The number of variables which can effect flotation of molybdenite is very large. This paper discusses the effect of two operating variables, namely, the degree of aeration and agitation, on the grade and recovery of molybdenite. A series of factorially designed flotation tests were carried out in a "Leeds Automatic Laboratory Flotation Cell." The analysis of flotation results indicate that molybdenite can be characterized into fast-floating and slow-floating components. The rates of fast-floating components, which do not create a problem in flotation, could be varied by changing agitation of airflow rates. However, the rate of slow-floating components was stable and was only a function of residence time in the float machine. The degree of aeration has a significant effect on the grade of MoS2 with only a slight effect on the recovery of MoS2. The degree of agitation has a slight effect on the grade, but does not effect the recovery of molybdenite. The implications of the results on the design of flotation cells and control and optimization of the existing circuits is subsequently discussed.

The publication of the Lerchs Grossmann paper in 1965 outlining a threedimensional graph algorithm for ultimate pit definition set the standard for the mining industry regarding pit optimization. Although the algorithm provides a solution from a static standpoint (i.e., assumes instantaneous mining), it is widely used for commercial packages to generate ultimate pit limits and intermediate phases. However, the solutions delivered are presented in canned reports lacking connection to the original data, which prevents further data analysis and extended reporting. The approach presented in this paper attempts to overcome such barriers by performing openpit optimization through databases. An adaptation of the Lerchs Grossmann graph algorithm is used to generate nodes, arcs and tree structures in customized tables to determine the maximum closure of a graph.

The coming years should see moderate growth in the US coal industry. That growth may come at the expense of the oil and natural gas industries. Conoco pegs coal growth at 2% a year, until the year 2000. During that same period, Conoco projects only 0.5% annual oil growth and "a flat or negative trendline" for natural gas. This is compounded by the fact that coal has a delivered cost per Btu that is only half as much as it is for natural gas and only a third as much as it is for oil. So said Ralph Bailey to many of the 2600 attending the opening session of the American Mining Congress Coal Convention, May 12-15, in Pittsburgh, PA. Bailey is chairman of the AMC. He is also chairman of Conoco. While coal's projected growth is not spectacular, "it is in fact almost an assured growth," Bailey said. Weak oil and gas prices will likely prevent faster growth for US coal. Most of coal's increased demand will come from the electric utility industry and expanded steam coal exports. Conoco's study projects that domestic coal demand will be strengthened in the 1990s. By then, the present surge of nuclear power plant constuction will be over. And there will be a lack of acceptably priced, large-scale generation alternatives for utilities. "It is not likely that any electric utility is going to be ordering new nuclear reactors," Bailey said. "And as oil and gas supplies become scarcer and more costly, it is only logical that coal is going to fill the gap." At the same time, Bailey believes the US coal industry must find ways to lower its costs. He said cost excesses can be found in "regulatory overkill, labor, and simply bad habits" hidden by years of high inflation. "Those costs have now been laid bare, because we are going through a pe¬riod of disinflation. We have to put our house in order, particularly if we are going to compete in world markets." Bailey also touched on coal research. "The industry certainly accepts the fact that we must find a way to burn coal as cleanly as possible. A lot of work in that regard is going on. I expect there will be some significant break-throughs." Bailey said the coal industry is being squeezed this year. Last year, coal customers accumulated inventories in anticipation of a major coal strike that never materialized. Now, many utility customers are working down these inventories. So they are not taking deliveries on their coal contracts. But coal use is up in 1985, compared with 1984, Bailey said. So increased coal use, along with supply drawdown, should strengthen the coal market before the year is out, he said. After Bailey's presentation, some 100 speakers addressed policy and technical topics at 15 sessions during the four-day meeting. It was the first time since 1977 that the AMC Coal Convention has been held in Pittsburgh. And this year's attendance was up 40% from the last AMC Coal Convention held two years ago in St. Louis, MO. This year's registrants included 228 companies, 225 manufacturers, and 106 associated members. The only negative was the David Lawrence Convention Center. It was less than ideal. By turns, meeting rooms were too small, too cramped, or too far from one another. The session on longwall mining was so crowded that the doors were propped open so conference delegates could peer in. A concurrent manufacturers' forum session needed 50 more chairs to accommodate those wanting to attend. However, on to summaries of some of the presentations. Coal transportation and export Since Congress approved the 1980 Staggers Rail Act, railroad rates for hauling coal have not been excessive. In fact, rail rates for coal have increased less than 0.5% a year, in real terms, since 1980. Moreover, the market oriented principles written into Staggers are contributing to the improved financial and operational health of the nation's railroads. But no railroad is earning excessive profits. That is the gist of a coal transportation study being completed by the US Department of Energy. William Vaughan is DOE's assistant secretary for fossil energy. He affirmed the thrust of the upcoming report. Vaughan did allow that Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) regulations on rate reasonableness could permit the railroads to exploit their monopoly power on captive shippers. Discrete Element Method (DEM) software has been successfully used to simulate various machine/soil interactions and provide insight for industries such as mining and bulk material processing. This paper will investigate typical calibration techniques used in particle models for DEM simulation and physical calibration experiments with soft ground TBM cutting tools to incorporate parameters such as tool drag forces that contribute to required TBM torque. With a well calibrated DEM model, it is expected that TBM simulation results will be more meaningful and provide better insight into TBM performance, power requirements, cutting tool placement, and overall cutter head design.

The article deals with the use of a digital twin in the assessment and optimization of a conveyor system in the Chilean copper mine. This example shows that a digital twin is initially just a new (albeit powerful) tool with which the system behavior can be examined. The benefits for the customer arise through the system identification and automatic detection of critical deviations from the target state. This knowledge allows mine management to react and coordinate operational and/or maintenance counter measures to insure optimal performance of their conveyor system. The information derived from the BeltGenius digital twin also allows mine management to gain a clear perspective of the overall efficiency of their conveyors, which will be invaluable for future conveyor component selections.

This paper examines the likely productivity improvements that have resulted from the introduction of technological advances in underground coal mining during the decade from 1977 to 1987. Included in these advances are the changes in longwall mining; the introduction of larger, more reliable, more repairable continuous miners and shuttle cars; the introduction of remote control and flooded-bed scrubbers; supersections; and other improvements. Procedural improvements are also examined and quantified, the unexplained gains in productivity are attributed to??other factors", among them an increasing maturity of the work force, stabilization of the mining laws, increased labor-management co-operation, and economic urgency.

Blasting generates undesirable ground vibration with adverse effects on humans, the environment, and structures. Numerous studies have used various techniques including machine learning (ML) to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV) caused by blasting in surface mines. These studies used the validation-set approach to evaluate the performance of their predictive models. In this study, Random Forest (RF), Gaussian Process (GP), and Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM) were applied for the prediction of PPV using data from a large open-pit gold mine in Ghana. An ensemble model based on a stacked generalization approach was then built on these three base models to significantly improve the PPV prediction performance. The model evaluation was done using repeated tenfold cross-validation which resolves the challenges with the validationset approach for small datasets. The dataset used in this study comprised a total of 196 measurements taken from different blasting operations. R-squared ( R2 ), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used to evaluate the model performance. The results obtained from these models revealed that all the base models did not significantly outperform each other. However, the stacked generalization approach had a better performance, with RMSE = 0.12, R2 = 0.96, and MAE = 0.07. This approach presented an improvement over the existing methods and will be useful for highly accurate predictions of ground vibration during blast design. The application of this model will be useful for efficient and effective blast design.

Production at Freeport Indonesia's Ertsberg open pit copper/gold mine started in 1972 at a rate of 7500 t/d. Mill throughput remained at that rate for a number of years until the discovery of the Ertsberg East (GBT) orebody. This discovery prompted three successive expansion stages from 1981 to 1988 that boosted production to 20,000 t/d. The discovery of the huge Grasberg porphyry copper deposit in 1988 launched a new era of much larger expansions. The first of these involved installation of a fourth primary mill in 1989 to bring production up to 32,000 t/d and was immediately followed by an expansion of the crushing and screening plant and the addition of a new south concentrator to bring production to 57,000 t/d in 1991. The addition of a primary ball mill and the changeout of the original Denver flotation cells in 1993 has served to optimize current production at a level of 66,000 t/d. A major expansion is now in progress. This includes construction of another new concentrator to house a SAG mill circuit and large Wemco flotation cells in an area created by the removal of 6,000,000t of glacial material. This current expansion, with a planned completion in 1995, will take production to 115,000 t/d. This paper describes the evolution of the Freeport Indonesia (FI) concentrator to-date and will then go into an in-depth discussion of the 66,000 and 115,000 t/d expansions.

The Atlas Concentrator, reputedly the largest in the Far East today, is located on the island of Cebu in the Republic of the Philippines. It started operation on a 4000 TPD capacity in 1955. An expansion program, coupled with significant improvements both in the Crushing Plant and the Mil, made the Atlas Concentrator what it is today, treating about 14,000 tons of ore per day at a comparatively low cost of about $0.50 per ton treated. The Atlas Copper Mine is at present mainly an open pit operation, with ore supplied from two pits (Lutopan and Biga) north of the Concen¬trator. Development of an Underground Mine, situated on the main ore body at Lutopan, which will be a block caving operation, has been underway since 1963, and this underground mining operation is expected to b e in full production by the latter part of 1966.

This paper reviews the past 18 months of geostatistical work in a coal deposit performed jointly by the University of Arizona and the Homer City Owners. The objective of the study was to better predict the in-seam sulfur values of the deposit for the purpose of future emission control. Based on initially available 112 DDH information, variogram models were developed for Sulfur, Ash and Thickness for the entire deposit. The deposit was then kriged using 333 m x 333 m (1000 ft x 1000 ft) panel size. The estimation variance information obtainable from geostatistics was next utilized to improve the development drilling activities that were underway. The results of this effort are presented in this paper. In addition, this paper describes (1) the reasons for preferring kriging over the conventional isopachs, (2) the results of empirical validation of the kriged estimates using 19 additional DDH information, and (3) up-to-date experience on the use of conditional simulation of the same deposit for the future emission control strategy development.

This study tests the ability of a new air nozzle system, located under the drill deck shroud, to improve the dust capture of the drill deck shroud. The system consists of three air nozzles supplied with regulated pressurized air and located midway down the shroud in the off-inlet corners of the shroud. Laboratory testing produced operating curves for the system that showed an optimum operating point of 207 kPa (30 psi) and generated respirable dust reductions of 48% to 52% from the drill deck shroud.

"The reduction behavior of low-grade lump hematite ore (100% 20-50 mm) has been evaluated by performing a series of coal-based direct reduction roasting tests followed by magnetic separation under different process conditions such as roasting time, temperature, reductant type and dosage, and grinding stage. To investigate mineralogical transformation and reduction characteristics of lump hematite ore, roasted ores and magnetic concentrates were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and polarizing microscope. The results have shown that a magnetic concentrate with a total iron (TFe) grade of 90.7% was produced at an iron recovery of 83.9% when lump hematite ore was reduced at 1,200° C for five hours using 35% lignite as a reductant followed by two stages of grinding, for 20 min and 30 min each, and low-intensity magnetic separation. The degree of reduction is closely related to the change in the internal structure of the roasted ore. Lignite with a higher fixed carbon content and lower ash generated roasted ore with a more highly porous structure, which provides better permeability of reducing gas. Magnetite, fayalite and wustite were the dominant intermediates of coal-based direct reduction of lump hematite ore. Parts of wustite reacted with SiO2 or Al2O3 in gangue and generated fayalite or hercynite. FeO in fayalite was replaced by CaO to produce wustite, which was finally reduced to metallic iron. However, Fe in fayalite and hercynite produced with low contents of CaO cannot be reduced into metallic iron. Introduction Low-grade hematite ore, characterized by low Fe content and high SiO2 content, cannot be treated by traditional mineral processing methods due to its nonmagnetic property and fine liberation size. The direct reduction (DR) roasting process has been studied and proven satisfactory in treating difficult-toprocess ores, such as low-grade nickel laterite oxide ore (O’Connor et al., 2006; Cao et al., 2010; Guo et al., 2011), high phosphorus oolitic hematite ore (Li et al., 2012; Yu et al., 2013), low-grade hematite ore (Wei et al., 2013;) and iron ore tailings (Li et al., 2010), which greatly expand the resources of usable iron ores (Srivastava and Kawatra, 2009). Therefore, the use of a DR process to treat low-grade hematite ore to produce direct reduced iron (DRI) is of great interest to many researchers of mineral processing and metallurgy (Weissberger et al., 1986)."

A unique freeze conditioning agent (FCA) which functions by forming structurally weak ice rather than suppressing the freezing point of water has been successful in alleviating frozen coal problems. Frozen coal treated with FCA has been quickly unloaded at temperatures below -17.SoC (O°F). Other areas where FCA has found utility has been de-icing conveyor belts, idler, idler arms and other moving parts that have been impeded by ice.

Although alumina constitutes about ii percent of the earth's crust, it is expensive to separate and purify for the production of aluminum with the exception off the alumina in bauxite. The United states has a variety of non-bauxite resources that could substitute for bauxite, including high alumina clays, alunite, dawsonite in oil shale, anorthosite, and nepheline syenite. Each of these resources are discussed from the standpoint of geology, geography, processing, potential recovery, and environmental problems. Potential by-products include silica from clays, potash and sulfuric acid from alunite, soda ash from dawsonite, and soda ash and potash from anorthosite and nepheline syenite.

Filtration of copper concentrates in the mining industry is carried out in cycles, mainly cake formation, expression, and blowing. Each of these cycles depends on the solid (mineralogy, porosity, particle size distribution), water, and air (density, viscosity, permeability, and relative permeability) properties that define the performance in each cycle. The fundamental phenomenon in cake formation and expression is a one-phase flow (water) through a porous bed of solid particles (the cake), while in blowing it is a two-phase flow (water and air) through the cake. Sometimes, due to a change in the properties of the mineral, a filtration plant is unable to maintain the capacity at the specified humidity. One alternative to solve this problem is to heat the air during the blowing cycle, which in turn heats the water in the cake, this process significantly decreases the water viscosity and only marginally increases the air viscosity. In this work, this strategy was studied at a laboratory scale. The results show a significant decrease in the blowing time as the temperature of the air was increased.

The Federal Surface Mining Law enacted in 1978 is now being translated into regulations which must be followed in future coal mining. Substantial change to mining procedures is required to maintain stricter air and water control while mining and to return the mined out land to equal or better use than before. These changes do not come easy; and in most cases, they create a substantial additional cost. Based on field observations and mining studies, Caterpillar has been making suggestions on the use of their types of equipment to conform to the new standards at the least cost. This paper will be a brief review of some of the overburden stripping and reclamation methods suggested by Caterpillar. A production and cost comparison of dragline, scraper/dozer and truck, loader systems in 20 to 150 ft. Overburden conditions illustrates potential cost savings using mobile equipment.

A description will be given of an approach to plant process automation based on the strategy of first developing an information system followed by later development of process models. The advantages of this approach over the unit process control will be outlined. Some insight will be given into the risks associated with this method. These risks can be shown to be primarily economic.' Some reference will be made to two Cominco installations in the interests of illustrating the generality of the information systems approach.

"With the depletion of easily minable coal seams, less favorable reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand. Due to several historical reasons, a large amount of remnant coal was left unrecovered. One such case history occurs with the remnant rectangular stripe coal pillars using partial extraction method at Guandi Coal Mine, Shanxi Province, China. The challenge that the coal mine is facing is that there is an ultra-close coal seam right under it, with an only 0.8 to 1.5 m sandstone dirt band in between the two. The simulation study was carried out to investigate the simultaneous recovery of upper remnant coal pillars while mining the ultra-close lower panel using longwall top coal caving (LTCC). The remnant coal pillar was induced to cave in as top coal in LTCC system. Physical modelling shows that the coal pillars are the abutments of the stress arch structure formed within the overburden strata. The stability of overhanging roof strata highly depends on the stability of the remnant coal pillars. The gob development (roof strata cave-in) is intermittent with the cave-in of these coal pillars and the sandstone dirt band. FLAC3D numerical modelling shows that the multiple seam interaction has a significant influence on mining-induced stress environment for mining of lower panel. The pattern of the stress evolution on the coal pillars with the advance of the lower working face was found. This demonstrates that the stress relief of a remnant coal pillar enhances the caveability of the pillars and sandstone dirt band below them.INTRODUCTIONChina is one of the world’s coal-rich countries. Coal has played a significant role in the growth of China’s economy. Coal reserves have been mined commercially in China for over one hundred years. The demand for coal in China is still going to grow at a relatively high rate (BP Energy Outlook, 2019). Long-term large-scale and intensive coal mining activities have created tension between increased demand and limited resources (Bai et al., 2018). Easily minable coal seams such as sub-horizontal, tabular, and laterally extensive coal seams are being depleted, and therefore the remaining reserves are becoming less favorable. However, in many situations, the coal reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand for energy.Due to sedimentary environments and geological conditions, many coal seams are interspersed with sedimentary bands, or partings both within an individual seam and between seams. These bands and partings lead to appearance of ultra-close coal seams, as well as giving rise to considerable variation in their structural and mechanical properties (Ghabraie and Ren, 2016). Difficulties are encountered in the mining of such coal seams. If ultra-close coal seams are mined sequentially, that requires the design of a mining system for each individual coal seam; also, a large number of gateroads have to be excavated, which is not a high-efficiency option. If ultra-close coal seams are mined at a great mining height at once, for instance, using longwall top coal caving—a longwall mining method that is widely used in China for the mining of ultra-thick coal seams—then the location and characteristics of the band would have a significant influence on success of their extraction."
