In the present work compared flotation kinetics of apatite with four different collectors was established. Sodium oleate and rice bra~ oil were used to represent conventional collectors. The new collectors included a sulfosuccinate and a sulfosuccinamate. It was observed that the collection ability of each reagent was very dependent upon the mineral size ranges. The results-were analyzed in terms of size-by-size recovery curves. Flotation rates were also very dependent on size ranges of the mineral particles. One of the new collectors displayed higher flotation rates for coarser particles than the other reagents tested. Synergetic effects were also apparent when a conventional collector was mixed to a new collector.

For many years tin mining in Bolivia has been very important to the economy of the country. In recent years the tin content of the ore reserves has been steadily declining. An improvement in concentration efficiency is highly desirable in order to increase productivity from the present-low-grade mine ores and to allow retreatment of the many millions of tons of tailings from past operations, some of which equal the present ores in tin content. A number of investigators have been or at present are working on various phases or approaches to the problem. Gravity concentration is used in Bolivia today as it has been in the past to recover tin minerals from the mine ores. An objective of the work reported in this paper was to examine the possibility of treating present low-grade ores and sink-float tailings products, at a relatively coarse grind, in order to produce a higher grade feed material to the present gravity concentration plants. The possibility of using heavy liquids in cyclones to treat large tonnages with a minimum of outlay presented itself and is of particular interest since appropriate heavy liquids are available and with physical properties which lend themselves to simple recovery methods. Tests were carried out using a closed circuit laboratory cyclone assembly. It was desirable to determine the value of using the SG50 concept and Tromp curves for analyzing the cyclone concentration test results. The effects of entrained water on the behavior of ore particles in the cyclone were examined.

Methods to increase the gas penetration through sinter layers. In the field of agglomeration, sintering has gained importance, specially in Europe; in Best-Europe this trend will continue till the year 1980, since it is quite probable that in the blast furnace burdens with 50-60 sinter, 10-20 % pellets and 20-25 % ore lumps will be employed. In order to meet this demand for sinter, new sinter bands with reaction areas between 300-400 m2 will be constructed. Chemical and physical phenomena during the Suction-Draught-sinter process. Iron ore sintering is generally considered as a burning process where the material contains 90-95 % ash i.e. non-combustible ingredients. Sintering represents a heterogeneous exothermic reaction in which the chemical phenomena as combustion, calcination, hydration, reduction and oxydation are superposed by physical phenomena. The physical phenomena are devided into material transport and simultaniously occurring heat transport processes. The velocity of these combined physico-chemical reactions i.e. the change in the reaction site per unit time determine the efficiency of the sinter process. The gas permeability as an important criterion of heat transport during the Suction-Draught sinter process.

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year. The maximum annual production is 15 million metric tons per panel _The mining method employed in such panel is a combination of top-coal caving mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique, which is suitable for seam height between 12–20 m, as shown in Figure 1. Experience from Australia had identified what is referred to as nonconventional surface subsidence behavior. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence,” and far-field horizontal movements, occurring even beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behavior recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam, leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900 ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 to 720 ft. Investigations, including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program, found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and farfield horizontal movements may have occurred, resulting from the adjacent mining. Besides discussing the phenomenon of nonconventional subsidence behavior and the Ryerson State Park case study, this paper includes an assessment of the mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioral mechanisms.

Stall or aerodynamic stall of axial-flow fans has long been recognized as an important operational problem in mine ventilation. To develop a technique for characterizing fan stall in multiple-fan ventilation networks, a research project was initiated through the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Mine Systems Design and Ground Control. Considering that fan stall is related to multiple operating points, this paper discusses a numerical model for multiple-fan ventilation networks, design of the experimental setup for two-and three-fan ventilation networks, and numerical methods for solving multiple networks solutions. It is hoped that the results of this project will lead to an innovative method of ventilation network analysis and simulation, thus preventing stall.

This paper is not focused on the project itself, however, the emphasis is on experiences gained from the project. The Mokelumne Aqueducts Resiliency Project (MARP) involves construction of a 16.5-mile tunnel across the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta) to replace the existing surface aqueduct pipelines with more resilient conveyance. The tunnel will be bored in Pleistocene-age alluvium at elevations between 100 to 10 feet below mean sea level. At this depth ground conditions are signicantly stiffer and denser than surcial soils and will mitigate potential seismic harards related to liquefaction ground shaking and cooding that could arise from potentially damaged levees. The heterogeneous soil deposits at tunnel depth consist of interbedded layers of stiff to very stiff clay and silt, and dense to very dense clean sand and silty sand.

The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in Spring 1988, just one year prior to the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg open pit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600m above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought their latest open pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. This paper describes the start-up of the operation, highlighting synergies drawn from both the original Ertsberg experiences and the current Freeport Indonesia underground mines.

Abstract. The shaft was drilled on U.S. Government land in the Piceance Creek Basin and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. It was drilled to 723 meters (2 371') to provide access to rich deposits of oil shale, nahcolite and dawsonite for geotechnical test work and environmental mining research. Rotary drilling and dual string, reverse-air, jet-assist circulation methods were used. Drilling required 8 months. Site preparation, running and cementing the casing required another 4 months. A 2.44-meter (96-inch) ID steel welded casing, 5.1 cm (2 inches) thick was installed and 2 700 tonnes (63 000 sacks) of cement were slurried and pumped into the annulus.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the dry grindability of calcite powders in a vertically and horizontally orientable laboratory batch type stirred mill. The experimental results were evaluated using stress intensity analysis. The performance was also compared in terms of mill orientation. The results showed that the d50 values decreased with increasing stress energy down to a certain point and then increased for both milling orientations. Even though the optimum stress energies for both vertical and horizontal orientations were in the range of 1*10−3 to 5*10−3 Nm at 750 and 1500 kJ/kg energy consumption, the product size was finer for the horizontal orientation at the same stress energy value. Additionally, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to compare mill orientation (vertical vs. horizontal) for the same mill and under the same test conditions.

Chemical zoning studies of mineralization can be useful in guiding exploration efforts. They permit one to determine the limits of mineralization and to correlate mineralized intervals in drill holes. Fahlore minerals are well suited for zoning studies because they are common minerals found in a variety of deposits, exhibit chemical diversity, and record the chemical evolution of migrating hydrothermal fluids. Zoning information in the form of metal ratios preserved in fahlore minerals was used to determine ore body limits in the Orcopampa precious metal system, Peru, and to correlate between multiple ore horizons in a sediment hosted massive sulfide (SHMS) currently under investigation. The current generations of electron microprobes provide the most efficient, accurate and economic way to analyze the tens to hundreds of sample required to successfully describe and use zoning information at the mine scale.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted research to develop improved guidelines for selecting the type and pattern of roof support in different geologic environments. The goal is to minimize the over and under design of mine roof support, resulting in more productive and safer mines. To obtain the necessary data on roof behavior and support performance, USBM conducted several field studies. Each study covers roof geology, stress regime, ground reaction, support interaction and mining environment. A consistent experimental design is being used. This includes measurements of roof bolt loads and roof movements. So far, 10 studies have been conducted in several geologic settings.

"1.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on the Lee Tunnel project, which is part of the Thames Water’s Tideway Project.The client Thames Water has employed a Joint Venture of Morgan Sindall/Vinci Grand Projets and Bachy Soletanche to undertake the design and construction of the project under the management of CH2M Hill at a value in excess of £635 million ($990 million). The 3 main elements of the tunnel project are the permanent lining to the shafts, the precast segmental lining, and the secondary tunnel lining. All 3 are reinforced with different types of Dramix steel wire fibers and each element will be described in this paper. This paper will explain the basic structural design of FRC (Fiber reinforced concrete) based on the post cracking residual strength and will describe all the steps of this project, the testing program realized to support innovative design and the main technical learning point. 2.BASIC CONCEPT OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF FRCStructural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiberreinforcement. Other cases, like early age crack-control or fire resistance, are considered non-structural use of FRC. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Fibers can be used to improve the behavior at SLS (Service Limit State) since they can reduce crack spacing and crack width, thereby improving durability and they can be used to improve the behavior at ULS (Ultimate Limit State) where they can partially or totally substitute conventional reinforcement in most conditions. In the design process, the definition of the performance expected from the material is a key factor and the mix-design of the material has to be optimized for the required structural performance.2.1 Testing Method In order to ascertain the structural requirements requested for the FRC segments, preliminary testing on samples will be required and the effectiveness of the proposed solution will also be assured by the testing of full scale specimens. Structural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiber reinforcement. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Nominal values of the material properties can be determined by performing a 3-point bending test on a notched beam according to EN14651 (figure 1) or by performing the ASTM C1609 beam test:"

You here are all familar with the myriad of new laws, some enacted and some pending, that affect the mining industry. These laws, for example those dealing with suspended matter, affect us in Alaska as they do you. Likewise, our friends in government, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, provide us with the same fine services that they do elsewhere. I am not going to speak today about these, but concentrate on one act of Washington, D.C. the impact of which is felt, for now at least, principally in Alaska. A little more than a year ago, I spoke in Spokane on the subject, "Governmental Challenge to Mineral Development in Alaska." I outlined some of the policies of Government which were operating to change the rules under which the industry operates and to alter the relation- ship between government, industry, and the individual. At that time the Native Claims Settlement Act had not been passed, but was on the verge of being so. In reading over what I said in Spokane, I note that I touched on many points where Government was actually challenging mineral development in Alaska. With the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, many of these actions were given a cloak of legality, and machinery was set up to concentrate the drive to tie up the public domain, machinery which will allow govern- mental control and interference with the actions of individuals on something like 90% of Alaska's land surface. This remarkable law is going to affect each and every one of you. Now, a year after its passage, we are only just beginning to see its lesson for the future. It was created by a coalition of powerful groups, who got other groups to support them by promising to deliver something they had no intention of delivering. Alaskan issues are again being used to get various groups not to oppose legislation which will severely harm them. It will help to understand the nature of this new drive if we understand the Native Claims Act and how it came into being.

In August 2011, the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) contacted mining institutes and related societies internationally to assess their interest in participating in coordination of the review of the South African Code for Mineral Valuation (SAMVAL) with reviews of other mineral valuation standards. The main mineral valuation standards are the CIMVal Standard of The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the VALMIN Code of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), the SAMVAL Code, and the extractive industries? guidance note of the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC), Valuation of Properties in the Extractive Industries, GN 14, designed for application within the full set of International Valuation Standards (IVSs). By January 2012, SAIMM had concluded that the level of respondent interest was adequate to organize a meeting. A meeting was scheduled for April 18, 2012 in Brisbane, Australia in conjunction with a VALMIN mineral valuation conference organized by the AusIMM. The stated purpose of the meeting was to develop an accord on terms of reference for pursuing harmonization of mineral asset valuation standards adopted by the participating mineral institutes. SME decided that, although it has not developed its own mineral valuation standard, it should participate in the Brisbane meeting and the harmonization process, as also did the American Institute of Minerals Appraisers (AIMA).

Of increasing importance to the student of fuels economics has been the extent to which different primary energy sources can substitute for each other in the various energy markets of the nation. Knowledge of the nature and extent of fuel interchangeability can aid the fuels economist in projecting trends of energy utilization, as well as giving him a better understanding of the past and present conditions of fuel markets. It is also important to the consumer to know just how much flexibility he can maintain in his energy consuming operations. And, finally, various governmental bodies show keen interest in the degree of energy substitutability in determining public policies concerning the fuels industries. The presence of excess fuel production capacity in the United States during the early 1960's indicates that fuel interchangeability should become more prevalent in the increasingly competitive energy markets of the nation. Discussion of fuel intercompetition is almost always restricted to qualitative terms-because of the lack of comparable statistical data, between the different energy sources in geographic or "type-of-use" fuel, markets. There are exceptions, of course, such as, the excellent fuel consumption data which are available on steam electric generating plants throughout the nation. In other sectors, statistics are at best incomplete.' Inmost instances, indirect fuel consumption indicators, such as sales of fuel burning equipment, are extensively used to measure market shares of a particular fuel; however, these indicators are hard to evaluate precisely without prior knowledge of the total competitive market.

This was one of the main reasons that led the California Legislature to enact the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1975 (SMARA). The 2-mile Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel was constructed in 1954 to then-current mining and construction standards. Due to its lifespan and deteriorating condition it is now being stabilized and rehabilitated using conventional excavation and ground support. At its southern end, below the prestigious Three Arch Bay community, the original tunnel alignment passes under a historic landslide where the tunnel was sand-backfilled and capped by bulkheads in 1957 due to severe and caving ground conditions. Video footage of the existing 21- inch clay pipe showed that the pipe is severely damaged, which could potentially cause a catastrophic pipeline failure and sewage spill into the Pacific Ocean. This paper summarizes the thorough investigation and design process, tunnel realignment construction and monitoring, and the notable cooperation between all parties to overcome the project risks.

"By the time the latest expansion of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) system, known locally as Metro and which opened in 1976, is completed in 2020, the system will serve 97 stations and operate on 188 km (117 miles) of track on six interconnecting lines. Metro provides a critical transportation link to a population of approximately six million people within a 3,900-km2 (1,500-sq-mile) Washington Metropolitan area and has allowed job growth to expand to all corners of the region. In the 1950s and 1960s, when the system was first conceived and construction began, most jobs were centered in downtown Washington, and most of the workforce commuted by bus or car. Today, transit-oriented development has increased residential, commercial and government facilities near most of the existing 91 stations increasing the importance of the Metro system as a critical transportation link for the region. According to recent American Public Transportation Association (APTA) data, Metro is the second busiest transit system in the United States (after New York City’s transit system).During the nearly 50 years of construction on the Washington Metro system, technology improvements and lessons learned from the global tunneling industry were implemented. Portions of this background and history have been adapted from other work by the authors Roach et al. (2017) and expanded for use herein. For soil tunnels, these improvements included the change from a “two-pass” tunnel lining with a typical initial lining of steel ribs with wood lagging or segmental precast lining erected within the tunnel shield followed by a final lining of cast-in-place concrete to a one-pass lining system of pre-cast concrete gasketed segmental lining. Soil tunnels were originally excavated using open-face tunnel shields, but changed over time. By the late 1980s, tunneling using closed, pressurizedface tunnel boring machines (TBMs) using a one-pass tunnel lining consisting of segmental precast concrete permitted tunneling in a wider range of soil conditions with much less risk of damaging overlying utilities or structures, greater safety for tunnel construction personnel and without the need to dewater the soils. However, due to concerns about conditioning clays with earth pressure balance (EPB) TBMs, open face machines were still favored by contractors for their better advance rates, lower cost and ability to deal with boulders that were occasionally encountered in the Coastal Plain Terrace Deposits."
