I must, however, confess to considerable doubts about the validity of the distribution of gold in "free" and "locked" form set out in Tables I to IV.

Metal inventories are usually reported in financial statements of mining companies. However, the value of these inventories can be reliable only if the metals in stock are measured within acceptable tolerances. Reliable metal balancing requires accurate mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis. Many mining companies are usually unable to validate the accuracy of metals in inventories at the end of their financial year. This is mainly due to poor mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis practices. This has an adverse impact on metallurgical accounting and metal valuation. In addition, it puts a lot of stress on external auditors, who have the duty to recommend the approval of the financial statements to the board of directors. Although a full value chain of metal reconciliation includes the accuracy of Mineral Reserve definition and grade control at the mine, this paper discusses the implementation of best practices for mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis at processing plants. This is an important aspect of sampling and reconciliation that is required in order to improve the reporting of inventories in the financial statements of public mining companies. A generalization of Gy?s 1979 model for the variance of the fundamental sampling error has been proposed at WCSB2?2005 by Geelhoed. This generalized model can potentially lead to a better correspondence with actual sampling processes. However, a new parameter is required by the new model: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particles?(Cij). It is important that this new parameter, which is at the basis of the new theory, is well understood in the sampling and blending community. In order to clarify the meaning of Cijand to prevent potential misinterpretation of Cij, we discuss the difference between Cij and an intuitively associated, but different, parameter: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particle types?(Mij). In this contribution, the theoretical difference between both parameters is clarified. Simulations demonstrate that, numerically, the difference between Cij and Mij can be large. Some additional advantages of the approach which uses Cij are discussed: (i) the approach based on Cijis more general; (ii) in all cases where Mij is known, Cij can be determined as well, while the reverse is not true; (iii) an equation already exists that relates the sample variance to the value of Cij.

Multiphase microstructures in steel have been intensively studied in the past years, but combining non-equilibrium phases still offers a great potential for further development of these steel grades. Thus, improved combinations of mechanical properties can be obtained with microstructures formed by bainite or martensite, in combination with retained austenite. In particular, microstructures on the basis of carbon-depleted martensite and retained austenite can be produced by the very promising production process named quenching and partitioning (Q&P). Originally, the Q&P process aimed to avoid the formation of bainite during the heat treatment. However, the process does provide the possibility for (carbide-free) bainite formation during the partitioning step, i.e. in the presence of martensite. This article evaluates this approach, considering thatthe formation of bainite from austenite is strongly influenced by the preceding formation of martensite. Although the accelerating effect of the presence of martensite during bainite formation has been observed, it is not yet fully understood, and experimental and theoretical studies are being performed in order to come to a more effective exploitation of these processes for the formation of multiphase microstructures.

"More intense furnace operations require effective cooling in order to achieve low refractory wear and good furnace lifetimes, making cooling technology an important aspect of furnace operations. However, the use of water - today’s standard cooling medium - has some disadvantages, as it can cause problems both during furnace start-up and operation, namely hydration problems, corrosion, and explosions. Apart from these aspects, the energy that is removed by extensive cooling cannot be recovered and is normally lost in the cooling towers.With METTOP’s new patented cooling technology it is possible to overcome the disadvantages of water by using an alternative cooling medium, namely ionic liquids (ILs). The main advantage of ILs is the fact that there is no risk of explosion should this liquid come in contact with molten metal. Furthermore, ILs can be used at higher temperatures than water - up to 200°C. This relatively high cooling medium temperature avoids hydration and corrosion problems and allows recovery of the energy by combining the ILTEC system and the organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology, for example.Due to the removal of the explosion risk, much higher safety standards can be achieved, particularly in critical areas such as tap-holes"

The process flows of the three flotation circuits at the concentrator of the Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Ltd are described. Because of the complexity of the circuits and the associated reagent regime, the plant is equipped with a comprehensive range of control equipment. The different process-control strategies are discussed, and the modifications that have been necessary to the stabilizing control loops in the copper, lead, and zinc flotation circuits are shown in detail. It is concluded that the control strategies have continued to bring about benefits and improvements to the process.

"The most commonly used high-chromium white cast iron (HCWCI) is the hypoeutectic white cast iron that contains 2–3.5 wt.% C and 10–30% Cr. This type of material relies on hard, brittle M7C3 carbides to impart good wear resistance. Due to its good wear resistance, this material has found application in the mining industry and cement industry. However, it has low fracture strength and this challenge led to research aimed at refining the microstructure. This was done by the addition of niobium in the range between 0.1 and 0.6 wt.%. In the as-cast condition, the addition of niobium was found to increase the fracture strength due to the finer eutectic microstructure. The hardness was also found to have increased slightly compared to the reference alloy with no niobium additions. Low fracture strength after heat treatment was observed in the Nb-added HCWCI, which is believed to have been caused by the precipitation of secondary carbides and the transformation of the matrix from austenite to martensitic. IntroductionFor the past few years Mintek has been involved in a project in which a number of alloys have been identified for grinding media applications. The high-chromium white cast iron (HCWCI) alloys were among the alloys researched for this application. The knowledge acquired from the grinding ball media research has now been extended to mill liners, which have traditionally been made of manganese-, chromium- and chrome-molybdenum steels. The replacement of worn mill liners costs the mining industry a significant amount of money and this has led to a need for continuous research to prolong the life of the liners. During milling operations, liner wear has an adverse effect on the capacity of the mill, the energy efficiency and milling efficiency and finally leads to relining, to replace worn liners."

"The working environment for ground support installation in mines has improved during the last 20–30 years, with more mechanized equipment for installation of ground support elements such as bolts, cable bolts, and screens. Ground support installation productivity has, however, not followed the same development curve, remaining more or less constant. In some cases, for example the mechanized installation of bolts, productivity has even dropped. One reason for this is that modern mechanized bolt rigs are complex. In this paper we evaluate manual and mechanized ground support systems, propose a way to measure the productivity of bolt rigs, and make relevant comparisons between different mines and equipment. Some productivity measures for rock reinforcement are suggested, using productivity results from eight case study mines.IntroductionTo improve safety for operators and equipment underground, ground support systems (bolts, screens, etc.) are installed in mines to stabilize the rock mass (Hoek, Kaiser, and Bawden, 1995). Important questions to ask when selecting a ground support system include where ground stability problems are located, why they have occurred, how problems should be addressed, and when and how the ground support system should be installed (Hadjigeorgiou and Potvin, 2011). The performance of bolting and screening operations in underground mines is important for both safety and productivity reasons. With greater mine depths and an increasing focus on safety, ground support has become a significant bottleneck in the production process of many mines.Many factors play a role in establishing safe and stable underground structures. Equally, there are several factors to consider in productivity, including the mining method, organization, logistics, mechanization level, and procedures. Today, most mines in Scandinavia have changed from manual to mechanized bolting, as this improves operator safety and arguably boosts net capacity. Internationally, however, manual installation of bolts remains common, with some claiming that manual installation is more productive (Bawden, 2011)."

The use of SO2/air gas mixtures as an oxidant to precipitate Mn from Co(II) leach liquors was investigated. The effects of SO2/air ratio, pH and temperature on Mn precipitation were evaluated. It was found that the use of SO2/air gas mixtures resulted in significantly higher Mn precipitation kinetics compared to using air or pure O2 alone. The SO2/air ratio was varied from 0% to 6% SO2(v/v) in air and similar Mn removals were achieved at 0.75% to 3% SO2 at pH 3. The solution pH was varied from pH 2 to pH 4; Mn precipitation did not increase considerably from pH 2 to pH 3, but increased significantly at pH values higher than pH 3. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased as pH increased, with 1% Co co-precipitation at pH 3. An increase in temperature from 30°C to 60°C also increased Mn precipitation and 100% Mn precipitated at 50°C. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased significantly with an increase in temperature. An activation energy of 25 kJ/mol was calculated from the Arrhenius plot, which is an indication that the precipitation reactions were both chemically and diffusion controlled. XRD analysis showed that Mn precipitated in the form of Mn2O3 instead of MnO2 that was predicted from thermodynamic data. SEM and XRD analysis also revealed that the precipitate consisted mainly of gypsum or bassanite (99%), with the Mn containing phase (< 1%) distributed within the gypsum phase. After inflation, energy is probably today&apos;s most talked-about and controversial economic issue. It is a plentiful supply of energy that has permitted each of us to live a life of convenience that is matched only by the most fortunate of the aristocracy in history.

The Chamber of Mines Research Organization has been evaluating three membrane-desalination processes for use within the South African mining industry. These processes are electrodialysis reversal (EDR), tubular reverse osmosis (IRO), and slurry precipitation and recycle reverse osmosis (SPARRO). The evaluation of EDR and TRO is complete, and the operating costs (1988) associated with each process are expected to be about 50 cents per kilolitre for a plant of 50 l/s (4 Ml/d) installed capacity. The SPARRO process is still being evaluated. Pilot plant results, water Qualities, and expected capital costs are presented where appropriate.

The pattern of mining-induced fractures ahead of stope faces in deep-level gold mines, as revealed by petroscopic observations, is described. It is shown that there are zones of fractured and unfractured rock ahead of the face, which are about I m wide and continue as discrete entities for at least 12 m parallel to the face and at least 5 m vertically. These zones do not form continuously as mining progresses, but develop from time to time, leaving a solid zone between the fractured zones. The maximum depth of fracturing ahead of the face depends on the rate of energy release.

High titania slag is produced by the smelting of ilmenite and a suitable carbonaceous reductant in electric furnaces. Currently liquid slag is cast into large blocks, which take about 10 days to cool down before they can be crushed, milled and classified into two final products. The two products, chloride and sulphate grade slag, are differentiated according to their size. Granulation of titania slag has been identified as a possible alternative to the conventional block route. This paper discusses some of the work carried out at Exxaro Research and Development to investigate both wet and dry granulation of titania slag.

ABSTRACT The recently introduced concept of negative taxation complicates estimation of the distributable profit of certain South African gold mines, and an assisted mine could operate at a working loss and yet produce an overall profit for distribution amongst its shareholders. A simple diagram is presented from which the approximate working profit or loss, taxation payable or tax credit received, and the distributable profit of an assisted mine can be estimated directly for any combination of the four main variable operational factors: tonnage milled, recovery grade, unit cost and capital expenditure. INTRODUCTION The effects on the working profits of South African Gold mines caused by changes in unit working costs, recovery grade, tonnage milled and capital expenditure are readily estimated. For normal tax- and lease-paying mines the distributable profit is related to the working profit and the latter is a commonly accepted comparative measure of the profitability of an operation. However, the recently introduced concept of State assistance in the form of negative taxation1, i.e. a tax credit, for mines with a life of less than eight years complicates such estimates. A requirement of State assistance is that an assisted mine must lower its normal pay limit by 16 to 20 per cent, and it will be possible for a mine to operate at a working loss and yet produce an overall profit for distribution amongst its shareholders. In the case of an assisted mine it is therefore necessary for management to judge the effects of changes in unit costs, grade, etc., in terms of distributable profit instead of working profit. This will require repeated calculation of tax to be paid or tax credits that will be received under the numerous possible combinations of the four main variable factors. However, with the aid of the diagram illustrated in Fig. 1, it is possible to assess at a glance the practical effect of these variables on the distributable profit of an operation not subject to tax on the normal formula, or small mine formula, with sufficient accuracy to decide whether a detailed analysis is required. USE OF THE DIAGRAM From the central point &apos;X&apos; in Fig. 1, a range of tonnages milled per annum has been plotted along the north-bearing axis, a series of costs per ton milled in the northwestern quadrant, recovery grades in the northeastern quadrant, and capital expenditures in the southwestern quadrant. Starting from the tonnage milled per annum, a line is drawn east and west across the two northern quadrants up to the points where it reaches the desired cost- and grade-lines. From these points two north-south lines are drawn into the southern quadrants. A further line is drawn to the east from the point where the western north-south line crosses the desired capital expenditure. Distributable profit is read off in the southeastern quadrant where this line intersects the eastern north-south line. Every possible combination of
