Blasor is a new mine planning tool which is being used in the long and medium-term optimization of multi-open-pit operations throughout BHP Billiton’s Base Metals and bulk commodities portfolio. It is not just a scheduler, nor even only a schedule optimizer—although this function lies at the heart of the tool’s functionality—but a pit development plan optimizer, used from ultimate pit design and process plant capacity sizing right through to mining phase design and optimal panel scheduling. The tool uses a mixed-integer-linear-programming optimization engine to determine when material should be excavated and where it should be sent to optimize discounted operating cash flow over the life of operation. The core software design concept of Blasor is to provide a tool which is intuitive and flexible enough so that a competent mine planner can perform a pit development plan optimization without assistance from optimization specialists. To this end, a generalized graphical user interface has been implemented which allows full configuration of the optimization problem, including the definition of all inputs and constraints, specification of the material flow topology, bin and destination class definitions and full specification of the economic model encompassing prices and costs. This paper describes the capability of Blasor and outlines the design concepts underlying its design philosophy.

Traditionally within the mining industry, the main functional process flow for resource and reserve evaluation proceeds from geologists who build the geological model, to resource estimation geologists (modelers) who estimate the grades, to mining engineers who develop the mine design and schedule. The interface between these three disciplines is not always seamless. Assumptions made during one stage of the process are not always communicated down the line, even though most mining companies have procedures in place to encourage communication across the various disciplines. These procedures do not always achieve their aim due to a variety of reasons including time constraints, appropriate people not being available, or a lack of understanding of what other disciplines require, and the handover process can degenerate into one of sending computer files on to the next discipline in the process flow. This paper focuses on the interface between the resource estimation and mine engineering disciplines, and outlines some of the common assumptions made when generating a resource model and the risks that engineers may be taking when elevating cutoff grades, optimizing schedules or generating forecasts. The case studies presented focus on openpit gold deposits, but the concepts should be applicable throughout the industry. A summary of key questions and recommendations is provided.

The Devil?s Slide portion of Highway 1 between Pacifica and Montara is often closed due to the instability of the adjacent slopes. Following many years of public input and careful evaluation of alternatives, Devil?s Slide will be by-passed via two inland tunnels, providing a safe, dependable highway between Pacifica and Montara. For the twin tunnels, each 9m diameter tube will accommodate only one traffic lane. Each tunnel tube will accommodate a 3.6 meter roadway, 0.6 meter and 2.4 meter inside and outside shoulders respectively, and 1.2 meter walkways on each side. Cross passages will connect the bores at about 120 meter intervals and jet fans will provide tunnel ventilation. The twin tunnels are approximately 1,250 meter long and 9 meter wide. Excavation will progress from south to north using tunneling techniques that rely on inherent rock strength for support known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Both tunnels will be excavated at the same time, one tunnel face approximately 40 meters ahead of the other. Staggering the tunnels reduces the likelihood of damage from blasting in alternate tunnels. The work schedule is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week resulting in a 24-month timetable to break through to the north portal.

Introduction In 1967, Tenneco acquired Kern County Land Co. The primary reason for the acquisition was to obtain Kern's agricultural, manufacturing, and oil interests. Included in the Kern portfolio were the core of Tenneco's present sodium leases in Sweetwater County, WY. This lease base has been ex¬panded and now consists of 62 km2 (24 sq miles). Beneath this property lies more than 500 Mt (550 million st) of economic trona ore. Following the Kern acquisition, Tenneco continued exploration and feasibility studies concerning the trona leases. The effort was accelerated in 1976. Tenneco was attracted to trona because of the favorable lease position it held, the growth rate of the Wyoming industry during the 1960s and 1970s, and the prospects for a long-term, stable business enterprise. The reserve picture was certainly attractive to a company long accustomed to the never-ending struggle to replace oil and gas reserves. In 1978, Wyoming was a boom area that had experienced rapid growth for a number of years. Unemployment was very low and vacant housing nonexistent. The prospects for soda ash were somewhat different in the 1970s than now. But it was recognized even then that a new producer would have a challenging task to compete in this business. Tenneco knew the capital burden required to build a grassroots facility during inflationary time, would have to be offset elsewhere Since labor and energy are the dominant direct costs in mining trona and producing soda ash these factors have always received a great deal of attention. Contracting and permits Environmental monitoring on the site began in late 1977. With the already mentioned considerations in mind, engineering began by mid-1978. Brown & Root Inc. was selected as the general contractor for the project. S. A. Scott & Co. was the engineering subcontractor for the mine shafts, hoists, ventilation system, and miscellaneous mine facilities. Frontier-Kemper was awarded the contract for sinking the two mine shafts. Acquisition of numerous federal, state, and local permits occupied all of 1978 and 1979. The Wyoming Industrial Siting Permit, which addresses socioeconomic issues, drew the most public interest. Siting issues were all satisfactorily resolved by negotiating reasonable stipulations with various local governmental units, school districts, and the like. Site location The Green River project location is not truly remote. It is located within 5 km (3 miles) of Interstate 80 and only about 32 km (20 miles) west of the city of Green River. Nevertheless, a substantial investment had to be made in communication and utility links to the site. These included: • A 14-km (8.5-mile) rail spur connecting with the Union Pacific Railroad at Bryan, WY. This spur has four bridge structures including one crossing Interstate 80. Most soda ash is shipped by rail, and coal is received over this line as well. • A paved 5-km (3-mile) roadway connecting to Interstate 80. • A powerline extension of about 27 km (16.5 miles), along with two new substations. • A 24-km (15-mile) waterline connecting the plant to a pump station on the Green River. The site is located on gently sloping terrain at an elevation of about 2.1 km (6800 ft). Ground conditions are good for construction. Weathered bedrock lies near the surface in most places. Geology The general geology of the Green River Basin has been well described previously. Tenneco's ore is in several superimposed evaporate beds. To solve the problem of time-consuming and low precision in updating the open-pit vehicle transportation network, a high precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3 + C (DeepLabv3 + Concat) is presented. Then, the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3 + C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the open-pit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicle meeting in open-pit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy was proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines. Besides, the DeepLabv3 + C network is verified by comparing the mIOU (means Intersection Over Union), accuracy, and continuity of road image extraction with the mainstream networks. The road network model constructed in the first step is quantitatively analyzed, and its performance is compared with GPS trajectory clustering methods. At the end of the paper, vehicle running simulation is carried out on the road network model by using Unity (a 3D visualization simulation software). The results show that the road network model constructed by this method can meet the navigation requirements of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines, and the feasibility of the vehicle meeting strategy is proved.

Discrete (digital) signal processing techniques are proving to be very valuable tools for miners using the block cave method. Waveform analysis of different measured signals associated with active mining provides valuable information on production dynamics and safe operation of the mine. For example, correlation of the 3D surface displacement velocity waveform and the production output waveform reveals a remarkably predictable time-varying physical process. Studying the geometrical and temporal relationship between these two signals opens a broad window through which new management techniques become apparent. In this paper we discuss the signal processing techniques used to study these relationships, as well as the related implications for mining. This research was carried out in association with the Chevron Mining underground molybdenum mine in Questa, New Mexico. Some of these new techniques will be integrated into the decision management process at the mine and will provide insight on ore production, draw control, and safe reclamation. The science of signal processing involves the analysis and interpretation of physical processes that vary with time. Two general categories of signals1 are recognized. A continuous signal is a waveform of varying amplitude that is continuous in time (such as a sine wave). A discrete signal is a sequence of quantized values. The independent time variable and amplitude are sampled periodically such that we only know the value and shape of the waveform at the sampling frequency. Displacements measured by a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver are an example of this. Discrete signals may be studied in the time, frequency, autocorrelation, or wavelet domains. In this paper the amount of ore extracted from the mine and the measured surface displacements are analyzed in the time domain.

The subject of rapid excavation tunneling is one that is extremely important to the people in the Metropolitan area of Chicago. My personal observation is that it is also extremely important to the urban communities around the U.S., to many local and state governments, and to the public officials who are deeply concerned about state affairs and taxes. The Metropolitan Chicago area is in fact, (as are 40 other major urban areas in the U.S.) confronted at the present time with a very serious combined sewer overflow, drainage and pollution problem which accounts for an estimated 40% of the pollutional load on its waterway system. In response to this the District has to date spent some seven millions of dollars in an attempt to find the most economical solution available for the elimination of this problem. This study included extensive investigations of the geological strata, the quantity and quality of storm runoff to be dealt with, and the various methods of storage and treatment available. It has considered solving the overflow problem by a concept involving a series of tunnels, rock tunnels, shafts and storage areas which will collect, retain and subsequently treat that portion of the combined sewer overflow which can be handled in the most cost-effective and economical way, consistent with following the federal and state standards - with which we at the present time agree in principle.

The Blair Athol Coal Mine (BAC) is a large open cut operation in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia. Current mine capacity is about 11 million tonnes per annum(Mtpa) of export coal. On-line analysis at BAC consists of two Coalscan 9500s installed directly on the output of the crusher plant and immediately before the product stockpiles, while a third Coalscan 9500 is installed on the transfer conveyor feeding the train loading bin. The two product Coalscans have a dual purpose. The first is to provide real time coal quality data directly back to the mining operations. The second is that of modeling the product stockpile with accurate on-line information. This modeling enables both production and coal quality personnel to accurately examine the coal quality of each stockpile with a degree of resolution which previously had never been achieved.

The La Fontaine Tunnel in Montreal, Quebec is currently undergoing major structural rehabilitation work and systems upgrade work to comply with current codes, standards and best practices in fire life safety and to extend its lifespan of this 55-year-old immersed tube tunnel for at least another 40 years. The paper discusses design consideration of ongoing works that include structural analyses to evaluate repair strategies for the post-tensioned reinforced caissons, the scheme to repair two leaky joints between caissons, the design of passive fire protection that involved in situ and real scale laboratory tests, and other tunnel systems upgrades.

Belt network simulators developed in the last two decades are reviewed. Critical parameters in belt network design are identified, and the capabilities of belt simulators in providing values of these parameters are investigated. An alternative design model that optimizes values of the critical parameters is introduced. To illustrate the capabilities of the alternative model, a real life case is treated and the outcomes are discussed.

The use of statistical design to optimize deinking process design has been studied for the flotation deinking of newspapers. The interactions of two variables are often important in determining flotation deinking efficiency. The interactions can be synergistic or antagonistic. These interactions would not be discovered using the traditional method of varying one parameter and holding the other variables constant. An experiment design in which two or more process parameters are varied simultaneously is required to identify these interactions. A considerable number of conclusions could be drawn about the relative importance of process variables on ink particle size distribution, ink removal efficiency, and flotation yield loss in a flotation deinking process. However, these findings could be influenced by the deinking surfactant and the ink chemistry.

Two of the largest industries in northern Michigan, pulp and paper manufacturing and iron mining, formed a mutually beneficial partnership and collaborative research program to utilize paper mill residuals for waste rock stockpile reclamation. Historically, the majority of the paper industry’s residuals have been disposed of in landfills. The beneficial use of paper mill residuals for mine reclamation provides an environmentally sound recycling solution for the solids generated at northern Michigan paper mills and eliminates the need to strip additional overburden (glacial till) for final mine reclamation. Residuals offer a cost-effective source of organics and nutrients necessary for successful reclamation and waste rock stockpiles offer an economical and environmentally sound solution for disposal of residuals. The goal is to successfully pioneer technical development of paper mill residuals to accomplish vegetation of steep waste rock stockpile slopes and benches to establish a self-sustaining plant community that meets final reclamation requirements. Of the various types of iron mining wastes, rock stockpiles pose the greatest reclamation challenge. Success depends on incorporating sufficient organic matter into the rock stockpiles to produce a growth medium that can sustain vegetation without the need of overburden. This is an ongoing research program that is evolutionary in nature with numerous field trials, greenhouse studies, data collection and monitoring over multiple growing seasons. The program is a combination of innovative ideas and accepted reclamation practices that is proving to be a beneficial and economic approach to paper mill residual management and mine reclamation that will eventually lead from research to standardized reclamation procedures.

As openpit copper operations transition from surface mines to underground, the speed of underground infrastructure construction prior to production is critical for maximizing the value of the project. Typically, the preferred underground bulk mining method is block caving. In preparation for future underground projects, Rio Tinto made the strategic decision to invest in a step-change program that would develop system solutions to reduce the construction time of block caves. The program focused on improving safety and doubling or more the construction speed of both vertical shafts and horizontal infrastructure compared to existing drill-and-blast rates. After an extensive selection process, Rio Tinto selected the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine as one of the concepts to proceed with for construction of horizontal infrastructure for access and footprint. In addition to un-derground drilling and hauling equipment, Atlas Copco?s Robbins mobile miner concept (a previous attempt at horizontal mechanical excavation) completed trials at Mount Isa, Pasminco and Taisei. Rio Tinto selected the new Atlas Copco mobile miner machine concept for a number of reasons including the use of proven technology from the three previous mobile miner machines and other commercial products, as well as the ability to install complete ground support typical with high rock stress conditions at approximately 1,500 to 2,000 m (4,900 to 6,500 ft) depth. Atlas Copco, with support from Rowa, the Swiss company that specializes in back up systems for tunnel boring machines (TBM), is advancing the detail design of the access version of a tunneling system on behalf of Rio Tinto. Because of the different requirements between an excavation system for access tunnels and that for tunnels on the footprint, two different versions of the mobile miner machine technology were envisioned. The access and the footprint versions of the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine share a majority of key technologies and systems. Therefore, it was possible to conduct a performance conformation test using a full-scale version of the access machine that would also mitigate the technical risks for the footprint version. Rate of penetration of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) has a significant role in the planning, measurement of productivity and performance of any tunneling project. In this paper, the application of Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) in prediction of TBM penetration rate is evaluated. For this purpose, a database including Rock Quality Designation (RQD), Uni-axial Compressive Strength (UCS) of the rock, the Distance between Planes of Weakness (DPW) in the rock mass, and empirical data regarding rate of penetration of TBM from several tunneling projects are collected. The Rate of Penetration is then estimated by using ANFIS. These results are then compared with measured TBM penetration rates (actual data). It is concluded that ANFIS can be applied successfully for such purpose and result in high accuracy for prediction for the rate of penetration of TBM. The method provided in this paper can assist the mining engineer to estimate the performance of tunneling accurately.

This paper returns to the basics of ring gear design beginning with the fundamental power formulas specified by AGMA. Specific emphasis is given to those elements in the rating equations which require closer attention as gear diameters and transmitted power increase. Strict process control in the manufacture of the gear blank is also stressed. Finally, the writer offers a guide to proper installation, lubrication and maintenance.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued study of the Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) developed by Rupprecht & Patashnick Co. Inc. through a CDC contract and currently being commercialized by Thermo Fisher Scientific. This report examines the effect of oversize particles, cyclone inversion, and cleaning procedures. Clean and exposed filters were examined using light microscopy and particulates counted before and after various instrument manipulations. The data presented show that the dry cleaning procedures do not cause significant (greater than limit of detection) sample contamination by respirable or oversize particulates and that the cyclone is resistant to particulate carry over during inversion.

Thank you Mr. Stevens. It's a pleasure for me to be speaking to this meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME this afternoon, and the Gypsum, Association is grateful for the invitation. A brief word about who we are: the Gypsum Association is the trade association for the gypsum industry - the manufacturers of gypsum board and lath a-d plaster. We have a membership of eight companies. These eight companies produce about 90% of the gypsum products manufactured in the United States ... closer to 94% actually. Our headquarters is in Evanston, Illinois. We have an east coast office in Washington, D.C. where the eastern manager handles technical and building code matters and maintains liaison between all of the government agencies and departments and our industry. We also have a west coast office in Los Angeles where our west coast representatives is heavily involved with the Uniform Building Code and ICBO. And then in the Evanston office our manager of technical and building code services, Herb Carlsen, bites his nails and loses his hair over these problems and various other projects that come in, such as conversion to metric and various other things. We also have a research associate at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington who is currently concentrating his efforts on the combustibility of building materials. His studies involve current testing methods, definitions, data analysis, and proposed new testing methods,.' It is anticipated that this program will lead to a better understanding of non-combustibility of building materials and systems. I mentioned that our members represent over 90% of gypsum products,' manufactured in the United States; it might be well to point out a couple of statistics about what that really means. Although chlorine oxidation has been found to be effective in destroying the CN ion, an excess of chlorine is needed to drive the reaction to completion. This often results in the formation of residual chloramines, which are toxic to aquatic life and often regulated by various states. The interhalogen, bromine chloride (BrCl), has been found to be just as effective but without the formation of persistent, residual chloramines. The hydrolysis and subsequent disproportionation of the highly-polar BrCl molecule essentially yields a solution of hypobromous acid (HOBr) and nonoxidizing hydrochloric acid (HC1). Studies have been carried out to directly compare the mechanism of CN destruction with chlorine and bromine chloride.

As a result of the Farmington explosion, the U. S. Bureau of Mines commissioned the National Academy of Engineering to a determine what steps could be taken in a short time frame to significantly reduce fatalities as a result of underground fire and explosion in coal mines. Three areas were named by the Academy as having the greatest potential; survival, communications, and rescue. The Bureau subsequently awarded a $3-5 million contract to the Special Systems Division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation for the development of prototype equipment and procedures. These were recently tested in a simulated emergency situation and will be delivered soon. Contractor recommendations for utilization and for further development effort will be studied and appropriate action taken.
