Pilot scale flotation tests were conducted with a 1-ft-diam column at the Barrick Resources (USA) Mercur mine, Tooele County, UT, to scavenge unleached (0.01 to 0.018 oz/st) gold values from the tailings of a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit. The optimal recovery was 35 pct of the unamenable-to-leaching gold, at a grade of 0.353 ounces of gold per short ton, using a mixture of dithiophosphate, xanthate, and diesel fuel as a collector. This was achieved by floating approximately 1.6 wt pct of the CIL tailings. The gold values are believed to be contained in arsenic-bearing minerals, attrited carbon, and carbonaceous material in the ore. Redox potentials were measured with a gold electrode during the conditioning stage prior to flotation. The correlation between flotation recovery and redox potential values could be used to control reagent additions. Treatment of a previously leached and weathered tailings material, averaging about 0.055 ounces of gold per short ton, was also investigated using the column. The tailings were first water leached at approximately 600 C, and the water-leached tailings, which contained approximately 0.03 ounces of gold per short ton, were then fed to the column flotation unit. The effects of pH and sodium sulfide addition on gold flotation recovery and redox potentials were examined. maximum gold recovery, 36 pct, was achieved at pH 8.5 with a sodium sulfide addition of 0.18 lb/st.

Mining vehicle manufacturers are developing lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery electric vehicles as an alternative to diesel-powered vehicles. In gassy underground mines, explosion-proof enclosures are commonly used to enclose electrical ignition sources to prevent propagation of an internal methane (CH4)-air explosion to a surrounding explosive atmosphere. Li-ion batteries can create pressurized explosions within sealed enclosures due to thermal runaway. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) measured thermal-runaway pressures of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells as a function of free space within sealed enclosures and observed an inverse power relationship. A well-confined cell produced 4260 psia (294 bar) of pressure during a thermal runaway, far exceeding minimum pressure containment specifications for conventional explosion-proof enclosures. Results indicate that adding enough free space surrounding LFP cells can reduce thermal-runaway pressures to levels below that expected for CH4-air ignitions. Measured thermal-runaway temperatures were below the minimum autoignition temperature of CH4-air.

The Kings Mountain area of North Carolina is the lithium pegmatite center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. We have two spodumene and by-product mineral producing companies, Lithium Corp. of America, and Foote Mineral Company. We also have Kings Mountain Mica and Kings Mountain Silica Companies producing mica. feldspar, quartz and clay from weathered pegmatites in that area. Figure 1 gives the location of the spodumene pegmatite area in North Carolina. The two spodumene producers mine typical pegmatite ore in open pits after removing amphibolite or mica schist overburden which is sold to aggregate producers. The ore reserves are discussed elsewhere in this session. They are in the order of plus 50 million tons but not unlimited. 1.2 The major minerals found and concentrated from the North Carolina spodumene pegmatite ores are tabulated on Table 1.

The Green Mountain Copper Prospect is an unusual stratiform base metal occurrence located in the California Foothills Copper-Zinc Belt. Mined for rich secondary oxide-carbonate ores since 1863, the first serious exploration of the primary ores was in the 1970's. Unlike typical volcanogenic deposits of the district, stratigraphy consists of greywackes overlain (?) or intruded by an intermediate to felsic volcanic unit. Shales and siltstones overlie the volcanic unit. Massive pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur at the top of the volcanic unit. Later intrusion and deformation metamorphosed the sequence and created a SW plunging anticline. Characteristic magnetic and electrical geophysical signatures are present and reviewed.

The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground-water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology and to suggest that an understanding of these principles can help to forestall problems that are internal as regards mining operations and external as regards damage or harm to surrounding areas. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrologic problems. Such internal problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required mining or milling use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by homogeneous rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where rocks are not homogeneous. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground-water occurrence and movement should be helpful to mine operators. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen. Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine, The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and to increase in areal extent when the mine is deepened, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised. The United States is the world's largest producer of hydrofluoric acid (HF), with its 1971 output of 317,000 short tons representing about 40 percent of the estimated Free World production. U. S. production has increased over five fold in the past 20 years, with a growth rate of about 7 percent per year between 1960 and 1970. However, the growth rate to 1977 is expected to be less than 5 percent per year, due primarily to a reduced rate of growth in requirements by the aluminum industry and an expected increase in imports from Canada and Mexico. This discussion will include our analyses of the consumption pattern for HF in 1972 and the factors influencing the demand forecast for 1977.

Stabilization of slopes on abandoned mine land (AML) invariably involves some channelization to control surface drainage. Typically, these channels are lined with riprap or gabions, depending on gradient and expected flow rate. The conventional treatments pose a problem since they require frequent maintenance and replacement at times. Soil bioengineering presents an alternative to the conventional measures. In soil bioengineering, living woody plant material forms the main structural component in systems designed to prevent shallow mass slope failures, surface erosion, and channel bank erosion. An experimental application of soil bioengineering techniques was designed and implemented at an AML site in eastern Kentucky. The design consisted of live fascines and live stakes using willow branches installed with coir geotextile. Channel gradient, length, and cross-section were considered in the design.

Top-down constructed large-diameter (up to 90 m or 300 ft) shaft design and constructability issues present an interesting suite of challenges and opportunities highlighted in this paper. The study covers 2D and 3D finite element models used to analyze various failure modes, evaluate the shaft liner and internal structures' response to seismic loading, assist in segment design and assess final structural design tradeoffs. Efforts to achieve economic advantage over conventional heavy civil practices have prompted innovative solutions for ring and segment design, ring build assembly and annulus backfill grouting. A booster fan is an underground ventilation device installed in the main airstream to handle the total quantity of air circulated to one or more working districts. It is installed in a permanent stopping and equipped with airlock doors, a monitoring system and interlocking devices between the main fan and the booster fan. When adequately installed, a booster fan can be used to reduce the main fan pressure, reduce leakage and decrease the power consumption. However, an inadequate installation can increase the likelihood of mine fies and recirculation of air contaminants. This study identifies hazards associated with the operation and maintenance of booster fans. It analyzes the accompanying risks and recommends control measures to reduce those risks to acceptable levels. The ventilation network of an existing coal mine was updated to include a booster fan. The hazards associated with the operation of this fan were identified, the risks analyzed and the esponse to each failure mode established.

Numerous underground coal mine ventilation seals have been installed in the United States of America prior to 2006 and after implementation of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act. Seal engineering, design, placement, and construction is regulated in industry, but post-construction monitoring of seals is limited to visual inspection of the outby face and seal perimeter, convergence measurement, and atmospheric monitoring. To monitor seal integrity and to provide safe working conditions, a form of non-destructive testing (NDT) is necessary to accurately reflect the health of the seal by detecting post-construction changes, deterioration, or defects within in-situ seals in underground coal mines. Previous research from the National Institute of Safety and Health (NIOSH) has indicated the potential for utilizing ground penetrating radar (GPR) for assessing in-situ mine seals. This paper provides an update to the assessment of proposed NDT methods for seal evaluation using commercially available GPR technologies and systems. Full-scale free-standing seals and large-scale seal specimens were analyzed with an array of GPR units from various manufactures using multiple frequencies.

In this study, several methodologies to manage low grade and often competent portion of the ore have been proposed and tested in lab, pilot and operational scales. Relevant to this subject, the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) has developed Grade Engineering® (GE) concept to modify feed streams by rejecting the low grade and possibly hard components in the stream at the early stages of a value chain. Application of GE requires to understand the impact of the process on the value chain as they are value modifiers on in situ opportunities. Traditional modelling approaches and tools do not have the ability to run the analysis in a block model scale with high fidelity in an integrated value chain. Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES) in conjunction with sophisticated analytical tools such as a neural network (NN) was used to develop and reconcile a fully integrated value chain. The value chain model makes it possible to run all available blocks in the Geomet block model, which could be several millions, under possible scenarios for Grade Engineering for economic evaluation analysis and mine planning.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a simultaneous elutriation and flotation technique for separating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from polyvinylchloride (PVC). The Tuscaloosa Research Center, through a cooperative agreement with a recycling company, devised an elutriation-flotation method for beneficiating the mixed heavy plastics portion of municipal solid wastes which is composed of polystyrene (PS), PET, and PVC. A sodium carbonate brine was used to remove the lighter PS from the heavier PET and PVC. Over 98 pct of the PS was recovered in a high purity PS concentrate containing 99.7 pct PS, The remaining PET and PVC mixture was washed to remove the brine salts that would be harmful to the flotation process. The clean PET and PVC mixture was conditioned in a solution of 45 g/t gelatine and floated in a short (l-m) column flotation cell in an upward flow of water. In a single flotation step, over 75 pct of the PET was recovered in a high purity product containing 99.8 pct PET. The bubbles attached to the PET lowered the effective density of the PET-bubble agglomerate and allowed successful separation of these agglomerates from the PVC plastic pieces. This method separated two-thirds of the mixed plastics fraction into high purity PS and PET products suitable for recycling and left only one-third of the plastics in the mixed plastics product.

"Hecla's Greens Creek silver-gold-lead-zinc mill began using carbon dioxide rather than sulphuric acid to control pH in April, 2015. High pH levels in the grinding and lead flotation circuits are caused by the presence of re-mined cemented paste backfill in mill feed and need to be lowered to achieve good flotation response. Carbon dioxide has proven to be quite effective at controlling pH in the lead circuit with greatly improved pH target attainment. The allowable amount of carbon dioxide used is not limited by effects on lead-zinc selectivity and by poor froth characteristics, as was the case with sulphuric acid. Startup and implementation went smoothly, with few operational issues needing to be resolved. Early results from implementation of the system and its effects on mill performance will be presented. INTRODUCTION Hecla Greens Creek is a silver-gold-lead-zinc mine producing flotation lead and zinc concentrates, as well as a gravity gold concentrate. Besides their base metal contents, both the lead and zinc concentrates carry precious metals. The circuit is largely conventional, with SAG and ball mill grinding being followed by graphite removal preflotation, then conventional lead flotation and conventional zinc flotation. Both rougher concentrates are treated in regrind steps, followed by cleaner flotation. The cleaners tails are treated in an unorthodox bulk circuit to produce a low-grade zinc-lead concentrate marketed to Imperial Process smelters (1). BACKGROUND Backfill and Flotation pH The Greens Creek mine is an underground operation in which mined areas, after ore extraction, are backfilled, using rammed paste or pumped slurry. The backfill consists of mill tailings to which approximately five percent Portland or similar cement is added to enhance its compressive strength. Later mining near backfilled areas inevitably results in a considerable amount of old backfill being mixed with new ore before being shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed is often 20% to 25% and sometimes even higher. Commercial cement, and consequently backfill prepared using it, contains excess lime. Because of this, backfill in mill feed is indistinguishable from the addition of a large amount of lime, so mill natural pHs often range above 10 or even 11. Similar situations have been recognized for many years at mines throughout the world (2)."

INTRODUCTION Previous papers by this author have discussed some of the difficulties involved with optimizing the performance of industrial flotation circuits, e.g. Klimpel (1988, 1989). The two major problems seem to be: 1) the inherent "systems" nature of the froth flotation process which leads to a great deal of self-compensation among the various operating options available and 2) the inherent variations in mineralogy, water chemistry, etc. that always seem to be present in industrial operations. In particular, the influence of reagent dosage has been emphasized in the above referenced work including an industrial system interaction denoted as the R/K trade-off, Klimpel (1984, 1987). Using a simple two parameter model for fitting time - recovery data, Klimpel (1980): [ ] where r is cumulative recovery at time t or at the t th cell, R is the long-term equilibrium recovery and K is the first-order rate of mass removal from the cell (time ), the definition of the R/K trade-off with increasing reagent dosage can be given as follows: at low dosages both R and K increase, at intermediate dosages R continues to increase but K starts to level out, and at high dosages, R may flatten out or still continue to increase but K starts to decrease, sometimes rather quickly. An illustration of this effect in a batch laboratory flotation cell is given in Figure 1. The purpose of this paper is to give a detailed plant illustration of this R/K trade-off phenomena with changing collector dosage which shows just how highly interactive the grindinglflotation system in sulfide mineral processing really is. This is one of about 20 plant level case studies that are being presented and evaluated in an upcoming book, Klimpel (1990). The particular study given here was completed in late 1979 on a copper ore of head grade 0.93% Cu. The frother being used was Dowfroth* 250 at a constant dosage of 0.15 g for each ton of solids feed to the rougher bank and the slurry pH was 10.2. The motivation of the study was to better understand the relationship of changes in feed rate (hence in particle size and state of liberation) with variations in collector dosage (potassium amyl xanthate). The major concern was to determine how much extra economic benefit could be gained by better utilizing the existing grinding mills and rougher bank consisting of eight identical cells. The remainder of the flotation circuit was also studied, including regrinding of rougher tails, but did not prove as critical as the rougher bank operation itself. It appeared from an overall economic viewpoint, the battle was being won or lost in the manner in which the rougher bank was being operated. This was not to minimize the roles of the scavenging and cleaning circuits but those portions of this particular circuit could be rather obviously operated to achieve maximum benefit given the specific output of the rougher bank. A special attempt was made to maintain constant ore type throughout the entire test program. Eight specific test conditions were evaluated including three different feed rates (and hence three different size distributions) to flotation. Tables 1 and 2 summarize the eight test conditions and overall recovery results at the end of the rougher bank for each test. A single test consisted of at least three consecutive eight-hour shifts operating at steady-state with composite cell lip samples taken over the final eight-hour shift. The wide use of bulk ANFO in surface coal mines is questionable in our energy conscious environment. At many locations, bulk ANFO is not the proper economic selection. Water conditions, energy requirements, waste and spillage, and vibration control are factors too often overlooked in the proper choice of blasting agents. Cost savings over 20% have been realized by converting bulk ANFO to packaged blasting agents. Future trends suggest greater concern for energy conservation in blasting will limit bulk ANFO applications and promote packaged products where quality can be maximized, waste and spillage eliminated, and water compatibility in wet areas assured.

Bauxite, dolomite, and magnesite are natural occurring minerals that are used extensively in the manufacture of refractory products. In addition, magnesia produced from seawater or brine finds its way into the production of refractories. All of these materials must be processed at high temperatures, 1500°C to 2200°C, to produce an intermediate raw material (refractory grain) , which can then be used in the final manufacture of refractory bricks and shapes. During the last 20 years, the major supply of refractory bauxite has been from Guyana, and at times the annual production has ranged up to 1,000,000 tons per year. More recently, China has become a major source of refractory grade bauxite by supplying over 300,000 TPY. Other sources of bauxite in lesser quantities have been Surinam, Brazil, and the U.S.A. During 1980, the estimated available world tonnage amounted to slightly more than 1,300,000 tons. The bulk of this material has been calcined in rotary kilns except for some of the Chinese production, which was treated in shaft kilns. Recent work has indicated that an excellent product can be produced in the Nichols Shaft Kiln using much less fuel than the conventional rotary kiln. Details of the Nichols Shaft Kiln will be provided later in this paper.

Henderson Mine has been transporting molybdenum ore using a rail haulage system for the past 21 years. Due to the age of this system, limited performance, and obsolescence, a capital investment decision was imminent. Henderson used this opportunity to evaluate other transportation methods and continuously improve their mining practices. These efforts resulted in a new mine plan for Henderson, which ensures that Henderson will continue to supply high quality molybdenum into the 21st century. This paper will discuss the dramatic changes taking place at the Henderson Mine as a new production level is mined. These changes include the installation of an underground crushing, conveying, and truck haulage system, as well as increasing the scale of the panel caving process. Each of these topics will be discussed, as will their rock mechanics and material flow implications.

In a recently completed research project for the U.S. Bureau of Mines - Twin Cities Research Center, a computerized costing procedure for uranium in situ leach mining was developed by the NUS Corporation. This costing procedure, termed a cost model, employs a process engineering approach for estimating total project costs as well as equipment and manpower requirements for uranium in situ leaching operations in either Texas or Wyoming. 80th capital and operating costs are generated by the model along with the overall production cost/pound U3O8 subject to a known rate of return. Conversely, rate of return on equity can be solved for, subject to a given price of yellowcake. During the course of the research effort, this cost model was applied 50 typical site conditions in Texas and Wyoming. Sensitivity rests were conducted for numerous key parameters to determine the cost influence attributable to incremental changes In parameter values. The results of these sensitivity tests along with a description of the in situ leaching cost model have been documented as Bureau of Mines, Mineral Research Contract Report No. J019912, "Cost and Sensitivities Analysis for Uranium In Situ Leach Mining," dated March 1981.

The White River Shale Oil Corporation (WRSOC), as agent for Phillips Petroleum Company, Sohio Shale Oil Company, and Sun Shale Oil Company, is developing a prototype oil shale facility on Federal Lease Tracts Ua and Ub, located in northeastern Utah and known as the White River Shale Project (WRSP). The Ralph M. Parsons Company (Parsons) has been retained as the design engineer/constructor for the project. This paper covers the successful pregrouting of the Bird's Nest Aquifer in conjunction with the sinking of a 9.2-m (30-ft)-diameter shaft and driving of a 3.89-m by 5.64-m (18.5-ft by 12.75-ft) decline. The Bird's Nest Aquifer derives its name from the ellipsidal solution cavities caused by leaching of random-size nacholite nodules. The sodium bicarbonate nodules occur as persistent bands within a matrix of siltstone and marlstone. The team, made up of the owner, engineer/contractor, and subcontractor successfully grouted the shaft down to an inflow of less than 0.06 lps (1 gmp) and the decline down to less than 0.12 lps (2 gpm) by injecting a total of 213.190 kg (470,000 lb) of Celtite Terraseal, 113,400 kg (250,000 lb) of limestone dust, and 41,730 kg (92,000 lb) of cement into the formation.

The knowledge concerning the lubrication of open gearing for mining machinery has contained many unknowns and at its best has relied to a great degree on a "Rule of Thumb" procedure. It will be within the scope of this paper to explain what we have learned to date and what must be learned in the future. The results in the lubrication of open gearing have spanned the spectrum of unsatisfactory to satisfactory. With the advent of larger mining machinery, we are faced with the necessity of a more thorough knowledge of open gear lubrication. We have avail- able, better steels for the gearing, advanced technology and machinery for cutting proper tooth profiles, and better means of aligning the teeth in the gear train. This has made it possible to transmit more horsepower through the same size gear set than ever before, if we have the proper lubrication to complement the factors previously mentioned. We have set up computer programs which can calculate the data fox the tooth forms, the correct operating center distances, the contact stresses, the bending stresses, and the PVT factor of the gear teeth. This program does not, at the present, have sufficient data available to calculate the type of lubricant which should be used.
