"The subject of this writing was first published in 1998 with the emphasis on the hardware cost comparison. Other costs, such as the required land area and spatial volume, were mentioned but not emphasized, as these were not deemed as important for new projects where the space was appropriated as required. During the last decade, these other costs have proven to be more than equal in importance. Large volume, highangle conveying by “conveyors with cover belt, dates back to the early 1950s, when such systems were employed at the bucket wheel excavator boom conveyor in German lignite mines to increase the depth of cut without increasing the boom length. Various systems were developed, patented and built. These systems were not a lasting success for various reasons, which are noted by Rasper[1]. In his 1958 “Review of Cover Belt Systems,” Rasper summarizes the characteristics which are worth pursing and those that should be abandoned. The former are akin to good conveyor engineering. The sandwich belt conveyor model. The first sandwich belt conveyor model allowed calculation of the required hugging pressure to develop the bulk material’s internal friction and preclude material slideback. A modern, accurate version of the sandwich belt conveyor model is presented in Fig. 1. This model depicts accurately a derating of the material cross-section allowing an ample belt edge distance that can tolerate normal belt misalignment without material spillage. The calculations must thus recognize that only part of the hugging pressure is imparted onto the material with the remainder transferred belt edge to belt edge affecting a material seal. Mathematical development of the sandwich belt model is covered by Dos Santos and Frizzell in their 1983 article, “Evolution of Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors.”"

The measurement principle of the Coulter Counter for particle size analyses is described. The application of the Coulter Counter to cement particle content and size analysis and to the size distribution of clinker from standard grindability tests are described. Methods of calibration, sample preparation and data reduction are presented. The results of the analyses obtained are compared with characteristics associated with performance showing both concordance and non-concordance of test data., Future uses of the Coulter Counter for particle size analysis in research and plant control adaptations are indicated.

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

The present work aims to investigate the link between the oxidation and reduction of a weathered ilmenite concentrate in terms of phase transitions, microstructural changes, and element distribution. An ilmenite concentrate sample was pelletized and fired at 1000 °C in air, and as a result, the pellets were oxidized. The oxidized pellets were reduced by hydrogen gas at 1000 °C, which yielded almost complete metallization of the iron content of the pellets. The ore and the pellets were characterized in each step by XRD and SEM techniques, and distribution of elements and phases were investigated. Ilmenite, pseudorutile, and rutile were the main phases detected in the ilmenite concentrate sample, and depending on the weathering degree of the particles, different fractions of the phases were identified in their microstructure. It was found that irregular rutile grains dispersed in a pseudobrookite matrix is the morphology of the oxidized ilmenite phase. However, increasing microcracks and porosities were the only microstructural changes in the pseudorutile phase after oxidation in air. Studying the specific types of the ore particles and their oxidized and reduced forms indicated that the phase distribution in the ilmenite ore particles dictates the phase distribution in the oxidized and reduced ones. Results show that the morphology of the reduced particles includes a titanium (III) oxide matrix in which reduced iron globules are dispersed.

"INTRODUCTION Comprehensive overviews of the world-class talc deposits and related prospects in Montana were published by Olson (1976) and by Berg (1979). Both of these compilations include detailed descriptions and maps of the talc deposits and occurrences and were followed by a regional map and summary descriptions of the talc deposits published by Van Gosen et al. (1998). More recent publications, descriptions and field guides for some of the deposits include Underwood et al. (2014), Cerino et al. (2007), and Cerino (2002). The present paper focuses on some of the more recent ideas regarding talc formation that have developed since the publication of the earlier overviews. Olson (1976) reported that talc production from the deposits in southwestern Montana was over 200,000 tons in 1974 and that talc production had doubled between 1969 and 1974. The last year for which the U.S. Geological Survey published production records for talc by state was 1993. Production in Montana in 1993 was 350,000 tonnes (Virta, 1994). Remaining reserves are substantial at all three of the producing mines in the district. Minerals Technologies Inc., the parent company of Barretts Minerals Inc., stated in its 2014 annual report that it has reserves of 2,791,000 tons of talc. Imerys stated in its financial report for 2014 that it had 19,638,000 tons of proven and probable talc reserves at its North American mines. Although the Imerys reserves were not reported by individual mines or states, a large proportion of the total reserves would likely consist of the reserves at the Yellowstone mine, located south of Ennis, Montana. Talc mined in southwestern Montana is of high purity and is the quality used in a wide variety of applications including paints, ceramics, plastics, rubber, coatings, agriculture, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. GEOLOGIC SYNOPSES FOR MAJOR MINES AND COMMENTS ON REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF TALC OCCURRENCES The general geology of southwestern Montana is shown in Figure 1along with the locations of the three producing talc deposits in the area and the extent of pre-Belt marbles that host all of the talc mines and prospects. The term “pre-Belt” is used in the present paper because zircon and other radiometric data developed in recent years indicates that the metamorphic rocks that form the crystalline basement for the middle Proterozoic Belt basin in the Dillon Tectonic Block of southwestern Montana includes both Archean and Paleoproterozoic rocks (O’Neill et al., 1996; Foster et al., 2006; McDonald et al., 2012). An envelope or “corridor” has been superimposed on the geology in Figure 1 which encompasses all of the talc deposits that have a significant resource. This “talc corridor” will be discussed in later sections of this report. The more important talc deposits are discussed in this report section."

"Improved safety and more environmentally friendly operation are basic advantages of mechanical excavation over the drill and blast method. Raise Boring Machines (RBMs) are one of the types of these machines which have recently been increased use in Turkey. The excavated hole with RBM is more stable than other methods and has better air flow, making it ideal for ventilation shafts. This paper is a summary of the performance of a RBM in the Balya PB-Zn Mine in Turkey. Length and diameter of the ventilation shaft are 200 m and 2.4 m, respectively. The geological and geotechnical characteristics of the strata excavated in the mine are first given and later the validity of a model developed to predict the machine performance is discussed. It is believed that the results of this study and the model given to estimate the performance of the RBM will be useful guide for future applications. INTRODUCTION Raise boring technology was developed to meet the demands of the mining industry, but has also found numerous applications in tunneling or infrastructure projects for ventilation purposes. Raise boring machine uses a small diameter drill rod, around 230-350 mm to drill a pilot hole down to the required depth up to around 2000 m. Once the pilot hole has been drilled to the desired depth, a reamer of up to 9 m diameter is attached to the drill rod. The reamer is then pulled back up to the upper level, creating a round shape. Continues operation provides a faster advance rate than other methods. RBMs are suitable both in hard and soft rock. The flexibility in different angles and diameters is a great advantage compared to drill and blast excavation method. RBM creates a shaft with smooth walls which usually does not require lining. The hole is more stable than a drilled and blasted method and has better air flow, making it ideal for ventilation shafts. Raise boring is convenient method in competent rock; however several problems are faced in geological formations where geological discontinuities are dominant. Moreover, assembly and disassembly time may be long in some cases. The performance and operational parameters of the excavating machine should be predicted prior to starting the excavation operations in order to fulfill the economic requirements of the project. In the light of this fact, the main objective of this investigation is to summarize a case study on raise boring machine performance and suggest a new model based on laboratory test results. First, general description of the mine and project are provided. Then, the physical and mechanical characteristics of the samples taken from project area are discussed. In the third section, performance and operational parameters of RBM are investigated to understand the machine behavior in different rock characteristics and also to collect a useful database for further investigation. In the fourth section, a new model for performance estimation of RBM are recommended."

"Workers at mineral processing facilities are often exposed to high levels of dust generated when ores are processed. Crushing, grinding, screening, and other processes generate large quantities of dust, which can exceed the threshold VALUES (prescribed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Many ores contain quartz (silica), which has been known to cause serious health problems in workers over time. Given the structure of mineral processing plants, the airflow regime is not coherent inside the building, which may lead to multiple recirculation zones. These recirculation zones can trap dust, and concentrations of dust can then rise over time. Therefore, there is a need to understand the airflow phenomenon that occur inside of mineral processing facilities and how these occurrences interact with the dust generation processes to identify zones of potentially high dust concentration. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling can give a better understanding of the airflow and help recommend designs and methods to mitigate the high dust concentrations in a mineral processing plant. This paper presents the CFD modeling of airflow inside of a mill building to demonstrate airflow patterns that will affect the generation and subsequent dispersion of dust due to crushing, grinding, and other activities. This study was conducted by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). INTRODUCTION In a mineral processing facility, minerals go through various mechanical processes in order to reduce their size for separation of economic minerals from gangue minerals to produce a final marketable product. This research, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), focuses on ore mills in metal and nonmetal mining (MNM) operations, but the applicability of the approach will be valid for any large structure where workers are exposed to airborne contaminants. The processes of crushing, grinding, cleaning, drying, and product sizing in these facilities generate a large amount of dust, creating hazardous conditions for the workers in these facilities. This is highlighted by the fact that MSHA sampling data for the years 1997–2012 indicate that 12.3% and 15.9% of the gathered samples were over 100 µg/m3 for silica for metal and nonmetal mills, respectively [1]. Mineral processing operations typically use some type of engineering control to address their most significant dust sources. Engineering controls include such approaches as bag-house-type dust collectors, scrubbers, and electrostatic precipitation [2]."

Research objectives included 1) determine relationships if any between spectral response of soil and soil textural groups, Unified Soil Classification subgroups and selected landforms and 2) develop computer assisted techniques for engineering soils mapping of remotely sensed data. The sire in northeastern Kansas, 1.6 Km by 43 Km (1.0 mi by 27 mi), contained glacial and alluvial soils. Multispectral scanner data (0.40 to 1.80 pm) collected at 915 meters altitude (3,000 feet) were analyzed using two distinct computer techniques: the nonsupervised approach involving delineation of soil training areas directly by computer and the supervised approach entailing training area selection manually by the researcher. Computer classification of surface materials follows both methods. Non supervised analysis results failed to show a consistant relation- ship between landform type and soil spectral class. Landforms correlating well displayed either unusually bright or unusually dark spectral signatures. Supervised analysis results showed a strong relationship between soil texture and soil spectral class. A moderately strong tie was shown between engineering soils groups (ML, CL, CH and OH) and their respective spectral classes, and a weak association between landform type and soil spectral class. An analysis procedure for engineering soils mapping by computer of remotely sensed data was developed. 1. Locate cultural features by visual examination of imagery. 2. Produce generalized bare soil-vegetation- water map using nonsupervised technique. 3. Outline significant soil fields for computer training using supervised approach. 4. Computer-classify entire area based on these soil fields.

Pull-off forces were measured for 8-9 pm diameter polystyrene (PSI particles on smooth spin- coated polystyrene films and hexadecanethiol (HDT) self-assemble monolayer surfaces using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Three parameters were controlled during experimentation: (i) the maximum applied load pressing the particle onto the substrate was varied from 50 to 4,000 nN, (ii) loading/unloading rate for the particle to attach and separate from the substrate varied from 0.01 to 9.3 Hz, and (iii) contact time for particle to reside on the substrate surface before retracting the particle to separate it from the surface changed from I µsecond to 200 seconds. the pull-off forces increased with increasing applied loading, increasing loading/unloading rate, and increasing contact time for the PS particle on PS film and on HDT monolayer. The PS particles experience elastic and plastic deformations duringpull-08 force measurements. Plastic deformation is primarily associated with flattening of surface irregularities. The results obtained in this research suggest that the particle-substrate contact areas of the magnitude comparable to those predicted by the JKR contact mechanical model can be reached in the AFM experiments by using high applied loads and long particle-substrate contact times. This result re-opens the prospect of' using AFM for studying surface energies of deformable micro-particles, even if the micro-particles have small irregularities on the surface.

Flocculation is an important step in the treatment of coal preparation waste waters. The effects of polymer charge and molecular weight and solution pH and ionic strength on the adsorption and flocculation characteristics of a series of polymeric flocculants on some typical waste water constituents have been studied experimentally. The results indicate that the nature and extent of flocculation are strongly system-dependent. For the case of coal, both adsorption and flocculation behavior can be correlated with the polymer conformation in solution. For the mineral constituents, on the other hand, adsorption and flocculation depend also on the surface properties of the solid.

Sutter Gold Venture excavated an exploration decline into a mineralized zone in the Sutter Creek gold mining district. Delays in obtaining the conditional-use permit resulted in 7 to 10 million gallons of water accumulation in the decline containing elevated dissolved arsenic. Sutter received a permit to land apply the water after reducing the arsenic concentration to 0.05 mg/L. Initially the water was treated by co- precipitation arsenic with ferric hydroxide. Operational difficulties of this treatment system resulted in Sutter pursuing alternative treatment methods. The activated alumina adsorpting was selected due to its flexibility and ease of operation. Operating and maintenance data and costs will be presented.

Many recent mine developments in North America are located in remote northern regions with extreme winter temperatures in the range of -20oF to -60°F. In addition, many locations are subject to very heavy snowfall. This paper discusses some of the key considerations in the planning and design of mine plant buildings, particularly concentrators, located in these regions. SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS The subject is considered under three main headings: I. Building Out line and Structural Frame 2. Wall and Roof Materials 3. Foundations The plan outline of a mine plant building will naturally be governed by the scope and layout of the process equipment it contains. The selection of roof profile, on the other hand, will generally depend upon a number of factors extraneous to the process e.g. snow conditions. When these factors are considered for concentrators in cold locations, a flat or stepped roof will usually be more economical and suitable than a sloping roof. The materials normally used for the structural framework of concentrators are the same as used for other industrial buildings, namely steel, concrete and wood. Molybdenite and chalcopyrite are two often-associated minerals. In Quebec, the Gaspe Copper Company, a subsidiary of the Noranda group, currently operates a molybdenite flotation circuit to recover a one percent trace of this mineral in the chalcopyrite concentrate. The low levels of molybdeni 2 preclude the use of flotation to remove molybdenum directly from the ore while scavenging of chalcopyrite concentrate for molybdenite yields a concentrate of the latter of somewhat inadequate quality. Such a situation could possibly best be solved by hydrometallurgical means, if molybdenite could be leached selectively from the chalcopyrite concentrate. Work in the field of extractive metallurgy was initiated about 22 years ago in the laboratory of the department of mining and metallurgy at Laval University, Quebec. Following a literature search, two objectives were selected. The present talk will outline some of the results obtained to-date and it is hoped the ensuing discussion of the paper can raise questions of immediate assistance to us for the future. First, as an immediate objective of-practical use, the oxidation rates for molybdenite and chalcopyrite in alkaline media would be studied under conditions of possible industrial application. Secondly, the kinetics of mass transfer of gases in pressure reactor are to be studied. Solubility data for various gases in aqueous solutions have been gathered by a few investigators, to mention the work of Pray1, Wadsworth2, Pawlek3 and Gerlach. Scattering in experimental results and discrepancies between authors are ominously present. Kinetics of mass transfer have somewhat been more neglected. A systematic investigation by the school of Berlin has greatly helped in the design of impeller most suitable for gas dispersion, without much reference however to the solid dispersing ability of the various designs. Variables affecting rates of gas transfer to the solution have not been studied. Studies on the aqueous oxidation of sulfide minerals are much more numerous. While molybdenite has been relatively less studied, work has been carried in two areas namely in alkaline oxidation of MoS2 , work performed by Dresher2 and Wadsworth, and in the hypochlorite leach of molybdenite by Bhappu4 and co-workers, These two methods showed appreciable rates of leaching for molybdenite. In general, comparisons between rates of oxidation of this sulfide with that for chalcopyrite have not been made.

"The Cityringen project foresees the construction of a new circular metro line in and around the city center of Copenhagen. Both drives, the north and the south one, required the TBMs to be equipped in order to cope with contaminated water table and soil. The north drive mined in water contaminated with chlorinated compounds, including chloroform and vinyl chloride, while the south TBMs excavated in a highly benzene contaminated area, becoming the first TBMs to complete such a challenge. Despite the pollution and the stricter operative procedures, the production has been extremely successful with record up to 520 m in one month and 32 m in one day. 1 INTRODUCTION The Cityringen is an extension of the existing metro line. The 15 km long twin tunnels will form a new circular line with 21 new stations (17 + 4 crossovers). When finished it will interchange with the existing metro, rail and bus infrastructure at key locations around town, taking 90% of Copenhagen citizen at less the 600m from a metro station (Figure 1). The Contract has been awarded in April 2011 to the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT), a joint venture between the Italian companies Salini Impregilo, Tecnimont and Seli SpA. Tunnels are being excavated with 4 Seli-Kawasaki EPB TBMs, two of which manufactured in Denmark by Seli Tunneling Denmark ApS, which is also operating them. At the moment this article is written 50% of the tunnels have been completed and over 40% handed over for the electromechanical works. Seli Tunnelling Denmark is a Danish company constituted in 2012 as a subsidiary of Seli SpA for this project and subsequently acquired by the Salini Impregilo Group in 2015."

Tests were conducted to investigate the potential for recovering anthracite from preparation plant tailings. Samples were collected from tailings streams or slurry ponds of several anthracite cleaning plants. A washability analysis was conducted on each sample. The use of gravity-and surface-based cleaning processes for treating the 28x200 mesh tailings material was examined. Simulations were performed for various cyclone staging arrangements using published partition data for both water-only and dense-medium cyclones. Froth flotation testing was done on both precleaned anthracite and tailings material. Grade-yield curves were determined for various conditions.

The use of finite element programs for evaluating large grinding mill shells is becoming increasingly popular. However, large scale, detailed analysis can become a burdensome task when one is required to manually prepare the necessary data to be entered into the program, while evaluating the voluminous results is even more devastating. Although available computerized finite element analyses can reduce computation time from years to months or even weeks, additional pre and post processors can reduce the time for data preparation and result evaluation to hours, while simultaneously reducing the probability of human error. Examples of the uses of these processors are presented as well as typical modeling techniques.

Shallow underground voids resulting from early coal mining and other resource recovery activities over the past several decades are now being recognized as a significant cause of ground subsidence problems. Uncertain knowledge of abandoned coal mines also imposes potential hazards in current mining operations since water inundation or the release of methane gas is a serious hazard when mine excavation operations break into an abandoned mine. Requirements for detecting and mapping subversive man-made tunnels in previous work has led to the development of a surface- operated automatic earth resistivity survey system and associated computer data processing system for military applications. Field demonstration tests of this system have resulted in successful detection of tunnels at depth-to- diameter ratios greater than ten to one. Under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines, a similar high-resolution earth resistivity system was designed and constructed for use as a potential means of detecting coal mine workings. The hardware and software aspects of the new system are described together with applications of the method to the survey and mapping of abandoned coal mine workings. Field tests are presented showing the detection of both air-filled and water-filled mine workings.

"Respirable dust in underground coal mines has long been associated with lung diseases, and regular dust sampling is required for assessing occupational exposures. At present, respirable dust concentration and crystalline silica content are commonly determined, but considering recent and yet unexplained increases in the incidence of lung disease amongst miners in specific geographic regions, more information about specific dust characteristics is urgently needed. While particle-level dust analysis is ideal, it is impractical for large numbers of dust samples because it is both time and cost intensive. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), however, is an alternative option, which offers the ability to determine the total coal to mineral mass ratio in a dust sample – analogous to proximate analysis of bulk coal samples for determining ash content. Here, preliminary development of a TGA method for this purpose is presented. The method is being developed to evaluate dust collected on mixed cellulose ester (MCE) filters using approved permissible sampling equipment. INTRODUCTION Based on the particle size, airborne mine dust can be classified in three categories: inhalable dust (< 100 µm in size), thoracic dust (< 25 µm in size), and respirable dust (< 5 µm in size) (Ramani et al., 2003). The World Health Organization (WHO, 1999) defines inhalable dust particles as those which can be breathed into the nose and mouth, and thoracic dust particles as those which can penetrate airways of the head and enter the airways of the lung. On the other hand, respirable dust particles can penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles into the gas-exchange regions (alveoli) of the lungs (WHO, 1999). Hlavay (1992) reported that the seriousness of the damage in the lungs and respiratory tract is based on amount of dust remaining in these organs, and the amount of dust depends on the extent of dust exposure, the size distribution of the dust particles, and the capability of the body for dust elimination. Inhalation of respirable coal dust by miners can cause a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease which is called coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP). Silicosis is another fatal lung disease caused by inhalation of respirable silica dust. In CWP and silicosis, dust particles deposit in the lungs, damage the lung tissue, and ultimately cause scarring which cannot be reversed (Colinet, 2010). While overall incidence occupation-related lung disease amongst coal miners in the US has been declining for over 40 years, it appears that there has been a recent increase in specific locations in Central Appalachia (CDC, 2006; Pollock et al. 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011). Although this trend is yet unexplained, one theory is that particular dust characteristics in these locations may be a factor (Hassan and Lau; Page & Oraniscak 2002). For example, several studies have indicated that different coals may generate different amounts of respirable dust (e.g., see Page, 1993 and Litton and Page, 1994), and the surrounding geology may also play a role in terms of the types of dust particles generated. Although respirable dust concentration and crystalline silica content are commonly determined as part of regulatory compliance sampling, more information about specific dust characteristics (e.g., size, shape and composition) is urgently needed."

The Coal Mining Section of the National Safety Council has selected hand and finger injuries of coal miners as a major topic for safety policy analysis [Tinney, 19851. So that facts about hand and finger injuries can be used to guide the Committee&apos;s work and the work of policy-makers, we present in this paper detailed analyses of the following factors related to hand and finger injuries received by coal miners between 1975 and 1983: occupations of the injured miners; activities of the miners when injured; machines involved; objects, substances, exposures, or bodily motions that produced or inflicted the injuries; principal physical characteristics of injuries; and events directly resulting in the injuries. We analyze hand injuries for underground and surface mines separately because of the remarkably different production methods and hazards evident in these two operating environments. We do not, however, provide information about hand and finger injuries that occurred in surface operations at underground sites (such as yards, shops, or tipples), auger mining operations, culm banks, dredging operations, mill or preparation plants, offices, or laboratories. The most comprehensive information about the safety of coal mining in the United States is assembled by the Health and Safety Analysis Center (HSAC) of the Mine Safety and Health Administration of the United States Department of Labor. Mine operators in the United States report to HSAC all injuries as required under Part 50, Title 30, of the Code of Federal Regulations (mandated by Section 103 the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977, Public Law 95-164). These regulations stipulate that injuries must be reported within ten days of their occurrence on a United States government data collection form, Mine Accident, Illness and Injury Report (MSHA Form 7000-1). Landusky Mining, Inc. and Zortman Mining, Inc. are two registered Montana Corporations wholly owned by Pegasus Gold, Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. The Zortman and Landusky Mines are located in the Little Rockies District of central Montana. The Zortman-Landusky mines produced 2,100 kg gold in 1982. A total of 3,250,000 t of ore per year are mined during the period March 1, to September 15, at an average grade of 1.04 gm/t (0.03 oz/t) gold and 13.4 gm/t (0.385 oz/t) silver at a cutoff grade of 0.35 grams of gold/ton (0.01 oz of Au/t) of ore. The stripping ratio during 1983 is anticipated to be 0.75/1 waste to ore. Combined average plant capacity of the two Merrill-Crowe plants is 9,840 lpm (2,600 gpm). The combined heap spray capacity of the two plants approaches 18,900 lpm (5,000 gpm). The mine employs approximately 200 people, about half of these work for the mining companies and the other half for the mining contractor, N. A. Degerstrom of Spokane, Washington. Net profit in 1982 for Zortman and Landusky Mining, Inc. approximated $4,900,000 at an average gold price of $11.40/gm.
