Slope failures very commonly occur during a long period of heavy rainfall and groundwater rise. The failures pose a substantial risk to people, infrastructure, and equipment downslope. In the recent past, the mining industry has faced an increase in tailings dam failure due to several reasons including pore pressure increases in the dams. Many failures have been observed to occur during times of water level fluctuations but the critical factors that influence the initiation of slope failures still need to be adequately clarified. To investigate these factors, laboratory experiments were conducted on model sandy slopes to determine pore pressure-induced slope failure initiation. This study also presents a method to examine water seepage through soil slopes using an ultraviolet (UV) dye and a UV flashlight. The small-scale model test simulation demonstrated failures induced by either water percolation from the upslope tank at a constant level or by raising the water level at intervals. A bottom chamber fully filled with water to replicate groundwater rise was also simulated. The soil slope was monitored at every stage to study the deformations and behavior until failure occurred. Results gathered from the controlled laboratory conditions were useful for the verification of the numerical modeling method created in the computer program Slide. The analysis showed that slope failure always occurred when the toe was fully saturated. High pore pressures and seepage forces reduce the shear force at the toe to almost zero causing it to slide. A comparison of slope height to water level also indicated an average of 96% water level to cause a failure. At this point, the soil slope is fully saturated and has no matric suction. The findings in this study show that, by monitoring the moisture content of slopes, failures can be predicted.

The Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project broke ground in August 2021, constructing the tallest Asphalt Core Dam in North America, intending to improve reliability of drinking water supply to Northern Colorado communities. Aiming to expedite and streamline the geological mapping process in the tunnel, Stantec’s teams have developed a mobile and web-based GIS application for digital mapping input and rock mass evaluation, allowing real time decision making for assigning tunnel support class and resulting in a faster more efficient process. The following article presents and demonstrates the GIS mobile and web application-based process, the mapping results and review additional uses of the database created.

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation's leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). The United States can expect to meet its future mineral needs in three basic ways: the first is through increased production of primary raw minerals; second by increasing imports from foreign sources; and third by recycling secondary materials and metals that were formerly discarded as waste. Over the last few years, the never-ending search for mineral wealth has taken the exploration efforts of Canadian mining companies further and further into the High Arctic and isolated locations where regularly scheduled transportation and communication facilities are nonexistent. Names such as Black Angel, Nanisivik, Asbestos Hill, New Quebec Raglan, Rabbit Lake, and Arvik are today frequently mentioned in mining publications. Twenty years ago, mining in these locations was unheard of, mainly due to logistic problems. However, improvements in the design and use of helicopters, STOL aircraft, and icebreakers in northern areas have helped to overcome these problems, making these locations more attractive to mining companies. Since 1969, when Redpath completed its first Arctic project at Texas Gulf's Scrathcona Sound property on the northern tip of Baffin Island, Redpath has been actively involved in contracting and engineering projects in three general areas: the High Arctic, Ungava and Greenland. A map showing some of these projects is shown in Figure 1. In these areas, permafrost conditions exist from a depth of 274 metres in Ungava to a depth of approximately 610 metres in the Little Cornwallis Island area, with rock temperatures ranging from -5°C to -13°C. Outside temperatures range from a low of -50°C in the winter to a high of 21°C in the summer. High winds in the winter result in wind chill factors lower than -73°C

Fuzzy logic and neural networks are new technologies being applied in many areas of engineering and business. While it is not always clear which kinds of problems are best suited to these technologies, and which problems are best approached with more standard methodologies, both fuzzy logic and neural networks appear to show great promise in the field of control systems. This paper demonstrates two advantages that these technologies offer: Easy controller design in the absence of a mathematical model of the plant to be controlled, and adaptive control capable of quickly responding to changes in the plant.

The International Mineral Valuation (IMVAL) Committee, founded in 2012, develops strategies for conducting mineral valuations. These strategies have been developed into a mineral asset valuation template called the International Mineral Property Valuation Standards Template and is part of IMVAL's work to establish consistent international standards for mineral property valuation and reporting. This template is a living document that is updated from time to time and is based on three core values or pillars (Fundamental Principles): Competence, Materiality, and Transparency. Objectivity, Independence, and Reasonableness may be applied as required by national codes or standards. The Template harmonizes international standards for valuation of mineral assets as real property and represents a consensus of current good practices. It is not a stand-alone reporting code and does not supersede existing national reporting standards. The Template deals with mineral-property valuation as distinct from mineral-project evaluation. INTRODUCTION In his 1989 book, “The New Realities”, Peter F. Drucker, Clark Professor of Social Science at Claremont Graduate School, California, stated: “Information is data endowed with relevance and purpose. Converting data into information thus requires knowledge. And knowledge, by definition, is specialized.” (p. 209) The discipline of mineral valuation is knowledge-based and requires a mineral valuer to collect, analyze, and interpret data that are material to a mineral valuation assignment. In so doing, the valuer turns the data into information (data come first, followed by information as determined by the mineral valuer) for use by the client (from whom the valuer obtained the mineral valuation assignment) and other intended users. The valuer uses his or her experience and education (each valuer’s knowledge base) supported by a foundation built upon competency, materiality, and transparency, the three pillars of mineral valuation (“minerals valuation”, “mineral-property valuation”). The International Mineral Valuation Standards Template (“IMVAL Template”, IMVAL”, “Template”), third edition dated May 2018, defines mineral valuation as: “The estimation of the Value of a Mineral Property in money or monetary equivalent. The word ‘valuation’ can be used to refer to the estimated value (the Valuation conclusion) or to refer to the preparation of the estimated Value (the act of valuing).” (p. 14) Furthermore, the IMVAL Template clearly separates valuation from evaluation: “The Template deals with Valuation, which is distinct from Evaluation. The distinction inherent in these defined terms is that Valuation addresses the estimation of value of a Mineral Property, whereas Evaluation addresses the broader assessment of a Mineral Property for an investment decision.” (p. 2)

Battery Electric Vehicles offer increased energy efficiency for open-pit load & haul operations at a potentially lower overall carbon cost. Electrifying a mine’s fleet, however, presents a unique set of operational challenges. In this study, we explore the effects of electrification on productivity at real operations using a Discrete Event Simulator. The model can simulate multiple shifts, a mixed fleet of diesel and electric trucks, charging and refueling stations, trolley systems, and accurate shovel-truck loading cycles. This study helps determine the trade-offs of adopting electric fleets and how they interact with the layout of today's mines.

Virtually all industries use sulphur in some form. About half of the world's production is used in the production of fertilizers. Sulphur is produced in one form or another in over sixty countries in the world. The major producing countries, in order of importance, are: U.S.A., Canada, U.S.S.R., Poland, Japan, France, Mexico, and Spain. Canada is the largest exporter of sulphur presently supplying about 30% of the world elemental sulphur export trade. It has held this position since 1968. World sulphur resources are virtually unlimited. Future world competition will come from Iraq and other Middle East countries as well as Central and South America.

The concept of using powdered coal-in-oil-mixtures (COM) as a composite fuel to conserve oil resources and relieve import supply problems is being vigorously promoted by the Department of Energy via the sponsoring of various demonstration units (1). The idea of COM as a useful alternative fuel has been explored on and off for over 100 years (2). The approach must be capable of grinding, mixing, storing, and combusting COM with presumably only minor equipment changes on oil-fired boilers. DOE estimates that 56 000 m3 of oil (350 000 barrels) could be spared daily if a 50-50 COM was used to generate electricity. Of course, the ability of COM suppliers to prepare and deliver a stable suspension of COM at reasonable economic costs must be achieved if the concept is to be successful. This report reviews the various methods used to attain stable coal-oil mixtures. Various physical-chemical principles associated with each method of stabilization are also discussed.

Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. concluded an exchange of land and reserves in an agreement signed May 3, 1999.This exchange of assets allowed Newmont to develop the Deep Post underground mine from within Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit, thus reducing capital expenditures, lowering operating costs, and advancing the production schedule by nearly three years. Based on previous experience, Newmont is confident that the Deep Post underground mine can be successfully developed and operated within a large, active, open pit mine. The project also faces difficult geotechnical conditions including weak ground, scattered pockets of groundwater, and elevated rock temperatures.

"The new metro line “C” entails the construction and rehabilitation of 24 stations and 21,5 km of metro line, 13 of which carried out underground; the new metro line will improve the transportation system of a congested city such as Rome.The new line “C” of San Giovanni metro station will be constructed adjacent to the existing line “A” of San Giovanni station; the new metro line “C” is deeper than line “A” and will underpass the existing station. The underpass project envisages an Artificial Ground Freezing in order to excavate two new tunnels, while keeping trains running in the safest possible condition.In order to allow trains to regularly run to and from the existing station’s line “A”, a temporary structure for rail support, during excavation of the under-crossing tunnels, was installed and a real-time monitoring system was devised in order to control both soil temperature during freezing activities and the existing station’s behavior. The monitoring system has been one of the key to the success of the project.The excavation of tunnels under the water table, with a hydraulic head of over 10 m in not homogeneous soils having different mechanical properties and permeability and below existing sensitive structures, involves special ground freezing sequences and methods, as well as peculiar drilling systems and operations, such as TDDT (Trevi Directional Drilling Technology).THE NEW “C” LINE OF ROME’S METROThe world’s most complex and extraordinary Metro System is currently being built in the heart of Rome. The purpose of this paper is to present validation studies of the mine-fire simulator using data gathered from an actual mine fire which occurred in November 1991 at the Pattiki Mine. To develop the model of the ventilation system with the fire in this validation study, the following adjustments were made: (1) flow and gas distribution in the entire ventilation network, and (2) fire parameters matching the data recorded by the monitoring system. After close correlations between simulation and real data were achieved, additional analysis of the ventilation system with the mine fire was performed. Presented and discussed in this paper are the following stages of the fire at the Pattiki Mine: (1) early fire (before the fire was detected), (2) preparation for and fire fighting with water, (3) fire sealing, and (4) fire extinguishing. This study evaluates the suitability of the computer software package for modeling underground fires. The paper also discusses the importance of the on-line monitoring system for the validation process.

I welcome the opportunity to meet with you and discuss the work and program of the Office of Coal Research. Our programs are oriented to serve the conservation objectives of the Johnson Administration and of the Nation by seeking out the most efficient and best uses for coal. We believe that even if only a portion of our program is successful, the coal industry and the Nation will benefit far out of proportion to our expenditures. Operating with a budget of $7,220,000 in Fiscal Year 1966, OCR sponsors contract research which offers potential for achieving benefits to the coal industry in the form of new production and new markets. This directs us into many areas of research activity: in coal combustion, in advancements in mining methods and coal preparation, in new uses for coal, and in associated economic and marketing research.

The New Lead Belt of Missouri, situated in the heart of the Clark National Forest, stands as a dynamic example of how mining activities can successfully coexist in a restricted wilderness area. After 16 years of intensive drilling activity, mine development and surface plant construction, many would agree that the mine-plant design philosophy of St. Joe has minimized the imbalancing effects to the ecology and the wilderness appearance of the Ozark area. In a recent dedication speech of St. Joe's newest operation, it was stated: 1 "this Brushy Creek Mine, as well as nearly all of the mines in this district, lies within the boundaries of the Clark National Forest. Here the Forest Service has an outstanding and realistic program for multi-use of Federal lands. Mining, lumbering, recreation and conservation coexist in, what I consider, a delightful wilderness environment. I believe that this same type of usage could be permitted on all government land without seriously detracting from its natural beauty." Each and every activity in the process of discovery, exploration, development and finally operating a mine and process mill could have drastically degraded some phase of nature's environment were it not for the well developed and executed plans of the mining people involved. This is not to say that everything has been kept in perfect balance; but most certainly the industrial impact on what was once a wilderness area has been held to a minimum. What follows is the story of how each phase of this gigantic development was handed by industry people. Through their interaction and cooperation with government agencies, educators and researchers, allowed not only the ecology of the area to be protected, but the aesthetic beauty of the Ozarks to remain intact.

G.M. Philip and D.F. Watson The article cited above reflects the difficulty that is often encountered in interpreting different aspects of kriging. Baafi et al. write : "Due to negative kriging weights, negative block grades may be obtained in some extreme situations, which makes no practical sense." Their solution to this particular problem is to constrain the kriged estimates to data values that have positive weights, i.e., reduce the subset size contributing to the estimation. As Journel (1986, p. 133) has already observed, "Negative weights are no evil." Indeed, they are an ineluctable result of the Lagrangian multipliers in the system of simultaneous equations. The fact that data distant from the estimation point may be given negative weights simply means that the influence of such distant values must be negated because their influence is contradictory to closer values (as illustrated by Baafi et al. in their Figs. 3 and 4). Of course negative kriging weights applied to distant grade values will not in themselves induce negative grade at some central interpolation point. Negative grade values, rather, seem to be a particular artifact of automatic methods of estimation involving accu¬mulations (Philip and Watson, 1985a, 1985b, 1987b). The elimination of negative weights, suggested by Baafi et al., is likely to exacerbate a quite different problem of kriging and piecewise spline interpolation discussed elsewhere (Philip and Watson, 1987a). In interpolating large data sets of scattered observations, changing local subsets or neighborhoods must be selected automatically. Because of the mathematical formulation of kriging and spline interpolation, discontinuities then occur between closely-spaced estimation points as the subset used in the estimation changes. If this subset is reduced in number and size, the discontinuities will be amplified and more common. ? Kim Before replying to the comments by Philip and Watson, it is desirable to establish the original perspective of our paper, which was intended primarily for the practitioners of mining who possess a working knowledge of ordinary kriging. The paper tried to convey the following practical points: (1) there are circumstances in which one observes negative weights, (2) illustration of circumstances under which one can expect negative weights, (3) should one obtain a negative estimated grade, one can resort to elimination of negative weights using the technique outlined in the paper, and (4) one could normally select only the first layer of surrounding assays to estimate the block grade. Under such a perspective, most of the comments by Philip and Watson are irrelevant and misdirected. For example, the practitioners do not find it difficult to "interpret" the results of ordinary kriging, as evidenced by the fact that they have been using the results for nearly a decade. Nor are the practitioners concerned with discontinuities in estimated block grades due to changing neighborhood of assays during kriging. What matters to the practitioners is the fact that kriging does provide the best estimate among all the estimation tools available to them as of today. ?

During the past two decades, we have witnessed the computer revolution. Like other revolutions, it has been successful in many ways; however, it has not been without difficulties. One of the areas where these difficulties have been more prevalent has been in the application of computers for the purpose of controlling industrial processes. During the early 1960's, many people naively assumed that bridging the gap between data processing and process control was a simple matter of connecting a few wires, doing a little programming, laying off most of the people and watching the plant make great increases in production as the lights on the computer blinked on and off. Unfortunately, it has not been that simple. Instead, a whole new-set of disciplines has been required to overcome the major obstacles that exist. Nevertheless, current successes are proving that the digital process control computer is here to stay, and that through the application of digital computers an attractive return on investment can be obtained in many applications.. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate some of the requirements for successful implementation of computer control systems, with particular attention to the following four objectives: First: Acquaint the reader with the general control problems so that he may more fully recognize the major requirements for successful implementation. Second: To acquaint the reader with the types of control hardware that can be considered for use in the development of control systems. Third: To discuss some of the major obstacles that must be overcome for successful implementation of computer control systems. Fourth: To discuss the systems approach in the development of control systems and to illustrate it in the implementation of an actual control system.

As openpit mines continue to grow deeper and productivity continues to increase, the management of respirable dust and noxious gases can become a challenge. The natural wind flow in openpit mines is often recirculatory. This recirculation traps dust and gases in deep openpit mines. This problem is particularly acute in high-latitude openpit mines, due to a phenomenon known as atmospheric inversion. In the winter, arctic and subarctic regions experience short days and long nights. This deficit of solar radiation creates a situation in which cold, still air accumulates near the bottom of the pit. In openpit mines, this can result in unhealthy accumulations of gases and other contaminants. In this study, the natural wind flow patterns in and around openpit mines were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CfD) program. Two-dimensional models were created for a variety of pit geometries. The effect of depth, slope angle and wind speed on the recirculation pattern in the pit was examined.
