In 1925, Niggli (1925, pp, 1-69), formulated a physico-chemical, explanation for the origin of hydrothermal ore deposits, from a concept that had appeared earlier in the literature in the writings of Von Groddeck, Stelzner, Beck, de Launay, Kemp, and Lindgren. Niggli proposed that pressure at depth could force volatiles from deep-seated magmas. The volatiles would In turn form pegmatites and then ore deposits as the fluids cooled. This is one view of a general theory of ore genesis that gained secondancy for years among such prominent geologists as Fenner (1926, p, 697) and Emmons (1936, pp. 29-70). It was, proposed that ore deposits were precipitated from solutions or fluids that had escaped or been separated from a deep-seated magma by means of liquid immiscibility or crystallization or gas transfer. This theory is based on the presence of igneous rocks close in space and age to hydrothermal ore deposits in many mining districts of the world. As is well known, there are many ore deposits apparently of hydrothermal origin that are neither spatially nor chronologically related to igneous rocks, In still other localities where there are no hydrothermal ore deposits, igneous rocks occur that are similar in composition to those in mining districts. In view of such facts, the applicability of the Niggli theory to all hydrothermal ore deposits may well be questioned. The chief purpose of this paper is to test the Niggli theory by studying the primary petrology, hydrothermal alteration, and distribution of copper and zinc in silicic igneous plutons supposedly genetically related (in the Niggli sense) to nearby hydrothermal ore deposits, Silicic Tertiary plutons in three New Mexico mining districts were chosen, the Hanover-Fierro intrusive at Hanover and Fierro, the Granite Mountain pluton at Magdalena, and the four outliers of the Lordsburg stock at Lordsburg. First, it had to be established whether the observed plutons were or were not the source of the adjacent ore deposits. This was done by studying the relation between the copper or zinc distribution-and the primary or secondary features in the plutons studied, and the time relations between instrusion and ore deposition. Primary igneous features of a pluton are defined as the minerals, texture, shape, and character of the pluton which were formed prior to the complete solidification of the rock, secondary features include all changes that took place in a pluton after solidification. They are identified by their cross cutting nature or as replacing primary minerals, Under the Niggli concept, it is proved that the ore ions did not originate from the parts of the pluton now visible as immediately adjacent to the ore deposits; it must then be established, if possible', that the ore ions were separated from deeper parts of the intrusive, Some idea as to whether the copper or zinc ions originated from a related magma at depth may be gained by a comparison between the primary (that is, pre-alteration) zinc and copper abundances found in ore localizing intrusive studied and the average abundances for copper and zinc in silicic igneous rocks most recently given in the literature. Finally, the relation between ore deposition and hydrothermal alteration was studied on a regional as well as on a local scale.

Recycling of such municipal solid wastes as glass containers, metal cans, and newspapers has received increasing attention recently. However, municipal solid wastes account for only 1% of the total solid waste stream in the United States. The remainder includes hazardous and non-hazardous industrial wastes. Generators of industrial wastes are facing higher landfill costs. Future liability potential, and public image concerns which are forcing them to seek innovative and often profitable solutions to minimize, reuse, and recycle their waste streams. Opportunities for the mining industry in industrial recycling include recovery of mining wastes and by-products, and utilization of mineral products for treating waste streams.

The Alligator Ridge Mine is located 70 miles northwest of Ely in White Pine County, Nevada. Development of the mine began in the late 1970's as a joint venture between Amselco Minerals, Inc. and Occidental Minerals Corporation, with Amselco as the operating partner. Early in 1983 Nerco Minerals Company acquired Occidental's share of the property. The mine and ore processing facility have operated at capacity since 1981 producing 680,000 tonnes of ore and 1,900 kg of gold per year. The gold ore deposits at Alligator Ridge consist of disseminated micron-size gold particles in a silicified siltstone matrix. The deposit comprises three separate but adjacent areas of mineralization that are designated as Vantage 1, Vantage 2, and Vantage 3 after the name of the basin in which the deposits lie.

Performance of mineral filler particles in ceramic applications can be enhanced markedly by adsorbing polymers of optimum molecular structure and dosage. In a recent work by Chen and Somasundaran (1997), a novel scheme of controlled polymer adsorption was used to produce nanocomposites of unique core-shell designs. Towards this purpose, adsorption and desorption behavior of selected polyacrylic acids (PAA) on three minerals; alumina, titania, and silicon carbide, was examined as a function of relevant parameters. Adsorption of P AA was found to depend on polymer molecular weight, pH, as well as solids loading. Specifically, the adsorption density was found to increase with increase in polymer molecular weight for non-porous alumina while it was found to decrease in the case of porous alumina. This is attributed to the inaccessibility of the pores to the larger polymers. An unexpected finding was the change in the adsorption density of PAA with solids loadings. PAA adsorbs on silicon carbide only at low pH values when the particles have very low surface charge suggesting that the adsorption in this case is controlled by electrostatic forces. Using polyacrylic acid as bridging agent between the alumina fillers (core) and nanosize alumina or titania particles (shells), controlled layer by layer deposition of nanoparticle on the core particle surface could be obtained.

Yield pillar-based gate road designs oftentimes fail to provide mine operators with adequate ground control because of the unknowing misemployment of "critically" sized pillars. A "critical" pillar is one that is too large to either yield nonviolently or yield before the roof and floor sustain permanent damage, but is too small to support full abutment loads. To demonstrate the critical pillar concept, a field study of a tapering gate road was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Sunnyside Coal Mines, Sunnyside, UT. Extreme pillar stresses and associated coal bumps characterize the response to first panel mining of a 16.8-m wide critical design. Significantly lower pillar stresses, early yielding of the pillar and adjacent panel rib, and an absence of coal bumps suggest that a narrower 12.2-m-wide design more closely approaches proper yield pillar dimensions. Probehole drilling of several 1 O.6-m-wide pillars revealed low stress levels and substantial pillar and panel rib yielding prior to abutment onset, indicating a properly functioning yield pillar design.

This paper presents a new algorithm for solving the Controlled Flow Mine Ventilation Problem in an optimal manner - minimum power consumption. The use of booster fans and restrictions on the locations of ventilation regulators are dealt with in a straightforward manner. This new approach is based on a common Operations Research algorithm for which there are many fast computer programs available.

An exchange of coal mine specialists was made with the USSR under an "Agreement on Exchanges and Cooperation in Scientific, Technical, Cultural, and other Fields for 1972-73," which was signed by President Nixon and Chairman Breshnev on April 11, 1972.* This exchange, in the field of coal mine safety and scientific research in hazard control technologies, was one of 16 technical exchanges covered under the above agreement. A six-man USA delegation visited the Soviet Union from September 9 to September 21, 1973. The delegation visited four deep mines, three in the Donets Basin and one in the Moscow Basin, a State Safety Research Institute, a Mine Research Station and associated Research and Design Institute, two Research and Design mining equipment institutes, and a Trade Union-sponsored health sanitarium. In Moscow, the delegation received a briefing on the Soviet coal industry from First Deputy Minister Vladimir Fedanov. A similar briefing was given to us on the Donets coal basin by the Deputy Minister S. Saratikyanz of the Ukrainian Coal Ministry. Lengthy technical discussions were held with the mines staff and research personnel at the institutes we visited. In addition, we had detailed discussions with key staff members of two combinats "Donetskugol" and "Tulaugol." In all these meetings, principal topics were matters of safety related to hazards associated with face mechanization, coal transport, methane gas control measures, gas outbursts, coal and rock outbursts, fire fighting add control, explosion suppression and control measures and other related hazard factors. There was also much discussion on miner training, miner's attitudes toward safety and accident prevention practices, and preparation and enforcement of safety rules and regulations. The delegation was very warmly received and constant attention was given to our needs. Our numerous questions were answered with candor although quite often in not as much detail as we would have liked.

The efficient and effective utilization of hydraulic excavators relies on, among other factors, a better understanding of the formation resistance during the excavation process. Studies on hydraulic shovel excavators have focused on optimizing the digging process by considering the reaction of the boom, stick and bucket, and analyzing the resulting moments at the shovel’s front-end joints. These studies failed to understand resistive forces from a statistical viewpoint. The purpose of this paper is to develop machine-learning models capable of predicting the formation of resistive forces during shovel excavation. The shovel’s excavation was simulated in the PFC 5.0 environment using a typical field-size hydraulic shovel bucket to generate the shovel contact forces required to overcome formation resistance

A residential metals abatement program has been underway in Butte for more than 20 years. More than 1,350 yard and attic cleanups were completed by the end of 2018; most triggered by lead. While the focus is on remediation of residential soil and house dust, the program also includes a blood lead monitoring program with identification and abatement of additional sources of exposure for children with elevated blood lead levels (BLLs). As specified in the remediation program, studies are being conducted every 5 years to assess BLL data collected from Butte children. The first two studies have evaluated over 6,000 BLLs from 2003 through 2017 and evaluated trends over this time period, by Butte neighborhood, and as compared to areas outside of Butte. These studies showed that rates of elevated BLLs (i.e., those above 5 µg/dL) in Butte children have declined dramatically since 2002 but have been declining much more slowly since 2011. Improved rates of confirmation testing are needed to verify the rates of elevated BLLs. While the RMAP likely has contributed to these declines in BLLs the magnitude of impact cannot be quantified.

Outokumpu Electronics has designed a new on-line coal slurry ash analyzer, based on an instrument developed at Michigan Technological University. The primary goal was to build an accurate instrument at the lowest possible cost. The instrument determines ash content from measurements of x-ray backscatter, iron Ka fluorescence, and low-energy y-ray absorption. It is capable of measuring the ash content with a standard error of 1.1% ash over an analysis range of 9-21% ash and 7-22% solids. The analyzer was tested on coals from United States, Poland, Great Britain and the USSR.

In underground coal mining, the specification and control of belt and bunker capacities are complicated by (1) stochastic and intermittent conveyor loading, (2) a limited ability to reduce surge at the mine face, and (3) occasional overlapping of loading from two or more mine faces on the conveyors. Recently, because of longwall mining and other factors, the capacity requirements of most mine conveying systems have risen substantially; as a result, efficient capacity design and control have become important mine planning issues. This paper reviews these design issues and their associated modeling procedures. Design considerations and modeling difficulties are also examined.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) mineral carbonation is a carbon capture and storage (CCS) technique that can sequester CO2 permanently in the form of durable carbonate minerals. Extendable permanent storage capacity — onshore and offshore storage reservoirs — and the exothermic nature of the mineralization process make this technique attractive [1]. In the present study, maximum carbonation efficiency for aqueous mineral carbonation was achieved through two steps: optimization of calcium leaching from cement kiln dust followed by the reaction of pure CO2 with the calcium hydroxide precipitates formed by hydroxylation using sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Optimization of calcium leaching is highly important, as it is a rate-limiting reaction step in mineral carbonation and also influences and enhances the carbonation efficiency. To maximize the calcium leaching as well as carbonation efficiency, response surface methodology — with either Box-Behnken design or central composite design — was applied. It is the most well-known statistical, fully randomized and bias-free method for determining optimized conditions using quadratic regression models.

The centre of the mining operations of the International Nickel Company, Ontario Division is Sudbury, a city of 160,000 population located 240 miles northwest of Toronto (Fig. 1). Within thirty miles of this city and located around the rim of the geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin are the ten underground mines and one open pit operated by the Company (Fig. 2). There are also four developing mines, three in the Sudbury area and one at Shebandowan, near the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario and approximately 150 miles north east of Duluth, Minnesota. In 1971 the mines produced 22,800,000 tons, 20,600,000 tons from underground and the balance from open pits. Also located in the Sudbury District are facilities to extract and refine the metals contained in the ore. There is a nickel refinery located at Port Colborne on Lake Erie. An additional nickel refinery is under construction near Sudbury. Fifteen elements are recovered from the Sudbury ores, nickel, copper, iron, sulphur, gold, silver, cobalt, tellurium and the six platinum group metals, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium and osmium. In an attempt to replace the traditional cyanide process of extracting gold, a new technology using ammoniacal solutions has been developed. In this study, the electrochemical behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions at temperatures above 100°C has been investigated. An electrochemical cell in an autoclave has been introduced to carry out this study. The system consists of a gold working electrode, a platinum counter electrode, and an external saturated calomel electrode (SCE) which is connected to the autoclave system through a Birch wood plug. Techniques used in this study included potentiodynamic polarization, galvanostatic polarization, cyclic voltammetry, and Tafel polarization. The electrochemical reaction mechanisms governing the dissolution process are presented.

I am indeed honored to be the 1991 recipient of the Daniel C. Jackling Award. To be voted this honor by my peers in the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration and AIME means more to me than I can truly express. Daniel Jackling's position and prominence in the mining industry first came to my attention in the fall of 1949 when I transferred from Wisconsin Institute of Technology, then a three-year school, to the Missouri School of Mines to complete my last year for a bachelor's degree in mining engineering. I played basketball in the Jackling gym and ran track on the Jackling field. I didn't know a lot about Jackling then, except he was an honored graduate of the school and, obviously, supported the school financially. Over the years, Jackling's name kept coming up. He was a man with a reputation for being a doer, a mining leader who was always a step ahead, a mining engineer who knew how to motivate men in the working place, to organize mining systems, to finance and organize corporations. to open up new, low-grade ore bodies for exploitation. If Jackling were alive today, I would expect he would bean excellent candidate to apply practical rock mechanics to his projects. Looking over the list of Jackling Award recipients, I have known many, have met many personally and had a few who were dear friends that affected my own professional life. Ab Shoemaker, '58, and I consulted at the White Pine Copper Co. on mining problems in the 1960s. We arranged for our visits to the mine to coincide so that we could collaborate on our ideas. I would rent an auto and drive for Ab. He said he was the only mining engineer in the country that had a PhD for a chauffeur. James Boyd, '67, was my mentor as regards the White Pine Rock Mechanics Program that we organized in 1963. Only through Boyd's forsight. leadership, dedication and willingness to spend money on research and development did the Practical Rock Mechnics Program at White Pine succeed. He never wavered in his support to that program or to me personally. Tom Howard, '75, was my predecessor in 1970 as Director of Mining Research for the US Bureau of Mines. When I joined the Bureau in August 1970, he had the research centers up and running. Any successes I may have had with the Bureau of Mines were due in great part to Tom's leadership and organization throughout the 1960s. Gene Cameron, '68, was my teacher at the University of Wisconsin and I remember him fondly. He was the one professor who lectured in a manner that made me welcome going to his classes each day, a truly remarkable educator. If you have come today to listen to me talk about instrumentation, rock properties, stress-strain relationships, rock mechanics theory, etc., you will be disappointed. Large volumes of data have been collected by well qualified theoreticians to define stress-strain conditions in mines. Unfortunately, very little of this data has been used by industry due to the lack of initiative and understanding by the researchers to the true problems of implementation in the industry. I hope my remarks will assist future investigators to work through the maze of operational problems so they will experience the satisfaction of seeing their research used. I fully realize that the Jackling Award is given by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration and is primarily offered for accomplishments in hardrock mining. I have found it impossible to separate hardrock and coal mining when I talk about "Applied Rock Mechanics." There is too much overlap and the same mechanics principles are applied to both. For example, coal mine designs have been applied to salt, trona and potash. Also, the original layout and design of White Pine Copper Mine was based on coal mine designs. A salt dome appears to provide the basic medium requirements for the excavation of the 315 foot diameter, unsupported spherical cavity at a depth of 2700 feet required by the AEC in a proposed "decoupling" experiment. Tatum Salt Dome was a natural choice for a site because more geological and hydrological information has been accumulated on Tatum than any other salt dome on the Gulf Coast. The Tatum Dome is a mile in diameter, roughly flat topped, nearly cylindrical in shape and has some overhang at the top. The salt stock has nearly vertical layering of alternating bands of salt and anhydrite. In the vicinity of the dome, adequate fresh water for solution mining is available in surface streams and in subsurface aquifers. A saline aquifer is available for brine disposal. A tentative cavity location was selected near the center of the dome which meets the design criteria established by the AEC.

This new tool can be used for the proper assessment of the potential economic wealth of any risky capital project. It does provide an unambiguous recommendation of the type "go or no go" to the decision-maker simply by comparing two different ratios profit/investment. One ratio determines the minimum value required to at least break-even while the other measures a probable value based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes (weakest link concept). Its application is briefly illustrated by means of an underground gold mine project, an oil sands mine project and a poly-metallic open pit project.

The Republic of South Africa is a heterogeneous mixture of Black Africans, Afrikaans, British, Indians, Malayans, French Huguenots, and many others from Europe and Asia. A decisive date in its recent history is the collapse of the Apartheid Regime in 1994. For a metallurgist, South Africa is the country of diamonds, gold, platinum, and many other metals. In 1887 Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902) was able to take control of the De Beers Mining Company after the discovery of diamonds at Kimberly in 1866. It was there where the so-called School of Mines was inaugurated in 1896.

"More than 800 million tons of material will be excavated during large underground projects such as tunnels, undergrounds and power plants by 2030 in Europe only. The raw material excavated is often classified as waste, which involves environmental impact and transport issues: landfill areas, CO2 emissions and noise. But how can such massive amounts of material be transported, processed and deposited? Using the example of the AlpTransit Ceneri Base Tunnel (15.4 km), we show that suitable excavated materials can be used sustainably as a primary resource for tunnel concrete. This requires careful planning of the installations and storage areas by the client, timely building of the processing plants and other handling facilities outside the tunnel and a continuous evaluation of the raw material quality. 1. INTRODUCTION Spoil management is a central element of large construction projects. The systematic reuse of suitable excavated material not only saves natural resources, reduces transport distances and landfill volume, but can also decrease overall construction costs. Ideally, all of the concrete needed for tunnel lining can be produced with this on-site material. Such a natural resource management concept was applied for the construction of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel (L = 57 km). Spoil management concepts are, how-ever, difficult to implement and call for innovative techniques, sophisticated logistics and organization. In the context of large projects, environmentally friendly transport, processing and storage of millions of tons of excavated loose material represent another logistics challenge (Simmen & Lieb, 2010). This paper shows key factors that led to the successful completion of spoil management at the Ceneri Base Tunnel, which constitutes a part of the AlpTransit Gotthard Project (Figure 1)."
