube of their diameters, while according to Rittinger it is proportional to the square of the diameters. Careful determinations of size distribution below the limit of sieve sizes1 indicate strongly that under ordinary grinding conditions the amount of new surface area produced is directly proportional to the net power input. Changes in the size ratio between the balls and the particles cause important differences in the proportion of the product that passes a given mesh size, but do not affect the total amount of new surface area; they merely change the distribution of the surface among mesh sizes. The principle of constant surface area is the logical result of Rittinger's law, and it may well have an important bearing on the comminution theories of the future. Formula for Ball Wear Grinding tests have been made in the Allis-Chalmers laboratory for more than 9 years, using a standard charge of mixed balls of different sizes; and a continuous record has been kept of the rates of wear of each size. These results have been combined and plotted in various ways in order to discover the relationship that exists

Like most other operations concerned in ore dressing, or in the treatment of nonmetallic minerals, the mathematical relationships of rock breaking are still obscure, and much disputed. If some basic formula exists, comparable for instance to E = RI in electricity, it has not yet been placed in common use. The absence of such a comprehensive mathematical background undoubtedly is the cause of many inefficient designs and installations, as well as of much poorly oriented experimental work. On the other hand, the mathematical immaturity of the process constitutes an opportunity for a real contribution on the part of those who enjoy mental pioneering. Some of the statements made in any such exploratory work may be little more than opinions, and it is to be expected that some will later be proved untrue; but such an evolutionary development is necessary if we are ever to arrive at the fundamental laws, the discovery of which can change the empirical art into a mathematically exact science. The most significant principle of comminution that we possess is probably Rittinger's law, which states that the work done in crushing or grinding is proportional to the area of the new surface produced. There is an alternative theory, known as Kick's law, which formerly was preferred to Rittinger's but which now is rather discredited. According to Kick, the work done in comminution is proportional to the volume, or weight, of the pieces broken, or to the cube of their diameters, while according to Rittinger it is proportional to the square of the diameters. Careful determinations of size distribution below the limit of sieve sizes1 indicate strongly that under ordinary grinding conditions the amount of new surface area produced is directly proportional to the net power input. Changes in the size ratio between the balls and the particles cause important differences in the proportion of the product that passes a given mesh size, but do not affect the total amount of new surface area; they merely change the distribution of the surface among mesh sizes. The principle of constant surface area is the logical result of Rittinger's law, and it may well have an important bearing on the comminution theories of the future. Formula for Ball Wear Grinding tests have been made in the Allis-Chalmers laboratory for more than 9 years, using a standard charge of mixed balls of different sizes; and a continuous record has been kept of the rates of wear of each size. A DEMAND for specialized knowledge has directed engineering curricula towards competency in some particular field or occupation. Preparation for life in a broad sense of completeness has received little consideration. Ways and means are needed for weaving some of the threads of liberal education into the fabric of engineering education. Any effort to develop a humanistic-social stem of engineering education will depend largely upon the content of the courses and the type of instruction offered. Many of the courses in college curricula are intended to lay a foundation for more advanced courses to be taken later by those. who specialize in some particular field. Students in other fields lack the background necessary to take the advanced courses and have too much detailed information, soon forgotten, forced upon them if they pursue the foundation courses. To develop a humanistic-social stem for engineering education existing catalogue courses selected should follow some general plan aimed towards broad educational objectives. Discussion of the paper of THOMAS F. DONNELLY, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1759 to 1768. F. (communication to the Secretary *).-The paper is of value in giving the public some first-hand information regarding a copper property that from various causes has attracted considerable attention, especially in Philadelphia, and which has also been the source of several fantastic flotations that had little to recommend them. Since 1906, no work has been done on this property under my direction, with the exception of a topographic survey made last winter by Mr. Donnelly, which was intended as the first step in a sound and logical system of development. From 1906 to 1915, desultory attempts were made to develop these orebodies, but as the work was not in competent hands much money was wasted and even more disappeared in ways regarding which it is perhaps not best to inquire. The result is, this interesting property has now practically no more ore developed upon it than in 1906, despite the fact that a new 100-ton mill is being erected, although, as I have intimated, it is today not much more than a prospect. Turning now to the scientific and more agreeable side of the subject, it is interesting to note that these Santo Domingo copper ores are invariably found in volcanic tuffs and that, in a geologic sense, they are all very old, for there are no evidences of recent volcanic activity in the greater Antilles, of which this island is the second largest. The existence of copper in tuffs in different parts of the world is a notable fact. Often, if not usually, it is present in mere traces, but not infrequently we find it in sufficient amount to be of economic importance. Thus, for example, chalcopyrite and bornite occur in the Tertiary tuffs of Japan, and a number of producing copper mines of that country are either actually in, or closely associated with, rocks of this character. Whether the copper minerals are original primary ores in the tuffs, or were derived from accompanying eruptive dikes, appears not yet to have been determined in any instance. In most of the Japanese cases of which I can find any record the tuffs appear to be associated with shales and limestones. These Japanese copper ores also carry some gold, especially in the upper parts of the veins; in this they resemble the Santo Domingo deposits which not infrequently carry as much as $6 or $7 per ton of gold on the outcrop.
