MUCH has been said recently concerning the depletion of the Lake Superior iron ore re- serves. Estimates given indicate a total life of the present known reserves of twenty to thirty years. Some argue that there is no need to concern ourselves about the possible depletion of the Lake Superior iron ore supply because foreign ores can be brought in to this country at a lower price than rich agglomerated ore can be produced from the lean domestic ores. Some fear, as a result of this, a displacement of the steel business from present districts to the Atlantic seaboard. Others show that foreign ores will be brought to interior points via the projected Great Lakes-St. Lawrence waterway. Others believe that the South, given better freight rates, will extend its iron and steel market into northern territory.

RECENTLY, a new type of superalloy material called TD Nickel* has been marketed.' It is a sim- ple, two-phased alloy, consisting of thoria particles dispersed in nickel of rather high purity (Ni-2 pct Thoz). Its mechanical properties appear relatively superior to previous experimental material attempting to use the oxide nonmetallic dispersion concept (except SAP), and superior to conventional nickel-base alloys at high homologous temperatures. This is derived from an interesting method of creating the dispersion, arising during chemical processing of the nickel and thorium salts in solution while reducing the nickel to metal. An evaluation of the thoria phase was conducted at this laboratory. Material and Procedure. TD Nickel was made available, consisting of several inches of 0.470-in. rod, extruded at a ratio of 64: 1, straightened, and centerless ground. Property determinations on this rod by the supplier at 1800°F showed an ultimate tensile strength of 11,400 psi, yield strength of 9600 psi, and 6 pct elongation. Specimens were removed from the rod for as-extruded metallography, and two 1/2-in. lengths supported on high-purity Al2O9 bricks were placed in a laboratory muffle furnace for exposure at 2000° F. The furnace door was left cracked to allow a slight amount of circulation. One specimen was removed at 200 hr for examination; the other was left for 2000 hr. Metallography. The micro structures obtained for the three conditions of exposure are shown in Fig. 1. Elongation of the grain structure in the extrusion direction is readily evident. The grains appear to be up to 0.001 in. (0.003 cm) long, with a length/width ratio of about 10: 1. Allowing for modest local in-homogeneities in structure, no significant change in thoria particle size or nickel alloy grain size occurred during the 2000°F exposure. However, etching depth varies slightly from one specimen to another, changing the number of particles visible. The thoria dispersion appears to be in the order of 0.01 (min) to 0.5 (max) p diam. The minimum diameter is difficult to estimate at X10,000, and may be less. Interparticle spacing appears to be about 0.1 p. Etching effects can be seen, depending upon grain orientation. A cubic etch-pit pattern appears in certain grains, apparently when etching is started by an anodic particle of thoria, Fig. l(c). The cubic pattern appears related to crystallographic orientation, and is prominent when the [ l00 ] direction is perpendicular to the plane of polish. The grains which present a ridged appearance in the photograph appear to be oriented with the [110} direction perpendicular to the plane of polish. Analysis. The thoria particle size was measured by a line intercept method perpendicular to the extrusion direction. Only particle sizes measuring 0.001 in. at X10,000 or larger could be extimated. Within limits of experimental error, particle size distribution appears to be unaffected by exposure, Fig. 2. To check structural stability further, a grain-growth evaluation was made. The number of grain-boundary intersections was counted at X500 on each of several traces normal to the extrusion direction for each condition. It can be seen from Table I that grain diameter appears unchanged by the 2000°F exposure. The slightly finer grain diameter after 200 hr may be attributed to variations in grain size from area to area in the original extrusion. From the present rather limited study of Ni-2 Th on, it appears that: 1) for time-temperature exposure up to 2000 hr at 2000°F (Larsen-Miller parameter = 57, homologous temperature = 0.8) thoria particles of the size studied are highly thermally stable; they do not significantly react, agglomerate, or diffuse; and

It has been shown for an important class of complex transition intermetallic compounds (a, P, R, 6, and p phases) characterized by "normal" coordination [CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, CN16/ that interatomic distances nay be calculated to a good approximation as the sum of characteristic atomic radii. Two radii, one for major ligands and one for minor ligmds, are specified for each atom, except in the case of CN12 where only a miaaor-ligand radius is specified. The same appears to be true of transition-metal phases of simpler struc-ture: Laves phases (CN12, CN16), and p-tungsten phases (CN12, CN14). In the case of known examples of the more complex phases, a simple rule is given which specifies these radii. However, only a fraction of the known examples of the simpler phases obey this rule closely. To include the latter phases the rule may be modified by considering the radii as linear functions of the weighted average of the Pauling CN12 radii of the two kinds of atonzs, with the radii weighted according to the over-all chemical composition of the alloy. With very few exceptions interatomic distances for both tlze complex and the simpler transition phases can b$ predicted with this modified rule to within 0.06A. ManY intermetallic compounds are known of composition A,By, in which A is a transition element to the left of the manganese column in the periodic table and B is a transition element in or to the right of it. Frequently the coordination numbers (CN) found in these compounds are CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, and CN16 (called "normal" coordinations by Frank and Kasperl). Well-known examples are the cubic and hexagonal Laves phases which have CN12 and CN16, and the 0-tungsten (CrsO) phases which have CN12 and CN14. In the more complicated (often ternary) phases, such as the a phase,2 the Beck phases p3 and R~, the 6 phase,5 and the p p atoms occur with CN12, CN14, CN15, and (except for a) CN16; in many cases several crystallographically independent atoms of one particular CN occur in the asymmetric unit. A large number of independent interatomic distances are found in these complicated phases, varying from 20 in the a phase to 94 in the 6 phase. These distances show a large spread; they vary, for example, from 2.358 to 3.278A in the 6 phase. In our analysis of these distances we found that in each of these compounds every atomic position can be characterized by either one or two radii. The CN12 positions are characterized by a single radius, The higher coordinated positions are characterized by two radii, namely: the CN14 positions by 4 in the direction of the twelve "5-coordinated" ligands3 (called 'minor" by Frank and Kasperl) and by r:, in the direction of the two "6-coordi-nated" ligands (called "major" by Frank and Kasper); the CN15 positions by r15 for the twelve minor and r:, for the three major ligands; the CN16 positions by rlE for the twelve minor and r:, for the four major ligands. We have expressed the experimentally determined interatomic distances in observational equations as the sums of the appropriate pairs of these characteristic radii and the value of these radii have been determined by the method of least Squares. Despite their wide range, the interatomic distances could then be predicted by the sums of these atomic radii with an average deviation in any one compound of 0.06A or less. The results are summarized in Table I. Inspection of the radii thus obtained shows that in the structures in Table I the radii (in A) are given to a first approximation by the simple relationship: Where CN is the coordination number (12, 14, 15, or 16), and A = 1 for major ligands and = 0 for minor ligands. The interaLomic distances can be predicted within about 0.1A by sums of these atomic radii. Another phase belonging in this group with CN12, 14, 15, and 16 is the y phase & B7, in which A is molybdenum or tungsten and B is iron or cobalt. Recently the M%C phase has been refinedE and the observed distances also agree well with those calculated with Eq. [I]. (In the original determination of the structure of W6FeV7 the F$(II)-W(II1) distance was erroneously given as 2.84A, but we have recalculated it fro? the published parameters and found it to b? 2.57i4, in good agreement with the value of 2.6A predicted with Eq. Subsidence has occurred in several areas of the upper Gulf Coast region of Texas, although in most cases this is not evident without precise instrumental leveling. As referred to in this report, the region com- prises about 7200 sq miles of the Gulf Coastal Plain and includes all or parts of the following counties: Harris, Fort Bend, Waller, Brazoria, Galveston, Liberty, Chambers, Orange, and Jefferson (Fig. 1 ). Topographic relief is low, ranging from sea level at the Gulf of Mexico to 300 ft or more in northwestern Harris County.

SYSTEMATIC methods of ore-finding are looked to the more as increasing production requires greater supplies of raw materials. Unrelenting search for new sources of supply is necessary, and all the skill of science must be displayed both in methods of discovering and recovering the minerals necessary to the demands of present-day life. To this end most national governments have some sort of a geo- logical survey and there is a growing understanding of the desirability for cooperation between federal and state or provincial organizations and also financial assistance, from state and private universities, mining companies, railroads and manufacturers. Such surveys are now being directed by well trained geologists selected from federal, state and university departments. Large-scale maps are being prepared and better geo- logical interpretation made, more thorough chemical and physical examinations are being made and original search is fostered, with the result that successful prospecting is better directed, new mining regions are more likely to be discovered, and the life of. old camps lengthened.

This paper addresses a process by which both the disposal and utilization of preparation plant coal refuse can be simultaneously accomplished with an attendant benefit of significantly increasing the percentage of extractable coal. A laboratory study is described in which coal refuse was successfully utilized as an aggregate in low cost concrete (coal-crete) mixes under simulated mine environments. Coal-crete specimens with compressive strengths of 14 000 kPa (2000 psd were consistently produced. A construction sequence and mining plans are offered for placing the low-cost coal-crete pillars in accessible areas in room and-pillar mines so that a substantial portion of the remaining coal pillars could be extracted. The method could be applicable in areas where mining procedures do not permit pillar extraction because of possible surface subsidence, roof problems, or other conditions. Possible structural difficulties with the coal-crete pillar support system are discussed. Using a discounted cash flow analysis, the economic feasibility of mining with the coal-crete pillar system is investigated. The cost of the system is compared to the cost of a mining system which would have less coal recovery. The analysis indicates that although at higher coal selling prices the coal-crete mining system may yield an acceptable rate of return, the alternative of leaving the coal pillars is more attractive at the present time.

I DESIRE to say that, owing to the number of papers which have been more or less crowded at this session of the Institute, and the fact that, as one of the Local Committee, I have the distinguished honor to feel somewhat like one of the hosts, I should not tax the patience of members at this late hour, but would have my paper read by title were it in any way possible to do this. But the task I have set myself this evening is to present to the eyes of the members of the Institute certain objects which have occupied more or less of my time during the last eighteen months or two years. The objects I allude to are some of the igneous rocks of this country, which, until quite recently, have been less understood than any others. It will be well known to some of the members that some of the cooled lavas of a previous age of our planet, when not directly coarsely crystalline and granular, were considered and spoken of as " natural glasses," or perfectly uncrystalline, vitreous, or hyaline masses of matter. Among the first results of the use of the microscope was the dispersion of this fallacy. Sir David Brewster, Mr. H. C. Sorby, and William Nichol (the discoverer of the celebrated calcite prism, which bears his name), had, with greater or less success, examined sections of various rocks and minerals, both by transmitted and reflected light, and also in the form of powder. But, until the genius of Vogelsang undertook the subject, these investigations had no permanent value, nor did they constitute an independent line of mineralogical and geological research. Since the close of his labors, by Vogelsang's premature and much-lamented death, the subject has been made one of renewed interest by his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Zirkel, as well as by Rosenbusch, Tschermak, and many others abroad, and at home by the commencement of a systematic study of the traps of Connecticut by Messrs. E. D. Dana and G. W. Hawes, of New Haven, and by the splendid set of described sections of the traps of the West which have been furnished by Zirkel to illustrate Clarence King's report. I had the honor of presenting a large number of thin sections of our traps at the Washington meeting, for the inspection of the members, with the aid of a table microscope belonging to the Smithsonian Institution. The influence which Au, Ag, Sb, Bi, Sn, and Cu have, both individually and collectively, on the activity coefficient of sulfur in liquid lead at 600"C zuas studied by circulating a H2S-Hz gas wlixture over a specific lead alloy until equilibrium was attained. Subsequently, the H2S concentration in the equilibrium gas mixture and sulfur concentration in the condensed phase were deterruined. The elements gold, silver, and antinzony (above 8 at. pct) increased the activity coefficient of sulfur. Bismuth had no apparent effect. Tin (above 3 at. pct) and copper decreased the coefficient. The influence of an individual element, i, on sulfur is best reported as the interaction parameter, riS, which is defined as The values o these first-order interaction zus are: ESzu = —55.0. These interaction parameters are used to predict the activity coefficient of sulfur in six fouv-component alloys and one seven-component alloy. Comparisons are made with direct experimental determinations. INTERACTIONS in dilute solution have been studied by many investigators. Most of the experimental work has been confined to solute-solvent interactions in simple binary systems and solute-solute interactions in ternary systems. Dealy and pehlke"~ have summarized the available literature on activity coefficients at infinite dilution in nonferrous binary alloys and have calculated from published data the values for interaction parameters in dilute nonferrous alloys. Interaction parameters are a convenient means of summarizing the effect of one solute species on another in a given solvent. Only a few investigators have studied interactions of the nonmetallic element sulfur in a metallic solvent. They are as follows: Rosenqvist,~ sulfur in silver; Rosenqvist and Cox,4 sulfur in steel; chipman, sulfur in alloy steels; Alcock and Richardson,% ulfur in copper alloys; Cheng and Alcock,' sulfur in iron, cobalt, and nickel; Cheng and ~lcock,' sulfur in lead and tin. The only reported work on the Pb-S system in the dilute-solution region is that of Cheng and Alcock.' Their investigation involved a study of the solubility of sulfur in liquid lead over the temperature range 500" to 680°C. The results may be summarized by the following relationship: S (dissolved in lead) + Pb(1) = PbS(s) log at. %S = -3388/T + 3.511 Experimentally, it was found that Henry's law was valid up to the solubility limit of sulfur in lead, i.e., at 600°C up to 0.43 pct. Their investigation did not include the study of sulfur in lead alloys. More accurate calculations could be made in smelting and refining systems if activity coefficients of solute species could be accurately predicted in complex solutions. One of the objectives of this study was to compare the experimental data with the values calculated from the equations derived from models for dilute solutions proposed by wagner9 and Alcock and Richardson. A temperature of 600°C was chosen as the experimental temperature to attain reasonable reaction rates and to minimize volatilization of the condensed phase. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The Pb, Au, Ag, Sb, Bi, Sn, and Cu used for preparation of the alloys were American Smelting and Refining Co. research-grade materials. All were 99.999+ pct purity except the antimony and tin which were 99.99+ pct. The initial alloys prepared for this study consisted of twenty-one binary alloys, eleven ternary alloys, and one six-component alloy. The constituent elements were mixed for each desired alloy and were placed in a crucible machined from spectrographically pure graphite. The crucible was placed in a vycor tube which was evacuated with a vacuum pump and gettered by titanium sponge at 800°C for 8 to 12 hr. After the gettering was completed, the chamber containing the titanium was sealed and removed. The remaining sample chamber was placed in a tube furnace at 800°C for 2 hr and quenched in cold water. The final operation consisted of homogenization of the alloy for 1 to 2 weeks at a temperature just below the solidus for the individual system. The resulting master alloys were sectioned into small pieces and a random choice made for individual equilibrations. Cobalt sulfide (Cogs8) used to control the gas atmosphere in the circulation system was prepared by passing dried HzS for 24 hr over a Co-S mixture heated to 700°C in a tube furnace. This material was then mixed with cobalt metal to give a two-phase mixture which, when heated in hydrogen to a particular temperature, produced a desired H2S/H2 gas atmosphere in the circulation system. Design features and operating methods at the new Ajo smelter are described in detail. Successful operation of a novel method of handling and charging wet concentrates to a deep bath type reverberatory furnace contribute to the daily production of 200 tons of anodes with good results from the standpoint of both metallurgy and economy. THE New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corp. is located at Ajo, Ariz. Large scale mining operations were started at Ajo in 1917, when a 5000 ton leaching plant was put in service to treat the copper carbonate ore that overlaid the sulphide ore-body. In 1924 a 5000 ton flotation plant was built to treat the sulphide ore and the leaching operation was abandoned a few years later. Changes in practice and additions to plant facilities have resulted in a gradual increase in the milling rate which now approaches 30,000 tons daily. Prior to the erection of the Ajo smelter, flotation concentrate was shipped by rail to Douglas, Ariz, where it was treated in the Phelps Dodge smelter. Construction of a one reverberatory furnace smelter to produce an average of about 200 tons per day of copper anodes at Ajo was started early in 1949. Initial heating of the reverberatory furnace was begun on June 21, 1950. Charging the furnace was started on july 8, and the first anodes were cast on July 14. Neither the anode furnace nor the reverberatory furnace has cooled since the initial firing. Fig. 1 is a photograph of the new smelter. Built primarily to eliminate the '300 mile haul of concentrate to the Douglas plant, the new smelter was designed to treat the Ajo concentrate, with a minimum of capital investment. A novel, and relatively simple, method of concentrate handling and furnace charging made unnecessary the installation and operation of expensive storage facilities and reclaiming equipment, and obviated the necessity of holding in storage large quantities of copper-bearing materials. (Patents are pending in the United States and abroad on the Ajo process.) In the selection and arrangement of equipment, consideration was given to the full utilization of all smelting facilities, reducing the amount of idle equipment to a minimum. The layout of the smelter is shown in Fig. 2. The important problem of internal transportation was minimized by arranging the reverberatory furnace, converters, and anode furnace in a compact group and providing storage bins inside the smelter building, within reach of overhead cranes, for fluxing materials and other supplies needed in the daily operation. This can be seen in the sectional view of the smelter given in Fig. 3. Incorporated in the design were many innovations in smelting equipment intended to facilitate operations and effect economies in maintenance expense and manpower requirements. Table I gives operating data of the entire plant. Metallurgy The metallurgical practice at Ajo is based essentially upon the use of a single, deep bath reverberatory furnace for smelting wet concentrate, without concentrate storage facilities. The large reservoir of slag and matte maintained in the furnace serves to equalize, to some extent, the day to day variations in the nature and grade of concentrate and permits

SEVERAL constructive and fundamental studies have been made in the analysis of data obtained from experiments carried on with batch ball and rod mills. The operating characteristics of ball milling in small continuous circuits have also been appraised. It is from these analyses that some of the theories of comminution have been developed. Relatively few studies of continuous rod milling have added significantly to the fundamental concepts, because seldom have they yielded sufficiently consistent results. Perhaps they have been too limited in their scope. Careful control of the variables in batch grinding is simple compared with that encountered in a continuous operation. This factor alone has discouraged many investigators. Occasionally results of systematic changes made in industrial rod mill circuits have been published, but usually the data are sketchy and are restricted because of the unwieldiness of the equipment used. The work, in general, has not been comprehensive; nevertheless it has provided empirical relationships that have bridged the gap between postulate and practice so that by proper manipulation of formulae, a mill designer can anticipate mill size and power requirements.14 Although operating variables of a small continuous mill are not so easy to control as with the batch mill, with present day devices, and with careful experimental work, consistent results can be obtained. Nearly four years ago, in the Process Laboratory, Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. began a systematic study of the effects of several variables upon the performance of the pilot rod mill. A mill was built in the laboratory to provide the versatility required for the proposed study. It was constructed in sections so that it could be operated, with a few modifications, as a rod mill 30 in. x 8 ft or 30 in. x 4 ft. The discharge end of the shell was flanged so that either an end peripheral discharge or an overflow discharge could be installed. Thus the performance of at least four types of mills could be studied merely by changing the type of discharge or the length of the mill shell. The grinding experiments were designed so that a study could be made of the way in which the mill speed, feed rate, and pulp density influenced the performance of both overflow and end peripheral discharge rod mills. Four sets of experimental data were collected from the four mill arrangements. The mill in each set of experiments was fed at four rates of feed depending on the length of the mill, at four pulp densities, and at five percentages of critical speed. Electrical and mechanical controls were in- stalled to regulate all these independent variables, and auxiliary devices were used to verify the precision of the controls at each point. The dependent variables used to quantify the experiments were the reduction ratio and the hew surface area produced as calculated from sieve analyses. These were incorporated with the energy factor by the calculation of both the new surface produced per unit of energy and the Bond work index.' Rod wear, as a dependent variable, was not studied because of the short period of operation for each run. Exclusive of repeat runs, each set of experiments yielded 80 products, and the total study at least 320 products, all of which were quantified. With the operating information collected, these data presented a bewildering accumulation. Statistical analysis has been invaluable in unraveling the confusion and in presenting a means of establishing the nature and the magnitude of the significant variables. Data presented in this paper are those from the 30 in. x 4 ft end peripheral discharge rod mill, Fig. 1, when limestone was ground at feed rates of 1000, 2000, 4000, and 5000 lb per hr, at pulp densities of 50, 60, 70, and 80 pct solids, and at mill speeds of 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 pct of the critical speed. These 80 tests have all been run at least twice, and occasionally a third time, to prove that the data obtained were reproducible. The techniques of operation and the methods of quantification of results are described in the following pages and the results analyzed statistically to show the significant variables. The variables are plotted to show the relationships that exist. A massive dolomitic limestone from Waukesha Lime and Stone Co. was used for feed during these experiments because of its availability and its tex-tural uniformity. This limestone analyzed 28.7 pct CaO, 21.0 pct MgO, 6.0 pct SiO2, 0.4 pct A1²O³, and 0.3 pct Fe²O³ and had a loss on ignition of 44.1 pct. The Pinto Valley, Arizona, plant of Cities Service Company is one of the newest copper producers in the United States, having started production in 1975. It is located a few miles west of Miami, Arizona, on the site of the Castle Dome Mine, a World War II operation which was shut down and its mill later moved and renamed the Copper Cities plant. The Pinto Valley concentrator uses six 18 ft (5. 5 m) diameter by 21 ft (6.4 m) long, 4000 hp, single-stage ball mills, taking crushed ore from four 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard and eight 7 ft shorthead crushers. It has a design capacity of 40,000 stpd but has higher tonnage capability for an expanded concentrator. The copper porphyry-ore is mined by two 15 yd and one 20 yd shovels (11.5 and 15.3 cu m) and is transported to the primary crusher by 150-ton trucks. The dump pocket is relatively shallow (14 ft or 4. 27 m deep); and because of the width necessary for the 150-ton trucks, it was designed to use the ore itself instead of manganese steel as an abrasion- resistant lining, although a heavy steel cap protects the dump pocket top edge. The pocket has a capacity of 300 tons of ore. Water sprays under the dumping positions direct a fog toward the truck being dumped for excellent dust control. Breaking of oversize is done by a hydraulic impact breaker mounted on a hydraulically operated articulated arm situated at the side of the dump pocket. Again because of the shallow pocket, no splitter is used to protect the spider of the 60 in. by 89 in. Traylor gyratory crusher, which is equipped with a hydroset mechanism. Crushed ore at 8 in. (203 mm) drops into the 360 st surge chamber lined with AR plate and then is fed directly to the 60 in. (1.52 m) stock- pile conveyor by an 84 in. by 20 ft (2. 13 m by 6.1 m) four-speed apron feeder at a rate of up to 4000 stph. Early in 1977, Cities Service will replace the four -speed electric drive with a hydraulic pump and motor with infinitely variable speed. They are also studying the replacement of the apron feeder with an 8 ft wide (2.44 m) belt feeder similar to those at Similkameen and Palabora. Peak crushing capacity would then be increased to 5000 stph. The AR plate in the crushed ore pocket was installed in large, rectangular sheets which required much less embedded metal to hold it in place than would the more conventional, smaller arid square pieces of cast manganese steel. For duty in the crushed ore pocket, where wear is not severe, the AR plate is a satisfactory material. The new Palabora Figure-8 crusher also uses this design.

It seems a specially fitting opportunity to present a paper on the alloys of iron and aluminum at the New York meeting of this Institute, owing to the fact that America has, more than any other country, originated and developed the manufacture of cheap aluminum. The Cowles, Castner, and Hall systems have all originated in the ever-busy brain of our cousin across the water. The problem of cheaply producing this valuable metal has been a difficult one, but to the writer it seems that the more arduous the task the greater the delight with which our American friend attempts to overcome the difficulties surrounding it, and the more vim he throws into the work. Another and equally striking proof of this is to be found in the recent appearance of the already wellknown remarkable work, The Mefallurgy of Steel, by Mr. H. M. Howe, of the Institute of Technology, Boston, Mass. It is to be hopel that this Institute will not be slow to recognize by some special mark its appreciation of this signally valuable and original work. The writer has been led to describe the following experiments, believing that so far no full and exact report has yet been presented to this Institute as to the effect of aluminum alloyed or combined with the metal iron. It has been a special object to make the material as far as possible a true alloy or combination of aluminum and iron, with as small quantities as possible of other disturbing ingredients, such as silicon, manganese, etc. In the material described in these experiments, the total amounts of other elements present (sulphur and phosphorus being disregarded as present in such small quantities) do not exceed about 0.5 per cent. Such material may therefore be probably taken as fairly illustrative of the effect of the metal aluminum upon iron. Since completing the experiments the writer

Some months ago I received a sample of a highly crystalline product occurring in the hearth of the shaft-furnace used in smelting the roasted niccoliferous pyrrhotite at Mr. Joseph Wharton's works near the Gap Mine, Lancaster County, Pa. Mr. Wharton first observed this product in cavities in the concretions in these furnaces about the year 1870, and published a description of it in that year.* Thinking that it might show some analogy to meteoric iron, he sent the present sample to Mr. George a F. Kunz, who turned it over to me, with the request that I should analyze it at my convenience. The results do not show the expected analogy, because the sulphur in meteoric iron is combined as FeS., while in this product there is only one-sixth the necessary amount of sulphur, which, however, seems to be combined with all the metallic elements present, forming a sub-sulphide of definite composition. I am informed by Mr. Wharton that he has had for a long time the sample which I have analyzed, and that it probably is about the same age as that which he first described. It is worthy of note that the material does not show any signs of oxidation, but that the crystals preserve a brilliant metallic lustre. The first two analyses, made by Mr. J. HIS investigation originated as a result of a pre-vious experimental study' of the magnetic properties of Fe-Co alloys fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique. Densities of powder compacts prepared for the magnetics investigation varied from 7.45 to 7.70 g per cu cm or from 93 to 95 pct of the experimental value of 8.08 g per cu cm for a fused alloy of the same composition.' While this range of density is considered sufficiently high for most applications, the highest possible density is to be desired for maximum magnetic properties. By applying a technique similar to the one described above to a pure electrolytic iron powder, Rostoker³ was able to achieve a density of 7.895 g per cu cm, which is the highest density ever reported for sintered iron. While Rostoker's work involved the sintering of an elemental powder rather than a mixture, it was believed that higher densities should also have been obtained for alloys using the above technique because of the recoining operation and the high sintering temperature. Consequently, it was decided to investigate the various factors affecting the density of this alloy with the idea that such a study might lead to higher densities and, as a result, powder alloys having magnetic properties identical with those of the fused alloys. It was believed that the principal reason that near-theoretical densities for the powdered alloy were not obtained was the interference of gases with the normal sintering mechanism. When present during the sintering operation, gases can exert several harmful effects: they can remain on the particle surface and interfere with surface diffusion and plastic flow; they can be released and, under certain conditions, expand the void spaces through gas pressure; or they can remain trapped in the pores and exert a hydrostatic pressure that retards elimination of the pores. Jones,4 Rhines,5 Goetzel," and others have given the effect of gases in the sintering of powder compacts an extensive treatment. Among the more important sources of gases in the sintering process are dissolved gases, adsorbed gases, air entrapped during pressing, and gaseous products of chemical reactions. During sintering adsorbed gases are partly released at a relatively low temperature, while those gases entrapped during pressing cannot escape until their pressure is increased sufficiently through increasing temperature to expand the interpartjcle openings. The remaining adsorbed gases, gaseous reduction products, and dissolved gases produce a similar effect at the higher temperatures. If, in the sintering process, gas evolution occurs after the interpore channels have been sealed, an exaggerated expansion of the void spaces results. This is particularly true if the temperature is high enough for extensive plastic flow. In his fabrication of powder bars from tantalum, Balke7 had to consider the effect of adsorbed hydrogen and provide for its escape during sintering by limiting the compacting pressure to a maximum of 50 tons per sq in. The effect of gases entrapped during pressing was first noted by Trzebiatowski8 when he found that gold and silver powders decrease in density with increasing sintering temperature if pressed at 200 tsi, while they exhibit the usual increase when pressed at 40 tsi. Recent investigators9-11 have also noted that entrapped gases have an effect on the expansion of copper compacts during sintering. Proper provision for the escape of gaseous products of reduction must be made in order to avoid deleterious effects. Myers" states that in the sintering of electrolytic tantalum powder, the temperature was gradually raised to 2600°F with a pause at 2000°F to permit reduction of the oxides. Experimental Details For the present study, 50 pct Co-50 pct Fe compacts in the form of circular disks 1½ in. in diam and 0.15 in. thick were fabricated by the pressing and sintering of a mixture of the elemental powders. It was decided to follow the sintering process by means of liquid permeability measurements, because it was thought that such measurements might serve as a measure of relative pore sizes, as well as a possible indication of the point at which most of the interpore channels become sealed. However, since the permeability as measured by the flow of a liquid, such as ethylene glycol, does not give an absolute indication of the point where the pores have become isolated, a method for determining the percentage of pores connected to the surface was set up. As an additional cross check on the permeability measurements, metallographic methods were used to study the relative pore size. Finally, the property of ultimate interest, the density, was measured. Raw Materials: The powders used consisted of an annealed, 99.9 pct pure, —150 mesh grade of electrolytic iron powder, and a 98 pct pure, —200 mesh grade of reduced and comminuted cobalt powder. The cobalt powder was not further processed either by hydrogen reduction or annealing. The screen analyses for the iron and cobalt powders are given in Table I, while the chemical analyses for each type of powder are listed in Table 11. Table 111 gives the hydrogen loss measurements for the powders according to the M.P.A. Standard Method and for a higher temperature as well. Preparation of Compacts: Equal amounts of the elemental powders were mixed by rotation for 1 hr and then pressed into compacts approximately 0.15

The commercially exploited sedimentary apatites exhibit a number of variable lattice substitutions which affect their chemical composition. Carbonate is a major diluent of phosphorus values in sedimentary apatites. Substantial amounts of water as hydroxyl, hydronium, and tetrahedral hydroxyl ions substitute for fluorine and oxygen, calcium, and phosphate, respectively. Calcium is also replaced by several other divalent and monovalent cations. The structural formula demonstrates the substitutions in the lattice of the sedimentary apatites studied in view of the crystal-chemical relationships which have been postulated for the isomorphous apatite series. The lattice constant a. varies from 9.29 to 9.40 A for the apatites studied. Quantitative relationships between this constant and lattice substitution are complicated by the interaction of multiple substitutions whose influence is non-additive. The mineral apatite, the principal raw material source of phosphorus for agricultural and industrial applications, offers a wide area for investigation. Considerable research effort has been expended in the study of apatite crystal-chemistry by medical, biological, and earth scientists. Few of these studies deal directly with the sedimentary apatites from the major occurrences which are widely exploited for commercial uses. It is the purpose here to present chemical analyses of several sedimentary apatites and discuss their chemical composition in relation to the structural and crystalchemical principles which have been postulated for the apatite isomorphous series. THE STRUCTURE OF FLUORAPATITE The atomic structure of fluorapatite was described, independently, by Ngray-Szabd and Mehmel in 1930 and has been accepted as presented, with only minor changes,4 since that time. The hexaogonal unit cell with dimensions of a = 9.37 0.01 A and c = 6.88 0.01 A contains two molecules of the composition "There are six (PO4) groups in the cell, four calcium ions on the trigonal axes, surrounded prismati-cally by six oxygen ions and six calcium ions surrounded by an irregular polyhedron of a fluorine and five oxygens. Fluorines are at the comers of the reflexion planes, touching three calcium ions each".l7

The oxidation of uranium carbide by oxygen at various pressures, and by air, has been investigated at temperatures up to 600°C. Arc-melted and cast uranium carbide displays oxidation behavior that appears to be dependent on its treatment after melting. ccReactive" uranium carbide, which results from exposure of freshly melted material to laboratory air, ignites in oxygen at about 275° to 350°C depending on pressure, and in air at about 350°C. The product of the initial oxidation appears to be UO2+.. Continued heating produces U30,. The initial oxidation rate is poportional, roughly, to the square root of the oxygen pressure. The activation energy determined for the initial oxidation reaction is 7.1 kcal, from 400° to 600°C in 10 mm of oxygen. AN investigation of low-decontamination methods for reprocessing uranium carbide reactor fuels is being carried out at Atomics International. One of the reprocessing cycles includes oxidation of the fuel at relatively low temperature (300° to 500°C) and reaction of the product oxide with carbon at elevated temperatures (above 1500°C) to produce uranium carbide. A number of small-scale experiments have been carried out in which uranium carbide was oxidized in air and oxygen at various pressures to measure reaction rates and to obtain other information concerning the oxidation process. In initial experiments with arc-melted UC, ignition was observed at about 275°C in oxygen or 350°C in air. However, similar experiments by Neymark' at 426°C in air showed no ignition. It was soon determined that the difference in oxidation behavior was due to the treatment of the UC following arc-melting. At the United Verde mine the 9-2D stope on the 4050 ft level is located within the north sulphide mass lying some 800 ft north of the main sulphide ore body. In 1948 it was estimated that this block contained 85,000 tons of ore at 4% copper and 9.2% zinc. The north ore body is a lenticular replacement deposit in the black schist, extending from about 100 ft above the 3750 level to a distance below the 4500 level yet to be determined. Although the mineralized zone approaches 1000 ft in length, only 300 ft is of economic importance. In width it varies from a maximum of 60 ft to about 3 ft at the north end, and is characterized by pinching and swelling in the ore zone. One of these larger swells is being mined as the 9-2D stope. Mining costs at greater depth, together with the expected grade of ore after dilution, necessitated a low cost mining method to permit profitable stoping operations. Based on the results obtained in a number of Canadian mines, it was decided to develop the ore body for stoping by the Aldermac or bench method of diamond drill blastholes; however, this plan was subsequently changed and the radial or ring method adopted. Such a method seemed to offer the advantage of large tonnages at low cost, and obviate the necessity of waste fill. This latter point was of particular importance, since the present waste system does not extend below the 3000 level.

THE purpose of this investigation was to determine the equilibrium diagram of the lithium-magnesium pair as a first step in studying the possible usefulness of these alloys as ultra-light structural materials. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE The behavior of lithium towards magnesium was first investigated by Masing and Tammann.(I)? In order to prevent oxidation the alloys were made in iron tubes under an atmosphere of hydrogen; temperatures were measured with a glass-protected thermocouple. These investigators found that lithium and magnesium form two series of solid solutions separated by a miscibility gap between 85 and 95 per cent magnesium; that the alloys with 81 and 95 per cent magnesium showed a homogeneous structure under microscopic examination, while the alloy with 89 per cent magnesium contained two distinguishable crystallites; that the curve indicating the beginning of crystallization rises from the melting point of lithium to that of magnesium; and that no compounds of lithium and magnesium are formed. The equilibrium diagram was not plotted because no definite data were obtained for determining the solidus and the posi-tion of the miscibility gap in the solid state. The difficulties encountered in this investigation were: (1) that it was necessary to heat them as high as the melting point of magnesium in order to obtain homogeneous melts; at such temperatures the alloys attacked the glass protecting the thermo-couple; and (2) that at temperatures above 400° C. the lithium united
