PROJECT DESCRIPTION Alignment The Strenger Tunnel forms part of the S16 four-lane expressway between Landeckand Bludenz. The construction of this important East-West connection started in 1973with the Arlberg Road Tunnel as its key constituent. Beginning in 1992, solutions for the section between Pians and Flirsch were investigated. Efforts to conserve nature and to avoid potential avalanche and landslide areas led to a solution detouring the villages in the Stanz valley. The starting points were predetermind by the intersections at Pians in the East and at Flirsch in the West. As a result of the expected traffic load and the comparatively high gradient of 2.9%, both one-way, two-lane tubes were constructed at once. The north tube is 5.851 m long, the south tube 5.775 m, see Figure 1. Peng The highlights of this paper are : • The shield supports with lemniscate links will exert a tangential force on the roof strata, causing unnecessary and harmful roof movements, thus damaging the roof structure. The principal source of the tangential force is the horizontal movement of the point O, the pivotal joint between the canopy and the caving shield. When the support height is changed during setting, the point O will move along a curve upward and rearward toward the gob. As a result, it produces a vertical movement, causing the roof to move up a distance of ?d, and a horizontal movement toward the gob, creating vertical fractures in the roof. • The major purpose for employing the lemniscate-link system is to protect the hydraulic legs against the action of the bending moments induced by the tangential force that causes deformation or destruction of the legs. • Based on these two points, the author suggested that, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the lemniscate-link system and strengthen its advantageous features, a shield support with a new design of that mechanism has been developed. With the new design, the conventional rigid lemniscate links are replaced by hydraulic rams. When the pressure inside the rams reaches a certain level, the ram will yield.

CRU estimates that the global supply of metallurgical grade alumina (MGA) grew by 5 percent during 2005 to a little more than 61 Mt (67 million st). About 30.7 Mt (33.8 million st), or 50.3 percent, of that originated from Oceania (principally due to the commissioning of the CAR refinery in Australia) and Latin America. In this context, Chinese production surged by 20.5 percent year-on-year to 7.7 Mt (8.5 million st) on the crest of a 17-percent rise in that country’s primary aluminium production. Meanwhile, on the demand side, there was a 6.7 percent climb year-on-year in global consumption to 62.3 Mt (68.6 million st). This reflected a healthy demand for primary metal from aerospace, construction, packaging and passenger transportation (to a lesser degree) in the United States, China, Brazil, South Korea and India. So there was an overall supply deficit of more than 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st). This, combined with an 18.3-percent diminution in closing stocks (down to 35 days of requirement), lifted the average spot price of MGA by 17.6 percent year-on-year to US$448/t (US$406/st).

The Factorial Model Experimenters are often interested in systems that are multi-factorial. A multi-factorial system is one whose output is believed or known to be dependent on the particular settings of several inputs, or factors. We can think of these factors as defining a space, with each point in this space corresponding to a particular set of factor settings. Experimenting can be thought of as exploring this space - finding out how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed. There are several challenges in this exploration, among which are deciding what region to explore, designing an experiment that explores it most effectively, and describing the results of the exploration. This paper deals principally with the last of these; it shows how the factorial model can be used to describe how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed. A strength of the factorial model is that it treats the factors as causes of change in the system's response and focuses on relations among these causes. In particular, the factorial model focuses on whether causes act independently on the system (in a sense to be explained below), or whether they interact. This is important because the experimenter generally seeks to control the system, and because control based on causes that act independently of other causes is relatively simple, whereas control based on causes that interact is more challenging. Also, mapping the space - finding out how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed - will require less work if, during the exploration, it can be determined which of the causes act independently. For the sake of example, let us assume that the space we are exploring is three-dimensional, and that we have already defined, for each of the three factors, the range of interest. Let us consider all the ways in which the response of the system might depend on the settings of these three factors. In the simplest case, the response in this region does not depend on any of the factors. The response is constant throughout the space, at say, 80 units.

So, while developing its Two Piece Assembly, Goodyear noted a number of trends in the mining industry: •The global market sophistication of equipment and operations requires the packaging of products and services to provide the best return on investment. •Industry consolidation and growth have resulted in fewer, more powerful mining houses, leveraging purchasing power in the marketplace. •User productivity demands continue to drive original equipment manufacturers to develop higher pay-load equipment. •Technology needs include improved ergonomics, to reduce fatigue and increase operator productivity. •Increased laws and environmental regulation prohibit on-site whole tire disposal practices.

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22-m (4-ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that SMCRA sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. There has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analyses indicate that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope.

Kennecott Copper Corporation and the U. S. Bureau of Mines cooperated in a full-scale slope stability research project at the Kimbley Pit near Ely, Nevada. The west wall of the Kimbley Pit was mined from an over-all slope angle of 45° to an over-all slope angle of 57° and the pit was deepened nearly 50 feet. Mining was begun February 10, 1966, and completed October 30, 1966. Approximately 2.55 million tons of ore and waste were mined. The project was designed and carried out to learn more about the behavior of a pit wall as its slope angle is steepened and to obtain a possible insight into engineering parameters for use in design of future slopes. Data from this project are presented as obtained from (1) instruments installed in two adits for deformation and displacement measurements, (2) a subsidence network installed on the surface above the steepened wall, (3) pre- and post-mining observations of stress in rock, (4) sonic-velocity measurements, and (5) seismic and microseismic investigations. Changes occurred in measured quantities as the slope was steepened but stopped when mining was completed. Agreement was noted between the measured changes and predicted changes obtained from calculations using the finite element technique. Subsidence surveys and microseismic studies show the steepened pit wall to be stable.

Faced with rapid growth that strained their current water supply capabilities, the Somerset Water Service in Somerset, KY decided to construct a new intake structure on the shore of Lake Cumberland. With an existing intake structure within 200', very hard limestone geology with calcite geodes, and lake level fluctuations as high as 50 ' ,this project posed many challenges. The following paper discusses how mechanical excavation techniques were used to overcome these obstacles.

Good times make for happy miners. And the past few years have seen a lot of smiling mining engineers, geologists, metallurgists, corporate executives, analysts, investment bankers and shareholders. And nowhere was that more evident than at the 74th Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) annual meeting. The meeting, held in Toronto March 5-8, attracted a record 14,500 people. Of those, the PDAC said attendees came from an estimated 100 countries. And about 40 countries sent national delegations to the meeting. Argentina, for example, sent nearly 100 people. The PDAC meeting has always been a event where companies and individuals can get a look at numerous properties in all parts of the world that could potentially become major mines. And through the many receptions, hospitality suites and just sitting in the local restaurants and taverns, deals are usually made.

In responding to mine fires and explosions, accurate and timely analysis of the mine atmosphere is critical in making decisions regarding firefighting, mine rescue and mine recovery operations. For many years instantaneous analyses were available to rescue workers using handheld or portable gas detection equipment, including infrared, electrochemical, or catalytic measuring devices for a limited number of specific gases such as oxygen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Instantaneous sensing technology is not available for all gases, such as nitrogen and hydrocarbons, found in a mine fire atmosphere and cross-sensitivity can be a problem with this technology. For these reasons, air samples are collected for injection into a gas chromatograph for a complete and accurate analysis for all gases including oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, as well as ?fire gases? such as hydrogen, ethylene, ethane, and acetylene. This method requires additional time for transporting the samples to the laboratory near the mine, as well as an instrument operator to inject the samples for analysis. The use of a portable micro gas chromatograph with a continuous and automatic injection system has been implemented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during mine recovery operations. The device directly samples the mine atmosphere from an underground location every twelve minutes and automatically analyzes the samples for all of the mine fire gases. The portable unit utilizes micro technology and the operating software has been modified to perform the calculation of sample results in and Excel® spreadsheet without user interaction. This paper describes the micro gas chromatograph system and its use at a recent mine recovery operation. The automated remote operation of the micro gas chromatograph has been shown to be a good alternative to infrared and electrochemical sensors used for mine atmosphere analysis.

The planning and operation of ventilation network systems for uranium mines require special considerations since ventilation is the primary technique of controlling ambient concentrations of radon progeny. The major environmental challenge facing the ventilation engineer is the requirement to dilute radon progeny to below the Working Level Month per year of worker exposure required by law. The application of large airflow volumes and the utilization of low residence times constitute some of the factors considered by the design engineer. Good mine planning and sequencing are also critical for protecting the health of miners. The mine ventilation must have such characteristics as flexibility, high air distribution efficiency, rapid air transit times, zero recirculation and no short-circuiting. A well established maintenance program for all ventilation appliances must be in place to guarantee control of the distribution system. Real-time monitoring systems permit assurance the adequate quality of air is delivered to working places. A case study for an operating mine is used to demonstrate how the ventilation system is successfully managed and operated using the above concepts.

Spray drying is the principal drying method used in the production of over six million tons annually of beneficiated kaolin in Georgia. Thirty-three dryers in the Georgia Kaolin belt comprise the highest concentration of large tonnage spray dryers in the world. The steady growth of spray drying in the U.S. kaolin industry is paced by advances in design and development of large spray dryers which have led to large scale new applications in mining and related industries.

"Quang Ninh province is located in the north east of Vietnam and the coal mining in the province generates two thirds of the province’s GDP. The coal is extracted from both open pit and underground mines for the country’s complete coal export and by a share of more than 90% for domestic coal usage. Overburden generated through open pit mines is piled up nearby in the form of large waste rock dumps. The side-hill fill dumping near open pit mines is the source of environmental degradation in the region. Among the current problems at solid waste rock dump sites are dust emissions during and after dumping as well as Acid Rock Drainage (ARD). One of the major existing problems at waste rock dumps is dump stability (comprising erosion, sliding and subsidence issues). The RAME R&D project (Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam) is - among other activities - actively involved in the research for stabilisation and rehabilitation of mine waste rock dumps in Vietnam in the form of several sub-projects. The Institute of Mining Engineering I of RWTH Aachen University is leading the sub-project of mine waste dump stabilisation in co-operation with Chair of Geotechnical Engineering and Brenk Systemplanung GmbH. Mine waste dumping in the form of layers as an alternative to the side-hill fill dumping is expected to bring up environmental and economical benefits by minimising the problems of dump sites with the contribution to a sustainable development. Reduction of the post construction settlements, long term stable dump profile with minimum erosion, improvement of material parameters for geotechnical slope stability through compaction from hauling trucks as well as economical evaluation of new dumping concepts are the areas of the current research. The project has been financed by German Federal Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF). The ultimate aim of the sub-project is the compilation of the project results in the form of a "Best Practice Guide" and software based "Decision Support System" for planning and management of solid mine waste dumps."

The motion of the charge inside a grinding mill is of considerable practical importance. The dynamics of grinding mills have been the subject of study by a number of workers because it can accurately predict: i) the power drawn by the mill, ii) the distribution of forces inside the mill, and hence the wear rate of balls as well as the liners, and iii) mass transport of milled product through the porous ball charge. Some of the earlier analyses of the motion of a charge of particulate material in a tumbling mill were reported by White (1904), Davis (1919), and Dyer (1945) and have been reviewed by Rose and Sullivan (1958). In these works, frictional force at the wall of the mill and between the colliding balls, and the interaction of different ball trajectories, was not considered. Moreover, it was assumed that the profile of the tumbling charge is independent of the degree of filling, which is generally not true. However, all this work led to the identification of so-called "equilibrium surface" which is the plane that separates the rotating charge into two regions. The inner region is static; here there is no motion relative to the mill shell. The other region is a shear region where either the balls flow down the surface of the charge (cascading motion), or are projected out of the surface and follow approximately parabolic paths (cataracting motion).

First of all, I want to thank John Dunlap for asking me to this AIME meeting in Denver. I was first introduced to Denver and The Rocky Mountains more than ten years ago and immediately decided it was one of the most attractive spots in the world. I've come back many times since and still welcome any opportunity to return, even if it means I have to prepare and give a paper on potash. When John Dunlap gave me this assignment, he told me that the program would include papers on the geology of potash, papers on new discovered potash deposits and new mines and asked me to discuss potash from the commercial point of view. He also asked me to include a supply/demand outlook for potash. However, one thing he did not mention was "how far into the future he wanted me to look" and it seems to me the time element is a crucial factor to you who are both geologists and miners as well as to me. In your case, you have to look far enough into the future to give you time to explore, find, evaluate, develop, and bring into production a commercial deposit. My mining associates and friends don't agree on how long that takes but it's probably somewhere in the range of eight to fifteen years. But, they all agree on one thing and that is that the time required is continually getting longer. Now my time problem is just the opposite. It is "relatively" easy, and I stress relatively, to identify and evaluate the importance of the various factors that impact on both the supply of and demand for a commodity such as potash if the time period is today. It gets a little tough if one has to project into tomorrow or next week or next month. And when we start talking in terms of a year, five years or ten or fifteen years, things really get sticky and the old crystal ball becomes mighty cloudy. But we economists and forecasters are not known for our temerity so let me get on with the job at hand and take a look at the world potash supply/demand outlook.

The present U.S. production of bromine is from inland brines located in Arkansas and Michigan. The most concentrated domestic brines (up to 5,000 ppm bromide)are situated in Arkansas. Less concentrated brines(about 2,500 ppm bromide) are located in Michigan. The amount of bromine sold or used in the United States came from three companies operating in those two states. Its value was $191 million. In 2004, the estimated U.S. bromine production was 222 kt (244,000 st). That compared with 216 kt (238,000st) produced in 2003.

Amid some of the worst economic conditions that the mining industry has been faced with in more than a decade, the mood among the large crowd at the 114th Annual Northwest Mining Association?s annual meeting was surprisingly upbeat. More than 2,200 attendees showed up at John Asuaga?s Golden Nugget Casino in Reno, NV for the conference held Dec. 1-5. And more than 200 companies exhibited in 240 spaces, including SME and the Minerals Information Institute. The number of attendees and exhibitors were the most for the conference in more than 10 years. The conference was held in Reno/Sparks for just the second time in its illustrious history but began under the cloud of global financial turmoil. Prior to, and during the conference, the industry news headlines were grim, to say the least. An alarming number of mine plans and expansions had been put on hold; hundreds of miners across the United States had been or were in the process of being laid off; commodity prices were falling and some of the biggest mergers in the industry fell through while miners around the world put the brakes on to take a wait-and-see approach. It was a painful time for many, but the downsizing actions taken by many mining companies was exactly what needed to happen, according to Industry Outlook Luncheon featured speaker Frederick Sturm. He is the executive vice president and chief investment strategist and member of Mackenzie?s Investment team. He has earned a reputation as one of Canada?s leading investors in natural-based companies and he also manages the Ivy Global Natural Resource Fund in the United States Sturm said that the mining industry has fallen hard and that he expects it to bounce back quickly, before falling hard again. In these tough times, he said, the companies that have pulled back on production early are doing the right thing in the long run.

Oregon Resources Corporation (ORC), an industrial minerals mining company, is currently engaged in the development of a new process design that will allow the unique paleo-beach placer deposits of southwestern Oregon to be mined efficiently and economically, creating an additional domestic source for chromite, garnet, and zircon. Engineering design has been guided by the variable geology and mineralogy of the paleo-beach placer deposits as well as the need for a dry tailing scheme that resolves a lack of water resources at the placer locations and at the same time eliminates the need for slurry settling ponds, typical of paleo-beach placer operations in North America. Metallurgical study of the placer material was grouped into four distinct samples based on marine terrace deposition, geological facies, and mineralogy. Because the metallurgical samples represented the extremes likely to be encountered in all future Oregon paleo-beach placer ores, the process design is highly dynamic and will successfully adjust to meet the production needs. Water availability at the mining area is seasonal and will not support a typical placer operation?s water requirement needs for heavy mineral concentration. For this reason, ORC has developed a plan to construct the ore processing facilities near Coos Bay, where a municipal source of water is available. Raw ore will be transported from the mining sites approximately twenty miles one way to the processing facility with return loads hauling tailings back to the active pit. The need to haul dry tailings, return dry material to the pit for reclamation, and limit the amount of water being purchased from the municipality has driven the design of a unique water reclamation system. BACKGROUND Location and Access Economic concentrations of ?black sand? or heavy mineral (minerals with specific gravity greater than 2.85) have been recognized and studied in marine placers from Coos Bay to the mouth of the Rogue River, a distance of approximately 75 miles along the southern Oregon coast (Hornor, 1918; Griggs, 1945)(Figure 1). ORC will begin mining existing reserves approximately 20 miles south of Coos Bay in a region known locally as Seven Devils. Ore will be trucked north to the processing site near Coos Bay via use of existing county and state roads, including U.S. 101. The available facilities at the processing site include highway, rail, municipal water and electricity, natural gas, and a deep water port. At the time of this writing, the rail line had been abandoned, but was being pursued by the International Port of Coos Bay. It is anticipated that this will be serviceable at some time in the future. History The southern Oregon marine placers have garnered the interests of miners since 1852, when present day beaches were exploited for gold. The beach deposits were small and irregular in nature and were easily washed away by the major storms the coast endures during the winter months (Hornor, 1918). [ ] In the 1920?s, deposits at the beach were followed upstream to their paleo-beach terrace origins (Pardee, 1934). These terrace placers were mined, but with little success, as the cost of mining and processing was greater than at the present day beach deposits. The greatest effort to understand and delineate the paleo-beach terrace placers came during World War II. As the need for a domestic source of steel hardening chromite was evident, the heavy mineral bearing placers of southwestern Oregon provided just that. The U.S. Geological Survey, under guidance from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, began exploration drilling of the paleo-beach terraces in 1940 (Griggs, 1945). This work was part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits and would ultimately supply much needed chromite for the war efforts. Discrete (digital) signal processing techniques are proving to be very valuable tools for miners using the block cave method. Waveform analysis of different measured signals associated with active mining provides valuable information on production dynamics and safe operation of the mine. For example, correlation of the three-dimensional surface displacement velocity waveform and the production output waveform reveals a remarkably predictable time-varying physical process. In this paper, the authors discuss the signal processing techniques used to study these relationships, as well as the related implications for mining.

The Energy Act of 1992 has many users of ac-induction motors eyeing premium-efficiency motors with mixed feelings and perhaps some confusion. When the October 1997deadline arrives for compliance with the1992 standards, the winners will be the environment due to reduced need for more power generating plants and the petroleum economy because of reduced dependency on foreign oil. But what will it mean for industrial users? The most obvious benefit is the potential for smaller electricity bills. Motors account for about 64% of the electricity consumed in the United States, at a yearly cost of $112 billion. Every 1% reduction in motor demand cuts 0.64%, or $716 million, off the industry wide bill. Higher efficiency motors also run cooler. This lightens the load on air-conditioning systems and further reduces plant demand. Lower total demand can lead to lower rates by helping to minimize peak-demand surcharges. As rates increase over time, these savings get bigger.
