Ground control failures are one of the main causes of accidents in the underground stone mining industry. Some of the fundamental tools for rockfall hazard identification are related to rock mass characterization and geotechnical discontinuity mapping. Recent technological advances in these methods are related to remote sensing techniques and point cloud processing software for automated discontinuity mapping. Remote sensing techniques, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, generate multimillion point clouds with millimetric precision, capturing the structure of the rock mass. The automated point cloud processing tools offer alternative algorithm-based methods to characterize and map these discontinuities. However, their applicability is constrained by multiple factors such as site specific conditions of the rock mass and the parameters used within the mapping algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of automated discontinuity extraction software compared with manual virtual discontinuity mapping. Sampling windows from laser-scanned sections in an underground limestone mine are defined and mapped using discontinuity set extractor (DSE). Results from the virtual discontinuity software are compared with manually extracted fractures from I-Site based on reviewing orientation, trace length, spacing, number of extracted discontinuities, and processing time. The analysis determined that the automated mapping algorithm was able to identify the same discontinuity sets that had been manually mapped. The automated mapping software mapped an excessive amount of smaller fractures, which caused the comparison of both mapping techniques to be unsuccessful in terms of trace length and spacing.

The Deserado Mine of Western Fuels- Utah Inc. installed a micro-computer based mine wide monitoring and control system for mine environment, beltway fire protection, belt operating parameters, and equipment power utilization. The Colorado School of Mines was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to document, evaluate, and report on the system design, procurement, installation, tests, and operation. This paper results from that project. The paper compares planned activities such as installation and start up, procurement contract specifications and system layout with actual performance to develop recommendations for future installations by mine operators.

Frequently ore reserve studies utilize samples from a series of drilling or other types of sampling campaigns. Sometimes there is a mix of sample types, say for instance, channel samples from underground workings and drill core from surface drilling. Since drilling, sampling, logging, and sample preparation protocols tend to change over time, there is always a question whether the samples give similar results that vary only by chance alone. The problem of comparing the various campaigns is complicated by the presence of spatial relationships among the samples. Geostatistical tests take the spatial correlation into account, but these tests may be complicated and cumbersome to implement. A comparison method based on familiar statistical graphics is presented which accounts for the spatial relationships. It allows comparisons to be made quickly by using simple statistical graphs such as scatterplots and boxplots.

The iron mine and beneficiation facilities of Marcona Mining Company are located on the coast of south central Peru. The facilities include an open pit mine, crushing, concentrator containing grinding, magnetic-separation and flotation facilities, pelletizing plants and a completely self sufficient infrastructure. Total production capability is about 10,000,000 DLTPY, of which almost 6,000,000 DLT result from the fine-grind magnetic concentrate. Over 1,500,000 DLT of fine-grind concentrate is obtained from processing high-pyrrhotite ore. Although the orebody contains quantities of oxidized primary ore and transitional ores (mixed magnetite and hematite), the principal ore is predominantly a coarsely crystalline to fine grained massive magnetite.(l-3) In the primary ore the major impurities found are silicates and the iron sulfides- pyrite and pyrrhotite. Sulfur levels typically average about three percent although levels of five percent are not unusual and some ores contain up to ten percent total sulfides. In general the silicates and pyrite are readily rejected from finely ground primary ore by magnetic separation and very basic froth flotation processes. The high iron, low sulfur concentrate produced is particularly suitable for production of high quality oxide pellets. However, pyrrhotite is not removed from the magnetite matrix by either of' these simple beneficiation methods.

The aim of this study is to synthesize hydrated compounds of calcium silicate (tobermorite) using as siliceous source perlite milling process wastes, containing more than 70% of SiO2. Calcium silicate hydrates are mainly used for construction of lightweight building materials, plasters, tiles and filters. The effect of temperature, time and particle size of perlite on the quality and composition of the solid product was studied. The solid products were characterized by X-ray Diffractometry, Differential Thermal Analysis and the amount of Acid Insoluble Residue. The synthesis of tobermorite was per-formed by the hydrothermal treatment of perlite waste with a saturated calcium hydroxide solution at a molar ratio CaO/SiO2 of 1, liquid to solid ratio 10 mL/g and 1% w.t. NaOH addition. Three experimental sets were performed. In the first series of experiments the synthesis temperature was kept constant at 205°C while the synthesis time varied from 0.5 h to 24 h. In the second experimental series the synthesis time was kept constant at 2 h while the temperature varied between 150°C and 245°C. In the third experimental set the temperature was 205°C and the reaction time was 2 hours and two perlite waste size fractions were used, a coarse (d50=18 µm) and a fine grained one (d50=8 µm). Reaction products consisted of semicrystalline calcium silicate hydrate (I) and crystalline Al-substituted tobermorite or a mixture of both. An isomorphic Si4+ ions substitution with Al3+ ions in the hydrated calcium silicate lattice was detected by thermal analysis. The experimental results show that good quality crystalline Al-tobermorite can be produced after 6 hours of autoclaving at 205°C or after 2 hours of hydro-thermal treatment at 225°C. Generally, the in-crease of synthesis temperature or time favors the crystallization of calcium silicate phases and enriches them in aluminum. The use of fine grain size perlite is more efficient for the hydrothermal synthesis of calcium silicate hydrates.

When construction sites are in a densely- populated area or near roads, railroad or river, restrictions upon the ways of handling and using explosives such as dynamite and large demolition equipment are being increasingly stringent, in consideration of environmental pollution such as noise, vibration, dust, flyrocks etc., and safety precaution. In view of this, the development of safe and pollution-free technology for demolishing rocks at mines and reinforced concrete structure at building sites is strongly required. To meet such requirements, the demolition by means of expantion of mineral substances has been considered long before. Recently with the demolition technique using non-explosive demolition agent developed by ONODA CEMENT CO., LTD., holes are drilled into substances to be demolished, such as rocks and concrete before-hand. Then, slurry of such agent mixed with an appropriate quantity of water is poured into the holes. It hardens and expands with the passage of time, and the expansive stress reaches more than 3m/m2 in 10 to 24 hours. This expansive stress causes the material to crack. In this article, descriptions of the non- explosive demolition agent, BRISTAR manufactured by ONODA CEMENT CO., LTD., TOKYO, JAPAN, are given briefly with regard to its physical and chemical properties and its method of use; and the way it is used at an actual construction site is reported.

This paper reviews the postwar changes that have occurred in the expenditure and financial behavior of mineral corporations, and in particular the relative importance of factors that affect the industry's supply and demand for funds. This quantitative statistical investigation of factors affecting sources and uses of funds of mineral corporations is achieved through the formulation of a simultaneous equation model of sources and uses of funds. After a description of the study sample in Section I, the postwar cyclical and secular financial behavior of mineral corporations is analyzed in detail in Section II. Section III formulates an econometric model of mineral corporate financial behavior which is then estimated and reviewed in Section IV. Section V discusses policy issues regarding depletion allowances, investment tax credits, and industrial organization of the mineral sector. Finally, the optimum financial structure of mining firms is discussed in Section VI, which analyzes the effect of corporate financial structure on the mining corporations' average Cost of capital.

"Underground structures such as square/arch steel sets, king beam structure, etc. are widely used for the roof support in underground mines. In designing and calculating the required carrying capacities of these underground structures, how to identify the potential rock loads on the structures over long term is a challenging question for ground control engineers. Based on design practices of both surface and underground structures, the authors have designed and applied appropriate load factors in underground structural design projects to accommodate different rock types, entry/intersection dimensions, roof geologic conditions, availability of roof bolts and water, etc. Classification of load (reduction) factors for large-span underground intersections are presented for reference. Success of designed underground structures in effectively controlling roof stability over years indicates the applicability of the load factor concept for underground structural design, and its same significance as of the load factor specifications in ASCE/SEI 7-10, ANSI/AWC NDS (2015), and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (2012). The load factor concept will facilitate ground control engineers to appropriately utilize popular structural design software, such as RISA-3D or -2D to efficiently design and analyze underground structures.LOAD FACTORS IN STRUCTURE DESIGN APPLICATIONSIn structures, loads cause stresses, deformations, and displacements. Assessment of their effects is carried out by the methods of structural analysis with the help of load factors. Loads can be increased or decreased by load factors to meet the requirement that design strength be higher than maximum loads. For example, in designing a staircase, a dead load factor may be 1.2 times the weight of the structure, and a live load factor may be 1.6 times the maximum expected live load based on the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method. Coal-fired power plants in the U. S. produce approximately 20 million metric tons of Hue-gas desulfurization sludge every year. The sludge mainly consists of calcium sulfite and calcium sulfate. This can be converted to synthetic gypsum, which in principle could be a marketable commodity. However, many Hue-gas scrubbers produce sludges that do not meet the quality requirements of the gypsum industry, and so their sludges must be landfilled as a waste. If a suitable method can be developed for removing certain objectionable impurities from the sludge, it will then be possible to market the material instead of landfilling it. A sludge from a natural-oxidation scrubber was characterized, and the main contaminant was found to be calcium carbonate from unreacted limestone. Based on the particle size and the characteristics of the material, froth flotation was considered as a method for purifying the material. Since no flotation studies have ever been carried out to separate calcium carbonate particles from calcium sulfite or calcium sulfate particles, it was first necessary to select a suitable collecting reagent. Based on Zeta-potential studies, the most suitable reagent was found to be an octadecylamine-octadecylguanidine complex. Results are presented for flotation of calcium carbonate from scrubber sludge using this reagent, in a reverse-flotation process. The best results were obtained when the sludge was first pre-cleaned using a water-only cyclone to remove unfloatable coarse limestone, followed by froth flotation to remove fine limestone.

"Minnesota has robust reclamation standards and have proven results in the taconite mining industry. Reclamation of overburden spoils, lean ore spoils and fine tailings from taconite production has generally been successful on the Iron Range, using a low input standard reclamation practice. Success at reestablishing vegetation on these landscapes is likely due to fairly favorable chemical and physical properties (e.g., few limitations due to acidic generating materials, metal toxicities and water and nutrient holding capacities). However, coarse tailings reclamation has proven more difficult, presumably due to lower nutrients and challenges with moisture holding capacities. Research efforts conducted since 1990 have struggled to develop a reclamation strategy for coarse tailings that meets the Minnesota Mineland Reclamation Rules, Chapter 6130. However, new breakthroughs in scram mining technologies are producing fine and coarse tailings that have not been encountered nor reclaimed in northern Minnesota. Scram mining in Minnesota is defined as those mining operations that produce natural iron ore concentrates. Innovative research is underway to investigate and determine successful reclamation strategies to reclaim scram mining tailings from these scram mining operations. The research program is conducted through collaboration with SEH, Prairie Restorations, Inc. (PRI) and Mining Resources, LLC with funding support from the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Laurentian Vision Partnership minescapes grant program.The research program was divided into three phases:Phase I. Bench-scale testing to identify successful treatments to reclaim and restore scram tailings through evaluating surface soils amendments, viable seed mixes and plant germination, growth and densities. Phase I was completed in early 2015.Phase II. Field-scale pilot trial to test larger scale effectiveness of the treatments deemed successful in Phase I and test various vegetative assemblages and planting techniques focused on the unique challenges with scram tailing basins. Phase II was completed in late 2016 with a summary monitoring report.Phase III. Produce a technical report of results for the research undertaken in this study, as well as compile prior reclamation results used during previous Minnesota iron mining reclamation projects on tailings basin applications. Phase III was completed in 2017 with a summary monitoring report and recommendations."

The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. "It is generally known that spontaneous combustion potential is a function of coal rank, with low-rank coals having high susceptibility to self-ignition and high-rank coals having low potential. To establish this functional relationship and use it as an engineering tool to identify the propensity of coal to self-heat, both rank and spontaneous combustion potential should be quantified. ASTM D388 is normally used to classify coals by rank, but this classification system can only serve a qualitative analysis. To classify coals by their potential for spontaneous combustion, the self-heating temperature (SHT) method originally developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) was used by Litton and Page (1994) to correlate coal rank with spontaneous combustion potential. In that method, the SHTs of coal determined by an adiabatic experiment are linked with proximate analysis results through a proposed concept known as the “moist fuel ratio.” This ratio is a function of moisture, volatile matter and fixed carbon, all of which have widely different content percentages in different ranks of coal and have strong relationships with coal rank. However, the method is highly empirical, and there is large standard deviation between experimental data and calculated results. The equation correlating the coal quality parameters to determine SHT should be improved with more experimental data.This paper reports on the development of a new system for predicting the spontaneous combustion potential of U.S. coals, based on coal composition data from the U.S. Geological Survey’s coal quality database. First, the user is provided with a quantified classification of coal rank. Second, based on experimental SHT data covering a wide range of ranks from lignite to low-volatile bituminous coal, the original USBM correlation for predicting SHT is improved for the respective rank of coal. The relationship between the rank and SHT of U.S. coals was developed and plotted. The plot diagram can be used for a quick estimate of the SHT of a U.S. coal and as a cost-effective tool for the initial risk assessment of a new mine development."

At the present time, the Florida phosphate industry is experiencing one of the worst marked slumps in its one hundred year history. Recent agriculture over-production has caused low grain prices such that the net income of U.S. farmers is expected to drop to its lowest level since the 1932 depression. The farmers' low income, along with high interest rates that preclude them from borrowing to purchase fertilizer, make the immediate U.S. phosphate market outlook bleek at best. The export outlook is also pessimistic due to world recession and the U.S. dollar's high exchange rate. In June, 26% of the phosphate industry's workers were laid off for an indefinite period of time. Despite the immediate painful slump, the long-term outlook for the industry looks good. Florida has enormous reserves and will continue to produce a third of the world's phosphate supply simply by making changes in the present system of mining, beneficiation, waste disposal and land reclamation.

Since early 1973, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has been actively engaged in the utilization of coal mine refuse in the design and construction of highway embankments. The Soils and Geological Engineering Division of the Bureau of Materials, Testing and Research has the task of managing the program which includes field investigations, laboratory testing, engineering evaluation, planning, coordination, implementation, construction control, and review of construction performance. The objectives of the utilization program, in removing colliery refuse banks and utilizing the material in construction, are the environmental and aesthetic rehabilitation of those areas in the Anthracite and Bituminous coal fields which have been plagued for such a long time by air and water pollution, and unsightly landscapes; and the economic rehabilitation of those areas occupied by refuse banks by providing usable land which can now be developed as residential, business, or industrial sites.

Most of the reported coal spontaneous combustion events occur in surface and underground mines where low rank coals (i.e., subbituminous and lower for this particular studies) are extracted indicating their high propensities for spontaneous combustion. Low rank coals have high moisture content (15 to 45%) and are capable of absorbing more moisture in dried condition. However, it is hard to induce the initial stage of self-heating process for the low rank coal using the current laboratory R70 testing method — a method widely used in the coal industry. Like a sponge, dry low rank coals can absorb water vapor in the air while the heat contained in the moist air is transferred to coal and served as the required activation energy to initiate the coal self-heating process. In order to prove this theorem and quantify the effects, the R70 adiabatic oxidation testing method has been improved to introduce a controlled moist flow into the coal reaction vessel. Tests using the new method and its setup on low rank coals showed that the initial self-heating process of coal sample can be greatly accelerated by the added water vapor — impossible with the regular R70 method. Once the self-heating is sustained, the removal of air moisture can further accelerate the process.

The limited lifespan, ever-growing demand, and significant lithium and cobalt content are responsible factors for the immediate recycling of discarded lithium-ion batteries. Discharged batteries were dismantled, segregated, and size reduced to recover cathode and anode material. The active cathode material comprises LiCoO2 (65.8%) and LiMn2O4 (34.2%) and was carbothermal reduced with recovered graphite in a microwave furnace followed by water leaching and magnetic separation. A Box Behnken statistical experimental design is used for process optimization. Both cobalt and manganese report to magnetic fraction, whereas graphite and lithium carbonate report to non-magnetic fraction and solution crystal respectively. The final product comprises of cobalt 73% and manganese of 14% with process yield of 36% and saturation magnetization of 76 emu/g.

The Buick Concentrator represents state-of- the-art technology in automated digital process control operation utilizing a centralized computer. The process control strategies implemented at Buick are no longer new to the industry but the successful application of these developments is still rather unique in North America. Productivity improvements, determined to be a direct result of the process control developments, are the primary topics of this paper. Emphasis is placed on metallurgical benefits including both lead and zinc recoveries, lead concentrate grade and reductions realized in reagent consumptions, operating costs and personnel. The productivity improvement discussion is preceded by a concentrator description and a brief history of the process control development at Buick. Current control strategies and future applications are presented afterward.

Mine Development Associates, Inc. was formed in March of 1987 to provide mine engineering assistance to the mineral industry. To be competitive with other firms, Mine Development must be able to provide quick and accurate ore reserves and mine plans for clients. Commercially available mining software was necessary for Mine Development to assist the client. This paper describes how Mine Development chose mining software, the time involved in getting up to speed, and several case histories of how the software is used. The case histories discussed include: * 3,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 5,000,000 ton gold deposit in South Dakota. * 1,000,000 ton gold deposit in Australia. * +100,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 25,000,000 ton carbonate deposit in California.
