A full-scale geotechnical model of a 15-foot (4.6 m) wide coal mine entry in correlation with computer finite-element analysis (FEA) is being employed at the Bureau of Mines Spokane Research Center for basic research on roof-bolt support systems. Physical and computer modeling of various coal mine roof-bolt reinforcement systems will increase our basic knowledge of how roof supports function. This information, in correlation with computer FEA and underground verification tests, will provide a basis for establishing safer, more cost- effective roof control plans and help establish guidelines for employing fully grouted and conventional bolting systems. The basic rationale for the research, research approach, methods and equipment employed, results to date, and future research plans are described in this paper.

ABSTRACT Health and safety indicators help mine sites predict the likelihood of an event, advance initiatives to control risks, and track progress. Although useful to encourage organizations to work together, executing such risk assessments comes with challenges. This paper focuses on one trona mine’s experience in the development and implementation of a field level risk assessment program to help its entire organization understand and manage risk to an acceptable level. Through a transformational process of ongoing support and communication, Solvay Green River fostered a culture of trust and safety grounded in risk assessment, safety interactions, and hazard correction. The application of consistent risk assessment (RA) tools was critical to create a participatory workforce that not only talks about safety, but actively identifies energies that contribute to hazards and potential incidents. In this paper, reflecting on the mine’s process of RA implementation provides examples of likely barriers that sites may encounter when trying to document and manage risks. As discussed, consistent efforts to establish a participatory risk management program are worth the initial struggle to ultimately reduce incidents. INTRODUCTION Work-related health and safety (H&S) incidents often account for lost days on the job, contributing to organizational/financial and personal/social burdens [1-2]. Accompanying research demonstrates that risk and ambiguity around risk contribute to almost every decision that individuals make throughout the day [3-4]. In response, understanding individual attitudes toward risk has been unquestionably linked to predicting H&S behavior [5]. Although an obvious need exists to identify more comprehensive methods to assess and mitigate potential hazards, some argue that risk management is not given adequate attention in occupational H&S [6]. Additionally, research suggests that a current lack of knowledge, skills, and motivation are primary barriers to mitigating workplace risks [3-6]. Therefore, enhancing knowledge and awareness around risk-based decisions, including individuals’ abilities to understand, measure, and assign levels of risk to determine an appropriate response, is increasingly important in hazardous environments to predict and prevent incidents. This paper focuses on tailored approaches to field level risk assessment (FLRA), measurement, and common barriers to participating in such activities. The authors use a trona mine in Green River, Wyoming, as a case study to illustrate how the organization overcame widespread and site-specific challenges to implement a proactive risk management program. By discussing the mine’s tailored FLRA program, this case study contributes to the literature by first, providing examples of critical components that need to be in place to ensure successful risk management and second, context for continuous quality improvement that can foster a higher level of trust and empowerment on site."

Longwall mining began within the Pittsburgh coalbed of Pennsylvania (PA) in the early 1970?s. Originally, longwall mine layouts were designed to fit within existing room-and-pillar operations, where panels were limited to that of typical production panels, e.g. a few hundred feet wide by a few thousand feet long. In these early designs, the gate entries were comprised of chain pillars similar to those found along main entry systems or within pillar recovery sections. The modern longwall mine has little in common with their 1970?s predecessors. Today the entire mine layout is designed around the longwall mining method. The longwall panels have grown to well over one thousand feet in width with lengths now measured in miles. In addition, development pillar sizes and shapes are matched to specific performance requirements.

Like most of you, I would rather work on a job than talk about it. But it is fruitful to spend some time taking stock of important developments in the heavy construction field. One of the strongest recent movements affecting the industry has been the push for safety. I regret that it is a recent development. Not that builders were against safety. Too often though, it was easier to continue with dangerous old work methods than to try something new. Too often, it was easier for equipment manufacturers to build production tools with little consideration for worker safety. And too often, accidents and gruesome disasters occurred. The ultimate result of on-the-job injuries in construction and other industries was the Federal Government's Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Individual states were required either to accept OSHA or pass updated regulations at least as stringent as the Federal requirements. These new rules must be strictly obeyed -- not just because they carry civil and criminal sanctions -- but because they correct unsafe conditions and reduce hazardous acts. Though some OSHA measures have been criticized as superfluous, most of them do in fact save lives and limbs. Equally important, the tunneler who follows the new safety regulations can be fairly certain of an efficient, uninterrupted operation. Regulations do sometimes bring rewards.

The Western Mining Resource Center (WMRC) at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) received a grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to perform a study that will help reduce the amount of respirable dust generated from the cutting of coal. The study is based upon laboratory testing and field experience. This information is being used to develop a new cutterhead design in conjunction with Joy Mining Machinery. The new cutterhead design is being evaluated with existing computer models developed at CSM. The new continuous miner cutterhead will be tested at the Twenty Mile Coal Company’s Foidal Creek Mine. Baseline testing with the current cutterhead will also be performed. This paper presents laboratory test results, design methodology, and test results performed to date.

The efficiency of a coal mine ventilation circuit is usually measured by the ratio of the sum of the face quantities divided by the quantity supplied by the fans. Other types of systems use the power delivered to the power supplied to measure efficiency. This paper argues the case that the current measure may be inadequate and that by also looking at the power ratio, ventilation may be better managed. Problems associated with failing ventilation systems would be highlighted earlier so that crisis management could be avoided.

A cooperative study was undertaken by representatives of the environmental community, the mining industry, and state government to identify and resolve environmental issues associated with base and precious metal mining in a neutral atmosphere before a commercial mining development is announced. The study included testing Minnesota's as-yet-untried non-ferrous mining regulatory program using three hypothetical mining developments sited in environ-mentally sensitive areas where future mining could occur. Results include identification of critical paths for regulatory decision making, identification of particularly sensitive environ-mental issues that will need continued deliberation before resolution, and characterization of data necessary for environmental review and permitting decisions.

"SUMMARY Taru-Toge tunnel is being constructed using drilling-blasting technique as a part of expressway project connecting Shin-Tomei Expressway and Chuo Expressway at the boundary of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures in the Central Japan. The maximum overburden is about 400 m. The authors have been carrying out a monitoring program to measure dynamic and multi-parameter responses of tunnel during and soon after the blasting operations using a multi-parameter monitoring system (Acoustic Emissions (AE), Electric Potential (EP), Temperature (T), Humidity (H) and Air Pressure (P)) and stand-alone type compact accelerometers developed by the first author. The measured response involves dynamic vibrations and other measurable parameters caused by blasting as well as by stress-redistribution around the tunnel face. This is one of the first attempts in the world to measure the response of rock mass caused by blasting at a very close vicinity of the tunnel face. In this paper, the authors present the outcomes of this unique monitoring study on the dynamic responses of the Taru-Toge tunnel during excavation and discuss their implications in actual applications. INTRODUCTION The real time monitoring of the stability of tunnels are of great importance when tunnels are prone to failure during excavation such as rockbursting or squeezing (i.e. Aydan et al. 1993, 2001). Experimental studies by the authors showed that rock indicates distinct variations of multi-parameters during deformation and fracturing processes (i.e. Mizutani et al. 1976; Aydan and Daido 2002; Aydan et al. 2003, 2011). These may be used for the real-time assessment of the stability of rock structures. An application of this approach was done to the Taru-toge tunnel a part of expressway project connecting Shin-Tomei Expressway and Chuo Expressway at the boundary of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures in the Central Japan (Imazu et al. 2015). The parameters measured involve electric potential variations, acoustic emissions, rock temperature, temperature and humidity of the tunnel in addition to the measurements of convergence and loads on support members during the face advance."

Introduction In situ leaching (ISL) is an alternative method of mining uranium from deposits that are low-grade, deeplying, and water-saturated. ISL recovers uranium by transporting fluids through rock rather than by moving rock, a concept the Chinese developed over 2000 years ago for water production. This technique eventually evolved into production systems for oil, gas, sulfur, and salt. More recently, in situ methods have been developed to produce shale oil, gasified coal, geothermal energy, uranium, and copper. ISL uranium operations began in the early 1960s with Sabine Production Co. in south Texas. About the same time, Utah Construction and Mining Co. (Anderson and Richie, 1968) started similar operations in Wyoming's Shirley Basin. During the 1970s, six commercial operations were started in south Texas, (USBM, 1978) and a number of pilot operations were in various stages of development in Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. This paper reviews some of the technical and economic aspects of the ISL process and briefly discusses key subsurface engineering functions as¬sociated with well pattern design and operation. While flow characteristics of a deposit are of prime importance, the following information is also needed: Depth, ore grade, total contained metal, ore thickness, flow conductivity (permeability), void space in rock (porosity), mineral type and distribution, natural groundwater flow, and structural features. Solvent selection, which is important to the economic success of the operation, takes these factors into account: Composition, rate of metal solubilization, interaction with gangue minerals, impact on rock permeability, impact on materials of construction, trace metal solubilization, cost, availability, and handling problems. Overview of ISL An ISL operation consists of these functions (Fig. 1): 1. Chemicals to dissolve and maintain uranium in solution are prepared at the surface extraction facility. 2. A set of injection wells forces the solvent into rock pores of fractures using pressure in excess of the deposit's hydrostatic pressure. 3. Solvent travels through the rock and reacts with uranium minerals to dissolve them. The solvent usually consists of an oxidant and a complexing agent in an acidic or alkaline medium. 4. A set of production wells creates a low-pressure sump where metal-enriched solution is collected for transport to the surface. 5. The enriched solution is processed to recover uranium and to separate the leaching solution for recycling through the system. The economic performance of an in situ operation may be estimated by integrating these related factors: (1) the flow rate of solution processed through the system, (2) rates of fluid injection and production from wells, (3) the rate of mineral solubilization in the liquid phase, and (4) the volume of rock swept by the fluid. As these factors reveal, ISL involves the technical disciplines of petroleum engineering, ore deposit geology, and hydrometallurgical processing. Wellfield Design Just as mineral engineers use drillhole information to plan a conventional mine, in situ engineers use similar information to design a well field. Scientifically known as sepiolite, it is represented by the formula Si12Mg8O30(OH)4(H2O)4(8H2O). Sepiolite is a natural clay mineral composed of hydrous magnesium silicate, characterized by a structure of alternating blocks and tunnels that develop in the direction of the fiber. Each structural block contains two silica tetrahedral sheets surrounding a central layer of magnesium oxide- hydroxide. Sepiolite exists in two distinct forms in nature: alpha-sepiolite and beta-sepiolite. Alpha- sepiolite is amorphous, compact, and resembles pellets that look like sea froth, hence its Turkish name Luletasi. In contrast, beta-sepiolite appears as amorphous aggregates or small, flat, round particles. These two forms exhibit different physical properties. Meerschaum was also studied by Brauner and Preisinger in 1958, who agreed that it primarily consists of sepiolite (2MgO·3SiO2·nH2O). According to these researchers, water is present in its mineral, zeolitic, crystal, and structural forms. Meerschaum is commonly used for adsorbing various liquids, as an ion exchanger, and for dispersing and insulating paraffin in the chemical industry (Gokdemir and Dogan, 2011). Sepiolite deposits of the meerschaum type are primarily found in Turkey, Somalia, Tanzania, Kenya, and Mexico. Alongside high-quality, low-density, and highly porous meerschaum, Somalia also has sedimentary sepiolite formations. The total reserves of these deposits are estimated at around 50–100 million tons (Sariiz and Isik, 1995). Meerschaum, also known as “white gold” or “sepiolite,” is a unique mineral highly prized for its lightness, heat- resistant properties, and ability to be carved into intricate designs. Found predominantly in Eskisehir, Turkiye, meerschaum mining and processing have become significant contributors to the local economy and cultural heritage. This paper explores the history, economic importance, mining practices, and environmental impacts of meerschaum mining in Eskisehir and discusses the challenges and opportunities faced by the industry.

Mega projects present unique challenges with regard to estimating costs. With such projects, which may span decades, these challenges often begin as soon as a project is conceived. The importance of having a sound, resource based estimate avail-able early in the process cannot be overstated because it provides the basis for ongoing project decisions. For the final phase of providing an updated cost estimate, often while bidding by contractors is underway, the Engineer?s Estimate (EE) must incorporate present market conditions; account for possible volatile material price swings; be based on actual labor and fringe costs; rely on meaningful productivity rates; and accommodate any recent technology advances while identifying and allowing for risk factors. This paper explains the benefits associated with consultants adopting a contractor?s estimating approach when preparing the Engineer?s Estimate on mega projects like the various tunneling projects in New York City.

Therefore the Institute of Mining Engineering I from the RWTH Aachen University developed indicators and an assessment system for the mineral raw materials industry on operation, company and sector level on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit, BMWA) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR). In the course of the development of indicators for the raw materials industry quality indicators on different levels of the sustainability assessment procedure have been identified and developed. The following paper describes some of the results focussing on the development and integration of quality indicators into sustainability assessment systems."

It is indeed a rarity for a non-engineer, let alone a lawyer, to even be considered for a mining-related award, especially where that award is for significant contributions to technical progress in the mining and exploration sectors. So, when I was notified that I had received this award, I struggled for a topic that would meld the legal world that I operate in with the engineering driven world of exploration and extraction. The most exciting part of my job has always been the opportunity to absorb the technical details of the cases I work on and, in effect, translate them for a lay audience. Too often, I have found, lawyers, judges, legislators and yes, even regulators who lack a technical background simply give up trying to understand the details of the very conditions or processes that they are trying to describe and simply repeat phrases told to them by their client or by a retained expert.

The San Vicente Pipeline project involves the construction of an 8-1/2 foot diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile long tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel will be excavated in extremely variable geologic conditions consisting of strong granitic and metamorphic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. This paper discusses the challenging geologic conditions and some of the key design evaluations for the project. Currently design work for the project has been completed and construction will be underway by mid-2005.

Although primarily cut-and-cover excavations are required for replacement of the existing elevated I-93 interstate highway through the heart of Boston for the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) project, some mined tunnel construction was also undertaken. The mined tunneling conducted was the 22-m-wide northbound roadway structure which passed below a 20-m-deep operating underground subway station that was built in 1913. The innovative underpinning scheme used to support the subway station during construction resulted in the successful mining beneath the subway station with negligible vertical settlement. Two grouting galleries were carefully mined below the subway structure, and pre-grouting of the granulary, pervious glacial soils and weathered bedrock was carried out from these galleries. The reinforced concrete walls of the underpinning structure were constructed within three stacked drifts that were sequentially mined below each grouting gallery. After 11 cross adits were mined between the grouting galleries, cast-in-place post-tensioned girders that spanned between the stacked-drift walls were constructed to support the subway station. The stacked-drift walls also provided lateral support for the 22-m wide by 29-m long by13-m high opening beneath the girders.

The kinetics on the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied by use of series piezoelectric quartz crystal ( SPQC ). Arsenic ioninhibits the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, which is consistent with the previous results by other measuring method. This further demonstrates that the SPQC can monitor the chemical activity of the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Cupric ion accelerates the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The mechanism was discussed, it was considered that copper promotes the protein enzyme of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, rustic yanin, to form over the range of cupric ion concentration studied. There action order of cupric ion in accelerating the bacterial growth is 0.067. The growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is dependent on temperature, the apparent reaction activation energy decreases from25.56 kJ / mol to 18.32 kJ / mol because of the addition of 10 mg / L Cu(II) to the bacterial growth solution of pH 2.0 at initial inoculum of 10%.

Mineral resource classification relies on the expert assessment of a qualified person (QP) to determine which blocks of a 3D mineral resource model are classified as measured, indicated, or inferred. The decision is often based on a combination of quantitative parameters related to the estimation process and qualitative decisions based on previous experience or preconceptions not captured in the numerical model. As such, the procedure is subject to inconsistency, that is, blocks with similar qualities may end up in different categories, mainly due to the subjective nature of the approach. In this paper, we present a methodology to assist the qualified person in this task by clustering blocks with similar parameters and then classifying them into categories in a consistent and automatic manner that only requires the specification of a few hyper-parameters. The result is a consistent classification into resource categories comparable to the result of a classification done by a qualified person but fully consistent and generated in a short time frame. The procedure begins with repeatedly sub-sampling the block model to determine a distance matrix using an unsupervised random forest approach and then clustering the blocks using the associated distance matrix. Then, all the blocks in the model are classified using a supervised random forest approach, which gives a probability of belonging to each class. The initial class can be determined from the class probabilities. Support vector classification with a radial basis function kernel is utilized to smooth the boundaries between classes and define the final classification. An approach to tune the hyper-parameters of smoothing is provided. The methodology is demonstrated with two examples from two gold deposits. Results are comparable to the classification done by the project qualified person using conventional methods.

As the popularity of precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels is growing in North America, some problems related to grouting of, and near, these linings are starting to appear. The installation of a segmental lining behind a TBM requires that the annular space around the lining be quickly filled with grout to prevent collapse of the ground. In practice, the filling of the annulus is frequently delayed and takes place a distance behind the machine typically via grout ports centrally located in the segments. If partial collapse of the annulus has occurred, it may become necessary to use higher grouting pressures in an attempt to distribute the grout. There have been several occasions where these increased pressures have caused damage to the tunnel linings. Similarly, compaction grouting adjacent to a tunnel lining can cause damage. This paper quantifies the effects of such grouting on a typical precast lining.

At the same time that computers and robotics move the shop floor toward becoming the unmanned "factory of the future" [1], they increase the need within the overall production enterprise for new types of technicians and engineering professionals [2]. Based on previous works which examined, first, the evolution of the technology of manufacturing toward the flexibly-automated factory of the future and, second, the technical- professionalization of U.S. manufacturing sectors [1,3], this paper looks briefly at the workforce of the U.S. metals industry.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal?s 13.1 km overland conveyor (OLC) was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 trough belt type. Cost and performance optimization during initial design ended up with 5.4 mps belt speed, 1000 mm belt width to convey 1350tph, and 7 mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30 mtpa (million ton per annum). Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4 200 tph satisfactorily.
