Meetings of this committee were held at the Institute headquarters on April 18, May, 3 and 15, and June 19.. At the meeting of June 19, the Secretary reported that letters of invitation to apply for membership in the Institute had been sent to all the alumni of the School of Mines of Columbia University and also to all State Mine Inspectors and their deputies. He also reported the securing of lists of the alumni of the Harvard Engineering Schools, and of the Mining Schools at Houghton, Mich. ; Butte, Mont. ; State College, Pa. ; Seattle, Wash. ; Fayetteville, Ark.; Laramie, Wyo.; Montreal, Canada, and Wor-cester and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institutes. Arrangements were made to invite all these to join the Institute. It was suggested that a. member' of the Institute resident in Australia be appointed to this Committee, also one from Japan. Attention of the members of the Committee was drawn to the fact that letters requesting, others to join the Institute will be written in the offices of the Institute if desired. The history and efficiency of 40-ton capacity dump trucks for surface waste removal at the New Cornelia opencut copper mine, at Ajo, Ariz., are summed up in this paper. Tabulations of truck performance, together with detailed cost figures, prove the value of truck transportation for certain special operations at a large mine. Emphasis is given to the fact that truck transportation not only reduces the haulage costs but also reduces the breaking ground and shovel-loading costs per ton. The New Cornelia opencut copper mine is in the desert. The climate is ideal for seven months of the year, but the five summer months are uncomfortably hot. 'She elevation is 1820 ft. above sea level and the annual rainfall is approximately 6 inches. The ore body is a monzonite-porphyry deposit. The waste-rock capping consists of hard rhyolite, conglomerate and porphyry. All the material is hard and cannot be excavated without blasting. The rhyolite and conglomerate waste is very blocky. The weight of the rock in place is 2.16 tons per cubic yard. The average mine production per day is 22,090 tons of 012 and 18,000 tons Of waste rock, the latter consisting of surface rock and material within the ore body too low in grade to send to the concentrator. The rock is loaded by electric shovels with 4½-cu. yd. dippers. The primary transportation of ore to the concentrator and waste to the dumps is by 30-yd. dump cars and oil-burning steam locomotives; therefore truck haulage of waste is a minor factor of the New Cornelia operation. However, as New Cornelia was one of the first mines to use large-capacity dump trucks for haulage, the results obtained are of interest. Equipment On the south side of the New Cornelia is a hill rising about 500 ft. above the normal surface elevation, roughly 1000 ft. in diameter at its base, called locally Arkansas Mountain peak. Exploratory drilling in this area developed additional ore that could be made accessible for open pit operation only by moving the mountain face a maximum distance of 400 ft. to the south. The slope of the mountain adjacent to the pit averaged 35°, and the small area involved precluded the use of train haulage for the removal of the 4,000,000 tons of waste estimated above the normal pit elevation. A study of dump-truck haulage at Boulder Dam and San Gabriel Dam led to the decision to use large-capacity end-diii~lp trucks rather than smaller trucks, for the following reasons: I. The truck would have to withstand the impact of hard, heavy chunks, some of them weighing as much as 10 tons, which would be dumped from the 4½-cu. yd. dipper. 2. The coarse, rocky, abrasive material would soon damage a light truck body. 3. The body of a small truck could not be efficiently loaded with coarse rock.

Joseph William Richards, was born in Oldbury, Worcestershire, England, on July 28, 1864, of English-Scotch parents, Joseph and Bridget (Harvey) Richards. In 1871, he came to this country with his parents. He attended the public schools of Philadelphia, Pa., where his father was a manufacturing metallurgist, and in 1882, graduated from the Central High School with the degree of A. B. The same year he entered Lehigh University, from which he received the degree of A. C. (Analytical Chemist) in 1886; M. S. in 1891, and Ph. D. in 1893. His connection with the university was continuous from 1887 until his death, and he therefore adds another to the list of names of men Prominent in the A. I. 11. E. who have helped to develop Lehigh University to the important position which it now occupies in mining and metallurgical education in respect of world-wide fame. It is fitting to recall in this connection that, Eckley B. Coxe, a fonnder of the A. I. M. E., four times its vice-president,, and president in 1878-79, was literally a pillar of the university for several years prior to his death; Thomas M. Drown, founder, vice-presi(lent, secretary for 11 years, honorary member, and president in 1897, was president of Lehigh University from 1895 to 1904; and Henry S. Drinker, founder, manager, vice-president, and honorary member, was president of the university from 1905 to 1920. Doctor Richards was no less active in both institutions. With the exception of the years 1886 to 1887, when he was superintendent of the Delaware Metal Refinery of Philadelphia, his professional life was devoted to the upbuilding of the metallurgical department of the university, in part through his continuous services as a member of the teaching staff, and in part through the international renown won for the department by his achievevements as author, investigator, expert and rerognizcd authority in metallurgy, especially the metallurgy of aluminum, metallurgical-chemical calculations, and electrometallurgy. He was assistant instructor in metallurgy and blowpiping in 1887; instructor, 1888-90; instructor in metallurgy, mineralogy and blowpiping, 1890-97; assistant professor, 1897--1903; professor of metallurgy, 1903-1921. He died at his home in Bethlehem, Pa., on Oct. 12, 1921, of heart failure. To the A. I. M. E., for a continuous period of a dozen years, his services were equally loyal and effective. He was vice-president, 1910-11, and 1916-17; councilor, 1912; dirctor, 1913-15; chairman of the Iron and Steel Clommittee, 191-1-21; he was one of the framers of the Insti-

Fifty to 75 million years ago, hydrocarbon-bearing rocks were formed in the Green River formation of Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. The hydro- carbons can be extracted from these rocks, marl- stone but misnamed oil shale, after crushing and intense heating. At about 900°F the marlstone decomposes to produce liquid shale oil. A press release from the Colony Development Co. describes a process which may permit, for the first time, economically feasible access to shale oil. Shale oil has resisted economic extraction for almost three centuries. According to the USBM, a patent was issued as early as 1684 in England to produce "oyle from a kind of stone". France produced oil from marlstone in 1838 and a dozen years later, Scotland started an oil shale industry, producing kerosine, that lasted nearly 100 years. In both countries, the process involved crushing the stone and retorting it to decompose the kerogen-a long and costly process at that time. In 1859, Edwin L. Drake brought in the first oil well in Titusville, Pa., and shale oil faded into oblivion.

The volume fraction of ß phase was determined in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy by measurements of integrated diffraction intensities. The (0002), and (100)ß diffraction lines were chosen because this combination minimizes the errors resulting from preferred orientation. The difficulties arising from fluorescence radiation were eliminated by use of a diffracted beam monochromator. A specimen quenched from 1475OF (800°C) contained approximately 5 pct ß, but in specimens quenched from higher temperatures no ß was found. The ß phase formed during aging, and in specimens solution treated at 1570oF (855oC) approximately 10 pct ß was present after aging at 1000°F (540°C) for 24 hr. This ß appears to form by decomposition of martensitic a'. ThE kinetics of the reactions which occur during the heat treatment of titanium alloys are complex ' and not completely understood. It has been proposed that hardening occurs in some alloys' on aging by the precipitation of a transition phase w followed by the formation of the stable a and ß phases. It has been proposed for other alloys2 that the a' marten-site decomposes by precipitating finely dispersed a particles. Most investigations have been hampered by the difficulties of determining quantitatively the amounts of the various phases present. This paper is concerned with the measurement of the amount of ß phase by an X-ray method, similar to one developed for the determination of retained austenite. The principal new feature was the use of a mono-chromator in the diffracted beam in order to reduce the fluorescence arising from the sample. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments were carried out on an alloy of nominal composition Ti-6Al-4V (actual weight percentages: 6.2 Al, 4.1 V, 0.02 Mn, 0.17 Fe, 0.005 H, 0.03 C, and 0.02 N). The material was received as 5/8-in.-diam centerless ground rods in the annealed condition. The heat treatments were carried out in a vacuum of approximately 0.03µHg. The X-ray intensity measurements were made on 3/8-in. thick discs. The surface was prepared by grinding off about 0.060 in. and electropolishing in a solution af 60 ml (70 to 72 pct) perchloric acid in 1000 ml glacial acetic acid with a current density of 0.5 amp per sq cm.q The X-ray determination is based on the proportionality of the diffracted intensity of each line to the volume fraction of the corresponding phase. In calculating the intensities for a powder sample it is assumed that a large number of grains con- tributes to the diffracted intensity and that the grains are oriented at random. The presence of preferred orientation introduces serious errors in the relative intensities. The material used in this investigation exhibited a strong preferred orientation, which could not be removed by heat treatment. Other investigators have also found that preferred orientation may be retained after phase transformations. Glen and pugh5 performed a detailed analysis of the randomness expected after several allotropic transformations, but stated that this is not observed. Burgers,6 and Burgers and Ploos van Amstel,7 found that, in zirconium, the original orientation is retained after two phase transformations. Newkirk and Geisler8 observed similar behavior in titanium. On the basis of this evidence, it appears that, in the absence of plastic deformation, textures present in annealed titanium alloys are retained. Heating an a-ß alloy to the all-ß region and subsequent cooling to room temperature do not make the orientation of the mar-tensite different from that of the original a phase. In the present investigation it was possible to take advantage of the crystallographic relationships involved in the martensitic transformation to minimize the errors associated with preferred orientation. The relative orientation for titaniu-m marten-site9 takes the form (0001), 11 (110)ß; [1120], 11 [lll]ß. The same relationship has been proposed for zirconium' and certain titanium-base alloys.10-12 Additional sets of approximately parallel planes have been determined for titanium-nickel alloys." The influence of preferred orientation can be minimized by comparing intensities from parallel planes in the two related phases. If it is assumed that each family of planes in a given phase is equally well populated, the effect of preferred orientation can be eliminated by using the normal multiplicity for the family of planes since each set of parallel planes is equally preferred for any orientation of the sample relative to the X-ray beam. The most suitable combination of reflections in the Ti-6A1-4V alloy appeared to be (0002), and (110)ß It must be recognized that the ß formed during aging of the Ti-6A1-4V alloy is a precipitate rather

Discussion of the paper of R. B. Woodworth, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 107, November, 1915, pp. 2247 to 2312. R. B. WOODWORTH, Pittsburgh, Pa.-This is a very long paper. It is a structural engineer's contribution to the art of mining and is written from his standpoint rather than from that of the mining engineer, and is, therefore, a study in the development of drilling structures by one who has made it his business to design structures rather than mechanism and machinery and rather than to utilize those structures in the actual exploitation of oil and gas. Drilling practice varies widely in different oil and gas fields. The , problems of western Pennsylvania are much simpler than the problems of the Mid-Continent and of the Gulf Coastal Plain and these again are simpler than problems of the Pacific Coast. The history of the commercial development of oil and gas is recorded in the annual publications of the U. S. Geological Survey and other bodies whose business it is to make record of statistics. The mechanical and structural features of the art of drilling have not yet received adequate treatment by the historian. Scattered references may be found on the subject in almost any work dealing at large with petroleum and its production. These references, however, are to those particular aspects of the matter that were contemporary with the publications themselves, but so far as I am aware there is no continuous and comprehensive account written of the development of drilling structures from their beginnings down to the present time, and certainly the more modern application of steel in the construction of such structures has not previously had an adequate discussion. With this latter phase of the subject I have been intimately associated, indeed, taking to myself the credit for having, in a way, been responsible more than any one else in the United States for the application of steel in the manufacture of drilling structures, and the purpose of the paper which is now before you is to record particularly the steps in that development while the subject is still fresh and the data available.

VOLUME 6 of the Transactions of the Baikov Institute of Metallurgy, Moscow, is devoted to the subject of "the experimental and theoretical study of the physical characteristics of dilute solid solutions,11 and summarizes work that has been done largely in the years 1958-9. In view of the attention that Soviet investigators have given to this subject, it seemed useful to carry out an independent experimental investigation in an effort to judge the scientific basis and practical significance of this field of study. The present note is a preliminary report of this investigation. The first property studied by the Soviet group was X-ray spectra of solid-solution alloys.' An anomaly observed at low concentrations (--0.05 at. pct) of the alloying element led to the theory that each impurity atom in a transition-metal base alloy is the center of a "block" of affected atoms with a radius of about 10"7 cm. This theory was further developed in a later paper.2 By this time similar anomalies had been found in diffusion coefficients3 and in thermal expansion.4 The entire development up to 1959 was reviewed in a comprehensive paper, and further theoretical ideas were also published at this time. Finally, the volume mentioned above was published in 19607 giving new experimental data on anomalies in optical properties and Hall constant, and a new theoretical treatment also appeared.' Although western scientists have done both theoretical work, summarized recently by Friedel,9 and considerable experimental work on dilute solid solutions, there is little support for the marked anomalies reported in the Soviet papers. Of the physical properties studied by the Soviet investigators, thermal expansion was chosen for the present investigation because of the relative ease of obtaining the necessary precision of measurement. A Leitz dilatometer was used for this purpose, and a special technique involving interchanging of the two specimens being compared permitted a precision of 0.05 x X in average thermal expansion over the range 27° to 600°C. The specimens were heated and cooled in vacuum or in a protective atmosphere at a rate of 50 °C per hr. Ferrovac E iron was used as the comparison specimen and in every case had a coefficient of expansion higher than (or equal to) that of the alloy. Since unintentional impurities are an important factor in studies of dilute alloys, special attention was given to the purity of the iron and the alloys used. The alloys were the same of those used by Abrahamson10 and by Michalak," and their preparation is described in these references. Chemical analyses of the Ferrovac E iron and of typical Fe-W and Fe-Mo alloys are given in Table I. The purity of the iron and alloys is undoubtedly higher than in the

This paper is a continuation of two earlier papers,1,2 and presents new data on the grindability of various ores and other materials-the results of several years of intermittent research work on the nature of grinding and interpretation of test results. It is divided into five parts: 1. The tabulated results of several hundred grindability tests on a wide variety of ores. 2. A method of correcting screen analyses and calculating from them the surface and other properties. 3. A description of a. new method of measuring the "surface energy" of in ore by pendulum impact tests. 4. Test results. 5. A general discussion of the test results and their application to grinding problems.

INTRODUCTION-SYSTEM DESIGN The design of an underground mining operation requires the integration of transportation, ventilation, ground control, and mining methods to form a system which provides the highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel; the lowest cost per ton of product; the most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use; the maximum percent recovery of the reserve, consistent with cost and subsidence rights ; and the minimum disturbance to the environment. The selection of mining method is generally the controlling factor in overall mine design. Some important considerations in the choice of mining method are : 1) Depth of cover over the coal seam. 2) Strength and thickness of rock strata in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam, including thickness, nature and location of impurities or irregularities, dip (or pitch), nature and direction of cleavage, hardness, and structural strength of the coal. 4) Nature and strength of the immediate roof (top) over the coal seam. 5) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 6) Presence and amount of explosive gas (methane). 7) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 8) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. 9) Any restrictions on recovery required for subsidence control. Topographical and geological reports and maps of the area are usually available from state and federal geological surveys, and contain excellent general information to guide more detailed investigations. Exploratory drilling, and the plotting and analysis of the information thus obtained, are essential steps in any development program, and aid in the correlation and evaluation of information gained by other means. THE first discovery of zinc 011 the property now worked by this company was made by the celebrated mineralogist, Prof. William Theodore Rapper, in 1845. Different claimants kept the property in continual litigation till 1861, when everything was satisfactorily settled by the purchase of the land by the company, who have worked it ever since. The mines are situated in a valley, four miles south of Bethlehem, Pa., in Lehigh County. The valley is from two to three miles broad, and is bounded 011 the north and south by syenitic hills. Syenite underlies the valley, and upon this is deposited the Potsdam sandstone, then a layer of slate, and, finally, a dolomitic limestone, belonging to the Chazy or Black River formation, in which the zinc deposits are inclosed. The rocks occur in folds, and have evidently been subjected to tremendous pressure from below, the zinc deposit being found in an anticlinal axis, in nearly vertical veins. At the AIME meeting in Tampa in Oct. 1966, an empirically developed equation was presented which allowed the calculation of free settling velocity for any sized particle: 1 [ ] This equation requires the use of two parameters a and p which are coefficients derived from boundary layer theory.2 It was possible to develop values of a and p for several minerals by back calculation of published data. The original equation had one major flaw. When the fluid density exceeds the density of the solids, the solution to the equation becomes imaginary. A flaw was indicated also by the fact that galena and sylvite both having cubic cleavage, did not have similar values for a and b. Galena gave calculated values of a = 1.082 and g = 3.11, while sylvite gave values of a = 1.870 and p = 2.56. These flaws prompted further study of the equation, resulting in the following empirical modification: [ ] It is obvious a real solution of the equation is possible for all values of ps and p. When PL > PS, V is negative, indicating that the particles will rise against the attraction of gravity. The validity of the modification is borne out by the fact that when values of a and p were back calculated for galena and sylvite using the modified equation, both minerals gave values of a = 1.038 and p = 3.01. Nearly 2000 people are employed at Kennecott's Chino Mines Division, which recently completed its 50th year as a leading copper producer. Chino operates an open pit mine at Santa Rita, N.M., and a reduction plant, including mill, power plant, and smelter, at Hurley, N.M. The property mines 66,000 tons of copper ore and materials per day. There have been safety and industrial health programs at Chino for a number of years, but in 1955 these procedures were reorganized on a more active basis. The following discussion evaluates the progress made during the 1955-1958 period.
