Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. Microflotation tests were conducted with a modified Hallimond tube equipped with a fritted glass disk and magnetic stirrer to determine whether the results would support an equation that predicts a linear relationship between particle size and the reciprocal of particle density in water for a specified flotation recovery in a given time. Data obtained with the tube for either hydrophilic or hydrophobic solids fit the equation satisfactorily. It was also shown that the natural flotability of molybdenite is somewhat less than that of elemental sulphur and that sodium dithionite is a good depressant for sulphurised pyrite. In addition, it was found that the untreated pyrite and galena used in the study were hydrophilic and did not float by particle-bubble attachment.

25th Julius Wernher memorial lecture given at Tunnelling '91, sixth international tunnelling symposium held in London, 14-18 April 1991. The title gives the lecturer a chance to share some of the lessons he has learnt in a lifetime of tunnelling and particularly in the last six years of his involvement with the Channel Tunnel and the International Tunnelling Association. These included: the difficulties of split contracts but the problems arising with Eurotunnel over the need to create a single owner to whom the banks could lend; the peripatetic nature of tunnellers who built London's underground in the 1960s and returned to build the Channel Tunnel from Egypt, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia; the increasing requirement for strategic planning resulting in tunnels between European countries and the need for engineers to deal with decision-makers; EU work on harmonising regulations so that there need no longer be, for example, arguments over which regulations should be followed for temporary electrical equipment in the section of the UK tunnel that is technically in France; the huge improvements in safety standards and attitudes; the enormous increase in the scale of undertakings and individual contracts, with an accompanying change in attitudes to logistics; technological advances to cater for the high performance now required of equipment; and the rising importance of environmental issues. The lecturer also briefly touches on the work of the International Tunnelling Association

The mineralogical composition of the ore was determined and the mineral phases with which nickel is associated were identified. The ore was prepared by grinding to -420 micrometres and classification into granulometric fractions. Prior to the main series of experiments the effect of agitation rate on nickel recovery was investigated. The influence of sulphuric acid concentration, temperature and particle size on the kinetics of nickel extraction was then studied, both quantitatively and qualitatively, over fixed value intervals. Application of the initial rate method enabled determination both of the order of reaction with respect to sulphuric acid concentration and the activation energy for the dissolution of nickel. The results indicate that a physical mechanism can be ruled out as the rate-determining step in the extraction of nickel from the ore and that a chemical mechanism is more likely

"The natural difficulties associated with the size evaluation of dusts render absolute measurement difficult, or indeed, impossible. Assuming that the desirability of gravi­ metric sampling be conceded, it appears likely tha,t the most suitable means available for physical evaluation are the method of total turbidity measurement, to give a con­ ventional value for specific surface, together with microscopical examination, the great merit of the latter being that in the hands of an experienced operator, semi-quantitative discrimination between coal and other particles is possible.The pipette method, as modified by Fryer, probably-deserves more attention than it has received up to the present. Whatever method is used, it is recommended that in view of the lack of medical knowledge, as much information as possible should be obtained with reference to the total mass concentration, the surface area of the total dust,' and the mass and area of the particles below 5μ in size."

The second part of the paper, presented at the Midland Institute of Mining, Civil and Mechanical Engineers' general meeting held in Doncaster on 27th May 1916, addresses the post-Carboniferous and pre-Permian movements which brought about the partition of the area and gave to the North Midland district its individuality as a separate coalfield. As earth-movements of several ages subsequent to the Carboniferous have played a part in the formation of this particular coalfield, the aim is to elucidate the effects which belong to the post-Carboniferous and pre-Permian Period and to disentangle them from those of later date. This is done by comparing the geometry of the folded surface of one of the more important horizons in the Coal-Measures with that of the surface of unconformity which divides the Permian from the Carboniferous rocks in South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and Nottinghamshire

The errors resulting from field sampling, sample preparation and analysis are investigated for drainage sediments derived from homogeneous sandstone, shale, limestone, basic igneous and granite lithologies as a background to a primary reconnaissance survey of England and Wales. Emission spectrographic analyses of approximately 350 samples for Al, Ca, Fe, K, Si, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sc, Sn, Sr and V and atomic absorption analyses for Cu, Ni, Mn, Co, Zn and Pb have been treated statistically. For routine broad-scale surveys analysis of the unground -80-mesh sediment fraction proves satisfactory. Sampling error between localities in a stream is shown to be less than spectrographic analytical error for many of the elements considered here, except where mineralisation (contamination) occurs, but exceeds the atomic absorption analytical errors in most cases. Unless it it critical to reduce the amount of between-site variability (having regard to analytical errors) in the regional survey, there appears to be no advantage in the use of a more sophisticated sampling technique. The utility of moving-average maps in reducing the width of the confidence belt around the regional 'geochemical surface', and thus compensating to some extent for the sampling errors, is also demonstrated.

The previous papers have been concerned only with the atmospheric oxidation of coals from the Barnsley Seam, for which it has been shown that an adequate explanation of the origin and nature of gob-fires can be based on the reaction between the coal itself and the oxygen of the air without the intervention of any other substance. It becomes of importance, therefore, to ascertain how far a similar explanation will hold good for spontaneous heating in other seams, and with this object in view samples including anthracite and lignite have been taken from a considerable number of pits in different parts of the UK (south Wales, Northumberland and Durham, north Staffordshire, Portrush and Ayrshire), some liable to fire, others not. There is abundant evidence to support the commonly-accepted view that spontaneous heating is due to the heat evolved during the absorption of oxygen from the air by coal or pyrites. The quantity of heat produced by the reaction has been measured and it has been shown that the observed rate of heating of a sample of coal agrees with the rate calculated from the heat of reaction and the rate of absorption of oxygen

Residual subsidence is generally accepted as being about 5% of the total subsidence occurring within 12 months of all mining finishing. This paper looks at five case studies from different parts of the country, in various mining settings within a depth range of 430m to 760m. From a single seam single panel working to working the eleventh seam, all are within the concealed coalfield, similar to today's mining. The monitoring of subsidence continued for many years once the mining had finished and the results obtained are at considerable variance from the accepted norm. Subsidence has been found to carry on for up to eleven years after mining has ended, within a range of 8% to 45% of total subsidence. A highly significant factor was that subsidence, as a whole, was generally much more than predicted. The residual subsidence aspect has to he viewed in this context and in order to debate the subject at length, the causes of residual subsidence have to be balanced against the apparent inability to accurately predict subsidence. The results from the case studies were similar, even though the mining settings differed considerably. Subsidence of around 10% to 20% continued for several years after mining had ceased.

The paper, presented at the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers' general meeting held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 8th April 1916, presents experimental work undertaken to observe the quenching effect of different substances, to find the most efficient of these substances, and to arrive at a possible explanation of their preventive action. The coal-dusts experimented with were such as passed through a 100-mesh sieve (10,000 holes to the square inch), and were obtained by grinding the coals. The quenching substances, used in as fine a state of division as possible, included gypsum, dried Chance mud, quicklime, magnesia, magnesia alba (levis), anhydrous sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, soda-crystals, Glauber salts, ground shale and boiler-ashes

Spessartine-quartz rocks are manganiferous sedimentary rocks rich in spessartine and quartz which occur in north-central New Brunswick. They represent a recrystallised manganiferous siltstone/chert that is contained in or associated with red manganiferous siltstone (RMS) units. The spessartine-quartz rocks and RMS form part of an Ordovician volcanic and sedimentary succession within the Appalachian-Caledonian orogen which hosts numerous massive sulphides and polymetallic vein deposits. The New Brunswick spessartine-quartz rocks are spatially and temporally associated with stratiform base-metal, precious metal and hydrothermal tin-tungsten deposits. This suggests that spessartine-bearing lithologies and zones can be useful in predictive metallogeny and for the understanding of the stratigraphy and palaeographic setting of the early Palaeozoic rocks of the Appalachian-Caledonian orogen.

Wheal Jane, situated between Truro and the Carnmenellis granite, is under development by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., as a tin producer. The main or B lode comprises a complex cassiterite-sulphide ore located in shear zones along the footwall of the lowest of a series of porphyry dykes (elvans) which strike ENE and dip 35° north. Minor mineralisation follows other elvan contacts and sets of later steeply dipping fractures. The localisation and overall geometry of the deposit is explained in terms of the complex structural geology of the Lower Palaeozoic metasediments and the shape and manner of emplacement of the invading Hercynian granite of Cornwall. Variations in the thickness and grade of the orebody, and in the nature of the mineralisation, are shown to be structurally controlled by undulations of the footwall contact of the B elvan. This paper has formulated the methods, both medical and engineering, for the control of pneumokoniosis in the haematite-mining industry in West Cumberland, but this is only part of a general service to improve the lot of the worker in these mines, to make him a better and happier workman, and to permit him to enjoy his work and leisure in comfort and good health. This organization has now been functioning for more than ten years and the results are indeed heartening, but it is only as a result of constant vigilance from the mining and medical point of view that such a plan can operate efficiently. The human element and its full understanding is by no means the least of the problems.

For conventional aerospace aluminium alloys of the 2000 (copper) and 7000 (zinc, magnesium) series the recycling of process scrap from both metal suppliers and aircraft manufacturers is a well-established, worldwide industry. The recent introduction of a new family of alloys that incorporates lithium has posed a new challenge to the recycling industry owing to the high cost of lithium, its high reactivity to the atmosphere and to refractories and its absence from the specifications of all other registered alloys. Various process options for recycling have been identified, but vacuum distillation has been selected as the most cost-effective and technically feasible solution. Experimental work established that the separation of Li from AI-Li scrap is feasible and an industrial process has been designed. The economics of Li recovery are very sensitive to the AI-Li content of the feed material. Owing to the design of aerospace vehicle manufacturing plants it is expected that the swarf will be mixed with other alloys. A method of enriching this feed has been developed that is based on the control of swarf morphology by thermal and mechanical treatments as a precursor to eddy-current separation. After eddy-current separation and vacuum distillation small proportions of Li are retained in the AI residue. The effects of this on the properties of conventional AI-Si shape-casting alloys were investigated and safe threshold levels have been established.

The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. Three quarters of recent increases in world oil reserve estimates since 1990 have been attributed lo ‘better reservoir management' rather than to new discoveries. For the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (IJKCS), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has on 2.2 bn barrels of extra oil protection through effective reservoir management of existing producing reservoirs. Past practise has been to manage petroleum exploitation on a departmental basis, with exploration assessing and ranking prospects, reservoir engineering assessing development plans and production facilities implementing plans. Any reservations necessary might involve restarting the project evaluation from scratch. Current practice is to manage an operation through asset management teams involving all disciplines. It is hoped that this approach will not only eliminate fruitless directions of effort, but the quality of work in each discipline will benefit from interaction. That is, the result of a team effort is greater than the sum of individual efforts. To date, this is most apparent with the interaction between geology, reservoir geophysics and reservoir engineering through reservoir characterization. This is the current area of greatest effort, with improved geophysical technology and computer power leading to more and more detailed and complex simulation models. The equally important interaction of reservoir engineering and production and facilities engineering applied to fields in decline has not yet achieved the prominence that it deserves. Establishing priorities in reservoir management requires the very critical evaluation of the relative value of objectives. The fact that something can be done (3-D seismic, 4-D seismic, multilateral wells, or three phase multi-layer well test analyses etc) is not a good reason for doing it. Reservoir management should he a study of value added versus cost for any activity possible or proposed. Both in the areas of reservoir data acquisition and of assessing opportunities in the period of production decline, it is likely that expert systems will need to be developed with the associated base of experience, understanding and know ledge. A n other area for the future is the elusive target of ‘enhanced ’ oil recovery, as distinct from ‘improved’ oil recovery. The most likely route forward here is the incessant scrutiny of reservoir regions and units within fields for their suitability for pilot schemes for advanced recovery techniques implemented at a favourable time. Finally, the reduction of costs, the maintenance of low. but viable rates of production and the threat of abandonment costs will increase reserves. An increase which may have appeared insignificant in the past is now more valuable.

A new range of wear-resistant materials is being produced by technology that has been used to develop high performance metal-matrix composites. These include steels and aluminium alloys that can be made as sheet, plate, rod or bar. The incorporation of hard, wear-resistant particles in an alloy matrix is achieved by reactive casting, spray deposition and powder metallurgical techniques. For example, large particles of TiC can be homogeneously distributed in steel during casting and the subsequent product can easily be rolled to plate. Similarly, up to 20% alumina particles and SiC can be injected, respectively, into steel and wear-resistant aluminium alloys by spray deposition. The current state of development of the process is reviewed and indications are given of the projected applications of such materials.
