A complex polymetallic sulfide ore in Yunnan, China, has various valuable minerals, which are Chalcopyrite, Galena, Pyrite, Gold, Silver, and Magnetite. A reasonable new flowsheet with a bulk flotation and a flotation separation of sulfide minerals that are Chalcopyrite, Galena, and Pyrite was carried out at first stage. After that tailings were treated by low intensity magnetic separation to achieve magnetite concentrate. A high Pb concentrate assaying 60.00 percent Pb at total recovery of 75.71 percent with 40.50 g/t Au and 1390.00 g/t Ag, a final high Cu concentrate assaying 24.45 percent Cu at high recovery of 92.03 percent and a magnetite concentrate assaying 60.78 percent Fe at recovery of 33.61 percent with 18.45g/t Au and 234.99 g/t Ag, are obtained. The total recovery of Gold and Silver in Pb concentrate and Cu concentrate reached 71.63 percent and 67.32 percent, respectively. It is shown, that this new flowsheet could realize efficient recovery for all of the valuable minerals in the ore and is easy to be industrialized. Indian National Steel Policy envisages ambitious three fold rise in steel production by the year 2020. This paper covers the iron ore industry in India which cater to the need of iron ore requirement of Indian iron and steel sector as well as export commitment in addition to addressing the industry?s key concern to attain the same. The main contents are (i) resources and its exploitation; covering status of exploration, reserves and resources, province wise occurrences, distribution, nature of mineralization and generation of fines, etc ; (ii) use of iron ore in iron and steel making, covering physical and chemical requirements for pig iron and sponge iron production; (iii) ore characteristics and beneficiation practice in vogue; (iv) projected steel demand and requirement of quality iron ore and provision thereof; (v) recovery of iron values from in situ low-grade ores and stacked fine rejects (-10/-6 mm) inclusive of slimes (-0.15 mm) from tailing ponds; (vi) agglomeration of fine concentrates preferably by pelletization; (vii) measures to augment iron ore availability for future requirements.

The structure-activity relationships for four thionocarbamate collectors are discussed in this pa-per. These collector classes are alkyl alkyl thionocarbamates, allyl alkyl thionocarbamates, acyl al-kyl thionocarbamates and alkoxylcarbonyl alkyl thionocarbamates. The main emphasis will be to highlight the differences between collectors and their affinities for copper and iron sulfide minerals on the basis of data on electronic-structure properties obtained by vacuum and solution density functional calculations, flotation experiments and analysis measurements. The mechanism of interaction of these collectors with sulfide minerals is also discussed with perturbation theory. The theoretical study results indicate that acyl alkyl thionocarbamates and alkoxylcarbonyl alkyl thionocarbamates have best performance in these agents as flotation collectors with improved collecting power for copper sulfide minerals and excellent selectivity against iron sulfide minerals, which are consistent with the experimental data reported in the literature.

Turkey?s EU affairs started in 1963 with the Ankara Treaty. On 31 December 1995 the Customs Union between Turkey and the European Union came into effect. In order to achieve the Copenhagen Criteria?s, Turkey, made laws parallel to the Framework Programs. On 3 October 2005, with the confirmation of ?Membership Framework Document? the negotiation process of Turkey has started. Coal had important role in the industrialization of EU and it is directly related to Energy and Environmental subjects. In this point many restriction became with the some protocols, in last decades. European Union composed Energy and Coal Policy, therefore engaged to reduce the emissions, and made new regulations. This regulations concern Turkey?s energy future, since large; but low quality of lignite reserves of Turkey, it is expected to have some difficulties with Union?s Environmental Legislation during Turkey?s congruity process. With the last natural gas import agreements of Turkey, the production and consumption of coal sunk in last seven years. However, considering environmental sustainability, the role of coal in energy production will rise up in the coming future. In this paper, in terms of Turkey Energy Sector, production and consumption problems of coal discussed and evaluated considering EU?s coal, energy and environmental rudiments.

Waste streams, such as acid mine drainage, are often characterised by low pH values and high concentrations of heavy metals, dissolved solids, calcium and sulphates. Although lime remediation effectively removes most of the heavy metals as hydroxides, it is less effective at lowering levels of sulphates. Various methods of removing sulphates from effluents exist, such as precipitation with lime, precipitation with barium salts, co-precipitation with calcium carbonate, reverse osmosis, and ion exchange. Mintek developed a chemical precipitation (SAVMIN) process to treat acid mine drainage, which entails the addition of lime to precipitate the metal hydroxides, and the subsequent formation (precipitation) of calcium sulphoaluminate or ettringite. The key to the viability of the new technology lies in the correct use, regeneration and recycling of Al(OH)3 used to precipitate the ettringite. The water produced by this process is suitable for disposal to watercourses or for agricultural, domestic or industrial consumption. No brines are produced as the salts are converted to solid hydroxides, gypsum and calcium carbonate. The technology has been tested on several different waters in pilot plant campaigns. Results obtained indicate that potable water can be produced (containing less than 200 mg/L sulphate and no heavy metals) as long as the monavalent ions (Na+, Cl-, etc.) are within limits.

New technology for on-line particle size analysis of mineral slurries has opened up new applications for particle size measurement. In some cases the particle size distribution of the final concentrate is an important quality issue. This paper discusses established on-line particle size analysis technologies and presents experiences on the use of a new technique employing laser diffraction in several minerals processing operations. The main innovations in the new instrument are a simple dilution system and multiple scattering correction algorithm, which allows wide solids content variations of diluted sample in the measurement cell. Representative sample for laser measurement is produced by a simple and reliable dilution system. The applications discussed are; Blaine number measurement of Fe concentrate before pelletizing, grinding of variable batches of ore and paste thickener control.

The physico-chemical interaction between minerals such as olivine, chromite and serpentine and the ions most commonly present in solution, like Ca and Mg and flotation reagents such as EDTA and oleic acid was investigated. The study was conducted via release tests, electrophoretic measurements and microflotation of selected minerals coming from the Kukes deposit (Albania). The results were confirmed by means of beneficiation tests on various types of ores, from the Kukes (Kalimash), from Bulquiza area and from the Rizo deposit (Greece). It has been demonstrated that when Na-K Oleate is used as collector chromite, olivine and serpentine can be separated at pH = 2.5 and/or 5.5 employing EDTA (EthyleneDiamineTetraAcetate) on previously deslimed material. This approach ensures flotation concentrates with a Cr2O3 content about 50%, at a recovery in excess of 65%.

"The moisture in sintering is a very important parameter for the performance of the process. It allows that the granulation takes pace in an efficient way making the water bridges between the bigger particles used as nucleus and the finer particles that perform the coating of those coarse particles. The formation of the micro pellets is extremely important to prevent loss in permeability of the bed in the sintering grate, avoiding excessive fuel consumption and producing a quality sinter. The aim of this project is to use some of the methodologies for determine the saturation degree on ores and coal to determine the optimal moisture for sintering. In the sinter pot grate series, 3 to 4 assays in a series of 10 are required to determine the optimal moisture for the process. The saturation degree curve test has shown that is really viable to use this technique to skip those tests and go directly to the series to determine productivity and the coke / anthracite consumption. In an industrial scale can be used to adjust the water addition in the conventional mixing methods used in the sintering plants to increase productivity in the process.INTRODUCTION Sintering Sintering is a high temperature agglomeration process in which iron ore fines are partially melted and bonded together using fluxes and a source of fuel, usually coke breeze. The agglomerated product, sinter, has improved metallurgical properties making it an ideal ferrous burden that enable the passage of hot gases in the iron-making blast furnace. The sintering process is normally carried out over three basic stages: granulation, ignition/sintering, and product sizing. In the granulation stage, iron ore fines (usually a blend of selected ores), sinter return fines, fluxes and fuel, and are mixed with water and micro-pelletised in a drum or disc before being introduced in the main granulation circuit. Conventional spirals are capable of providing excellent clean coal recovery, although at a relatively high ash content. Compound spirals, which provide two stages of spiral cleaning in a single taller unit, have been commercialized in recent years to improve upon the cleaning performance obtained from conventional spirals. The present study aimed at optimizing the performance obtained from a compound spiral for cleaning especially high sulfur fine and ultrafine coal. Industrial-scale spiral units were utilized for this study in a pilot-scale facility at the Illinois Coal Development Park. A statistically designed experimental program was conducted to optimize ash and sulfur cleaning performance of the compound spiral. It was found that significant cleaning of ultrafine coal (i.e., 150 microns × 45 microns and even 45 microns × 25 microns size coal) is achievable with the compound spiral. However, operating conditions for cleaning finer coal fractions (-150 microns size coal) have to be significantly different from those used to clean coarser coal fractions (+150 microns size coal). The sulfur rejection trends were different from ash separation efficiency trends in all size fractions except 45 microns × 25 microns. The probable error (Ep) and effective specific gravity of separation (SG50c) determined for the compound spiral cleaning of the overall particle size were as low as 0.07 and 1.62, respectively. However, the bypass of a small percentage of clean coal to the tailings stream of the compound spiral, may need further adjustment of the key process parameters.

A fast, reliable, and low cost characterization of ore minerals products, as they result from different processing actions, represents one of the most challenging targets in the mineral processing sector. Today different techniques are available according to different sampling strategies and analytical principles. In this paper, the possibilities offered by the adoption of hyperspectral imaging based sensing units working both at micro- and macro-scale are presented and discussed. According to the different phases and stages of ore minerals and products characterization, and starting from the analyses of the detected hyperspectral firms, it is thus possible to derive useful information about mineral flow stream properties and their physical-chemical attributes. This last aspect can be utilized to define innovative process mineralogy strategies and to implement on-line procedures at processing level. The present study discusses the effects related to the adoption of different hardware configurations, the utilization of different logics to perform the analysis and the selection of different algorithms according to the different characterization, inspection, and quality control actions to apply. India is endowed with a reasonably large reserve of chrome ore, amounting to about 100 million tons in different grades and is one of the leading producers of ore/concentrate along with South Africa, Kazakhstan and others. Chromite production in India has registered a 10 times increase during the last 30 years. Till late 1940s, the practice was to mine the high-grade ore for making ferrochrome and charge chrome and export the same leaving the low and medium grade ores stacked around the mine as waste material. This practice was continued for quite some time till the increase in world wide de-mand of chromite initiated an increase in production of chromite ore in India and the aspects of ?economy of operation? and ?conservation of mineral? dawned on the producers and associated authorities. Recovery of chrome values from low and medium grade ore was initiated to produce high-grade saleable concentrate. Suitable legislation was made by Government of India to induce and provide incentives to the operators to do so. First large scale chromite beneficiation plant in India was commissioned about three decades back at Byrapore in the Southern state of Karnataka. The ore, rather simple in nature and relatively free from clay, was obtained from underground. The processing consequently was simple washing and wet tabling. Further more, some test work, on the samples from eastern coast particularly from Orissa, was carried out at an internationally reputed laboratory by a large private operator and the plant was set up. This consisted of a combination of crushing-grinding-de-sliming-classification followed by concentration in multi stage spiral concentrators and shaking table. The plant was commissioned and operated successfully. Soon a state owned company followed suit on the basis of test work carried out in a well equipped Indian laboratory. The plant worked satisfactorily after some initial teething trouble and the company plans to double the existing plant capacity by installing balancing facilities. This development prompted a number of operators, including industry leaders to join the fray and the chrome ore processing industry flourished in India. More and more operators are now in the process of adding capacities to their existing plants. This paper attempts to chart the evolution of chrome ore beneficiation industry in India through a case study with reference to an existing plant. The process technology adopted and modified to suit the altered requirements as well as the future trends are outlined.

"This paper shows that smooth and accurate feed-hopper level control is essential for consistent cone crusher operation. The objective of the paper is to define the best practices for tight control of cone crusher feed-hopper level. The paper discusses the challenges involved in a delay-dominant level control problem (specifically, dead-time-induced performance and stability issues, mass flow disturbances, process and actuator non-linearity) and proposes five corresponding control structures. The performance of the proposed control structure candidates is evaluated in a simulation study and, finally, a full-scale experiment is conducted for the best-performing candidate. The results of this study emphasize the importance of control structure selection. While the most obvious control structures failed to deliver the desired performance, the best result was achieved by using control structures that eliminate the conveyor transport delay (dead-time) from the control loop. In practice, the control loop dead-time can be eliminated by either using an actuator (variable-speed feed conveyor) that is connected directly to the feed-hopper, or by redefining the process boundaries closer to the used actuator (regulate the circuit mass balance instead of feed-hopper level). The presented control structures provide means to achieve a consistent cone crusher performance and size reduction. This facilitates efforts to improve the plant’s performance and increases the plant’s overall stability."

"The aim of the project was to develop a methodology applicable to different South African coal types to be able to predict with a high degree of certainty what kind of reagent will be suitable for flotation of a certain coal type.The study included 5 coal samples from different collieries and included Highveld seam 3 and 4 coal (as one sample), Waterberg coal (zone 10 -11), Highveld seam 5 upper coal and Witbank seam 2 and seam 4 coal. Seam 3 and 4 (mixture) coal, Waterberg and the seam 5 upper coal were all found to be vitrinite rich coals. The coal characterisation study included petrographic analysis, proximate analysis, float-sink analysis, oxygen-containing functional groups, surface extraction, flotation release analysis and contact angle measurements.The flotation tests showed that the best reagents to float all of the coal samples studied are iso-decanol and dodecene. These reagents produced flotation products that are near to the release curve. Statistical relationship for predicting ash content and yield that can be expected for a certain coal type and selected collector was obtained. From the relationship, the accuracy of the yield is above 95% (p-value below 0.05) with a linear regression of 0.9289. The accuracy of the ash is slightly lower with a linear regression of 0.7841 but also above 95%."

Biosorption of heavy metals can be an effective process for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study, the adsorption properties of nonliving (boiling in NaOH) biomass of phanerochaete chrysosporium. For Pb (II) and Zn (II) were investigated by using batch adsorption techniques. The effects of initial metal ion concentration, initial pH, biosorbent concentration, stirring speed, effect of temperature and contact time on biosorption efficiency were studied. Experimental results indicated that the uptake capacity and adsorption yield of one metal ion were reduced by the presence of the other metal ion. In the experiments the optimum pH value was found out 6.0. The experimental adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir and Frundlich adsorption models. The highest metals uptake was calculated for Zn (II) and Pb (II) were 57 and 87 respectively. desorption of heavy metal ions was performed by 50 mM HNO3 solution. The results indicated that the biomass of p.chrysosporium is a suitable biosorbent for removing heavy metals ion from aqueous solution.

The addition of copper sulfate to mineral slurries in order to ?activate? sulfide mineral surfaces for enhanced collector molecule adsorption, and hence enhanced recovery via flotation, is a com-mon mineral processing practice. It has been established in a laboratory situation that the addition of CuSO4 in conjunction with xanthate collector increases the flotation rate of pentlandite as compared to the addition of collector alone. However, it remains unclear whether the addition of CuSO4has a similar effect within mineral processing circuits. We examine here the effect of pre-activation oxidation on the copper activation of pentlandite and monoclinic and hexagonal pyrrhotite. All activation experiments were carried out at pH 9 using a total solution content of copper ions equivalent to one monolayer (0.210 -4 moles, 110-4M). Copper loss from solution was extremely rapid in all cases with less than 10 % remaining after 10s. EDTA extraction and solution analysis clearly demonstrated that copper activation was via direct surface adsorption and not an ion exchange process, as is the case for sphalerite, and that most copper on the surfaces is in the form of Cu(I). ToF-SIMS analyses of the mineral surfaces subsequent to copper activation show increased surface oxidation on increased conditioning time prior to copper activation. However, there is a significant decrease in surface oxidation on comparison of samples that have otherwise been prepared in the same manner but where one has been exposed to copper solution rather than water. This suggests that copper activation stabilises the surface and reduces the propensity for oxidation. Regardless of the length of pre-activation oxidation time only Fe(III) (no Fe(II)-S) was observed by XPS analysis, indicating a highly oxidised surface layer dominated by Fe-O-OH species. The presence of Cu(II) on the mineral surface is indicative of the formation of Cu(II)-containing precipitates and indicates non-mineral specific activation resulting in increased recovery but lower grade. Mineral specific copper adsorption, as evidenced by the presence of Cu(I), is required to improve both grade and recovery. Prolonged oxidation prior to copper activation causes a reduction in the Cu(I) to Cu(II) ratio on the mineral surfaces as compared to either fresh surfaces or surfaces oxidised for 1 minute only. This strongly indicates that the copper activation process is less effective on highly oxidised surfaces.

A preliminary attempt has been made to study the particle size distribution (PSD) of minerals in one of the industrially important pulverized Indian coal sample using computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM). The results show that clay minerals, quartz, pyrite, and pyrrhotite form the bulk of the mineral matter. Minor minerals, such as calcite, dolomite, ankerite, barite, oxidized pyrrhotite, and gypsum are also observed in the coal sample. The PSD of the included minerals is generally observed to be finer than that of the excluded ones in the coal. Thus, the coal rich in included minerals has more small mineral particles, which may affect its reactivity. The proportion of included to excluded is found to be higher in major cases. Si is found to be mostly occurred as quartz and clay minerals, while Al mostly occurs as silicate minerals. Fe is primarily present as iron sulfides, iron oxide, and Fe-Al-silicate. S is partitioned into iron sulfides and gypsum. Most Ca occurs as carbonates and gypsum, with a minor fraction associated with clay minerals. Mg is found to be mainly present as dolomite and clay minerals, with a very minor fraction present as ankerite. The majority of alkali elements are associated with aluminosilicates. P is mostly associated with kaolinite and/or present as more complex compounds containing Al, Si, and other elements as apatite are found to be absent in the coal studied. "Self-similarity is proofed to be a common feature when brittle material is comminuted, either in particle bed or single particle mode. Appropriate test work is well documented for particle sizes less than 7 mm in several publications. In contrast, almost no research has been done for coarser particles. The aim of this paper is to show that the fracture pattern of coarser material also tends to be self-similar. Hence, single particles of quartzite, granodiorite and dolomite were comminuted under compressive load. The focus was set on three different size fractions -3.15 +2.5 mm, -31.5 +25 mm and lumps -300 mm. According to the wide range of particle sizes, three different piston-die presses were used with a maximum compressive force ranging from 5 kN to 4000 kN. The force-displacement curves were recorded in order to calculate the specific comminution energy. Additionally, the -31.5 +25 mm size fraction was crushed in a laboratory scale jaw crusher and a roll crusher. Some authors report that the energy-size-reduction relationship of self-similar materials can be approximated by a linear function, which is independent of the comminution equipment. In their charts the slope can be seen as a product-size-independent grindability measure. Our tests show a self-similar breakage behavior when particles in a range of -300 +3 mm are comminuted in single particle mode. Furthermore, the products of the piston-die-presses and the roll crusher are similar to each other in a self-similar representation of the particle size distribution. The jaw crusher product, however, is not self-similar compared to the piston-die-press products. Finally, the linear energy-size-reduction relationships are confirmed for each fraction, but show size dependent slopes."

The basic objectives of current EU waste policy are to prevent waste and promote re-use, recycling and recovery to reduce negative environmental impact (2008/98/EC). In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for sustainable development by decreasing amount of waste and increasing material efficiency. Main target is to understand what are the most efficient drivers for environmental friendly decision making for reasonable consumption and use of raw materials. Environmental control instruments usually mean those actions the regulatory authority uses to control and limit environmentally harmful behavior of companies. A major change in the environmental control system took place in the 1980s with the focus moving from specific environmental issues to the environment as a whole. The environmental control system i.e. the legal (administrative), economic and informative instruments focuses on prevention. Before and still, the legislation is one of the main drivers in improving material efficiency. In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for effective industrial material use, and mainly on drivers. The objective of this study is to analyze how the drivers are working and are there any possibilities to influence on those. Our aim is also to introduce few examples of the existing supply chains and the drivers for better environmental performance and material efficiency. These examples are also compared with ideal reference scenarios. Our main research question in this article is: ?Are the financial issues the most important driver for environmental friendly strategic decisions?? In addition, retell the story from another perspective: ?The most important barrier for environmental friendly innovations seem to be the investment cost, the high risk involved in committing capital to unproven technology.? Other drivers, like the corporate social responsibility, stakeholder pressure, and general public pressure, will also affect the final decision. The issues facing graduate training in the mineral processing industry are not too different today from those that prompted the initiation of the Anglo American Platinum Graduate Development Programme (AGDP) in 2002. Graduate metallurgists in South Africa enter the industry from different undergraduate programmes at various tertiary institutions, and so the knowledge and skills of the young graduates varies. Further, the geographical expansion of the industry combined with the downsizing of business units means that there are fewer opportunities for young graduates to be mentored through their first few years on site. Anglo American Platinum chose to address these issues by implementing an intensive, structured graduate training programme for all their new metallurgical graduates, known as the AGDP. The first two years of experience of the AGDP, from the viewpoints of both graduates and lecturers, were presented to the mineral processing community at the IMPC in Turkey in 2006 (Sweet et al, 2006). From the beginning, the programme was structured in a modular fashion to include a basic technical ?toolbox? including statistics, the scientific method and sampling protocols, while the mineral processing content comprised advanced learning in comminution, classification and flotation (later extended to include hydrometallurgy). Technical communication ? both written and verbal ? was included from the start. The programme was focussed very strongly on site work (?learning by doing?), with a major integrated site campaign conducted and analysed by each cohort. In 2012 the AGDP will accept its ninth cohort into the programme. This paper describes how Anglo American Platinum and the University of Cape Town have developed and adapted the programme over the last few years, in response to the challenges of the global recession, skills retention, and the changing operational needs of the company. The programme, which was drawn up to accommodate around 15 concentrator-only graduates, now accommodates 35-40 concentrator, smelter and refinery graduates annually. The programme has also been modified to facilitate new graduates spending most of their first year on the operations. The benefits of the programme for Anglo American Platinum have been tangible, and will be discussed in the paper. Keywords: graduate training, technology transfer

This paper explores the relationship between the rheological behaviour and mineralogical nature of three different natural ore types. Rheological measurements performed here on Platreef, Kimber-lite and Norseman-Wiluna ores are correlated with the variation of phylosilicate mineral content in these ores and the corresponding physical properties of selected phylosilicate mineral groups. Preliminary results show that the clay mineral group (talc) has the least effect on both Bingham yield stress and viscosity of the three ore slurries tested, whereas the serpentine mineral group has a dramatic increasing effect on the Bingham yield stress especially at very low solid volume fractions. The Bingham viscosity of the mineral slurry appears to be the most influenced by the presence of the swelling clay mineral group (smectite). Significant increases in either Bingham yield stress or viscosity due to elevated contents of these problematic phylosilicate mineral groups are likely to cause negative effects on the processing and manageability of mineral slurries but it is unclear which is likely to have a more detrimental effect.
