INTRODUCTION The increasing concern for the environment may well present far more opportunities than problems for those involved in all phases of tunneling. All too frequently in the past, environmentalists and their concerns have been cast in a negative light, as obstacles to be overcome. Often forgotten is the fact that these same environmental concerns have created a rapidly increasing demand for new tunnels. Tunnels for rapid transit projects, clean water supply, and sewage treatment have been given a boost because of environmentalists' concerns about overuse of automobiles, inadequate water supplies, and improper sewage disposal. Concurrent with increasing use of tunnels to help solve or alleviate some of our environmental problems is an obligation not to create new ones in the process. Concerns which we feel responsible tunnel owners, engineers, and contractors should address themselves to include: (1) Minimum energy consumption, both during construction and in operation of the completed project; (2) proper storage and/or disposal of the excavated material; (3) minimum disruption during the construction process - noise, traffic, unnecessarily unsightly work areas, and possible weakening of foundations of nearby structures; and (4) a finished project consistent with community and environmental goals. We are especially concerned about two things. First, the longrun implications of a project -- what's good for a few people in the short-run may be bad for most of the people in the long-run. The present study examines the use of two vs. one stage of hydrocyclones in a pilot scale ball mill circuit. The approach used for doing this is based on computer simulation with mathematical models that explicitly account for the grinding mill/classification system interaction. Parameters for the ball mill model are obtained using a short-lived radioactive tracer method in open circuit tests of the study mill. The hydrocyclone model, based on the size selectivity concept, is developed and validated in standalone testing of the study hydrocyclones. Simulation procedures are validated through actual tests of the closed circuit grinding configurations of interest. Results of the evaluation indicate that two stages of hydrocyclones in the study circuit would improve classification, increase productivity and lead to more closely sized circuit products when compared to the conventional one stage hydrocyclone circuit. A computer simulation approach for comparing these circuit configurations in larger scale grinding circuits is also suggested.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is staffed with Engineers, Geologists, and Field Technicians conducting a variety of ground control research. The mission of the ground control teams within the Mine Systems Safety Branch (MSSB) is to eliminate ground failures leading to mineworker injuries and fatalities. Advancing the science behind ground control relies heavily on conducting mutually beneficial research at participating mines which is detailed in specific references throughout the paper. The ground control teams have several types of field instruments at their disposal to measure the ground response in underground mines. These include borehole pressure cells (BPCs), vibrating wire stress meters (VWs), hollow inclusion cells (Hi-Cells), roof and rib extensometers, load cells, and convergence meters. These instruments are used to measure changes in pressure, strain, and displacement within the underground environment. Instrumentation data is collected automatically using intrinsically safe or MSHA permissible dataloggers if required. Information is transmitted to the dataloggers using approved cable to distances of 200–1,000 ft. depending on the type of datalogger being used. Once mining is completed, the dataloggers are retrieved and brought to the surface, providing in-mine data to mine management and engineers for the conditions currently being encountered in a particular mine. This data, in conjunction with geologic data and stress mapping, can be used to validate numerical models. The practical application of these models is extremely important for mine management and engineers, particularly when faced with more challenging mine environments. Insight gained from applying these models can be used to make better engineering-based judgments for areas that will be mined in the future. The impact of such applications can result in a reduction of ground-fall accidents and injuries as well as generally safer working conditions.

In recent times, with rare exceptions, most economically viable ore discoveries have been large, low-grade and located in remote parts of the world. Mining companies have often shown to be incapable of mitigating their social and economic impact on local communities. Sustainable development and relations can be achieved by implementing bottom-up methodologies to the top-down tools already in use by mining companies. In order to magnify the importance of enterprise facilitation as a primary method for community development, data from 25 years of community based work around the world was used. Results highlight the need for a grassroots approach to local economic and community development, which focuses on the creation of a parallel economy in communities. Using solely top-down methodologies for developing community relations is shown to be a limited resource for mining companies. There are fundamentally two dangers for mining companies: alienating the local population, resulting in militancy and lengthy legal battles to obtain a license to operate; and, being accountable for building social and economic infrastructure that are not the company?s responsibility.

The U.S. Department of Energy is charged, by federal law, with the responsibility for developing and implementing programs for long- term storage and terminal disposal of high- level radioactive wastes from both commercial and defense nuclear operations. Approximately 288,000 cubic meters of defense high-level wastes are currently in storage at the government's Hanford Reservation in the State of Washington, the Savannah River Plant in South Carolina, and the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant in Idaho (U.S. Department of Energy, 1980a). High-level wastes from commercial nuclear power production are stored in water pools or basins at various power plant sites. At the end of 1980, approximately 7.460 metric tons of uranium, contained within 28,300 fuel assemblies was in storage at various reactor basins. Although the present inventory of defense wastes are many times larger in volume and in total level of radioactivity than the commercial wastes, in the future, the latter will constitute a substantial quantity of wastes that will have to be disposed of. The present electric generating capactiy of nuclear power plants in the United States is 56.5 Gigawatts-electric (GWe). The amount of spent fuel that would be discharged and accumulated by the year 2000 from these operating reactors would be 38,000 metric tons. With a projected growth of the nuclear industry to 180 GWe in the year 2000, the amount of spent fuel accumulated at the turn of the century could reach 89,000 metric tons of uranium or approximately 318,000 assemblies. In any case, whether one postulates a no growth pattern or one where nuclear power provides its share in the country's electric generating capacity in the next two decades, a means for safe and environmentally accept- able disposal of high-level nuclear wastes must be found. Storage of commercial wastes in water basins, either at reactor (AR) sites or at away from reactor (AFR) sites, and storage of reprocessed defense wastes in surface or near surface tanks is a temporary solution and is not an alternative for permanent disposal.

To the casual observer there is probably no simpler appearing operation in the mineral industry than a limestone quarry. It might seem that the entire operation - from the drilling, blasting, and loading of the stone, its transport to a mill for crushing, washing and sizing, to loading into boats, railroad cars, or trucks for delivery to customers - can be comprehended at a glance. But no first impression could be more misleading. It is one of the purposes of this presentation to sketch the broad outlines of the extensive limestone industry in the United States which, measured in terms of volume of production since the end of World War II, has grown almost 300 per cent to a national level in 1957 of 384 million net tons.1 Another objective will be to discuss in more detail this industry in the State of Michigan. For this latter purpose, the Michigan Limestone Division plants at Calcite and at Cedarville will be used as examples. These descriptions will, we believe, show that the limestone business has complexities to match its size.

In room and pillar mining a large number of working points are arranged to follow a mining pattern. Geological and roof control problems can be overcome or their effect minimized by varying this pattern. Longwall mining on the other hand, fixes the mining pattern for anyone panel. This aspect of longwall mining leads to constancy, so that a well-conceived organization, ventilation, dust and roof control systems lead to daily repetition and subsequent simplicity of control. All the same, a fixed mining pattern calls for a very careful consideration and selection of design parameters. (Ref. 1.)

Methane has been a hazard since the beginning of coal mining and has influenced, more or less, every aspect of coal mine design. It is receiving increased attention lately because the rate of methane emission in coal mines is increasing as increasing demand for coal leads to exploitation of deeper seams and the use of higher productivity equipment. Consequently, the government and private industries have directed a great deal of effort towards understanding and solving the problem of methane emission in coal mines. In the United States, Consolidation Coal Company has pioneered research in this area since the early 1950's.1 Currently this work is being expanded by Consol through the Mining Research Division of the parent company, Continental Oil (Conoca), to find new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas. Basic reservoir properties of coal seams, such as gas content, reservoir pres-sure, diffusivity, porosity and permeability are better understood today largely through the efforts of the U. S. Bureau of Minese2,3,4 It is possible now to identify and model the basic mechanism of gas emission from coal and to forecast steady as well as unsteady state emission of methane in coal mines with some degree of reliability. Combining this knowledge with any ventilation simulator should often identify problem areas in advance and permit adequate methane control measures to be planned.5 Another recent innovation in methane control is the horizontal hole drilling technology. The U. S. Bureau of 1-1ines and the Mining Research Division of Conoco have independently developed techniques for drilling horizontal holes 300 to 600 m deep6 The Bureau's method employs a rotary drill string while Conoco uses a non-rotating string with a down hole drill motor. It is the authors' view that the latter provides more positive control on bore hole deviation both vertically and laterally and appears to be faster, though somewhat more difficult to operate. The Lone Tree gold mine is located about 4S kilometers east from Winnemucca on the west flank of Lone Tree Hill in Humboldt County, Nevada. The deposit occurs at the north end of the low, rolling Havallah Hills and is about 1 kilometer south of Interstate Highway 80, in sections 11 and 14, Township 34 North, Range 42 East, Mount Diablo Base and Meridian (Fig. 1). The Lone Tree deposit is outside of any previously established mining district and all lands are owned or controlled by Santa Fe Pacific Gold or affiliated companies.

In the current operational facility, due to the absence of pellet pot facility, a novel technique is developed wherein the pellets with different chemistries prepared in the laboratory are fired in an induration machine by placing them inside the Inconel baskets. In the present work, an attempt is made to optimize the pellet chemistry by developing 2 different flux pellets, viz., low basicity (B2: CaO/ SiO2 = 0.3) pellets and high basicity (B2 = 0.9) pellets, and further the effects of basicity on pellet properties, viz., cold compressive strength, porosity, swelling index, reducibility index, and softening and melting temperature, are studied. It has been found through the multiple operational trials that increasing the basicity of pellets from 0.3 to 0.9 results into improving the pellet strength, reducibility and softening and melting characteristics. Moreover, it is observed that the swelling index of pellets is reduced by adding 2% MgO to both low and high basicity pellets that could be attributed to the formation of high melting point slag in pellets. The operational trial has resulted into producing pellets that exhibit a combination of desired mechanical strength, improved swelling, and reducibility index and possess better softening–melting behavior among all the chemistries studied.

Installation of a Load Commutated Inverter (LCI) provides an economical method for conversion of a Fixed Speed Semi-Autogenous Grinding Mill into one with variable speed, qualities. Though capital intensive, the conversion appears to be one of the most cost-effective methods to gain the advantage of critical speed variations for variable ore characteristics. Expected advantages from the installation of LCI drives at the Goldstrike Mine were decreased liner wear, decreased media consumption and additional grind for increased production rates. These issues as well as construction, economics and performance will be discussed in the presentation. The utilization of the existing equipment came to play an integral part of the study and economic justification of the overall project.

Spirals have become one of the most popular methods for treating fine coal. Unfortunately, spirals tend to produce an undesirably high specific gravity cut-point and often misplace significant amounts of coal and/or rock. In the present study, a process-engineering tool known as linear circuit analysis was used to identify problems with traditional spiral circuits and to suggest alternative configurations. These analyses indicate that a modified rougher-cleaner circuit incorporating a middlings recycle stream offers the best option for improving performance while maintaining a reasonable circulating load. In light of this finding, a full-scale test circuit was installed and evaluated at an existing preparation plant. Data obtained from the plant tests indicate that the new spiral circuit can simultaneously reduce cut-point and improve separation efficiency. Preliminary economic analyses show that the new circuit provides an attractive payback on the capital investment.

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

Automation technology has many facets, some well tested and proven, some yet to be put to the acid test of economic reality. In this paper, we will limit our purview to the former. Consider, if you will, an automated handling system combining high-speed conveyors and automatic devices on-line which not only provide signals for routing and sorting, but also format those signals for the production of manufacturing, inventory, shipping and billing paperwork. This is not futuristic, but practical and a realistic accomplishment. Therefore, the following discussions will address today's challenges not with tomorrow's solutions, but rather, with an established technology which is playing an increasingly prominent role in materials handling systems. Until recently, relatively modest importance has been attached to the timeliness of information feedback from the production or assembly line, warehouse or distribution center. Thus, initial applications of automatic identification equipment focused almost exclusively upon the control of materials flow - that is, routing, sorting, etc. However, these systems have performed successfully and quietly established an enviable track record as reliable materials control tools.

Traditionally, chromite ores are regarded exclusively as a monomineral raw material for extraction of chromium. The results of the investigations indicate a wide range of PGM in the Ray-Iz chromites, amounting to 1-3 ppm PGM. The study of products of primary gravity concentration from heavily and lightly disseminated ores (Tsentralnoe deposit, Ray-Iz block), showed that the platinum-group minerals are concentrated in the tails and slimes of the processed products, containing 10-30 ppm total PGM. Preliminary data make it possible to conclude that an in-depth study of the platinum mineralogy of the Ray-Iz block chromite ores is necessary to develop a process that will produce both chromium and the PGM.

Pilot plant operations are described for the treatment of manganiferous zinc concentrates from the Gamsberg ore deposit in South Africa via conventional electrolytic zinc processing. Two methods were employed for the control of excess manganese ions in the pilot plant electrolyte involving (1) chemical oxidation and (2) anodic oxidation. The chemical oxidation method for manganese control was very successful. It also was found that the addition of manganese dioxide ore was not required for oxidation of ferrous iron during the neutral leach or jarosite precipitation steps. A new method (JAR process) for iron removal also was tested in the pilot plant.

Many Third World countries of Third World Africa are well-endowed with minerals, especially gold. Political and economic conditions discouraged interest by Western capital for the several decades since colonial rule. Influence from Eastern Block countries has gone and the left wing orientation widely favored by Third World countries has almost disappeared. Under International Monetary Fund influence, these countries now solicit Western finance to expand their industries. Mining is especially encouraged. The paper describes the financing of some recent developments and examines trends and opportunities in some of the more attractive countries.

"BACKGROUND Strata mechanics of three underground coal mines in central Utah were recently studied using a specialized finite element technique [1, 2, 3, 4]. The purpose of these studies was to examine relationships between mining and related seismicity. The longwall mining method was predominant, but room and pillar mining and barrier pillar mining were also used in the mines studied. In every case, high correlation between face advance and seismicity was observed. The specialized finite element technique allows for whole mine subsidence estimation at a kilometer scale and for stress concentration at a meter scale near a working face. Comparisons of observed mine subsidence with model subsidence allows for model verification and justifies detailed analysis of the evolution of stress at seam level. Yielding is expected near a longwall panel face and as the face is advanced the extent of yielding is expected to increase. The total number of element failures in a finite element mine model also increases, so a high correlation with associated seismicity, say, event count, is not so surprising. A brief review of recent coal mine studies in Utah is presented in the sequel. The procedures are given in some detail in application to trona mining. COAL MINES The analysis procedure begins with the geologic column and proceeds to specification of strata properties including elastic moduli and strengths. Joints are an integral part of the geologic model and joint set specifications include dip direction, dip, spacing, stiffness and strength. Spatial variability of strata properties in situ may be taken into account during analysis. Topography is important, especially to Utah coal mines that are developed from outcrop in regions of high relief. Mesh generation follows specification of data input. Finite element analysis is next, followed by reporting of results. In this regard, all finite element computations are based on first principles. No model “calibration” is done that involves adjusting computer input to obtain a fit to mine measurements such as subsidence profiles. Figure 1 illustrates the concept of a dual node – dual mesh finite element concept. Dual nodes are roof and floor nodes in mined areas. These nodes replace the seam. The dual mesh is a much refined mesh with displacement boundary conditions obtained from the big mesh and thus replaces the effect of mining in the region outside the dual mesh. The refined dual mesh allows for details of stress, strain and displacement near a working face of interest. Strata Properties Strata properties include elastic moduli and strengths of intact rock between joints and joint stiffness and strength for each joint set present. Both properties sets may be obtained from laboratory test data, although testing joints poses a sampling problem in the field. The statistical variability observed in laboratory test data, say, in unconfined compressive strength tests is often characterized by much variation. In fact, the coefficient of variation, ratio of standard deviation to mean, is often greater than 35 percent. When sample values are mapped back to the mine location, one may observe spatial variability as properties vary from place to place as shown in Figure 2. Spatial variability may be incorporated into a finite element analysis with probabilistic assignment of properties to elements in accordance with measured variability. The result is a more realistic model of rock in situ."

In today's world coal market, coal quality is becoming increasingly important. Often the coal quality parameters are one of the crucial considerations in the development of a coal mine. Because of the user's tighter specifications and because of strict environmental regulations, coal producers are being called on to predict with increasing accuracy, not only the quality of their product but also the variability of that quality. This area of reserve evaluation is naturally receiving a great deal of scrutiny. Consolidation Coal Company has developed reliable and sophisticated methods for predicting coal quality, but the company's efforts continue to search for even better techniques. The following is a step-wise summary of The methods currently used by consolidation coal company, with A recent project used as an example. Two of the newer, and as yet experimental techniques will be briefly discussed.

Slurry reactors are being used extensively throughout the chemical, biochemical and mineral processing industries. This paper describes the interaction between fine ore particles and granular porous adsorbents such as activated carbon and ion-exchange resins in a stirred tank reactor. Gold and silver cyanides were used as adsorbates to detect changes in the mass transfer characteristics of the adsorbents, which were ashed to determine the loading of ore particles. A simple kinetic model incorporating film diffusion, intrapanicle diffusion ~d the adsorption equilibrium, was used to interpret kinetic data and to estimate the effect of slurry conditions on the diffusion parameters. It was observed that the equilibrium loading of fines in the adsorbents was independent of their concentration in the slurry. Furthermore, the presence of these panicles inside an adsorbent decreases the effective diffusion of gold or silver cyanides into the adsorbent matrix. When fine suspended solids are present in the reactor, a decrease in the effective availability of the superficial surface of the pre-saturated adsorbent panicles for mass transfer from the liquid phase was observed. This newly defined surface availability factor was dependent on the concentration, panicle size, and the zeta potential of the fine particles in suspension.
