In producing and selling coal, the coal company is faced with many different parameters by which the quality of its product is evaluated. One type, which we choose to call the economic parameters, includes moisture, ash, sulfur, and Btu's. These are reasonably well understood by both the coal supplier and the customer, and the dollar values can be placed on them. This is the group of parameters of primary interest to most purchasing agents buying coal. A second group of parameters governs how the coal will behave in the boiler itself and is of primary concern to the engineers designing the boiler and to the men who must operate and maintain it. Since we have not yet learned to put dollar values on these parameters, they generally show up in coal contracts simply as cutoff points, the purchaser simply saying that he will not accept coal outside of certain limits.

The South-Central area of the Osa Peninsula, Puntarenas Province, on the Pacific coast of southern Costa Rica, may have produced on the order of 30,000 kg (100,000 troy oz) of gold since prehistoric times. The Peninsula lies along an 800- to 900-km-long belt of late Mesozoic eugeosynclinal rock deposition, hydrothermal activity, and deformation (Campanian). The oldest rocks exposed in the area are basalt and tuffaceous mudstone of the Late Jurassic or Cretaceous Nicoya ophiolite complex. The Nicoya Complex is overlain by weakly lithified Pleistocene Older Sediments, predominantly conglomeratic sandstone and derived from erosion of the Nicoya Complex. Erosion reduced the Complex to a surface of high relief, so that the detrital source was in the area originally; the source retreated with subsidence. Stratigraphically, the Older Sediments are followed by surficial deposits of intermediate age, consolidated Younger Sediments reworked from Older Sediments, and unconsolidated Holocene surficial deposits reworked from Younger Sediments. The most prominent structures are a northeast-trending anticline and northeast and northwest fault sets. Some deformation was Cretaceous, but folding and much faulting occurred after deposition of the Older Sediments. Remnants of plainlike features and destructional terraces on the Older Sediments attest to stepwise downcutting of the terrain during successive stages of uplift. Near the end of this process, the present valley floors and coastal headlands developed. During a probable epeirogenic rise in sea level, Younger Sediments filled the valley bottoms and an aggradational coastal plain developed. Sea level dropped by stages and with some reversals to its present position; this caused stepwise incision of the valley fill, stepwise beveling of the coastal plain, and development of the present wave-cut platform. Spilitization around the time of the Campanian orogeny caused some parts of the Nicoya complex to be calcitized and others to be silicified. Gold, pyrite, and probably additional silica were introduced during subsequent hydrothermal activity. Native gold was eroded from Nicoya Complex lodes and reconcentrated through three generations of placer gold deposits. First, the gold was deposited as a detrital.

In an exchange of views with the Program Chairman for the Technical Session on Industrial Minerals and Investment in Foreign Countries, it was agreed that it would be more interesting to approach the problem of mineral investment in foreign countries in a more general framework and not confine it to industrial minerals. Therefore, this Bureau of Mines report is proposed to examine current attitudes toward investments in foreign mineral resources and restraints that they impose on investments necessary to assure supply for future global mineral needs.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia currently operate a 600,000 t/d mining and 125,000 t/d milling operation in the remote highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The isolated location and generally difficult working conditions make for challenges not encountered in most North American operations. In spite of this, the mill technical groups have been able to develop and maintain a highly effective level of plant wide automation. This has been achieved through the appropriate selection of available technologies and the implementation of innovative management practices. This paper provides an overview of the control systems currently installed and focuses on those practices which have resulted in the long term success of process control at Freeport.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines inventoried and characterized mineral sites and production plants within 200 km of the border in both the U.S. and Mexico. Sources of information included the USBM Minerals Availability System, the USBM Automated Mineral Information System, the USGS Mineral Resources Data System, the Mine Safety and Health Administration Address/Employment File, and the literature. Three hundred seventy-eight major construction material and industrial mineral properties were identified and characterized in the U.S. and Mexican parts of the Borderlands. Sixty-six major metallic mineral properties were identified and characterized in the Mexican part of the Borderlands.

The Miami mine is located near the town of Miami, Gila County, Arizona. The Miami mine started mining in 1910 and finished in July, 1959. The orebody was divided and mined as follows: Tons High Grade 24,400,000 - Top slicing, sub-level caving, etc. Low Grade 105,100,000 - Block caving Mixed ore 9,800,000 - " Low Grade #2 13,100,000 - " Total Mining 152,400,000 GEOLOGY Ore minerals are largely in pre-Cambrian Pinal schist intruded by tertiary Schultz granite porphyry and covered to some extent by Quarternary Gila conglomerate. The structures are highly faulted and shattered. The Miami fault on the east cuts off the ore and the Pinto fault on the southwest caused re-oxidation of enriched sulphides producing mixed ore. MINERALOGY The chief mineral is chalcocite, with chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, malachite, azurite, chrysocola, cuprite, native copper, and molybdenite as minor minerals. The ore minerals occur in seams, veinlets and disseminated particles. In block caving there is always some dilution, and drawing of ore stops when the grade drops past an economical point. This results in a small amount of copper left in the stopes below the capping. There is some copper in the capping, probably below 0.03% or less than 0.6 lbs. per ton. Over the low grade #2 orebody and portions of the high grade there was an oxide capping which was not mined. The crushed pilars are another source of copper. The leaching at Miami is an attempt to recover this last remaining copper of a worked-out mine. The enrichment at the Miami mine had gone more nearly to completion than most ore bodies in the southwest. There is practically no pyrite in the capping and very little in the ore.

Visible and sometimes audible indications of excessive underground rock pressure such as pillar fracturing, squeezes on chocks, and "roof talk" are familiar to mining engineers. Such signs often precede rock failure on a larger scale and therefore may be used as a warning. Nevertheless, these subjective observations do not provide an adequate means of evaluating the existing rock pressure conditions in a mine. One method which appears to be extremely promising in determining the stability of geologic structures in general is that of monitoring their associated micro seismic activity. Mining engineers generally agree that during the process of rock deformation and failure small-scale seismic ("microseismic") vibrations are produced in the rock itself. These transient vibrations propagate through the rock structure and may be detected at a considerable distance from the failed rock by employing suitable electronic monitoring equipment. Hardy (1) has presented a detailed review of microseismic research in the mining, petroleum, and geoscience areas, and it is apparent that relatively little application of micro seismic techniques have been made in coal mines. This is especially true in North America since here most coal mines are fairly shallow and consequently are not generally subjected to excessive stresses. Furthermore, strict Federal and State mining laws limit the use of electrical equipment in coal mines complicating the use of the necessary monitoring facilities. In terms of both mine safety and economics, monitoring microseismic activity appears to be invaluable in the detection and location of over-stressed pillars and unstable roof conditions caused by development and production work. In 1970 The Pennsylvania State University Rock Mechanics Laboratory became involved in a research project, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, to investigate the feasibility of using microseismic techniques to detect and to locate potential regions of instability around a longwall coal-mine operation [Hardy and t10wrey (2); Mowrey (3)]. In this study geophones (velocity gages) located in an array of shallow boreholes drilled from the surface above the active area of the longwall were employed to detect microseismic activity, and a mobile micro-seismic monitoring facility was used to condition and record this data for later analysis. This project is unique in that measurements were made from near-surface geophones rather than geophones installed on the mine itself. Two advantages are apparent, namely that (1) there are no electrical limitations on the monitoring system and that (2) mining operations can continue normally because there is no monitoring equipment or cables in the mine.

China?s remarkable levels of economic growth during the past three decades have lifted almost 300 million people out of poverty. This amazing achievement has placed an increasing demand on energy and minerals, especially coal, which supplies 68.7 percent of China?s energy (June 2011). It is estimated that China mined more than 3 Gt (3.3 billion st) of coal in 2010, three times as much when compared to merely 10 years earlier. Such an impressive achievement does not come without major costs ?? including concerns with mine safety and an increasing number of occupational illnesses due to fast growth. This article reports on one of the major safety concerns in China?s coal mining, dust and dust control practices, and known cases of caol worker?s pneumoconiosis affiliated with prolonged exposure to excessive coal dusts. The exact size of China?s mining industry is not known, but it is estimated the coal industry is at least five-million people strong, and the metal and nonmetals industry probably employs another three million people. To meet increasing energy demand, China mined more than 3.1 Gt (3.4 billion st) of coal in 2010 from its 15,000 plus coal operations1, most of which are small- to medium-sized operations with annual coal productions ranging from a few thousand tons to 300 kt (330,000 st). These small coal operations are typically in remote areas, inadequately engineered, poorly ventilated and still using rudimentary drilling and blasting mining methods employing antiquated mining equipment and, presenting safety concerns, i.e., methane and dust explosions.

Rock salt has been mined by the solution method for many years in many countries. Attempts have been made in the past in Canada and various other countries to produce potash by the' same method. However, only Kalium Chemicals Limited (1) has been successful, possibly because the conditions in Saskatchewan are the most favorable conditions to be found so far for the development of a solution mining method for potash. There are significant differences in solution mining of rock salt and solution mining of potash. First, rock salt deposits are relatively pure in respect to soluble minerals, whereas potash is never found in the pure state and contains Substantial amounts of other soluble minerals, particularly rock salt. In comparison to rock salt, much less potash is dissolved and brought to the surface for the same amount of water circulated through the orebody. The amount of water to be evaporated per unit weight of product is a major difference. Much greater amounts of water must be evaporated when producing potash and the treatment of the brine is more complicated because other dissolved salts have to be separated. Secondly, the rock salt deposits, particularly the domes, are much thicker. Bed thickness is of prime importance because it determines the yield of a well and consequently the economics of the process. Furthermore, as rock salt provides a strong roof structure, larger cavities can be developed and this prolongs the life of the rock salt well.

Although blasting remains the most inexpensive method of fragmentation in hardrock mining, the significance of the costs of blast-induced rockmass damage in terms of mining efficiency and safety is becoming increasingly recognized. There is no straightforward and systematic method of adequately measuring blast damage in on-going mining operations. This paper considers various techniques available to measure blast damage, making particular reference to recent underground hardrock mine studies. It concludes by proposing a damage audit procedure for integration into routine mine production control.

The oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of chemical and phase composition, leaching behavior in sulfuric acid solutions, and leaching thermal effect. The waste product contained about 68 percent zinc (Zn), 7 percent chlorine (Cl), 2 percent aluminum (Al) and less than 1 percent other metals, such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc and zinc hydroxide chloride. The dissolution of metals from the zinc ash was determined for solid-to-liquid ratios ranging from 100 to 500 kg/m3, acid concentrations of 10 and 20 percent, and temperatures of 20 and 40 °C. A booster fan is an underground fan installed in series with a main surface fan and used to boost the air pressure of the ventilation air passing through it. To accomplish this objective, the fan is installed in a permanent stopping and equipped with airlock doors, a monitoring system, and interlocking devices between main and booster fan controls. The stopping and doors are used to prevent flow recirculation, and the monitors to ensure safe operation of the fan. A booster fan, properly sized and sited, can be used to create safe work conditions and allow the extraction of minerals from areas that would otherwise be uneconomic to mine. In deep and large mines with heavy emissions of air contaminants, the required quantities of air can only be supplied by using high pressure fans. These fans will inevitably induce significant losses of fresh airflow through the stoppings and doors. For well defined ventilation circuits, booster fans can be used to decrease the main fan pressures and reduce the leakage flows. However, this will require a good understanding of the correct ventilation practice, from planning to operation and maintenance of booster fans. The objective of this study is to investigate the conditions under which booster fans can be used safely and efficiently in underground coal mines. Specifically, the study is directed at (1) collecting reliable information on airway resistances and flow requirements from two large U.S coal mines, (2) collecting fan performance data from one or more existing coal mine where booster fans are used regularly, (3) monitoring the performance of booster fans in a laboratory model and an experimental mine, (4) developing a booster fan selection method to assist the ventilation engineer at the planning stage, and (5) training six M.S. or Ph.D. graduate students in advanced mine ventilation.

"Tunnels designed to NFPA 502 are required to withstand the RWS time-temperature curve, more specifically prevent progressive spalling and loss of strength of steel reinforcement. Fire boards or spray-on layers can be effective, however, these solutions have capital and whole-life cost implications. The use of “fire resistant” concrete based on a suitable aggregate with polypropylene fibers has also increased in recent years. This article presents a new methodology for thermal and structural analysis of segmentally lined tunnels, which permits the analysis of project specific fire curves and an assessment of different fire protection strategies. The effectiveness of fire boards is assessed along with whether “fire resistant” concrete alone is a viable means of achieving the required protection. Finally, since NFPA 502 recommends water-based fixed fire-fighting systems for Category C and D tunnels, we discuss the question of how a fixed fire-fighting system should be addressed within the structural design. INTRODUCTION Protecting road tunnels from structural damage and collapse is a key requirement for both life safety and business continuity. Where road tunnels are part of key highway corridors, protecting business continuity is a high priority for owners, operators and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. For existing tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 may require upgrades with either passive fire protection and/or water-based fixed firefighting systems. For new tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 requires a combination of good practice in design and fire testing. A water-based fixed firefighting system is a Conditionally Mandatory Requirement1 for Class C and D tunnels, i.e. all tunnels greater than 300m and 1000m long respectively. The basis for fire safety design of new tunnels and assessment of existing tunnels is the worst-case fire scenario. A coupled solid and rock fracture mechanics model is used to analyze the blast driven fracture propagation phase, predict propagation rates, and directly measure shockwave and particle velocity. The study incorporates quasi-static pre-stress conditions for different depths below the surface. The scaled experiments include dynamic material properties and quasi-dynamic fracture mechanics which are shown to significantly affect the fracture propagation. The study was performed using three-dimensional cube-type laboratory models fabricated from Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The test cubes are loaded with explosives and resulting fracture networks are studied. The dynamic evaluation of the spatial crack system is monitored using a high speed image camera. An experimental model set-up is designed to indicate the pre-stress effect on deep borehole blasting and is shown that the pre-stress conditions have a decisive influence on fracture profiles and orientation. It is found that shockwaves rapidly exceed the slower dynamic fractures and a majority of cracks occur due to detonation pressure. Experimental testing using different parameters validate that explosive fracturing can predict the outcome of fracture and crack propagation in any rock type with known material properties. This can be accomplished under great stress conditions deep below ground surface. The experimental study results can be applied to a variety of industries such as mining and quarrying, tunneling, oil and gas, and construction.

Diesel-powered equipment is widely used in the underground mining industry and their popularity results from properties including efficiency, versatility, reliability, and durability. In the U.S. approximately 7,700 diesel engines were used in 177 underground metal and nonmetal mines as of 2005 [MSHA 2005], and these numbers have likely increased since that time. Diesel engines have been shown to be a major contributor to submicron carbonaceous, respirable, and total particulate mass in the air of underground metal mines [Zielinska et al. 2002, McDonald et al. 2003], and their extensive use results in approximately 13,000 underground metal/nonmetal (M/NM) miners (MSHA 2005) in the U.S. being potentially exposed to aerosols and gases emitted by diesel engines (MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006). Exposure to diesel exhaust has been linked to adverse health outcomes including cancer, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases (Attfield et al. 2012, Silverman et al. 2012), and in 2012 diesel exhaust was categorized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 1 human carcinogen (IARC 2012). Exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM) is especially concerning for underground miners since underground mine environments have been shown to have some of the highest levels of diesel exhaust in the U.S. (EPA 2002, MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006, Pronk et al. 2009). Due to the potential for elevated DPM concentrations in mines, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule to limit exposures of metal/ nonmetal underground miners to DPM to an eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA) of 160 μg/m3 total carbon (TC) (MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006, MSHA 2008). Since this rule went into effect, DPM exposures have been reduced, but are still elevated when compared to other occupations (Pronk et al. 2009, Noll et al. 2015). MSHA compliance data between 2005 to the present show that underground blasters represent 21% of all DPM overexposures in M/NM mines and are one of the highest exposed professions in mining often resulting from low ventilation in the area where blasters are working. Because mines have difficulty controlling DPM in these low ventilation areas, additional control technologies may be needed to reduce exposures. Administrative controls, where miners work on off schedules or upstream of diesel vehicles to avoid the exposures to DPM (Noll et al. 2015) is one possibility, but these types of solutions are not always feasible or practical. A canopy air curtain is another potential control technology to help reduce exposures of blasters to DPM. Listak and Beck (2012) showed that this control technology reduced respirable dust concentration under a roof bolter’s canopy by 67%–75% and recommended air velocities greater than 0.5 m/s for dust reductions of greater than 50%. Additional work showed that a canopy air curtain could be designed for a shuttle car, and some initial testing by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed reductions of respirable mine dust between 66% to 70%. As seen in Figure 1, the canopy air curtain delivers clean air over the operator’s breathing zone. A fan draws in air through a filter to capture the dust and then supplies clean air beneath the canopy where a miner is working. The use of the canopy air curtain to reduce exposures to diesel particulate matter was first discussed by Noll et al. (2020). In this study the diesel canopy air curtain (DCAC) reduced the DPM concentrations under the canopy by up to 90%. For this research the DCAC was designed to attach to the basket cover of an ammonium nitrate fuel oil ( ANFO) loader (Figure 2) and provide clean air blowing over the miners as they work in the basket. The initial tests used clean air drawn from the mine’s intake and did not try to filter the DPM from the air. Filtering DPM has extra challenges when compared to filtering mine dust particles. The particles of DPM are smaller (submicron and nanometer) than dust particles (greater than 1 micron); therefore, the filtration system must be adjusted to capture submicron particles. A MERV 13 filter was used in previous canopy air curtain research on mine dust control, but this filter is only designed to capture 50%–75% of submicron particles, and this capture efficiency is too low for removing DPM, so a higher efficiency filter is needed. Higher efficiency filters increase the pressure across the filter media which results in decreased airflow or leaks around the filter and reduces the effectiveness of the control for protecting miners from DPM. The optimal filter needs to capture DPM particles at a high efficiency while still allowing the needed airflows to prevent contaminated air from entering the miner’s breathing zone. Listak and Beck (2012) recommended velocities greater than 0.5 m/s for dust reductions of greater than 50%. However, airflows too high have been shown to reduce miners’ thermal comfort; Roghanchi et al. (2016) suggest the optimal velocity for thermal comfort is between 1–2 m/s. Thus, airflow over the miner should be limited to the range of 0.5 to 2.0 m/s. This current study presents the results from research evaluating the reduction of DPM concentrations, under the DCAC, when using a higher efficiency filter (MERV 16) to remove DPM from the DCAC airstream.

The productivity in coal mines, measured in terns of the output per manshift depends largely on the efficiency and speed of men and materials transport between working faces and the surface. The mechanization of coal winning and material handling processes has led to a great rise in the mine productivity (1). Early applications of power in U. S. coal mines were mainly electrical. The excellent traction available with the DC motor and the ease of the distribution of the DC power have made trolley wire installations for haulage very popular. In shallow mines with very limited emissions of methane it did not constitute a major hazard but as mine depths increased and corresponding emissions of methane also increased fire and methane ignition hazards have become very serious. Conveyors have proved economic where intense mechanization of coal faces generates a large output of coal from a single face, but the fire and respirable dust hazard associated with them are no less serious. Recognizing these shortcomings, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 laid down numerous provisions for the safe use of trolley-wire haulage and conveyors (2) which generally improve safety but in some cases complicate mining operations and have decreased productivity significantly since 1969. In course of time as coal mines become deeper and hence gassier and as the emphasis on safety increases it would be inconceivable to use trolley-wire haulage under ground as already witnessed in several other countries with deep coal mines. With rising capital investments and cost of the protection against fire and respirable dust, the use of conveyors may also have to be limited to special areas, e.g. main entries. Indeed, there are only two alternatives available, namely; (1) Degasify the coal seams prior to mining and use conventional electrical power, or (2) Develop alternate sources of power which would be safer and yet efficient and cheap.

"A walk through the exhibit hall or a glance at the technical programing that was offered at the 2019 SME Annual Conference & Expo and CMA 121st National Western Mining Conference in Denver, CO, Feb. 24-27 makes it evident that the mining industry is an innovative one that is on the cutting edge of technology. However, a glance at the nearly 6,700 attendees of the conference and it is also evident that while the industry is moving forward at a rapid pace in some areas, it is lagging behind in terms of diversity, both in gender and ethnicity.At Monday morning’s keynote session, Hannah Ubi, a millennial and a public speaker who joked that she is the proud owner of a sixth-place swimming trophy and a number of participation medals, addressed a full house that consisted of many men with gray hair or balding heads. The issue of an aging workforce that is rapidly being depleted by retirements is not a new one for the mining industry. In fact, it has been a concern for the industry for more than a decade. The central question has long been, “when the current senior-level people begin to retire, how do we replace them, and how do we fill the knowledge gap that is walking off into the sunset?” SME has been on the front lines in searching for solutions to the impending problem and, along with industry partners, has worked hard to develop programs that will address these issues. Among other efforts, the Society has developed a Ph.D. fellowship program to encourage people to remain in academia to teach the next generation and to help train the next generation to take over in the private sector.“The SME Foundation’s Ph.D. and Career Development Grant program is exceeding expectations at this point with two Ph.D. students graduating and taking a position in academia and two professors achieving tenure,” SME Executive Director Dave Kanagy said during the conference.The Society’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) has done its part to help educate future generations about the mining industry with initiatives like EngineerGirl, the Boy Scout Merit Badge and Move Mining, the Shark-Tank-style competition that was held on Monday with five finalists competing for the top prize (ME, April 2019, page 53)."

Optical fibers have revolutionized the telecommunication industry, because of their ability to transmit large amounts of data over long distances. Without optical fibers many of the communication technologies on which business, industry and research rely would be impossible. In addition to their use as communication devices, optical fibers are often used as sensors. Despite the great promise that optical fibers have for the development of many types of remote sensing devices, few remote sensing devices have been built for use in the mineral industries. This paper will describe the use of optical fibers as sensors for surfactant adsorption at mineral surfaces.

The compositions and natures of the materials charged to a blast furnace, as well as their respective distributions within the furnace, are known to int1uence furnace performance. The Wing Hill Garnet Deposit, located near Rangeley, Maine, forsed through assimilation of Early Paleozoic metasediments by an intrusive Devonian gabbro. The resulting ore body is exceptionally large and high-grade, consisting of 50-70% almandine garnet. Following open-pit quarrying, the ore is trucked to Industrial Garnet Extractives' mill in West Paris for final processing. Two grades of abrasive are produced - a pure, premium grade INDUSTRIAL GARNET and the Lower grade co-product IGE UTILITY GRIT, both of which are available in a variety of sizes. INDUSTRIAL GARNET is marketed world- wide into a diverse marketplace including both loose grain and bonded applications.
