Climax Molybdenum Company’s Henderson Mine is a large panel caving molybdenum mine located about 43 miles west of Denver, Colorado. Three Joy M120-72-880 fans are installed in parallel on the No. 1 exhaust shaft. Throughout the mine’s history, ventilation changes such as the completion of the No. 5 exhaust shaft have decreased the utilization of these fans. To optimize fan performance they have been run with the full complement of 16 blades, down to as few as four blades. Since the completion of ventilation upgrades associated with the Henderson 2000 project, one surface fan has been operated under normal conditions with 10 or 12 blades. With the completion of a new network model of the Henderson ventilation system, a tool was built to develop fan curves for possible future fan configurations and predict future fan performance. This paper describes the tool and its use at Henderson.

New equipment to handle specialized operations is being developed and new techniques for its use explored. One such system is reviewed. Another is a potential system for handling the thinner stray coal seams between the more profitable thick seams. The availability of federal coal leases in the West is reviewed and current planning discussed. Gulf Coast lignites have been of much interest in recent months and are overviewed.

This section deals with one of the most fascinating aspects of mining the evaluation of mine investment opportunities. Be-fore proceeding further, it is important to clarify the meaning of some fundamental terms used frequently in the text. 6.0.1.1 Mine Valuation vs. Evaluation The words "valuation" and "evaluation" in a mining context are often used interchangeably. However, for the purposes of this section, a distinction is made between the two terms in accordance with commonly accepted practice. The word valuation in a mining project context has the rather narrow meaning of placing a dollar or other currency value on the worth of the project as a whole. In other words, the value of a mining project refers to a measure of the desirability of ownership of that property. As such, the major item of interest is, "what is the mine worth?," or `what is the value of the mine?" The value of a mining project may actually be determined in the marketplace at any specific point in time, or it may be estimated by one of several methods. The efficient operation of an open pit mine presupposes that the slopes are maintained at an angle which closely approaches that of the ultimate stability of the slope. In order to do this in a safe manner, it is essential that the data relating to the behavior of the slopes be monitored and made available, through an instrumentation system, to the appropriate personnel so that soundly-based engineering decisions may be reached with the minimum of wasted effort. In addition to simply detecting potential failures, the system should also define what type of failure is developing; i.e., rotational, wedge, or dilational failures. Providing this data is the prime function of a stability monitoring system. Therefore, in an operating open pit mine, the instrumentation system must provide information which will have a direct bearing upon both the safety and the economics of the operation, as well as provide data which is pertinent to initial design, or to the re-design of slopes where developing instability is found to be a problem.6 It is possible to excavate pit slopes which will remain stable under extremely adverse conditions; however, such slopes would usually be so flat that they would tend to render the operation of a pit uneconomical which might otherwise be mined at a profit. On this basis, all practical pit slopes must be considered to be, to some ex- tent, unstable; if they are not, the design is too conservative and the mine is not returning its maximum profit. To reduce the problem to its fundamentals, one can simply state that the ideal pit slope design produces a slope which stands with zero maintenance for the entire life of the pit and then collapses into the final excavation as soon as the personnel and equipment have been removed. Such a design is impossible to achieve, but the fact remains that an efficient slope would hover on the edge of failure for the life of I the pit. As one retreats from this position, the profitability of the mine decreases because of an unduly conservative design.

Accidents involving powered haulage and mobile equipment such as haul trucks often account for the greatest number of fatalities in the mining industry each year. Despite previous analyses that have identified root causes and other contributing factors, there is still a need to better understand the events leading up to these types of accidents, what lessons may be learned, and what strategies can be employed to prevent fatal accidents from occurring. This study examines Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) using the critical decision method (CDM). The CDM is a retrospective interview approach used to explore timelimited, high-stakes, decision-making. In this study the CDM is used to obtain more information about what happens prior to, during, and after a potentially fatal situation such as a near-miss event, loss of control, or minor accident involving equipment damage. Researchers captured firsthand accounts from 21 haul truck operators involved in near-miss events from mine sites of various sizes and commodities throughout the United States. These accounts provide rich and detailed narratives from the perspective of haul truck operators themselves and reveal insights into what decisions haul truck operators make, what sensory cues they perceive, and what strategies they employ during challenging and non-routine situations. Decision-related themes that emerged from the data are presented and discussed. These results, along with potential solutions offered by study participants, can help to inform future research, raise awareness about hidden hazards, and build more creative interventions and realistic training scenarios for use by the industry to address haul truck safety issues.

Mining claims must have a discovery of a valuable mineral deposit to be valid. When required, a Federal government mineral examiner makes a determination of validity and recommendations thereof to authorized management officials. The examiner should show whether or not an existing mining operation, or a proposed operation have economic viability. This is accomplished through an analysis of legal entities, land status and use, geologic and mineralogic relationships, and mining, milling and processing techniques considered in an appropriate economic evaluation framework. A framework involves market and market entry studies, reserve analyses, all costs analysis, royalty buyouts, tax structure, discount rate of return, and escalation and risk factors. An income approach to value is then used by means of a simple or complex discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis to certify validity. Whether one claim is owned by a single miner, or hundreds of claims are owned by a large corporation, thorough, fair, consistent, and appropriate economic concepts should be applied by the mineral examiner.

Introduction What drives the price of gold? Supply and demand, of course. But in ways far different from the forces that drive the prices of other major metals, such as steel, aluminum, and copper. Gold, in fact, is one of the few commodities where both buyers and sellers are happy when the price goes up. Current production, production costs, and variations in production have little influence on its price. Gold inventories are so tremendous that current production has small impact on the amounts available to the market at any time. Worldwide gold inventory and production The world's inventories seem to be between 78 and 98 kt (2.5 and 3 billion oz). Since biblical times, the gold miners of the world have produced about 98 kt (3 billion oz), mostly in this century. Only small amounts have been thrown away and most of it - more than 78 kt (2.5 billion oz) - remain in bullion, coins, or jewelry. About 40% is held by central banks and other governmental authorities, 30% by private individuals as bullion or coins, and about 30% as jewelry. Except for some of the jewelry and the few industrial applications, this inventory is constantly available in marketable form at a price. By comparison, gold production is indeed small. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that the world produced 1.5 kt (50 million oz) of gold in 1986. Consequently, production increased world inventories by only 2%. Variations in production have a negligible or very short-term effect on the supply and, consequently, on the markets for gold. Although South Africa mines about 40% to 50% of the world's annual production, continuing labor strife there does not seem to have ruffled gold prices. Determining gold's price Gold prices, however, do determine cutoff grades in the mines and, thus, do influence production. Nonetheless, changes in production have little impact on the inventory supply. Consequently, it has small influence on the price of gold on the market. With a fairly stable supply, price changes are driven by changes in its demand. Unlike other metals, very little of the demand for gold comes from industry. Dental, electronic, and other industrial uses for gold consume less than 46.6 t/a (1.5 million oz per year). It would be safe to assume that such uses are less than 124 t/a (4 million oz per year) for the entire world. Variations in the 124 t (4 million oz), compared to a supply of 78 kt (2.5 billion oz) of supply can have only a negligible effect. Production net of industrial uses adds perhaps 1% annually to world inventories. This could, in time, affect markets. The increase, however, is mostly absorbed by population growth - more people wanting to own gold - and by gold being put in more attractive forms, such as coins. Introduction The issue of coal mining safety plays an important role in the United States' growing dependence on coal to supply its future needs. This article will address the federal government's role, principally the US Bureau of Mines, in meeting this challenging growth and demand while reducing the social and economic costs attributed to injuries and fatalities in underground mining. Some interesting facts and projections with respect to the nation's energy picture will be discussed. This includes the distribution of its reserves and the projected role of coal in the energy and economics of the nation's future. Underground mining will continue to be an important means of providing this coal. The author will discuss how the Bureau of Mines' research program addresses the problems of health and safety that grow out of the demand for more coal. Future projections First, a synopsis of salient facts and projections concerning the US's situation with respect to energy and the economy. Figure 1 depicts the relative quantities of recoverable energy reserves in the United States by their type. Most people are aware of the nation's use of oil. We hear a lot about natural gas. And we are aware of the controversy over the use of nuclear energy. But, while looking at Fig. 1, the question becomes, "Where will our fuel to meet the demand for energy in the future most certainly have to come from?" With 82% of the nation's recoverable fuel reserves being coal, the answer is irrefutable. Coal will be that source. Figure 2 is the present market for coal. It shows that 77% of the coal mined goes to supply electric utilities. Therefore, the coal industry as a whole is most sensitive to the trends and demands for electricity. It is less affected by what happens in other markets, such as export and direct industrial use. In fact, the coal industry is three times more sensitive to the electric utility market than to all other markets combined. Therefore, the trend in the demand for electricity must be examined. Electricity demand is expected to increase steadily over the next 15 years. It is projected to grow from its present 2.3 trillion kWh per year to 3.5 trillion kWh per year by the year 2000. The fuel to supply this increase in demand must come from somewhere. The question is "How much of this extra fuel will be coal?" Although the demand for electricity is predicted to increase, the demand for coal does not necessarily follow. Coal must maintain its fraction of the energy sources used for electricity generation if its demand is to increase at the same or greater rate as electricity. Except for a near-term dip in demand due to a slight increase in nuclear capacity, the domestic electric generation accruing to coal will go from 56% in 1985 to more than 60% in 2005. Thus, the predicted trend is for coal to become a larger part of the fuel mix for electric power generation. Similarly, looking at the most recent forecast for total coal consumption trends, it can be seen that for electric power generation alone, the coal industry must be able to supply an additional 316 Mt/a (348.5 million stpy) by the year 2000 (Fig. 3). It must be stressed here, though, that without significant improvements in mining safety, it can also be easily predicted that injuries and fatalities will increase in proportion to the increase in coal production. Will society consider that acceptable? This author does not believe so. Figure 4 examines the effect of coal prices on the price of electricity. The projections show that the already high proportion of fuel cost will become a greater fraction of the consumer price for electricity. Specifically in 1985, 36% of the price of electricity was the cost of the fuel. In 1995, 46% of the price of electricity will be the fuel cost. That implies that the price of coal will have an increasing influence on the consumer price for electricity. Thus, as coal is used more to generate electricity and as fuel becomes a greater

This section of the Handbook deals with general principles to be evaluated in the development of a mining operation. It addresses the major issues that must be examined to fully evaluate a mining venture. Of course, one of the main topics to be evaluated is mine planning, which is covered in more detail in other sections (13, 17) of the Handbook and should be referenced in mine development projects. The topics to be discussed in this introduction include equipment and supplies, infrastructure, utilities, and project management. In any of the aspects mentioned, the current existing conditions at or near the mine site must be evaluated. This will include assessment of current use of utilities, infrastructure, housing, equipment suppliers, etc., as well as anticipated growth, both in the supply aspect of these systems as well as projected usage on these systems. After full assessment of both these aspects, an evaluation must be made as to the requirements the project will place on these items. Assessment must be made as to any up-grades required to bring the project on line, what impact the project will have on existing or expanded systems, and anticipated future growth impacts on support systems not only of the project but of other surrounding industry and urban devel-opment

It is the hope of the author that this paper, largely a compilation of observations and opinions built up over 20 years of experience in cold and remote areas may be of some help to others in designing better plants for the future in the north. The north is not as difficult to operate in as the better story tellers make it appear to be. ()n the other hand for 6 months of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut a multi-million dollar plant down at -4n' F with a 4n M.P.H, wind. It only takes one man door improperly latched to freeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later while you are having Christmas dinner, a watchman will call up to report that the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Basic things to remember in plant design for cold and remote areas are: everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore he kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas on the other hand must he adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles for instance have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50° F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze up. People in a remote area are expensive. The capital investment per employee may be as high as $30,000; with fringe benefits per annum costs of an employee will he as high as 812,000 per year regardless of basic wage rate. It

Demand for both lead and zinc to the year 2000 will be characterised by modest to nil growth in mature economies, with positive 3 to 4 per cent annual growth rates in developing nations. Asia and China will feature significantly in this growth. Overall lead demand is expected to grow about 1 per cent a year, with industry becoming more dependent on the fortunes of the automotive industry as the lead-acid battery will be the only major end use to expand. Zinc will become more dependent on its main use, galvanising, as the automotive and construction industries move to high levels of dependence on corrosion prevention. Strong growth in zinc consumption in S.E. Asia, China and India is likely to feature widespread development of the continuous steel strip mini-galvanising line technology. Thank you Mr. Chairman for inviting me to this Conference. As an Australian I am honoured to be here to offer some thoughts about future trends in metal consumption -- with particular reference to the role of countries in my own neighbourhood, the developing Asian nations, including China. It is customary for a member of the producer fraternity to speak to the topic of future development. This is no doubt due to the fact that our companies are so often engaged in endeavours to determine the future prospects of the metals as essential background to massive investment decisions relating to the development of new mines and smelters. This is sometimes also applied in relation to the more painful decision of closures of aging operations. In this paper I have drawn upon recent studies by AM&S into the future of lead and zinc. While this work has been thorough and skillful, we are nonetheless left with uncertainty on a number of counts. Firstly. predictions in the past in our industry have not been all that credible. Need I remind a U.S. audience for instance of the Paley ' investigation setup by President Truman in 1950 to study U.S. copper requirements for 25 years in the future. Asarco's Simon Strauss gave those of us daring to forecast long term commodity trends a salutary reminder that the Paley Commission with all the expertise at its disposal missed the mark in its copper predictions by a very wide margin indeed. Additionally, it is difficult to take comfort from longer term economic forecasts. Too many important economic issues remain unresolved suggesting considerable caution. These include the threat of growing protectionism; low economic growth rates with stubborn unemployment levels; and levels of government expenditure at near saturation as a percentage of GDP, to name a few. However, on a more optimistic note. we can look to China, where there appears to be momentum in its economic growth; oil, where stable oil prices to the mid 1990's will contribute to inflation control; and the fact that LDC debt, while still a major issue, is declining in importance and priority. In the short time allocated to us. I wish to deal succinctly with the lead and zinc raw materials supply picture, which is one I do not believe will hold too many surprises for this audience. Following the review of raw materials supply, we will turn our attention to the changes in the pattern of demand towards the year 2000. emphasising the Asian position. In this context. I would like to focus on the theme of the changes in OECD consumption levels relative to those of the emerging nations. One area we will be paying special attention to is China.

The liberation of intimately disseminated impurities from the coal matrix often demands that the material be ground to a high degree of fineness. Similarly, some technologies for coal utilization require superfine particles (i.e., sizes less than ten microns). This implies additional costs for coal preparation plants due to the high energy and media costs associated with fine grinding operations. Besides, there are problems such as sever product contaminations due to media wear and impairment of the quality of coal. Hence, proper choice of grinding media type is important from the viewpoints of cost reduction and product quality.

A proposal for a modified in situ leaching method for extracting gold from oxidized gold ores using a non-cyanide lixiviant is described. A non-cyanide lixiviant is suggested because of the obvious concerns posed by injecting cyanide-bearing solutions into the subsurface. Oxidized gold ores were chosen as a focus because earlier research on the use of sodium thiosulfate as a lixiviant under anaerobic conditions indicated that the presence of pyrite led to rapid thiosulfate breakdown. A reconnaissance research program involving ore characterization and hydrometallurgical test work on samples from four Australian ore deposits and preliminary reactive transport modeling studies was carried out. This work showed that lixiviant-oxidant combinations of sodium thiosulfate and ferric EDTA and iodide and iodine are both capable of extracting high percentages of accessible gold from the selected samples in bottle roll tests under anaerobic conditions. The ore characterization and reactive transport studies suggested that both physical and chemical methods of permeability enhancement may be required to lift bulk permeability and the availability of gold for dissolution to sufficiently high levels to obtain adequate gold recoveries. Assuming that such methods prove to be both necessary and economically viable, the mining method would no longer be regarded as simple in situ leaching. Therefore, the term ?in-place leaching? has been adopted for the proposed gold extraction system.

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

"Northwestern Pacific submarine seamounts are believed to be future marine mining areas of ferromanganese crusts, which contain hi-tech industrial metals, such as Co, Ni, Te, Ti, Pt, and REEs. The Takuyo No. 5 seamount is a member of the Cretaceous super-plume seamounts in the north Pacific, located within a Japanese EEZ (100 nm from the Minami- Torishima Is. or Marcus Is.), and only 300 nm away from the Japan’s Licensed area for exploration of Co-rich ferromanganese crusts under the ISA. This is an on-going program supported by independent academic communities but not a state-run program or managed by private funding.We have observed, sampled, measured, and analyzed the occurrences, distribution, physical properties, and microbiological environments at a selected flat topped seamount named Takuyo No.5 as a model area for scientific study of ferromanganese crusts within the Japanese EEZ. We then characterized crust structures, composition, age, and growth history, resulting in an understanding of the overall nature and distribution of these deposits from wide range of areas, water depths and geological environments. The study started with a ROV (Hyper-Dolphin 3K of JAMSTEC) exploration jointly with universities and national institutions (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Japan Oil, Gas, and Metal Exploration Corporation, and Geological Survey of Japan) in 2009 using marine geology vessels, remotely-operated vehicle, an oceanbottom drill machine, deep-tow TV camera, as well as conventional dredges and corers. We have been studying the topography, geology, nature of the bottom material of the seamounts using delicate sampling devices and measurement tools, and characterized the distribution patterns of the metal-rich ferromanganese deposits from chemical, mineralogical, and microbiological points of view."

Phase designs are the foundation upon which all open pit mine sequence optimizations and budgets should be built. Unfortunately, at times, mine engineers skip the step of developing realistic pit phase designs - designs that include access ramps and mineable widths. Without mineable phase designs, their optimized schedules are based on theoretical pit shells or ?quick-and-dirty? plans with no ramps. The output from such optimizations is almost always overly optimistic. Without mineable designs, the production estimates are misleading, because they overestimate ore, and underestimate waste stripping requirements. Worse yet, when plans are not based on realistic phase designs, they can point to exactly the wrong decision in feasibility studies (i.e. ?go? when it should be ?no-go?). This paper discusses the importance and features of good pit phase design, and demonstrates the pitfalls of relying on optimized production sequences that are not based on properly designed pit phases.

Organizational development that attempts to simultaneously deal both with training and with job design parameters as they relate to mine health and safety, productivity, and quality of life is one of several areas of research that the Bureau of Mines is pursuing. The Bureau sees potential in this particular effort for reducing accidents and injuries, improving worker satisfaction and health, and increasing productivity.

The Minera Yanacocha operation consists of several heaps interconnected with ponds and gold recovery plants and presents various operating challenges. A comprehensive process model has been developed in order to better understand the effects of certain operating parameters and inventory issues. An integral component of the process water/mass balance is a model of each heap that describes heap behavior based on the individual characteristics of the heap. The heap models are linked to a mass balancing program in order to track flows and concentrations throughout the circuit. A case study of the process heap model is presented for the La Quinua heap, including results for the normal base line operation and several operational problems such as loss of solution flow to the heap (i.e., pump failure), increased flow to a section of the heap (i.e., pond volume control), effect of significant rain events, and impact of a change in material properties (i.e., change in ore type). The impact on heap operating efficiency is discussed with regard to effects on recovery and gold solution grades.

Following an in-depth scenario and strategic planning exercise in 1997, Noranda’s mine production goal was set at 500,000tonnes per year of both copper and zinc metal within five years. There had been no recent discoveries, reserves were shrinking and things had to be done differently and quickly. Change is now continual in our program but here is what we did first: - Combined the exploration and business development groups - Formed teams to search for and respond to opportunity - Made our geologists more business minded and our engineers more optimistic - Went global - Set clear thresholds, farmed out the marginal properties, fast tracked the others - Focussed reconnaissance exploration where we had a clear competitive advantage - Became a “flexible” partner to both juniors and seniors
