This paper describes the state of the art in backfilling techniques used on East Driefontein Gold Mine. Areas covered are the preparation plant, the distribution plant, the pipeline network and finally placement techniques. The in-situ performance of placed backfill has been assessed by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization, and results to date will be shared. Details of the backfill expansion programme that will enable this facility to be made available to all working places are included. Benefits obtained by the introduction of backfilling are described, together with certain management aspects to be considered in the control of quality and quantity of support supplied via a pipeline.

The Bond standard grindability test provides a Work Index that is widely used to estimate the energy required for grinding, but the test cannot be applied to fine materials such as plant tailings and middlings. For such materials, a comparative grinding test must be used in which a reference material from an operating plant is ground in a laboratory mill to determine the 'equivalent' energy consumption per revolution of the laboratory mill. As the Bond grindability test mill and its operating conditions are specified, its equivalent energy consumption per revolution should be a constant, here designated as B. Once B has been determined, the mill can be used to estimate the grindability of fine materials without the need for reference materials. A value of B can be calculated from any Bond grindability test, and 245 tests that were conducted at Mintek were examined to determine its value. A wide range of values was found, but most of them were grouped around 198 x 10- 7 kWh/rev, which is taken as the best estimate of B that is available at present. Values of B that are not close to this figure are obtained from materials for which the Bond grindability test gives misleading or 'spurious' Work Indexes. These spurious Work Indexes lead to the apparent departure of B from its true value. Some limitations of the Bond grindability test arise from its use of a mill without litters and of screening, instead of classification, to close the circuit.

"In order to be able to map the variation in the concentration of elements in soils, it is necessary to sample at intervals that will give adequate coverage of the area and will allow determination of the rate of fluctuation of concentration with distance in any environment. This rate of fluctuation with distance can be referred to as the continuity of concentration.The continuity of concentration in soils varies according to the chemical characteristics of the element being considered, the underlying rock type or orebody and in response to the dispersion processes that operated during soil formation. Within any environment there is a maximum distance between sampling points within which adjacent sample values are related. This distance, the critical sampling interval, can be determined by means of a correlograrm.Where the sampling grid has been chosen to provide an adequate coverage over unmineralized rock, adjacent samples being related, anomalies may be missed if the element continuity in the anomaly is less than in the background. Results show that a knowledge of the critical sampling interval of the environment being examined may used to select a more efficient sampling pattern for a geochemical survey."

The first joint colloquium between the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the South African Branch of the Institution of Metallurgists was held in Kelvin House on 23rd April, 1981. About eighty delegates registered, the majority being associated with the local branch of the Institution of Metallurgists. Types of Abrasion and Wear Professor A. Ball, of the University of Cape Town, gave the opening address, which he entitled 'Some Thoughts on Abrasion and Wear'. In his thoughtprovoking talk, he quoted some figures showing that, in the highly industrialized countries, loss by wear and abrasion might amount to about 4 per cent of the gross national product but, in the Republic of South Africa, it was believed to be about 6 per cent of the gross national productprobably associated with the massive influence of mining in our economy. Professor Ball described wear as being of three main types.

Traditionally, characterisation of the mineralogy and textures of ore and rock samples were based on observations of hand specimens and thin sections using an optical microscope. The extent of the data collection was limited by the available tools and thus variations in mineralogy and texture were generally not described by quantitative data. These qualitative to semi-quantitative approaches, even though well established over the years, resulted in variable observations and data sets. The data were unlikely to be representative of a sample and limited statistical validity meant the results could not be reliably used in modern digital mining design and planning. With recently developed SEM based quantitative mineralogy tools and the corresponding methodologies, ore textures can be quantified and compared numerically. The numerical data can not only enhance the understanding of an orebody in geological terms, but can also be used in the creation of metallurgical models for mine and mineral processing design and simulation. These capabilities provide valuable inputs to risk assessment studies and the evaluation of mineral projects.

The proceedings of the Centenary Banquet that was held on Friday, 25 March 1994 at The Bal Room of The Carlton at 19:30 follow. Dr H. Scot-Russell The Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa-a forerunner of this Institute-was founded at a meeting held in Johannesburg on the 24th of March, 1894. One of the traditions established early in the life of the Society was the Annual Dinner, which became a major event in Johannesburg's social calendar. It was always attended by people of stature in the industry and in the community, and was usually addressed by a high-ranking Government figure. We are delighted that, on this one hundredth birthday of the Institute, we have been able to continue the tradition. I welcome you, Mr State President, and your charming wife, and we look forward to hearing your address later this evening.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy mourns the passing of one of its most distinguished sons. Professor J. de V. The Institute has concluded an agreement with the Chamber of Mines whereby the Chamber Librarian maintains a section in the Library for the Institute. Surface effects of underground mining South Africa is blessed with vast mineral resources. It is essential to exploit those reserves if the country is to remain economically viable. About 90 percent of the coal mined underground in the U.S.A. today is mined by the room-and-pillar system. The productivity of the system dropped from about 14,1t per man-day in 1969 to about 7,3 t per man-day in 1978. Since 1974, the U.S. Department of Energy (formerly the U.S. Bureau of Mines) has been engaged in research to improve the production and productivity of the room-and-pillar system. The effort involves the development of integrated, automated, and remote-controlled equipment and systems including remote-controlled continuous miners, automated miner-bolters, automated extraction systems, continuous haulage systems for use behind miners, and remote-controlled equipment for miners, bolters, and shuttle cars. These systems are discussed briefly, the discussion being related primarily to coal winning, although the concepts could be utilized in room-and-pillar systems in mines other than coal mines.

Centrifugal slurry pump station and deposition sites are a common feature of many mines and mineral processing plants. Yanacocha Mine has completed the design of a pump station consisting of two trains of four pumps each. A number of trade-off studies was conducted to optimize the pump station design. The most significant of these was determining the drive types for the slurry pumps. The pump station duty can vary considerably due to the number of deposition points round the disposal site. The standard solution to this problem on a multi-stage pump train is to install one pump with a variable speed drive to control the pump station output by varying the speed of this pump and stopping and starting other stages. However, there are a number of negative impacts associated with this approach. These include head losses through pumps that are stationary or ?wind-milling?, different wear life on pumps that are running and pumps that are stationary, and slower response to the control system with the possibility of hunting. The use of variable speed drives on all the pumps was considered as an alternative to the standard solution. The factors considered in comparing these options were the control and operational differences, the pump efficiencies and absorbed power, the expected pump wear life, the impact on pump maintenance and the cost of the drive options. For this project the option of using all variable speed drives was selected. The paper presents the following aspects of the study: ?Description of the various options investigated. This includes a discussion on the required duty and the drive options. ?Technical comparison between the options. ?Description of the factors influencing pump performance and life.

In order to assess the requirements for online matching when using a transverse electric field (E-field) applicator to treat mineral ores continuously, the effect of varying load properties on matching has been investigated by simulation. The effective permittivity of the ore to be treated is expected to show variation on both short (< 1 s ) and long (minutes) time scales. By modelling the ore as a series of slices with alternating effective permittivity values, it was shown that permittivity variations on the scale of the expected particle size are attenuated significantly and matching is not required. For variations in permittivity on the length scale of the free-space wavelength, variations in reflected power are at most within ±10% of the mean. This is not considered operationally significant, as extreme permittivity variation over this length scale is unlikely, given the expected distribution of ore particle sizes to be treated. At typical ore transport speeds through the applicator, these variations occur on a time scale an order of magnitude shorter than the response time of typical industrial online matching equipment. This implies that online matching is neither required nor possible for short time scale variation. Long-term variations in dielectric properties can be adequately compensated for by current matching technologies. It is concluded that the transverse E-field applicator is robust to changes in the dielectric properties of crushed ores within the expected range of their variation.

Decision making can be defined as the selection process of the best routes from the alternatives in order to achieve a goal, and mostly involves uncertainty. Additionally, mostly qualitative variables (weak rock, massive ore deposit, etc.) are in question. Mine planning engineers often use their intuition and experience indecision making. As fuzzy set theory has been used since 1970, these uncertainties are easily evaluated in the decision-making process. Real world study is decision making under vague constraints of different importance, involving uncertain data (qualitative variables), where compromises between antagonistic criteria are allowed. This paper presents a new approach in the selection of an underground mining method based on fuzzy set theory for the Ciftalan Lignite Site located close to Istanbul in Turkey. The physical parameters such as geology and the geotechnical properties of ore, hanging and foot wall, economic effects, environmental effects, are established with field and laboratory tests together with the determination of other qualitative variables. Meanwhile, some qualitative variables dealing with the matter was described according to the view of a number of experts. Then fuzzy set theory is applied to these parameters, considering the available underground methods in order to choose the proper method. At the end of the evaluations, the room and pillar method with filling was determined as the most suitable method for the test site. The postulation that primary platinum group metal (PGM) matte will chemically react with magnesia-chrome bricks when temperatures exceed 1500°C was tested. Magnesia-chrome brick samples were heated in contact with matte at 1300°C to 1750°C for 30 minutes, after which the refractory samples were analysed using reflected light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The samples were all completely penetrated by matte. As the temperature increased the matte also penetrated the fused aggregate grains and disintegrated them. The chromium concentration of the matte inside the refractory samples was found to be slightly higher than that of the bulk matte. At temperatures of 1500°C and higher, MgO, FeO, and magnesium-rich silicate crystals could be identified in the matte directly adjacent to the refractorymatte interface. Phase relations clearly indicated that chemical reactions take place between primary PGM matte and the magnesiachrome refractory material at temperatures above 1500°C, but that these reactions are more complex than expected from FactSAGE® calculations.

Until 2000, pricing involved profit taking and cost covering combined with limited global published information. Market information was mostly subjective in nature and large resource companies benefited exclusively from aggregated company information and data. The market constituted producers and consumers only. The nineties saw massive cost cutting drives and re-engineering initiatives and this underwrote the structural changes evident in the late 1990s? economy. This supported South African producers on the international FOB cash cost curve, and ensured profitable coal mining operations. As the debate on relative scarcity of fossil fuels ensued, producers and buyers looked to the developing terminal coal market for direction. The much needed direction was provided when the API coal indices were developed and derivative trading was embraced to include financial institutions, trading houses and hedge funds. The liquidity of coal trades increased rapidly and vastly and market information became obtainable on a daily basis. Interpretation of current and future coal prices became available to all market players and contributed to the sophistication of the market that is now able to participate in risk management of prices, capital expenditure and brownfield developments.

The dewatering of coal, and particularly fine coal, continues to challenge coal prepatration engineers to find a cost-effective solution. With known world oil reserves being depleted daily, it is envisaged that the future price of coal may justify the use of thermal drying to achieve lower coal product moisture levels. The effect of exposure of the coal to elevated toemperatures on the mechanical strength of the coal was investigated. It was found that temperature does not play a major role in determining the volume breakage of a particle and that other variables such as orientation during impact has a much greater influence. A double breakage mechanism was reported during the grindability tests. Surface, as well as volume breakage, occurs for the first 4 minutes while only surface breakage takes place thereafter. Due to this double breakage action, it was found that exposure to temperature does play a role in the amount of breakage and breakage rates during grindability tests. It was also concluded that a particle will break to an optimum size due to impact, after which only its surface will grind away as it is subjected to breakage forces.
