Large tonnage operations face many problems in adequately planning ahead for future years production. In order to maintain desired levels of production, such problems as source of tonnage, man- power and equipment requirements, tailings disposal and water requirements must be anticipated. Of course, before any of these problems can be analyzed, daily tonnage requirements and its source must be determined. Looking ahead for one year or even two or three is usually not sufficient time to adequately prepare an area for production. Because of the sequence of mining and the multilevel nature of the 42,000 tpd Climax mine in Colorado long-range planning must be on a ten-year basis. By using a ten-year base, adequate time is allowed to gain access and prepare a new level for production. Usually eight years will be required for this phase of the initial mine preparation. Once production has been started on a level and access to the area is available, three years is usually sufficient to prepare a new block for production as long as it follows in the normal sequence of mining.

The term "timbered stope" is here meant to denote stopes in which timbering is the predominant feature of the mining method. Stopes with stull sets, as in the Hecla mine, are types of timbered stopes; these types are probably the best-known. Timbering stopes by means of square sets is not as common as formerly, as the system is not often necessary, yet there are good examples and large tonnages are being mined by the method. The square set may be utilized in ordinary overhand stopes if the orebody is suitable. At some mines, square sets have been abandoned in favor of top-slicing; and at others, the square set has superseded horizontal cut and backfilling. A drift, either in the wall or orebody, is necessary before opening the sill floor. In wide deposits, there may be a grillage of drifts and crosscuts, and at least one raise to the level above is needed in each stope for ventilation and handling timbers and filling. The square sets are filled with waste rock from the hanging wall, sorted from the ore, from development work, or from the level above. As a rule, little timber is recovered. The examples include the Butte district, Mother Lode of California, Bunker Hill & Sullivan, Hecla, and Morning mines.

This paper discusses the physical parameters involved in the slow flow of high molecular weight polymer solutions in porous media. The interacting effects of polymer properties and porous media properties on flow performance are considered. Experiments were conducted with the polyethylene oxides, with molecular weights ranging from 200,000 to over 5,000,000. Frontal advance velocities ranged from I to 30 ft/day. The porous matrix consisted of a flow cell packed with glass beads. Polymer solutions were characterized by viscosity and normal stress measurements. Under certain conditions, unexpectedly high flow resistance was observed. This behavior was observed to be a function of flow rate, pore size, polymer molecular weight and concentration. The polymer solutions exhibit "dilatant" flow behavior in porour media in contrast with the pseudo-plastic behavior in simple flow systems. A theoretical ex-planation of such behavior is presented. INTRODUCTION The use of polymers in the injected water of a waterflood increases oil displacement efficiency by reducing the mobility (k,/pu) of the driving phase. A reduced driving phase mobility results in improvements in the areal sweep efficiency and in the vertical coverage in stratified reservoirs. This mobility reduction may be achieved by a permeability reduction, a viscosity increase or by a combination of the two. Early attempts at increasing the injected water viscosity were not successful because of the poor economics involved. The use of such materials as glycerin, sugar or glycols to increase water viscosity was not economically feasible. Attempts in using certain naturally occurring polymers were not too successful because of the high polymer losses to the rock. A high molecular weight, partially hydrolyzed polyacry-lamide was introduced 3 years ago as a waterflood additive.',' Initial work by Pye' indicated that the presence of these polymers in dilute concentrations decreases the water mobility 5 to 20 times more than would be expected from measurements of the solution viscosity. Such an effect would be of obvious economic value since only a small polymer concentration would be required to accomplish a large reduction in water mobility. This research was designed to study the basic flow mech anisms of polymer solutions in porous media. The interacting effects of polymer properties and porous media properties on flow performance are considered. This study indicates some of the conditions under which these interactions can lead to significant mobility effects. is valid only for Newtonian fluids. For polymer solutions and other non-Newtonian fluids the equation must be modified to consider that viscosity is a variable quantity. Modification of the Darcy equation to include non-Newtonian effects has been the subject of several recent investigations."" The modifications generally adopt a rheological model. such as an Ellis or Dower law model. to Dorous media by defining some characteristic channel radius. Most of these studies showed the porous media flow behavior to be predictable from viscometric data. Investigations involving the flow of high molecular weight polyacrylamide solutions through cores have generally encountered the high flow resistances reported previously by Pye. This high flow resistance has generally been attributed to an in-depth permeability reduction, as evidenced by a reduced permeability to water which has displaced polymer solution from the porous media. Marshall and Metzner" report high flow resistances, which they attribute to viscoelastic effects. In this paper, the effects of polymer molecular weight, pore size, flow rate and concentration are considered. The polymers used are the polyethylene oxides known as Poly-ox. This class of polymers was used because of its availability in a wide range of molecular weights and because of its known ability to propagate well through porous media. THEORY PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYMER SOLUTIONS The polymer molecule dissolves in water by means of hydrogen bonding, but retains some of its own structural identity while in solution. Nonionic polymers, such as polyethylene oxide, are generally considered to have a random coiling configration. This type of molecule has the ability to "sequester" or hold a large volume of solvent within its coils in a manner similar to that of a sponge. The latter method corresponds with the direct effect. of low and high finishing-temperatures ; that is, a plus difference indicates low, and a minus difference high, finishing-temperature. I make this explanation to prevent confusion in comparing the two papers. Mr. Sauveur has shown that there is a close relation between the size of the grain and the ultimate strength, and also that the size of the grain depends on the temperature at which the material is finished in rolling, and on the chemical composition of the steel. The traces of fossils herein described were discovered in or upon piles or heaps of iron-ores upon the docks at Erie, Pa. The author has worked among these ore-piles since 1890, when his attention was first directed to what looked like organic remains upon certain specimens collected. All the specimens described and figured herein were found by him, and, as no ironore is used at Erie, and no other iron-ores, save those of the Lake Superior region, find their way to the stock-piles at this place, there can be no question but that the specimens in question are genuine ore transported from that region over the great lakes, and cannot have been brought in from other ironore regions. The author has reason to think that no fossil remains have been reported hitherto as occurring in the iron-ores of the Lake Superior region, and he believes that these specimens, however imperfect, rank among the oldest forms of which man has any knowledge. The illustrations are engraved from photographs of drawings. The specimens themselves have not been photographed, because their condition would have prevented bringing out, by that process of reproduction, all the markings as clearly as is necessary, and would have rendered the specimens otherwise less distinct by reason of the blotchy character of their colors, the presence of cracks, or of marks more or less in contact with those of the organisms. In drawing these remains, therefore, I left out everything upon the specimens of ore that did not seem to belong in any way or contribute to their value as illustrations of the fossils. According to information obtained from the dock superintendent at Erie, Pa., the majority of these specimens came from the Chapin mine, Iron Mountain, Menominee range, Mich. SINCE 1925, when the preferred orientations in compressed aluminum were first determined1, 2 the orientations have been described as a fiber texture in which a face diagonal, [110], of the face-centered cubic lattice is parallel to the compression axis. Subsequent experiments have seemed to confirm this texture,3-5 and a number of theories (recently summarized in references 6 and 7) have been proposed to explain it and to relate it to the behavior of single crystals during compression. 3,8-11 The experiments reported in this paper prove that the orientations are not adequately described as quoted above-i.e., as a [110] fiber texture-although this is a first approximation to the actual texture. They also show that the texture cannot be thought of as a stable orienta-tion that is reached and maintained after a sufficient amount of deforma-tion. The actual texture, when studied in detail at successive stages of compression, indicates that a hitherto unsuspected range of orientations is present, both in the polycrystalline metal as a whole and in various individual grains in its interior, and that a state of dynamic equilibrium exists within this range. The reasons for the failure of previous theories to predict the actual texture become obvious when the heterogeneous nature of the flow is considered. In addition to the deformation texture, the manner of its develop-ment, and its theory, this paper presents data on the following related subjects: the identity of strain markings in aluminum; the orientation changes in aluminum single crystals during compression and a com-parison of these with the conditions in individual grains of a polycrystal-line specimen; the origin of asterism in deformed single crystals, which heretofore has been regarded as a distortion localized at the surfaces of slip planes; and the relation of plastic strain in individual grains in an aggregate to the strain of the whole.

IN a technical civilization, that is. one whose major difference from past civilizations is its enormous development of technology, in transportation, communication, labor saving, centralized control, and mass production, it is natural that the most critical problems should be those that arise out of technologic advances; it is natural also that a. man who understands these advances should be chosen as the leader to meet these problems. This was done in the selection of Herbert Hoover as President of the United States. Mr. Hoover was a good, and perhaps a great President. But he was not a great politician and that ensured his defeat when a crisis came.

Magnetic torque studies of ferromagnetic single crystals have been carried out in a number of laboratories during the last decade&apos;s2 and some work has been reported on polycrystalline material showing preferred orientation. Goss3 used the method extensively in developing electrical sheet with desirable magnetic properties, but he used it as a control rather than as a means of studying the texture. Bozorth4 made a quantitative correlation of a torque curve he obtained from some cold-rolled iron with the texture as determined from X-rays, but did not extend his studies beyond the one specimen. Other studies, which have been reported from time to time2,5 have also been incomplete in the sense that no effort was made to study a whole series of samples, differing only in degree of cold reduction or in the annealing temperature, in order to ascertain the effect of such treatments on the texture as revealed by torque measurements. It is the purpose of this investigation to make such a study, mainly in order to see how useful the method can be made when used under favorable circumstances and to find what kind of a correlation can be expected between magnetic and X-ray studies of texture. Before proceeding further, it is desirable to say a little about single crystals, so as to make clear the concepts involved in magnetic torque measurements. Magnetic Torque Method It is fairly well known nowadays that single crystals of ferromagnetic substances have directions of easy magnetization and of hard magnetization. In Fig. 1 are reproduced typical magnetization curves for a single crystal of iron, which show that in a < 100 > direction saturation occurs at low fields compared to those required to saturate the same crystal in a <110> or a <111> direction. ONE of the fundamental principles of efficiency is the use of adequate and permanent records. The rapid increase in the manufacture and use of recording pryometers is a proof of the appreciation of efficiency principles on the part of the manufacturers engaged in the various technical industries. Where recording pyrometers are not employed in an industry in which temperature measurements are necessary, one will generally find that a printed form is used upon which is written, periodically, the temperatures measured by an indicating instrument. It is no serious condemnation of the workman to state that such records are often "doctored," but it is rather a reflection upon the executive who puts such temptation in the way of a workman. One of the well-known "tricks of the trade" is to "force." a furnace so that it will be at the proper temperature during the periodic trips of the foreman or other official. Indicating instruments and recorders may be used together to great advantage. The recorder furnishes .a printed record and a check upon the operator of the furnace, and a record of value in correlating properties of the finished product with the heat treatment. The indicator should be of assistance to the operator in controlling the furnace or oven. Modern practice requires a temperature-recording instrument that is as simple as possible, rugged, reliable, and sufficiently accurate. Of these qualifications reliability is paramount, particularly in cases where the recorder is used for controlling the temperature automatically. By a reliable instrument is meant one that will run continuously with little attention and with a consistent degree of accuracy. That is, if it is in error by 5 per cent. one day, it must be in error by a like amount on any other clay, and not by 2 per cent. or 10 per cent. The earlier forms of recorders were complex and delicate, or mechanically unsatisfactory and inaccurate, and required considerable attention to keep them in operation. Within the past few years, however, the development in the manufacture of temperature recording devices has been highly satisfactory and many excellent instruments are now available. .

BY plotting fixed carbon against British thermal units of coals free from mineral matter, and ranging in rank from anthracite to lignite, it is found that the coals of higher rank, from anthracite to the higher rank of the high-volatile bituminous coals, inclusive, can be separated into groups according to their degree of metamorphism by reference to their fixed carbon. Such charts show also that the coals lower in rank can be best separated into groups with respect to B.t.u., especially when plotted on the moist basis, that is, coal containing its natural bed moisture. A tentative scheme for coal classification was presented at the October, 1932, meeting of the Technical Committee on Scientific Classification, of the American Standards Association Sectional Com-mittee on Coal Classification. This scheme was sponsored by Sub-committee IV on Tentative Classification of Coals, under the chairmanship of W. T. Thom, Jr. It proposed the grouping of coals according to rank by reference to fixed carbon and B.t.u., on the basis of coal containing its natural bed moisture but free from mineral matter. This scheme proposed classifying coals into four broad classes: (1) anthracitic, (2) bituminous, (3) subbituminous, (4) lignitic.. The anthracitic class was divided into three groups designated as meta-anthracite, normal anthracite, and semianthracite. The bituminous class also was divided into three groups, low volatile, medium volatile, and high volatile. The high-volatile group was further subdivided into four subgroups according to moisture content, as follows: (1) less than 5 per cent, (2) 5 to 10 per cent, (3) 10 to 15 per cent, and (4) 15 per cent and more. The subbituminous class was divided into two groups, group, 1 including subbituminous coals having calorific values of 10,500 B.t.u. or more, and group 2 including those with less than 10,500 B.t.u. , The lignitic class of coal was divided into two groups both below 8,000.B.t.u., the one group consisting of consolidated and the other of unconsolidated

NOVA SCOTIA is sharing in the rapid advance of the mining industry that is one of the remark- able features of Canada&apos;s recent progress. The production of coal and gypsum has increased rapidly, and there has also been a marked development in the mining of gold, salt, zinc, copper and other minerals. Coal, the basis of the principal mining industry in the Province, was discovered by the early explorers on the shore of Cape Breton Island, and used by the garrison at Halifax as early as 1749. The first government record shows total annual sales amounting to 1668 long tons in the year 1785, while last year production was 6,643,000 long tons. The principal mines are discussed in a separate paper by Alexander L. Hay1.

THE Smackover oil and gas field lies in Ouachita and Union Counties, Ark., in the south-central part of the state, in T.15 and 16S., R.15, 16, and 17W. It is 10 miles north of El Dorado, the principal business and railroad center in the south-central part of the state, and extends from the town of Smackover in all directions. Productive territory having an aggregate area of nearly 55 sq. mi. has been developed. It extends 6 miles from north to south and 12 miles from east to west. The field may be divided into two parts: the east district, which includes the area east of the town of Smackover, and the west district, which includes the area west of the town of Smackover. In relation to the neighboring productive fields of Arkansas, the Smackover field is 9 miles north of .the El Dorado oil and gas field, 8 miles slightly west of north of the East El Dorado oil and gas field, and 16 miles east of the Stephens oil field. Smackover was discovered in May, 1922, when the Oil Operators Trust drilled well No. 1 on the J. T. Murphy farm, in the southeast quarter of sec. 8, T. 16S., R.15W. This well is located almost, on the top of the Norphlet dome and was drilled to the Nacatoch sand. It had an initial open flow volume of 30,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas per day, and a rock pressure of 950 lb. per sq. in. In July, 1922, the V. K. F. Co. completed the first oil well in sec. 29, T.15S., R.15W., on the north side of the Norphlet dome, and 3 miles north of the first gas well. This well started the active development of the north and northwest sides of the dome.1

SINCE Honda and Murakami1 in 1918 proposed their constitutional diagram of the carbon-free iron-tungsten system, considerable effort has been expended by several investigators in attempts to define more positively the structural features of the alloys. The existence of an intermediate phase corresponding to the formula Fe3W2 (68.7 per cent W) was proposed from evidence of a purely metallographic nature by one of the present authors2 in 1926. Since that time the identity of this phase has been confirmed by Arnfelt3 and by Takeda,4 both of whom employed X-ray methods as well as the microscope and the chemical analysis of isolated microconstituents. According to Arnfelt, Fe3W2, as crystallized from the iron-rich melts at a temperature above 1450&apos;C., contains by analysis 68.7 per cent W. The lattice of this phase is characterized by trigonal symmetry. Arnfelt, moreover, proposed a second intermediate phase formed at some temperature between 1450° and 1000° C. by a peritectoid reaction involving Fe3W2 and the iron-rich solid solution. A melt containing 25 per cent W was cooled to 1000° C. and heated for. 100 hr. The precipitated tungsten-rich constituent was separated and found by analysis to contain 62.6 per cent W. This composition agrees closely with that represented by the formula Fe2W (62.2 per cent W). Diffraction patterns from the concentrated precipitate showed a hexagonal unit cell. Takeda confirmed the data of Arnfelt regarding Fe3W2 but was unable to detect Arnfelt&apos;s second intermediate phase. While Takeda. failed to describe in detail the treatments employed, he stated that in alloys containing 40 per cent W which were quenched after heating at various temperatures between 1200° and 1450° C., no evidence of the second phase (Fe2W) was observed either in the microstructure or in the diffraction patterns of isolated residues. He therefore considered the existence of this low-temperature hexagonal compound as disproved.

Selective flocculation studies carried out with iron ore tailings generated at Kudremukh iron ore plant indicate that a concentrate containing 63% iron can be obtained from the tailings containing 34% iron with around 60% recovery. This opens up the possibility of recovering most of the iron lost in the tailings generated at 2 kt/h (2200 stph) while processing 22 Mt (24 million st) ore per year. This would mean that the productivity could increase by around 50%. In these studies, it has been established that caustic degraded tapioca starch is a most effective agent for selective flocculation. While potato starch after caustic degradation can also be used, neither the parent starch nor the amylopectin compound is as effective.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—In answer to one of the inquiries made of Mr. Conner, and as a matter of historical record, I beg to say that the idea of supporting the strata over worked-out areas in coalmines by flushing the openings full of culm originated and was put into actual practice by the late R. C. Luther, a former member of the Institute, at that time Chief Mining Engineer, and later General Manager, of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. In the early 80&apos;s the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. purchased from Messrs. Hecksher & Co. the Eohinoor colliery, situated in the western part of the borough of Shenan-doah, Pa. On taking possession of the colliery the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. made a conlplete resurvey of the mine-workings, giving an absolutely correct map which showed not only the plan of the mine-workings, but also every improvement on the surface over the workings, and the marked features of the surface of the ground. Tidal elevations were shown at every eurvey-station in the mine and on the surface, so that, as is the case with all the maps of the company, contour-maps of either the surface or the bottom of any coal-seam, or geological cross-sections, could be constructed directly from the information on the mine-maps. In a cornparatively short time after the company took possession of the colliery, the workings which extended under the western portion of the borough of Shenandoah began to cause trouble and damage dwellings and other buildings in that section of the town. The lots in this section had been sold, in many cases, to individuals by the Gilbert & Shaefer Estate, owners of the coal-lands on which the colliery was located. In

MINAS DE MATAHAMBRE, S.A. is a Cuban mining corporation with mines located in the Matahambre district about 100 miles westerly from Havana in the Province of Pinar del Rio. The port of entry is the subport of Santa Lucia on the north coast of Cuba. The mines are located six miles inland at the town of Minas de Matahambre. Minas de Matahambre and Santa Lucia are connected by a 9-mile automobile road, and a 30,000-ft. Leschen aerial tramway. At the subport of Santa Lucia the company maintains docks, concentrate bins, tugs, lighters, and miscellaneous shipping equipment. The power plant of the company is also located at Santa Lucia. Connection between the power plant and the mine is effected by a 30,000-ft. transmission line. In the town of Minas de Matahambre are located the mines, concentrator, shops, and warehouses. The con-centrates are transported to Santa Lucia by the Leschen aerial tramway. The mines are equipped with three shafts, viz., Nos. 1, 2, and 3. (Fig. 1.) No. 1 Shaft is a three-compartment vertical tim-bered shaft and has reached a depth of 1825 ft. This is the present main hoisting shaft. No. 2 Shaft is a four-compartment vertical shaft lined with steel sets and native hardwood lagging. Certain portions where the ground is heavy have been lined with re-inforced concrete. Practically all production will be hoisted eventually through this shaft. No. 3 Shaft is a three-compartment vertical timbered shaft. It has reached a depth of 1090 ft. Its purpose is for prospecting, ventilation, and handling men and sup-plies through the north section of the mine.

Tensile, hardness and density properties are presented for a new 18-8 stainless steel powder for the —50, —100, and —140 mesh cuts and also for a prepared blend containing 62 pct —325 mesh powder. The data were obtained for sintering temperatures of 2100° to 2350°F and for compacting pressures of 30 to 50 tons per sq in. A NEED has existed for a stainless steel powder of uniform composition from particle to particle, which could be readily molded and sintered, and which would yield moderate to high strength and ductility when processed into parts by standard powder metallurgy techniques. The literature reveals that previously available powders have been lacking in one or several of these desirable characteristics. Originally attempts to produce stainless steel powder by blending and diffusing elemental metal powders were unsuccessfu1.l A truly alloyed stainless steel powder reported by Dale in 1947 yielded reasonable mechanical properties but required an exceptionally high sintering temperature of 2400°F in pure dry hydrogen.&apos; A later development reported in 1950 by Stern provided a stainless type powder of excellent molding properties&apos; but this powder likewise required sintering at temperatures over 2350 °F and did not yield properties as high as those previously reported. The powder was not truly alloyed prior to sintering. A prealloyed stainless steel powder has been developed that is readily moldable at 30 to 50 tons per sq in., can be sintered at low temperatures (2100" to 2300°F), and which yields compacts with both high strength and ductility. The powder is prepared by the liquid disintegration method," direct from molten metal. Early attempts to make 18 pct Cr, 8 pct Ni stainless steel powder by this method did not produce a usable powder for pressing and sintering because of a preponderance of spherical particles with relatively high, surface oxide content. It was learned that silicon additions to iron alloys, powdered by this process, gave bright powder of low-oxide content and such additions were made to 18-8 stainless with similar results. An attendant change in particle shape occurred reducing the number of spheroids materially. The optimum composition which has been studied and is reported here contains approximately 2.5 pct Si. Silicon additions to stainless steel of the 18-8 type improve the resistance to high-temperature oxidation and promote the formation of ferrite. Corrosion resistance is, however, controlled by chromium content and even though ferrite may exist the corrosion resistance is not generally impaired.4 Experimental Procedure A detailed study of the 18-8, 2.5 pct Si powder has been made in accordance with the following outline: 1. Following the suggestion of Engineering Council and at the direction of, the President, representatives from each of the Federal Government bureaus interested in map-making were called into a conference for the purpose of coordinating all of the Government&apos;s map-making activities. This conference has now reported back to the President the results of its findings, which indicate that Engineering Council&apos;s recommendation in this matter was well founded. While the conference report states that its members were of the opinion that little duplication of effort existed, it recommends the formation of a permanent Board of Surveys and Maps. An extended review of the map-making activities, which is given as an appendix to the report, indicates that this recommendation is a logical step. The conference recommendations concerning this Board of Surveys and Maps are as follows: (1) the Board is to he com-posed of representatives of mapping bureaus to be assisted by outside engineering organizations, which have been named above; (2) the estab-lishment of an information office in one of the Government bureaus, preferably the Geological Survey, which is to be under the supervision of the Board and is to be a mapping information clearing house for the Government and outside engineering organizations; (3) copyright laws are to be so changed that copies of all. maps made in the United States and with Governmental authority, will go to the central information office; (4) the Government departments are to receive orders to cooperate, with the Board; (5) future topographic maps of all kinds are to conform with specifications for the standard topographic map; (6) the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey to have supervision of final adjustment of all important control data under specifications approved by Board of Surveys and Maps; (7) surveys in the form of maps and publications are to be issued as soon as possible after field work has been completed; (8) program of the Interdepartmental Committee on Aerial Surveying was approved. Outside technical and scientific organizations that are called in for consultation are to operate in an advisory capacity only, responsibility for action on Governmental work is. to rest solely with the Governmental agencies.

This paper describes the microstructural changes that occur when quenched ultrahigh-strength steels containing OA pet C and various amounts of nickel, silicon, and cobalt are tempered. The changes that occur in hardness, yield strength, and martensite diffraction-peak widths when these steels are tempered are related to the precipitation of the carbide phases. An unea$ectedly high silicon content (about 30 pct) was found in the E -carbide phase in a steel containing only 1.5 pct Si. TEMPERED martensitic steels have such wide-spread utility that they have been the subject of numerous investigations, and a sizable amount of literature has developed on this subject.M This investigation, which is a part of a larger program to correlate microstructure with mechanical properties at a variety of strength levels, is limited to the microstructural changes that occur when a quenched 0.40 pct carbon steel (USS Airsteel X-200 steel) is tempered, and to the effects of the alloying elements—nickel, cobalt, and silicon—on these microstructures. Used in this investigation were electron microscopy, electron-diffraction identification of the carbide phases, electron-probe micro-analysis of the carbides, X-ray determinations of retained austenite, and measurements of martensite X-ray diffract ion-peak widths. MATERIALS AND METHODS The chemical analyses of the eight heats examined eats No. 30 through 37) are shown in Table L Heat No. 30 has the chemical com~osition of Airsteel X-200, and the remaining seven heats contain various amounts of nickel, chromium, cobalt, and silicon. The heats were air-melted in an induction furnace and cast into 8 by 8 in. ingots that were subsequently heated to 2300 and rolled to 1-in.-thick plate. Oversize 0.505-in.-diam tensile specimens were rough-machined from the plates and austenitized in air at 1700° F for half an hour and oil-quenched. The specimens were then tempered in air at temperatures of 400° to 1000 for tempering times of 1, 4, and 16 hr, and finish-machined to 0.505-in.-diam tensile specimens. Electron micrographs were prepared from Formvar replicas of the midthickness of tensile-specimen shanks that had been electrolytically polished and etched in nital. Electron-diffraction patterns were obtained from carbon-extraction replicas. The replicas were prepared by etching the sample surface in the same manner as for microscopy, evaporating carbon on the etched surface, and re-etching the sample to free the carbon film and the precipitate particles. Electron-probe microanalysis was performed on some of the extraction replicas. To obtain adequate fluorescent X-ray intensities, several thicknesses of replica were exposed to the electron beam so that the results represent an average composition of the extracted particles rather than an analysis of single precipitate particles. The retained austenite contents of the specimens were determined by an empirical X-ray diffraction
