Dravo Corporation was founded in 1891 and has long been recognized as a major domestic engineering and construction firm headquartered in Pittsburgh. In 1977, Dravo had revenue of $852.2 million with international business activities contributing $248 million; quite a different picture than envisioned at the turn of the century. Engineering and construction activities still dominate Dravo's most recent history and will do so for the immediate future. However, fluctuations in capital spending by large industrial sectors of our economy during the late sixties were affecting Dravo's planning for continued growth along its traditional lines of business. Diversification was a possible solution to smooth out the upward trend in corporate earnings. One large result of these continuing efforts was the formation of Dravo Lime Company, a vertically integrated, proprietary chemical supplier for the air pollution control market. Briefly retracing the seventies, the passage of the Federal "Clean Air Act" in 1970 supplied the impetus for Dravo Lime Company. This law promulgated limits on the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from large stationary sources that would affect local air quality. The major industry that felt the brunt of this regulation was the electric utility industry, especially those generating electricity with coal-fired boilers. The law hastened the development of a new industry, flue gas desulfurization (FGD), and is composed of three major segments: (1) the electric utility, (2) the FGD equipment suppliers (the scrubbing modules), and (3) the scrubbing chemical suppliers. Dravo's experience suggested the equipment end of the business but market analysis indicated that our long range corporate goals could be better attained by investigating the chemical processes involved in the removal of the SO, gas. The result being Dravo Lime Company. This paper will briefly describe the Thiosorbic lime scrubbing process and review our innovative mine and calcining facility.

Conventional iron ore balling circuits exhibit undesirable surging behavior which is known to result from uncontrolled occurrence of the mechanisms of nucleation, coalescence and layering. This study was undertaken to investigate the mechanism of pellet growth by layering. Several laboratory experiments have been carried out to delineate the effect of feed moisture content and feed quantity. This paper presents an analysis of the experimental results and a simple model to describe the layering process.

Compacted clays are used as permeability barriers in many mineral engineering projects such as heap leaching, containment ponds, tailings disposal and earth dams. Source materials used for clay liners include a wide variety of sand, silt and clay admixtures that exhibit dramatically different engineering properties when densified. The permeability and plastic properties of fine-grained soils are reviewed with respect to the state of compaction as the water content varies. Be-cause they are weak in tension, compacted clays are susceptible to cracking when subjected to differential flexural movements. Designs of compacted clay liners must include an evaluation of their flexibility which is the ability of a fine-grain soil to bend plastically without cracking. This paper will also discuss the importance of flexibility with respect to soil types, compaction effort, failure mechanism and testing evaluation to the performance of clay liners in preventing seepage of pollutants from a containment site.

Most iron bearing ores treated by the R=N Direct Reduction Process yield products lower in phosphorus than the initial ores. The sulfur is also removed and generally is in the range of 0.02 to 0.05 percent in the final R=N product, independent of the sulfur content of both the ore and carbon fuel used. The mechanism and thermodynamic justification of the principal reactions leading to the removal of both phosphorus and sulfur and the control of sulfur in the iron concentrate produced are discussed and supported by the results of laboratory experiments. In substantially all iron ores (containing up to 4% sulfur as sulfate) and solid carbon fuels (containing sulfur from 1 to 8%) tested, the rejection of sulfur has been in the order of 90-95%, with not more than 0.02 0.05% sulfur in the final metallic iron product. With respect to phosphorus-bearing iron ores ranging up to 0.70% P205, the rejection to tailings has been in the order of 70-95%, resulting in not more than 0.03 - 0.07% phosphorus in the final product.

OUTLOOK FOR COAL UTILIZATION In 1975, about 650 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite mined in the United States was used to meet 55% of the primary energy input for electric power generation and 26% of the total industrial consumption.1 Even though this amounts to only 21% of the total energy requirements, it is believed that with the declining natural gas resources and uncertainty of liquid fuel imports, coal will assume a more dominant role in suppplying our future energy needs. A regional breakdown of the coal reserves of the United States along with their characteristics is shown in Table I. At present the United Stares Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) and the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) are financing extensive research programs in advanced mining methods and energy conversion processes. The increased demand for wal which may result from these research programs may also create large-scale environmental protection problems. As more and more coal is mined the production of undesirable coal fines and dust also increases proportionally. The USBM and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) research in this field includes development in the areas of instrumentation for qualitative and quantitative analysis of wal dust, protective devices, and dust collectors. Dust control by water sprays, steam, and foam are also being investigated. Other aspects of safety in mining include developing methane drainage techniques prior to coal mining, fire and explosion prevention, and neutralization and disposal of acid mine waters. It is the belief of coal technologists that when the emphasis shifts to coal as the primary source of energy. the existing methods of mining and preparation of coal must be improved considerably to supply large quantities of quality coal for energy conversion. It is the objective of the present large-scale research financed by ERDA to produce substitute fuels from coal. Large-scale gasification pilot plants are being constructed by Bituminous Coal Research, Consolidation Coal Co., Institute of Gas Technology, and the Pittsburgh Energy Research Center to produce coal gas of natural gas standards at 1,000 psig. The processes being adopted by these pilot plants are oriented towards recovering most of the sulfur from coal by absorbing H2S and its subsequent conversion to elemental sulfur. The environmental protection standards will be strictly followed in using the results of these pilot plants to construct large-scale coal gasification plants in the latter part of the 1970's. With the increasing awareness of the need for air pollution control, considerable research is being done to minimize sulfur dioxide emission from thermal power plants. Utilization of limestone and dolomite scrubbing systems and caustic treatment of stack gases have proved to reduce sulfur and nitric oxide emissions by about 90 to 96%.3 Currently, about 22 scrubbers are in use in the United States to reduce sulfur in stack gas emission. In the long-term, it appears that optimal combinations will be developed involving both advanced coal preparation technology and wet scrubbing. The sulfur compounds are converted either to elemental sulfur of sulfuric acid. Besides the sulfur compounds, the major byproduct of the coal utilization industry is the large amount of coal ash. The Coal Research Bureau at West Virginia University has developed a practical use for coal ash as a structural material. The coal industry will undergo revolutionary changes when coal becomes the primary source of energy. New coal mining and preparation processes will be introduced to meet the ever-increasing per capita energy requirements. 2. BENEFICATION Introduction Coal preparation, like the beneficiation of ores, is also aimed at the separation of values from associated waste. Even though the unit operations involved when enriching ores and coal are similar, there are certain characteristics unique to coal preparation. Unlike the scattered and concentrated veins of underground minera1 ores, coal is distributed uniformly and very much in abundance in the coal mines. Coal occurs as the metamorphosed sedimentary deposits of vegetable matter, while metal and mineral deposits occur in great varieties of forms, structures, and origin-from igneous to sedimentary and metamorphic. The mined coal, being much more friable than mineral ores, is subjected to less intensive size reduction operations. Ores are usually ground to a very fine size for subsequent concentration, while coal is crushed to a coarser size, since considerably less liberation is needed to achieve the desired degree of separation. Since mineral matter is to a great extent discretely distributed in coal, concentration is mainly achieved by taking advantage of differences in specific gravity between clean coal and associated waste. In general, about 90% of coal is concentrated using specific gravity separation and about 10% by froth flotation. In contrast, these operations are frequently reversed in the beneficiation of ores. In coal preparation almost all fractions separated during various stages are made use of. while large amounts of gangue material are rejected in the concentration of ores. Hence, coal generally has a much lower ratio of concentration than ores. Since ore deposits are frequently more variable and mineralogically complex than coal, beneficiation of ore may require more plant flexibility and point-to-point quality control. This characteristic difference between the mineral ores and coal is attributed to the generally used one-step processing in coal as compared to the multiple-step processing of ores. Dewatering to enhance the energy content of coal is usually considered a major unit operation. Even though thickening and filtration are common for dewatering ore concentrates and cleaned coal, vibrating centrifuges and disk filters find unique application in the coal industry for achieving these types of solid-fluid separation. In coal preparation, thermal drying is carried out in separate units at the mine. While ore concentrates are usually dried at the smelter. Although the drying of ores is seldom considered dangerous, volatile matter and combustible dust are reasons why the thermal drying of coal can be hazardous. Open air storage of ores and mined coal results in partial oxidation. Unlike the oxidation of ores, the oxidation of the pyritic and carbonaceous constituents of coal together with the heat of condensation of moisture contribute to spontaneous heating and the subsequent combustion of coal in storage. Among the other significant difference between concentration of ores and coal are the weight and capacity of processing equipment. Coal processing employs less cumbersome, higher capacity units while the beneficiation of ores usually requires much more massive and frequently lower capacity equipment. Properties of Coal Which Influence Design The widely varying and heterogeneous composition of coal, due to metamorphism, determines the preparation design and uses of the resulting products. The Kennecott Ridgeway Mine in South Carolina is scheduled to complete mining and ore processing in the last quarter of 1999. Tailings are disposed in a 300 acre, lined tailings impoundment. To facilitate closure and reclamation, modification of the tailings impoundment operation has been adopted. Mining involved the sequenced development of two open pits. In 1996 mining of the South Pit was completed and backfilling of the pit with waste rock from the North Pit was initiated and will continue until mining ceases. Both pits will be reclaimed as fresh water lakes. This paper presents the physical, geochemical and hydrogeochemical evaluation of the operational and post operational management of the project. Comparison of the operational monitoring data against predicted performance is reviewed.

The eighties are likely to witness the first commercial-size coal-to-gasoline plant(s) in the U.S., although uncertainty regarding crude prices and cautious involvement of the Federal Government in the synfuels development are evident. The formation of The U.S. Synthetic Fuels Corporation with passage of the Energy Security Act is projected to pave the way for some of the projects on a moderate scale. The corporate objectives (1) are to provide funds for supporting a number of feasibility studies and loan guarantees for the construction of at least some commercial-size plants and the possibility of product price supports or purchase commitments. There are a number of coal conversion processes (2) currently under evaluation for producing either gaseous or liquid plus gaseous fuels, the other processes such as SRC I are for producing desulfurized deashed clean solid fuel for commercial use.

Four different types of fire suppression systems were evaluated in large-scale fire experiments to study the effect of air velocity on the effectiveness to extinguish conveyor belt fires. The four different types of suppression systems were water sprinkler, deluge type water spray, and two different dry chemical fire suppression systems. The large-scale fire tests were conducted with 72-in-wide fire resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G Flame Test). Each fire suppression system was tested at air velocities of 500-550 feet per minute (fpm) and 1350-1500 fpm. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each fire suppression system. Both of the water-based fire suppression systems were able to suppress the fire to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire extinguisher. However, the amount of water needed to suppress the fire to the point where a miner could walk up to extinguish any smoldering belting was greater than the current MSHA regulations require. MSHA regulations only require 10 minutes of water supply to the suppression system. In the test set up neither of these systems would have suppressed the fire had the water been turned off to the system after 10 minutes. The dry chemical suppression systems produced mixed results. Dry chemical suppression system A did not suppress the conveyor belt fire at either air velocity. Dry chemical system B suppressed the fire at 500 fpm air velocity, but produced mixed results at the higher air velocity. Details are presented on the large-scale fire test set-up, arrangement of the fire suppression systems, and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity on fire suppression system design and performance. Mine development has evolved in the past 15 years from a human-paced system using hand-held drills and track-bound equipment to a mechanized system using specialized equipment for each component of the development cycle. In most Canadian hard-rock mines, face advance is achieved by the following sequential activities: drilling, explosive loading, mucking and ground support. The state-of-the-art for each work element is reviewed and methods for performance estimates proposed. The entire development system and its production capabilities are considered based on equipment reliabilities, spare units, haulage distances, and muck bay spacing. The effect of the number of working faces on the system's performance will also be analyzed. Manuscript not received in time for publication.

The paper presents project overviews and building information modeling (BIM) execution and focuses on modeling techniques, software utilization, data management strategies and how the digital models helped the design-build team mitigate impacts to schedule by identifying clashes between disciplines before the execution of work. Finally, it demonstrates the positive and transformative impact of digital engineering on the design and construction of large underground infrastructure projects and highlights its role in asset management throughout the project lifecycle.

Galvanic contact, occurring between electricall y conducting minerals in flotation pulps, may affect the nature of mineral surfaces and influence their floatabilities. Rest potential and galvanic current measurements were made on an electrode combination of pyrite and pyrrhotite under nitrogen, air and oxygen aeration conditions, and the results were correlated with their oxygen-consuming characteristics and flotation behaviors. The galvanic contact improved the floatability of pyrrhotite, but adversely affected that of pyrite. Auger electron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the formation of hydroxide or oxide and sulfate species of iron on pyrrhotite decreased whereas that on pyrite increased when these minerals were held in contact. An electrochemical mechanism was proposed for the observed behaviors.

An underground limestone mine in eastern Ohio was experiencing significant floor heave and roof falls, attributed to high horizontal stresses. Areas of the mine showing floor heave were monitored with roof-to-floor extensometers and photogrammetry surveys to determine the rate and magnitude of heave. Extensometer data were recorded hourly at four locations across adjacent entries while photogrammetry surveys of the floor were performed at the same locations every two to five weeks. A final survey was performed using an I-Site 8200 laser scanner. Following instrumentation, floor heave up to 10.1 cm (4 in.) was measured by the extensometers, photogrammetric reconstructions and laser scanner over a six-month period. The extensometers were biased by the location where they were placed, failing to consistently capture the location and extent of floor heave and cracking. The photogrammetry surveys were not precise enough to capture small magnitude movements. Mining in the area was halted and within several months the floor movement and incidence of roof falls were significantly lessened.

The Eskay Creek Mine, a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia started operations in late 1994. For the first three years of operation, ore was crushed to minus 2 inch; blended to satisfy smelter terms and direct shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Before commencing the above operations, preliminary evaluations had indicated that an extremely complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. Subsequently markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations, at a nominal production rate of 300 tonnes per day, were commenced. Exploration diamond drilling in 1995 and 1996 discovered additional lower grade mineralized zones, which are less economic or uneconomic as direct shipping ore. Testwork demonstrated that these lower grade zones could be upgraded to marketable concentrates in a simple flotation mill. The mill was built in 1997 and has been in operation since late 1997. The mining rate now has increased to 400 tonnes per day including 250 tonnes per day of the direct shipping ore and ISO tonnes per day of the mill ore. Prime Resources Group Inc. wholly owns the Eskay Creek Mine. Homestake Canada Inc. owns 50.6% of Prime's shares and manages and operates the mine on Prime's behalf. This paper discusses the mining and milling operations as well as ore shipment and smelter contracts' administration.

The discovery of the gold deposits of the Jerritt Canyon district and the construction of the E. R. Bell Mine is one of the significant mining developments in the United States during the past ten years. This mine will exploit one of the larger deposits of disseminated gold presently known, with proven, recoverable reserves in excess of 67.6 million grams of gold. Interest generated by the success of this project has contributed greatly to the tremendous resurgence in exploration for disseminated gold deposits in Nevada and throughout the west. The Jerritt Canyon project, including the Bell Mine, is a 70/30 joint venture between Freeport Gold Company and FMC Gold Incorporated, both of which are wholly owned affiliates of the respective parent companies, Freeport-McMoRan, Inc. and FMC Incorporated. Under the terms of the joint venture agreement, Freeport Exploration Company, another Freeport-McMoRan affiliate, manages the exploration and pre-mine development. Drilling, design, construction and management of the Bell Mine are provided by Freeport Gold Company.

"In the application of the BIOX® technology, high tailings grade (2-16 g/t) may be generated with a decrease in overall gold recovery, which sometimes make it economically unattractive. This paper investigated the causes of the high tailings grade by using samples from the Bogoso BIOX plant. Partial chemical analysis, diagnostic tests and cyanidation optimisation studies were conducted to invoke understanding into the high tailings grades. Diagnostic study on the tailings showed 48.34% of gold in carbonaceous matter, 17.12% in quartz, 13.40% as liberated gold, 11.51% imbedded in sulphides and the remaining 9.65% in carbonates. Optimum cyanidation recovery of 90.4% was established for the BIOX concentrate at 7 kg/t NaCN, 40-50 g/L activated carbon and residence time of 40 hours. The recovery was sensitive to carbon and cyanide concentrations but additional cyanide was not economical. High preg-robbing indices of 72.7% and 64.4% were recorded for the BIOX product and the flotation concentrate respectively. This confirms the inability of the BIOX process to deactivate carbonaceous matter, which remains a serious precursor for low overall gold recoveries and high CIL tailings. INTRODUCTION Gold ores may be broadly classified as refractory and non-refractory. Non-refractory ores are easy to treat but refractory materials require complicated flowsheets for metal extraction (Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001; Marsden and House, 2006). As near surface non-refractory gold deposits are getting depleted, the increasing price of gold and increasing demand for gold, have encouraged many gold producing companies to treat refractory ores for gold recovery. The refractory behaviour of these ores may be due to the presence of sulphides, tellurides, cyanicides and/or carbonaceous matter. Refractory ores do not respond well to conventional cyanidation as the gold is either occluded by or in solid solution in sulphides, or is in association with cyanicides (Marsden and House, 2006). Further, carbonaceous matter preg-robs gold during leaching (Osseo-Asare et al, 1984; Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001). The two major causes of refractoriness are the presence of sulphides and carbonaceous matter, and these render the ore double refractory (Nyavor and Egiebor, 1992). Oxidative pre-treatment processes such as high pressure leaching/oxidation; biological oxidation, ultra-fine grinding and roasting are required to render refractory ores amenable to conventional cyanidation (Marsden and House, 2006). Biological oxidation, however, has become the preferred pre-treatment route because it is more environmentally friendly and convenient even where only partial oxidation is required. Comparative tests have demonstrated that bioleaching can achieve the same or better results than roasting or pressure leaching in terms of gold recovery (Yannopoulos, 1991; Brierley, 1997). Further, biological treatment processes are more cost-effective, environmentally friendly and safer."

Understanding the energy-size reduction relationship is vital to grinding process; therefore, this paper aims to show the energy-size reduction of magnetite-calcite binary mixture in a laboratory wet conical ball mill. Single magnetite, single calcite, and blended magnetite-calcite mixture at three weight ratios in four particle sizes were ground in a laboratory wet conical ball mill at four grinding time periods. The results showed that the particle size distribution of both fine particles and coarse particles of single and mixture ground product fitted well with the PSD computed by Rosin–Rammler-Benne function. The larger mass percentage of calcite is, the higher t10 of binary mixture ground product is. On the contrary, t10 in the mixture decreases as the percentage of magnetite in the mixture increases. The different breakage behaviors in blended samples are due to the hardness and particle size. The results of calculated ratio of energy absorption factor showed that the calcite consumed more energy in the breakage process of binary mixture than ground alone. The JK size-dependent breakage model based on the t10 method fits all the experiment data, be it generated from pure minerals, mixtures at different weight ratios, or each component separated from the mixture.

This paper discusses the replacement of AEROFLOAT ® 1 25 promoter by AERO ® 5688 promoter at Sonora Mining Corp.'s California Mother Lode concentrator. Flotation concentrate is trucked 120 miles to a leach plant in Nevada, so the reduced mass resulting from higher gold grades and reduced talceous gangue and barren pyrite resulting from this change in promoters has brought about a major decrease in shipping costs. Preliminary laboratory testing indicated that free milling gold and controlled amounts of pyrite could be floated using Aero 5688 promoter with reduced dosages of Aero 350 xanthate.2 Extensive plant trials confirmed that the new reagent suite could indeed maintain gold recoveries while reducing total mass. Improved froth characteristics also improved operating flexibility in treating various ore types, and overall reagent costs have been reduced.

The Golden Sunlight Mine started full-scale operations in February 1983, with a conventional open-pit mine supplying 4464 tonnes (5000 tons) per day of milling ore. After crushing and grinding, the ore is leached with cyanide solution in large agitation tanks. Soluble gold values are removed from the sand portion of the leached ore with five stages of countercurrent washing cyclones. After thickening of the cyclone-wash overflow slurry, the gold is recovered in activated carbon with a six-stage carbon-in-pulp circuit and a five-stage upflow carbon column circuit. Pressure stripping, carbon reactivation, electro-winning and refining complete the gold recovery process.

"Virtually every article you read on safety has a statement to the effect: “It’s obvious that safety pays”. If it is so obvious, why is it so hard to answer these questions? • How does the Maintenance or Operations Manager convince the Plant Manager to spend money from the annual budget for safety improvements? • How does the Plant Manager influence Corporate to prioritize safety improvements? • How does an engineering firm persuade the owner to spend more on design and equipment up front to reduce risk? There are many cultural and structural reasons why it is so difficult to prove the obvious. In my opinion the main culprits are: the almost universally used ‘Low Bid’ process, variations in reporting incident statistics between industries and countries, and, the Generally Accepted Accounting procedures (GAAP) [or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)]. Conventional wisdom is it’s smart not to spend more than you need to meet the minimum regulations and maximize production. But buying on price alone often harms people, degrades the environment, and reduces the company’s bottom line. How can this be? You met the minimum safety requirements and saved money by buying on price. Don’t those savings go right to the bottom line? When you buy on price you get minimum quality, minimum compliance and are often backed corner with no reasonable options to rectify the problems that arise from buying on price instead of buying on long term life cycle cost. Culturally few companies actually ‘walk the talk’. It is trendy to have giant billboards at plant entrances proclaiming world class compliance with quality and safety standards. Annual reports are embellished with safety slogans and sustainability statements. Behind the front gates and the glossy annual reports the message is clear: produce or be replaced. Only a few companies go beyond the window dressing and actually endorse, from the top down, continuously improving their safety culture. Those that do embrace safety, show significant performance advantages over their competition that are reflected in their safety, productivity and environmental records and, ultimately their financial statements and share price. Current accounting (and reward) systems make it unlikely financial managers will accept non-conventional approaches to justifying expenditures on safety because they are driven to report “hard” numbers that can be documented and are within the “GAAP or IFRS Rules.” But in reality, accountants quantify soft or intangible costs all the time in their financial statements. Justifying safety investments is greatly enhanced by quantifying what most financial managers would call intangible costs. Government agencies have no problem assigning intangible costs to justify regulations to improve safety. How many times have you heard that the regulation is justified because the cost to industry is X while the benefit to the society is 2 or 3X? How can they say that without including intangible costs?
