The use of magnetic ore in the blast furnace is a subject of increasing importance. The end of the deposits of lake ore is in sight, although not imminent, and unless some new field is discovered, the use of magnetites will be an increasing factor in the iron production of the country. Enormous deposits of magnetic ore in the country that have been practically untouched contain ore of sufficient richness and purity to prolong materially our ore supply without extensive importation of foreign ores. Magnetic ores can be divided into three general classes: Fine un-sintered, or raw ore; raw lumpy ore; fine ore that has been sintered. IN six years the construction of Hoover Dam and the power plants probably will have reached the operating stage and this vast new source of power will then be continuously available for industry. The height of the darn will be 580 ft. and the average annual flow of the Colorado River is calculated at approximately 24,000 cu.ft. per sec. If this full head and average flow can be maintained the year round, about one million horsepower will be generated. The U. S. Reclamation engineers, taking into consideration the probable range in flow and head, have set the figure for power contracts at 660,000 firm horsepower, which can be assured at all times of the year. During the months of heavy run-off of water from the Colorado River Basin the power plants should be able to generate the full 1,000,000 hp. capacity of the power plants, so there will be 340,000 excess or secondary horsepower. The cost of firm power at the switchboard will be close to 2.15 mills per kw.-hr., equal to $14.05 per hp.-yr., and the cost of the secondary or off-peak power will be close to 0.8 mills per kw.-hr., or $5.22 per hp.-yr. In no place in the country can such cheap power be obtained today. The electrochemical industry is in a state of flux because the power costs from its old sources have increased so much (to $30 per hp.-yr. at Niagara) that the industries have had to seek new sources, so they have gone to Canada and Norway and built new plants.

The Cæur d'Alene silver-lead mining district of northern Idaho is probably best known to the general public as a seat of labor-troubles. So far as the writer is aware, little has been written and little is known about its geology and resources. People interested in lead-smelting are, of course, cognizant of the economic importance of the region, but they have not communicated much of their knowledge to the public. Exact figures as to the total output of the district are not obtainable, but the following estimates, covering the entire output of the 15 years during which the mines have been operated, are believed to be approximately correct: Group of Mines. In 1900 the output of the district was fully $10,000,000, and this figure would have been considerably increased in 1901 had not a curtailment of production been forced by the condition of the lead-market. In 1901 the product was about 150,000 tons of concentrates, with a gross. value of $8,250,000.

Homestake's Bulldog Mountain Operation near Creede, Colorado, in the San Juan Mountains at an elevation of nearly 2,750 m (9,000 ft), is subjected to short summers and long cold winters. Creede’s history dates back to 1889 when silver ore was discovered; and by 1892 production of over a million dollars per month was being shipped from mines located along the Amethyst Fault. The Bulldog Mountain Fault remained relatively untouched by the early prospectors. The United States Geological Survey recognized the potential of this fault in 1960, which led to the staking of many claims over the structure. Homestake leased properties in 1963 and in mid- 1964 a tunnel was started at the 2,956 m (9,700 ft) level with encouraging mineralization being encountered. In 1968 a decision was reached to build a flotation mill of 318 mtpd (350 stpd) capacity. The erection of the mill was completed in early 1969, six years after the first exploration was begun. Since initial start-up, extensive drifting has been done on several separate levels. Two underground hoist installations serve the various levels and many thousand feet of vertical mining operations. Due to the unconsolidated nature of the vein, a new unique underhand cut-and- fill mining method was developed. This procedure is the reverse of the normal cut-and-fill and proceeds from the top down under cemented sand fill, which, while expensive, has greatly reduced s toping hazards. Prior to 1977, a considerable quantity of silver was lost in the slime fraction of the ores processed because of oxidation and other inherent characteristics of individual minerals. Due to Homestakefs favorable experience in treating the slime fraction of the Lead, South Dakota gold ores, experiments with leach methods to recover silver from the slimes by Carbon -In -Pulp offered' the potential for additional silver recovery. Work was begun on the Carbon-In-Pulp plant in April 1976 and completed in December of that year at a cost slightly exceeding $2 million. The C. I. P. plant was designed for 136 mtpd (150 stpd) of current plant slimes plus 227 mtpd (250 stpd) of slimes dredged from the old tailings during the summer season. The sand fraction of the flotation

There is an underlying surge to mining in the Philippines." So said A. R. "Ham" Reed, general manager Itogon-Suyoc Mines, Inc., to this reporter last November. Itogon-Suyoc is a small company with a struggling gold mine, a mixed sulfide mine and some prospects. In the Republic of Philippines (ROP), politics, which have an effect on mining, create some uncertainties. By July 1974, no mining company may have more than 40% foreign ownership. The ownership provision is a matter of concern to such important companies as Atlas and Benguet Consolidated and is generally considered a deterrent to new foreign investment. Under these circumstances, Reed's comments are of interest. On foreign prospectors: Don't come in cold; find a Philippine partner or buy into a company already here. Physical conditions of exploration are tough-terrain, communications -but the mineral potential is excellent.

Although copper production established a new record, lead and zinc registered gains, and iron production held steady, the mixed trend in metallic and nonmetallic mining and generally lower prices in 1961 resulted in a net decline in the total value of domestic mineral production. According to preliminary estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the value of metals produced in this country during the year was approximately $1.9 billion, a decrease of $117 million from 1960; the value of nonmetallics was about $3.7 billion, a $14 million decrease. The following report of mining and mineral developments during 1961 is based on USBM and industry sources. Aluminum Output Dips from 1960 Record Government reports indicate that the domestic primary aluminum industry produced approximately 1,880,000 tons, equivalent to 77% of this nation's capacity. This production is about 6% below the 1960 record output of 2,014,498 tons. Shipments of primary metal ingot slightly exceeded the quantity produced.

The sorption of zinc in a-brass was investigated. By analyzing the elliPtically polarized light reflected from the surfaces of a-brass solid-vapor couples, their optical constants and surface compositions were determined. It was shown that the surface compositions approached an equilibrium value exponentially with time. The bulk diffusion coefficient, surface diffusion coefficient and condensation coefficient for a-brass solid-vapor couples were calculated near 350°C from the experimental results. It has been assumed during various diffusion experiments with bimetallic solid-vapor couples (Dunn,1 Seith and Kraus,2 Jenkins,3 Balluffi and Seigle,4 and others) that the surface composition of such couples reaches its equilibrium value immediately. Although this assumption is probably valid at elevated temperatures, it is certainly not expected to be confirmed at lower temperatures.* consequently, it was decided that a fundamental experiment, designed to solve this problem as well as to examine all aspects of bimetallic sorption, would be the investigation of the rate of approach to equilibrium of the surface composition of solid-vapor couples. The sorption (i.e., adsorption, absorption, and desorption) of metals is obviously dependent on the state of the metallic surface and substrate. Much recent theoretical8"9 and experimental10-12 work on condensation and evaporation of pure metals has shown that the surface contour in atomic dimensions is a critical factor in sorption, so that any deformation or contamination13,14 of the surface exerts a profound influence. It is also known that absorption or diffusion occurs much more rapidly along grain were and in other deformed regions. Thus an effective sorption experiment must utilize a strain-free and clean surface, or at least a clearly defined and reproducible surface state. A mechanically polished surface is in a highly deformed17-l9 state. Because the degree of this deformation is uncertain, it is clear that for most experimental purposes a strain-free (i.e., etched, chemically polished, or electropolished) surface is desirable. Although adsorbed gas molecules on metallic surfaces are unavoidable even in the highest vacuum,20 oxide films can in some cases be removed by suitable vacuum annealing. Electrolytically polished and annealed surfaces, being relatively without strain, smooth and free of bulk oxides, were considered adequate for the present sorption experiments. Measurement of the surface composition of a solid-vapor couple presents a unique problem. Since experiments to determine the approach to equilibrium of the surface composition must be performed at temperatures where diffusion is very slow, solute penetration is so small that conventional analytical methods are unsuitable. An optical reflectivity method utilizing a polarization spectroscope was employed because of the relatively small penetration (~200A) of visible light in metals. By this method, elliptically polarized light reflected from the metal surface was analyzed and compared with that reflected from samples of known composition. CONSIDERABLE work has been done in developing a pyrometer to measure the temperature of molten brasses, bronzes, and aluminum in the crucible. On account of the high melting points and the amount of zinc and sulfurous fumes given off from molten brasses, the conditions are somewhat severe for a thermocouple of standard design; but satisfactory results are obtained with a portable pyrometer, 3 ft. (0.9 m.) of connecting lead wire, and a special 5-ft. nickel-nickel chromium thermocouple, composed of rods ¼ in. (6.35 mm.) in diameter. The lower 12 or 24 in., as desired, may be made detachable so that new tips may be connected at little trouble or expense. The portable instrument need not be of the extreme high-resistance type, as the movable parts of the galvanometer of a lower resistance instrument may be better constructed to withstand the continuous handling such an instrument receives. Platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouples, protected with porcelain and graphite tubes, have been used, but the lag in registering the temperature is too great. It has been found that the range of temperature for various brasses is as follows: Red brasses 2200-2250° F. (1205-1234° C.) Yellow brasses 2250-2400° F. (1234-1318° C.) Bronzes 2300-2550° F. (1260-1400° C.)

Although eight new fields were discovered along the south central fault-line district of Texas during 1938, only one can be considered as of major importance. and as a whole the year was one of no very great development. Several prospects, particularly two, were condemned through drilling, which had been considered important for probable Edwards limestone production. The oil produced was approximately the same as during 1937; namely, about 9 million harrels. This, of course, does not represent potential production but that allowed under proration. The year witnessed the very rapid decline of operations and interest in Austin chalk production. It has been found that only in rare instances mill chalk production pay for itself, because the wells decline extremely rapidly and the recovery per acre, formerly estimated at 2500 bbl., is now considered to he around 1000 barrels. There was an intent interest in the drilling arid producing of edge and abandoned properties in the three Edwards lime producing fields; namely, Luling, Salt Flat and Darst Creek. Many good wells were completed on properties formerly considered below the water level or produced beyond the economic limit The Edwards is penetrated only a few inches and a very small charge of acid is used. Broadly, their field of usefulness is restricted to work in which their long range of action permits them to operate economically, and which other, possibly more conventional, excavating units cannot do. Both of these machines dig or lift material and transport it to a remote dumping point. They combine these two functions in a single machine, nearly always in a single straight-line motion. The purpose of this paper is to examine the important features that distinguish the machines in this group from each other, as well as from other groups. The Machines The "power drag scraper" is a long-range excavating machine that employs a bottomless drag scraper operated back and forth between digging and dumping points by two haulage cables. The typical arrangement is that of Fig. 1. This is the "slusher" of the underground mine, as well as the "dragline scraper" of the sand and gravel industry, and other open-pit mining operations.

The shank, to give good service, should not upset nor should it cause excessive wear on the various parts of the machine. To fulfill these requirements, the steel must have a certain hardness—that is, resistance to deformation. The hardness is expressed in conventional terms, as Brinell or scleroscope number. Before deciding on the hardness that is proper, several factors should be considered; the most important are: type of drill steel used (whether hollow or solid), length of steel, nature of ground, air pressure, and hardness of hammer or anvil block (usually 600 Brinell). These are not all, but they are the most cogent ones. Without doubt, it would be better to use a shank that is too soft than one that is too hard. Most satisfactory service will be obtained from shanks that are just hard enough to resist any tendency to upset. To express the proper hardness in terms of Brinell numbers would mean a great many tests over a long period of time, or a study of drill steels that are being used successfully in the various districts. To obtain some information along this line, the persons making this investigation requested, a number of companies to send to them drill shanks that had been given the usual treatment at that mine. The results of the hardness tests are given in Table 1. The hardness values given in Table 2 are those of shanks known to have been quenched in water and drawn. These results show that where water quenching and drawing are in vogue the hardness is rarely under 400 Brinell.

(New York Meeting, February, 1916) DURING the past year considerable work dealing with the mechanical properties and microstructure following the anneal under uniform conditions of certain types of commercial rolled brass has been done in this laboratory. Since these experiments were conducted with the active cooperation of the Bridgeport Brass Co., involving free use of its product, and have thus furnished information which is characteristic of some of its special mixtures, full publication of the numerical relationships and comparative results encountered does not seem justifiable. Some of the more general features of this work are, however, available and it is our present purpose to use the material in question, along with some results of special tests, in discussing the characteristics of recrystallization as related to the degree of hardening by strain and the ordinary annealing variables. We desire to make acknowledgment of the many courtesies extended by Mr. Charles Ferry, Metallurgist of the Bridgeport Brass Co., and the value of his cooperation, which has greatly stimulated the study of brass in this laboratory. A clear and systematic presentation of the principal relations between temperature and time of anneal, the changing physical properties and microstructure and the degree of previous reduction by cold-rolling, was first made, in the case of rolled brass and copper, by the French engineer, C. Grard,1 in 1909, although much fragmentary information of this general character had appeared earlier and the main facts involved were undoubtedly known to many brass specialists through their own private research. IntRodUction While working with a number of very sticky cracking clays from western Canada the writer became interested in a study of the cause of the excessive plasticity. This led to a review of the rather bulky literature on the subject and the finding that plasticity still remains to be satisfactorily explained. Most of these investigations seem to have been carried on solely from the chemical viewpoint, the geologic aspects having been ignored. In nearly every case, the investigators have worked with the higher-grade clays of low to medium plasticity, such as the kaolins, the excessively plastic ones having generally been neglected, partly because of their limited application, yet the author believes that these are

Discussion of the paper of Archer E. Wheeler and Milo W. Krejci, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1831 to 1880. BRADLEY STOUGHTON, New York, N. Y.:-I would like to ask Mr. Krejci whether they have tried mixing coke dust with the lime in those converters and, if so, if any advantage has been found. It has been a very great advantage in the steel converters where coke dust has been mixed with the lime near the tuyeres. Of course the agent that causes the corrosion at that point is oxide of iron, and coke seems to prevent the formation of the oxide of iron and so protect the tuyeres. It would be interesting to know if it had the same effect in the copper converters. MILO W. KREJCI:-We have never tried it here. At Anaconda the tuyere section was formerly put in by mixing magnesite with tar and ramming that into the tuyere section, but they have abandoned that. Might I ask how you would apply the coke dust? How get it into the tuyere section ? How hold it there ? BRADLEY STOUGHTON :-The coke dust is mixed with silica and clay and then rammed in and burned. I suppose in your converters it would be mixed with the magnetite or magnesite and then agglomerated with the material in place. MILO W. KREJCI:-We never tried it here. PROF. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.:-I would like to ask how thick this deposit of magnetite is on the lining. How thick a layer would be practical ? MILO W. KREJCI:-About 21 in. would be sufficient. I am interested in the mining of magnetite, but was not aware that it had been used at all' by the copper metallurgists.

THE presence of gas in coal mines necessitates the use of costly ventila-tion arrangements and the use of expensive mining methods. On the other hand, the gas itself in many instances is of considerable intrinsic value, and its separate recovery might conceivably be a profitable under-taking. This paper is concerned with a study of the movement of gas in coal strata with the object of determining the laws governing gas move-ment and thus making at least a preliminary step toward the solution of the more practical problem of its control or recovery. Naturally, so important a subject has received much attention from scientists and engineers. In most cases, however, the studies have been concerned with the origin1?, the amount2, the composition3 and the method of retention4 of the gas in coal; or, from the more practical side, have been concerned with the phenomena and conditions associated with outbursts5 or explosions and their control. Numerous studies also have been made of the permeability of coal to gas6, of gas pressures measured in coal seams, etc. The authors are unaware, however, of any attempt to present a consistent or complete picture of the laws governing the movement of gas through the coal.
