Membership.-For the second year in Succession membership reached a new high level for all time, as indicated in the accompanying tabulation in which "Members" includes all categories except Student Associates. The smaller net gain is accounted for in three ways: (1) A greater lag in enrollment of those elected in the last quarter of the year; (2) an increase in the number of applications involving change of status from Junior Member to Member; and (3) an increase of 167 in the loss by death by resignation and by suspension in 1939 as compared with 1938. Experience shows that at the end of a year of less prosperous conditions in the mineral industries, and, therefore, among engineers engaged in these industries, resignations and suspensions are more numerous. Business and industrial indexes all show 1938 to have been somewhat less prosperous than 1937; but the improvement in 1939 should be reflected in the record for 1940.

It formulates for students the system of logic and reasoning that is the mark of the practicing engineer. The three chapters are, "The Method of Engineering", "Application of the Engineering Method" and "Uncertainties in Engineering." They cover logic and reasoning, terms, nontechnical problems, practical conditions controlling the engineering method, inescapable uncertainties and the method of coping with them. The author is emeritus professor of civil engineering at Stanford. The material presented here formed chapters 9, 10, and 11 of The Engineering Profession, by Hoover and Fish, second edition 1950. Elements of Ore Dressing. By Arthur F. Taggart. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York, 1950. $10.- A modern and practical introduction to the subject by the noted author of the Handbook of Mineral Dressing. The philosophy that a mill and all its parts comprise a single treatment process is a continuing theme in the book. Professor Taggart covers hand picking, screening, filtration, and electrical concentration. After introducing sedimentation, he takes up acceleration in free-settling, hindered-settling, sink-float, jigging, film and trough concentrators and shaking concentrators. A discussion of organic chemicals in flotation is followed by a detailed treatment of flotation. Final chapters deal with primary crushing, secondary crushing, grinding, transport, and controls and flowsheets.

The permeability of hydrogen through the a phase of palladium has been measured by a low pressure permeation technique under conditions such that bulk diffusion was the rate-controlling process. The observed permeability is described by the equation: J = 1.80 x 1O-3 P½exp(-3745)/RT) cc(stp)/sec/cm2/en over a range of hydrogen pressure, P, from 2.9 x 10-5 m Hg to 5.0 x 10-3 cm Hg, and over a temperature range, T, from 300" to 709°K. The fact that the permeability shows a square root dependence on pressure and a reciprocal dependence on thickness was taken as evidence that bulk diffusion, rather than surface reactions, was the rate-controlling process. The permeability data were used in conjunction with the solubility data of Salmon et al., to determine the diffusivity of hydrogen through palludium as: D = 4.94 x 10-3 exp(-5745/RT) cm2/sec There was no influence of sub structural defects observed over the temperature range employed. From the permeability data obtained, coupled with grain size measurements, it was concluded that the ratio of grain boundary diffusivity to bulk diffusivity was less than 105 over the range of temperature investigated. THE diffusive mass transport of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium has been studied previously by numerous investigators.' In spite of the large amount of attention this system has received, there is not good agreement between the results obtained in different investigations.' This is due in part to the fact that the mass transport was surface-limited during some of these studies, rather than being diffusion-controlled3-5 The reason for the disagreement in other cases is not clear. These studies made use of such techniques as rate of absorption from solutions6 and gases,' electrochemical potential,8 time lag,' and permeation10,11 to determine the mass transport behavior. Of these, the gas permeability technique is the only method which allows an easy test to determine if diffusion is the rate-controlling mechanism, thus eliminating the uncertainty regarding the limiting transport processes inherent in the other techniques. The two most recent permeability studies are those of Toda10 and Davis." Toda determined the permeability of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium over the temperature range from 170" to 290°C, and over the pressure range from 36 to 630 mm Hg utilizing a steady-state gas-permeability technique. Toda's result was: J = 1.41 x 10-3 P½ exp(-3220/RT) where J = specific permeability in cc(stp)/sec/cm2/cm, P½ = square root of the inlet pressure in (cm Hg)½, R = Universal gas constant, and T = temperature in deg Kelvin. Davis11 also employed a steady-state gas-permeability technique over the temperature range from 200" to 700°C and over the pressure range from 0.02 to 760 mm Hg. His result for the permeability of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium was: J = 3.15 x 10-3 P½ exp(-A440/RT) In the range of overlapping temperature for these two investigations, the values of the specific permeability calculated from the above two equations differ by a factor of about 1.8. In the present investigation, the permeation of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium was determined over a wide temperature range, 27" to 436oC, and over the pressure range from 2.9 x 10-5 to 5.0 x 10-3 cm Hg. This temperature range overlaps that of the previous investigations of Toda and Davis, but also covers the lower temperature range which has never before been investigated. The lower pressure range used here avoided the interaction between the dissolved hydrogen atoms observed at higher hydrogen concentrations.' MATERIALS The as-received palladium specimens were cold rolled from a casting and were supplied as 5.08 cm discs of 0.508 and 0.762 mm thickness. According to J. Bishop and Company specifications, the composition of the discs was 99.95 pct Pd, the balance being Cu, Ag, Au, and Ir. In order to obtain samples of varying grain size, the as-received discs were then heat treated. Sample 1 was treated for eight minutes in a nitrogen atmosphere at 810°C and then air-cooled. Sample D was heated first to 550°C in helium. The helium atmosphere was then immediately replaced by hydrogen and the temperature was slowly raised to 1220°C and held for 22 hr. The sample was then cooled to 550°C where the hydrogen was replaced by helium and the disc was further furnace-cooled to room temperature. Sample H was given the same heat treatment, only with hydrogen substituted for helium below 550°C. The reason that hydrogen was not used throughout the entire annealing cycle for samples D and H was to prevent the distortion encountered by low-temperature cycling in hydrogen observed by Darling." It is seldom the privilege of one who contributes to the Transactions of a technical society, to describe a new industry in which, by processes employed for the first time, are attained results of conspicuous value. There are but few such patches of virgin soil worth the tilling, within the area circumscribed by the industries which have experienced a regular and uniform development. New and startling methods in production are often announced as about to be introduced; but, as a rule, they take their place among the " large desires with most uncertain issues," or give new significance to the historic words of an eminent statesman concerning " the bright beginnings and the bitter end of a halcyon and vociferous proceeding." In this paper I shall have the pleasure of briefly describing a new industry which has been established without announcement or proclamation — the manufacture of serviceable pressure pipes of great strength, from strips of steel or iron wound spirally, heated only along the overlapping edges, welded by hammering and finished into tubes of uniform diameter, and of such length as mag be found convenient in handling and transportation. As such tubes are now manufactured on a considerable scale, in a range of sizes which will soon include everything between 4 inches and 30 inches, and as much larger as may be needed, both process and product are likely to be of interest to engineers in all departments of professional work. The raw material of the industry is the ordinary sheet-iron or steel of commerce, of such lengths and widths as it is convenient to roll. The range of the ganges of the metal which can be employed has riot yet been determined. The lightest metal thus far successfully made into pipe is No. 29 iron, and the heaviest a steel gauging somewhere between 12 and 14. Heavier machines are now building which will bend steel .165 of an inch in thickness, or No. 8 of' the Birmingham gauge. Probably No. 20 or No. 22 will be the lightest used in making commercial pipes; hut the experiment with No. 29 was interesting as showing the readiness with which the flame can be controlled. In the study of the sintering of meta powders, we have come to the conclusion in this laboratory that further progress requires a more basic understanding of the operating mechanisms. This is emphasized in detail by Shaler. He has shown that a knowledge of the exact value of the surface tension is imperative for a solution of the kinetics of sintering. This force plays a principal role in causing the density of compacts to increase.2 Furthermore, a knowledge of the surface tension of solids is also applicable to other aspects of physical metallurgy. C. S. Smith3 points out the relation between surface and interfacial tension and their function in determining the microstructure and resulting properties of polycrystal-line and polyphase alloys. This paper describes one group of results of an experimental program designed for the study of the surface tension in solid metals. As a by-product of this work, considerable information has been obtained on the rate and nature of the flow of a metal at temperatures approaching the melting point and under extremely low stresses, a field of mechanical behavior heretofore scarcely touched by metallurgists. The importance of this additional information to students of powder metallurgy need not be stressed. Theoretical Considerations Interfacial tension arises from the condition that an excess of energy exists at the interface between two phases. Gibbs proves that this energy is a partial function of the interfacial area; thus: ?F/?s = ? where ?F/?s is the rate of change of free energy of the system with changing surface area, at constant temperature, pressure and composition, and ? is the interfacial tension, or interfacial free energy per unit area. If one of the phases is the pure liquid or solid, and the other the vapor of the substance, ? may properly be termed "surface tension," and is a characteristic of the solid or liquid. The attempt of a body to lower its free energy by decreasing its surface gives rise to a force in the surface which is numerically equal in terms of unit length to the free energy per unit area of the surface. Thus ? may be expressed either in erg-cm-² or in dyne-cm-1. Similarly, surface tension may be determined either by a thermo-dynamic measurement of the surface energy or by a mechanical measurement of the surface force. We have chosen the latter approach. Tammann and Boehme4 determined the surface tension of gold by measuring the amount of shrinkage or extension of thin weighted foil at various temperatures and interpolating to zero strain. The method is of questionable accuracy because of the tendency of foil to form minute tears when heated under tension. Their assumption of F = 2W?, where W is the width of the foil, is unsound, as the foil can decrease its surface area by transverse as well as by longitudinal shrinkage. Although their experimentation was meticulous, the paper does not include details of the sample configuration required for recalculating ? on a correct basis, even if such a calculation were possible. In the experimental procedure chosen here, a series of small weights of increasing magnitude are suspended from a series of line copper wires of uniform cross-section. This array is brought to a temperature at which creep is appreciable under extremely small stress. If the weight overbalances the contracting force of surface tension, the wire stretches; otherwise, it shrinks. The magnitude of the strain is determined by the amount of unbalance, so a plot of strain vs. load should cross the zero strain axis at w = F?. If balance is visualized as a thermodynamic equilibrium, the critical load is readily calculated. Eq 7 can be confirmed by means of a stress analysis. During recent years, oil producers have observed with interest the practical success which has attended the application of water as a medium for displacement of oil from its reservoir sands in the Bradford field of northern Pennsylvania and southern New York. Here, according to various authorities, additional recoveries of frorn 2,000 to 12,000 bhl. of oil per acre have heen secured by this method, after ordinary flowing and pumping. rnethods of production had practically reached the lower limit of economic operation. Notwithstanding the success which has attended the practical use of the flooding process in the Bradford field, oil producers in other regions are skeptical of its value when applied under physical conditions differing markedly from those which characterizc the Bradford field. Its usc would probably he construed as illegal in most of the oil-producing states. This general relnctance on the part of oil producers in other regions to accept the flooding process is due in large part to lack of infor-n~ation regarding the factors that influence its operation and efficiency. With the purpose of clarifying to some extent the issues involved, and of determining when the flooding proccess may or may not beeffee-tivcly ernployed, the writers have conducted a serics of laboratory exper-imentments under carefully controlled conditions, designed to indicate, the influence of various physical, chemical arid lithologic factors. These experments have not been conducted under conditions identical with those which exist at depths far below the earth's surface, so that direct quantitative comparisons with field results are not justified, hut it is believed that the experimental results at least warrant qualitative inter-pretations that may he applied to field conditions. The methods employed in the conduct of these experiments are briefly explained, and the results, together with the conclusions based thereon, arc presented. To better understand the Co-Mo interaction in maraging steels, the precipitate reversion behavior of two alloys closely related to the 18 Ni-250 grade has been studied. The reversion experiment is carried out by aging at a low temperature, T1 (preaging temperature), for some period of time and then aging at a higher temperature, T2, called the reversion tetnperature. Aging and reversion tmzperatures used were in the range 679 to 1050°F. Reversion is marked by an increase in resistivity and a decrease in hardness. It teas found that some reversion took place at all cornbinations of T1 and T2 but that pronounced rei3ersion resulfed for an Fe-18 pct Ni-5 pct Mo-8 pcl Co alloy exposed to preagz'ng' temperatures at or below 850°F. A similar alloy not containing cobalt exhibited no such discontinuity in reversion behazior with TI. The results are interpreted in terms of two types of molybdenum-rich precipitates, one nucleated at dislocations and the other in the matrix. The increased supersaturation resulting from the presence oj- cobalt evidently provides sufficient energy to nucleate the matrix phase. Anotnalies in the temperature dependence of the resistivity decrease and peak hurdness in the Fe-18 pct Ni-5 pct Mo-8 pct Co alloy as a junction of aging temperature noted in an earlier study are explained on this basis. SEVERAL investigatorsl-9 have studied the details of the precipitation-hardening reaction of the maraging steels. The great majority of conclusions have been drawn from transmission electron microscopy. Although much has been learned by this method, alternate techniques which will give information earlier in the aging process are needed for a more complete understanding of the series of precipitation steps probably involved in the aging reaction. Peters and cupp'' have recently shown, by measurements of the kinetics of precipitation, that an 18 pct Ni-Co-Mo maraging steel shows a distinct change in precipitation behavior at aging temperatures below 850°F. The results were interpreted in terms of the existence of two types of precipitates at low aging temperatures. Only one precipitate type is present at higher aging temperatures. The low-temperature precipitate was found to be a particularly effective strengthener. No evidence for the additional low-temperature precipitate was found in the 18 pct Ni-5 pct Mo ternary alloy. The object of this investigation was to study further the characteristics of the two types of precipitates and the interaction between cobalt and molybdenum characterizing this system. Some preliminary experiments indicated a difference in reversion behavior in specimens aged above and below 850°F. This suggested that knowledge of the reversion behavior might shed some light on these two questions. Hardy and Heal11 have defined reversion as the loss of hardness, electrical conductivity, or other properties caused by heating for a very short time at temperatures above the aging temperature. The precipitate reversion referred to in this paper is entirely distinct from "austenite reversion" often referred to in maraging steel literature. This latter phenomenon could more accurately be called the diffusion-controlled formation of austenite. Much has been written about reversion in several of the aluminum-base binary and ternary alloys.'2-16 Two explanations for reversion have been advanced. Based on the classical nucleation theory of Volmer-Weber-Becker-Doring,17 Konobeevski18 suggested that reversion was due to the size of the precipitate particles

The zone-melting technique can be adapted for the de-termination of the eutectic composition in complex metal systerrzs. The application of this method is demonstrated in a simple eutectic system, Mg-AE, in which the eutectic composition is known and in a complex ternary system, Mg-Al-Zn, in which the literature is uncertain as to the composition of the ternary eutectic. The advantages and limitations of this unique approach for the determirution of the eutectic composition are discussed. ThE eutectic composition in phase diagrams is usually determined by thermal analysis of a series of arbitarily selected alloy compositions. The temperatures of the liquidus and eutectic arrests for each alloy are plotted and the eutectic composition is estimated by extrapolation to the entectic temperature of the curve formed by the liquidus arrest temperatures for the series of alloys. Although this approach readily yields the eutectic temperatures, several dekrminations are needed to estimate the eutectic composition, even in a simple system. In a complex ternary system, a great many determinations are often necessary to estimate, even approximately, the ternary eutectic composition. Thus, the conventional method is inherently tedious and time consuming. The application of zone melting provides a relatively efficient method of determining the eutectic composition.' As an illustration, consider the zone melting of an alloy composition C, in the simple eutectic system A-B, shown in Fig. 1, under the ideal conditions of infinitely rapid diffusion in the liquid, no diffusion in the solid, and ease of nucleation of both phases. As the zone moves along the bar, the composition of the zone is enriched by solute rejected during the freezing of the a phase and the zone composition approaches the eutectic composition CE.Once the zone composition attains the lowest melting composition, i.e., the eutectic composition, it remains at this composition as the zone moves along the bar and finally freezes as such at the end of the bar. Chemical analysis of the end of such a zone-melted bar then should yield the eutectic composition CE of the system A-B. A corresponding analysis can be made for a ternary eutectic system. Under the ideal conditions noted above, only one pass of the molten zone is required to yield the eutectic composition. Experimentally, however, a solute-rich layer forms at the solid-liquid interface2 and the composition of the zone does not attain the eutectic composition as rapidly or as uniformly as in the ideal case outlined above. But with agitation of the melt, the ideal conditions can be approximated experimentally. Also, as shown below, zone melting permits a cumulative build-up of the solute at the end of the bar to the eutectic composition. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate this unique method for determining the eutectic composition. The method is here applied to two systems: first, to the binary Mg-A1 system, in which the composition is well established, and second, to the complex Mg-Al-Zn system in which there is doubt concerning the composition of the ternary eutectic. THE patent literature of alloys for the last two decades or so indicates that the number of liatents referring to smaller and smaller percentages of essential alloying constituents is on the increase, whereas the number of patents relating to considerable percentages of alloying additions becomes smaller. The claims regarding physical properties indicate consistently higher and more rigid values and show the possibility of modifying the physical properties by only slight changes in the percentage of minor constituents or by applying different methods - of treatment. Alloys of the same base have been made suitable for a number of different applications by intelligently and rigid- ly controlling their composition, melting, casting, working, and heat-treatments. Other trends indicated in the development of modern alloys are higher corrosion resistance, higher fatigue limits, and "stability" in volume.

During the initial nine-year deple-tion of the McKamie-Patton pool gas-condensate reservoir, the pressure behavior and fluid analyses indicated pressure maintenance by gas injection would be attractive relative to continued pressure depletion. As a result, a gas cycling program was inaugurated in Aug., 1949, which has since maintained reservoir pressure. In order to evaluate the benefits of this program, the recoveries for natural depletion and for cycling followed by blowdown were determined by calculating the fractional balance of the molar quantities of vapor and liquid remaining in the reservoir and produced at the surface for various stages of depletion. The results of the investigation show theoretical ultimate recovery due to the cycling program will be 42 per cent greater than would be realized under pressure depletion type operation. INTRODUCTION The benefits of gas injection pressure maintenance programs in condensate reservoirs have been recognized and qualitatively described in several papers1-8 during the past 15 years. Some of these papers also describe methods for calculating the increased recovery realized from cycling; however, as a rule, hypothetical reservoirs were used as examples".'.. This paper presents an evaluation of the pressure maintenance program for the McKamie-Patton condensate reservoir and includes a description of the fractional balance method employed to determine the benefits. Reservoir Development and Characteristics The McKamie-Patton pool, Lafayette County, Ark., was opened in June, 1940, with production obtained from the oolitic Smackover lime at a depth of approximately 9,300 ft. The structure is an anticline 8 miles long by 1 to 2 miles wide, and is one of many productive Smackover structures in Southern Arkansas. Of predominant importance is the condensate-bearing gas cap portion of the reservoir, which covers approximately 4,000 acres, attains a maximum thickness of some 200 ft, and has an average thickness of 90 ft. Development of the cap was accomplished with 21 wells drilled on 160 acre spacing. An isopach map of the cap is shown in Fig. 1. In addition, an oil rim is present along most of the periphery of the pool. Production practice includes field separation of black oil, and a high pressure gathering system which carries total well stream from gas cap wells to a plant where condensate is separated and the gas is processed for recovery of natural gasoline, butane, and propane. Since the gas contains appreciable hydrogen sulfide, it is removed by amine contact, after which free sulfur is produced by the Claus process. Core analyses from 1,767 gas cap formation samples averaged 14.2 per cent porosity and 379 md dry air permeability. Connate water was restored on seven samples of gas cap rock by air-brine capillary techniques, from which the interpreted water saturation averaged 28.17 per cent. During the early life of the field, it was believed the recovery mechanism, based on several of the other regional Smackover reservoirs, might be a natural water drive. However, subsequent production and pressure history revealed that the gas cap would not be produced by water drive, but would behave as a closed reservoir. As part of a program to establish the effect of crystal imperfections on laser output, a detailed study was made of the dislocation structure of ruby crystals obtained from varioius sources. Using KHSO4 as an etchant, a detailed mapping of the dislocation structure on the (0001) and the (1150) planes was carried out. A less extensive study was made of the rhombohedral planes. The average dislocation density on the basal plane was 1.5 to 3 x 106 cm&apos;2 and on the (1120) planes -5 x 10&apos; cm-2. Howe7!er, considerable variation existed between areas on a given plane. The subboundaries in the basal plane tended to lie along [1100] type directions while those on the (1120) plane tended to lie: a) parallel to the basal plane, b) along truces of the (1101) plane, and c) along normals to the traces of the (0001) planes. The orientations suggest that mang of the dislocations lie on the (0001), (1701), and (1150) planes A Laue back-rellection nnalysis Of c-axis wander in one crystal revealed a gradual increase in misorientation from me end of the crystal to the other, with a maximum variation of 1°35&apos;. Slight etching of a mechanically polished crystal revealed mumerous polishing scratches, suggesting the existence of a plastic flow layer. It is recognized that chromium concentration, lineage, and other crystalline imperfections play a role in the efficiency of ruby lasers.&apos; Consequently, it is desirable to establish in detail the imperfection structure of ruby crystals to be used as lasers. Some exploratory work along this line had already been done by Barnes&apos; and Dils and Martin.&apos;" How- referred to as the morphological system, as described by Kronberg.4 The Miller indices given in the present paper will be based on this morphological system. In this system, the three common growth planes are the (0001), the {1120}, and the {1101}.5 Since these planes are of high stability, it is expected that they are most suitable for study by the etch-pit technique. In the present investigation, a detailed mapping of the dislocation structure was carried out for the (0001) and the (1130) planes. A less extensive study was made of the etch-pit structure on rhombohedra1 planes. An analysis of dislocations in sapphire (the ruby host) was first made by kronberg,4 who postulated that slip on the (0001) plane occurred by motion of dislocations with Burgers vector 1/3 <1150> and that these dislocations might dissociate into quarter partials. An etch-pit technique using boiling phosphoric acid was developed by Scheuplein and Gibbs6, 7 for identifying dislocations intersecting the (0001) planes and the planes near (2021) in sapphire. Al-ford and Stephens8 were able to reveal dislocations on the (0001) and {1120} planes in sapphire and ruby by etching in fused potassium bisulfate (KHS04) at 675°C. The termini of basal dislocations [(000l), <1120>] were revealed by Palmour and Kriegel9 on {1120} and {1010} by thermally etching sapphire. Bond and Harvey10 were able to decorate dislocations in sapphire by adding 1 pet by weight of ZrO2 to the Al2O3 powder used in the growth of the crystals by the Verneuil technique and then heating the grown crystals for 4 hr at 1500°C. They found, using optical transmission microscopy, that many dislocations had straight segments which were parallel to one of the six [1120] directions in the basal plane. Single dislocation lines curved smoothly from one alignment to the other, turning through angles of 60 to 120 deg. Also observed were isolated hexagonal loops, approximately 10 µ in diameter, the sides of which lay along the same directions as did the longer dislocations. MATERIAL AND ETCHING PROCEDURE The ruby specimens used in this study (all containing approximately 0.04 pet Cr) had been obtained from four different sources: Linde Co., Meller Co., Valpey Crystal Corp., and those grown at Aerospace Corp.* For the initial phase of this study, several specimens were cut from the slab shown schematically in Fig. 1 which had previously been cut from a disk boule obtained from the Linde

This paper reports the distribution of sulphur between iron and titanium in Fe-Ti-S alloys and in Fe-Ti-C-S alloys. The compound TiS was found, which exists as a separate phase at temperatures below 1200°C. Titanium in steels reacts with sulphur in preference to carbon. THE general relationship between sulphides and oxides suggests that titanium should form a sulphide having properties similar to those of titanium oxide. Specifically, titanium should form a sulphide having a high melting point, indicating a stable compound of low solubility in iron. In order for titanium to function as a desulphurizer or sulphur-fixing agent, it must form a stable sulphide. In order for titanium to be useful in steels as a sulphur-fixing agent, it must react with sulphur in preference to carbon; and to prevent red shortness, the sulphide formed must have solubility characteristics such that grain-boundary precipitation of a low melting phase be prevented. The terms desulphurizer and sulphur-fixing agent when used in this paper mean that titanium effectively ties up the sulphur as a stable sulphide of titanium and prevents the formation of FeS. The partition of sulphur between iron and titanium was studied first in a series of Fe-Ti-S alloys with carbon absent, and then in similar alloys with carbon present. It has been established1 a that titanium forms in Fe-Ti-S alloys a sulphide of undetermined composition which can be identified microscopically, and that the titanium-sulphur compound does not respond to sulphur printing. It has been suggested" that titanium acts as a sulphur-fixing agent, although little proof has been given. A report% f The Advisory Committee on Metals and Minerals summarizes the existing knowledge concerning substitutes for manganese in steels. Distribution of Sulphur Between lron and Titanium with Carbon Absent The alloys for this investigation were made by -melting Armco iron, metallic titanium, and iron sulphide in alundum crucibles in an induction furnace. The titanium was added after the other ingredients had melted. In these alloys it is recognized that some TiO, is present, since the melts were made in the air and since no other deoxidizing agent was used; therefore, some of the titanium was not available for union with sulphur. Thirteen ingots were made. Ingots 2 to 8 were cast in baked-sand molds; ingots 12 and 13 were cast in metal molds; and ingot 9 was allowed to cool in the crucible in which it was melted. All ingots were annealed at 900°C for 3 hr and were cooled slowly in the furnace. Subsequent information indicates that this anneal had no effect upon the titanium sulphide particle size, since the sulphide does not go into solution at this temperature. The ingots as-cast were approximately 8 in. long and % in. diam. The compositions of the eight ingots and the results of the partition of sulphur are recorded in Table I. Total titanium and total sulphur were determined by standard gravimetric methods. Sulphur, as iron sulphide, was determined by the evolution method. Boiling HC1 (1:4) liberates the sulphur from iron sulphide, but leaves the titanium sulphide practically undecomposed. A complete separation of titanium sulphide and iron sulphide cannot be made by digesting these compounds in dilute HC1 since titanium sulphide was found to dissolve slowly. The amount of titanium sulphide decomposed will depend upon the time in contact with the acid and upon the particle size of the sulphide. The point

While the qualities desirablc in iron have been known for some time, the qualities in coke that produce such iron have not been established. There are no objective standards for blast-furnace coke, which is usually described in general terms, as good or bad. Many experienced operators believe that coke cannot be measured objectively except by using it in the furnace, noting the result, and labeling the coke according to furnace operations. This is admittedly unscientific, and besides is useless for the two main purposes for which a measure of coke quality is needed: (I) to produce the best possible coke from the coals and equipment on hand; (2) to test new coals and determine their value for blast-furnace coke. In seeking such an objective measure, much work has been done on tumbler tests, shatter tests, sizes of coke, porosity, specific gravity, reactivity or combustibility and other tests, but as yet very little has been published in which conclusive correlations have been established between such objective measures and furnace operation. In our study of the problem during the past 8 years we have developed no new measures of coke quality, but we have collected data that are presented here in the hope that they may assist in further work, so that at some future time there may be developed such positive measures. The purpose of this paper is to show that there are variations in coke and that such variations do influence the operation of blast furnaces. At the same time we must remember that there are variations in blastfurnace operation and it may be the blast furnace that is at fault. This correlation of coke properties with blast-furnace operation will be worked out in the following steps: . Discussion of a period when a change in the coke resulted in an increase in efficiency on one furnace and a decrease in efficiency on another. 2. Adaptation of the inefficient furnace to the available coke so that normal efficiency was restored. 3. The use of radial distribution: a discussion of the effect of size of ore layer in adapting blast-furnace operation to the coke. 4. An example of a change in size of coke and the detrimental influence on the pro duction of one furnace. 5. An example of a change in size of coke, together with manufacturing data, to show why it changed, the conclusion being that coke is a product with an optimum value. 6. The recently established SME-AIME Education Board has completed its first full year of operation, and its six constituent committees-Accreditation, Career Guidance, Continuing Education, Educational Statistics, and Scholarship-have been extremely active in identifying and initiating programs to serve the educational needs of the Society of Mining Engineers and its members. The Continuing Education Committee-primarily concerned with the needs and problems associated with providing a continuing education program for SME members-is responsible for: (1) determining the need for short course offerings; (2) developing needed courses, along with new means and opportunities of presentation; and (3) scheduling and evaluating course presentation. In response to this charge, the committee has sponsored two short courses at the SME-AIME Fall Meeting in St. Louis and three short courses at the AIME Annual Meeting in Denver. Its major effort, however, has been directed toward the 1978 SME-AIME Fall Meeting to be held in Orlando, Fla., where 18 days of short-course instruction have been scheduled. A portion of these courses will be presented prior to the meeting, with the remainder to be presented in Nassau, Bahamas, immediately following the meeting.

I. The Mines THE first discovery of zinc on the property now worked by this company was made by the celebrated mineralogist, Prof. William Theodore Röpper, in 1845. Different claimants kept the property in continual litigation till 1861, when everything was satisfactorily settled by the purchase of the land by the company, who have worked it ever since. The mines are situated in a valley, four miles south of Bethlehem, Pa., in Lehigh County. The valley is from two to three miles broad, and is bounded on the north and south by syenitic hills. Syenite underlies the valley, and upon this is deposited the Potsdam sandstone, then a layer of slate, and, finally, a dolomitic limestone, belonging to the Chazy or Black River formation, in which the zinc deposits are inclosed. The rocks occur in folds, and have evidently been subjected to tremendous pressure from below, the zinc deposit being found in an anticlinal axis, in nearly vertical veins. Mixtures of fine GaSb and Gds as well as preal-loyed GaSbl,As, powders were hot-pressed at 690°C and 25,000 psi. Dense alloys with compositional gradients of less than 5 pct were obtained from mixtures containing about 20 mol pct GaAs. For x < 0.2, there were increasing compositional gradients, and for x > 0.2 a GaAs-rich second phase appeared in the microstructure. Densification as well as alloying wlechanisms were enhanced by dissociation and, possibly, oxidation reactions of the powders. Densification of coarse prealloyed material, however, primarily depended on plastic flow phenomena and required temperatures just below solidus and pressures of 50,000 psi Thermal and electrical properties were measured. Although in no case was the figure of merit of melt growth materials approached closer than to within 25 pct, the better overall thermoelectric properties were found in coarse-grained, prealloyed materzals which had been compacted to near theoretical density and where grain regrowth had been induced. Similar results are believed to hold in other binary 111-V compound systems if processed under similar conditions. The densification of unalloyed GaSb powders during pressure sintering (= hot pressing) was shown to depend strongly on powder particle size.&apos; Fine powders displayed a "liquid skin effect" that enhanced compaction through the presence of liquid gallium, whereas coarse powders compacted predominantly by plastic flow. The liquid skin effect, in particular, appeared attractive for alloying GaSb with other, higher-melting, III-V compounds, and to densify these in a one-step operation. This is of special interest in the case of III-V compound alloys as the conventional techniques of melt growth or long-time annealing of powders2 is very time-consuming, especially in cases where a large separation of liquidus and solidus can be expected, such as in GaSbl alloys.2 It was felt that experimentation with this system, a particularly unfavorable example, would allow us to extrapolate to several other, more favorable, cases. Uses of Ill-V alloys are most evident in thermoelectric energy conversion devices.&apos; For this reason certain thermal and electrical properties were measured and compared to those of melt-grown material and to hot-pressed prealloyed powders. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The pressure-sintering apparatus has been previously described.&apos; Using this equipment, both powder mixtures of GaSb with GaAs and prealloyed GaSbl-,As, powders were hot-pressed. The mixtures were pre- pared from cast GaSb and melt-grown GaAs. The prealloyed material was obtained from stoichiometric melts, initially heated to 1200°C in an evacuated quartz ampoule, and then annealed in the solidus-liquidus interval. A typical annealing cycle consisted of a heating to 850°C (1 hr), extended successive annealing at 750°C (65 hr), and slow stepwise cooling (25 hr) to below solidus. The GaSb, GaAs, and GaSbl-,As, materials were ground in a vibrational mill to particle sizes below 500 . A jet mill reduced these further where necessary. Fine powders were analyzed by Coulter counting for their size distribution. Average sizes by volume were calculated from the data. Mixing of the powders, where necessary, was carried out through rapid vibrational motion. The hot-pressing operation consisted of a degassing period of 15 hr, in most cases at 690°C, followed by several hours of compression, normally 25,000 psi at 690°C for powder mixtures and 50,000 psi at 710°C for prealloyed powders. The chemical compositions were confirmed by X-ray fluorescence analysis. To estimate the degree of solid solution achieved, lattice parameters were determined and interpreted according to Vegard&apos;s rule. In addition, optical microscopy helped to correlate the relative amounts of the phases present as well as the degree of porosity to the measured density. To reveal grain boundaries, polished surfaces were etched4 with H 2 O:H 2 O:HCl = 2:l:l. In several cases microscopic concentration gradients were monitored by electron-probe analysis-. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Alloying and Densification of GaSn-GaAs Powder Mixtures. After preliminary experiments showed that no appreciable alloying took place in mixtures of coarse GaSb (22.5 p) and fine GaAs (2.5 p) powders, hot pressing of mixtures was confined to fine powders only (3.1 and 2.4 p, respectively). Alloying and densification apparently occurred simultaneously with a grain regrowth mechanism which depended on the presence of a liquid phase.&apos; The liquid phase was provided by the dissociation of GasbS particles into liquid gallium and antimony above 555°C. This not only enhanced grain regrowth and densification, as in unalloyed GaSb,&apos; but took on additional importance here for the alloying process. Alloying was speeded up by the resulting liquid-solid interaction as compared to the very slow solid-state diffusion process normally expected at these temperatures.&apos; The results obtained with a series of powder mixtures have been compiled in Table I. It is seen that for mixtures with less than 20 mol pct GaAs, x < 0.2, the compositional ranges increased and for x > 0.2 a GaAs-rich phase and free antimony appeared in the microstructure in sizable amounts.

Notwithstanding the growing importance of this subject, no work specially devoted to it has hitherto been published. Having had to inspect during the last twenty years nearly a million tons of iron and steel rails for various countries, I have obtained experience of what rail manufacturers can practically execute, as well as of what railway engineers practically require. Bearing these two points in mind, I have from time to time published observations with a view to unite both interests,—that of the producer and that of the consumer,—and to reduce the specifications and the forms of sections to standards, or types, in order to facilitate the execution of the works and to improve the construction of permanent way. The Swedish government railways, as well as private companies owning railways in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark,.have during the time above mentioned consulted with me and intrusted to me their rail inspection. I therefore owe to these countries much of the opportunity which I have enjoyed of gaining experience and position. Next to Sweden, America is the country which has most liberally favored me with its confidence in placing these matters in my hands. Through circumstances not under my control there has been little exportation to, and less work done by Europe for, America during the last six years; but the recent revival of the rail trade has been the more gratifying to mo, seeing that almost all the importers of American rails are still specifying for the Sandberg rail sections and inspection. It is therefore with feelings of gratitude that I now beg to lay before the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and I hope, through that body, before the American railway world, the results of some experience which I have gained in the execution of work for their country, and which therefore belongs rightfully to
